But in this interview with BizNews, retired US Army Military Intelligence Officer Colonel Chris Wyatt says: “I wouldn't lose any sleep over Donald Trump being steamrolled by Elon Musk…Musk may be making lot of waves right now…(but) You will see that if he is being disruptive in a way that Trump doesn't like, he'll be pushed backwards a little bit.” As for Musk apparently turning his hand to US foreign policy by meeting with a leading Iranian official, Wyatt says it “came as a bit of surprise to folks on this side of the Atlantic”. However, he does hope that Musk will nudge Trump to do something about the loss of US influence on the African continent. “if…he puts a little earworm in Trump's ear about Africa or South Africa, then we're likely to see some action in Africa”. Commenting on AGOA and the African National Congress’ (ANC’s) resistance to US meddling in its affairs, Wyatt says: “If you don't want us in your business, then don't take money from us. You're taking plenty of money from Tehran and from Beijing. Just go there and get it.” Meanwhile, he predicts that SWAPO is “next on the list” of long-ruling parties in Africa to be ousted in an election.

On this Sunday Show with BizNews, United Independent Movement (UIM) President Neil De Beer describes how Libya’s late dictatorial despot, Muammar al-Gaddafi, propped up the African National Congress (ANC) government - and predicts - now that it has been confirmed by former Treasurer-General Matthews Phosa - the current Libyan government will not get back millions still “missing” because “there's too much money that has to be paid back by too many people”. Meanwhile, he urges citizens to take advantage of a judgment that city officials can now be charged with dereliction of duty if their municipal areas are not kept up to standard. He also comments on the latest drama in the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as well as the Zama-Zama humanitarian crisis.

Paul Gardiner is a renowned South African conservationist and avid long-distance runner. He has launched a new six-part documentary series, “Natural Born Runners,” exclusively on YouTube. The series is a project that blends his two passions, running and conservation, and aims to inspire a younger generation to connect with and protect the planet. Locations include the Eastern Cape, where his family has been involved in rewilding projects, Bahrain, Scotland and the USA. When BizNews caught up with him, Gardiner was in Antarctica, bracing -20°C, after completing a 21 km race with his brother, Murray. He discussed the challenges of filming and running in Antarctica due to the harsh terrain and extreme cold, highlighting global warming and avian flu as significant environmental concerns in the region. “If all the ice in Antarctica melts, sea levels will rise by 60 metres,” he told BizNews. Paul also recounted his experience visiting a recently discovered penguin colony that shows no fear of humans. Having a sports scholarship to a U.S. university has been a transformative opportunity for many athletes worldwide, offering unique paths for personal and professional growth. However, talent alone isn’t enough, as Tyler Hollingsworth from Sable International told BizNews in an interview. While parents often discourage social media, it can be advantageous when applying for a US college athlete scholarship, as it helps attract the attention of coaches. Hollingsworth, who earned a finance degree in the US while playing football, started a company to help students follow in his footsteps and joined Sable International earlier this year. Three students from his programme have competed in the Olympics, and he has secured over a billion rand in academic and sports scholarships for students.

Donald Trump’s re-election as US President is expected to accelerate the US economy, boost confidence, and benefit the commercial real estate market. That is according to Justin Clarke, the Director of Operations at OrbVest, a company that invests in medical commercial real estate across the USA. Clarke said a good economy boosts confidence, leading to more companies signing long-term leases, unlike the post-COVID era marked by uncertainty. In an interview with BizNews, Clarke highlighted the burdensome regulations in the US real estate, which cause delays and increased costs, and expressed the hope that the new administration might streamline these regulations to enhance efficiency. The influence of Elon Musk, who has become a close confidant of Trump, could lead to a push for the US government to deregulate, he says. Commenting on some of OrbVest’s medical real estate buildings that have not performed as expected, Clarke said that COVID led to tenants walking away from office spaces, and rising interest rates have caused challenges. However, he said, “the wind is starting to blow behind us.” Added to a changing economy is an ageing US population with increasing healthcare costs, which he said ultimately means more tenants and more money flowing around in the healthcare space. And here is an interesting titbit he shared: the US government has so far been OrbVest’s worst tenant.- Linda van Tilburg

In his second interview with BizNews, the real founder of uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), Jabulani Khumalo, bluntly calls Advocate Dali Mpofu a liar for claiming that he secretly set up MKP with former President Jacob Zuma. However, he says Mpofu was part of a plot to hijack the party he had founded. He also describes how he had guns pointed at him twice after false claims that he was going to deregister MKP. He speaks of how Zuma is making “all these mistakes” because he is bitter and angry - especially at President Cyril Ramaphosa. Khumalo is outraged at the corruption accused in MKP’s top structure - and says they are not in MK to work for the people. “They are in there to fight their battles”. As for the Government of National Unity (GNU), Khumalo says: “For me, it's a joke. People of South Africa need a government that is clean…GNU is doing nothing for the people. They are only trying to safeguard their positions in the government.”

