Like many Americans, Thanksgiving is a cherished occasion—a time to gather with family, indulge in turkey and stuffing, and celebrate the bonds that hold loved ones together. This Thanksgiving event hosts three generations of family ready to enjoy a day of food and good company. After a busy day of food preparation, the guests all take their seats to eat the giant feast. A tradition that the family has been doing for many years starts right after everyone is stuffed from eating, a singalong by the piano. The tranquil joy would come to a shocking end as bullets rang out. It was a Thanksgiving that should have been like any other—a night for family, food, and tradition at a home in Jupiter Florida not murder.

Thank you to Ana, who helped me with some pronunciations. I'm still not sure I got it right.
By the time twenty-four-year-old Stephen Anderson stood in the doorway of the dining room on the 8th of February 1997 and announced, “I’ve had sex with a dog,” paused, and then added, “And a cat, too.” It was already too late for any intervention. The fates of the people seated around the breakfast table were already sealed.
Moments later, Stephen Anderson would come back into the room with a sawn-off shotgun and commit one of the worst massacres in New Zealand history.

Something Went Terribly Wrong: Griego Family MurdersIn the heart of Albuquerque, Pastor Greg Griego often stood before the fire department and the local jail, sharing his powerful testimony of redemption. Once entangled in the world of gangs in California, he had found a new path through faith, a transformation that resonated with those who listened. He was well-known and well-liked in the community. Greg Griego. Once a soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division, Greg had led a life marred by drugs and gangs. However, during a stint in jail in California in the early 1990s, he experienced a profound transformation, finding faith and embracing Christianity. This pivotal change set him on a path of redemption, ultimately leading him to serve others. While his wife, Sarah, dedicated herself to homeschooling their ten children in their modest home in the semi-rural South Valley. Greg had five children before he met his wife, Sarah, with whom he had five more. Greg turned their backyard barn into a sanctuary for released prisoners. Most would agree that Greg and Sarah were strict parents. They prohibited their children from playing violent video games and meticulously monitored their television choices. Greg Griego was determined to cultivate a home of hope, love, and healing, but that all ended on January 19, 2013.

This case is shocking. Shocking in many ways and I can't believe it's not talked about.
The only place I've seen this is on Southern Gothic from our friend Brandon. When he first saw a small blurb about it in a book, he didn't even think it was true so he asked Lauretta to do some research. Sure enough, it is 100% true. As sensational as it was and is, I can't believe it's been forgotten. So after you listen, make sure you catch the Southern Gothic episode "The Curious Case of Knox Martin."
In late March of 1879, in Davidson County, Tennessee, a wagon carrying a prisoner by the name of Knox Martin was headed to the gallows. John Kirk and Sons were busy building the scaffold that would host the hanging later that afternoon.
Mothers pulled their children out of school so that they could take them to the execution. Nearly 10,000 people were making their way to the location nestled between two ridges; some had even camped out overnight to guarantee the best view. For years to come, some folks in attendance at this execution would have an unbelievable story to tell.
It appears that in the days leading up to his date with the gallows, Knox Martin was approached by two doctors from the nearby Vanderbilt University, who, having great interest in galvanism, and who, having read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, wondered if Knox Martin would allow them to use his dead body for an unusual and ethically questionable experiment. Knox Martin had agreed.

It is January 8, 1981, and we going to Lassen County, California, where we encounter 21-year-old Kevin Thorpe. After completing high school, Kevin enlisted in the Navy, serving for three years before returning to his hometown of Ridgecrest, California. Upon his return, he met a young woman named Laura Craig at a social gathering. Laura, a mother to a young child, captivated Kevin, who was undeterred by her circumstances; his affection for her was profound. Their relationship developed quickly and intensely—an embodiment of the adage, “When you know, you know.”Eager for a fresh start, Laura and Kevin packed their belongings into Kevin's white Ford Elite, towing a utility trailer, and left Ridgecrest for Oregon, where they hoped to be closer to Kevin’s brother. They made the bittersweet decision to leave their baby, Treena, with Laura’s mother until they settled in. As they took the scenic backroads north on Highway 395, a sudden jolt signaled trouble: the trailer had a flat tire. They decided to press on to Madeline, where they encountered a seemingly helpful man who offered assistance and invited Laura to warm up inside with his wife. Just as they began to fix the tire, three other men arrived, discussing plans to meet women in Oregon. Though Kevin wanted to continue their journey that night, little did they know, that the warmth of the cafe would soon be overshadowed by a chilling darkness, as their lives would be forever altered by the intentions of those they encountered.

In Logan County, West Virginia, there have been sightings of the ghost of a murdered woman that haunts 22 Mine Road. But underneath the spooky legend and sightings is a chilling story about the free-loving, warm-hearted Mamie Thurman who knew too much.
It was the height of the Depression, and America saw the lowest numbers recorded on the stock market exchange. Prohibition was in full swing, and speakeasies and gambling houses permeated the town of Logan.
On Wednesday, June 22nd, 1932, a berry picker found Mamie Thurman's body on the side of a mountain. Her throat had been slashed. While investigating, police found that Mamie had been living a double life. A life that was deemed immoral by most of the town.
Clarence Stephenson, a black "odd jobs man," would be found guilty of the murder of Mamie Thurman and sentenced to life in prison, where he claimed his innocence until the day he died.
To this day, many think Clarence Stephenson is innocent, and Mamie's murder is still unsolved.
And there are some that believe Mamie haunts 22 Mine Road because her real killer was never brought to justice.

Today we are headed to Laurelwood, Oregon where we meet a young woman named Margo Compton. Margo grew up in Solano County, California. She was a bright child who made good grades and had good friends. Things started to change for Margo. Margo ended up getting married in August of 1969 to Doug Compton at just 16 years old. At first, all seemed good in their marriage. Things changed when Doug met new friends from the Nomads motorcycle club, an offshoot of the Hell’s Angeles. When Margo got pregnant, the violence began. This led to them both doing drugs and it was rumored that Doug often beat Margo. Doug started hanging out increasingly with the bikers and less at home. In July 1977, Margo testified in a California criminal case against a high-ranking member of the Hell’s Angels. This would be a fatal mistake.

