- 302 - "Blessed Are You: The Sunday After a Tough Election” by Kenny Bishop
Our plan was to conclude our election-time series last Sunday. However, we've heard from a lot of people who are looking for assurance and hope after this past Tuesday's elections. A lot of folks are afraid, and many feel threatened.
What do we do with our anger and anxiety?
How do we respond to our fear and our grief?
How committed are we to the good work of justice and righteousness in our world?

Mon, 11 Nov 2024 - 21min - 301 - "Malice Toward None" by Kenny Bishop
As of this message, we are hours away from casting our final votes for who will be the next president of the United States. Getting here has been hard, emotional, and disconcerting. Families and friends have staked their territory and many have chosen not to listen to the other side, outside of the targeted parts and pieces their own side wants them to hear. Our nation is fractured, maybe not as drastically as it was in the mid-1800s, but probably as divided as it's been since. It would be a good time to be reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew 22 that loving our neighbor is not an option, and Abraham Lincoln's words to a broken nation as the Civil War was coming to an end... "With Malice Toward None."

Mon, 04 Nov 2024 - 23min - 300 - “We are the Body-that’s who we are” by Pam Lee-Miller
This Sunday we continue our worship series that invites us to extend ourselves beyond the divisions we feel in this world. We will consider what it means to respect each other, irrespective of our differences. "R.E.S.P.E.C.T., find out what it means to me." Aretha Franklin convinced us that it means a lot. Sometimes we think having respect means to agree or be the same, but that is not actually the depth of what respect is about. It comes from the Latin "respectus" which means "the act of looking at one often, to consider, to observe." We are called to respect by tending to one another. We'll see you this Sunday to continue our series, "Do Unto Others."

Mon, 28 Oct 2024 - 23min - 299 - “One” by Kenny Bishop
Today, we continue our worship series that points us toward connection in a world of divisions. The root of the word “human” is the same as the word “humility.” It all means literally “on the ground.” From dust we came, and to dust we shall return. When we hear each other’s fears, anxieties, and pain, we can return to the ground of hope… that we are all experiencing the pains of being human. This week, we remember to look first at our neighbor as a person, not a position. Beginning conversations this way may help us to stay human and “on the ground” with one another rather than needing to come out “on top.” MESSAGE: “One” by Kenny Bishop

Mon, 21 Oct 2024 - 18min - 298 - “Compassion” by Kenny Bishop
Today, we continue our worship series that invites us to consider the qualities that will help us navigate the divisions we are experiencing in our world. This week, we consider compassion. Why do we need this quality more than ever now? Because we are complex beings living in a complex world. We sometimes deal with conflict within us in addition to the conflict between us. Research tells us that because we humans are desperate for a sense of cohesion and belonging in these confusing times, we are hanging onto ideological generalities instead of treating ourselves and each other with the compassion required to alleviate despair. Compassion grows when we are able to know ourselves and one another on a deeper level and act out of understanding. MESSAGE: “Compassion” by Kenny Bishop

This Sunday we begin to delve into what it means to love our neighbor during an election year. Do different political views give us the right to throw sand and kick people off the playground? We will examine what it means to have compassion for one another - even when we do not agree. We'll see you this Sunday to begin our new series, "Do Unto Others. Bartimaeus was a blind man who made his living as a beggar. He lived at the mercy of others, and that meant he lived most of his life in poverty and great need. One day though, he heard that Jesus the healer was walking by, and with nothing to lose, he called out once again for mercy. This time though, the results were different.

Was Jesus the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T)? When he asked his closest followers what was on their minds, he discovered they had selfish ambitions that could hamper their work for the kin-dom. That's when he brought a little child into the group, embraced him and used him as an example of what true welcome and humility is.

Who do you say Jesus is? It's a great question, but the answer probably depends on a lot of things. When Jesus challenged his followers with the honest question, some of them tried to use the moment to prove their bravado. Jesus shut them down with stern words, "Get behind me, Satan." We've heard it said before, laughter is good like medicine. It relaxes our minds, exercises our bodies, fills our lungs with air, energizes our hearts, lifts our spirits, and makes for happier moments. It always feels good to laugh, and these days, it seems more important than ever for us to find something that brings us that kind of joy. And another thing, laughter is contagious.

