Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Barbers Against Prostate Cancer.
This episode is very close to my heart as someone diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. There is a real need for awareness of the problem with 52,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, that's 144 men every day.
Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer, that's more than 12,000 men every year.
Mark Rayment and Anderson Boyce have set up Barbers Against Prostate Cancer with the aim of spreading awareness where people can openly discuss what can be a very personal subject. Our chat is very open and should be of help to anyone who may be affected.

Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Rachel Williams, founder of Stand Up To Domestic Abuse.
This one really got me !
Rachel's story is really horrific but so important because of its huge message of hope. Rachel's perpetrator was her husband of 18 years who after finally getting away from him shot her with a shotgun. I thought it could not get any worse until she made the final reveal to me which stopped me in my tracks.
Rachel has turned such a life changing experience into a way of helping others going through the same thing.
Here is more about the amazing Rachel.
After 18 years in an abusive relationship, Rachel was shot and severely injured by her violent partner in 2011.
Rachel spent several weeks in hospital and now lives with life altering injuries.
Rachel is founder of SUTDA, (Stand Up to Domestic Abuse) a Patron for WCID – What Can I Do and Ambassador for Locality Solutions, Co-Creator of Project Titanium. She also won a St David’s Award in 2020, and a winner of Crime Fighter of the Year 2023. She campaigns tirelessly and is committed to ending domestic abuse.
She has 5 successful petitions on change.org with a combined 1 million signatures. One of her petitions helped to get non-fatal strangulation on the statue book which Is now a stand-alone-offence.
She is also a qualified IDVA, Rachel also runs an online awareness Facebook page called Stand Up to Domestic Abuse.

Catherine Flay is the CEO of Restart Lives, a small London homelessness charity operating in East and West London with the aim of breaking the cycle of homelessness. Before taking up the role, Catherine was Operations Lead at the Institute of Art and Ideas, and previously an academic at Cambridge University and Birkbeck.
This episode is a perfect example of when I enjoy it as much as listeners and subscribers do. Podcasts are a wonderful opportunity of getting to know someone who you may see a lot of but not always have the time to really sit down and have a good conversation.
I really respect Catherine and the charity she heads and am grateful to have the chance to shine a light on her and the great work they do.

Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Gary Hayes, Co-Founder of PTSD999.
As a diagnosed PTSD sufferer, I was excited to have Gary Hayes from PTSD999 on the podcast. It was everything I expected and more. We had an amazing chat and at the end felt we had made a really brotherly bond.
PTSD999 was set up in 2015 by friends Gary and Simon, both of whom served within the Military and Public Sector.
As a result of their duties both have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
They realised that there wasn't any widely available accessible support for those serving, or who had served, within the Emergency Services, and their families, living with PTSD.
So they set about creating an organisation that could provide support, source and fund treatment, training and raise awareness of the impact PTSD has on a persons life.
PTSD999 has been operating as a not-for profit social enterprise since formation.
We are committed to supporting our Emergency Service workers and our aim is to ensure that awareness of PTSD within the Emergency Services grows and the Stigma associated with it, and other mental health conditions, is broken.

Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Michelle Fairley, Game of Thrones / Gangs of London.
Michelle was born in July 1965, in Northern Ireland. As a teenager she attended the Ulster Youth Theatre before moving to Belfast , where she was a member of Fringe Benefit, a repertory company where she acted alongside Conleth Hill, with whom she would later appear in television juggernaut 'Game of Thrones'. In 1986 she came to London and established herself as a considerable stage actress in 'Oleanna 'at the Royal Court, 'Dancing at Lughnasa' at the Old Vic, as Lady Macbeth with the West Yorkshire Playhouse and as Emilia, wife of the villainous Iago in the Donmar Warehouse's production of 'Othello', for which she was nominated for an Olivier award and on the strength of which she was offered the part of the fiercely matriarchal Lady Stark in 'Game of Thrones'. Following that character's demise she appeared in several American television series - '24', 'Suits' and 'The Lizzie Borden Chronicles ' - as well as playing the wife of (Southern) Irish Brendan Gleeson in the epic period film 'In the Heart of the Sea'. In 2015 she returned to Britain to appear in the play 'Splendour' in London and the television series 'Rebellion' chronicling the 1916 Easter Rising.
We have a wonderful chat about her career and also her recent visit to our Haircuts4Homeless Knightsbridge where she was a really great contributor to the evening. She is fascinating, funny, empathetic, beautiful soul. I'm sure you will love this.

Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Josie Naughton, CEO and Co-Founder of Choose Love.
Choose Love started as nothing more than a group of friends with a plan. In 2015, absolutely devastated by scenes of thousands of people forced to live in terrible conditions in the Calais refugee camp in northern France, Josie knew she had to do something.
Josie studied Anthropology but later decided to pursue a career in the music industry. This career move would see her working with the band Coldplay until the ‘refugee crisis’ in Europe in 2015.
Using her experience and contacts in the music industry, she rallied together friends with the hashtag #HelpCalais. Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Terry Waite CBE.
In January 1987 Terry Waite was captured in Beirut whilst he was attempting to secure the release of hostages. He was kept in solitary confinement for four years and kept hostage in total for almost five years, 1763 days in all. His story was on the front pages and TV screens around the world.
On 18 November 2016, Terry marked the 25th anniversary of his release.
It is difficult to think of anyone else whose integrity and humanity are so striking. When he speaks, Terry’s quiet authority and personal conviction shine through. This man suffered so much at the hands of others, and he now shares what he has learned from his experiences, with humour and clarity.
It is such a fascinating conversation and what strikes me is Terry's lack of resentment and bitterness that many of us if we went through such an ordeal would leave us consumed with it.

Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Steven Kelly. Thai prison nightmare.
I met Steven at my friends Kickboxing Gym and his story is amazing. Steven is by no means an angel, and doesn't profess to be however he is trying to make good in his life and trying to be an inspiration to others who may take that path.
His very graphic description of being a drug dealer in Thailand, his inevitable capture and incarceration in one of Thailand's toughest prison. To be placed on death row with no hope of survival is enough to defeat any man but the fighting spirit never left him.
I dont expect anyone to have any sympathy for Steven and he doesn't expect any but I understand a person who wants to change himself and even though you know you can never repay your past, you can do your best to be the best version of yourself for the future.
This is a very graphic story and has no holds barred but I feel its a story that needs to be told.

Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Danielle Thomas founder of the Domestic Abuse Retreat.
Danielle was introduced to me by former guest, Jodie Keegans who had been to Danielle's amazing Domestic Abuse Retreat. Danielle is such an inspirational human being and her story brought us both to tears. Please listen to and share this podcast as far as possible to bring light to her amazing story and this wonderful project.
A quote from Danielle,
"My name is Danielle I’m a survivor of domestic abuse
Please be aware that my story contains distressing information. I want to share my full story to highlight that extreme cases of domestic abuse happen & also in the hope that I can help other women both escape & avoid this type of abuse
I was in a relationship with who I thought was great guy. Unfortunately not long into the relationship, violence & control started
To begin with he would check my phone & stared discouraging me from going out to see friends & taking part in my hobbies
Then one night, out of nowhere, I was sleeping and was woken up by him being on top of me, punching me and pulling my hair. He had been going through my phone & looking at old Facebook messages. He found a very old innocent message from another guy & this sparked his violent outburst
After this situation the violence & control continued most weeks
I wanted to end the relationship but every time I tried it resulted in violence and told I could never leave or escape him. I felt trapped.
My spirit was broken & I didn’t know what to do. I believed this must have somehow been my fault & thought that this was now my life
I didn't think the police would take me seriously & I had no idea where to turn
On the 12th of September 2018, things took a very bad turn for the worse. He decided I needed to be taught a lesson. He locked me in my home for 3 days and tortured me. He repeatedly beat me, tipped paint all over me & made me lick it off the floor. He smashed mirrors over my head, rubbed glass into me & brutally beat me with an iron bar."
I was left with a broken jaw, broken ribs and extreme bruising
Check out her fantastic project.

