Fri, 08 Apr 2022 - 2364 - Episode 222: 18222 Rossini: William Tell
William Tell is a French-language opera in four acts by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini to a libretto by Victor-Joseph Étienne de Jouy and L. F. Bis, based on Friedrich Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell, which, in turn, drew on the William Tell legend. The opera was Rossini's last, although he lived for nearly 40 more years. Fabio Luisi said that Rossini planned for Guillaume Tell to be his last opera even as he composed it. The often-performed overture in four sections features a depiction of a storm and a vivacious finale, the "March of the Swiss Soldiers".Paris Opéra archivist Charles Malherbe discovered the original orchestral score of the opera at a secondhand book seller's shop, resulting in its being acquired by the Paris Conservatoire.Conducted by Kathryn CavanaughCMD Grand Opera Company of VenicePurchase the music (without talk) at:Rossini: William Tell (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Tue, 22 Mar 2022 - 2357 - Episode 230: 18230 Rossini - Aureliano in Palmira
Aureliano in Palmira is an operatic dramma serio in two acts written by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto in which the librettist was credited only by the initials "G. F. R." The libretto has generally been attributed to Felice Romani, but sometimes to the otherwise unknown Gian Francesco Romanelli. It has been suggested that the latter name may have resulted from a confusion of Romani with Luigi Romanelli, La Scala's house poet prior to Romani's appointment to the post.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Rossini: Aureliano in Palmira (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Tue, 15 Mar 2022 - 2350 - Episode 226: 18226 Rossini - The Italian Girl in Algiers
Rossini wrote L'italiana in Algeri when he was 21. Rossini stated that he composed the opera in 18 days, though other sources claim that it took him 27 days. Rossini entrusted the composition of the recitatives as well as the aria "Le femmine d'Italia" to an unknown collaborator. The opera is notable for Rossini's mixing of opera seria style with opera buffa. The overture is widely recorded and performed today, known for its distinct opening of slow, quiet pizzicato basses, leading to a sudden loud burst of sound from the full orchestra. This "surprise" reflects Rossini's early admiration for Joseph Haydn, whose Symphony No. 94 in G major, "The Surprise Symphony", is so named for the same shocking and semi-comic effect.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Rossini: The Italian Girl in Algiers (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Night: it can be dreamy or comforting, but sometimes it’s frightening, full of dark secrets. So it’s no great surprise that the long hours of darkness, often spent awake, have inspired so many composers to write some of their most touching works: Chopin’s dreamy Nocturnes, for example, Schumann’s dainty “Nachtstücke” or Ravel’s spinechilling cycle “Gaspard de la nuit”, populated by sinister figures and dark premonitions. In his piano recital at the Imperial Hall at the Würzburg Residence, the young Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, brings the spirits of the night, both good and evil, to life; in his hands, Ravel’s goblin “Scarbo” dances and the water sprite “Ondine” swims through the waves, dangerously seductive.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Night Music (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! L'equivoco stravagante (The Curious Misunderstanding) is an operatic dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Gaetano Gasbarri. It was Rossini's first attempt at writing a full two-act opera.L'equivoco stravagante was first performed at the Teatro del Corso, Bologna, on 26 October 1811. It was only performed three times before the police closed the production down, possibly because the text touched on the subject of army desertion. Tue, 01 Mar 2022 - 2337 - Episode 213: 18213 24 Preludes for Solo Banjo
Hailed as “one of a kind, a banjoist who specializes in classical music and regularly knocks socks off left and right doing so,” John Bullard has released a new recording, 24 Preludes for Solo Banjo, Volume One, Books 1 & 2 Nos. I-XII was produced by multiple Juno Award and Grammy-winning David Travers-Smith. Bullard commissioned composer Adam Larrabee to write 24 Preludes which Larrabee says he wrote in a style that is “predominantly early 20th-century, at times almost neo-classical and inspired by works of J.S. Bach, Chopin, and Shostakovich that follow the long-standing tradition of writing pieces in all the major and minor keys to showcase an instrument’s versatility.” He continues, “I have tried to make each prelude feature a different form, performance technique, timbre, or rhythmic style. There is an all-pizzicato or muted piece, one featuring natural harmonics or “chimes,” a Bulgarian ratchenitsa, a Basque zortico, a passacaglia, a jazz “stride piano” style cakewalk, a theme and variations, a Brazilian choro in the style of the great Villa-Lobos, and Russian march ala Prokofiev. It has been a wonderful experience to feature the banjo in these diverse styles and create new repertoire for this beautifully unique and versatile instrument.” Available through iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Amazon, and other major streaming services, the recording can also be purchased at JohnBullard.com.Purchase the music (without talk) at:24 Preludes for Solo Banjo, Volume One, Books 1 & 2 Nos. Fri, 25 Feb 2022 - 2332 - Episode 218: 18218 Bach - The Art of Life