On a frigidly cold night in 1976, in a western suburb of Chicago, sixteen-year-old Pamela Maurer was hanging out at her friend’s house in Woodridge, Illinois. Around 9:45 p.m., Pam decided she needed a pick-me-up and told her friends she was heading out to get a soda. Pam put on her plaid coat and headed out into the frozen night, her breath billowing and catching on the wind. She pulled her coat close and made her way through the snow-covered neighborhood.
When Pam did not return to her friend's house that night, none of her friends were all that worried. After all, her curfew was 10:00 p.m., and they assumed she went straight home after buying her soda. But Pam never got her soda. She never made it home, either. She would be found early the next morning when a county road commissioner came across her body lying frozen in the snow.
It would take forty years to find Pamela Maurer's killer.
However, the case doesn't end there. In fact, investigators found that it was just getting started.

On the morning of January 7, 2018, at 9:25 a.m., a chilling call was made to the 911 dispatch in Belgrade, Montana. A distressed woman reported that her neighbor had just come to her home in a panic, explaining she had returned to her residence to discover her two roommates had been shot. One roommate, she believed, was gravely injured but still clinging to life. Terrified, the neighbor had fled the scene and sought refuge, desperately asking for help. Law enforcement officers were immediately dispatched, though they had no idea what they were walking into. The initial report indicated that one female was dead and another, a 30-year-old, was wounded and unconscious. Recognizing this may be a difficult scene, the first responding officer requested backup as he approached the scene. Upon arrival, the officer was met by a visibly shaken woman—the roommate who had gone to her neighbor for help, now standing before him, clearly distraught. She was the third resident of the home, the one who had just witnessed the aftermath of what appeared to be a horrifying crime within her own home. On Saturday, February 20th, 2016, Matt called for an Uber driver around 4:00 in the afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When the Uber driver arrived at about 4:20 p.m., Matt noticed a dog in the backseat..
The Uber driver began driving recklessly, ignoring stop signs and driving into the median. He sped into an oncoming traffic lane, blew through a stop sign, and sideswiped a Ford Taurus. But outwardly, the driver acted like nothing was wrong. Matt was terrified. “Dude, you just hit that car!” he yelled at the driver. But the driver just said, “I didn’t hit anything.” In the back seat, the family dog lunged for the floorboard where she stayed. Matt begged him to stop the car, but the driver wouldn’t.
Matt continued to plead with the driver for the next few minutes to let him out.
The man said, “Don’t you need a ride to your friend’s house?” Matt yelled, “Not anymore! Let me out! Let me out!” But still, the driver ignored his pleas. Finally, the driver pulled onto Iroquois Trail and asked, “Which one is your friend’s house?” Matt took that opportunity to jump out of the car and run. A couple was sitting outside having a cigarette break and saw what happened. They immediately called 911. According to the woman, the 911 operator blew her off.
By the end of the night, that Uber driver would go on to kill six people and severely injure 2 more.

On Sunday, August 23, 1992, Tammy Jo Zywicki, a 21-year-old college student, had just dropped off her 19-year-old brother, Daren, at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The siblings had been traveling from the East Coast, and Tammy was eager to return to college. During their journey, the car, a white 1985 Pontiac T1000, had been experiencing issues, requiring frequent stops to add oil or water. After staying the night, Daren advised Tammy to monitor the vehicle closely on her journey back to college and pull over to a rest area if it acted up, especially given the day's heat. Tammy would never make it back to college.

On the afternoon of September 19th, 1978, Carl Bridgewater, 13, hopped on his bike and started his paper route. In fifteen minutes, he arrived at Yew Tree Farmhouse, owned by Mary Poole, 79, and Fred Jones, 75, who were roommates at the farm. Both were elderly and answering the door often took them a long time. So, Carl was instructed to leave the paper in a basket outside. But if the door was open, he was supposed to take the paper inside and deliver it to them directly. However, Mary and Fred were away on this particular day. They’d gone out on a visit. Carl noticed the door was open, so he stepped inside the house to deliver the paper, as he was supposed to.
Around 5:30 p.m., a friend of the cousins stopped by. The door was open; he walked in and found Carl Bridgewater’s dead body on a settee in the sitting room. Was it a robbery gone wrong?
Four men were charged with the murder of Carl Bridgewater after police obtained a false confession. Three of the men would serve eighteen years in prison before having their convictions overturned. The fourth unfortunately died in 1981.
So, who killed Carl Bridgewater?

It is May 24, 2000, and we are going to Tuscarawas County in Ohio to New Philadelphia. It is exactly what you think of when you say small-town America, with lots of farmland and friendly people. Elizabeth Reiser who goes by Liz is a 17-year-old high school student who is looking forward to graduating and finding out all that life has to hold for her. Her good friend 18 year old Brandi Hicks asked Liz to come over and stay the night with her. On this day Brandi who was in the school choir was going to the choir banquet and wanted Liz to go with her. Even though it was a school night, her mother relented and said yes. That evening, the two friends visited a video store in New Philadelphia after the choir banquet to rent some videos for a movie night. When they left the store and started to get into the car, a man approached them. The man claimed he had no means of getting home and asked the girls for a ride, telling them he lived nearby. The girls hesitated and told them they really needed to get home. The man then offered them $20 as an incentive. The girls did not want to give this stranger a ride, but he urged them to, and they relented. They were young, naive, and always looked for the best in people. After all, he only needed to go across town and then they could go back and watch the movie they had rented. Neither Brandi nor Liz would ever get to watch that movie.

Thank you to Nick for the episode suggestion.
Content warning: Child death
2017 was a wondrously magical Christmas season. Heaps of heavy white snow had piled on top of Oak Bay on Vancouver Island, and everybody, except maybe the most die-hard winter haters, was excited at the prospect of building snowmen and sledding.
On Christmas Day, Sarah awaited the arrival of her daughters, Chloe and Aubrey. They had been with their father, Andrew, the days before the holiday and were due to be home at noon. The set drop-off time came and went, and there was no sign of Andrew, Chloe, and Aubrey. Calls and texts were unanswered. Sarah drove to Andrew's house, and when Aubrey and Chloe didn’t appear at the window, Sarah grew even more concerned.