I have seen Paul's posts about his book on Facebook and the title of his book intrigued me so I reached out to him to see if he would like to come on the podcast. Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Elvin Box, Prostate Cancer Campaigner.
Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
A good friend of mine, Cheryl Witham, put me in touch with a fantastic man, Elvin Box. He is a Prostate Cancer Campaigner and a generous human being. He selflessly gave me lots of his time, reassuring me and educating me on what I am facing. I knew immediately that I had to do a podcast with him to share awareness of this much underestimated disease.
We have a full and frank discussion about my experience so far and I hope this helps other people in this situation.
This is information from Elvin :
All of those born with a prostate should get to a Gym, and focus on the following exercises to enhance their continence and potency. However, once treated for prostate cancer, the following exercises are a must: core muscles; pelvic floor muscles; cardio vascular. A good workout can be done at home if you wish, and this brilliant web site provides necessary instruction: https://www.floorandcore.com/
My “No holds barred” article for the online Sex Shop, Jo Divine; which is probably the most explicit piece freely available in the public domain, about living beyond a prostatectomy, can be found here: https://www.jodivine.com/blogs/perspectives/winning-back-our-sex-life-after-prostate-cancer-a-personal-story-by-elvin-boxIf the above is failing to help sufficiently, next steps to attain and maintain an erection are:

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Ash Lyman, Barber.
I was introduced to Ash Lyman by last weeks guest, Ruby at ZeroGapped magazine. Ash is a Barber from North Carolina, USA.
Ash saw an article about Haircuts4Homeless in ZeroGapped magazine and wanted to do the same where she lives. The amazing thing is that Ash now gives free haircuts at the day center that used to help her. Ash is an amazing example of someone going full circle, helping others who have helped her. She has complete empathy with her guests and is authentic and honest and I was privileged to talk to her.
I really hope that one day I can get over there and work by her side.
Much love to Ash and the people of North Carolina.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Ruby, ZeroGapped magazine founder.
I had a great chat with Ruby. A no-nonsense female barber who when she saw there were no magazines catering for the female barber, she created one herself.
ZeroGapped magazine is the brainchild of Ruby a previous editor and publisher, she saw a gap in the market for a barbering magazine just for women who cut short hair and rock it in style.
" I trained as a Hairdresser upon leaving school at 15, training with the John English Group, entering various competitions and being awarded ‘Hairdresser Of The Year’ judged by Jingles In London.
I fell Into Sales & Marketing at 19 years old within the Publishing Industry and there I remained working for many Blue Chip organisations and clients for 28 years.
I decided I wanted to combine my skills and so I set about studying with TPG Education http://www.tpgeducation.co.uk/ In Manchester, where I completed a VTCT L2 In Barbering https://www.vtct.org.uk/qualification-category/hairdressing-barbering/
I advanced pretty quickly as I had already previous training under my belt and off I went to get the shop floor experience I needed to perfect the craft.
I have worked at numerous Barbershops and I started my own Pop-Up Barber Business 2 years ago https://www.facebook.com/femaleonlybarber/ where I operate at Pride & LGBTQ Festivals & Events across the UK Barbering for women!! This has been a roaring success and even more following the ever-popular TV Series, Gentleman Jack!! I have appeared on Radio, stage etc and various organised events.
A bit about me but now It’s all about you … the reader and I hope you enjoy ZEROGapped as much as I’ve enjoyed bringing It to life!! "