Pianist Daniil Trifonov is known for performances of 19th and 20th-century virtuoso repertory and hardly at all for Bach. Thus one might expect from his album Bach: The Art of Life a certain old-school Romantic quality and even music that is a bit over the top. The album is all that and more. The title is a bit unclear; the interview-format notes quote Trifonov references to Bach's personal life, but also to various scientific phenomena, but one may dispense with those and get down to the music, which doubtless showcases Trifonov's formidable technical skills. With Bach, it is not about keyboard-clattering speed but about the subtlety of inflection, and the variety brought to the little selections from the Bach's Anna Magdalena Book, pieces that almost everyone who has touched a keyboard has played, is extraordinary. Trifonov also includes a group of pieces by Bach's sons, and he does unusually well at finding what critic Harold Bloom called the anxiety of influence in these, their J.S. Bachian quality even in a stylistic world that had fundamentally changed. However, none of these really prepares the listener for the album's centerpiece, The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080, which is divided between the two CDs in the physical version. It is as imposing as the rest of the album is light, and listeners will either love the contrast (Trifonov fans are sure to fall into this category) or find it jarring. Listen to the "Contrapunctus 6 ("in stylo Francese")" for an idea of the outlandish personalities Trifonov gives each fugue here. Even those who find it a bit much will have to concede the skill involved in fully realizing each idea. Instead of breaking off at the end of the unfinished final fugue, Trifonov furnishes his own completion, and it's actually one of the more convincing tries on the market. Listeners will have their own opinions about this release, but it is absolutely never boring, and its commercial success suggests that Trifonov's legions are increasing in number.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Bach - The Art of Life (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Wed, 23 Feb 2022 - 2330 - Episode 205: 18205 Herrmann - The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Day the Earth Stood Still stands as one of the earliest and greatest examples of film exploring the mystery and fear of alien contact, using it as an allegory for our mistrust of one another. With its flying saucer, all-powerful robot, and unnervingly calm humanoid alien, much of this movie feels surreal, and that unsettled feeling is encouraged by near-perfect music by Bernard Herrmann, underscoring its action.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Herrmann: The Day the Earth Stood Still (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Before and After, the much-anticipated new album from NOW Ensemble, a group of composers and performers creating "effervescent, genre-busting" chamber music for the 21st century. Before and After-NOW's seventh album with New Amsterdam is devoted to the "refreshingly new and solidly mature" work of Rome Prize-winning composer Sean Friar. Featuring flute, clarinet, double bass, piano, and electric guitar, NOW's compositions each have "a distinct voice but a shared ethos". Friar's acclaimed piece "Velvet Hammer" appeared on NOW's equally acclaimed 2011 album, Awake; now, a decade later, the composer and ensemble reunite on Before and After. Mon, 21 Feb 2022 - 2328 - Episode 93: 18193 Meyerbeer - Le Prophete
After the brilliant success of their grand opera Les Huguenots (1836), Meyerbeer and his librettist Scribe decided to collaborate again on a piece based on a historical religious conflict. Meyerbeer's great personal wealth and his duties as official court composer to King Frederick William IV of Prussia meant that there was no hurry to complete the opera, and it was more than a decade in the composition and planning. Le prophète was first performed by the Paris Opera at the Salle Le Peletier on 16 April 1849. In the audience at the work's premiere were Chopin, Verdi, Théophile Gautier, Delacroix, Ivan Turgenev and Berlioz, among others. The production featured costumes by Paul Lormier and sets by Charles-Antoine Cambon and Joseph Thierry (acts 1 and 4), Charles Séchan (acts 2 and 5), and Édouard Desplechin (act 3). It involved the first use ever on stage of Léon Foucault and Jules Duboscq's electric arc light (régulateur à arc électrique), imitating the effect of sunlight.