This Pearl Jam podcast revisits the best live shows in their 30+ year history. From breaking down every setlist to telling the stories from every era, we provide comprehensive insight into the history of one of the best live bands to ever do it. But most of all, we're here to preserve the memories from your favorite shows that you've attended.
- 375 - Episode 306: Columbia, MD - 9/18/1998
You may not recognize this show by name, but Columbia, Maryland 1998 is a pivotal show in Pearl Jam history due to one moment that was immortalized on a record title Live On Two Legs (yes, it does feel weird to say that sometimes). This is the first instance that a little improv was introduced prior to the performance of MFC that to this day is known to the Pearl Jam Faithfull as Untitled. This episode spends a significant portion of time focusing on the impact that this song has made over time, it's importance to fans when hearing it on the live album, the meaning of the lyrics at the time of performance and how it ties in to another improv from an earlier era. While Untitled dominates conversation here, there are plenty of topics that will focus on other stellar performances from this set. Hail, Hail opens this show for the fourth and final time to date and we'll discuss the dynamic of it kicking off a night. Immortality, State Of Love And Trust, Mankind, Alive, Black and Last Kiss will also big highlights from this show. And what does Charlie Sheen and Chevy Chase have to do with this episode that we'll need an extended conversation on? Joining us for this episode is our Patron, Sheehan Perera (IG: @concertpants) who will share his great stories about this being his first show and celebrating it with his friends he grew up with in Malaysia. Also, the Gear Guru chimes in during this version of Do The Evolution to break down how Stone is creating a "washing" sound during the solo. Sat, 12 Oct 2024 - 1h 36min - 374 - Episode 305: Buenos Aires, ARG - 11/13/2011
¡Ole Ole Ole Ole! This week we're digging into one of the best places to see a Pearl Jam concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina! We all know those South American shows are special whether it be in Brazil, Chile or Peru, but there is something about the Argentinian crowd that makes your hair stand on end. The passion for the band mixed with their natural knack for singing along with the melodies of songs, even singing songs of their own when the band takes a minute to breathe, makes this one of the must see Pearl Jam crowds in the world. Javier was lucky enough to be in attendance for this one in 2011, so we'll get the scope of what it was like to be a part of that audience. There's a cliche used on the show sometimes where we say "you're only as good as your last bootleg" which means that when fans get their hands on boots from the most recent tour year and hear how it went down, the next time the band comes around to their town, they want to be a part of that. This show in 2011 is the show that everyone went home and listened to, waited for two years in 2013 and absolutely turned the dial on to make that (in my personal opinion) the best Pearl Jam crowd of all time. This crowd sings along with just about everything from Release to Even Flow to Jeremy, Black, Better Man, and hell, even Last Kiss. But as you'll see with a song like Do The Evolution which is widely known for it's South American renditions, it wasn't quite the moment that we know of it to be now. We'll get into the possible reasons why, and how that continued to grow throughout their future runs down there. We'll have fun raving about this crowd, but we'll also discuss whether or not the band should have been more involved with their celebrations, again as they would do in future years. Also! An old segment is back by popular demand, so don't miss it! Wed, 09 Oct 2024 - 1h 43min - 373 - Episode 304: Atlantic City, NJ - 10/1/2005
We're picking up where we left off last week as this episode focuses on night two of the two show run from Pearl Jam's shows in Atlantic City in 2005. High octane performances, an intimate crowd and a Bruce Springsteen cover happen in night one, but what could possibly top that? A song debut from an unreleased album, Stone Gossard grabbing the mic and an appearance from a spaceman? Those three things could help the cause. The band kicked off this show with a dynamite version of Present Tense and from there it just kept getting better and better. Immortality impacts the crowd with an intense ending, Not For You has a fun new section improved, they let Stone sing even though the crowd wanted to drop the Leash and we get the live debut of Avocado track Gone seven months before the album came out. We will spend a lengthy amount of time on the debut due to it's uniqueness in the catalog. The song was written that weekend in Ed's hotel room and featured no other band member's accompanyment. So how was it able to be as impactful as it was considering the elements? You'll find out in the show! Also, we see a rock legend join up with the band for Rockin' In The Free World here, and since we have finished up the North American run of our tour, we'll spend some time discussing some of the OTOTOs played at Ohana Festival. While we give Whale Song some love here, the episode was recorded before the band broke out Gremmie Out Of Control on night two. So perhaps you'll hear a voice talk about it real quick at a very opportune time! Wed, 02 Oct 2024 - 1h 38min - 372 - Episode 303: Atlantic City, NJ - 9/30/2005
This episode begins a two-part series where we dig into the shows at the Borgata in Atlantic City from 2005. These shows were unique for the band because of the small venue size holding a little over 2,500 people, but also due to the general admission area which was something that they had not done very often since the Roskilde tragedy in 2000. After a year of touring in Canada and testing out new songs and setlists on the road, this show has it's fair share of surprises and rarities for the time. Recently we saw Porch get played as the second song in Wrigley Field, and we'll get to talk about that when it comes to this show. Songs like Sad, Low Light and Man Of The Hour are in their early infancy, so we'll chat about how those songs were continuing to evolve at the time into the big performances that we're familiar with today. We'll dive into excellent versions of Save You, Crazy Mary and Rearviewmirror as well. Javier joins in on this episode and will talk about some of the different things you're hearing at these shows including Cameron playing with an open snare and Mike's guitar featured behind in the mix. And we'll talk about our favorite performances of Dark Matter songs from this tour! Wed, 25 Sep 2024 - 1h 35min - 371 - Episode 302: Calgary, AB - 9/21/2011
When proposing an episode for this week's show, the goal was to put focus on a tour that we haven't discussed a whole lot on this podcast - the 2011 Canadian tour. The question here was which show would be the one to cover. So we crowd sourced it and got some great answers, but the best answer was a suggestion to do the episode in tribute of former Calgary Flames star, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were tragically killed recently. This made the Calgary 2011 show a no brainer to talk about. There is a big storyline that looms over this show. This happened to be the same day that R.E.M. called it a career. Hearing the band react to the news and play a very impassioned touching tribute to them with the song It Happened Today has been the consensus call back moment from this show. Pearl Jam could have made a decision to play one of their more well known radio singles like Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts or Man On The Moon, but we'll talk about how they selected the right song for the right moment. There are also songs in this setlist that connect to something that the band has done recently such as Brain Of J, Rats, Crazy Mary and even something relevant in concerns to Johnny Guitar! Wed, 18 Sep 2024 - 1h 29min - 370 - Episode 301: Baltimore, MD - 10/27/2013
The 2024 tour keeps rolling forward for the next week with our next stop in Baltimore, Maryland. Four years ago, the plan was to return to Baltimore before Covid happened, and then when it came time to reschedule the tour, the arena was under construction. So now they return for the first time in eleven years, which happens to be the only time they've played Baltimore as of this writing. This episode will feature the 2013 show, a show which is centrally focused on the loss of a music industry titan, Lou Reed. The band set the mood from the early going here as the local crowd would get a show that features songs they were hoping to hear along with a little bit of the unexpected. The idea of the setlist and lyrical content can certainly be traced to how they were handling the recently announced death of the Velvet Underground front man. Songs like Hard To Imagine and Given To Fly can be considered choices that reflect this, plus an inclusion of Take A Walk On The Wild Side as a Daughter tag, and more direct dedications like Man Of The Hour and a cover of Waiting For The Man. We'll also get into a little bit of a mystery as to what happened to Jeff at the end of this show, and a yellow shirt guy that had the time of his life. Keep in mind that this episode was recorded prior to the Philadelphia shows, so any conversation that you're begging to hear on Brain Of J will have to either wait for next week or is available to our on our Patreon reaction episode. We will however talk about MSG night 2 and how incredible that night was, plus a rating on how well Randy sang It's The End Of The World As We Know It on karaoke! Wed, 11 Sep 2024 - 1h 38min - 369 - Episode 300: Madison Square Garden - 9/11/2022
Welcome to Live On 4 Legs' officially unofficial 300th podcast episode! The timing worked out perfectly on this because in order to hit a milestone, you have to do something special. It just so happens that the band is in Madison Square Garden this week, and that's a pretty special venue to go back to. Since we covered every Garden show from 1998-2016 back in 2019, the only one left to do was from two years ago on the Gigaton tour. The show took place on the 21st anniversary of 9/11, which you couldn't have asked for a more important stage and city to play on. The weight of the tragedy was on everyone's minds and many of the song choices were picked to reflect the emotion that this date naturally brings. Songs like Release, Come Back and Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns were just a few that captured the moment of what that night was. We'll get into some emotional Ed's speeches where he hares stories from first responders and calls for unity in America. Also, Randy happened to be at this show and had a very lofty goal he was looking to accomplish to bring back a former Garden moment from their history. He'll gush over his favorite performances such as Present Tense, Porch, Sonic Reducer and how Rockin' In The Free World almost made him need a hearing aid. Wed, 04 Sep 2024 - 1h 45min - 368 - Episode 299: House Of Blues, Chicago, IL - 10/5/2005
As Pearl Jam is preparing for another memorable weekend at Wrigley Field this week, we were put in a somewhat difficult spot as to what we should cover to get you guys excited for the show. The dilemma was that we had already covered all five Wrigley shows back in the summer of 2020, so what would we do? Well, there's a little show that took place in Chicago in 2005 that doesn't get discussed as much as it should. To raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief funds, Robert Plant and Pearl Jam combined forces to create an out of this world all-star show. Our friend Jason Brown was lucky enough to be there that night, and he'll join us to tell the stories of how it all went down. To get into this show that took place in an intimate venue that has a capacity of less than 2,000, you had to make a $1,000 donation in order to get in. Jason made that donation, but you'll want to hear the wild story of how it happened. As legendary Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant and his band The Strange Sensation opened up the night, the place was abuzz of whether the two rock 'n' roll titans would combine forces. Lo and behold, they did! The set they played with Plant was pretty remarkable, a combination of Given To Fly and Going To California as a wink wink to the song's influence kicked things off, followed by a few standard 1960s songs such as Little Sister and Money (That's What I Want). And then the band truly breaks out the Zeppelin heavy hitters - Fool In The Rain and Thank You. We'll have a very interesting discussion on Fool In The Rain featuring facts that may surprise you. The Gear Guru also joins us for this show and while we spend some time talking Zeppelin with him, we'll dig into Save You, Porch and Rearviewmirror that may or may not have sounded like other Pearl Jam songs. Wed, 28 Aug 2024 - 1h 54min - 367 - Episode 298: Indianapolis, IN - 5/7/2010
With the new tour firing up this week in Montana, on Monday Pearl Jam will be heading to Indianapolis to take care of some unfinished business. Last year was set to be the band's first appearance in the city in 13 years until illness took over and caused a postponement. As they make good on their promise to return, this episode covers the last instance where they visited Indiana's capital back in 2010. We'll get you hyped up for the return of the tour and answer some of the questions that you guys posed to us via social media! With a new show on the horizon, is it fair to say that Indianapolis doesn't have a Pearl Jam show that's considered an all-timer? While neighboring places like Detroit, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Milwaukee have all laid claim to have hosted shows that people hold in very high regard, this year may be Indianapolis's year. 2010 is not by any means a bad show, but does it stand out among a very good slate from that US run that year? With the conditions not going the way of a typical concert, marred with a 90 minute delay due to thunderstorms, the band came out and played a very efficient set that took two hours and ten minutes to play an impressive 29 songs. Most of these songs are of the shorter, pop-rock variety to keep the mood of what may have been an anxious crowd after a rain delay lighthearted and fun. The positive outlook of the Backspacer era tunes helped that cause with songs like Unthought Known and Supersonic flourishing in this spotlight. We'll spend our time talking about some big moments that include a fantastic rendition of Off He Goes, Force Of Nature, Wishlist and a nod to hometown heroes, the Jackson 5. Wed, 21 Aug 2024 - 1h 31min - 366 - Episode 297: Missoula, MT - 2/8/1995
We're getting you prepped up for Pearl Jam's second North American leg of the Dark Matter tour by once again featuring shows in the locations that they'll be playing. First up is a hometown show for Mr. Jeff Ament as we cover the Missoula show from 1995. This is the beginning of the Vitalogy era and is the send off show before they embarked on a trip through the Pacific Rim. As always with this era, this show is all about Jack Irons leading the charge. His time in the band was still in its infancy, but you can see the direction that the band wanted to go with him. While the brand new Vitalogy songs were squarely in the forefront, it pushed aside songs from Ten that had been extremely popular only three years prior. There's only two songs from Ten in this show (feel free to include State Of Love And Trust from the time period) and the way those songs were attacked was in a way to trying something different to make them feel fresh. Porch was lifted from it's normal closing role to the fifth spot in the set that saw it's typically iconic live solo abridged, Even Flow experimented with a new intro and pieces of the song that strayed from the radio version, and SOLAT is a completely different monster that they did not continue moving forward with. This show also has killer versions of Spin The Black Circle, Immortality and one of three full versions of W.M.A. that Jack has played on. Also, we have a song that's a Live On 4 Legs first at this show! Javier's segment will focus on that incredibly insane version of W.M.A. and we invite one half of the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, Patrick Boegel, to break down the circulation of the bootleg tape from this show. Wed, 14 Aug 2024 - 1h 39min - 365 - Episode 296: Lollapalooza Reston, VA - 8/14/1992
This episode takes us back to a time when Pearl Jam's popularity was skyrocketing. MTV Unplugged had took place, the Jeremy music video was out and the band garnered a lot of attention traveling on the Lollapalooza tour as one of the afternoon openers. This episode covers a Lollapalooza show from Fairfax County, Virginia where the band were in their prime and "all the rage". The episode will cover not just Pearl Jam's impact on the festival, but also the festival's impact on the culture of the early 90's. This show is seen as somewhat of a pillar moment for the band this summer because as they were rising up the charts, so were their Seattle brethren Soundgarden traveling on the same tour. Right around this time as both Vedder and Cornell became the defacto faces of the grunge scene, people were starting to pick up on the collaboration that they did for Temple Of The Dog a year prior. Hunger Strike was blossoming into a massive hit and wasn't something that was played often until they decided to join forces at this show. From there, it became one of those rare moments that people salivated for. They'd continue to bust it out on occasion during this tour, including during a random side stage performance in Phoenix. This episode is produced a little bit differently since we are only working with eight songs. You'll get the rare experience of listening to an entire show on this podcast! Of course we stop and chat in between, but every song will be played in full with Even Flow as a lone exception. This episode also features a conversation about the newly retired Aerosmith and how that happening this past week tied in perfectly with this episode. Wed, 07 Aug 2024 - 1h 30min - 364 - Episode 295: Vienna, AUT - 6/25/2014
It's Olympics week, and since we've been following heavily on some of Pearl Jam's past European shows lately, why not add one more into the fold to keep the theme alive? This show from Vienna is like running a marathon as the band treats us to nearly 3 hours of an excellent 35-song set. Everything was on the table here as they dipped into songs from nearly every album, including many of the check list songs for all of the serious collectors. The theme for this show? Less talk, more rock. The band wasted no time at the beginning of the show going on a run of eight straight songs to start the show. This was not necessarily a night for chatting, it was a night for amazing bass grooves and solos ala Gossard. We'll talk about how great they both sound at this one and highlight songs such as Hail, Hail and Brain Of J where they both thrived. But the rarities also dominate the night as it's the last time to date that they've played Can't Keep, Rats and the deep Backspacer cut Speed Of Sound is also featured at this show. We also hear some rare covers involved including Rain, Public Image and Needle And The Damage Done. We'll also get into a deep conversation about how meaningful encore 2 sets are outside of creating the party atmosphere to close your night. Wed, 31 Jul 2024 - 1h 38min - 363 - Episode 294: Vancouver, BC - 5/4/2024
It's time to cover our first show from Pearl Jam's Dark Matter tour, which also happens to be the first show from Pearl Jam's Dark Matter tour! It all got started back in May as the band headed north of home to Vancouver to try some new ones out on the Canadian crowd. With 17 shows under our belt now, this is a good opportunity to look back and get a sense of how the new songs are being implemented within their setlists every night. The first night of the tour saw nine of the eleven album songs played, everything except Waiting For Stevie and Got To Give. Right away you can tell how hard the band had worked on these songs to make them stand out in front of their dedicated crowd. A few things we'll touch up on with the new ones is how hyper-focused they were during Scared Of Fear in comparison to the looseness of React/Respond, Why Dark Matter has yet to fully flourish, the complexities to how the intro in Upper Hand comes together and why Setting Sun has been an absolutely perfect closer so far. Those topics, plus some fun versions of other songs in their catalog such as Wash, Red Mosquito, Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns and more! Wed, 24 Jul 2024 - 1h 59min - 362 - Episode 293: Milwaukee, WI - 6/30/2006