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Luke Hersheson.
Growing up with Daniel as his father, Luke’s lifelong love of all things hair began at the age of four. A full-time stylist by the time he was 19, he went on to make a name for himself as a leading session stylist – working for the biggest fashion designers in the game, as well as the likes of American, British, French and Italian Vogue. Widely regarded as one of the most influential names in hair, the vision, ingenuity and passion he shares with his father, means that Hershesons is now the go-to, aspirational brand for women from all four corners of the globe. To this day, he believes that seen through the right eyes, so-called limits are merely limitless possibilities. So, everyone can have great hair.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Stacy Paris, Scientist, Disability ambassador.
Stacy who lost both her legs to a deadly flesh-eating bug has become the first double amputee in Europe to appear on the catwalk.
Stacy Paris, 31, had her left leg amputated in 2009 after contracting necrotising fasciitis on a holiday in France.
And when the infection returned for a second time five years later she lost her remaining leg.
Now though she has overcome the odds to forge a name for herself in the fashion industry - after increasing the length of her prosthetic limbs by three inches.
Stacy, from Bridge of Allan in Stirlingshire, Scotland, said: "I used to look at fashion and nobody represented me.
"After coming out of hospital, I've slimmed down a bit from a size 10 but that was my choice.
"Then I looked at models and they are all quite tall, so I got my prosthetics changed from five foot six inches to five foot nine inches.
"Modelling was never something I wanted to do but then a couple of years passed and I did a couple of fashion shows and now I'm the only double amputee model in the UK.”

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Shandra Woworundu, sex trafficking survivor and campaigner.
SHANDRA WOWORUNTU would not have been considered at risk of being trafficked. She would never have been considered vulnerable. And yet, when she was 25 years old, Shandra became a victim of human trafficking.
Shandra graduated from college with a major in Finance and Bank Management in her native Indonesia. After graduation, she became the manager of the Treasury Department of the Korea Exchange Bank in Indonesia, specialising in money market trading. She was a brilliant financial analyst and was well on her way to a very promising career. She was also an avid human rights activist who spoke out on behalf of labor rights.
When political turbulence erupted, she lost her job because of economic, religious, and racial persecution. Looking for an opportunity to work in the US, where she thought she would be free of danger, she responded to an advertisement for a job that promised a six month position in the hotel industry in Chicago.
It was not long after arriving in the bustling terminal at New York City’s JFK airport, that Shandra realised the brutal truth that she had been trafficked. The agent who met her at the airport brought her to a van and drove her to the brothel and took control of her passport and identification. Shandra tried to protest, but he put a gun to her head, and she immediately knew that her dreams were on hold.
Shandra found herself in an underworld of sex trafficking and prostitution that she never imagined before coming to the US. She was forced to perform sexual favors for 24 hours a day at different brothels throughout NYC and Connecticut. After many attempts, she was able to escape her kidnappers by jumping out of a bathroom window in Brooklyn.
But escape was not easy. Shandra was forced to survive without money or shelter. She was far from her family and her support system back home. She finally met someone who connected her to law enforcement, and she received a referral to Safe Horizon, a victim assistance agency in New York, where advocates helped her to get back on her feet.
But Shandra wasn’t satisfied with simply escaping. She exposed the criminal trafficking enterprise to federal and local law enforcement authorities. The traffickers were brought to justice and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
After many years of living in silence, she was encouraged to join the movement against human trafficking. Shandra is now an inspirational speaker whose mission is to raise awareness and educate the community through her experience as a survivor of sex trafficking and domestic violence. She has spoken passionately to faith-based organisations, medical professionals, and legislators. She works with anti-human trafficking advocacy groups and is a legislative lobbyist in Washington DC. In 2011, she started a survivor leadership group called “Voices of Hope” through Safe Horizon. To ensure that people in Indonesia do not fall into the same trap she did, Shandra helped create a facebook page called “Stop Human Trafficking di Indonesia.”
Like all of the survivors at Survivors of Slavery, Shandra has dedicated her life to ensuring a life free of violence and captivity for people like herself.

I was introduced to Georgia Gabriel-Hooper by a previous guest Jodie Keegans and was blown away by this amazing, courageous, formidable young woman. Her story absolutely stopped me in my tracks and her bravery and fortitude blow me away.
This is a long podcast but I wanted to keep it in one episode as you may, like me, may be invested to the end.
The fact that Georgia has been through so much at such a young age and now has the energy and will to devote her life at such a young age is astounding.
Georgia not only helps countless people with her strength and hope but is campaigning, with others, in backing the call for a register of domestic abusers.
If you are moved by this as I was, please follow Georgia and give her and others the support they need.

