In this podcast, we delve into the harrowing circumstances faced by Afghan women and girls, whose fundamental rights and freedoms are being relentlessly eroded under the Taliban's rule. We explore the impact of these repressive measures not only on individual lives but also on the very fabric of Afghan society. Join us as we shed light on the struggles, the silenced voices, and the unwavering spirit of these women and girls, who, against all odds, continue to hold onto the hope of a brighter, more inclusive future. We invite you to listen and share this story with friends and family. Deconstructing International Women's Day (ساختارشکنی روز زن) In this podcast, I delve into the complex layers of International Women's Day, challenging the conventional narrative surrounding the celebration. From the historical struggles of women's suffrage to the contemporary challenges faced by Afghan women, we confront uncomfortable truths about the limitations of this day. I dissect the commercialisation and tokenism that often accompany the observance, questioning whether the true essence of the day gets lost amidst the sea of slogans and hashtags. I invite listeners to reevaluate the meaning of International Women's Day and consider how it can be more inclusive and meaningful for women worldwide. As we navigate through these important conversations, I extend my gratitude to you dear listener for your willingness to engage in dialogue that challenges norms and fosters deeper understanding. We explore its hidden forms and how it subtly infiltrates our thoughts and beliefs, often unnoticed. Join us as we aim to raise awareness and challenge these concealed prejudices. Thank you for tuning in, and please share this episode to help spread understanding and support the fight against anti-Semitism.

Ep78. Israel and Palestine: Two Homelands One Hope (اسرائیل و فلسطین: آیا حمزیستی ممکن است؟) Note: This podcast is in Farsi Welcome to a deeply personal episode where I once again delve into the sensitive and often misunderstood topic of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. In today's show, I share my hopes, fears, and disappointments surrounding this complex issue that has troubled hearts and minds for generations. I speak from the heart, not as an expert but as someone who wishes to build bridges rather than walls. I talk about the obstacles to co-existence, from bigotry to anti-semitism to deeply entrenched biased views that poison the well of discourse. I pose challenging questions that many are afraid to ask: Can love overcome hatred? Is there room for hope amidst despair? And most crucially, is the path to co-existence and healing possible for Israel and Palestine? While I don't have all the answers, I firmly believe that dialogue and understanding are the first steps toward change. I share personal stories and reflections that I hope will plant the seed of hope rather than cultivate the weeds of hate. I aim to reach out to both sides, to humanize rather than demonize, and to find common ground in a terrain often marred by division. Thank you for listening. I encourage you to keep an open mind, and more importantly, an open heart. If this episode resonates with you, please share it far and wide, for it is only through collective empathy and understanding that we can hope to make a lasting impact. Thank you 🙏 Maiwand

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict - From Antisemitism to Selective Outrage (جنگ اسراییل و فلسطین) Note: This episode of the podcast is entirely in English It's high time we cut through the noise and face an unsettling reality: many within the Afghan community are fueling a vicious cycle of hatred and violence. I've been through two great wars—the civil war in Kabul and a more insidious war, a war on reason, logic, and reality within the Afghan mindset. What I've come to realize is devastating. There's a dark current of anti-Semitism and selective outrage that is impossible to ignore anymore. Ideas are powerful, and bad ideas have horrific consequences. Afghanistan is neck-deep in those consequences, and it's time we confront them. I've watched as some of my fellow Afghans display more hatred for Israelis than compassion for the Palestinian people. It's not about justice or equity anymore. It's about settling deep-seated, irrational scores. If you think this is hyperbole, ask yourself: could you ever, in any context, justify the beheading of children? Yet, this is what some are doing—defending the indefensible, and for what? To perpetuate a narrative born from misguided ideas. We Afghans have been fed a toxic cocktail of ethno-nationalism, extremism, and especially, anti-Semitism from our youngest years. The resurgence of these twisted ideologies is a blight on our collective identity. If you can't condemn violence, blind-hatred, terrorism, it means you're part of the problem. Here's a wakeup call to those masquerading as social justice activists: your selective empathy is an affront to the very principles you claim to uphold. When you only cry out for justice when it suits your narrative, you're not an activist; you're a hypocrite. You don't get to pick and choose whose lives matter based on your biased world view. As I speak, the people of Israel are under siege. Let's make it absolutely clear: the attackers are not freedom fighters; they are terrorists. Cold-blooded terrorists targeting innocent lives, and if you can't condemn that, you're morally bankrupt. I stand here today not to take sides in a political struggle, but to take a stand against inhumanity, against the sick ideologies that fuel this cycle of violence. If a bomb falls, or a gun fires, it's a loss for all of humanity, regardless of what side you're on. When we pick sides in acts of terror, we become part of a vicious cycle. I dream of a day where both Palestinian and Israeli children can live without the constant shadow of terror looming over them. In a war, there are no winners; In a war we all lose a bit more of our humanity with each falling shell and each spilt drop of blood. It's important to remember: When it's war, humanity loses, every single time. My thoughts are with everyone, Palestinians and Israelis, who have been affected by the recent atrocities. Thank you! Thu, 05 Oct 2023 - 1h 51min - 76 - Ep74. Divine Wine: Persian Poetry's Love Affair with Wine (می و معنویت در شعر و ادبیات پارسی)