It is just after 10:30 p.m. on June 3, 1999, and we go to 23-year-old Bobby Bornt's home in Perry, Oklahoma. He sleeps on the couch, and his 9-month-old baby boy sleeps in a nearby room. Suddenly, a loud noise startled him awake. Three men entered the house after kicking in the front door. The three strangers beat Bobby mercilessly, but not all were strangers; Bobby recognized 23-year-old Clayton Locket as the tattoo artist who had recently done some artwork on him. The other two men were 26-year-old Shawn Mathis and Clayton’s 17-year-old cousin Alfonzo Lockett. Clayton wielded a shotgun, which he used to strike Bobby repeatedly. After the brutal beating, the attackers bound Bobby's hands behind his back with duct tape, gagged him, and left him on the couch. They then proceeded to ransack the house in search of drugs. What started as a “teach him a lesson” would end with a vicious murder on not just this warm June night but yet another murder in 2014 in what some experts would deem the most inhumane.

Thank you to Stacy for requesting this episode.
After 32-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Klein didn't show up for work on March 16, 2007, her wife of seven years, Nicole Abusharif, set off looking for her. After driving around their neighborhood, she found Becky’s car, a white work van, parked on the side of the road near their home. The van was unlocked, and the keys were in the ignition. Today’s case takes us to Mason City, Iowa. It's July 25, 1993, and like most school-aged kids, summer is the reward after being stuck in a classroom for nine months. Six-year-old Amber Duncan was no different. After an afternoon of playing on a Slip 'n Slide with her best friend, Brittney, Amber headed home around 3 PM, still wet from a day of fun in the water. As the little girl waved goodbye to her best friend, no one could have known it would be the last time she'd be seen. But Amber wasn’t the only one to go missing. What followed were years of agonizing questions and desperate searches. This is one of the most disturbing cases I've ever covered, and the man at the center of it all is a real-life Walter White. On a warm, partly cloudy night in Vidor,(ViE Dur) Texas, a newspaper boy, up early for his route, noticed that a black 1991 Mercury sedan was pitched forward in the ditch just off Interstate 10. The ditch was located between West Bolivar and the freeway access road. He immediately called the police to report the vehicle and that he was pretty sure there was a body in the front seat.
When the police arrived on the scene at West Bolivar and I-10, they immediately saw that there was a body of a woman sitting behind the steering wheel of the car. Her body was upright, back against the seat, and her head was turned toward the right, slightly nestled against the headrest. Her feet were pulled back toward the seat, and she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. When officers called out, “Ma’am?” she did not respond. They checked for a pulse and found that she was dead. The woman’s purse and ID were sitting upright on the car's floorboard, but the police already knew who she was. Kathy Page was the wife of Steve Page, whom Detective Ray Mosely had known for most of his life.
This murder inspired the Oscar-winning movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which Starred Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Peter Dinklage.

Today, we are headed to Riverdale, Georgia, on August 2, 2004, where the Fayetteville Sheriff’s office gets a call from a 16-year-old named Sara Polk, who informs them that there had been a murder or two, to be exact, and proceeds to give them the address of the location where the killing had occurred. Det Bruce Jordan takes the call and arrives on the scene to find two people savagely murdered. The first victim, 74-year-old Carl Collier, was located in the kitchen, which had blood spatter everywhere. Walking through to discover the next victim, investigators see a small bloody barefoot print on the floor. The print would lead them to the basement stairs. Detectives make their way down the stairs, where they see the second victim, 73-year-old Sarah Collier, at the bottom of the staircase. The scene was bloody and brutal. It was clear that the perpetrator was violent and skilled in murder.

Greg stared at his phone and wondered why Joanna, his girlfriend and flatmate, wasn’t answering his calls. Greg had spent the weekend with his family in Sheffield, U.K., which was about four hours north of Bristol, where he shared the apartment with Joanna. Maybe she was just busy. It was, after all, the weekend before Christmas. But still, it wasn’t like her to not reply to him at all. Could her phone be dead? If it was, it had been dead all weekend because she hadn’t responded to his calls or texts since before 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
“Joanna?” he called out as he entered. But he got no answer. Her purse was there. The keys were there, and a bottle of cider sat on the counter. It was half full. Where was she? He called her cell phone again, calling her name and looking in the closets. He stopped. Her cell phone was ringing from inside the flat. “Joanna!?” he called out again. Any hope he had that Joanna was somewhere in the apartment was dashed as he realized the phone was ringing inside her coat pocket. The temperatures had not reached above freezing the whole weekend. Now he was really worried; Joanna wouldn't have left without her coat. Now he was really worried. With a sinking feeling in his gut, he called the police.

Today's case takes us to Marietta, Georgia. The book centered on this case was one of the first true crime books I had read, and it has always stuck with me. The book Secrets Never Lie: The Death of Sara Tokars- A Southern Tragedy of Money, Murder, and Innocence Betrayed is by R. Robin McDonald. It is November 29, 1992, and Thanksgiving weekend has just ended. 39-year-old Sara has been visiting with her parents and her sisters in Bradenton, Florida, for the holiday weekend, but it was time for her and her two boys, 6-year-old Ricky and 4-year-old Mike load up the Toyota SUV to make the 9-hour trek back home to Marietta Georgia, an affluent suburb of Atlanta. After the three had departed, Sara’s husband Fred called the parent's home to inquire if they were on the road yet. Fred, who had been there earlier, had departed earlier as he had a meeting with a client that he couldn’t miss. Sara’s father, Dr John Ambrusko, had answered the call from Fred and told him they they had just departed. It was almost 10 pm when Sara and the boys pulled into her garage. Sara started to unload the car as one of the boys had fallen asleep in his car seat. As she was unloading, a strange man came out of the darkness. The man, who was carrying a sawed-off shotgun, forced Sara and little Ricky back into the car. What happened next is what nightmares are made of, what mothers fear most, and is proof that true evil exists.