I thoroughly enjoyed our chat and even though I was suffering from a deadly case of Man Flu ( I miraculously recovered ) I came off our chat with a real lift, such is his nature of his personality.
Paul started his PJP video series during the pandemic to give people a lift and as an antidote to the depressing situation we were in and he helped so many people in and out of the industry alike.

We had a great chat and who would think that two people talking about such an
emotive subject could laugh so much. Helen is brave, funny and inspirational.
Helen is Features Editor of the ITV Lorraine show and has enjoyed almost 20 years
in the television industry covering everything from the US elections to the latest
fashion and beauty trends. The mum of 3 created a national breast cancer
awareness campaign with Lorraine called ‘Change And Check’ whilst fighting her
own aggressive diagnosis. The simple reminder sticker initiative which goes on
shop/gym changing room mirrors has been supported by the likes of John Lewis,
Asda, David Lloyd and Monsoon (to name a few). The lifesaving campaign has been
discussed in Parliament, adopted by the police force nationwide and the Royal Mail
even put it on their post marks during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Since
launch in 2019, 48 women so far have said that ‘Change and Check’ saved their lives.
Now through treatment, Helen spends her spare time raising awareness and offering

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Leon McLeod.
I have heard Leon's inspirational story on other podcasts and was really pleased when he agreed to come on mine. This is his story in his own words.
" On Saturday 3rd June 2017 my life changed in a way I could never have prepared for.
While on a foot patrol with my colleague, we stepped into a situation that I can hardly find the right words to explain as the atrocities of the London Bridge and Borough Market terror attack began to unfold.
Although I didn’t sustain the physical injuries or worse that so many others unfortunately did, the events have no doubt left their mark.
I know for certain that many of my colleagues and fellow members of the blue light family that responded to calls for assistance have been affected along with the countless other members of the public, and while that night was beyond the norm, emergency services personnel are faced with traumatic events on a daily basis all over the country. The horrendous scenes of Grenfell and the continued attacks on British shores only serve to highlight this.
We’re all only human, but yet we all come back in day after day to do it all again never knowing what’s around the corner.
Clearly though there’s only so much a person can take, and it seems that only recently proper attention has been paid to mental health and wellbeing. No matter how big or small, things will always leave a mark. "
Please enjoy.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. with Gary Mansfield.
Fine artist, curator and Ministry of Arts Podcast host Gary Mansfield has had a most unlikely induction into the world of art: serving a fourteen year prison sentence in his early twenties for drug importation, Mansfield discovered the catalogue for the 1999 Saatchi exhibition Sensation, which brought together the group of artists known as the YBAs. and Mark Wallinger.
Inspired by the work he saw, Mansfield contacted these up-and-coming artists form his cell, asking for information on their work and careers. A bold move, Mansfield’s bold move was well received, and led to correspondences that would last throughout his sentence with the likes of Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Gary Hume, Mark Titchner and Mark Wallinger.
Under their guidance, Mansfield eventually completed a degree in Fine Art: an achievement that would come to have a profound and lasting impact on his sene of self. Since completing his degree, Mansfield has collaborated with the a number of the YBAs on various artworks and projects. He also works closely with prisoners & ex-offenders, curates large exhibitions to raising funds for various charities, and is a board member of the Koestler Trust. Intimately tied to his early life experiences, Mansfield’s works explore themes of incarceration, focusing on the material enclosures of prison life, for a powerful and politically charged aesthetic. Wed, 10 Feb 2021 - 43min - 61 - Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Hairdressing Icon, Sam McKnight.
Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Hairdressing Icon, Sam McKnight.
This episode was an absolute joy for me as it is one of my absolute hair heroes, Sam McKnight.
Celebrated session hair stylist, Sam McKnight, is the hairdresser's hairdresser. He boasts a legendary career spanning over four decades encompassing catwalk, editorial and advertising campaigns for fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Burberry and Tom Ford. A regular contributor to both British and international Vogues, W, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, i-D and Love, he has over 100 covers to his name from British Vogue alone. McKnight is also a Contributing Beauty Editor at British Vogue.
McKnight has collaborated with some of the world’s most prominent photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Nick Knight. A long-time stylist for the late Princess Diana, McKnight was the creative behind her iconic short, slicked back hairstyle in the now-famous 1990 Demarchelier shoot for British Vogue, a partnership that led to him becoming her personal hair stylist for seven years.
One of the original session stylists, McKnight initially trained as a teacher before working as an assistant at a local hairdresser in his native Scotland. Moving to London in the early 1970’s, McKnight secured a position at Molton Brown, which at the time was a leading hair salon in London’s South Molton Street. He worked on projects for London-based magazines 19 and Honey before landing his first editorial shoot with British Vogue in 1977. While working in London, he was introduced to stylists Liz Tilberis (later editor of British Vogue and Harpers Bazaar US) and Lucinda Chambers (British Vogue), who were instrumental in hiring him for high-profile editorial shoots.
McKnight has been bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award at both the Scottish Fashion Awards and Creative Head Awards 2015. He is hugely respected within the hairdressing community and is often cited as a source of inspiration or named as ‘the hairstylist I would most like to work with’ by his peers.
On November 2nd 2016, Somerset House launched Hair by Sam McKnight, a major exhibition celebrating McKnight’s impressive career. Never before has an exhibition of this kind taken place, looking at hair from a new perspective and celebrating the significant role of session hair styling in both fashion and culture throughout the decades.
In tandem, McKnight also released his first book: Hair by Sam McKnight (Rizzoli), a hardback anthology of his magazine covers, editorial shoots and personal insights into working at the heart of the fashion industry.
June 2017 saw McKnight launch a brand: Hair by Sam McKnight, in Liberty of London, injecting fashion, glamour and ease into haircare and styling. The collection is the culmination of McKnight’s knowledge and experience in the industry, giving women the tools and confidence to style their hair themselves.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Jodie Keegans Part 2. Domestic violence survivor.
Jodie Keegans first appeared on my podcast in 2020 when I released a week long series about domestic abuse which is reported to escalate during lockdown. As with the other guests, Jodie's bravery was breathtaking and has had a profound effect on me. I must add that domestic violence is not gender specific and affects all walks of life.
With the recent lockdown it's reported that domestic violence is spiralling and I thought it would be good to get Jodie back to update us, especially now that we have the podcast on video enabling us to see Jodie's bravery shine through.
Jodie speaks very frankly about her experience so it may be hard for some people to listen to.
I have even more admiration for Jodie after this and for the organisations that help people in this position.