It's been a rare occurance throughout Pearl Jam's history to see them as the opening act on a tour. They toured in support of Neil Young in the early 90's, and famously for a set of shows for the Rolling Stones in 1997, but for six shows in 2006, Pearl Jam appeared as the opening act for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Pretty good company to cede the headline to, right? This episode covers the second night of Milwaukee's Summerfest from that run. A majority of this episode is dedicated to talking about what Tom Petty means to not only us personally, but music and pop culture as a whole. We'll share stories of our favorite memories getting acquainted with his music, and what he meant to the band as an influence. For a 17-song set, this could have been seen as a typical festival set, but they took advantage of the opportunity and cranked out some special moments. Last Kiss was played as the opener at this show, an occasion that's only happened two other times, we get rarities such as Sad and Around The Bend and Smile with a little dedication to how the story of the song came to be. We'll also discuss the performances of The Waiting and American Girl from the Heartbreakers set that Eddie got to help out with, and the Javier segment is a little bit different this week, so stay tuned for what's in store! Wed, 17 Jul 2024 - 1h 31min - 361 - Episode 292: Lisbon, POR - 7/14/2018
As we plan to bid farewell to a rocky European tour this week, we're prepping for the final show of the run in Lisbon, Portugal by covering their performance at the NOS Alive Festival from 2018. This is the same festival that they'll play this week that they've played two other times in previous years. We'll get to talk about a very special guest who appeared on this show to partake in Rockin' In The Free World, the legendary Jack White! The theme of this episode will circle around the stigma that festival shows get for being way too run of the mill setlist wise and too casual crowd wise. For a crowd in Portugal who goes through extended stretches without seeing this band, this show absolutely bucks the trend of being what some may consider a more generic set. This crowd has a few big moments that transpire here like Low Light being used as an opener with Better Man as the follow up, big crowd participation moments on Daughter, Black and Rearviewmirror, a few deeper cuts thrown in like Rats and In My Tree, and a song that we barely get to talk about on this podcast, Can't Deny Me. Check out the usual rundown of the setlist, but at the top of the episode we'll do a quick reaction to the recent shows that took place in Barcelona! Wed, 10 Jul 2024 - 1h 34min - 360 - Episode 291: Berlin, DEU - 6/26/2014
Well. Originally this episode was slated to get you guys excited for the shows taking place in Berlin this week, but while the band was forced to cancel their plans, we've decided to stick with ours. Berlin is one of Pearl Jam's best cities to play in that perhaps nobody ever talks about. This crowd comes into every show ready to bring their a-game, and at this show in 2014, nothing was spared. From waving their arms in the air to clapping in rhythm, bouncing up and down and singing every lyric and guitar melody, the fans in Germany absolutely know how to give this band the best they got. This Lightning Bolt era show went for nearly 3 hours and featured 34 songs from every variety of rarities to the radio hits. This show will have plenty of great crowd moments, including on songs like Do The Evolution and Sirens where the band is greeted with post-performance melodies. Checklist songs galore here that include God's Dice, Sleight Of Hand, You Are, Who You Are, All Those Yesterdays, Bee Girl and one of the rarest songs in the Pearl Jam catalog, Hold On played for only the fourth of a total of five times. But that's not all! Find out why this crowd needed to hear the dulcet tones of the voice of their favorite guitar player, and the hilarious ensuing result. We'll of course start the show reacting once again to the news of cancelations, and once again bring more context to the situation. Wed, 03 Jul 2024 - 1h 34min - 359 - 2024 Tour Reaction Episode 14: London Cancelation
Pearl Jam was originally slated to stop in London this weekend on their current European tour. Unfortunately due to circumstances that were apparent during the Manchester show, they were forced to cancel the show due to an illness that prevented Eddie Vedder from performing. As we've seen the past few years as the band gets older, they've had to cancel and postpone more shows than they ever have before. In this episode, we'll react to the news and discuss how it may affect the band and the live shows moving forward. We'll also touch up on the ticket controversy that loomed over this show and debunk conspiracy theories made connecting this to the cancelation. Sat, 29 Jun 2024 - 29min - 358 - Episode 290: Hyde Park - 7/8/2022
Pearl Jam loves to play in legendary venues. They've conquered the two oldest baseball parks in America, massive stadium venues in South America and plenty of the most famous arenas throughout the world. In London, the absolute cream of the crop when it comes to concert venues is Hyde Park. Back in 2020, Pearl Jam was scheduled to play Hyde Park alongside the Pixies, but after Covid cancelled all plans, they decided to add an extra date due to the demand. This episode covers the first night of a memorable two-night stay. With massive screens erected for the 65k people to all witness this band from far and near, they came out firing right away. Better Man as an opener sets and amazing tone, Breath was a big surprise played early, Quick Escape featured a little Sex Pistols on the backend and a heartfelt dedication to a fan for Light Years really built up this show to feel as massive as the park. We'll talk about all of the big moments, as well as focusing on the ticket situation which is currently going happening for the show in London this coming weekend. Wed, 26 Jun 2024 - 1h 43min - 357 - Episode 289: Dublin, IRE - 10/26/1996
It's time for Pearl Jam to take the Dark Matter tour over to Europe! For the next month, we'll be doing the same thing as we did in May - focusing on past shows from locations they're about to embark on. First stop is Dublin, Ireland. It's been 14 years since the band has been back there, and strangely enough, they've only played there six times in total! This episode covers a show from Dublin in 1996 during the No Code tour that marks first of three appearances at The Point Theatre. This episode will lean heavily on the coverage of No Code tracks as we get in depth with Hail, Hail, In My Tree, Mankind and Who You Are. Of course with this being a Jack Irons show, he'll dominate much of the conversation. We'll dig into why some of the Ten songs may not have been his specialty as we touch up on tracks such as Release, Even Flow and Alive. We'll also spend some time preparing you for the upcoming tour leg and try our hand at coming up with some ideas that could end up being huge surprises this month! Wed, 19 Jun 2024 - 1h 28min - 356 - Episode 288: Hershey, PA - 7/12/2003
There are countless Pearl Jam shows where all you need to do is mention a location by name and the majority of Pearl Jam fans know exactly what you're talking about. For one lone night at a chocolate factory, when you mention this Hershey show from 2003, everyone knows that it's remembered for one thing - mosquito bites! No, this outdoor venue wasn't invested with mosquitos. The band was greeted by a flasher at this show who had taken her top off in order for the band to recognize her. But what she didn't realize was that they were coming off of one of the longest shows in their history in Mansfield, MA, meaning a six hour drive to Pennsylvania in the same night potentially left Ed a little sleep deprived. It leads to an all-time rant where he comments on the size of her breasts, a quote that has gone down as one of the most memorable things he's ever said. With that being said, the band faced the challenge of following up the experiment by putting together a fun show with a lot of energy. They made up for two songs that were left out of the experiment in Last Exit and Glorified G, dug into some of the deeper Riot Act cuts with Help Help and one of the last versions of Get Right to date, and we get a random appearance of a harmonica on... State Of Love And Trust? Yeah, you read that right. Also, we'll uncover the true story about a friend of Stone's who guested on Rockin In The Free World at this show. Where is he now? The answer may surprise you... really surprise you. Javier makes his return in this episode and will talk about the unique tuning of Daughter, and how that helps transforms the song to make it sound acoustic, even on an electric guitar. Wed, 12 Jun 2024 - 1h 32min - 355 - Episode 287: Salt Lake City, UT - 11/1/1995
As the west coast leg of the Dark Matter tour has come to a close, now is a great opportunity for us to dig into a few great Pearl Jam shows without covering upcoming tour locations. That takes us to November of 1995. A five-show run featuring shows that were postponed from earlier in the tour year that have gone down in history as some of the best of the era. After being forced to postpone a June Salt Lake City show due to weather conditions, the promise Ed had made was that the band would come back and play twice as long. Which means they came back and played two shows instead of one for their make up. This run will always be most known as hosting the live debuts for both Red Mosquito and Brain Of J, the former of which we'll talk about in this episode. Ed would make a quip on night two that it was like the crowd's parents came to night one. While this show may not reach the excitement of night two, that quote has given this show an undeserved stigma that we're out to prove is inaccurate. Some great performances go down on this night including ones from Corduroy, Deep, RVM, Immortality and what amounts to probably the longest version of Blood in the catalog. We'll also dig into an improv titled Seven Years Waiting and a Porch closer that got a little bit weird in the solo. We're also only a week out from the Seattle shows, so we'll chat about the experience and some of the best performances that held up from that night. Wed, 05 Jun 2024 - 1h 33min - 354 - Episode 286: Groundwork Benefit Concert - 10/22/2001
We've made it near the end of the first leg of the Dark Matter tour! With the last stop in Seattle happening as this episode airs, we thought it would obviously be appropriate to cover a show that took place in Pearl Jam's hometown. Since we've covered many of the well known Seattle shows in past episodes (check out the archive to listen, lots of good ones!) we're turning to a benefit show from 2001 in which the band didn't go out and tour on. The Groundwork Benefit was put together to help the Food and Agriculture Organization to solve world hunger. This night featured acts like Alanis Morrisette and R.E.M. as the headliners alongside Pearl Jam. It's only a 10-song set, and since it's still in the shadow of Binaural, the album has a heavy presence at this show. No Ten or Vs. songs were played, but we do get an early version of a Riot Act song over a year before the album release. We'll talk about John Lennon song Gimme Some Truth and how Ed initially wanted to play that during the Tribute To Heroes performance after 9/11, but it became a staple of Pearl Jam's touring circuit during the Iraq War. But the song that's going to resonate the most is a rare closing set performance of Long Road. It's a ten minute version that features Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the nephew of Nusrat who recorded a version of Long Road with Ed for the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. One of the most heartfelt versions of Long Road that you'll ever hear. Along with that, we'll talk about Ed making a guest appearance during R.E.M.'s set to sing People Have The Power and It's The End Of The World As We Know It, and also a little bit of the Athens alternative legends teasing Better Man. Javier joins in for this one, and we'll spend a lot of time talking about our upcoming trip to see the band in Seattle! Just to note, in this episode I may have made some small but rare mistakes regarding facts that I do apologize for. We'll also mention the audio from the YouTube video mixing the guitars really low, but the bootleg that we play in the episode sounds completely normal. A lot of 4am bedtimes in the last month, I'm sure you all understand! Wed, 29 May 2024 - 1h 34min - 353 - Episode 285: Los Angeles, CA - 7/9/2006
Pearl Jam is playing two shows in the City Of Angels this week, so once again we're back to cover another show from their history that they played in The Fabulous Forum. We're going back to 2006, the Avocado tour. A tour that we can kind of connect to what they are doing now with Dark Matter considering the high representation that you'll get each night from the album. This show in LA featured 10 of the 13 tracks while Dark Matter has consistently hovered around 8 of 11. We'll talk a little bit about the impact of the setlists thus far on this tour and where they intersect with Avocado. A great crowd show here (which is disappointing when you look at the ticket sales for both Forum shows for this week) and we'll get into how they made what could be considered a standard setlist to many feel exciting. The crowd came to participate on songs like Release, Corduroy, Even Flow, Small Town, Last Kiss and Alive, but also reacted well to the brand new songs. The highlights of this set that we'll get into come from Rearviewmirror, Crown Of Thorns, Gone, Big Wave and Inside Job, and we'll get to see an appearance from Tim Robbins joining in on a modern take of a song by folk musician Phil Ochs. Javier will join us to talk and teach about the Dumble amps that they've been using all tour, and he'll do a breakdown of Big Wave as well. Stay tuned as he'll join the show next week in preparation for Seattle! Wed, 22 May 2024 - 1h 35min - 352 - Episode 284: Las Vegas, NV - 6/6/2003
The Dark Matter tour keeps trucking along as we now have four shows under our belt and are looking forward to a big weekend in Las Vegas where anything can happen! To get you even more excited for that, this week's episode goes back to the Vegas show during the mighty 2003 Riot Act tour! Coming off of an absolutely legendary performance for their 10th anniversary show in 2000, this crowd came in with a ton of excitement and never let down all night. This show will feature two guests who are vital to the existence of Pearl Jam - Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. They'll join the band for a fun rendition of Rockin' In The Free World, but before that we'll get into a conversation about why if it wasn't for Nancy, Pearl Jam may not have been able to fund Ten following the death of Andy Wood. It's a story that doesn't get told often and it never got a mention in PJ20, but we'll share how it all went down for you here in the episode. This show should be recognized as a Mike McCready explosion! Mike was on fire the entire night putting on a clinic during such songs as Even Flow, Go, Love Boat Captain, Breath, Crazy Mary, Fuckin' Up and that just scratches the surface. Javier will join us for two segments to gush over the tone of Even Flow and Crazy Mary for this one! Wed, 15 May 2024 - 1h 37min - 351 - Episode 283: Sacramento, CA - 7/16/1998
The Dark Matter tour is now underway! As Pearl Jam took the stage this past weekend for two shows in Vancouver, we now know how the songs on the brand new record sound like, and know a little of how they'll be structured live. The tour will be addressed at the top of the show, but for more, tap into our reaction episodes over on our Patreon! The show we're covering in this episode preps us for next week's show in Sacramento as we'll breakdown Pearl Jam's show there from 1998. There is a notable running storyline in this show that will dominate the talking points. Back in 1998, Pearl Jam had invited legacy rock acts such as Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick and Frank Black to support them as their openers. Legendary punk band X took the stage at this show with the entire band watching them from the side stage. Eddie Vedder even introduced them onto the stage. While they were excited to witness the renowned Los Angeles band, it did not translate to the crowd in a way that satisfied Ed. He keeps a grudge with him the entire night featuring moments where he'd shout 'fuck you' and 'you really pissed me off tonight' in order to get his aggression out. A lot of the discussion will stem from the middle of the set where a lackluster demeanor was present, but there are also great moments here to address such as Spin The Black Circle to open the show, a firey Go to end the main set, Matt Cameron's first performance of In My Tree, and a version of Corduroy dubbed "slideuroy" that Javier will dig into featuring Mike using a slide pick on the song. We also got to see the usage of a brand new screen that presented a cool experience unseen in 30+ years of Pearl Jam. We'll talk about all of the new songs, including the major tease of the full album being played, holding out until the 5th song til play anything from it, a brand new show closer and a surprise appearance of Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns. Sun, 05 May 2024 - 40min - 349 - Episode 282: Portland, OR - 11/2/2000
It's tour time! Pearl Jam is about to get back on the road for the first leg of their Dark Matter tour on the west coast, and we're continuing to focus on past shows from the locations that they'll be playing in May. This episode takes us to Portland, Oregon from the 2000 Binaural tour. The back half of the tour that year featured some of the best shows that Pearl Jam has ever played starting with their 10th anniversary show in Vegas and ending on an instant classic to end the tour in Seattle. This show in Portland checks every single box from what you want of that era - Matt Cameron's absolute dominance of the drum kit, Ed's fierce and ear shattering vocals and Mike McCready's spacy, yet piercing solos from the left side. The overall theme for this show was how the band started off on fire and almost never took the foot off the pedal. A six song kick off of Sometimes, Grievance, Corduroy, Go, Hail, Hail and Dissident made a statement and set the expectations immediately. We'll get into other massive moments such as a phenomenal stretch featuring Untitled, MFC and Habit in a row, a different take on the Man Trilogy now featuring a feminine presence, but most importantly of all, we get an improv before closing out encore 1 with Rearviewmirror that is the absolute stand out from this show. Javier is back and will break down Stone's solo on MFC and a little bit of how Ed had a great show on the axe specifically highlighting a banger version of Habit. But most importantly, we take listener questions about the upcoming Dark Matter tour and some of your expectations and inquiries of how it will all go down! Wed, 01 May 2024 - 1h 35min - 348 - Episode 281: Vancouver, BC - 9/2/2005
Ahhh, we're officially in our Dark Matter era! This tortured podcaster's department is delighted by the release of Pearl Jam's brand new record, and furthermore are even MORE excited for a big tour year in 2024! That's why today's episode is the beginning of a six week run that will focus on every big location that Pearl Jam will play on the west coast. We're gonna kick it off with the tour opener town covering a 2005 Canadian tour show in Vancouver! Coincidentally, this Vancouver show in 2005 was also seen as the true kick off to that tour. The memorable Gorge performance was the night before, but since this run took you all the way through the Canadian plains, Vancouver got it started. We'll talk a lot about how this tour was perhaps the first of it's kind where the band wasn't promoting a record, so they had the freedom to create some wild sets. This tour was also known for it's heavy usage of songs featured on Lost Dogs, which had been release a little over a year prior to that time. We get to see a few at this show, including the rare appearances for songs such as U and Bee Girl. Save You, Better Man, Love Boat Captain and Immortality are great highlights, and you'll get to see which song Ed tried to turn into a whistling sensation that may have backfired on him. Oh, did I mention that we have our first taste of live performances from Dark Matter?! We'll discuss Pearl Jam's appearance with Howard Stern and get into both performances of Scared Of Fear and Running. Potato!