It was 1996, and all anybody could talk about in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada was the Abbotsford Killer. A few months before, a sadistic, barbaric individual had beaten two girls with a baseball bat, raped one, and thrown her body in the Vedder River.
The killer taunted the police and terrorized an entire community of 108,000 people by promising that there would be more bodies. And he was still at large. People, especially women, were terrified to go anywhere.
What would make somebody do something like that? What would make him taunt the police and terrorize the victim’s family?

Former Dauphin County Chief Detective Thomas Brennan’s phone rings between 3 am and 4 am from a responding officer requesting assistance on a crime scene. When the detective arrives, he notices a car pulled close to a ditch. Brennen, who received training at the FBI Behavioral Science Unit during his tenure with the state police, knew immediately what he was dealing with when he arrived at the Conrail crime scene. After Brennan asks the officer for details, the officer explains that a Conrail train security guard had stumbled onto a man attacking a woman. The man was startled and he ran off. Thankfully the victim was injured but alive so he called for police and waited with her until help arrived. Detective Brennan noted that the vehicle’s trunk was open and inside was what many would call a “kit” such as rope, and duct tape, as in things to help someone kill or at least bind another person. Outside the car on the ground were plastic mats, seemingly to cover the ground inside the ditch. It was now clear to Brennan that this man had planned to kill his victim, put her in that ditch, and drive away. What was also clear to the detective was that this was not this man’s first time killing someone, he had done it before and he knew what he was doing.

In the summer of 1991, Krystal Naab was sixteen years old. She lived in a mobile home in Ramsey, Illinois, with her mother and two siblings. She spent time with her boyfriend, whom she had plans to marry, and hung out with her friends. Everyone described Krystal as a genuinely sweet person.
July 23rd was shaping up to be a scorcher, and by 7:30 a.m., it was already warm and humid. Since one of Krystal's chores was to mow the lawn, her brother Curtis woke her up before he left for work. He reminded her that it would be hot and that she needed to cut the grass while it was still cool outside. Curtis then headed out the door to do landscaping work for his uncle, unaware of the horror he would later return to.
When Curtis arrived home at 4 p.m., he found Kyrstal lying face-down on the floor in a pool of blood just inside the entrance to the trailer. She had been stabbed 81 times with a pair of scissors the family kept in a china cabinet in the living room.
A small, white truck was seen by neighbors in Krystal's driveway that day from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m., so police thought she must have known her killer. When they asked Curtis if he knew anyone with that type of truck, he immediately came up with a name.

Thank you to Jessi and Kristin for speaking with us about their friend Leanne.
Leanne Davidson Beck was known for being fiercely independent, tenacious, and kind. She had a good heart, and she was loved by everybody who knew her. Leanne was a ‘go-getter,’ and her friends say she’d always be the one encouraging them to get up and do fun things instead of sitting around bored. She could always find the positive in bad situations, and she was always giggling. Leanne was an only child, so she made lots of friends throughout her life who she remained close to and treated like family. When Leanne met a man who Leanne fell in love with, her friends and family were excited for her as she would finally get what she had always wanted: a loving, happy family. That excitement would soon turn into concern. At 3:07 am on the 29th of August 2021, Leanne’s husband made a panicked call to 911, stating that his wife had vomited and was not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they noted that Leanne’s eyes were fixed, and they were unable to locate a pulse. Despite the lifesaving efforts carried out by the officers on the scene, Leanne Davidson Beck was pronounced dead at around 3:30 am. She was just 33 years old.

On August 7, 1995, in Aroma Park, Illinois, 9-year-old Christopher Meyer approached his mom, Mika Moulton, asking for permission to visit the Aroma Park boat launch by the Kankakee River. Christopher, who spent his summers with his mother but resided with his father, Jim Meyer, in Walla Walla, Washington, during the school year, was eager to explore. Mika permitted him to go but set a curfew, instructing him to return home by 5 pm. When 5 o'clock came and went, Mika began to worry. She went out to search for Christopher but was unsuccessful so she returned home to phone the police and report Christopher missing. At the time, no one knew it but Christopher was not this person’s first victim.

In April 2001, Jerry Heimann's son, Greg, had come to Washington State to visit his father. When his father didn't pick him up from the airport, he grew concerned. When he arrived at his father's home, and there was no answer, he broke into the house. Jerry wasn't there, and neither were most of Jerry's belongings. As he made his way into the dining room, he found an 89-year-old grandmother, Evelyn, and an Alzheimer's patient slumped in her wheelchair. She had been left alone, starving. Greg called 911.
When police asked the neighbors if they had seen Jerry, they said they hadn’t seen anyone at the residence after the live-in housekeeper and elder helper, Barbara Opel, had backed a U-Haul into Jerry’s driveway, packed it full of things from Jerry’s house, and left.
Soon, police knocked on Barbara Opel's hotel room door, asking her, her children, and their friends to come down to the station to answer some questions about the whereabouts of her employer, 64-year-old Jerry Heimann.
Barbara spun a story of how Jerry was dying of terminal prostate cancer, and he was just finished with this world. He’d given her all his earthly possessions, and she had no idea where he was.
Nobody else talked to the police. They did not betray Barbara.
But eleven-year-old Derek did. When the police asked him if he knew where Jerry was, he simply said, “Yes. He’s dead.”

In the early hours of May 14, 1983, two California Highway Patrol officers pulled over a suspected drunk driver on the San Diego Freeway in Mission Viejo, California. Instead of staying in his vehicle, the driver jumped out, pouring the contents of a beer bottle onto the road as he exited. His disheveled appearance caught the officers' attention as he approached their patrol car. The officers asked for the man’s driver’s license, and he readily admitted that he had been drinking beer, but he claimed to be sober. Sergeant Michael Howard approached the vehicle and noticed a man slumped in the passenger's seat, partially obscured by a jacket, with empty beer bottles strewn around his feet. A folding knife was visible on the driver's seat. Howard tapped on the window, but there was no response. The man was unconscious and had no shoes on. His pants were unzipped, with his genitals hanging out of his pants. The officer attempted to find a pulse, but there was none. A closer look at the man indicated that the man had been strangled. This standard DUI arrest just changed to murder, but this is far from the only murder this man would commit.

