This episode from Khartoum Podcast discusses the relationship of art with politics by reflecting on the art movements that developed in post-colonial Sudan to the state of art and artists today after the December revolution. We discuss how this complex relationship to authority has been at times a vehicle for art production and at other times has undermined the freedom and space for art in Sudan.

د.زين حيدر عبيد, تخرجت من كلية الجغرافيا بجامعة دمشق و قامت بعمل بحث دبلوم في التخطيط العمراني في قسم الإنمائية بجامعة الخرطوم عن" تجربة إزالة سوق الخرطوم القديم" في حلقتنا الثانية من بودكاست عن مكان تحكي لنا د. زين عن السوق المركزي القديم الذي شيد عام 1903 م ليفي بأغراض التبادل السلعي المرتبط بحياة الناس اليومية و قد لعب دورا كبيرا في استيعاب إنتاج مختلف المناطق الزراعية بالخرطوم، تحدثنا ايضاً عن مساوئ ومحاسن السوق القديم وتبعات قرار إزالته وعن ذكريات طفولتها في السوق القديم حيث كانت تحضر مع والدها لشراء مستلزمات العائلة.

Dr. Zain Haider Obaid graduated from the Faculty of Geography at Damascus University and conducted a study as part of a diploma in urban planning in the Department of Development at the University of Khartoum on “The Experience of Removing the Old Khartoum Market.” In her interview with us, Dr. Zain tells us about the old Khartoum Market, which was built in 1903 to cater to the needs of city residents. In the past, the market played an important role in distributing the state's agricultural products. In addition, Dr. Zain discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the old market and the consequences of its removal. She also recalls her childhood memories in the old market, where she came with her father to buy family supplies.

As part of our interest in “Documenting Spatial Narratives” in Khartoum. We spoke with a diverse group of Khartoum residents, each sharing their memories and insights about Khartoum's famous places. About a Space podcast is a sub-series to Khartoum Podcast.

Atine, An iconic square in Khartoum, Known for hosting Mafroosh between 2012 and 2015. Mafroosh is a cultural and social event for selling and exchanging books, accompanied by small musical events. As part of our interest in “Documenting Spatial Narratives” in Khartoum. We interviewed Mohammed Abouelila, a member of Abu El-Ela family that owns the Abu El-Ela commercial building. Abouelila walks us through the history of Atine, the nature of activities held in the space, and how it has changed through time.

This episode presents an overview of public spaces in Khartoum city from its riverfronts, open spaces, to ‘Almasateb’ on the street scale. Through this cross-scalar exploration of the city, we discuss the various influencers that led to the loss of significant public spaces and played a role in their historical erasure, particularly those that have witnessed momentous events that shaped the collective memory of Khartoum and its residents throughout the past century.
In the midst of the state and people’s conflicts surrounding the right to public space, we highlight the role of policies and planning laws in the encroachment on Khartoum’s public spaces, which in turn, have become arenas for state censorship and violence.

Diese Folge präsentiert einen Überblick über die öffentlichen Räume der Stadt Khartum, von den Flussufern über Freiflächen bis hin zu "Almasateb" an der Straßenrändern. Deathscapes - مساحات الموت

كيف يرتبط الموت بالمكان؟ 
وما الذي يمكن اعتباره "مساحة" للموت؟

في هذه الحلقة نستكشف علاقة الخرطوم بالموت، سواء كان ذلك عبر أماكن الدفن أو أماكن تخليد الذكرى، وننظر كيف تلعب مساحات الموت دورها كأرشيف مادي لديه المقدرة على الحفاظ على تاريخ المدينة. ستسمح لنا هذه الرحلة باستكشاف تاريخ قباب أولياء الصوفية وعلاقتهم بالمشهد الاجتماعي والسياسي، وتاريخ المقابر في الخرطوم وأخيراً الآثار والنصب التذكارية والتوترات المحيطة بالتذكارات في السودان.

نناقش كيف تتقاطع مساحات الموت تلك أحيانًا مع الأماكن الحية وتصبح مواقع متنازع عليها نسبة لترابطها بالعلاقات الاجتماعية والسياسية الموجودة في المدينة.

How does death relate to space?
What can be considered as a “space” of death?

In this episode, we explore the relationship of Khartoum with death, whether it be through places of burial or places of memorialization and we consider how spaces of death can act as physical archives that have the ability to preserve the history of the city. This journey will allow us to explore the history of qubbas of Sufi saints and their relationship to the city’s socio-political landscape, the historic cemeteries in Khartoum and finally monuments and memorials and the tensions surrounding memorialization in Sudan.