Which is why we got together at midnight ET to talk about the entire thing. Hear our friends share their thoughts about the songs, the references, the production, the melodies and the live implications as we celebrate a band that that has so profoundly impacted our lives. Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 1h 12min - 346 - Episode 280: New York, NY - 4/17/1994
It's a big week here on the podcast with lots to celebrate! It's Dark Matter week! Coming off the heels of the film experience, we'll share our instant reaction to listening to the album in that environment including what songs we've gravitated towards, and what we're excited to hear live. Keep in mind that the Live On 4 Legs listening party will happen on Thursday night when the record drops everywhere, if you want to be a part of that round table, please reach out! Although the brand new record is the lead, we don't want to bury the purpose of the episode because it's extremely vital to the history of Pearl Jam. The Paramount Theater show to close out the 1994 tour in the gallows of Madison Square Garden was one of a few fan club shows from this year. It comes a day after their legendary Saturday Night Live performance, a little over the week since the death of Kurt Cobain, and it is the final show involving drummer Dave Abbruzzese. While the fan club crowd was red hot and participated in every song from the hits to the b-sides, this was a night where Ed had a lot on his mind as he was unsure about the future of this band. We share excerpts from an article written in Melody Maker where a frustrated Vedder expresses his anger over Kurt's death and even questions his own mortality. Directly following this show, Pearl Jam would cancel their plans for a summer tour and part with Dave A shortly afterwards. Big storylines aside, this is an electric show with some absolute barnburner performances. Rearviewmirror, Daughter and Not For You all came off the heels of the SNL performance the night prior and proved to be just as powerful as they were on TV, other Vitalogy songs such as Whipping and Satan's Bed are notable moments, Ten b-sides Alone and Footsteps were huge crowd moments and Garden and Blood were huge standouts as well. We'll have a plethora of guests here as Javier's Gear Guru segments will focus in on Dave A's contributions to the band, and we invite Patrick and Brian from our sister podcast, Hallucinogenic Recipe, to come in and discuss the bootleg distribution for this show back in the mid-90's. Wed, 17 Apr 2024 - 1h 59min - 345 - Episode 279: Rochester, NY - 4/7/1994
The beginning of April in 1994 marked the start of a stretch that may go down as one of the most important runs in Pearl Jam's history. It all starts with the Fox Theater show in Atlanta that everybody knows, and then shortly afterward the news of Kurt Cobain's death shocked the world. Pearl Jam would go on to play a legendary show at the Orpheum Theater and then shortly after, they are front and center on Saturday Night Live. This show we're covering here is from Rochester that took place the day before Cobain's death was announced. After a few instances of playing through some tough off stage issues in the middle of the tour, this was during a run where the band was on a big time hot streak. This show has some notable moments that makes it stand out among the others from this tour. Wash was the show opener, something that was so rare for the time that they had only done it once all tour. On top of that, it's a big highlight from this show. This night features the second version of Corduroy ever played. We'll break that down into detail and discuss how some of the identity remains the same as today, but little tweaks afterwards have made it more of a showstopping performance. And we'll talk about Ed's quote in reaction to the real story about Jeremy. Many great performances, and stories from our Patron Robert Rieb who requested this episode! Wed, 10 Apr 2024 - 1h 28min - 344 - Remembering Tom Pugh Of Given To Live
This episode is a tribute to friend of the Pearl Jam community, Tom Pugh. Tom founded a charitable organization called Given To Live which sent fans who have faced challenges in their lives to get a full experience of seeing their favorite artist live. He worked tirelessly to accomplish his life's mission and impacted the lives of so many people deserving of a special moment. Tom passed away this past weekend unexpectedly. His service for our community deserves to be recognized, which is why we have repurposed an interview with him from August 2020 for you all to get a glimpse of the amazing work he did. Tom always used the saying "Because You Matter" referring to the fans who benefitted from his philanthropy. Because of the efforts that he made in creating a life time of memories for so many families, his life is one that truly mattered. Please enjoy our tribute to his life and work.
Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 43min - 343 - Episode 278: Copenhagen, DEN - 7/5/2022
Let's look back to a Pearl Jam show that was played less than two years ago in Copenhagen, Denmark. Every time the band makes their way through there, its with heavy hearts attributing back to the 2000 tragedy at the Roskilde Festival where nine people lost their lives. During the initial 2020 run scheduled before Covid happened, the date that they were set to play Copenhagen was on June 29th, just a day short of the 20th anniversary of that day. The band wear their hearts on their sleeves for an emotionally powerful version of Love Boat Captain where Ed expresses his sorrow and explains how it changed the band moving forward. This week we have an interview with Joshua and Yonat Goldberg, a father and daughter who experienced their first Pearl Jam show on this night. We'll get to hear their background of how they discovered the band and bonded over them before deciding to take a visit to Denmark to see them. It's a great story for anyone who has passed music down to their children in hopes to get them to feel the same impact that they experienced at a young age. Outside of Love Boat Captain, we'll focus in on performances of Lukin, Daughter, Retrograde and Never Destination, While Javier will join us to discuss the 2022 reemergence of Garden, and a little bassy Stone Gossard on Dance of the Clairvoyants. Wed, 03 Apr 2024 - 1h 34min - 342 - Episode 277: Memphis, TN - 3/25/1994
This episode is about uncovering unsolved mysteries within Pearl Jam lore. We're back to celebrating the 30th anniversary of the memorable 1994 tour, and we find ourselves covering a Memphis show that does not get the acclaim that other shows from this run do. But perhaps this show is more significant than we think? We invite on Patron Mike Cribier to share his stories from this night that had been held back for quite some time. After sharing his recollection of this show to Pearl Jam fan run sites, his information could not be verified, and his story was never told. We're going to rectify that in this episode! As video from the early 90s tends to be a crapshoot for some Pearl Jam shows, this is indeed a show that does not have any visual aid. So how is it possible to tell if or when things are happening just by listening to bootleg audio? The stories that get revealed feature a fan getting heavily involved in Leash, Mike crowd surfing while wearing a Nosferatu mask and potentially the most important, Ed smashing his mic stand into the ground to create a massive hole. This is something that was famously done in Boston only weeks after, but could this have been the first ocassion? We'll get into talking about those storylines, as well as some excellent performances with the highlights being Deep, Not For You, Porch and Blood. We'll also talk about a pre-Vitalogy version of Last Exit... that a fan in the crowd knows the lyrics to? Fri, 22 Mar 2024 - 46min - 340 - Episode 276: Eindhoven, NLD - 3/5/1992
Pearl Jam was on a special run as the season turned to spring in March of 1992. They were headlining small club shows in Europe, clicking well together on stage and getting incredible reactions from the crowd who knew the catalog. While we have looked into some of the highly praised Netherlands shows from this run (Den Haag, Utrecht), this episode touches up on a show that is a bit forgotten about from Eindhoven. Being the 20th show on a rigorous touring schedule, being on the road can kind of catch up with you after a while. After canceling a show two days prior to give Ed vocal rest, he came into this show without the normal zip on his fastball. Songs that are usually known for high-octane intensity were a bit laboring on Ed's voice. We'll talk about that, and how the setlist likely needed rearranging to try and capture momentum, but we'll also talk about some of the major issues that they were having with crowds at the time. During this version of Alive, there are multiple moments of commotion - a guys loses his "spectacles" and stage divers are carelessly jumping on and off the stage whilst kicking people in the head and stepping all over the band's gear. We'll focus on a message from an irate Jeff Ament, who had just about enough of the shenanigans happening at the time. Also, we had some new sound bytes revealed from Dark Matter this week! We re-recorded our original opening segment that was about it being a little bit too quiet with a month to go until the release date because we got snippets of both Something Special and Running within the days between our recording schedule. We'll talk about what we hear from those songs, and we'll break down Stone Gossard's interview with Jonathan Cohen for SPIN.com. Wed, 20 Mar 2024 - 1h 33min - 339 - Episode 275: Pensacola, FL - 3/9/1994
This episode begins our coverage celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam's Vs. tour in 1994. With this tour falling smack dab in the middle of the band's prime, there are a plethora of storylines inside and outside of the shows that make this year a memorable one. Vitalogy songs were getting played in the set prior to the album's release, legendary shows took place in cities such as Boston and Atlanta, dealing with Ticketmaster, bomb threats, backstage break-ins, and Dave Abbruzzese exit from the band. This episode features a Rock For Choice show that took place in Pensacola, Florida a year after the death of Dr. David Gunn, a doctor who performed safe abortions on women who were unable to birth a child. The band has actively supported a women's right to choose going back to their formation. You may remember moments such as Ed wearing a t-shirt with a coat hanger on it during their 1992 performance on Saturday Night Live, and most famously at MTV Unplugged where Ed wrote pro-choice on his arm with a marker. The point of the episode is to discuss some of the band's history of activism, but also within the nature of our world at this current moment, it was extremely difficult to provide an episode on abortion rights without addressing what's going on. That means you will get to hear our heartfelt opinions on the subject at hand. If this is something that you are uncomfortable listening to at this point in time, please take note of that before checking out the podcast. The entire night had references (some subtle, others not so much) to the cause that they were fighting to defend, none more relevant than opening with a cover of Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down. The performances are the height of the era with the band absolutely locked in, and Ed tearing into the vocals on songs such as Dissident, Glorified G, Blood, Alive, Porch and many more. We also get to hear a speech from David Gunn Jr. as well as instances where Ed will attack the subject head on. Wed, 13 Mar 2024 - 1h 28min - 338 - Episode 274: Fenway Park - 8/5/2016
For this episode, we're going back to Pearl Jam's first ever appearance at Fenway Park back in 2016. It's appropriate timing because they'll be playing two shows there to close out the tour in September. While it has all of the baseball references and former Red Sox player appearances, the overarching focal point of this episode will focus on the personal experience that Randy had during this show. Have you ever had a concert blunder that you wish you could take back? Did you ever miss a chunk of the set due to arriving late or other negligence? That's what we're going to talk about here as this show was the one and only time that Randy was not in his seat for the opening song. He'll take you through the whole story and hopefully absolve his demons by the end of the show. ***Please note that our audio for this episode is not up to snuff due to connectivity issues during the recording. It's listenable, but expect some glitches throughout*** Playing in one of MLB's legendary cathedrals, Ed would mention on multiple occasions at this show that playing Fenway was a dream come true. It was a night dedicated to celebrating the big moment, and there were plenty of special guests and special performances to back that up. We get our fair share of rarities at this show, including one of the ultra rare deep cuts in their catalog, Strangest Tribe. Back to back with Into The Wild song Society may consist of the rarest opening to an encore of all-time. We also get two massive covers that hadn't been seen at Pearl Jam shows going back a decade. Bob Dylan protest song, Masters Of War was a massive highlight that hadn't been played in 200 shows prior to this, and I've Got A Feeling brought you back to the early 90s and was played for the first time since 2004. Add in that former Red Sox pitcher, Bronson Arroyo, joined in to play Black and former first baseman Kevin Youkilis brought out a uke, it was jam packed with unforgettable moments. Our Gear Guru segments on this episode will have Javier talking about a delay effect coming from Mike on Masters Of War, and a little bit of Ed talk on guitar during Porch. Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 1h 48min - 337 - Episode 273: Brooklyn, NY - 10/18/2013
This episode is jam packed with stories and breakdown from the first night of Pearl Jam's two show stint at the Barclays Center in Brookyln from 2013. We invite a very special guest onto the pod, the former COO of Barclays and the Brooklyn Nets, Fred Mangione. Fred gives us an angle that we haven't discussed a lot from the professional landscape - the business side of booking concerts. As a diehard fan of the band himself, Fred will talk about when the Barclays Center opened, there was stiff competition to pull acts away from Madison Square Garden, the biggest destination for entertainment acts in New York City. He'll talk about how they managed to get Pearl Jam to pivot from their usual location to land them on the Lightning Bolt tour. We'll also get to hear the story about how they were originally set to play in Brooklyn for 2016, as well as the details of how the band's attendance record was broken thanks to The Boss. Continuing with this month's theme of focusing on shows that the hosts attended, Randy will talk about his stories from this night... or lack thereof. Riding solo at this show, we'll start a conversation about how memories can tend to fade over time without having anyone to share them with. Going to shows alone is great, you get to dictate when you get in the building, you don't care if you embarrass yourself if you sing a little louder and you can focus on your own fun. That's all great in the present, but when looking back over a decade later, those memories tend to fade a little bit because you never created a bond with a friend going through the same experiences that you did. Now, it's probably impossible to forget everything. We'll spend some time talking about songs like Crown Of Thorns and Oceans where the memories have been kept fresh over the years. There are no Gear Guru segments this week. Why you ask? Because the whole entire show is a Gear Guru segment! Javier joins Randy to help break down this show, and he'll go in depth on songs like Release, Infallible and Yellow Moon. Wed, 28 Feb 2024 - 2h 10min - 336 - Episode 272: Columbia, SC - 4/21/2016
We take a trip to what is now eight years in the past (extremely hard to fathom!) to cover Pearl Jam's show in Columbia, South Carolina. There are two major themes heading into this show. Firstly, this show was originally intended to take place a day after a show in Raleigh, North Carolina, which was canceled in protest of the state's HB2 law. The other big storyline heading into the show was the untimely death of rock 'n' roll legend, Prince, that was announced earlier in the day. With heavy hearts, the band set forth to pay tribute to a man who had given so much of his life to music, as Ed would call him, the most amazing guitar player he'd ever seen. This is another show where we get to talk about John's adventures and stories, so we'll dig deep into the two top stories that dominated conversation on this night. It was a set with a shared balance of the deep cuts like Oceans, Light Years, Marker In The Sand, Sleight Of Hand and All Those Yesterdays mixed in with massive showstopping performances of Lightning Bolt, Immortality, I Got Id, Rearviewmirror, Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns and more. But one of the more peculiar things about this set is an OTOTO (one time, one time only) performance of the Into The Wild track, Rise. Done as a birthday dedicated to his mom Karen, this song has not been seen at a Pearl Jam show since. We'll dig deeper into a few songs during our Gear Guru segments where Javier will break down Lightning Bolt rarity, Infallible, and for the first time ever give a full breakdown of Crown Of Thorns. Wed, 21 Feb 2024 - 1h 40min - 335 - Episode 271: Atlanta, GA - 9/22/2012
We've had a very busy week! Album announcement? Check! Debut single announcement? Check! Tour announcement? Oh you better believe it, check! So of course there was a lot to react to during this time period, which we did with two episodes focusing on all of the great stuff that lies ahead. While the normal weekly episode may have been pushed back a day, there was no way that we weren't going to get to Atlanta 2012 this week. This one is personal in many ways for John. It was his first show in 14 years, but he would tell you that more importantly, this is the last time to date that Pearl Jam has visited Atlanta. Twelve years have gone by without returning to the city the featured one of the greatest Pearl Jam shows of all time in 1994. It seems a little befuddling, right? While much of this episode focuses on stories of being there and experiencing them for the first time in over a decade, there is a lot of questions to be asked as to why the band has ignored the ATL, and perhaps a plea or two to try and convince them to go back in the near future. We have some solid performances of Better Man, Porch and Corduroy in this show, and Javier's segments this week will focus on Why Go as well as an interesting effect added to a cover of The Clash song Know Your Rights. It's tour time people, get excited. It's the best! Visit the Concertpedia - http://liveon4legs.com Contact the Show - liveon4legspodcast@gmail.com Donate to the Show - http://patreon.com/liveon4legs