All considered twenty-five-year-old school teacher and beauty queen Irene Garza to be a “devout” Catholic. She attended daily mass at Sacred Heart Church in McAllen. There was nothing pretentious or fake about Irene, and she lived her faith. Being good to others was part of her life’s mantra. She told a friend of hers that she found strength and comfort from her daily communion, so it was only natural that she would go to confession that Saturday evening before Easter. In fact, her family said that Irene attended confession every Saturday, whether she needed to or not.
Irene arrived for confession around 7:00 p.m., entered one of the confessionals, and seemingly disappeared. Five days after she went missing, on April 21st, 1960, the body of Irene Garza was found floating in the 2nd Street irrigation canal, just three miles from the Sacred Heart church where Irene was last seen.
Police only had one suspect in mind for her murder. He was the last person to see Irene the night she left. In fact, he heard her last confession. His name? Father John Feit.

Annie McCarrick, an American living in Ireland, left her home on March 26, 1993, and vanished into thin air. Her father, John McCarrick, said, “It’s as if somebody came along and just vacuumed her up off the planet.”
It's been thirty-one years since Annie was last seen. Many theories have been suggested and investigated in Annie’s disappearance. One is that Annie was abducted and murdered
by a total stranger. And for most people, this theory seemed the most plausible for decades. The reason for that is because of the other women who have gone missing in eastern Ireland, in an area that is known as the Vanishing Triangle.

Today, we are going to Harrington, Delaware, where 41-year-old Charles Holden returns home from work just after 1 am. Pulling up to his home, he notices a man lurking outside, peeking in the windows. Charles, who shares the property with his mother, left the scene to phone the police. Charles explained to the dispatcher that he feared the man was trying to break into his mother’s home and was worried since she lived alone. Charles went back to the location to wait for the police. Corporal Myrna Williams Kinney of the Delaware State Police arrived, walked around the house, and discovered a window on the back of the house had been shattered. Charles's heart sank as he worried about his elderly mother.

Never A Marine: Krystal Tobias, Laura Hobbs & Amanda SnellIt was a cold and snow-covered morning in February 2010 when Thomas and Lynn Love decided to take the scenic route to Woodbridge, a suburb of Alexandria, Virginia. The area had recently been pummeled with snow, not once but three times that month, leaving record-breaking accumulations across the Washington, D.C. area.
They drove by Prince William Forest and turned east onto Minnieville Road. The area is a sleepy suburb, with wide open roads interspersed with the occasional subdivision or neighborhood. However, large parts are still fields and woods, so the deer often play dodgeball in the traffic. So, Thomas drove more cautiously than usual. As their vehicle approached Alps Road, Thomas saw something move. He pulled over and got out of the car. When his wife realized what they were looking at, she, too, got out of the vehicle.
It was a woman, half-dressed, covered in slush and snow and blood, stumbling toward them. She was scraped from the knees down, her face pitted with tiny red dots, and the whites of her eyes were reddish-purple. Shivering, she said in a hoarse whisper, “I’ve been raped and beaten. Where’s Lisa? Is she alive?” Lynn wrapped the woman in a blanket, put her in the car, turned up the heat, and then called 911.
There was no way at that moment that the Loves could fully comprehend that they had just played a small part in catching a murderer, freeing a wrongfully imprisoned man from jail, and bringing closure to three families, all by saving the life of the half-frozen woman now seated in their backseat.

We are headed to Indiana, near the famed Speedway where the iconic Indy races unfold. It's September 12, 2000, around 7 a.m. when a call comes into police, reporting a vehicle ablaze near Decatur Township off State Road 67. Detective Larry Sanders swiftly responds, observing the inferno and sensing its deliberate nature. Amidst the efforts to douse the flames, a chilling discovery emerges from the trunk: a charred body, its gender indiscernible, limbs bound with wire. Amidst the chaos, crucial identifiers - the car's license plate and VIN - are found, linking the vehicle to Robby Bott. Robby, a resident of Morgan County, Indiana, leaves investigators grappling with unsettling questions: Is the deceased indeed Robby Bot? How did he end up in the trunk? And, most urgently, who perpetrated this heinous act, and what drove them to such brutality?

In 2007, Carly became friends with a musician named Brandon Kane on MySpace. The two initially bonded over their love of music, and soon, Brandon regaled her with stories of growing up in the wide-open spaces of the American Southwest and traveling to other exotic places. Carly hung on to his every word. Carly soon shared with her mother that she’d “met” this awesome guy named Brandon Kane.
Within 18 months, Brandon quickly became Carly’s entire world. Unfortunately, Brandon Kane didn't exist.
The ease with which one online predator was able to groom, lure, and murder fifteen-year-old Carly Ryan in Australia would not only rock the nation but would make headlines globally. It was a horrifying wake-up call. The world suddenly realized that the darling invention of social media had teeth, and it could bite.

Commerce City, Colorado, is a working-class community with a higher-than-average crime rate. On March 17, 2013, Nate Leon embarked on a journey to Domino's Pizza around 10:45 a.m. Nate, a devoted father of three and a full-time employee at IBM, also worked weekends at Domino's to supplement his income. On that particular day, Domino's received a call requesting a pizza delivery to an unspecified intersection. The employee informed the caller that an exact address was needed for delivery, prompting the caller to hang up abruptly. Minutes later, the caller phoned back, asking for a pizza delivered to a truck stop in North Denver. Although such requests were not their standard practice, the manager made an exception after the caller explained he was stranded at the truck stop, awaiting a tow truck. Nate was assigned the delivery, but when he failed to return to work, his manager reported him missing. This was just the beginning of a crime spree that would shock the community but not just in Colorado.