Ep74. The Elixir of Verses: Wine in Persian Poetry (می و معنویت در شعر و ادبیات پارسی) In this episode, we explore the timeless relationship between wine and poetry in Persian literary tradition. From the days of pre-Islamic Persia, where wine was celebrated as a divine nectar, to its complex role post the arrival of Islam and the Arabs, the notion of wine has been intricately woven into the very fabric of Persian culture and literature. We begin by tracing the origins of wine's presence in Persian poetry, seeking answers to why this elixir has fascinated poets for centuries. The episode delves into the various forms that wine takes in Persian literature: the literal, the metaphorical, and the transcendental. The arrival of Islam and the Arab influence presented a paradoxical relationship for wine in Persian poetry. On one hand, Islam’s prohibitions on alcohol meant that wine as a real beverage became a subject of scrutiny and restriction. On the other hand, it continued to flow through the verses of Persian poets, evolving as a symbol of spiritual intoxication and divine love, a metaphor that Sufi poets like Rumi and Hafez have made almost synonymous with mysticism. In this episode, we separate the literary wine from its real counterpart, exploring how Persian poets used wine as an allegory to discuss deeper topics like love, divine unity, and the human soul. From Omar Khayyam’s quatrains to Hafez's ghazals, wine serves as a multifaceted symbol—sometimes representing worldly pleasure and at other times, the intoxicating love of the divine. Perhaps most fascinating is the immense influence this relationship has had on Persian poetry and culture, and vice versa. The episode explores how the representation of wine in poetry has contributed to its enduring status in Persian culture, while also reflecting on how evolving cultural views on wine have found their way back into the poetic tradition. Join me as I raise a metaphorical glass to the poets of yore and the verses that continue to inebriate us. Cheers to the poetic and the poeticised in Persian literature’s intoxicating dance with wine. 🍷 Maiwand

Ep73. In Vino Veritas: The Allure of Wine in Persian Poetry (ساقی و می و میخانه در شعر فارسی) Note: Please note that this episode is in Farsi. “O wine, with thee is joy, take away a thousand sorrows,” begins a mesmerizing verse by Hafiz, setting the tone for a riveting journey into the heart of Persian literature. Join on for a deep dive into the intoxicating world of Persian poetry as we unravel the metaphors of wine, cup, cupbearer, and the tavern. These symbols, prevalent in the works of iconic poets like Rumi, Khayyam, and Saadi, have transcended mere poetic devices, becoming entwined with the spiritual and cultural fabric of the Persian world. In this episode, we'll sip from the cup of history, understanding the evolution of wine as both a literal and figurative presence in Persian literature. From the spirited taverns to the ethereal realms of Sufi mysticism, the imagery of wine and its accompaniments have been wielded with unparalleled finesse by Persian poets, encapsulating themes of love, divine ecstasy, and the transient nature of life. As verses flow, so does the music, with traditional Persian melodies accentuating the poetic recitations, creating a symphony that is sure to transport you to a bygone era. Be prepared to be enchanted by a cascade of verses, insights, and melodies as we toast to the timeless allure of wine in Persian poetry. Join me for an episode brimming with passion, poetry, and a deep reverence for the art of metaphor and meaning. Cheers!

Ep71. What is literature and why read it? (چرا باید ادبیات بخوانیم؟) Note: This episode is in Farsi In this episode of our podcast, we embark on a reflective journey, unravelling the complex layers of literature and its profound implications on our lives. This episode illuminates the intricate interplay of words and thoughts, demonstrating how novels, essays, prose, and poems transcend the realm of mere entertainment, moulding our ethical, moral, and psychological perspectives. Within the beguiling maze of narratives and verses, literature houses a vast repository of human experience. I dissect its ability to sharpen our understanding of ethical and moral dilemmas, transporting us to moral crossroads, and urging us to confront and negotiate with the subtleties of right and wrong. From the heights of heroism to the depths of villainy, literature compels us to delve into the essence of our moral compass. Moreover, I delve into how literature, like a well-versed psychologist, presents a myriad of characters, unfolding the complexities of their minds, and nudging us to introspect our own psyches. By walking a mile in the shoes of these characters, we augment our empathy and compassion, enriching our human interactions. Exploring the socio-political landscape through the lens of literature, I discuss how narratives guide us through historical epochs and political upheavals, educating us in a way that sterile facts often fail to do. Literature not only paints the past with its vibrant palette but also projects possible futures, shaping our understanding of society and governance. Whether through the cadence of a poem or the profoundity of an essay, literature has the power to illuminate the human condition, encourage critical thinking, and enhance our capacity for empathy. Join me in this episode as we celebrate the universal language of literature, the mirror to our collective soul. Together, let's reaffirm the power of words in shaping our world. Maiwand

Thu, 16 Feb 2023 - 1h 35min - 55 - Ep54. Surviving the Storms of Life: A Stoic Guide (مقابله با سختی ها)