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Meyerbeer: Le prophète (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 in D minor, WAB 103, was dedicated to Richard Wagner and is sometimes known as his "Wagner Symphony". It was written in 1873, revised in 1877, and again in 1889. This is the 1889 version. The work has been characterized as "difficult", and is regarded by some as Bruckner's artistic breakthrough. According to Rudolf Kloiber, the third symphony "opens the sequence of Bruckner's masterpieces, in which his creativity meets monumental ability of symphonic construction." The work is notorious as the most-revised of Bruckner's symphonies, and there exist no fewer than six versions, with three of them being widely performed today.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 in D minor, WAB 103 (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major, WAB 104, is one of the composer's most popular works. It was written in 1874 and revised several times through 1888. It was dedicated to Prince Konstantin of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst. It was premiered in 1881 by Hans Richter in Vienna to great acclaim. The symphony's nickname of Romantic was used by the composer himself. This was at the height of the Romantic movement in the arts as depicted, amongst others, in the operas Lohengrin and Siegfried of Richard Wagner.According to Albert Speer, the symphony was performed before the fall of Berlin, in a concert on 12 April 1945. Speer chose the symphony as a signal that the Nazis were about to lose the war.Wagner: Prelude to Act 1 of LohengrinBrucker: Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major, WAB 104 "Romantic"Purchase the music (without talk) at:Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Jennifer Kloetzel’s lifelong journey with Beethoven began early: she was eight years old when her teacher placed the composer’s second cello sonata on her music stand, opening the door to an odyssey of intrigue and, ultimately, obsession with the composer’s music. Since then, rarely has a day passed without Beethoven being a part of Jennifer’s life. She has studied and performed all of the composer’s duos and trios. As founding cellist of the Cypress String Quartet, she spent 20 years rehearsing, performing and recording the string quartets. Jennifer now arrives at a career milestone with this recording of Beethoven’s Complete Works for Cello and Piano.TRACKLIST:LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770–1827) 12 Variations WoO 45 for cello and piano 13.09on “See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes” from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus Sonata for Piano and Cello No.1 in F, Op. 5, No. 1I. Mon, 14 Feb 2022 - 2320 - Episode 92: 18192 Meyerbeer: Les Huguenots
Les Huguenots was some five years in creation. Meyerbeer prepared carefully for this opera after the sensational success of Robert le diable, recognizing the need to continue to present lavish staging, a highly dramatic storyline, impressive orchestration, and virtuoso parts for the soloists – the essential elements of the new genre of Grand Opera. Meyerbeer and his librettist for Robert le Diable, Eugène Scribe, had agreed to collaborate on an epic work concerning the French Wars of Religion, with a drama partly based on Prosper Mérimée's 1829 novel Chronique du règne de Charles IX. Coming from a wealthy family, Meyerbeer could afford to take his time, dictate his own terms, and be a perfectionist. The very detailed contract which Meyerbeer arranged with Louis-Désiré Véron, director of the Opéra, for Les Huguenots (and which was drawn up for him by the lawyer Adolphe Crémieux) is a testament to this.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Myerbeer: Les Huguenots (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Mon, 07 Feb 2022 - 2313 - Episode 91: 18191 Meyerbeer: Robert le diable (Robert the Devil)
Robert le diable (Robert the Devil) was immediately successful from its first night on 21 November 1831 at the Opéra; the dramatic music, harmony and orchestration, its melodramatic plot, its star singers, and its sensational stage effects compelled Frédéric Chopin, who was in the audience, to say, "If ever magnificence was seen in the theatre, I doubt that it reached the level of splendor shown in Robert...It is a masterpiece...Meyerbeer has made himself immortal". Robert initiated the European fame of its composer, consolidated the fame of its librettist, Scribe, and launched the reputation of the new director of the Opéra, Louis-Désiré Véron, as a purveyor of a new genre of opera. It also had an influence on the development of ballet and was frequently mentioned and discussed in contemporary French literature.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Meyerbeer: Robert le diable (Robert the Devil) (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Tue, 18 Jan 2022 - 2297 - Episode 70: 18070 Wagner: Siegfried