On the balmy night of June 28th, 2015, 46-year-old Dr. Teresa Sievers lugged her suitcases through Southwest Florida International Airport. At 4’ 11” tall, Teresa was known as a “little dynamo.” She was intelligent, abrupt, forceful, and, above all, caring. She always wore high heels, and she always spoke in an urgent manner. Nothing was ever blasé when it came to Dr. Sievers.
The four members of the Sievers family took a short trip to Connecticut for a family reunion, leaving on Friday, June 26th. Teresa decided to cut her visit short and head back to Florida to prepare for her workload the next week. There was no point in making Mark or their daughters cut their visit short, so she took a solo flight home. Mark dropped her off at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. It was the last time he would see her alive.

Today, we are headed to North Philadelphia. It is March 25, 1987, and police are about to enter a run-down home on North Marshall Street. Even though officers were told what they were about to encounter, there was no way anyone could ever prepare for what they saw. The smell hit them first before they even got into the residence. Officers were gagging as they made their way inside, trying desperately to concentrate on the task at hand. A sign outside the home indicated that it was a place of worship, claiming to be the United Church of the Ministries of God, but it was far from that: it was a severely demented man’s torture chamber.

Sometimes, being in the wrong place at the wrong time can have deadly consequences. Sometimes, it's not just the place that's the problem; it's the who that you're with. In the two cases we discuss in this episode, neither of these men intended to kill their victims. They did not set out that morning to take the life of another human being. Nor did they gain anything from the demise of their victims. But they were responsible for their deaths all the same.
The first case is in London, England, where twenty-four-year-old Charlotte "Charli" Brown from Essex had been looking for love on Tinder for some time but had had no luck. She wasn't interested in having a good time; she was looking for a long-term relationship. Before long, she began talking to a thirty-year-old web designer named Jack Shepherd. On December 8th, 2015, a Tuesday night, Jack took Charlotte to a restaurant on the 32nd floor and wined and dined her. Everything was going well until Charlotte was killed in an accident involving Jack Shepherd's speedboat.
The second case is a request from Jenn K on behalf of her mother.Thirty-one years ago, on August 30th, 1993, the body of a 33-year-old Nancy Lynn Manni was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay just 250 yards from the Cove Point Lighthouse in Cove Point, Maryland. Nancy had lacerations on the back of her legs and buttocks, which were most likely made from a propeller. The coroner felt that Nancy had been alive and trying to swim away when she was run over by a boat. It would take years and being featured on Unsolved Mysteries to discover who was responsible for Nancy's death.

Innocent Victims: Eastburn Murders
Katie Eastburn had posted a classified advertisement in a local newspaper catering to the military community near Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg to sell their English setter, Dixie. At the time, Katie's husband Gary, an Air Force captain, was away attending a squadron officer's school in Alabama, leaving her at home with their three young children. The couple had met twelve years prior at a singles' softball game, and Gary vividly remembers her powerful impact on him, saying, "It was like somebody hit me between the eyes with a ball-peen hammer. I was madly in love with her." They tied the knot in 1975, and Katie became pregnant three years later. In 1983, the Air Force relocated Gary and his family to Pope Air Force Base, where he served as air traffic control chief. When Gary proposed the idea of moving to England, Katie had some reservations; however, her passion for horses played a significant role in her decision, and after Gary assured her that she and their daughters would have ample opportunities to ride in the English countryside, she agreed to the move. Gary typically made Saturday morning calls to check in with Katie while he was away, but when he tried to reach her on Saturday, May 11, she didn't pick up, and he wasn't overly concerned yet. He tried repeatedly that day to reach Katie, but the calls went unanswered. When a neighbor noticed the newspapers were piling up, he looked in a window and made a gruesome discovery.

Home of Sun Studios and Graceland, it’s often referred to as the birthplace of rock-n-roll. So, it might surprise some people to find a little hotspot, an inconspicuous-looking (in kun spic yoo us) building, where the Latin beats pulse through the crowd of dancers. They go there for the salsa dancing with its fast, syncopated celebration of life. Dancers are bathed in pink and purple lights and sweat the night away.
It was there, in that little rumba room, where Heather Palumbo-Jones would spend one of her last happy nights on earth, wearing a brand-new dress and a big beaming smile. She danced for three hours with one of her best friends, something she might not have even been able to do just a year or two earlier.
It would turn out to not just be one of Heather's last happy nights on earth; it was one of her last nights on earth, period.

It is 4 pm on Thursday, November 11, 2010, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, when a phone call comes from police. On the line is Valerie Haythorn, manager of the nearby Dairy Queen, who is concerned that her employee 32 year- 32-year-old Tina Herrmann, has not shown up to work today or the previous day. This was very unlike Tina’s character, who has always been dependable. Valerie tells the police she is so worried she goes to Tina’s house to check on her. She is there as she is phoning the police. She informs police that she went inside the house via a rear window. Tina lives in the home with her two children, 13-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Kody, and her live-in boyfriend. She informs officers that there is blood everywhere. The officer tells her to stay outside, and they are on their way. Once officers are on the scene, they encounter a blood bath. The problem is that although blood was everywhere, there were no bodies. It was as if the family had disappeared.

***This episode talks about the school shooting at West Nickels Mines Amish School. If you are sensitive to this subject, you may want to skip this one.
***Jen had points where her voice cracked and tightened as this topic is very difficult for her, so please bear with her.
On October 2, 2006, the sun peeked over the horizon at 7:05 a.m. in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, bathing the green, undulating hills in a warm glow. It should have been a perfect day filled with friendship and laughter. Instead, this day would be remembered for the heartbreak and chaos that the community endured. It would also be remembered as when a small group displayed incredible compassion and benevolence. In fact, the day showed the entire range of human behavior, from the utterly vile to the impossibly divine.
That morning, children filed into the one-room schoolhouse, excited for the day to begin. Boys and girls, ages 6 to 13, took their seats. Their teacher, twenty-year-old Emma Mae Zook, was also excited to begin her day. Her family was thrilled that she decided to become a teacher, and that day, some of them, her mother, two adult sisters, and a friend had accompanied her to school. They wanted to watch Emma Mae do her job. This was not unusual for this community. The sign above the chalkboard read: Welcome Visitors.
Just one mile away from the West Nickel Mines School, 32-year-old Charles Roberts IV, known as Charlie to his friends, was having a very different morning.Charles put his two older children on the school bus. A neighbor heard Charles call his children back from the bus at the last minute for “one last hug.” The hugs lasted longer than usual, and he said to them, “Remember, Daddy loves you.”
He then loaded up his truck with carefully curated supplies and drove to the small one-room schoolhouse so he could "take revenge on God."