Thu, 15 Feb 2024 - 1h 40min - 334 - 2024 Dark Matter Tour Announcement Episode
It's been a great week! After basking in Pearl Jam's brand new single for Dark Matter on Monday, on Tuesday we were treated to a full blown 2024 touring schedule! 34 dates are spread throughout the course of seven months. Some shows in very familiar stomping grounds, others in spots where the band will be stepping into for the first time in over a decade. We break down each date and location, give a little context to some of the history of them playing there, and we'll go over which shows we believe may end up being barnburners! Tue, 13 Feb 2024 - 40min - 332 - Episode 270: Nashville, TN - 9/16/2022
As we await details on Pearl Jam's forthcoming twelfth studio album, the month of February will be dedicated to covering shows that Randy and John have attended in the past. First up, we're gonna dig into the Nashville show from the Gigaton tour that they both were in attendance for. The weekend was a huge party as Pearl Jam was center stage on Broadway, but the run including Louisville and St. Louis was the first time they played three shows in a row since 2006. Feeling big energy from a crowd who was game all night and playing in an arena with impeccable acoustics, the band constructed a set jam packed full of show stoppers and great stories to live up to the hype of playing in Music City. Randy and John have differing angles when it comes to their personal experiences on this night. For Randy, it was his fourth show out of six during that run with heavy hitting shows such as Toronto, MSG, Camden and St. Louis surrounding this night. He'll talk about how some of the memories from this night tended to fade until relistening and rewatching the events that took place. For John, this was his first show since 2016, so after a six-year hiatus he was ready to jump back in and be a part of the atmosphere again. They, and everyone else who attended this show, were treated to a setlist that featured massive moments such as Nothingman as an opener for only the second time, an incredible back-to-back featuring Black and Present Tense, Rats thanks to that night's tour poster, a mind blowing Immortality, a heavy hearted River Cross and many more moments that make this show stand out. The Gear Guru segments for this show will focus on the aforementioned version of Immortality, and we'll even get a little demo from Javier! And he'll also discuss the 1958 Flying V that came from the Gibson Vault that Mike used on both Alive and Ledbetter. Wed, 07 Feb 2024 - 1h 48min - 331 - Episode 269: Columbus, OH - 5/6/2010
This episode is a very spiritual affair that will have us look deep into the depths of Pearl Jam as a "religion" of sorts. We're discussing Columbus 2010, and during one of Ed's speeches he talks about it being national prayer day and considering turning the band into a religion in order to be tax exempt, and have Stone as their Jesus! So the episode is somewhat molded around the theme of the fanbase celebrating the band as if it were a religion, and how our experiences with the music also creates a common bond with others throughout our community. They even tie performances into this theme such as Faithfull, Marker In The Sand, and of course Alive. While we read from the old testament of Pearl Jam, we are visited by a holy spirit in this show in the form of Mike McCready. During the pre-set, Mike came out and played a two-song solo set, something that he almost never does. Digging into a Stones cover of Dead Flowers and an original song written for his son, we'll talk about his efforts and why a solo record could work really well for him. Another big topic from this show stems from an unsolved mystery of a fan local to the Columbus area. Brian Shaffer disappeared while out with friends in April of 2006, and 18 years later this has remained a cold case. Ed raises awareness to the situation, and it's something that has remained a pinned thread on the Ten Club forum to this day. The band plays a haunting version of Come Back in his honor that makes for one of the most powerful moments at this show. Thanks to our Patron, Travis Howell, for requesting this show and joining us to tell his story. Javier will join this episode to talk about how much he loves the sound of the 2010 tour (which is not very much at all) and will focus on Amongst The Waves and Marker In The Sand. Wed, 31 Jan 2024 - 1h 33min - 330 - Episode 268: Melbourne, AUS - 11/16/2006
With some rumors swirling about Pearl Jam playing Australia this year for the first time since 2014, we thought now would be as good of a time as any to get into a show from down under. 2006 was the last time they played Australia without the help of the Big Day Out festival. For Melbourne, they were treated to three great shows in the same fashion that they had done in previous years, such as 1995 and 1998. While the performances are great from this show, there is one thing that will make this one go down in the annals of Pearl Jam history, and that is... Ed's butt cheeks. Yes, you read that right. Three nights in Melbourne means that shenanigans are bound to be had both after the shows and on the off day, which Ed had partaken in. During his escapades, he was informed of a traditional Australian drinking game in which you take a 50 cent coin, wedge it between your butt cheeks and then try and walk with it over to a cup and see if you can drop it in. In the spirit of a night three, Ed plays the game on stage to pretty hilarious results. Also, Stone takes a crack (ha....) at it as well. Aside from that, we have some great performances at this show. We'll end up talking about Jeff a lot who is prominent in the mix on such songs like Hail, Hail and Even Flow, and Javier's segments this week will focus heavily on the Telecaster sound during World Wide Suicide and Save You, as well as Mike's Ibanez (not Gibson) Flying V on Present Tense. Wed, 24 Jan 2024 - 1h 32min - 329 - Episode 267: Prague, CZ - 9/22/2006
This episode is manhandled by a recurring theme in which Pearl Jam has never attempted prior or since. On a 2006 night in Prague following a very memorable series of shows in Italy, the band balanced a main set sprint with a first encore where five songs all connected. As we are used to sometimes seeing the songs Better Man, Nothingman and Leatherman used together in what has been dubbed "The Man Trilogy", on this night the trilogy expanded it's tribe by adding in Dead Man and Man Of The Hour into what we dub as The Man Pentology. This is a one off instance which was never repeated in this group of five again, and we're excited to share it with you because it's things like this that seem to get forgotten about over time. Especially at a show that was not played in America. As mentioned, this is one of the fastest main sets you'll ever witness from the modern era clocking in at an hour and 8 minutes. When sets tend to trail on the faster side, that's all thanks to Matt Cameron's furious pace that he brought to the table during shows in this era. Songs like Sad, Daughter and Marker In The Sand were all revved up more than usual, and even the songs that already have that identity such as Last Exit, Whipping and Animal were all amped up a little more than usual. We'll work quick through this set, but not before taking a moment to feature some of our favorite songs, including a few Filthy Fills tossed in there. Check out this week's Gear Guru segments with Javier where he'll break down a phaser that McCready uses on Life Wasted, to talking about a pedal no longer featured on Stone's board that was implemented in this version of Insignificance. Wed, 17 Jan 2024 - 1h 32min - 328 - Episode 266: Birmingham, AL - 4/9/2003
The coldest show in Pearl Jam history located in East Troy, Wisconsin was so cold that it was dubbed the nickname 'The Ice Bowl'. When you think of cold weather areas, Wisconsin makes a lot of sense to have held the coldest show ever. But the second coldest show? If you had Birmingham, Alabama on your bingo card, I will assume you've cheated. Yes, you've heard correctly. On a cold night in April of 2003, Pearl Jam played in front of a smaller capacity crowd in 40 degree weather... in deep south Alabama. It's kind of crazy to say aloud, but the storyline for this show is how both band and crowd react to the situation, and the put together a very good show despite all that transpired. Our Patron Tasker Hewitt will join us for the episode to talk about his experience of being in the crowd on that night. The weather isn't the complete story here, because had they of sold well for original venue Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena, they wouldn't have had to worry about the rough temperatures. The original plan was for them to play in the same arena which they played in 1998, a larger capacity building than the amphitheater they'd end up moving to, but tickets were not in very high demand and that's what forced the switch. This led to a great crowd full of hardcore fans that all filled up the GA ready to make it a memorable night. In ways it was. They have some great stretches of songs in which the band purposefully made sure that the crowd stay energetic, the best example being a stretch of Even Flow, Daughter and Better Man played as the 4th 5th and 6th songs of the night. There are some great moments in this set. We'll spend a lot of time on songs such as Thumbing My Way and Animal, and Black will be a massive discussion point as well. But if there is one thing to take away from this night, it's the way they ended this show. After Yellow Ledbetter, the band still has their instruments strapped in. A tease of Sweet Home Alabama from McCready at the end of Ledbetter would potentially make this crowd think there was more ahead. Instead, it was one of the weirdest troll jobs in the history of this band. Matt clicks his sticks four times, the band strums one note, and everyone walks off as if everything was normal. We'll get into this at full detail and try to figure out what the hell was going on. Javier returns to the show this week for segments focusing on both Even Flow and Black! Wed, 10 Jan 2024 - 1h 29min - 327 - Episode 265: Camden, NJ - 9/1/2000
Welcome to the unofficial sixth season of Live On 4 Legs Podcast! While 2024 is gearing up to be a massive year for Pearl Jam and we plan to be there covering it every step of the way, we're still very excited to get you guys the weekly episodes covering all of your favorite shows throughout the history of this band. We're going to kick off the new year with a great show from the Binaural tour in 2000 located in Camden, New Jersey. This show took place near the end of the first North American leg, which had it's ups and downs due to it's proximity to the date of the Roskilde tragedy. By this point, the band had kind of found their own way out of the funk and strung together some excellent shows down the home stretch. This Camden show is a standout due to it's remarkable run from the middle of the main set straight through to the end. It kicks off with an electrifying Given To Fly, features a version of Better Man which we'll have tons of talking points about the tag, Present Tense's "twinkle", Spin The Black Circle's sheer speed and Black's ability to melt your soul. It was not the best show for Ed's voice, but everyone powered through it and the band had his back in times which he struggled. Another storyline from this night was the contingent of fans who brought signs for Breath with them, very similar to the moment at MSG on the previous tour, and for the only time during this entire tour year the band makes a setlist adjustment in order to play it. Also, what 80's metal songs were tagged at the end of Yellow Ledbetter? Stay tuned, the answer may surprise you... or may not. You can pretty much look that up. Wed, 03 Jan 2024 - 1h 35min - 326 - 2023 Pearl Jam Live Show Hall Of Fame Induction
It's the end of the year and time to relive the things we've accomplished in 2023. Only six shows from episodes covered this year ended up with a perfect 10 score from both parties, so we're bringing them all back for a little year in review before heading into a brand new year in 2024. Those six episodes are Mansfield night II 2003, Mansfield night III 2003, Birmingham 1998, Slim's 1993, Hartford 2013 and Chicago night I 2023. We'll play a clip from each of those episodes and talk about our personal favorite episodes this year, and we'll talk about your favorite episodes as well! And of course, what's an end of the year episode without giving you a little hint of what's to come for the Live On 4 Legs 2024 season?! All of that, and our two veteran's committee episodes get inducted voted by you the fans. Thanks for a great year! Wed, 27 Dec 2023 - 1h 20min - 325 - Episode 264: Chicago, IL - 9/7/2023
It's our final episode for the 2023 season, and what better way to close out than finishing with a show from this tour year. In the last episode, we covered the night one show from Chicago, and this episode will take us to the second night at the United Center. This show had a lot to live up to in many people's eyes as night one was considered, at least by our panelists, as an instant classic show. The second night had to follow up on all of the stories, rarities and energy that made night one so special. And in ways it certainly did live up to it, but perhaps did it fail to capture the same magic as the show on September 5th did? We polled our social media followers and asked them what they thought the more impactful show was, and we'll share the result on the episode. There are a couple of big takeaways from this show. They involved the local sports teams into the night a little more and featured a version of Present Tense coming off the popularity of The Last Dance, and they also made an announcement that the Blackhawks would be retiring Chris Chelios' number. The rarities were once again in the mix as this crowd was treated to some of the more difficult songs to catch at a Pearl Jam show nowadays - Tremor Christ, Green Disease and Marker In The Sand. But there is a big elephant in the room to address that took a stranglehold over the second half of the show, and that is the contingent of Ten songs played. Compared to night one where Gigaton led the clubhouse with 4 songs off the album played, there were a whopping 8 songs from the Ten record on this night. Of course the majority of your crowd is going to love Ten, in this scenario the question needs to be asked - how much is enough? We're joined in this episode by our Gear Guru Javier Hervas, not just for a few sprinkled in segments, but for the entire episode! Javier and Randy sat with each other at this show and will share all of the stories of hanging out with friends, finding good records, taking shots of Malort, and of course, the performances. This includes a story about a nickname given to Randy by another fan at this show that a few people out there would probably not want to stick. All the answers will be found in the episode that we have made. Wed, 20 Dec 2023 - 2h 14min - 324 - Episdoe 263: Chicago, IL - 9/5/2023
Let's finish off the year strong by covering the two night stay from this year's Chicago shows! We'll talk extensively about night 1 in this episode and discuss why this was in fact a true instant classic in the Pearl Jam catalog. It had a perfect mix of everything you want from a Pearl Jam show - electric performances, great crowd connection, incredible storytelling and of course ones for the serious collectors. Randy was at this show, which means he'll do his own fair share of storytelling about the moments that made a profound impact on him, and a little of the journey that took him from Connecticut to Chicago. Including one horrifying story about a bathroom in a Chicago dive bar... Being in Chicago, the show is of course a homecoming party for Ed. But this was the first instance where they played a show outside of Wrigley Field since 2009. So now you have a much more intimate crowd, how does the night go down? Well for starters, Release is going to end up being your opener, because that's always what happens there. Then you'll get a Bulls or Cubs reference, a few stories about his days living there as a child and maybe some shout outs to friends. Those things happened, but the night wasn't about any of that. It was a night to pay homage to family. Having attended his Aunt Sandy's funeral the day prior, Ed was feeling nostalgic for going back on some of the memories he had of his grandmother's apartment growing up. The story that unfolded from revisiting the old stomping grounds was an emotional high point on a night where there were many. We also got a Rearviewmirror dedication for beloved community member Frans Von Franquemont who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. The Gear Guru warms up for his big full episode appearance next week by gushing over a rare type of pedal that Mike McCready used for Retrograde that was heard in the song Higher Ground, and talking about the bag of tricks Mike doled out in this edition of Even Flow. Wed, 13 Dec 2023 - 2h 15min - 323 - Episode 262: Vancouver, BC, CAN - 9/4/1993
This episode is our fifth and final in our run of celebrating 30 years of the Vs. era. We've decided to go backwards a little bit and veer away from the November/December shows by covering one from Vancouver when they opened up for Neil Young back in September from that year. After five years, this is our first opportunity to discuss a show that emanated from the Seattle's neighbor to the north, so we'll take some time to dig into the history of shows from there and find something special about each of them. For this show in 1993, it's only 16 songs, and suffers a bit from really bad acoustics in a big football stadium that did not meet expectations of ticket sales. Although Pearl Jam and Ed seemed ripe to take a jab at the place every opportunity they got, they made the most of it and gave the crowd a preview of half the Vs. record which was still over a month away from being released. This show was also the follow up to the legendary performances of Animal and Rockin' In The Free World at the VMA's, so we'll talk a little about the immediate impact of those two moments. Wed, 06 Dec 2023 - 1h 19min - 322 - Episode 261: Las Vegas, NV - 12/1/1993
It's Groundhog Day... again! For the fifth time in seven episodes (and it'll be sixth in eight next week before getting to some 2023 shows) we're celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Vs. tour. The tour certainly had it's ups and downs, and while the last two episodes could be considered some of the down moments, this second night in Vegas is the follow up to a show that's pound for pound one of the best on this tour. The first night in Vegas featured a reunion of Green River, and the moment where Jeff and Stone joined Mark Arm and Steve Turner for the first time since 1987 seemed to re-energize the band. As they only had two more dates before ending the tour on a triple header back home in Seattle, you're able to tell that a little bit of the weight was lifted off their backs. It had been a year of growing pains, but on most nights they were able to put aside their struggle with fame to spend 90 minutes giving the crowd a show to remember. All of the positive energy was radiant on stage at this show with Jeff doing his signature zips and leaps across the stage and Ed's voice having that trademark ferocity for the era. We'll dig deep into songs like Go, Glorified G, Daughter, Garden, Blood, Porch and others that were the highlights from this night. We'll also react to the news announced by Matt Cameron that the new album is mixed and ready, and the Gear Guru segments this week will dig into an intro for Daughter that had a very 80s, Tears For Fears or Police sound to it, and will get into Mike's experimental, Sonic Youth inspired sound on the Porch solo. Wed, 29 Nov 2023 - 1h 21min - 321 - Episode 260: Nacogdoches, TX - 11/20/1993