Wed, 27 Jan 2021 - 1h 14min - 59 - Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Debbi Clark, Photographer.
Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Debbi Clark, Photographer.
Photographer Debbi Clark discusses her love of black & white and how the landscape of the face helps her find the essence of her subject….
It was accident rather than design that helped Debbi Clark discover her passion for portrait photography. Now 52, she originally studied fashion and illustration at Central St Martin’s College of Art, but when she picked up her first camera – an Olympus Pen F 35mm film camera – to record patterns for research, everything changed: ‘I just fell in love with it all. It literally transformed everything.’
Although she had a natural eye for pinpointing the shot, she admits it took a while to get up to speed with the technical side. ‘I was 26 years old when I started, and I didn’t always get the shot that was in my mind’s eye because I didn’t have the technical experience. So, when it started to come together and truly gel, it was amazing.’
Black and white landscape photography was Debbi’s first love, using the Olympus Pen D2 35mm film camera. ‘I was slightly obsessed with clouds,’ she says. ‘You could get so many nuanced shades within both black and white – to me, it almost became colour.’
Debbi’s impressive portfolio includes high-fashion editorial for the likes of Italian Vogue, and interiors, but it’s her striking mono portraits that have helped make her mark in the photography world. Echoes of provocative fashion photographer Helmut Newton and Terry O’Neill (the British photographer often hailed as one of the greatest celebrity photographers of the 20th century) are visible in her work, but her portraits are fast becoming iconic in their own right.
‘In a way, people’s faces are similar to landscapes,’ she says. ‘Their bone structure, lines and the way they look at certain angles are what I work with. It’s then about capturing their essence.’
“I love the incredible quality of image you get with this camera.”
Well-known faces she has immortalised include a rakish Paul Weller getting fitted for a suit, actress Sadie Frost and actor Damian Lewis. ‘I love colour, but I always seem to veer back to black and white,’ Debbi explains. ‘It’s a medium that seems to ‘own’ it when it comes to portraits. I know instantly when I meet the subject which direction I’ll go in.’
London-based Clark says she doesn’t get star-struck, apart from a commission to shoot the photographer’s photographer – Lord Snowdon – at his own studio at home in Kensington in 2012. Snowdon wore a suit and rather serious demeanour and suggested Debbi harness the studio’s natural light during the session, which she shot on an Olympus OM-D E-M5.
Keen to go her own way, she initially used an LED daylight panel from the left side, but Snowdon still pressed for his original idea: ‘And of course he was right,’ Debbi says. ‘As I admitted that out loud, the smallest little smile formed on his face and that was the shot. He became truly alive in that moment because he had shared something he was passionate about.’
A drive to share her own knowledge and inspire others led Debbi to set up the Sir Hubert von Herkomer Arts Foundation in 2013. Aimed at providing a gateway to photography and the arts for underprivileged and gifted children between the ages of five and 18, it has also led to a successful collaboration with Olympus who recently provided 12 EPL-8 cameras for a pop-up summer project in Camden, London, where the novice photographers shot a film documentary, music video and mini-exhibition.
The project has also seen Debbi using her beloved Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II at every opportunity. She says: ‘I’ve worked with lots of cameras – including Nikon and Canon – but the clarity with the Olympus is beyond comparison. I love the incredible quality of image you get with this camera, but it’s far more than that. The huge amount of manual control you have is brilliant, the autofocus system is quick and intelligent to use, the ISO range is fantastic and of course, the four-thirds sensor on this beauty is insane! It all comes together to make this camera one of the best I’ve used – and believe me, I’ve tried quite a few!’
Debbi Clark accepts private commissions. See more of her pictures at debbiclark.com.