Ep54. Surviving the Storms of Life: A Stoic Guide to Navigating Natural Disasters (مقابله با سختی ها به کمک فلسفه رواقی) Note: This episode is in English Hi everyone, and welcome to episode 54 of Jaade- Maiwand Podcast. Today, we're going to be discussing the Stoic approach to natural disasters and how these teachings can provide comfort and guidance during difficult times. But before we delve into the topic at hand, let's take a moment to just talk about the world we live in. I mean, it's truly remarkable how humans have managed to build these towering skyscrapers, travel to the moon, and create artificial intelligence. Yet, we're still at the mercy of natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. It's like Mother Nature is reminding us that despite all our advancements, we're still just tiny specks in the grand scheme of things. The recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have once again reminded us of the devastating power of nature and the toll that natural disasters can take on communities and individuals. As we send our thoughts and prayers to those affected, it's also important to consider the role that philosophy can play in helping us make sense of such events (if such a thing is even possible)..to see if philosophy can provide us some consolation, comfort and guidance in such difficult times. That's why I've decided to dedicate this episode of the podcast to exploring the topic of natural disasters from the perspective of Stoicism, one of the great schools of ancient philosophy. Through a careful examination of Stoic teachings, I hope to shed light on how this philosophy can provide us with the tools we need to navigate the challenges that arise in the aftermath of a disaster and cultivate resilience, strength, and a sense of purpose in the face of adversity. So whether you're a seasoned Stoic or you are simply curious about how Stoiccism is and how this philosophy can be applied to contemporary life, I invite you to join me as I delve into these important and timely topics. The world can be a complex and uncertain place, but with the right perspective,..I believe..we can find meaning and purpose even in the face of tragedy. Thank you! Maiwand

Ep53. Choosing Life: An Existential Exploration of Choice and Responsibility (ژان پل سارتر ، قیامی علیه خودفریبی) With every choice we make, we forge our own path and carve out a unique journey, shaping our existence like a master sculptor shaping a work of art, and that's why I chose to speak in English on this episode, to reach a wider audience and let my voice ring out, unencumbered by linguistic barriers, as I explore the complexities of existentialism and the beauty of choice. I chose to do this episode in English, not because it was the easiest path, but because it was an opportunity to embrace my freedom and challenge myself to boldly step into uncharted territories, just as Sartre's existentialism invites us to do. In this episode we'll dive into the depths of human nature, examine the role of philosophy in shaping our beliefs and understanding of the world, and marvel at the beauty and power of art. So tune in and discover a new way of looking at the world that will inspire and hopefully empower you. Sources: Jean-Paul Sartre, Existentialism and Humanism (1946) Thank you. Maiwand

Ep52. In conversation with Zarifa Ghafari (گفت و شنود با ظریفه غفاری) In this episode, we have a special guest. I speak with one of the most courageous women alive. She is the former mayor of Maidan Wardak, a small town 40 KM away from Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. She is also the Founder & General Director of Peghla FM Radio, the Founder & CEO of APAW Org, and a Human Rights Activist. She has written a book called 'Zarifa' and recently, a Netflix Documentary (In Her Hands) was released about her life and escape from Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul on Aug 15th, 2021. There have been multiple terrorist attacks on her life. She survived a horrific traffic accident, and she was almost burned alive. It is quite a miracle she is still with us today. This is the story of an übermensch. This is the story of a brave young girl determined to make a difference in a male-dominated world. I am very thankful for having her on the show. Ep48. Untold stories: In conversation with Sahraa Karimi (ناگفته ها: گفت و شنود با دکتر صحرا کریمی) In this episode I speak with one of the most talented Afghan filmmakers, directors, scenario writers and former head of Afghan Film Dr. Sahraa Karimi. We discuss a wide range of topics, from Sahraa Karimi's childhood to her path towards becoming a film director to her many migrations and years of work in Afghanistan where she experienced both love and hatred. We also discuss the art of filmmaking and there is a rapid fire question section at the very end! According to many she is a controversial figure who dares to challenge society and does not shy away from confrontation and breaking taboos. It was fun speaking with her. I very much enjoyed our conversation and I learned a lot from our chat. It is not easy to be a woman in Afghanistan. It is a thousand time harder to be in a leadership position in a tribal and undeveloped society such as that of Afghanistan. I personally admire and salute her courage and bravery and would like to wish her the best in all her future endeavours. I am also looking forward to her future films and writings. Thu, 27 Oct 2022 - 12min - 45 - Ep44. The soul of the world (روح جهان - دفاع از مقدسات)