Let's stick in 1993 for this episode and head over to Nacogdoches, Texas, a show that takes place only days after Ed's arrest in New Orleans that we talked about last week. This show yet again presents all of the trials and tribulations of being on tour in 1993. After playing nearly non-stop, and spending their off days working on and recording brand new music, the rigorous travel had finally gotten to the health of Dave Abbruzzese where he is needed to rush to the emergency room after the main set. This left for the band to improvise an encore without drums. We invite one of the most knowledgeable Pearl Jam minds onto the show that wrote THE book chronicling the history and timeline of Pearl Jam in PJ20, Jonathan Cohen. Jonathan joins us to give a little bit of context to the era and why the band had a difficult time dealing with their skyrocketing popularity, and what they did to seek the advice of rock 'n' roll's elder statesmen to help guide them through. We'll also talk a little bit about Pearl Jam's 2024 plans and what you can expect from a new album year! We'll spend some time on some interesting setlist decisions from this show, including the choice to open with the Daughter/Glorified G combination, Sonic Reducer in the middle of the main set and of course the decisions made without Dave on hand. The Gear Guru segments will break down both Yellow Ledbetter and Footsteps that were performed without drums at this show. Wed, 22 Nov 2023 - 1h 37min - 320 - Episode 259: New Orleans, LA - 11/17/1993
As we continue our ode to the 30 years of the Vs. tour this November, we're stopping at a show that's known for both what happened during the concert, and then what happened in the aftermath. The show is an unforgettable night from this tour highlighted by a very early rendition of Crazy Mary in which original songwriter, Victoria Williams, joins them to play guitar and sing, and long-time Pearl Jam producer, Brendan O'Brien, is called upon to play the B3. It's a moment that's etched in history, but perhaps gets overshadowed by the events that took place the following night. After a dispute with a fan in a New Orleans bar, Eddie Vedder was arrested for public drunkenness and disturbing the peace after spitting in the man's face. We'll take the early portion of the episode to discuss about the incident as we'll invite the 1993 American League Cy Young award winner, Jack McDowell, onto the show, who was there during the occurrence. We'll talk to Jack about his relationship with Eddie and how they met through their ex-wives, how Pearl Jam got his band V.I.E.W. bumped off a gig at CBGB's, how he and Ed convinced TV reporters that Ed was a White Sox call-up, and of course the New Orleans situation. Get to hear what he thought of the whole ordeal and how his night ended up after getting into it with the friend of the agitator that Ed had to deal with. There was only so much time that we had to share of his interview in this episode, but check out Patreon this week for the director's cut of the interview featuring stories about his band's V.I.E.W. and stickfigure, Pearl Jam's relationship with baseball and his current frustrations with baseball analytics that he likes to write songs about. As for the show, there are excellent performances that we'll get to dig into from Why Go, Footsteps, Porch, Rats, Blood and of course, Crazy Mary. We'll also discuss Release being an OTOTO Daughter tag and a wild sequence that featured Ed singing lyrics from Michael Jackson song "Ben" into a fierce, unrelenting rendition of Blood. Wed, 15 Nov 2023 - 1h 40min - 319 - Episode 258: San Diego, CA - 11/3/1993
1993 could be considered as one of the most important years in the history of Pearl Jam. Vs. sold over a million copies in a week, their popularity was skyrocketing to unprecedented heights where mainstream news sources like TIME Magazine wanted in on the hype. Believe it or not, we haven't dabbled in many 1993 shows on this podcast. That's why this entire month is dedicated to the tour year where we'll talk about some great shows that may get overlooked next to the all-timers such as Indio, Mudfest and others. This episode will take us to Ed's hometown in San Diego for the second of a two night stint that displayed the power and authenticity of the band in their sophomore year. A lot of the conversation here will be about Dave A and how comfortable he felt behind the kit during this time period. His heavy, bombastic style brought even more power and ferocity to the songs that had already claimed that identity. But he also made a song such as Release feel like a triumphant, exhilarating live experience that elevated every band member to match his intensity. The big story of this show comes within one of the most polished improv performances they'd ever attempt with a song that is known as Hold Me. We'll get into a deep discussion on how locked in the band was at this time that they were able to make these improvs feel like well rehearsed songs that could've been confused as b-sides. Porch and Once are also major highlights of this show to tune in for. Our Gear Guru segments this week feature Javier getting into whether Stone is using a Fuzz Pedal on Jeremy, how electric guitar works for a song like Small Town and what made the improv come all together to feel complete. Javier has a brand new single out called La Distancia under the artist name Panamericana. You can find the song on Apple Music and Spotify streaming platforms. Please go check it out! Wed, 08 Nov 2023 - 1h 32min - 318 - Episode 257: Charlottesville, VA - 10/29/2013
One of the many reasons of how Pearl Jam has developed such a large following within their fanbase traveling near and far to their shows is that every single show is going to offer you something completely different than their last. Nearly everyone has a wish list of songs that they think they'll never hear live, but keep hope alive that some day they will finally be in the building on the night they play one. Those rarities are cherished by this community, and if you happen to be at the right show at the right time, you may see multiple rare tracks that they may not play on the rest of the tour. Charlottesville 2013 was that kind of show. With 3 dates left before the end of the east coast run that year, the band unloaded on songs from all different eras that automatically made this one of the most talked about shows of the year. The sets in 2013 were starting to grow longer without the appearance of an opener. Most shows pushed the 3-hour mark and delved into well beyond 30 songs played for each individual night. Charlottesville had a total of 35 songs that were played, and among the big talking points were songs like In My Tree, Grievance, Glorified G, Big Wave, Sad and the first appearance of Thumbing My Way since 2006. Those six performances alone created enough talking points for this to be recognized perhaps under the "instant classic" moniker. But there are many discussions to be had in this episode that could spell some of those pre-conceived notions. With 19 songs bunched in to a main set that lasted an hour and 25 minutes, there will be a lot of discussion here on how some of the flow and pacing felt a little bit off when attempting this enormous task. We'll discuss how that compares to the more recent era where there are less songs played, but more time to give each one it's moment to shine in a more methodical way. We'll hear from you guys on what type of Pearl Jam shows that you prefer to see, and we'll get three excellent segments from the Gear Guru this week - Stone's fingerpicking on Release, Mike using a monstrous Gretsch guitar on Glorified G, and he'll dig into why this version of Whipping desperately needed to be aborted towards the end. Wed, 01 Nov 2023 - 1h 53min - 317 - Episode 256: Hartford, CT - 10/25/2013
This episode has been a long time coming. On its 10th anniversary, we are covering an absolute classic Pearl Jam show from Hartford, Connecticut in 2013. Randy has talked a lot about this show in the past, and this episode will be a platform for him to share his memories of his experience, and perhaps get up on a soapbox a little bit. This show is living proof that this small city in Connecticut is one of the best Pearl Jam crowds you can find. We'll talk about that extensively throughout the episode, but what you'll witness is every time the crowd cheers, Ed is completely beside himself. One massive standing ovation after Last Exit perfectly set the tone for what this night would end up being. While the crowd certainly is the #1 theme, it does share the #1 spot with the other important theme from this show. Less than a year after the fatal tragedy happened at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, CT, this was Ed's first moment to be able to react publicly to what had took place. After meeting with fathers of kids who were killed earlier that day, he gave an impassioned speech standing up for gun control and pleading the crowd to continue being loud about it. Songs like Long Road and Come Back reflect the mood of this theme. Another theme that derives from Hartford shows is over one song that has connected the band to the city since 2010. What was once an OTOTO (one time, one time only) performance was now being brought back for a second time - the Van Halen rocker Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. This song will set up a bit of a contentious discussion in this episode about the idea of them playing it. On one side you'll hear praise for the band giving this city some special love for making it a theme, on the other side you'll notice pushback for covering a band they have no business covering. And if you enjoy that conversation, you'll probably love the segue into Got Some as well. Gear Guru segments this week will focus on Lighting Bolt era songs Let The Records Play and Yellow Moon, as well as a little Jeff Ament talk focusing on his fretless bass from Alone. Wed, 25 Oct 2023 - 2h 01min - 316 - Episode 255: Slim's - 5/13/1993
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam's sophomore record, Vs., in this episode we're going back to where it all started. In the spring of 1993, the band set out to record the new record in the Northern California town of San Rafael. The process took two months to lay down all the tracks. At the end of the session, a surprise show was planned under the moniker of the David J. Gunn Band at a small San Francisco area venue called Slim's. It was on this night that the 500+ in attendance, both indoors and out, witnessed the dawning of the Vs. era. Nearly everything off of the album debuted, plus other songs that would end up being Lost Dogs or on Vitalogy. Animal, Go, Blood, Dissident, W.M.A., Rats, Rearviewmirror appeared for the first time in their infant stages, alongside Whipping and a little Bad Radio song titled Better Man. Hard To Imagine also claimed it's live debuted after being noodled and an improv all throughout the 1992 tour. An abridged version of Dirty Frank was played upon request, as was Alone that was also considered a deep cut by this point. While the beloved songs from Ten were played, they felt like an afterthought with all of the new material showcased. This is considered to be the first true surprise show in the history of the band, and with that came stories of how this show was almost canceled on multiple occasions and may not have happened if Cyndi Lauper was still set to perform that night. To give us the historical context of this show, we've invited on a Pearl Jam community legend, Kathy Davis, who watched this show from an open window. If you don't know Kathy, you should. She was a band archivist going all the way back to this era in 1993 putting together her zine called Footsteps. She'd later help take over with Two Feet Thick after Five Horizons parted ways. Her retelling of the night and how it all came about is more than enough reason to listen to this episode! Wed, 18 Oct 2023 - 2h 01min - 315 - Episode 254: Ohana Encore - 10/2/2021
After a long year and a half battle of the world in a lockdown due to Covid-19, concerts were starting to slowly trickle back in by the end of 2021. Pearl Jam had missed their big opportunity to showcase Gigaton on a promotional tour in 2020, so when the opportunity to play four festival shows arose, with careful consideration they finally decided to kick off the new era. Three of the four shows took place at Eddie Vedder's curated Ohana Festival, which was originally set for one date until a second weekend was added with Pearl Jam headlining both nights. The show we're covering here is the final night of this run, which means it was a massive celebration with the band, the fans and all of the artists and friends that attended. Celebration is the theme for this night as every song felt like it had an injection of fun and enthusiasm. There wasn't a single low energy song featured on the set, and knowing it was the last night, they brought their a-game to create some memorable moments, especially Michael F. McCready (I'll leave it to you to figure out what the "F" stands for). Songs like Even Flow and Black had explosive elements to them, even more so than usual, while some highlights came as a complete surprise. For those who know the personalities on this podcast, you may be aware that there is one song on the rarer side that has followed Randy around throughout the years - All Night. For those dying to hear an answer on this, you'll be fulfilled and shocked by the conversation brought to the table. But the big highlight of the night came from Rockin' In The Free World where the wildest cast of characters (Taylor Hawkins, Brandi Carlile, Sleater-Kinney, Kelly Slater, John McEnroe, Patti Smith, Tim Robbins, Randy Johnson among others) throw a big time party where not one person stays six feet away from another. This week we invite our friend and Patron, Dakota Duvall, to the show to get his request fulfilled and tell his story about why he chose this show to get covered. And our Gear Guru segments for this week will focus on Quick Escape, Seven O'Clock and Life Wasted. Wed, 11 Oct 2023 - 1h 41min - 314 - Pearl Jam Fan Profile - Joaquin Zihuatanejo
One of the most special parts of a Pearl Jam show is when Ed and the band can recognize a story submitted by a local area fan and share it with the crowd. On the 2023 tour, we saw our fair share of those, ranging from requested songs to stories of heartbreak and loss. In what was one of the most memorable moments of the year, Ed received and read a poem from the poet laureate of Dallas about how influential the band had been to keeping him alive amidst family struggles and homelessness - one of the most emotional stories ever told at a Pearl Jam show. We're excited to welcome Joaquin Zihuatanejo onto the show to talk about how this improbable moment went down! He'll talk about how the moment almost never happened due to prior work commitments, and how a crazy connection within the Pearl Jam camp got his writing to the band. What turned from a night in the 200s section to a special moment in the history of this band is all documented in a wonderful conversation here. Check it out, and get the first hand knowledge how Joaquin's night went down! Thu, 05 Oct 2023 - 1h 00min - 313 - Episode 253: Winnipeg, MB, CAN - 9/8/2005
In 2005, Pearl Jam dedicated the month of September to tour across an area they've never touched from coast to coast - the great plains and prairies of Canada. 17 shows over 24 days led to some absolute classics from this band that may get forgotten over time, but that's part of why we're here is to keep the discussion alive! This show in Winnipeg that we're covering in this episode is a great example of a Canadian small town that never hosted Pearl Jam before this tour attempt, and the crowd ended up delivering big time. At the newly built arena that would later become the home of the reformed Winnipeg Jets, Pearl Jam happened to draw the largest capacity audience for the one year since it had been built. From the bootleg, you can tell that there isn't a single seat empty in the building. That led the band to pull out some surprises that you almost never get to see at normal shows, such as Better Man opening the night, Blood closing encore 1 after Alive, and Indifference opening the second encore. With plenty of Neil Young references and a wonderful moment where a fan got her request for Smile granted, nearly every song has their moment in the sun at this show. Lest we forget, a little flip phone call during Daughter that leads to a fun moment. Not only will we dig into the strength of the crowd here, but we'll have the Gear Guru step in and do a little breakdown on Stone during Not For You and Do The Evolution, and he'll also breakdown why Mike's modem was running at the end of Blood. Wed, 04 Oct 2023 - 1h 40min - 312 - Episode 252: Prague, CZ - 7/1/2018
With the 2023 tour in our rearviewmirror, we're pushing forward back as this episode features a great show from Prague at the end of the Lightning Bolt tour run. Seeing as we are now officially finished with the Gigaton run, we thought it would be a good idea to take both of these tour years and see how they compared before embarking on a new era. It's interesting to look at side by side because at the show in Prague, the crowd was treated to many crowd favorite rarities such as Tremor Christ, Brain Of J., Love Boat Captain and Help Help. That's not far off from what we were just treated to! Of course the sets were a little longer in 2018, but we're going to get into why certain things have needed to be adjusted as the band gets older. While people may remember 2018 for the Home/Away shows, the massive show in Rome or even the London make-up show, this Prague show should be right up there when people discuss the best of this year. The crowd was lively on big time favorites such as Corduroy and Do The Evolution, which means they were treated to some well deserved surprises later in the set. Two big highlights of this show include a version of Love Boat Captain that features an incredible jam/improv intro, and a tandem of The Beatles Help! transitioning into Riot Act deep cut Help Help. We'll also have a little Prague history for you that we'll discuss! Thanks go out to Ross Strothers for requesting this episode, you'll get to hear his story told. And the Gear Guru segments this week feature a discussion on Stone's tone during Tremor Christ and other songs, and Mike using a very unique pedal that created a sound in songs like Even Flow and Black that we didn't get to see presented in 2023. Wed, 27 Sep 2023 - 1h 38min - 311 - Episode 251: Lawrence, KS - 5/2/1992
