It’s Friday, that means it’s time for a mini episode. There’s no theme for our mini episodes (or cassette singles). Mike and Julia play just 1 song each. A song they heard at the grocery store, a song that’s stuck in their head, or a song they can’t stop playing. This week’s Singles gets a little heated with the news about The Supreme Court leak, so songs do get topical. It’s important to have these conversations and take action. We recommend donating to an abortion clinic in states at risk of losing all reproductive rights for their citizens. National Network of Abortion Funds is a great start.

We are #blessed to have Matt Vest from ON THE UPBEAT Ska Podcast on our show this week. Of course we had to mix the ultimate 90’s ska playlist for your ears. We play everything from heavy hitters like Reel Big Fish to smaller fish like Mealticket. All these bands left a lasting impression on the ska scene. As ska kids growing up this was definitely a fun trip down memory lane.

WE HAVE A GUEST! AN HONEST TO GOODNESS REAL LIFE GUEST! Friend of the show David Defeo of Low Speech joins us to discuss the compilation albums that made us. For around $3.99 compilations acted as a gateway in to new bands and genres. They were a small price to pay for 20+ songs and a good time. From Asian Man Records to Matador Records we cover all our favorites form the 90s and 2000s and even share some newer labels keeping the tradition alive.

We could also easily call this episode “Oh yeah…that song!” The 90’s brought us a lot of bangers. This mixtape is filled with bands that skyrocketed to top spots on the Billboard charts and played endlessly on the radio, but quietly disappeared in to your CD collection never to be heard from again. You’re going to love these songs or hate these songs but you’ll almost always think to yourself “I wonder what happened to them?” after each song.

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner and what better way to celebrate drinking from home than to make a mixtape dedicated to Irish bands and classic Irish drinking songs. We did both because neither Julia or Mike could figure out what the exact theme would be (We’re not professionals people).

All your favorite music can be traced back to Black musicians, plain and simple. In honor of Black History Month, we made a mixtape of Black pioneers. These are artists that certainly have paved the road for current Black musicians, but unfortunately may not have received the recognition they deserved. Artists added to the mix include Disco queen Slyvester and Nigerian afro-funk pioneer Fela Kuti. We also added bands like Led Zeppelin with the musicians their stole their sound from, Muddy Waters.

Back with another Singles-sode. Incaseyou’rewondering a ca-single or cassette single were frequently purchased when all you wanted was the hit song. It was kinda like iTunes before the internet. In these Single-sodes / mini-sodes, Julia and Mike pick out their favorite songs for the week.

Love is in the air...but you can't smell it because you should be wearing your mask outdoors. A romantic candle-lit dinner for two...but likely not because you should be staying indoors as much as possible. ValentiMe's Day is a little odd this year, but thank goodness for music. WOOF! What a year this month has been! It time America takes a little break, exhales a bit of relief and DRINK. We’ve earned it. We’re making progress as a country. While we still have a looooonnngggg ways to go, we’ve definitely earned a drink or two (…or 5, let’s be real here). Enjoy it! January 21st we get back to work!

2020? Am i rite? This election has been especially brutal with mind numbing debates and daily scandals. On the plus side, in less than a week we will have a new president (yes, we’re choosing to be optimistic)! Knowing the weight of this election we reached out to our listeners to help build this mixtape. Listeners submitted songs that are helping get through these months or remind them of what’s to come on Nov. 3rd and Jan 21st. Thank you to everyone who helped us make this episode! We love them, we miss them. Music brings so much to our lives that it hurts deep when an artist passes away. This year we had an extraordinary amount of musicians pass away due to Covid-19. We wanted to play you their songs as well as other artists who have recently passed as a reminder of the gifts they left us.

Robb & Patrick are the coolest dads we know so we asked them to put together a special mix of songs they not only their kids love but that we ALL love. We do play a song by Justin Townes Earle who passed away days after recording this episode.