Ep44. The soul of the world (روح جهان - دفاع از مقدسات) In this episode I defend the experience of the sacred against today’s fashionable forms of atheism. Our personal relationships, moral intuitions, and aesthetic judgments hint at a transcendent dimension that cannot be understood through the lens of science alone. To be fully alive and to understand what we are, is to acknowledge the reality of sacred things. Rather than an argument for the existence of God, or a defense of the truth of religion, this episode is an extended reflection on why a sense of the sacred is essential to human life and what the final loss of the sacred would mean. In short, the episode addresses the most important question of modernity: what is left of our aspirations after science has delivered its verdict about what we are? Drawing on art, architecture, music, and literature, I suggest that the highest forms of human experience and expression tell the story of our religious need, and of our quest for the being who might answer it, and that this search for the sacred endows the world with a soul. Evolution cannot explain our conception of the sacred; neuroscience is irrelevant to our interpersonal relationships, which provide a model for our posture toward God; and scientific understanding has nothing to say about the experience of beauty, which provides a God’s eye perspective on reality. Ultimately, a world without the sacred would be a completely different world, one in which we humans are not truly at home. Yet despite the shrinking place for the sacred in today’s world the paths to transcendence remain open. I hope you enjoy the show. Maiwand
Thu, 20 Oct 2022 - 28min - 44 - Ep43. The God Delusion (پندار خدا)
Ep43. The God Delusion (پندار خدا) Does God exist? Are the world's greatest monotheistic religions (e.g. Judaism, Christianity, Islam) true? Should we all rather be atheists? Join me on this podcast as I discuss the impossibility of God's existence by providing known and lesser known proofs and arguments for the non-existence of a supreme and powerful being. It is logically impossible for an all good, all knowing, and all powerful to exist. Such a being has no limits to its ability. A good being will always eliminate all the evil that it can. Evil exists, so God must not. In addition, we also talk about the 3 giants of philosophy and their views about history and historiography: Hegel, Marx and Nietzsche. Finally, we discuss history in the context of the history of Afghanistan. Professor Chiel van den Akker is Lecturer in Historical Theory at the Department of Art and Culture, History and Antiquities. Sun, 18 Sep 2022 - 1h 58min - 40 - Ep39. Afghanistan – One year of Taliban rule (یک سال حکومت طالبان - گفتگو با الیور مارسدن)
Ep.39 Afghanistan – One year of Taliban rule (یک سال حکومت طالبان - گفتگو با الیورمارسدن) It has been one year since the fall of Afghanistan and Afghans are still suffering. One US soldier puts it this way when he talks about the mission to 'liberate' Afghanistan: "At night, when I am alone, and the demons come, I can hear these wails. They haunt me. When I am awakened by their wails, I often remember the looks of disgust on the women's faces. And I am ashamed." The American withdrawal was a disaster for Afghanistan, the wider region and probably also for America's national security. There has been a steady brain drain, an exodus of Afghan professionals since Taliban takeover, leaving Afghanistan to start over from scratch. Losing such human capital has been disastrous for the country. In this episode I talk with Oliver Marsden, a journalist currently based in Beirut Lebanon who has reported extensively from Afghanistan since Taliban takeover a year ago. Wed, 24 Aug 2022 - 12min - 38 - Ep37. Tajiks - Iranians of the East? (تاجیکان: ایرانیان شرق؟)
Ep37. Tajiks - Iranians of the East? (تاجیکان: ایرانیان شرق؟) Join me for this important conversation with Prof. Richard Foltz, scholar of Iranian studies at the Concordia University, Montreal Canada. We cover a lot of ground, 5000 years of Tajik history to be precise! Here are some of topics we discuss at length: - Aryan peoples migration into Central Asia - Sogdians/Bactrians - Turk/Tajik dichotomy - Arabs inavasions - Islamisation of Persia - Sassanian/Samanid Empires - Mongol invasion - Moghul Empire - Soviet and Post-Soviet periods We also discuss the current Afghanistan/Tajikistan/Uzbekistan situation including some of the current events including Taliban take over and what this means for Tajiks and other ethnic groups of the region. Aug 15th is a dark day for many Afghans inside and outside of the country. Taliban do not seem to be interested in any constructive dialogue. Therefore, it's on the rest of us to do exactly that and try to build bridges and have impactful and meaningful conversations that can be of benefit to all of us. This was a great experience and I really hope to get Prof. Foltz back on the podcast soon. I learned a ton and very much enjoyed our conversation! Here is the link to Prof Foltz book: English: https://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Tajiks-Iranians-Library-Middle/dp/1838604464/ref=sr_1_3?crid=22MFAZTMYO4DX&keywords=Richard+Foltz&qid=1660504062&sprefix=richard+foltz%2Caps%2C67&sr=8-3 And here is the BBC Farsi interview of Prof. Foltz: https://www.bbc.com/persian/tv-and-radio-48236839 If you are enjoying the show, then please make sure to give your favourite episode a thumbs up and don't forget to share with friends and family 🙏 Enjoy the show. Mon, 15 Aug 2022 - 2h 18min - 37 - Ep36. Musica Poetica: Heraclitus & Democritus (موسیقی شاعرانه: هراکلیتوس و دموکریتوس)
Ep36. Musica Poetica: Heraclitus & Democritus (موسیقی شاعرانه: هراکلیتوس و دموکریتوس) The sheer reality of life, with all its ups and downs, awareness of our mortality, sickness, laughter, tragedy and comedy of life, these some aspects of life that we humans have to deal with thru-out life 🙂 Heraclitus and Democritus are famous greek philosophers who thought very differently about the world and our human existence. Or rather, they both agreed that life is absurd, but while Heraclitus saw the whole existence as a tragedy, Democritus however thought of it as a comedy 🤡 In this episode I discuss both these worldviews and try to find out whether we should laugh or rather cry about the meaninglessness and absurdity of life 😔😂 Join me as I sit down with these two greats and try to grasp their philosophies 😏 Maiwand ✌️

Wed, 06 Jul 2022 - 25min - 35 - Ep34. Qawwali: A brief history (قوالی: تاریخچه مختصر)