With a busy weekend covering the final three Pearl Jam shows of the 2023 tour, we've decided to make this week's episode a little bit on the shorter side so we could focus our attention on the Texas shows rather than spend nights heavily editing. So to do that, we had to go back to an era that had significantly smaller sets. Which is why we chose a show from the University of Kansas campus that took place as Pearl Jam was firmly on the rise back in May of 1992. With this little gathering marketed as "Day On The Hill" by the University, they paid the band $3,000 to play this show. It was booked back in January of 1992 when Alive was their only song in circulation, but as the next five months rolled around, no one in Lawrence, Kansas expected this show to be this huge. 18,000 students took over the little outdoor park venue as the band continued their meteoric ascension. Now it's pretty clear that what was documented from this day is actually an incomplete show. We'll get into the details of all that in the episode, but what we do get to see is your classic 1992 affair - the band bouncing around the stage at high energy, crowd surfers galore, songs played at full intensity and of course, stage climbing antics from one Eddie Vedder. The scene is very similar to one set a few months later at home in Seattle for the legendary Drop In The Park show. When Porch breaks into it's solo, Ed assesses the situation and climbs all the way up to the top of the stage to go swinging. It's always a sight to behold, and we'll break down every step of the journey. We'll also go through a summary of the tour up to the point of recording, and for those of you who like to study up beforehand, we release our entire rest of the year episode schedule for 2023! But most importantly, our Gear Guru is back! Javier will check in on versions of Why Go and Porch from this day. Wed, 20 Sep 2023 - 1h 20min - 310 - Episode 250: Austin, TX - 9/16/1995
As the 2023 tour continues to move from north to south, we're gonna get you prepared for the Austin shows by covering the last non-festival show that was played in the Texas capital way back in 1995. This was a make-up show for the postponed date that stemmed from Ed's bout of food poisoning back at the Golden Gate Park show. This show in Austin had it's own fair share of controversies, including a set time change that threw a large portion of the fans off that thought that 7pm was the start to the show. This barnburner of a set will have two major talking points - Mike and Jack. Jack Irons was clearly in a groove after nine months of playing and traveling with the band, and while not every song had been fully polished just yet, you can see what spots Jack was having a major influence on and where he thrived the most. Mike on the other hand had numerous moments where his guitar solos shot out of the amps like a cannon on fire. We're gonna gush over Mike's presence on songs such as Go, Animal, Corduroy, Why Go, Even Flow, State Of Love And Trust, Immortality, Black and Porch. No shortage of conversation there! We'll kick off the episode addressing the recent Indianapolis show postponement and what this may mean for the rest of the 2023 tour. Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 3h 00min - 308 - Episode 248: Birmingham, AL - 9/3/1998
It's tour time! We've been hyping it up for the last few months, and this episode is the last before the 2023 tour kicks off! We'll begin the episode talking about the possibilities of what may happen and whether or not there are new songs tossed into the mix. For up to date tour instant reaction episodes, please direct to our Patreon where that content can be found - http://patreon.com/liveon4legs But let's not bury this excellent show out of Alabama! Highly regarded as one of the best sounding bootlegs of 1998, it's a great show to have available in this high of quality. Having never been to this part of the deep south before, the band puts together an inspired performance where we argue the difficulty of choosing an MVP between Ed, Mike and Matt. Stellar performances here. We'll spend some time breaking down the laser show eminating from the Porch solo, a very aggressive Immortality, Footsteps in an unusual spot played middle of the set, and a powerful Given To Fly that sounds like a 2003 or 2006 version rather than 1998. But the moment that everyone will remember from this show is the Dueling Banjos intro leading way to Corduroy. Was it a little too on the nose for the location? Sad to say that we won't be hearing from Javier this week who needed to rest before making his way to St. Paul. But we do have Patrick and Brian from Hallucinogenic Recipe who will take a glimpse into the background behind this bootleg, and the switchover from cassette to CD-R that took place in the trader circuit during this year. Wed, 30 Aug 2023 - 1h 34min - 307 - Episode 247: Pittsburgh, PA - 8/25/1998
It's time for our third trip to the Steel City this year! After covering 2000 and 2003 in the spring, we're going to focus on the tour year that preceded those shows in 1998. Want to hear something kind of shocking? This was their first show in Pennsylvania since Lollapalooza 1992! With the 1994 and 1996 tours that traveled through the northeast, it's kind of insane that they never hit Pittsburgh or Philadelphia during that time frame. But they make it up to all of yinz by putting together an energetic show where Ed's intensity is all full force. And we get the live debut of No Way! With the 2023 tour now a week away, we'll spend some time discussing some of our thoughts about what could go down, suggesting that perhaps the Metallica method that was popularized this year may be an influence. But tying that into Pittsburgh, what's great about this show is that we have a soundcheck in our possession. We're discussing it at the right time because listening to it and hearing the rain and thunder rumbles makes you a little bit homesick for the live Pearl Jam atmosphere. Especially when Ed performs Throw Your Arms Around Me in the pre-set. The rest of the show features classic versions of songs like Black and Do The Evolution, as well as a Rearviewmirror that has a bridge unlike anything we've seen in a long time. We'll also talk about an Easter Egg from this show that's made the rounds over the years featuring Ed in a different perspective. Gear Guru segments this week will focus on Stone's vibrant solo on Brain Of J, Mike's energy on Alive and a glimpse into why No Way may have never worked out live as well as you'd might think. Wed, 23 Aug 2023 - 1h 36min - 306 - Episode 246: Barrie, ONT, CA - 8/22/1998
We've done extensive coverage of the 2003 Riot Act tour celebrating the 20th anniversary this year. Now it's time to celebrate the anniversary of another major tour in Pearl Jam history - 1998! We kick off a 3-episode Yield tour stretch with an outdoor festival show that took place in Barrie, right outside of Toronto. With Cheap Trick as the supporting act on tour at this time, there are multiple instances where the band gives a subtle nod to their rock heroes, including Mike using Rick Nielson's guitar for State Of Love And Trust. Our Patron Alex Sink joins us for this episode to tell his story of what went down that day. For a bootleg that had a tough time capturing the identity of the show and with no visual aides available, Alex is able to take us back to what that scene was like. A rowdy crowd of over 30,000 created dirt clouds and mud as the mosh pits were in full force on this one. And the band was clearly in a good mood after watching Cheap Trick on the side stage. Ed makes multiple mentions of how great this crowd was, and even addressed some of the craziest fans he had ever seen in the parking lot during an extended version of Leatherman. We also have the world debut of the Do The Evolution music video that happens at this show with the band performing while the images are shown on a screen behind them. If you love Matt Cameron, this may be the episode for you! Get ready for five moments that we've dubbed the 'filthy fills' that will be featured throughout this show! Our Gear Guru segments will featured Javier talking about the lack of overdrive pedal from this tour and how Mike would make adjustments on Even Flow and Yellow Ledbetter, and he'll also discuss Mike's using Rick Nielson's guitar during State Of Love And Trust. Wed, 16 Aug 2023 - 1h 37min - 305 - Episode 245: Chicago, IL - 8/23/2009
We are less than a month away from seeing Pearl Jam take the stage for nine shows in September, and there's possibly no bigger stage than the one set for Ed's hometown of Chicago. As Wrigley Field has dominated the tour runs for the last ten years, the band is finally returning to the United Center for the first time since 2009, which is the show we'll be digging into in this episode. It was right before the Backspacer record came out, and while not every song had been released yet, it was somewhat of a showcase for songs such as The Fixer, Got Some and Supersonic. With Randy in attendance for the night two of this back to back, he gives some insight as to what was going on this weekend and some of the buzz coming out of night one. As all Chicago shows are, this is a true homecoming for Ed where he will reference fond memories of his youth on multiple occasions. He ties it in nicely when classic Who songs Love Reign O'er Me and The Real Me are played due to spending lots of cold nights listening to them on his walkman waiting for the L train. He'll also tie in a story about some of his earliest loves of music coming in the form of listening to Motown and idolizing Michael Jackson, who had died that summer. There is a nice dedication to Michael during Ed's rendition of Needle and the Damage Done, and a version of Rats featuring a short intro tease of the Michael Jackson song that's referenced at the end, Ben. And of course, he'll give nod to the Bulls championship banners in the rafters. As Ed would deem this show to be an emotional ride from the very beginning, we'll get to hear those kind of songs such as Long Road, Come Back and Man Of The Hour utilized in this set. Many thanks to Patron Andy Lore who requested this show! Our Gear Guru segments this week will get into a buzzy Mike solo on Sad, how Given To Fly and other songs guitar tone on this tour felt flat, and how Stone's rigged strumming was the backbone for a fantastic version of Love Reign O'er Me. Wed, 09 Aug 2023 - 1h 37min - 304 - Episode 244: Saratoga Springs, NY - 8/27/2000
Toga! Toga! We're heading to upstate New York to cover Pearl Jam's last show to date at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, aka SPAC. It's a widely popular venue, one in which jam bands such as Phish and Dave Matthews Band have frequented, and as Ed would mention in this show, it was an early Lollapalooza tour venue back in 1992 when they played alongside Soundgarden. Glad he kept the shirt. This show comes right off the heels of a major turning point from the Binaural tour - The Jones Beach shows. The legendary Daughter performance with the It's OK tag, forever enshrined on the Touring Band 2000 DVD, marked as a healing moment for the band during the toughest period in their history. This show getting off to a hot start was a sign that the band was starting to loosen up and learn how to have a little fun on stage again. Breakerfall, Whipping, Spin The Black Circle, Hail, Hail, Corduroy and In My Tree are the first six songs of the night, and they absolutely do not disappoint. Add in an experimental Rearviewmirror to close the main set and a combination of Black/Yellow Ledbetter to this night, there are a lot of signature moments that make this show stand out. Oh yeah, and the nudist lava lamp inventor... him too. We'll hear stories from our Patron, Andrew Famulare, as well as Patrick and Brian from Hallucinogenic Recipe who were both at this show in the same section, but didn't know each other at the time. They'll share their hilarious memory from this show from both perspectives. And our Gear Guru segments this week look into Stone's Rickenbacker impact on Breakerfall, an interesting octave change in the Spin The Black Circle chorus, and why the combo of Black and Ledbetter worked so well, including love for the Nobody's Fault But Mine Led Zepplin tag. Wed, 02 Aug 2023 - 1h 38min - 303 - Episode 243: London, UK - 6/18/2007
In this episode, Randy and John go where this podcast has (almost) never gone before... to the 2007 tour! While we covered Vic Theater in this podcast's infancy, we've never done the full dive into what's sort of a forgotten year in Pearl Jam history. Outside of the Vic and the Lollapalooza Chicago show, there were only 12 shows played on a European run that included mostly festival dates. The show we cover here happened in London, and was the first arena show there since 2000. Thank you to friend and Patreon, Simon Pountney, for requesting this! This show took place in the aftermath of a massive tour supporting the Self Titled record, featuring many songs from the album that don't get heard often today. We'll go in depth on Marker In The Sand, Parachutes, Comatose as some of the highlights from this night. We'll also address how in this era, the band turned up the RPMs and started playing many of their songs faster than usual. We'll talk about where it benefits and suffers inside this setlist. A show with a Ten Club heavy presence on the floor leads to a set chock full of fan favorites leaving songs like Even Flow, Black, Jeremy, Better Man, Daughter, Rearviewmirror and Corduroy off the setlist entirely. For our question of the week, we had something unique happen in this show where World Wide Suicide was played in the usual Alive spot. We asked you guys what other songs you thought would work well in that role before Rockin' In The Free World. And for the Gear Guru, it's time for some Javocado! Javier breaks down a trio of songs from the record including Comatose, Marker In The Sand and Inside Job. Wed, 26 Jul 2023 - 1h 34min - 302 - Episode 242: London, ONT, CAN - 7/16/2013
As we say goodbye to reliving the 20th anniversary of the Riot Act tour, there are so many other Pearl Jam anniversaries that need to be celebrated this year. Believe it or not, it's been a full decade since the 2013 Lightning Bolt tour, as well as the release of the record. In July of that year, the band revealed their plans for their 10th studio album release nearly days before the two big North American summer shows - Wrigley Field and London, Ontario. We all know how big of a deal that Wrigley show was. It was the first ballpark show of it's kind, heavy storms caused a two and a half hour delay leading to a show that didn't end until 2 am, and Bugs was played. Because of the hype leading up to Wrigley, the London show that preceded it became a bit of an after thought. For those unfamiliar, we'll tackle why this show deserves more love and appreciation from this fanbase that may have forgotten about it in the wake of Wrigley. Like Wrigley, this is a show that was never released as an official bootleg. So most of the stories and moments that are relived come directly from the less than 10,000 fans who were there in attendance in this intimate venue. We're lucky to be joined by two in this episode as Patron, Tim Fortescue, hops on to discuss why he requested this show, and filling in for John this week is Hallucinogenic Recipe co-host, Patrick Boegel, who also has great memories from this. A lot of the discussion here will come from this being the true kickoff to the new era, with a brand new rig, stage and lighting set up, setlist structure and new takes on old songs. It was the beginning of the nightly three song slow burn openers that came off as a massive surprise when the rarely opened with Present Tense kicked off this night. It was also the start of the slowburn encore in a way too, which was the most anticipated part of the set featuring some of the rarest songs in the catalog, IE: Parachutes and Man Of The Hour at this show. We'll also get to talking about the live debut of Mind Your Manners, a London Calling tease, amazing transitions between songs such as Modern Girl into Black, Dundas hookers on crack and experimental takes on two fan favorites - one that worked in Corduroy, and one that didn't in Daughter. As a bonus, we'll also ponder why Canadian hotels only have Garfield cartoons featured on their TVs. Our Gear Guru segments this week focus on the brand new rig set-up for 2013, the defining sound of Mind Your Manners and Alone featuring Mike's usage of a slide pick. Wed, 19 Jul 2023 - 1h 55min - 301 - Episode 241: Mansfield, MA - 7/11/2003
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the big one. After two weeks of hype, we have now reached the third night of the Mansfield Experiment. Anybody who was there remembers it clearly - getting to the venue early for Pearl Jam to hit the stage around 5:30, witnessing them in the daylight, wanting to stand and cheer while the band eases in with an acoustic pre-set. It is almost inarguable that this show is the most important and celebrated within the history of this band, finishing a 3-night stand where a total of 97 unique songs were played. This show would feature 45 of those songs, the most that have ever been crammed into one Pearl Jam show to date. To accomplish this feet, they had to get creative due to strict curfews in the venue. so they decided to begin the night as their own opener to play a seated 12-song acoustic set to those lucky enough to arrive early. The set is one for the ages. Classic songs meant for the setting such as Long Road and Footsteps thrived and soared throughout the atmosphere, while extreme rarities such as All Those Yesterdays and Drifting are tossed in there to delight the collectors in the audience. While the opening set is the big story here, the band busted out 33 more songs on this night that included old songs, new songs, common and rare songs, songs being reintroduced and songs packaged together in clever fashion. We'll break down all of it in one of the longest episodes in the modern era of this podcast! Once again, thanks to everyone who sent in their stories, we'll share the final batch of them in this episode. Our Gear Guru segments this week will give you an overview of the acoustic set, discuss the strange tuning on Faithfull and break down a one of a kind version of Why Go featuring a riffy guitar intro. Wed, 12 Jul 2023 - 2h 37min - 300 - Episode 240: Mansfield, MA - 7/3/2003