The libretto arose from Wagner's gradual reconception of the project he had initiated with his libretto Siegfrieds Tod (Siegfried's Death) which was eventually to be incarnated as Götterdämmerung, the final section of the Ring cycle. Having grappled with his text for Siegfrieds Tod, and indeed having undertaken some musical sketches for it during 1851, he realized that it would need a 'preface'. At this point, he conceived that the prefatory opera, Der junge Siegfried, could act as a comic foil to the tragedy of Siegfrieds Tod. Preliminary musical sketches for Der junge Siegfried in 1851 were however quickly abandoned, although Wagner had written to his friend Theodor Uhlig that "the musical phrases are making themselves for these stanzas and periods, without my even having to take pains for them. It's all growing out of the ground as if it were wild." Shortly afterward he wrote to Uhlig that he was now planning to tell the Siegfried story in the form of "three dramas, plus a prologue in three acts"—a clear prefiguring of the Ring cycle.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Wagner: Siegfried (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! TracklistingI. St. Mark's Square: This jubilant 6/8 movement is in the style of the great Venetian master, Vivaldi. It expresses the mood of the great gathering center of the island.II. Bridge of Sighs: This slow movement is evoking the walk across the Bridge of Sighs. The bridge was the last place a prisoner would see daylight before going to the dungeons. The slow steady rhythm of the guitar are the steps of the prisoner where the strings are the sound of the heaviness of their heart.III: Carnival: This rhythmic conclusion of the piece is capturing the spirit of this festive occasion on the isle with a dissonant middle section reflecting some of the darker characters portrayed at this time. Bio:To date, Mr. Brown has released over 25 CDs either under his own name, his metal band Age of Fire, or various projects. He has performed in Europe, across the United States, and Canada. Mon, 13 Dec 2021 - 2276 - Episode 28: 18028 Puccini: La Fanciulla del West
La fanciulla del West (The Girl of the West) is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, based on the 1905 play The Girl of the Golden West by the American author David Belasco. Fanciulla followed Madama Butterfly, which was also based on a Belasco play. The opera has fewer of the show-stopping highlights that characterize Puccini's other works but is admired for its impressive orchestration and for a score that is more melodically integrated than is typical of his previous work. Fanciulla displays influences from composers Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss, without being in any way imitative. Similarities between the libretto and the work of Richard Wagner have also been found, though some attribute this more to the original plot of the play, and have asserted that the opera remains quintessentially Italian.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Puccini: La Fanciulla del West (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! Mon, 06 Dec 2021 - 2269 - Episode 24: 18024 Gluck: Iphigenie en Tauride
Iphigénie en Tauride is a 1779 opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck in four acts. It was his fifth opera for the French stage. The libretto was written by Nicolas-François Guillard. With Iphigénie, Gluck took his operatic reform to its logical conclusion. The recitatives are shorter and they are récitatif accompagné (i.e. the strings and perhaps other instruments are playing, not just continuo accompaniment). The normal dance movements that one finds in the French tragédie en musique are almost entirely absent. The drama is ultimately based on the play Iphigenia in Tauris by the ancient Greek dramatist Euripides which deals with stories concerning the family of Agamemnon in the aftermath of the Trojan War.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Gluck: Iphigénie en Tauride (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! I'm alive because beating in my chest is the heart of a deceased man, thanks to organ donation. I understand that life is filled with irony, misconceptions, confusion, and yet darkness can't exist in the light. Our mortality is also filled with so much beauty, joy, serendipitous relationships. I want to capture all of these emotions in my music and hope it may will comfort and offer hope to listeners."Cardall's compositions have evolved in the two decades he's been recording piano music. His style and technique have evolved into a modern Classical style. He gives you a very strong grounding in his piano skills. Each composition has a concise structure, simple compositional techniques, manageable technical requirements, and basic harmonies. Pieces are thought-provoking melodies, subtle, and feature simple powerful string accompaniments. In addition, Cardall employs a minimalist approach that includes repetitive patterns or pulses, steady drones, consonant harmony, and reiteration of musical phrases or smaller units.September WindsBeyond The WallNew Moon RisingFirst SnowSleeping FlowersThanksgivingAdvent PrayerLeaving NazarethHush, Little Baby (The Mocking Bird Song)Hearts of The ChildrenHearts of The FathersDecemberOur Beating HeartsA New YearPurchase the music (without talk) at:Paul Cardall - December (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show!