Ep34. Qawwali: A brief history (قوالی: تاریخچه مختصر) Qawwali is a form of Sufi Islamic devotional singing, originating from the Indian subcontinent. Originally performed at Sufi shrines or dargahs throughout South Asia, it gained mainstream popularity and an international audience in late 20th century. Qawwali music received international exposure through the work of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Aziz Mian and Sabri Brothers. Qawl (Arabic: قَوْل) is an "utterance (of the prophet)", Qawwāl is someone who often repeats (sings) a Qaul, Qawwāli is what a Qawwāl sings. A lead vocalist and a small team of side singers take turns weaving in several different melodies, some of which will be improvised. After a long, improvised introduction for the main song, the singers all join in and vie with each other as the song builds towards its crescendo and sudden, abrupt end. It’s all about the build-up, so Qawwali songs are rarely short - there are no radio edits here. They can be anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes long, with one of the longest known Qawwali songs - Hashr Ke Roz Yeh Poochhunga by Aziz Mian Qawwal - being almost two hours long! Qawwali has a deeply religious history dating right back to the 13th century. It is the music of Sufi-sm, also known as 'Islamic mysticism,' whose followers believe in learning from teachers, rather than relying on texts. The influence of Sufism is huge within Islamic literature, music and the wider artistic beyond. f you're at a Qawwali performance, you could be in for quite the experience. Qawwali music is performed with the intention of bringing listeners to a state of religious ecstasy and is known to hypnotize both performers and listeners. The reaction to Qawwali is intended to bring everyone involved to a spiritual union with God. If you get the chance to see a performance it can be an intense and profoundly moving experience, no matter your personal faith. Qawwali music has moved with the times. Women are now welcomed both to perform and watch it, which they weren't for a very long time. It has also become really popular all over the world. Qawwali music was only really known in South Asia until the late 20th century, but after world music artists began working elements of Qawwali into their work, things went global. I hope you enjoy the show! Don't forget to give it a thumbs up 👍 And don't forget to spread love and kindness ❤️ Love you all 🍷 Maiwand

Thu, 02 Jun 2022 - 14min - 32 - Ep31. On Historiography (شيوه تاريخ نگاري و تاريخ نگري)
Ep31. On Historiography (شيوه تاريخ نگاري و تاريخ نگري) Tune in as I explore the history of history-writing itself! It's important that we look into historiography in order to understand how history has reached us thru history books. Needless to say, there has been a lot of discussions around this throughout history. Historians disagree about what is an actual historical fact and what's not. They are humans and therefore their views can indeed be eschewed which should not surprise us. In this episode I try to make sense of what history is or perhaps, should be and should not be. How it has shaped our understanding of ourselves and our world. Hope you enjoy the show. Don't forget to give it a thumbs up! This encourages me and helps the show :) Thank you! Maiwand
Tue, 31 May 2022 - 14min - 31 - Ep30. "Game of Thrones" (پادشاه گردشی)
Ep30. "Game of Thrones" (پادشاه گردشی) Dear listener, Jaad-e Maiwand is back! I had to deal with some personal set-backs, but I managed to finally get myself together and give it yet another go. Podcasting is my passion. I love making shows that we all can enjoy listening to. Shows that hopefully can change some minds along the way, including my own! Life's struggles are not foreign to me. They are part and parcel of the human condition. All we can ever manage is to take a moment, reflect, gather ourselves, and give life another shot. We all have to go thru dark times, but as Rumi says "the wound is the place where the light gets in". As a fan of Nietzsche, I believe in 'amor fati' or love of fate. And with the Stoics I too believe in the principle of 'askēsis' or developing clear judgment and inner calm. This might not be the best times in human history, but we definitely have had it worse. This is no time to be cynical or dismissive about the world we live in. I appreciate being alive among friends, family and the love of my life. That should be enough reason to get any of us back on track. 🙂 Let us show some gratitude for what we have. We all can be a bit more kinder to each-other. Or as Marcus Aurelius once said "The only wealth which you will keep forever is the wealth you have given away." This podcast is that little bit of 'wealth' which I am 'giving away' 😉 Hope you enjoy the show. If you do, then do give the show a thumbs-up 👍 which would encourage me and also support the show. Take care and don't forget to spread love and kindness. 🙏 Maiwand ❤️
Fri, 20 May 2022 - 08min - 30 - Ep29. Toxic femininity among Afghan females (سمی زنانه در میان زنان/دختران افغان)
S1. Ep29. Toxic femininity among Afghan females (سمی زنانه در میان زنان/دختران افغان) March 8th is International Women's Day. A day to celebrate and commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. ❤️ However, in this episode I talk about female toxicity, which believe it or not, is an actual thing. Especially among my fellow female Afghans. 🧐 This may be considered a taboo topic to discuss, especially on a day such as today. I know what you're thinking: what a party-pooper! 😭 But, I am fine with that label, as long as we dare to open up this can of worm and look the elephant in the room directly in the eye 👁 Know that I will respect women, Afghan or otherwise, who respect themselves and work work, day in day out, sometimes against all odds and cultural/social road-blocks, to make the best out of what life has to offer. I wish you ladies the best. Keep it up! Hope you enjoy the show. 🙏 Maiwand🍷
Tue, 08 Mar 2022 - 19min - 29 - Ep28. What is history and does it have a structure? (تاریخ چیست و چه شکلی دارد؟)