August is recognized as Overdose Awareness Month. Being a part of a community means being aware of the needs around us, and recognizing the great need for compassion toward those who are fighting the internal war on drug abuse and addiction. It also means walking with those who are addicted and supporting them as we can. It means instead of throwing stones of judgment, we can instead bring stones of compassion.

Today we are making the history that the generations who follow will write about and discuss. We have to ask ourselves what our motives are. Are we seeking a better world? If so, for whom do we seek it? If our hearts are set on being our best for others more than ourselves, then we are following the great Shepherd that we read about in Psalm 23.

Most of us have a lot of demands for our time, our attention, and our resources. Sometimes we're able to manage to survive with at least a degree of success. But eventually, we find ourselves feeling burnt out and tired. That's when we discover that even though the tasks may not have been monumental, they have been constant and nonstop. In the words of a great songwriter, "It ain't the mountains that cause me to falter... it's the little hills whose constant rhythm is unbroken that drains our strength away."

A touch can be a powerful thing. It can be violent, it can be calming, it can be healing. When we read the story of the woman who had been sick for twelve years and had been declared unclean by the religious law, we are reminded of the courage it took for her to reach through the throngs of people surrounding Jesus just for the chance to touch the hem of his robe. She risked a lot, but in the end, because of her faith, she received a lot. She was healed, not by the touch of Jesus, but by her touching him. MESSAGE: “A Touch That Heals” by Pam Lee-Miller

When Jesus and his disciples started their journey across the sea the winds were calm and the waters were smooth. To take advantage of the time away from the crowds, he even took a pillow to get some rest. Then things changed. A sudden storm started rocking their boat violently and the once-resting disciples were now afraid. But Jesus continued to sleep... until they decided to wake him. His message to the storm was to cease and his message to his followers was to find the faith to look beyond the wind.

Mon, 24 Jun 2024 - 21min - 281 - “It's Just a Title” by Kenny Bishop
Most of us think of God as a father figure. In almost all of the ancient writings and translations that we are familiar with, God is presented in the masculine. But there are scriptures that allow us to see another part of God's personality apart from that idea. At Bluegrass United Church of Christ, we try hard to be as inclusive as possible, to make everyone feel welcome, and feel valued. One way we do that is by acknowledging that God means different things to different people. This Father's Day, we want everyone to know that God is available to them - as a father, as a mother, as whatever they need.

Let's be honest; all of us, preachers and pastors included, sometimes have doubts and times when we struggle with our faith. None of us are immune from wondering if God really is there for us. Mon, 08 Apr 2024 - 46min - 270 - “Look Up" an Easter sermon by Kenny Bishop
Sometimes we have trouble reconciling the rejection we find in many churches with the radical inclusion we find in the bible's Easter story. Three days had passed. The women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body, according to custom. No doubt the journey to the tomb was heavy. Perhaps they approached with heads lowered in defeat and grief. But then they looked up and it changed their lives. The barrier that they thought would be there was gone and what they discovered instead was life. That same promise is ours - even if we've been told it is not for us - we believe God's promise of life is for everyone. MESSAGE: “Look Up" by Kenny Bishop

Make no mistake, the powers-that-be in Jerusalem sat up and took notice at the actions of Jesus and his motley crew of palm-waving followers on that morning. It was a show of the "power" of love and injustice for the "least of these," in stark juxtaposition to the military might of the Roman rulers. It was a non-violent action featuring a man sitting on a donkey - an action that has offered hope throughout the ages. Will we sit up and take notice of the injustice of this world and work to eradicate it in ways that honor that first Palm Sunday parade? We're excited to continue our Lent series, What R U Up 2? The story of Jesus' response to the temple being made into a marketplace was profound and may have been another step toward his ultimate demise on the cross. Jesus was very clear that following him might not be a smooth ride. He was bound to choose the just way, not the easy way, through life. Mon, 26 Feb 2024 - 17min - 264 - "Coming Up" by Pam Lee-Miller
The first Sunday of our new Lent series brings us to the moment at which Jesus comes up out of the water of baptism to hear, "You are my beloved." We are called to come up out of the depths of whatever seeks to keep us under and know that we are beloved of God. Come up, for now is the time to be fully who you are created to be for the sake of the world.

