Episode 38 Jane Stanford Part 1 of 2

Jane Stanford, co-founder of Stanford University, died on her Hawaii vacation in 1905 after drinking from a bottle of mineral water that had been laced with pure strychnine. The university president, David Starr Jordan, claimed she died of ‘natural causes,’ though Jane had survived an attempt on her life only weeks prior after drinking from a different mineral water that was found to contain rat poison. No one really believed she died naturally. And while some conjectured that Jane decided to die by suicide on that Hawaii getaway, there is far more evidence to suggest that Jane was murdered. But who actually poisoned her has never been solved.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is well known for its dedication to campus safety and student security. But its location in the city of Newark would show that no matter how tight security might be, there is always a chance for the worst to happen. And though crime in Newark was reportedly down in 2016, these statistics were meaningless to the family and friends of NJIT junior, Joe Micalizzi, who became one of the many victims of Newark’s violent crime in May of that same year.

Episode 24 Thomas Meixner

The Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Arizona had a very problematic student. After Dr. Thomas Meixner gave Murad Dervish a failing midterm grade, Murad began displaying increasingly violent behaviors. But while Dr. Meixner and several of his faculty appealed to the University administration and UA police force several times, little was done to deter Murad’s violent outbursts. And though the university expelled Murad, the act would only serve to further enrage him, and Dr. Meixner became the target. On a quiet afternoon in October of 2022, Murad Dervish shot and killed Dr. Meixner in his own office, leading to an outcry from UA faculty that prompted the university to audit and revamp its safety procedures.

His notoriety was short-lived. His tactics, however,prompted the Columbia Physical Society to change the way they view what they called 'Crackpots'

Episode 22  The Ecole Polytechnique Massacre

Quebec experienced intensive social upheaval over the course of the 20th century, affecting everything from university structures to social commentary. In 1989, Quebec women were gaining more and more footholds in previously male dominated careers. And while the Ecole Polytechnique was at the forefront of female academic empowerment, one disgruntled young man was on a mission to eradicate feminism. In the span of twenty minutes, the enraged killer murdered ten women and injured several others for the crime of trying to graduate with degrees in engineering. In the aftermath of his violence, Quebec was forced to reckon with its national views on feminism, as well as its policies on firearms.

In 1977, a graduate student named Sigrid Stevenson was brutally murdered in the performance center at the College of New Jersey. Over forty years later, her killer is still at large, and little remains of Sigrid’s memory. She called an Uber to take her back to the dorms, but the Uber never dropped Sami off on the campus. Sami vanished, her body turning up sixty miles away in the underbrush of a turkey hunting farm. As the case unfolded, it became clear that someone had posed as an Uber driver, and Sami had gotten into a car with an illicit killer. While her murder was tragic, her legacy lives on through new national rideshare policies and procedures under “Sami’s Law.”

Episode 19 Lauren McCluskey University of Utah track and field star Lauren McCluskey had everything going for her. Until she met Melvin Shawn Rowland at a club, and started dating him. Melvin told Lauren he was just 28, and a college student like her. But he was really 37, had a child – and had done ten years in prison for a sex crime. When Lauren broke up with Melvin, she started receiving bizarre and then concerning texts, and then the sextortion started. Lauren went to the campus police for help repeatedly, but her cries for help went unheard. On October 22nd, as she was on the phone with her parents, Melvin grabbed Lauren outside her dorm and shot her 7 times. The school had ignored all the warning signs – and Lauren McCluskey paid the ultimate price. Episode 18 Cheri Jo Bates In 1966, Riverside City College student Cheri Jo Bates was viciously stabbed 42 times and nearly decapitated in an alley after leaving the school library. Police discovered that her car had been deliberately disabled, and concluded that her attacker had deliberately sabotaged it in order to get to her. The case was thoroughly investigated, but had started to cool when an anonymous confession letter arrived – claiming responsibility for the murder in great detail. Additional letters added to the mystery. And then, another killer dominated the headlines in California – a killer who also sent anonymous letters that bore marked similarities to the confession letter. Was Cheri Jo Bates the first victim of the serial killer who terrorized California in the late 1960s, who has never been identified – the Zodiac?

Episode 1 Jeanne Clery In April 1986, first year student Jeanne Clery, a bubbly member of the tennis team, was brutally slain in her dorm room bed. The crime was incredibly violent and disturbing. But it did not take authorities long to find her killer, as he had confessed – and to everyone’s shock, he was also a Lehigh student. Josoph Henry told his friends he had killed a girl and stolen some of her stuff. Henry was quickly tried for the crime and sentenced to death. His sentence was eventually pleaded down to life in prison. But Jeanne’s legacy lives on, thanks to her parents. The Clerys sued Lehigh for lax security, and initiated a sweeping legislative trend that engendered a federal law named after their daughter. As a result of the Clery Act, colleges and universities that receive federal funds must be accountable for reporting crimes on their campuses, and ensuring that their students stay safe. 'The Clery Act' requires colleges and universities to report campus crime data, support victims of violence, and publicly outline the policies and procedures they have put into place to improve campus safety.