We are headed to Bemidji, Minnesota, where firefighters are at the scene of a mobile home fire where 35-year-old single mother Melissa Norby lived. As they worked to put out the fire, they noticed that windows had been blown away from the building by as much as 12 to 15 feet. They determined that the start of the fire seemed to be the primary bedroom. Once inside the home, in the bedroom they locate a gas can that had not burnt up in the fire. What else they find is much more disturbing. They find a body, but the body is underneath a mattress, and both the body and the mattress are severely burned. Furthermore, both were located in the middle of the home, not the bedroom. When firefighters noticed that the body had their hands taped and bound, they contacted the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Authorities rule it an arson, but it is clear that there is a homicide as well, but this is just the beginning of this twisted crime.

This is a listener request from Kari Schaan on our FB discussion page. Thank you Kari!
On a cold January night in 1985, just outside Wichita Falls, Texas, a bloodied and naked Toni Jean Gibbs tumbled from an abandoned trolley car where she had just been brutally raped and stabbed. Her attacker, knowing his job was done and that her death was inevitable, had already fled the scene, driving away in Toni’s brand-new Camaro.
Stumbling through the dark across the thick and scratchy grass of a north Texas grazing field, Toni, in a state of shock, ran for help. When she could run no further, she stumbled to the ground and pulled herself along on her belly. But there was nobody around to help. There was nothing around for miles. Maybe Toni just wanted to ensure that her body would be found. She wouldn’t be stuck in that rusty heap of metal, rotting away for years, while her family wondered what had happened to her. Finally, when she could crawl no more, 23-year-old Toni Jean rolled over onto her back, looked up at the endless starry sky twinkling above her, and took her last breath.
It would be almost a month before her remains were found, and the Wichita Falls police would eventually tie the murder of Toni Gibbs to several other murders in the area, and early DNA science would squash any doubt that it was the technology of the future.

We have one last episode for 2023!
Thank you to Tina for requesting this episode. She's been a listener since pretty much the beginning of OTCP.
On the evening of September 11th, 2017, a fisherman spotted an unusual object floating along the surface of Lake Ontario near Oshawa Pier. After several attempts to bring the object closer with his fishing line, he realized he had made a grim discovery - the dismembered torso of a woman. There were no signs of identification, such as age indicators, scars, or tattoos, so Durham Police began scouring their missing people database for clues.
It would take two months for police to identify the torso as 18-year-old Rori Hache, who had been reported missing a few days prior to being found. Despite their efforts to find the killer, the investigators could not find any significant leads that would give them the answers they were looking for.
On December 29th, 2017, the police received a call a huge break. A plumber had dialed 911 to report a suspicious substance found in a drain at a property he was working at. He had gone to the property following complaints from neighbors that their plumbing was backing up into their sinks and bathtubs and was causing an unpleasant smell throughout their apartments.
Durham Regional Police arrived on the scene a short while later and knocked on the home's basement apartment. When 45-year-old Adam Strong answered the door, he calmly said, "The gig's up..."

We made it to Day 12! We hope you've had a wonderful holiday season! Thank you all for such a great 2023!
Most people have heard of the Green River Killer. Washington State’s most notorious serial killer was hard to miss in the 1990s. His moniker and his horrendous deeds could be found in most major newspapers across America. But there was another serial killer preying on society’s weak and vulnerable at about the same time in the exact same state.
While Gary Ridgeway was killing women and dumping them on the western side of Washington, Robert Lee Yates Jr was doing the same thing just four hours to the east on the other side of the state. In fact, at one point, investigators thought that the Green River Killer had just moved his hunting ground. But after a few bodies showed up in Spokane with gunshot wounds and plastic grocery bags wrapped around their heads, they realized that the MO was totally different. With a growing sense of dread, investigators realized that the sex workers and runaways of Spokane were not the victims of the Green River Killer. They were the victims of an entirely different monster.

On June 2, 1985, the Southern San Francisco police department received a report of a shoplifting incident. A man calmly exited a store with a tool called a vice, placed it in the trunk of a beige 1980 Honda Prelude, and vanished before apprehension could occur. Officer Daniel Wright reported to the South City Lumberyard. Inside the car was a man who presented a driver's license identifying him as Robin Stapley. One issue: the license photo did not match the man sitting in front of them. License plates on the vehicle indicated that it was registered to an individual named Lonnie Bond, and the car was listed as a Buick. Growing suspicious, officers got into the trunk and discovered the vice that had been reported as stolen. Also inside the trunk is a .22-caliber revolver fitted with a silencer. The unknown man was taken into the station, where he adamantly denied any involvement in any wrongdoing. What would unfold in the next several days is unthinkable.

Day 10 is here!
On September 4, 2022, 32-year-old Myles Sanderson went on a killing spree in Weldon, Saskatchewan, Canada, on the James Smith Cree Nation. Eleven people lost their lives, and eighteen more were injured. This event is considered to be one of the deadliest massacres in Canadian history.
In a country where mass killings are relatively rare, the attacks shook the country to its core. Especially when Canadians discovered shortly thereafter that the RCMP had been looking for Myles since May of 2022 when he stopped meeting with his caseworker. The public was aghast to learn of Myles Sanderson’s criminal history and how the system had so grievously failed them.

