Thu, 8 Jun 2023 - 1h 11min - 11 - Introducing the Odisea Podcast
An odisea or odyssey in English, is a long intellectual or spiritual quest. Our quest is one that is defined by leveraging decentralised and distributed systems to build better coordination substrates that unlock unbound human and environmental flourishing, towards infinite gardens. Odisea is a 10-part research and podcast series where we will be exploring crypto’s opportunity to deliver more infinite, equitable and self-sovereign futures. Together on this journey, we will be speaking and learning from some of the pioneers in the ecosystem - ranging from those building at the forefront of decentralised social to onboard the masses, decentralised finance to remove unnecessary rent-seeking intermediaries, wallets looking to build more seamless user experiences, individuals building the frontier of network states, and many other amazing guests! The notion of infinite gardens originates from the Ethereum Foundation’s vision for Ethereum. If we take life as the game that many of us perceive it to be, we can either choose to play finite or infinite games. In his book, Finite and Infinite Games, James P. Carse explores how infinite games are those where we seek to collaborate towards mutually-beneficial outcomes, where we celebrate our authentic diverse relationships, and seek to continue playing the game of life infinitely. Infinite gardens therefore, are diverse and thriving visions for what the outcomes of better human coordinations games could look like. This body of work is a continuation of the work I created while conducting research and report on DeFi’s opportunity to drive more financial freedom and inclusion in Latin America. The aim of Odisea is continue this momentum and create a community of builders and innovators who believe in leveraging technological and cultural innovation to steward the (r)evolution of humanity. Odisea will be a home for the seekers who aim to find their co-conspirators along our quest to deliver on crypto’s promise of creating a better future. Thu, 1 Jun 2023 - 02min - 10 - Last Mile DeFi 09: Construyendo la adopción de crypto con Manuel Beaudroit
¡Hola familia de Last Mile DeFi! Hey there Last Mile DeFi frens, this conversation is with Camila Rioja the Latin American Lead at Celo. In her role, Camila or “Mila” as some know her as, leads the ecosystem development of Celo in the region. This conversation was a fascinating exploration into Mila’s journey, her thesis on why Latin America has much to gain from crypto, and how Celo founders are developing solutions to bring prosperity to LatAm. Throughout this conversation we explore her journey into the crypto ecosystem coming from a legal background, which set an insatiable curiosity to explore the deep questions regarding how society is structured and how we could develop solutions at the intersection of law and technology to bring better futures for all. We explore how and why Mila decided to leave her role as Partner at a law firm and venture towards the Celo ecosystem, where she found a community of builders who were naturally drawn towards unlocking prosperity for disenfranchised communities in the global south. Mila walks us through the unique value-add that Celo is bringing to the table when it comes to onboarding the masses, their approach to a mobile-first development, as well as the environmental regeneration that is embedded within Celo’s operations. Mila shared her thesis on the Latin American region, where she sees a high willingness to adopt technological innovation and what she describes a “hacker” mindset that is born from resilience contrasted against our historical backdrop. Coupled with our openness and curiosity to explore other forms of seeing our lives, she sees Latin America as a fertile ground to build better systems that are powered by crypto and enable more equitable societies. In this conversation, we also highlight some of the builders within the Celo community and how Mila approaches building an ecosystem throughout the Latin American region.
Tue, 11 Apr 2023 - 1h 03min - 7 - Last Mile DeFi 06: Innovating for inclusion with Valora Wallet CEO Jackie Bona
Hola Last Mile DeFi familia, this podcast is with the CEO of Valora, Jackie Bona. This podcast covers Jackie’s journey towards developing the mobile-only Valora wallet, how they focus on building with localization in mind, her thesis on the role wallets will play in our digital lives, and so much more. In this conversation, Jackie shares her professional journey coming from Google, Twitter, and Spotify, where she learned the importance of building products that provide a seamless and elegant user experience. As she pivoted towards working in crypto, Jackie discusses what drew her towards the Celo ecosystem and how through field-testing in refugee camps and in rural Latin America, the Valora wallet came to be. Derived from the Esperanto word for “value,” Valora’s thesis on providing financial services with an approach that is highly localized to each of the regions where they operate. To date, Valora is present in over 100 countries, and available in thirteen different languages. The localization that Valora emphasizes is paying off - Jackie shared a couple of examples where Valora has empowered disenfranchised people in Latin America to access better financing. Throughout the conversation, Jackie and I discussed some of the challenges when it comes to leveraging wallets as drivers of mass adoption in Latin America. Primarily, the solution lies around providing tangible and practical utility for end-users which is more than just storing value, but also exchanging goods and services in the real world, delivering unconditional basic income, earning an interest on your assets, and beyond. The key barrier we discussed in the podcast is the friction with regards to on/off-ramping challenge that broadly exists in the wider crypto ecosystem, as well as some solutions that are looking to provide more access to easy conversion of crypto to fiat. I’m a firm believer that wallets are they entry point to onboard the masses, and believe that Valora is one of the wallets that will continue to drive more adoption throughout the region. You can connect with Jackie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jackie_bona and Valora: https://twitter.com/Valora To stay up to date with the latest findings, you can follow along on Twitter (https://twitter.com/marcusdotam) and Lens (https://lenster.xyz/u/marcus) as well. Thu, 6 Apr 2023 - 53min - 6 - Last Mile DeFi 05: Crypto-powered opportunities with James Downer