Continuing onward with our big summer series, this episode focuses on the second night of Pearl Jam's Mansfield Experiment. With the first night under their belt and the crowd coming into the show aware of the premise, the excitement was at an all-time high. While night 1 was a great introduction to the idea, this show's crowd is up for all of the surprises and answers when called upon for the big call and response moments. While there may be no acoustic set like night 3, the energy at this show was palpable, even though Ed came off a bit grumpy due to a lack of sleep the night prior. Although there were a few rarities spliced in to the night before, this show featured a few songs that you almost never heard at Pearl Jam shows during that era. The most eye opening one was Low Light. Of course Low Light has become a common staple of Pearl Jam sets in recent history, but coming into this show it had only been played one other time at the 2001 Bridge School show. We'll spend time breaking down how this turned into a classic song over time, and some of the pieces that aren't found in recent versions. Other big performances that we'll dive into are Release, Animal, Insignificance, Love Boat Captain, Rival, Rearviewmirror and amazing crowd responses on both Alive and Baba O'Riley. Once again, thank you to everyone who sent in their stories. We'll read another batch of them in the episode. And our Gear Guru segments will focus on the emergence of Low Light, the 2003 rendition of I Am A Patriot and a Jeff Ament driven Rearviewmirror. Wed, 05 Jul 2023 - 1h 46min - 299 - Episode 239: Mansfield, MA - 7/2/2003
Ladies and gentlemen of the Pearl Jam universe, it's here! Since the beginning of the year, we've been teasing this 10-episode recap of the 20th anniversary of the 2003 Riot Act tour, featuring the ultimate finale - all three shows from the Mansfield Experiment! To anyone who has never heard of this before, The Experiment was the band's opportunity with three nights scheduled just outside Boston to play nearly every song they knew without repeating anything. This led to three monster sets with the unpredictability of a normal Pearl Jam set heightened to a new extreme. We're gonna focus on the first night's setlist in this episode and spend time talking about how the idea for the experiment all came to be. The challenge of playing 97 different songs in the span of three nights might seem exciting to all of us, but for the band, it was a herculean task that came with some uncertainty. While some of the big setlist staples are tossed into this show like Go, Save You, I Am Mine, Even Flow and Porch, they had to balance all of that out with the lesser played material with songs like Get Right, Help Help, Evacuation and for the time, Smile injected into the set. All three shows have different identities, but all of the excitement from the fans who had heard the rumors gives this show an air of something special that would eventually turn into one of the most legendary runs in the history of Pearl Jam. Thank you to everyone for writing in these past few weeks and sharing your stories. We'll tell a few of them in this episode and spread the rest throughout the following two. Three Gear Guru segments this week will dig into a chaotic ending on Go, the 2003 alternate rendition of In My Tree and the rarely played Evacuation. Wed, 28 Jun 2023 - 1h 53min - 298 - Episode 238: East Troy, WI - 6/26/1998
Alpine Valley has been a staple of the Pearl Jam touring route going all the way back to Lollapalooza in 1992. In the seven instances in which they've played there, there's no lack of unforgettable shows and unforgettable moments. A few of the shows even have monikers that they go by such as PJ20, when they played there for their 20th anniversary, and the Ice Bowl in 2000 where they played a full show in freezing cold weather. In this episode, we're gonna go back to 25 years ago where they played their first headlining gig in East Troy. To help us tell the story, we've enlisted our Patron Aaron Redmon who requested this show. This was very early in Matt Cameron's tenure with the band, and there are some things that we'll hear out of Matt that show that he was still getting adjusted to being on tour with them. Songs like Do The Evolution and Brain Of J feature a harder edge than we're accustomed to today. This show will feature technical difficulties, botched lyrics and early indications that certain songs were ready to become massive crowd friendly moments. The two big moments to look out for are Black with a highly intense We Belong Together tag and Alive with an improv within the solo. With Alpine Valley being such a historic venue, we asked you to share your favorite moments from seeing shows there, which we'll share during our question of the week segment. And our Gear Guru segments this week will feature Mike's clean guitar sound on Even Flow, well deserved love for Jeff Ament and a tag of Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun at the end of Yellow Ledbetter. Wed, 21 Jun 2023 - 1h 29min - 297 - Episode 237: Bonner Springs, KS - 6/12/2003
When you think about some of the more memorable performances in the history of Pearl Jam, a lot of them have a key factor in common. They develop from spontaneous moments that happen within the song. Fan interactions especially can help turn a performance of a song played over 500 times into an unforgettable moment. One of the other spontaneous facets that happens at Bonner Springs in 2003 is how the weather impacts the show. To open this night, the band gets acquainted with the crowd by playing Release under a sky of a torrential downpour of rain. Quickly after the "oh dear dad..." lyric, there is a bolt of lightning in the background in which the crowd audibly reacts to. As Ed is singing one of his autobiographical masterpieces, he looks up to the sky and says "hi dad". It's a moment forever etched into this band's legacy, and we'll talk about it in full detail during the rundown of this show. This show was an easy decision to cover during our continued run of 2003 show, but it was made easier due to the request sent in from our Patron, Chris Bigelow. Check out his story in the episode. After the big moment, we'll go over how the rest of the set fared and talk about a few Riot Act songs we have yet to cover on this run - Get Right and Help Help. There is a big what-if in this set - a written encore setlist of 16 song choices with two songs that could've potentially made their return after almost a decade of not being played. Listen in to find out what those songs were! We'll read your answers for question of the week which asked about some of your favorite concert memories in the rain, and our Gear Guru segment will focus on Mike's pedals from Immortality and how the country twang sound from Off He Goes is created. Wed, 14 Jun 2023 - 1h 32min - 296 - Episode 236: Dallas, TX - 6/9/2003
We're back to our 20th anniversary celebration of Pearl Jam's Riot Act tour! Due to upcoming events in September, we have selected to cover the Dallas show from 2003 to give all of you headed there a little bit of history on what's happened there in the past. This show is mostly known for being the first official time that Alive was used as an opener, and we'll spend a lot of time discussing this version in contrast to the only other time they've opened with it in Newcastle, Australia. Speaking of firsts, there is a tag of an original song that we hear off of Daughter that hasn't happened since this date! On the second leg of this tour, Pearl Jam was starting to get a little creative in their setlists. We all know about the Mansfield Experiment and how the trio of shows featured nearly every song in their catalog. There's also the tour closer in Holmdel which utilized two songs from every album in chronological order. John brings up a theory about this setlist that he thought may have been Ed's original idea for this set, but was obviously aborted somewhere down the line. Do you agree with his theory? The other big conversation here will be about how Blood was being utilized back on this tour. We'll discuss whether it makes any sense to play Blood in the middle of the set and how that factor may have done a little harm to this show. The question of the week this week focuses on the Daughter moment. We'll read your answers on what you'd think would be great songs to use as tags off of it. And our Gear Guru segments this week will focus on 1/2 Full, Green Disease and Jeremy. Wed, 07 Jun 2023 - 1h 33min - 295 - Episode 235: Universal City, CA - 10/1/2009
When you think of 2009, immediately the first thing that comes to everyone's minds is those four Philadelphia shows that closed down The Spectrum. But people may forget that this wasn't the only four-night stint that they had in one building during this tour year. The 6,000+ capacity Gibson Amphitheatre located in Universal Studios in Los Angeles also played host to four Pearl Jam shows. Not four in a row like Philly, but the shows invited a bit more of an intimate experience. We'll talk about the two sets of shows and how one dominates the conversation over the other, but we'll also address a misconception that people seem to have due to how The Spectrum shows went down. We thank our Patron, Jason Weiss, for selecting this show as his episode request, and we'll share his story here. This is a Backspacer era tour, which meant that eight of the eleven songs were played. Coming off the heels of our contentious takes on Ole, we'll go off on another contentious song this week in Johnny Guitar, which has been known to be a bit divisive as well. If you join us for the Johnny talk, then you gotta stay for the conversations on Rearviewmirror, Alive, Red Mosquito featuring Ben Harper on a flat top steel guitar, and a spontaneous Lukin which included a string quartet accompanyment. We'll read you Question of the Week answers where we asked about what Backspacer songs that you'd like to see come back on the 2023 tour, and the Gear Guru segments will focus on Amongst The Waves, Red Mosquito and McCready's electric Star-Spangled Banner. Wed, 31 May 2023 - 1h 35min - 294 - Pickin' On Pearl Jam w/ Iron Horse
Earlier this month, bluegrass cover band, Iron Horse, famed for their covers of bands such as Metallica, Guns 'N Roses, Nirvana and many more, released an album complete with 12 renditions of popular Pearl Jam songs. All four members - Tony (mandolin), Vance (guitar), Andy (banjo) and Ricky (bass) join us to chat about the making of the record. We'll ask them what went into the decision of selecting Pearl Jam material, how they decided what songs to pick, their previous intake of Pearl Jam and how challenging the process was to transition their songs into bluegrass. It's a great conversation with insight into the bluegrass world and how it's able to mix within other genres of music. Fri, 26 May 2023 - 39min - 293 - Episode 234: Santiago, CHL - 11/16/2011
Let's head down to South America for this episode where the crowds show up in massive numbers and bring their powerful voices along with them. We have a special one here for you as we're joined by our 5th leg, the Gear Guru Javier Hervas, for the entire episode. As you may have heard in recent episodes, Javier is our expert musician who joins in for a few segments per show to discuss some of the things you hear in songs and how the band creates the sound you're witnessing. He'll break down all of those pieces for an entire set here, including why 2011 is an important year for developing the tone that is still used in current shows. As this was a show he attended in his homeland of Chile, the Guru will pull double duty talking about both the sound experience as well as his personal perspective and memories from the show. We'll talk about Unthought Known being an usual opener getting the nod to kick things off, a wild crowd who would not adhere to Ed's 'three steps back' request and full breakdown on some of the best highlights of the night, including amazing versions of Black and Rearviewmirror. Javier will answer your questions for him this week about gear that they've used on tours and what makes certain songs work, and we'll also go into heavy discussion on the song Olé. It's our first time covering the song since episode 13, which means a full breakdown on why this could be Pearl Jam's worst song was a necessary discussion! Wed, 24 May 2023 - 1h 54min - 292 - Episode 233: Portland, OR - 5/17/1992
This episode, we rock Portland! May 17th is former drummer Dave Abbruzzese's birthday, so we decided to go back to the only show where he played with the band on this date from 1992. A lot of the conversation will be directed towards Dave and how well he was clicking with the band just less than a year since joining them. His bombastic, hard pounding style is in the forefront of this show, and we'll focus on songs like Oceans, Why Go and State Of Love And Trust that he's a standout on. This show is also the debut of Dave's first song he wrote for the band, Angel. Will we get to hear from Dave himself about the development of the song? You'll just have to tune in! We'll discuss the meteoric rise of the band during this time period. The show happened days after the first airing of MTV Unplugged and only a few weeks away from the iconic Pinkpop show, so their popularity was just on the verge of skyrocketing. This is also a great show for Mike McCready who is showing off his talents in songs such as Alive, Black, SOLAT and Porch, and we'll get to talk about some era-specific improvs as well. For the question of the week, we'll read your answers on what songs from the post-Dave A era that you'd think he would excel at playing, and our Gear Guru segments will talk about the overall raw sound of the band during this era, and touch up a little bit on channeling their influences during Porch. Wed, 17 May 2023 - 1h 30min - 291 - Episode 232: Camden, NJ - 9/14/2022
For the second week in a row, we're diving back into 2022 to discuss one of Randy's favorite shows he's ever been to that happened in Camden. Originally slated for Baltimore during what was going to be the 2020 run, the band making a return to the Philadelphia area meant that there were no punches going to be pulled, this was destined to be a monster set. Seeing that the city has had rich and historical significance within the 32 years of this band, there were many callbacks to other Philly shows, including the legendary JC Dobbs show in 1991. Nine of the ten songs from that show were played that night as the earliest eras of Pearl Jam dominated this set. A lot of this episode will focus around Randy's personal stories and why this was an important show to him. There were songs played on this night that were very high up on his wishlist. Ones that he'd seen before, but not in over a decade, and a few that he'd been chasing for just as long. We'll highlight the memories created from hearing songs like Hard To Imagine, Untitled/MFC and Inside Job that were incredibly powerful, experience making moments. We'll also go in depth on an explosive version of Retrograde as well as an excellent Not For You. A big story from this show was that Ed and the band invited All-In contest winners, Richie and Dermot Berg to the stage, after a full day of experiencing the preparation of what goes in to putting together a Pearl Jam show. Back last September, we invited the Berg's onto the podcast to tell their story. We'll relive a clip from that, but give the full episode that's available in our archives a listen because there's no lack of awesome information shared there. We'll read your answers for question of the week where we asked whether you preferred shows in an amphitheater or arena setting, and our Gear Guru segment this week will focus on Do The Evolution playing off of the song's original pace and Quick Escape's overall sound from the Gigaton tour. Wed, 10 May 2023 - 1h 53min - 290 - Episode 231: San Diego, CA - 5/3/2022
On the one-year anniversary of the 2022 tour's kickoff, we're taking a look back at the first makeup show for the postponed 2020 tour. It started in San Diego, CA, a place that has always been treated as a homecoming for Ed, who grew up there in his school-aged years. With family, friends and celebrities on hand to witness this event, the expectations and nerves were at an all-time high. But with that being said, the setlist was curated in a way that paid tribute to the ocean and local area which most of his early lyrics were written. There's a moment in this show that can be argued as one of the most emotional in the band's history. Ed makes a touching tribute to his brother before playing an incredibly powerful Long Road, but the tribute developed out of a dedication. Mike Cribier had written into the forums requesting that the band play In My Tree for his brother who tragically passed away back in 2014. Mike will join us on this episode to talk about his brother's accident and living his final days listening to the band nonstop, the shock when Ed mentioned him by name and the addition of In My Tree as a tag on Daughter. It's a can't miss conversation. Also in this show, the re-emergence of Gigaton songs that were played in a small sample size at the 2021 festival shows. Javier's Gear Guru segment this week will focus specifically on the equipment used on this tour and how the tone impacted new songs such as Retrograde and Seven O'Clock. And of course, we will go into a lengthy discussion about the reverse Mamasan and how playing it in San Diego may have been more special than any other instance where it's been performed. Wed, 03 May 2023 - 1h 40min - 289 - Episode 230: Pittsburgh, PA - 4/26/2003
After a week of big announcements in the Pearl Jam world, we're coming back this week with more of the Riot Act Tour! Why not?! We'll discuss a little bit of the upcoming September tour in the beginning of the episode, but if you want our full fledged analysis, please check out our reaction episode that came out earlier in the week. Pittsburgh is yet again on the docket for us, and the show from 2003 has plenty to talk about. Highlights galore in the main set as we'll chat about Small Town making what was a rare appearance as an opener at the time, a killer Corduroy, an amazing Immortality, a Wishlist with an extended improv and Even Flow which was on the patented McCready hot streak at the end of the April run. No lack of discussions for encore 1 as we get the very rare appearance of the scrambled Mamasan with Once appearing in the set prior to Alive. We'll continue conversation about the development of Alive's presence in 2003, and we'll go in-depth on the addition of the harmonica to Footsteps and what would later become a composition change in the song. Oh, and an 11-minute Rearviewmirror to end the encore ain't a bad thing at all! Also in this episode, we'll share our Patron Michael Fleisher's story about this show due to this being his request, we'll read you answers for question of the week that asked what some of your favorite shows were that had an abundance of a certain album's songs played, and our Gear Guru segment delves deeper into the Even Flow hot streak that took 2003 by storm. Mon, 24 Apr 2023 - 36min - 287 - Episode 229: Champaign, IL - 4/23/2003
