Back in 2023, during a changing of the guard at the MBTA, general manager Phil Eng set a plan in motion to eliminate 191 subway speed restrictions or slow zones by the end of 2024. Flash forward to now, as we near the end of 2024, there are currently only four remaining speed restrictions. An iconic house in Newburyport referred to as the “The Pink House” has been in the midst of a demolition battle between locals and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. What was originally built as a “spite” house in 1925 by a divorcee, has long become a historical icon in the region. The federal agency wants to tear down the home and return the land to its original state and support local wildlife, whereas the Support The Pink House organization is actively working to save it. The negotiations continue in Gloucester, Beverly, and Marblehead over educators’ contracts, in which the various teachers’ unions are asking for higher pay, more benefits, and parental leave among other demands. Beverly and Gloucester were scheduled to report to Essex Superior Court in Lawrence for a contempt hearing where they could face fines after they refused to call off their own work stoppages.