S1. Ep28. What is history and does it have a structure? (تاریخ چیست و چه شکلی دارد؟) This episode has two parts. Part 1 is where I share my opinion about Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Part 2 is where I go into discussing history and its structure. I consider this a pre-amble to our later discussions around the history of Afghanistan. What is history exactly? Does it have a specific structure, direction and purpose or is it totally arbitrary? 🤔 This is my humble attempt to introduce the various theories and concepts that are currently accepted as the different ways to study history. 😏 As always, please feel free to share your comments, your likes and dislikes, your opinions and critiques with me. I am more that willing to listen to any constructive feedback from any of you lovely listeners and followers of the podcast. 😉 Don't forget to spread love, understanding, kindness and compassion my friends ❤️ Maiwand🍷
Wed, 02 Mar 2022 - 31min - 28 - Ep27. What is intellectualism and who is an intellectual? (روشنفکری چیست و روشنفکر کیست؟)
S1. Ep27. What is intellectualism and who is an intellectual? (روشنفکری چیست و روشنفکر کیست؟) Who can be called an intellectual? An intellectual or 'man of letters' is a person who tries to use his or her intelligence and analytical thinking, either in their profession or for the benefit of personal pursuits. An individual who is deeply involved in abstract erudite ideas and theories. But who defines who is and who is not an intellectual? If you engage in critical thinking, research, and reflection about the reality of society, and who proposes solutions for the normative problems of society, then you too are an intellectual. Coming from the world of culture, either as a creator or as a mediator, the intellectual participates in politics, arts, social life etc either to defend a concrete proposition or to denounce an injustice, usually by either rejecting or producing or extending an ideology, and by defending a system of values. But can you still be considered an intellectual if you're possessed by ideology? I believe we are dealing with a lot of con-artists and "pseudo-intellectuals" in our communities. A pseudo-intellectual is a person who wants to be thought of as having a lot of intelligence and knowledge but who is not really intelligent or knowledgeable. In this episode I discuss the intellectual journey or lack of it in Afghanistan's history. This has caused tremendous damage and suffering. Its people are still paying for what the Afghan pseudo-intellectuals did to their country. Mostly selling off their soul in exchange for power, wealth, influence and status. A sad story. Join me. Fri, 25 Feb 2022 - 17min - 27 - Ep26. What is the meaning and purpose of life? (معنی و مفهوم زندگی چیست؟)
S1. Ep26. What is the meaning and purpose of life? (معنی و مفهوم زندگی چیست؟) Does life have any meaning? People nowadays often say – sometimes in a sad way, other times more aggressively and cynically – that ‘life just has no meaning.’ Two reasons are often cited for this. The first has to do with religion. Once upon a time, so the story goes, life had a clear meaning given to us by God: it was about worshiping Him and living according to His dictates. But as religious belief has declined, not only has god supposedly died, but along with him, the meaning he once guaranteed. Modern science is the second cause of the current crisis of meaning. Scientists tell us that existence, which emerged from a random interplay of chemicals and gases, does have meaning, but it’s of a rather bleak, relentless and narrow sort: for humans – as for all other living things (like amoeba) – the meaning of life is survival and the propagation of one’s genetic material. It sounds very true and at the same time, distinctly futile and melancholy. In this episode I want to argue as follows: to wonder about the meaning of life is an extremely important activity, life does have substantial meaning – and there are, in fact, a range of practical steps we can take to ensure we end up leading lives of maximal meaningfulness. We should start by saying that there is no meaning in life outside of that which we can find by ourselves as a species. There isn’t any kind of objective meaning written in the stars, in a holy book or in sequences of DNA. What seems to prompt people to complain that life lacks meaning are particular varieties of unhappiness. Let's find out how we can tackle these particular variaties of unhappiness :) I hope you enjoy the show. And if you do, then please don't forget to like, share, comment and subscribe! Maiwand

Tue, 08 Feb 2022 - 16min - 24 - Ep23. On freedom and its betrayal: Isaiah Berlin (آزادی و خیانت به آن: آیزایا برلین)
S1. Ep23. On freedom and its betrayal: Isaiah Berlin (آزادی و خیانت به آن: آیزایا برلین) This is an episode on freedom and its betrayal by the enemies of freedom. Let's explore together what it means to be free. What's negative and positive freedom? Can a philosopher like Isaiah Berlin help us define 'freedom'? Also, we have a brave soul on the show; a courageous human being, a woman who has now been detained by the Taliban. Let us pay attention to what these brave women are telling us; what horrors and humiliations they are going thru on daily basis. I dedicate this episode to all the brave women of this country who, by risking their lives, dare to stand up against tyranny, despotism, totalitarianism and dictatorship. I have deep respect for these dissenters and rebels. They have my full support. Please, dear listener, if you care about freedom, if you care about these voices that are actively being silenced, then share this show with everyone you know. This is our only way to fight against evil. Let us not be passive observers. This is no time to be a bystander. I thank you 🙏 Maiwand