Many of us grew up with an apocalyptic view of the future. The fear and dread that resulted were both motivation and intimidation. But was that the message that Jesus was trying to convey? Is our relationship with God supposed to be based on fear?

Mon, 12 Feb 2024 - 16min - 262 - "Them Too" by Kenny Bishop
Most of us have never experienced a world as divided as it is today. Things that usually bring us together are pulling us apart. Issues that have historically not been political suddenly are. As a nation and as a people, we are being forced to choose sides, even when there shouldn't be any. How do we navigate the anger and divisive rhetoric without compromising our core understandings of what we believe faith and justice looks like.

Mon, 29 Jan 2024 - 18min - 260 - "I Have a Dream" by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King gave what would become one of the great speeches of the twentieth century. Even though it seems our nation has taken steps backward in recent years, we still dare to march toward Dr. King's vision of America as a place that truly believes that all are created equal, is a place where former slaves and slave owners will sit together, where oppression will become freedom and justice, where everyone is judged by the content of their character, where while and Black children will join hands as brothers and sisters, where valleys will be exalted, mountains will be made low, rough places will be made plain, and crooked places will be made straight. Join us as we hear and receive Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

For many, Christmas is over when the sun goes down on December 25th. But there is still more of the Christmas story to tell. Today we look at the experience that the magi had when they traveled from a faraway place in search of the rumored Christ child. We learn they were not looking for salvation or repentance, but only to honor the one who would bring the good news so many needed to hear.

Mon, 01 Jan 2024 - 47min - 257 - “When Love Was Born" by Pam Lee-Miller
This Advent season we have been celebrating the gift of being truly present - to each other and to the call of God to make this world a better place. We believe that we are called to claim the gift of being fully present with all people - those who mourn, those who grieve, those who have suffered indignity and oppression. In our final Advent service, which happens to also be Christmas Eve, Pam shares with us about the journey Mary and Joseph took to the place where the child was born, and the Love that started there and made its way around the world, changing and making better all of us who listed to and follow its example.

Mon, 25 Dec 2023 - 18min - 256 - “Joy" by Kenny Bishop
In our Advent series, we are celebrating the gift of being truly present - to each other and to the call of God to make this world a better place. We believe that we are called to claim the gift of being fully present with all people - those who mourn, those who grieve, those who have suffered indignity and oppression. Mary's Magnificat is prophetic as well. She claimed the overturning of injustices even before it has come to pass. In the difficulty of her situation, she "sings" with joy about the very real presence of God growing in her. This week we focus on what it means to be a gift of joy. MESSAGE: “Joy" by Kenny Bishop

In our Advent series, we are celebrating the gift of being truly present - to each other and to the call of God to make this world a better place. We can be the gift of presence with those who are experiencing life as less-than-peaceful. But this might also be true of how we are personally feeling in this moment. Our lives can feel a bit chaotic or in need of a makeover. The Good News is that God is continually making a way for do-overs. In this we can find our peace, even when life doesn't feel so peaceful. This week we focus on what it means to be a gift of non-anxious presence for those who need it most.

Mon, 04 Dec 2023 - 16min - 253 - “Thankful Gratitude” by Pam Lee-Miller
This Sunday we will explore the biblical story of ten outcasts who encounter Jesus and in turn, find their healing. In Luke 17, while Jesus is on his journey, he comes across ten lepers who are forced to live their lives on the margins of society because of their disease. When they see Jesus, they cry out for mercy. How might this ancient story invite us to embrace every experience as a possibility to become our greater self? Can we too come to appreciate our journey to becoming and be filled with a worshipful attitude? Join us this Sunday at 10 AM as we do a bit of theological wrestling. Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 36min - 251 - “A Prodigal Party” by Kenny Bishop
Many of us who grew up around fundamentalist theology are familiar with what it means to be lost. We heard people talk about being lost and undone, lost without Christ, lost as in unsaved. Jesus told three stories in a row that were all about being lost - the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost boy. All three stories end with a party, a sheep party, a coin party, and a prodigal party.

Mon, 13 Nov 2023 - 15min - 250 - “When They Fall” by Rev. Chad Abbott
There's an interesting story in the bible about a young man named Eutychus who happened to fall asleep while Paul the apostle waxed on what it means to be a follower of Jesus. The young man was sitting on a window ledge and fell three stories to his death. Even though Eutychus was considered to be on the margins, Paul stopped his talk to rush to the young man's aid. He fell on him, held him, and prayed for God's healing because that's what a person of God does when someone has fallen. Today, United Church of Christ Conference Minister Chad Abbott shares this story with us and how we can see it as an example and opportunity to mirror that extravagant love for those who have fallen around us.