" Why the move into podcasts?
Podcasts are a wonderful medium and anyone who knows me knows how I love to chat with people. I find life and people fascinating and enjoy gaining insights into what makes people tick. So why not bring my business experience (things I got right, things I got very wrong and things I did just about ok) and a guest’s business insight to share with you?
Why the name Hope & Patience?
Firstly, I believe they are two vital qualities required to thrive.
And secondly, Hope & Patience were the names of my two amazing Grannies. They were complete opposites … one small and squeezy, the other tall and willowy. Hope lived in East Suffolk … Patience in West. Both were strong, capable, spirited women who put themselves last in the pecking order. I have no idea what they would think of being the name of my podcast venture but hopefully they would give it the thumbs up! "
Amelia's energy and positivity are infectious. We had a great chat and she even sent me some of her beautiful chocolate.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Darren Garwood author.
Darren Garwood is the author of Jackson Superhero and it was a privilege to have him as a guest on my podcast and hear his inspirational story.
Jackson Superhero might not be a real name, but it is a story about a real boy, and as the name suggests, Jackson is far from ordinary.
From birth, the real Jackson was like every other child. He passed all the regular milestones like talking, eating by himself, and generally enjoying life. But just after his first birthday Jackson started to lose key skills. This is when he was diagnosed with Krabbe disease and wasn't expected to live beyond the age of two.
By mustering all his strength, and with a lot of love from his mum and dad, Jackson is still doing well at age of five. The moral of the story is that while he may be limited during the day, in the evening, when he dreams, Jackson can be anything he wants to be.
We believe this fantastic story of a young boy going above and beyond, will bring inspiration to parents and children who, for one reason or another, have to muster their superpowers on daily basis. This book is for those who have to push back against daily challenges, for whom comfort and happiness require extra patience, strength, and love. Just as importantly, it's for those who rely on the support and inspiration of others. No matter what kind of day you are having, we believe these books, still will make you smile.
Please enjoy.