In this episode I visit the 60's and 70's, probably one of the most interesting and vibrant periods of Afghanistan. I meet all sorts of artists, singers, poets and intellectuals who shaped the history of the country, some for the good and some for the bad. Artists like Ahmad Zahir, also known as the Elvis Presley of Afghanistan, have marked the music scene for eternity. He still has a huge following, even today among my fellow Afghans, he has a special place in people's hearts and minds, not only because he was a great singer, but also because he represented one of the most peaceful and awesome decades of this wartorn country. His generation will be remembered for ever. In addition, I also discuss 2021 and share my hopes and fears for 2022. I hope you enjoy the show. Maiwand

Mon, 08 Nov 2021 - 47min - 15 - Ep14. The World of Music – Introduction (نگاهی به دنیای موسیقی – مقدمه)
Ep14. The World of Music – Introduction (نگاهی به دنیای موسیقی) A month after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, the music is going quiet. The last time the militant group ruled the country, in the late 1990s, it outright banned music. Musicians are afraid that once again a ban will come, and some Taliban fighters on the ground have started enforcing rules on their own, harassing musicians and music venues. Many musicians have left the country or are applying for visas abroad. The Taliban’s standpoint on music as “haram” (forbidden or proscribed by Islamic law) is a historical position that dates back to a narrow circle of Islamic legalist elites in the 14th century centred around Ibn Taymiyyah, one of Islam’s most forceful theologians. However, Afghanistan has a strong musical tradition, influenced by Iranian and Indian classical music. It also has a thriving pop music scene, adding electronic instruments and dance beats to more traditional rhythms. Both have flourished in the past 20 years. Therefore, in order to keep the spirit of music alive, I have decided to make series of podcasts on the topic of music. We will dive into the beautiful world of music, its history and roots in various human civilisations. We shall have philosophical, sociological, psychological and artistic look at what music actual is and how it has affected our lives thru time. We shall take a look at the history of music in Afghanistan and introduce various musical instruments. Musicians, singers, artists of various walks of life shall be introduced. This is going to be an awesome journey! Join me as I explore the sublime world of music. Maiwand
Thu, 21 Oct 2021 - 24min - 14 - Ep13. A new look at the Orwellian nightmare (نگاهی جدید به کابوس اورولی)
George Orwell's 1984 is probably one of the most studied novels of the last century. Join me as I discuss Orwell, his legacy and what 1984 can teach us today. In this episode, I shall try to re-interpret the novel and see if it can help us understand our contemporary world, especially in regard to what's taking place in Afghanistan. I believe we need to look at the main opposition in the world right now which is in the Jihadist view; a view against western values, ideals and forms of government. This is my tribute to Orwell and the people of Afghanistan who have suffered under different totalitarian regimes, from Communism to Islamism and Jihadism. I hope you enjoy the show. Maiwand
Tue, 28 Sep 2021 - 38min - 13 - Ep12. The tragic story of my native country (داستان غم انگیز سرزمین مادری من)
Friends, This episode is in English. Therefore, if you are a non-Dari/Farsi speaker then this show is also for you. In fact, I did this in English specifically for this reason, so our non-Afghan friends who are not familiar with the language can also tune in and hear the stories. It has been quite a difficult week for me. Like so many people I've watched Afghanistan fall to the forces of darkness also know as the Taliban over the past few days in horror and sadness. Though, I've lived outside of Afghanistan since 1993, I was born in Kabul and have my historical and cultural roots there. I am frustrated to see this country and its people in pain and agony once again in my own life-time. For the last 40 years or so, Afghanistan has unfortunately mainly been on the news in the context of death and destruction. Here we are once again. Taliban has taken over almost all of Afghanistan and has imposed or about to impose the full Sharia law. We are back at square one. The gains of the last 20 years will soon be reversed, no doubt. Chopping off limbs, public floggings, hangings, killing gays & minorities, terrorizing girls & women, covering them in bags by force etc..all of this is coming. A new dawn of religious fanaticism is upon Afghanistan. Strict Islamic laws are soon to be implemented across the country. A theocracy in the making. The world allowed this to happen. We allowed this to happen. It’s now on all of us. Once again, Afghanistan will be transformed into the perfect breeding ground for terrorism..soon thousands of Taliban brethren from across the world will join them and plan their attacks from Afghan soil. History repeats itself. Quite literally. My stance: I say NO to Talibanism. I say NO to barbarism. I say NO to terrorism. I say NO to Sharia. This is my story and the story of my native country. I hope you enjoy the show. Thank you for your support. Spread the word! Thank you. Maiwand
Sun, 22 Aug 2021 - 25min - 12 - Ep11. When is one ready to get married? (چه زمانی آماده ازدواج هستیم؟)
When is one ready to get married? It used to be when we'd hit certain financial milestones, but under influence of Romantic philosophy, this seemed to be like calculating. Therefore, the focus shifted to emotions. The sign of a good union was feeling the right way. In this episode I discuss and claim this ideology of Romantic love to be a perfect recipe for disaster and dissolution of marriages. It has caused trouble in the emotional lives of millions of couples. I hope you enjoy the show. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel on Spotify. This way you will never miss a show ;) Maiwand
Fri, 13 Aug 2021 - 23min - 11 - Ep10. Why do we lie? (چرا دروغ می گوییم؟)