Mon, 25 Sep 2023 - 22min - 243 - "What We Know" by Kenny Bishop
We've probably all said it at some point; "If I knew then what I know now..." One of the great advantages of living a while is the number of opportunities we have to learn and adjust what we believe about our faith and religion, and our understanding of who Jesus is. That means sometimes rethinking some of the ideas, maybe even some of the "truths" that we thought we knew. Changing our minds is not a bad thing when we are attempting to adapt to better ways of understanding.

It can be a bit of a challenge these days to know what is authentic and what is not. We hear cries of fake news and seeds of doubt are sown into every bit of information we hear. Mon, 14 Aug 2023 - 26min - 237 - “Extravagant Abundance” by Pam Lee-Miller
There is great disparity in our world, just as there was in the world that Jesus lived in centuries ago. There are several stories in the bible that speak to God's provision, but as believers, we count on God's ability to see us through difficult and needy times. Faith in God's radical, extravagant abundance is central to our relationship with God. But God also relies on us to do what we can for ourselves, but especially for others. That is how God's extravagant abundance is expressed - when we are available to and willing to express it. MESSAGE: “Extravagant Abundance” by Pam Lee-Miller

Mon, 31 Jul 2023 - 17min - 235 - "God Knows" by Kenny Bishop
Some of us are kinda spooked at the thought of God knowing everything about us. But it's probably because we've been warned of a god that gets some kind of strange delight out of taunting us with judgment, then punishing us for whatever kind of "sin" we've been secretly living in. But that's not the God we ever find in the bible. We can take comfort in knowing that God does in fact know us and takes great delight in loving us just the same.

Life is not and will never be problem free. We will know challenges and sometimes struggle to make sense of things. Things that should be simple can become complicated, and relationships that should be full of love can suddenly be in danger of ending. Our very special guest Pam Stevenson reminds us that even as he was about to be crucified, Jesus continued to extend the invitation to eat, to drink, and to join him in fellowship - even knowingly extending that invitation to the one who would ultimately betray him. Jesus loved all the way till the end.

Most of us white Americans have only recently become educated on the significance of June 19th. As Black communities have celebrated Juneteenth, a day that could rightly be seen as America's true Independence Day, too many of us who never learned about the final pronouncements of freedom to the enslaved people of Texas simply lived without the knowledge and the inspiration it brings. We read in the bible that there is a season for everything. That means that at one point or another, it's okay to do the thing you may not be comfortable with - as long as it does nothing to harm others or yourself. But knowing when it is right to do that thing depends on whether you are listening and learning to wait on the holy prompter. Mon, 12 Jun 2023 - 24min - 228 - "Wake Up!" by Pam Lee-Miller
There seems to be a lot of anger in our world these days. And too much of it is what the more conservative religious leaders like to call "righteous anger." But just how righteous can it be to devalue and discriminate against a population of people who are already struggling to survive in a secular culture, much less a holy one? Today, Pam talks to us about learning to do better, then doing better for the trans community and others. It's time to wake up to their needs and our part in helping them deal with them. Mon, 05 Jun 2023 - 22min - 227 - "May the Force Be With You" by Pam Lee-Miller
Today is Pentecost Sunday. The celebrations that have developed in the church over time have sometimes distracted from the original moment and God's first intention of bringing together the different cultures and voices and languages that were in that place 50 days after Jesus' resurrection. As we wrap up our spring series, "Be the Church," we remember the moment of empowerment that arrived on that first Pentecost and we remind ourselves that loving God is expressed in that power. It means something to "be the church." We can say we are the church, but actually being the church is something else altogether. It means we must do more than claim our position as followers of Christ, it means we must mimic his ways of compassion and embracing humanity. Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 28min - 220 - "Resurrection in 2023?" by Pam Lee-Miller
Sometimes it seems like Sunday will never get here - Easter Sunday that is. Jesus' followers really didn't understand or expect even that the Sunday following his execution would be so eventful. From their perspective, there wasn't really a Sunday surprise to look forward to. For us, we look back at that time and those days between Jesus' death and resurrection with anticipation of new life, new opportunities, and new hope. And that's what we need in 2023 - we need hope - resurrection hope.