The Gauteng Provincial Government has been tapping into a vast CCTV camera network to fight the high levels of crime in the province. In this interview with BizNews, Michael Varney, the Chief Commercial Officer of Vumacam, details the size of the network which has spread throughout Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Mogale - and now even into the Western Cape where it has planted its first network in conjunction with the Saldanha Bay Municipality. He details the “multitude of successes” achieved with the public-private partnership in Gauteng where it has been able to reduce response times from 18 to 30 minutes down to five to 10 minutes. As for the technology, apart from number plate recognition cameras, there are also overview cameras that pick up suspicious behaviour as well as smoke in a city notorious for building fires. “…the minute smoke is picked up, we're able then to create an alert and dispatch appropriately, leading to enormous successes in the prevention of the loss of life.”

The new Mayor of Tshwane, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, is faced with debt of over R11 billion, while creditors owe the City over R28 billion. In this interview with BizNews, Dr Moya details her 100-day action plan to save the Metro; gives viewers the low-down on behind-the-scenes talks on a payment plan of the almost R7-billion it owes ESKOM alone. The FW de Klerk Foundation has welcomed the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, a grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors. This movement has been honoured for using the testimony of the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to advocate against the use of nuclear weapons ever again. Christo van der Rheede, the Executive Director of the Foundation, highlighted in an interview with Biznews that South Africa has a proud legacy of promoting peace, with Presidents Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk both receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for their roles in bringing peace to South Africa. Van der Rheede also noted that De Klerk took a significant step further by deciding to disarm South Africa, ensuring the country’s nuclear weapons were destroyed, making South Africa the first nation to take such action. He has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to be consistent in his message: “Stand up and say enough is enough.” Van der Rheede argued that Ramaphosa cannot hold the Israelis accountable for events in the Middle East while remaining silent about the atrocities committed by Putin or Hamas. All those entities, he said, are out to destroy instead of engaging in dialogue, as Presidents Mandela and De Klerk had done.

A member of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police has laid charges against four top members of the South African Police Force. He is Fadiel Adams, who is also the Leader of the National Coloured Congress (NCC]. The officers include Crime Intelligence Head Major General Dumisani Khumalo. In this interview with BizNews, Adams details allegations against the top officers. He also reveals what he was told in Westville Prison by a former Task Force member who has been on remand for almost five years on a charge of defeating the ends of justice after he refused to carry out a political arrest. “The South African Police Services appears to be a mafia. It appears to be the biggest gang in the country,” Adams says. Meanwhile, he is in no doubt that he will face retaliation - and may even be killed - for taking action. “Now when I took this thing up, I was asked by a very good friend of mine, are you sure you want to do this? I said, why would you ask me this? I have to do this. He said to me, Boeta, you're not going up against the gang boss. A gang boss has two, 300 soldiers. These people have a hundred thousand. He said, SARS will be in your pockets tomorrow morning. Charges will be trumped up against you. Your name will be smeared in the media. I said, they need to do what they need to do because this is our police services, not his. If people are misusing secret state funds to buy cars, to establish political task teams, to have political opponents killed, to have good policemen locked up, then the rest of us need to speak up about it.”

In South Africa, more than 8 million of our 12.5 million school pupils walk to school as their families cannot afford private transportation. The danger some of them face has been highlighted by a recent story of the pupils of a remote village of eNkovukeni in far northern KwaZulu-Natal who have to cross a lake with hippos to get to the Nhlange Secondary School in Manguzi. A non-profit organisation, The Love Trust, which runs the Nokuphila School in Tembisa, has devised a plan to provide safe and dependable transport to its pupils. They invite businesses to sponsor a seat through the Nokuphila Transport Programme. Mmatsie Motimele, a fundraiser for The Love Trust, told BizNews in an interview that a key contributor to the school's high attendance record is their commitment to providing safe and dependable transport to their pupils. Seats can be sponsored on the GivenGain website. The annual cost per child is R8,941.

The Pestalozzi Trust - a civil rights organisation dedicated to protecting homeschooling and civil education - has warned President Cyril Ramaphosa in a letter that it will launch a legal challenge to the BELA Act. In this interview with BizNews, the trust’s Christopher Cordeiro says: “…once the President says what the date of its coming into force, the trust will, I think, be one of the first, if not the first, to serve its papers.