Ep10. Why do we lie? (چرا دروغ می گوییم؟) What is a lie? What is a 'white' lie? Honestly may be the best policy but it seems like dishonesty is part of what makes us human. The history of mankind is strewn with crafty liars. People have been spinning lies and deceptions gain unjust rewards. Some are politicians who lie to come to power or cling to it. Remember president Clinton lying to the American people about his affair with Monica Lewinsky? Sometimes people lie to inflate their image. People lie to cover up bad behaviour. Lying, it turns out, is something that most of us are very adept at. We lie with ease, in ways big and small, to strangers, co-workers, friends, and loved ones. Our capacity for dishonesty is as fundamental to us as our need to trust others, which ironically makes us terrible at detecting lies. Being deceitful is woven into our very fabric, so much so that it would be truthful to say that to lie is human. In this episode I explore why we lie and how it affects us and our societies. I hope you enjoy the show. Please do not forget to like and share the podcast with friends and family. This is how we reach a wider audience and hopefully will have a positive impact in the world. Thank you! Maiwand
Sat, 31 Jul 2021 - 36min - 10 - Ep9. Ghazal: A Brief History (غزل: تاریخچه مختصر)
Ep9. Ghazal: A Brief History (غزل: تاریخچه مختصر) Ghazal in Arabic and Persian refers to a small, graceful, swift antelope with long ringed horns. The beautiful, melting eyes of the antelope are compared to the eyes of a beautiful woman. There is something mystical, magical and tragic about the Ghazal. The Ghazal as a genre is derived from the Arabic qasidah (ode). It originates in 'taghazzul', the opening verses of the qasidah in which the poet talks about the female lover. Eventually the ghazal got separated and became a poem of its own. The theme of love in the ghazal evolved and expanded to encompass a spectrum from mystical to mundane. Ideas and ideals of love and beauty pervade the ghazal; beauty of the soul and the body. It makes use of analogies - the rose, cypress, dove, bulbul and many more, to explore depths of emotion. In this episode I discuss the ghazal in all its facets. I try to give a brief history, from its birth to its journeys throat the world. How different places has shaped and reshaped it and how in return the ghazal has had a profound effect on its host countries. I hope you enjoy the show :) Maiwand
Sun, 11 Jul 2021 - 48min - 9 - Ep8. On Coming Out (بيرون آمدن از خفا)
Ep8. On Coming Out (بيرون آمدن از خفا) In this episode I am discussing Pride, LGBT community, the differences between homosexuality and pedophilia and the story of Aarezo who was stoned to death in her village because of her sexual orientation and her love for Aabeda. Jaad-e Maiwand stands with the LGBT community. I hope to see, perhaps in my own life-time, Pride celebrations across Afghanistan, from Kabul to Kandahar, from Herat to Balkh! Hope you enjoy the show. Please do not forget to like and share the podcast with friends and family. It's important to reach as many minds as possible. Mind-sets are not changed by force. They are changed by love, dedication, understanding, rational arguments, mutual respect and hugs, lots of hugs. Thank you! Maiwand
Sat, 26 Jun 2021 - 32min - 8 - Ep7. On Animal Liberation (آزادی حیوانات)
Ep7. On Animal Liberation (آزادی حیوانات) In this episode I discuss animal rights and industrial farming and how vegetarianism and veganism can help us put an end to animal cruelty. Farm animals have suffered for eons. I believe we can do better. In fact, we should do better. Humans can be a force for good in the world. My fellow Afghans need to realise that they do have a choice. Eating animal flesh is a choice. However, by eating meat we do support the cruel farming system that is exploiting billions of animals. Nowadays we have beautiful alternatives that can help us get rid of our toxic behaviours that is causing so much suffering in the world, both to animals and non-animals alike. We do not own the Earth. We are temporary guests on this beautiful planet of ours. Living consciously and responsibly may give the generations after us also the chance to enjoy their short stay on this amazing blue planet. I hope you enjoy the show. Sun, 30 May 2021 - 29min - 6 - Ep5. The Tragedy of the Middle East: Israeli-Palestinian conflict (تراژدی خاورمیانه)
Ep5. The Tragedy of the Middle East: Israeli-Palestinian conflict (تراژدی خاورمیانه) In this episode I am discussing the latest Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Be assured, I am not claiming to have solved this never-ending tragedy. However, I am hoping to have succeeded in eliminating some of the lies and deceptions about this complicated issue. Truth is never black and white. It is always something in-between. There are a lot of grey-zones. Although, there certainly are claims and opinions that have nothing to do with the facts on the ground. We, the adults in the room, should be able to distinguish between those facts and propaganda. This episode is an attempt to do exactly that. I hope you enjoy the show :)

Ep4. In conversation with Socrates about freedom of expression (آزادی بیان) In this week's episode I will be discussing the principal of freedom of expression with one of my favourite philosophers, namely Socrates. Join me as we explore his teachings and wisdom on this important topic. He gave his life for what he believed to be true. Are we courageous enough to do the same and defend the one freedom that as I believe is the foundation of every other freedom we can think of? I hope you enjoy the show.

Ep2. Rat No. 34 (موش شماره 34) In this episode I am going to discuss addiction, especially behavioural addictions and obsessions that are controlling our lives. If you can’t stop checking, clicking, surfing, and liking, chances are you too are addicted to your phone, social media and other technologies that are consuming endless hours of our lives. In this episode I will take a deep dive into our online existence in the hope to understand how powerful technologies (e.g. social media platforms) are influencing our behaviours and if there are better ways to interact with them without harming ourselves and the people around us.