Richard Ashforth // Saco
Saco has a belief that the desire to learn is born from the desire to achieve. In the ever-evolving world of hair, achievement is dependent on knowledge and expertise. Education is key in the advancement of your skills and ability to succeed.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Taban Shoresh.
Former child genocide survivor, Taban Shoresh is the founder of The Lotus Flower, a non-profit for women and girls that currently supports survivors of conflict in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq and Germany. Taban first established The Lotus Flower in London in 2016, after witnessing ISIS committing genocide in her homeland, some three decades after she endured similar atrocity and devastation during Saddam Hussein’s reign. With a tight-knit community of colleagues and advocates, Taban enables women and girls to flourish safely and on their own terms. As a fledgling charity, they have little funding but are making a significant impact. A hardworking network of staff deliver a host of programmes on the ground in Kurdistan which drive social and economic change through projects such as the Women’s Business Incubator, Boxing Sisters, Sewing Sisters and Baking Sisters, which empower women to learn skills that they can use to earn a living.
Hearing Taban's story literally took my breath away. Taban is an absolutely amazing woman and her story needs to be shared worldwide and full support given to her charity.

Sat, 15 Aug 2020 - 1h 00min - 37 - Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Kim Burnham, the bee man.
This weeks episode is a few days late because it follows on so well with last week’s John Little Podcast that I wanted it to jump the queue.
This week I’m talking to the bee man Kim Burnham, who began bee keeping with his son Sam as a way of bonding but it has now become a way of life.
“Sam and Kim, have worked together since 2012. Learning their craft separately - Kim (as a young man in the United States), Sam (as a Bee Keeping Apprentice). Their first apiary sites were located within local Essex country parks e.g. (Langdon Hills and Wat Tyler). They both realised very early on that they needed to bridge the gaps between current bee farming techniques and not impactIng the other wild pollinators. The answer was to find a balance and actively maintain it, hence adopting and embracing fully a holistic approach with a test and measure capability.
As a business Sam and Kim realised they would have to do more than just the seasonality of honey. So Sam began researching bee venom (apitoxin) and later other honey bee products and through discussion and more focused research they pieced together what was required to purify each to cosmetic grade. They then began looking at serums as they wanted to differentiate from their competitors e.g. (creams all contain up to 60% water (H2O) and legally require biocides for safe use). “.... I started Hear Me, See Me. Podcast to focus on extraordinary people hence why my range of guests is quite eclectic. I’ve known John Little and his family for many years and his ethos and passion for conservation has constantly blown me away.
“I’ve always liked a plant, especially the wild sort. Ever since i was a kid i’ve used our native flowers, and then finally in 1998 I started the Grass Roof Company. Since then we have introduced wild landscapes into schools, public space and onto roofs
We can use this love of plants as a tool to change places for people and for other wildlife. Greenspace is key in making places liveable and good. We are privileged to work in public space as the potential to change and improve our towns and cities is huge and so underplayed.”...John Little.

“Hear Me, See Me.” Podcast, Jack Eames, photographer.
Jack Eames is a fashion-led hair & beauty, stills and motion photographer based in London.
Seeking out a sense of genuine connection and resonance is at the heart of his work. His challenge is to pursue and explore every possible avenue to find instances where these come together on set.
Working with and supported by expert teams, often on dynamic and complex productions, he looks for a sense of calm and honesty in the meticulously crafted pictures. He believes in creating a quality of ‘energetic stillness’ to convey an intimate and often seductive, sensual interpretation of the subject.
Clients include: Balmain, Babyliss Pro, Coca Cola, L’Oreal, Liberty of London, Tangle Teezer, Toni & Guy, GHD, Schwarzkopf, Saatchi & Saatchi, Tresemme, Vogue, Wella
Jack has volunteered his time and talent on many occasions to Haircuts4Homeless. His calmness and gentle way of working has been so effective in the environment we work. I have the utmost respect for him and value him as a true friend.

Hear Me, See Me. Podcast. Hetty Campbell, Haircuts4Homeless Milton Keynes team leader.
Hetty Campbell is an amazing human being who despite some very debilitating health conditions manages three of our Haircuts4Homeless projects around the Milton Keynes area and is looking to open more when we come out of lockdown.
I've only known her a short time but have come to respect her immensely and look forward to you hearing her story.