Hola Last Mile DeFi familia, in this conversation, James laid down the background to the work he is doing with Venezuelan migrants in Colombia as a consequence of the political instability and historical inflation that has affected the country. James has had circular career entering the ecosystem, when back in 2014 he came across Bitcoin being used in Argentina to overcome the cash controls in the country at the time. Since then, James has explored the various ways in which crypto could be leveraged to provide more opportunities for Latin Americans. Today, James works on Roda - a project that aims to provide people who are unable to access traditional financial services in Colombia with alternative routes to access financing. Roda works with delivery drivers to offer them micro-loans that eventually give them the opportunity to access higher ticket size loans that give these drivers the opportunity to access loans to purchase motorized bicycles. With the powered bicycles, delivery drivers are immediately able to double their monthly income, drastically improving their livelihoods. Today, Roda has issued over 8,000 individual loans to over 5,000 individual clients throughout Colombia. Through this conversation, we discuss a future where we can rely on crypto infrastructure to provide better financial services that allow people to verify the extent to which they are reputable actors within an economy, particularly if they are interacting with the informal economy. Roda relies heavily on the social collateral within their ecosystem, which crypto could provide a formal way for the borrowers in their network to formally verify their reputation with any actor, without having to rely on traditional instruments which often do not recognize people’s social capital. James’ work is a testament of the outcomes of grassroots entrepreneurship paired with technological innovation and I look forward to seeing Roda continue to leverage crypto to best provide access to undercollateralized loans in Colombia and beyond! Thu, 30 Mar 2023 - 1h 06min - 4 - Last Mile DeFi 03: Education as a catalyzer of mass adoption with Camila Ramos
Born in Colombia, and brought up in California, Cami’s (https://twitter.com/camiinthisthang) journey towards becoming a developer began at an early age when she took an hour-long coding course in high school. At the same time, she also saw the inequity in accessing computer science education for black and latino students at her high school. This then kicked off her journey towards unlocking more educational opportunities for underrepresented communities through her writing and content she produces. Cami’s north star is led by bringing crypto to those who need it most, particularly those in the global south. She sees an opportunity for crypto to provide enhanced financial infrastructure and drive more prosperity for Latin Americans, rather than seemingly futile applications that often times get a lot of attention in mainstream crypto that don’t provide practical use-cases for whose who have most to benefit most from crypto - points she discusses in her piece “The Deadend of Eurocentric Crypto”. This year Cami is focused on not only researching where crypto’s key intervention points lie, but also working towards building and implementing real solutions that drastically enhance people’s lives. We also explored what real world adoption Cami has seen to date in Latin America and why she believes particular use-cases have taken off in the region and what we can do to nurture more adoption through creating better-designed user flows. One of the most interesting points of conversation is where we explore the questions around whether it is the job of incumbent crypto players to expand into the LatAm region or whether we could see more home-grown projects emerge locally.
Thu, 23 Mar 2023 - 52min - 2 - Last Mile DeFi 01: DeFi's opportunity to empower disenfranchised communities with Nico Gallardo
In this episode of the podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nico Gallardo, a builder in the crypto ecosystem who shared his experiences coming from Bolivia, where crypto interaction is forbidden. We explored the similarities between Bolivia and Guatemala in terms of their governmental, economic, and geographic backgrounds, as well as the lack of financial infrastructure in rural areas. During our conversation, Nico shared his journey towards becoming a builder in the crypto space and his thoughts on Bolivia's decision to prohibit crypto interaction. We delved into how people in Bolivia are currently using crypto and what the future of crypto looks like in the region. We also discussed the importance of building organic communities and the role that Eth Kipu, a post-Devcon community of communities across Latin America, plays in this process. Nico also shared his thesis on how crypto is particularly well-suited to address the massive financial challenges that exist on the continent and the key role that decentralized social plays in onboarding the next billion people into the crypto ecosystem. Although the audio and video quality of the live recording wasn't as high fidelity as we would have liked, I believe that this conversation is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of Latin American builders.