We discuss how these “deathscapes” have intersected with spaces of the living and become contested sites where the socio-political relations in the city play out.

This episode gives an overview of the alternative music scene in Khartoum within the past 60 years by discussing the diverse influences leading to the emergence and development of Jazz, Zannig, and Rap musical genres in the city. We review the intersections of some of these genres with social class and politics in Khartoum and how they’ve become cultural products that were minimally represented and were not allowed to be fully legitimized by official media channels and institutions, thus they’ve historically been marginalized.

Interviewed in this episode are some of Sudan’s pioneer artists in Jazz and Zannig and through their stories, we discuss the cultural ‘otherization’ and social stigma imposed by the dominant elites against these genres. Despite these circumstances, we explore the process through which Jazz, Zannig, and Rap have become a part of the mainstream music scene in Sudan by utilizing alternative platforms such as the internet and social media.

Through this podcast, we invite Sudan’s youth to participate in the documentation and support of alternative music by any means possible.

تشتهر أمدرمان بصورتها كعاصمة وطنية، وكسودان مصغر، وهي صورة مرتبطة بتاريخ طويل من الحركة الثقافية والاجتماعية والسياسية المتجذرة في المدينة. صورة أمدرمان هي محور هذه الحلقة، فكيف تشكلت هذه الصورة؟ وهل هي متخيلة أم حقيقية؟

نناقش البدايات المبكرة لأم درمان خلال الدولة المهدية وكيف خطط الخليفة المدينة كعاصمة له من خلال النظر في العوامل الاجتماعية والسياسية التي أثرت على تشكل المدينة. مع صعود الاستعمار الإنجليزي المصري، انتقل مقر السلطة إلى الخرطوم، مما سمح لأمدرمان بدخول عصر جديد عرف بإنتاجه الاجتماعي والثقافي والسياسي الذي بلغ ذروته في الحركة الوطنية.

منذ الاستقلال، أثرت موجات الهجرة المتعددة وكذلك النزوح إلى المدينة على تلك الهوية الثقافية وأصبحت بمثابة تحد لها. ففي هذه الحلقة نناقش كيف تؤثر هذه التطورات الأخيرة على صورة وهوية المدينة ككل.

Omdurman is known for its image as the national capital, Sudan’s microcosm, an image that is associated with a long history of cultural, social and political movement rooted in the city. The image of Omdurman is the central topic of this episode, how did this image come to be formed? And is it imagined or real?

We discuss Omdurman’s early beginnings during the Mahadist state and how AlKhalifa planned the city as his capital by looking at the socio-political factors that influenced shaping the city. With the rise of the Condominium rule, the seat of power shifted to Khartoum, allowing Omdurman to enter a new era known for its social, cultural and political production that culminated in the national movement.

Since independence, the multiple waves of migrations as well as displacement to the city has impacted and challenged its cultural identity. We discuss how these recent developments affect the image and identity of the city as a whole.

Prof. Idris Salim ElHassan is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the International University of Africa. He has previously worked as an associate professor at the University of Khartoum at the Department of Anthropology for more than 25 years at which he then became the Dean for University Projects for Community Development as well as the Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Technological and Developmental Studies.

البروفيسور إدريس سالم الحسن، عميد كلية الآداب بجامعة أفريقيا العالمية، والأستاذ سابقاً بجامعة الخرطوم بقسم الاجتماع لما يزيد عن خمسة و عشرين عاماً بها اصبح عميداً لكلية الدراسات التقنية و التنمية ثم عميداً لمشروعات الجامعة.

Prof. Munzoul Assal, is a professor of Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies, Dept. of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the University of Khartoum. He was previously the Director of the Graduates Affairs Administration and the Peace Research Institute at the University of Khartoum.

Khartoum Podcast is a series of episodes that explore the city of Khartoum and different social, cultural, and political aspects through the lenses of specialists, urbanists, artists, and other inhabitants of the city. The podcast discusses the relationship between people, culture and history to get a better understanding of how the city is continuously being shaped on the everyday.

This podcast was produced by The Urban Episode, a research studio focusing on the city and urban topics, for Sudan Moves, a project initiated and funded by Goethe-Institut Sudan. The Podcast is recorded in Arabic and German.

Each episode will be accompanied by an essay in both Arabic and English citing all references used in the podcast. Stay tuned for six episodes covering a new topic every week, coming soon to all Sudan Moves platforms.