Mon, 10 Apr 2023 - 24min - 219 - "Palms of Change" by Kenny Bishop
We tend to think of Jesus' entry and ride into Jerusalem on a donkey as the beginning of the end for his earthy work and ministry. The events of that day will lead to his last meal with his followers, his betrayal, his execution, his burial, and his resurrection. But it seems we've forgotten the reason the people were most excited to see this peasant leader. It was because he was supposed to bring change. They believed he was coming to change the way the government and those in power were ruling over them. Today in the U.S., thousands of our children and citizens are dying senselessly because of guns. Just like those first-century citizens needed someone to step up and lead the charge, we need someone to come and make some change.

Sun, 02 Apr 2023 - 23min - 218 - "A Communal Unwrapping" by Pam Lee-Miller
One of the most remarkable stories in the Bible is about a close friend of Jesus who had become ill and died. Jesus receives word of his friend's illness but lingers before going to check on him. When he finally arrives, his friend had been dead for several days. Then, in an act of compassion and community, Jesus commands those close by to remove the barriers that would hold a live man where a dead one should be. With the gravestone removed and the graveclothes loosed, Lazarus was now free to live again. It was an act of liberation and an act of coming together as community.

Mon, 27 Mar 2023 - 18min - 217 - "The Intentional, Radical, Revolutionary, Law-Breaking Shepherd" by Kenny Bishop
Recently, several state governments across the country, including here in Kentucky, have passed legislation targeting the LGBTQ community. Bills that limit public school teachers to only discussing heterosexual relationships around students, bills that place strict limitations and heavy restrictions on trans individuals, their parents and caretakers, and their doctors, bills that remove multicultural and LGBTQ history from school libraries and curriculums, and bills that make drag performers criminals for appearing in public have all either recently become law, or are in the process. The LGBTQ+ community is feeling the anxiety and the pressure of being attacked by their government. Thankfully, there is one, a Shepherd, who knows and cares and walks with them every step of the way. Mon, 13 Mar 2023 - 20min - 215 - "The Helper" by Kenny Bishop
Oftentimes we believe that we must “deserve” the love we receive. We work, work, work to get approval and to feel like our life is justified — pulling our own weight, thinking that whatever life we create, and love we get, is only what we ourselves can conjure up. But the scriptures today offer the image of God as our “keeper” — always helping, always present. Nicodemus has followed all the rules and done everything HE can do, and yet he is still looking for love — for tangible connection with God. Jesus says that he must be born “of the Spirit.” It’s not all up to simply “doing the right thing!” It is about allowing the Spirit to help birth love in our lives.

The invitation was couched within an offer to help a group of failed fishermen who'd spent the night pulling empty nets from the water. Their weariness and frustration was growing more and more intense as the night sky began to brighten with the morning sun. That's when Jesus invited them to throw their nets back into the water one more time. After a moment of protest, they obliged and ended up with nets overflowing - all because they heeded the invitation.

Everyone is dealing with things. Health issues, family issues, finances, pressures at work and school, there are so many things to make our lives stressful and hard. Then things get more intense when we add a supercharged political environment that seems more interested in stoking anger than fixing problems. Twelve years ago this week, Marsha J. Moors-Charles started a new work in Lexington, Kentucky that continues today. She envisioned a place where questions could be asked, doubts would be welcomed, and healing could take place - especially for those who'd been injured by past church experiences. We are proud of the work we are able to do, and the healing that has taken place for so many. Today, as we celebrate our anniversary, we circle around a song that was composed out of despair but encouraged a civil rights leader to march on, fight on, and never give up. Just like MLK, we continue to work for the cause of justice and freedom, and pray, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand."

Many of us grew up believing that the moment of Jesus' birth was a crowded affair. Besides Mary, Joseph, and the baby of course, we place shepherds, wise men, angels, and livestock inside the barn and hang a star on top. We don't know exactly who was there or what that moment looked like, but we have strong reason to believe that the sages who brought aromatic gifts to the young Emmanuel had been traveling for a long time to find him. We call their arrival the Epiphany, and it was a special moment in the Christmas story. Guided by a shining star, they found him.