Continuing on our run of Riot Act shows, this week takes us to the home of the Fighting Illini in Champaign, IL. For this show being on a college campus and therefore not allowing the sale of alcohol, the crowd did an excellent job bringing in the same kind of energy that you'd see from their in-state big city counterpart in Chicago. There are a handful of interesting things from this one. Do The Evolution is opened with for only the 4th time to this point, The Police cover, Driven To Tears, is played for the first time in 404 shows, and the first with a full band, and Ed will break out a ukulele for The Who song Blue Red Grey that Ed admits he stole for Soon Forget. Those two covers are part of this show's major theme which is a total of six covers played on this night. We'll discuss this in full detail and bring to the table how many covers are enough or too much to play in a set. You guys weighed in on that on social media and answered that exact question, so we'll read some of the answers that we got in the episode. Randy will talk a little bit about his upcoming Seattle trip for the last week of the MoPop exhibit and Record Store Day at Easy Street, and Javier's Gear Guru segment will focus on the juxtaposition of tones from Given To Fly and Nothingman played back to back on this night. Wed, 19 Apr 2023 - 1h 35min - 286 - Episode 228: West Palm Beach, FL - 4/11/2003
As is the theme for this year, we're back to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Riot Act tour for the next few weeks looking into some of Pearl Jam's most notable shows from April of 2003. We're talking about a show from West Palm Beach in this episode, which may not stand out to you on paper, but it features significant moments that define some of the themes for this entire tour year. Three themes are prominent from this era - 1) is of course the political aspect as the country had just gone to war with Iraq and Ed had put President Bush under scrutiny every night. 2) is the aftermath of Roskilde still in ways effecting this band three years later. And 3) is the return of old songs into the setlist that had been missing since the mid-90s. Thanks to our Patron Jared Schaffer for requesting this under the radar show. To hit all three of these topics specifically, one thing we'll discuss is a version of I Am A Patriot that was re-constructed strictly for this era and talk about the political nature involved, as well as Ed's invigorated speech that followed. We'll get deep into the topic of Love Boat Captain, which is featured as our brand new Evolution Series episode that will be out to Patreon very soon, to talk about how the incident at Roskilde helped them create music through the process of grieving. And on the subject of returning songs, this show's Glorified G performance was the first in 188 shows since November of 1996. We know that Ed sang a glorified version of I hate this song, but what band member here didn't seem to take it as seriously as the others on it's return? Other big highlights we'll discuss are Ed singing into a fan's cellphone during State Of Love And Trust, and an excellent call and response section of Daughter that led to a rare tag of Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out. We'll also answer this episode's question of the week which asked you all on social media what your favorite moments from the 2003 tour were, and our Gear Guru segments will discuss Stone's gear during this tour year and some of the effects that came from his guitar and Ed's vocals on Daughter. Wed, 12 Apr 2023 - 1h 33min - 285 - Episode 227: Bristow, VA - 5/13/2010
Most shows that go down as some of the greatest in Pearl Jam's history are usually remembered for having an excellent crowd feeding off their energy. There are some shows that may not get discussed as often due to a crowd not living up to expectations. Bristow, VA 2010 fits into that latter category. On a cold night in an outdoor amphitheater just outside of Washington DC, the band had a challenge at hand when difficulties connecting with the crowd let to a few rough performances. As professionals, they kept pushing and pushing, and the crowd slowly but surely started to give them the reaction they desired. It was all good in the end, but this week's episode talks about some of the struggles that this show presented. Right off the top of the show we'll run our interview with the host of The Better Band Podcast, Branden Palomo. After four years, his podcast that features a song-by-song run through of every Pearl Jam track will be going on hiatus. We bring him on to thank him for his work and get a little introspective on how his time with his show gave him a new outlook on this community. Our question of the week stems from the theme of the episode. We read your answers on whether or not you've ever been to a Pearl Jam show where the band and crowd had a difficult time connecting. In our Gear Guru segment this week, Javier discusses the change in set-up for the Backspacer tour, including how shows from this era sound way more condensed than they did in the past. Wed, 05 Apr 2023 - 1h 45min - 284 - Episode 226: Murfreesboro, TN - 3/26/1994
We're covering a Vs./Vitalogy era show this week from 1994 where both albums were nearly splitting play time live, but that's not the story we'll have for you here. Murfreesboro is legendary thanks to the appearance of one of the great song-writers of all-time, Steve Cropper. As part of the backing band, Booker T and The MGs, Cropper has played for a number of world renowned stars such as Otis Redding, John Lennon and even featured in the Blues Brothers band. After a 1993 tour where Pearl Jam opened for Neil Young with The MGs as his backing band, this led to an opportunity when they stopped by his home in Tennessee while touring. As a major surprise, he joined the band to perform Dock Of The Bay and Rockin' In The Free World. The Dock Of The Bay performance became one of the most sought after covers of theirs, and was a track on the popular No Fucking Messiah bootleg. This song and Cropper are the central focus of the episode, and we'll bring in Patrick and Brian from our sister podcast, Hallucinogenic Recipe, to discuss some of the history behind it. Outside of the legendary moment, this was one of many scorcher shows in the 1994 tour year. With Dave A coming near the end of his run with the band, this is a hard hitting show that opened the gates for the band to get out of control on multiple occasions. You'll hear mind blowing versions of Rearviewmirror, Go, Deep, Blood, Alive and Porch that we'll discuss in full breakdown. You answered the question of the week this week pertaining to the Dock Of The Bay appearance, which OTOTO type songs have been some of your favorites, and we'll read the answers on the show. Also, Javier will join us for our Gear Guru segment this week where he'll talk about Steve Cropper's unique guitar and sound that he was using in this show. Wed, 29 Mar 2023 - 1h 35min - 283 - Episode 225: Pittsburgh, PA - 9/5/2000
There are moments that happen on the Pearl Jam live stage where you understand that what's happening before you is a once in a lifetime moment. They've created a plethora of these moments in their 30+ years of touring, but that's what keeps the faithfull coming back. They come in all shapes and forms, but when a member of the crowd is invited on stage, you understand how big a deal it is. One of the earliest occasions of this happening was back in Pittsburgh in 2000. Ed noticed a woman with a white umbrella who had been following them from night to night, so he called her down to the stage to play her request for Wash that was written on the umbrella. We're excited to be joined by Amy in this episode so she can share her amazing story with you all! From how it all happened that night, to how she was able to see 100 shows by this time, these stories are can't miss! But the show itself is important in it's own right. It was the final show for the leg that occurred following the Roskilde tragedy. It was a bit of a tumultuous tour, but getting to play this show felt like a cathartic release for the band during this difficult time. The setlist is interesting for a couple of reasons. Due to a family emergency, opening band Sonic Youth couldn't perform as a full band so the remaining members played in the pre-set. Including a collaboration with Ed on Binaural rarity Parting Ways, and obscure Who b-side Naked Eye. Outside of the request for Wash, which hadn't been played in four years, the band pulled out another rarity in the encore with a version of I Got You by The Split Ends. Also on the pod this week, we'll read your answers for your favorite crowd interactive moments in the band's history. And we'll have three Gear Guru segments this week featuring thoughts on Sleight Of Hand, Rearviewmirror and Mankind. Thu, 23 Mar 2023 - 1h 45min - 282 - Episode 224: Antwerp, BEL - 8/30/2006
Out of around 1,200 shows played within the lexicon of Pearl Jam, there are inevitably some that are going to fall between the cracks. Those shows are mostly considered to be outside of the USA, just because the majority of active fans happen to be American. But there are hundreds of Australian, South American and European shows that over time get forgotten about mainly due to being fresh in people's heads. This episode features a show from 2006 out of Antwerp, Belgium that some may not consider to be better than average just from viewing the setlist, but is extremely important when looking back on their entire history of playing there. Thanks to Gunter (never thought you'd...) Habets for the off the radar request! This show is important because after 15 years it was their first in Belgium, but that was never the plan. They've had to make multiple cancelations back in 1992, and then again in 2000 as a show at the Rock Werchter Festival was slated to be the following show after Roskilde. Since the fans had been waiting a long time, and the band also waiting just as long, this felt like a massive show for everyone involved. The crowd is in top form coming up with creative ways to participate during songs like Small Town, Present Tense and especially Black. We'll also hear the band put forth inspired versions of songs like Big Wave, Hail, Hail and a version of Even Flow with a massive Matt Cameron solo befitting of the era. We'll also get the first appearance of Hunger Strike in three years, but was the Wolfmother frontman good enough to step into Eddie's shoes? Very debatable. Check out the answers for question of the week where we asked you all on social media what you thought was the best Avocado live track from the 2006 tour to see what songs ranked highest. And we'll also have three Gear Guru segments this week where Javier will discuss the overall 2006 sound in songs like Unemployable, Big Wave and Alive. Wed, 15 Mar 2023 - 1h 36min - 281 - Episode 223: Philadelphia, PA - 4/28/2016
The City Of Brotherly Love has been home to countless legendary Pearl Jam shows and moments throughout their history. As a matter of fact, the night after this show was the show in which they they played the album Ten in full. Which makes some people forget about night 1 from 2016 due to the magnitude of the Ten banner being raised. But what good are we if we can't give every great show a spotlight on this podcast? Because there is no reason why this one shouldn't be discussed as an all-time classic show, and we're here to prove that. With the knowledge of the album getting a run, this show was constructed so that Philly people would get to see some rarities, including three that haven't been played since that date - Gonna See My Friend, In The Moonlight and Education. But it didn't matter what they played, because the crowd was on fire the entire night. Right from the top when opening up with Once (including the Master/Slave intro that they would of course repeat again the following night), you knew that the crowd was going to make this a night to remember. We'll go in depth on Love Boat Captain, In My Tree, Jeremy, Crown Of Thorns and Crazy Mary where the crowd is at the top of their game. Also, how about a concert wedding up in Suite 225? This episode's question of the week is based off of the rare songs that we'll talk about. We came up with a system for scoring your rarest songs you've seen, and we'll calculate the numbers and share them with you! On that note, our Gear Guru, Javier, tackles a different approach to rare songs and discusses what the musical reason for not playing them is. Wed, 08 Mar 2023 - 1h 44min - 280 - Episode 222: Sendai, JP - 2/28/2003
It feels like whenever a band embarks out on a 'world tour', you can't coin that phrase unless you make a pitstop in Japan. While Pearl Jam has never done a true official world tour, they've had the opportunity to visit Japan twice. The first time was in 1995, and then they went back for five shows in 2003. This episode focuses on the Sendai show from the Riot Act tour. These shows are always interesting because the crowd is a lot more reserved than your every day average concert crowd. This factor mixed in with a venue that maxed out at 1,000 seats meant that the band could create more of an experimental setlist, moving songs around in parts of the set that stray from normal scenarios. The best example of this show going through the experimental route happens at the very beginning. It starts with Of The Girl, which seems normal, but the performance in itself sets up for the unconventional trio that follow - Immortality, Insignificance and 1/2 Full. The rest of the show maintains weird spurts of momentum with not many radio hits mixed in the main set. As for the hits go, this isn't the crowd that's going to follow the same kind of cues we're familiar with. We'll concentrate mostly on Better Man and how strange it was without any participation from the crowd. We'll answer our question of the week this week which stems off of the first four songs of the setlist, and our Gear Guru segment features Javier breaking down the juxtaposition between Mike and Stone's solo on the show closer, Porch. Wed, 01 Mar 2023 - 1h 34min - 279 - Episode 221: Maui, HI - 2/21/1998
Let's begin our Yield tour celebration by going back and covering the 25th anniversary of their two night stint in Maui. A destination show for Pearl Jam in a 5,000 person venue to kick off a strong slate of shows for 1998. Hawaii is a place that would gain importance over time as it became a second home for Eddie, and his friendship connections would later lead to him and Boom Gaspar meeting. This time period would also become known as the beginning of the end for Jack Irons as he would leave the band following the ensuing Australian tour leg. As we've discussed in the past three episodes, we'll once again have the chance to talk about some of the earliest performances of Yield album tracks. Songs like Given To Fly, Faithfull and MFC provided a punch and make an impact, while a song like Wishlist is still finding its way. This show features 21 songs in a shortened 90 minute set thanks to an early curfew, but the band leans heavily on No Code and the new songs while Vs. and Ten tracks are fairly limited. We'll discuss the fourth of fourteen performances of Around The Bend during this episode! If you like surprises, I think you'll be satisfied once the episode gets to about the 50 minute mark! No spoilers, but you'll enjoy this! Also, we'll have our Gear Guru Javier back to discuss Stone's wah wah pedal on Do The Evolution, and we'll answer the question of the week - what is your dream destination vacation spot that you'd like to see the band do a residency in? Wed, 22 Feb 2023 - 1h 32min - 278 - Episode 220: Sydney, AUS - 2/14/2003
This is our first episode of a year long series featuring coverage of some of Pearl Jam's milestone tour anniversary dates, and we're gonna kick it off with the tour that will be dissected the most - the 20-year anniversary of the 2003 Riot Act tour. The pacific rim was their first stop as they visited Australia and Japan, and this episode will cover the third night in Sydney. This was a little bit of a strange time for the band live. The Iraq war was on their minds and they had no problems being outspoken about it. Every show had a hint of it somewhere, whether it be the stage spectacle performance of Bu$hleaguer or even War tagged onto Daughter, it was pretty much guaranteed to be a nightly theme during this time. Another thing that looms heavily over the first leg is the Roskilde tragedy. Riot Act songs such as I Am Mine, Love Boat Captain and Thumbing My Way that were specifically written in the aftermath draw raw, emotional power as the incident was still fresh in their heads. There is a section in this show that will exhibit the pain and sorrow they were working through. We also get Can't Keep as the opener of this show, which led to our question of the week that you answered - what song that's never been opened with before would you like to hear begin a show? Also our Gear Guru segments will discuss Mike's octave pedal and how effective it was on the song Ghost, and the implementation of Boom's presence and Stone's guitar that make performances of Black stand out from this era. Oh, and McCready is a highlight on that too! Visit the Concertpedia - http://liveon4legs Donate to the Show - http://patreon.com/liveon4legs
Wed, 15 Feb 2023 - 1h 34min - 277 - Episode 219: Wembley Arena - 5/30/2000
We're heading across the pond to London for a show that had the honorable distinction of being dubbed an "ape/man" bootleg back on the Binaural tour. It was a two night stint at the Wembley Arena, and as the norm within the history of this band, night two shows are usually can't miss. But this night two kind of planted an early seedling for what future shows of this nature would look like, playing an entirely different set than the previous night and adding in some rarities for the fans attending both nights to feel like they got two very distinct shows. With only four brand new Binaural songs performed on this night compared to night one's eight, and a limited amount of Ten songs, the band went into every corner of their catalog to impress this crowd. We'll spend some time talking about a the more uncommon songs such as a monster performance of Habit, the second instance where Untitled/MFC were played consecutively, In Hiding being played for the first time in two years and a tremendous Off He Goes. But the story here will be found in Not For You. Played at a slower tempo perhaps similar to a Neil Young song, this version would end in utter chaos in which a certain front man would receive a nice battle wound to the skull. Our question of the week that you answered is have you ever been to a two night stay in one location, and what show did you think was the better of the two? Plus, our Gear Guru Javier returns to discuss some of Mike's effect pedals that created the era specific sound for songs like Grievance and Nothing As It Seems. Wed, 08 Feb 2023 - 1h 30min - 276 - Pearl Jam's Yield: A 25th Anniversary Retrospective
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Yield, we're taking a stroll down memory lane to take a look into the album's great impact that it's had on fans for the last quarter decade. We'll discuss how the album has impacted us personally, what it meant for Pearl Jam during that time period, how the absence of Jack Irons impacted the chances that some of these songs had to get played live and the master studio production work led by the best in the game, Brendan O'Brien.