On the 9th day of our "12 Nightmares before Christmas," our journey takes us to Pune, India, where we encounter twenty-one-year-old Renuka Kiran Shinde. She had just returned to her home, which she shared with her second husband, her son from her first marriage, her mother, Anjanabai, and her younger stepsister, Seema Gavit. Renuka was excited, as the family had long struggled financially and was searching for a way to obtain money quickly. Renuka believed she had a perfect plan, albeit a highly gruesome one, that would eventually earn the three women the infamous title of 'India’s Child Killers.'

It's already day 8!
On an August morning in 2009 in Brunswick, Georgia, twenty-two-year-old Guy Heinze Jr returned to the trailer that he shared with nine family members. When he stepped inside, he found the beaten bodies of seven people: his father, Guy Sr, Russell Toler Sr, Russell Jr, Michelle and Chrissy Toler, Brenda Falagan, and Joseph West. Michael Toler and Chrissy's three-year-old were clinging to life. Michael would later die at the hospital.
Guy Heinze Jr was arrested for the murders and found guilty in a court of law. But not everyone agrees with the verdict. While some agree Guy Jr killed his entire family in a drug-fueled rage, others believe that he is completely innocent. At the very least, they feel he did not get a fair trial and that the investigation was poorly executed.
Listen to Cam and Jen discuss "The Gynn County Massacre: Guy Heinze Jr" and decide for yourself.

On Saturday, September 19, 1992, Ken Seily and his companion Keith Caldwell were pursuing their shared passion for running. Both were running club members and regularly trained on various trails within the Belangalo State Forest. They spent a significant part of the day running through the forest, eventually reaching a location known as the "Executioners Drop" due to its steep descent into a deep gorge. However, as they neared this spot, a foul odor began to fill the air. The closer they came to the area, the more intense the stench. Upon reaching their destination, they noticed an unusual mound on the ground, with what appeared to be strands of human hair protruding from it. Upon closer examination, they also observed a shoe fragment emerging from the mound. Sadly, the discovery of this body would be the first of many to come.

Day 6! We are halfway there!
The revival was just getting started when 56-year-old farmer Rowland Stuart Taylor felt a wave of nausea and abdominal discomfort. Thinking it was just something he ate, Stuart fidgeted but wanted to stay for the revival. As the service went on, he began to feel worse and worse. He also didn’t want to disappoint his girlfriend, 45-year-old Velma Barfield, by leaving, so he decided to go out to the truck to lie down for a while.
When the revival ended, Velma returned to the truck and drove them home. She had to stop the vehicle at least once for Stuart to throw up on the side of the road. Assuming he had one of the many strains of influenza, Stuart asked a friend to care for his pigs “just until I get over this flu.” Stuart never got over the flu. He died two days later.
Stuart had not died of natural causes. He’d been murdered by his sweet, unassuming girlfriend, Velma Barfield.

On November 10, 1986, the Redlands, California, police department received an urgent phone call from a concerned woman. She reported that her highly responsible employee, 20-year-old Corinna Novis, had failed to show up for work for several days, which was uncharacteristic of her. Corinna recently relocated from Idaho to California and worked diligently to support her education. As news of Corinna's disappearance began circulating in the media and spread throughout the area, the Redlands Police Department received an intriguing phone call from the Laguna Police Department. A Laguna Police sergeant reported that a local convenience store manager had made a puzzling discovery near the dumpster.

It's Day 4!
On a cold and cloudy May of 1992, a middle-aged man and his mother visited the Hillview Memorial Cemetery in the Springfield township of Oakland County, Michigan. They were there to leave flowers for his father, who had passed away two years before. The man noticed something odd as he approached his father’s grave. There was a car parked haphazardly on the drive, with the door standing wide open. The man honked his horn, but when he got no response to that, he became worried. He got out of the car to investigate, and that’s when he saw a tattooed, muscular man with a mustache dragging a woman into the bushes along the tree line. The mustached man had his hand over the woman’s mouth, and she looked frightened. “Sir, will you go away?” the muscular tattooed man yelled.
The older man’s blood ran cold as he realized that what was going on wasn't consensual. As casually as he could, he placed the flowers on his father’s grave, turned, took down the car's license plate number, and then drove away. Soon, hehappened upon a patrol officer who was at the scene of an accident just a quarter of a mile from the entrance to the cemetery. He told the officer he’d just seen a man try to abduct a woman from Hillview Memorial. Oakland County Deputy Gary Alexander hopped in his car and headed straight for the graveyard. As the officer got closer, he saw the car speeding down the road, and he then engaged in a high-speed chase.
As he was cuffing the man, he heard a sound. He stopped, glanced around, and realized the noise was coming from the car's trunk. After securing the suspect, the officer managed to open the trunk, and there he found a woman bound with a plastic zip-tie around her neck. Alexander also found a handgun, a knife, and a bag of zip ties in the car. The deputy pulled the driver’s license from the man’s wallet, which read: Leslie Allen Williams.

Today, we are going to the University of Alabama at Huntsville. It was February 12, 2010, and the day commenced like any other typical school day. The campus bustled with activity, featuring a mix of young students envisioning their future and more mature individuals returning to complete degrees they had embarked on years earlier.
On that morning at UAH, Instructor Amy Bishop conducted her science classes, and her students later described the course as uneventful and routine. Meanwhile, a meeting for the biology department was slated for Room 369 in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology, which housed both the Biology and Mathematics departments. Amy Bishop joined her colleagues at the meeting, and for approximately 40 minutes, she sat silently among them.
What would happen next would shock the academic community, leaving three families grieving and many asking why.

Welcome to day 2 of The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas
Fifty-five-year-old Margarette Eby lived a rich and full life as a music professor at the University of Michigan. Margarette was well-liked by her students and coworkers and had several grown children of her own. Around 4:30 in the afternoon on November 9th, 1986, some of Margarette’s students arrived at the cottage to take her to a concert. When the students knocked on the door, they were met with silence. Finally, one of them tried the doorknob, and it was unlocked. They entered the cottage and found a grisly scene.
Margarette Eby was Flint, Michigan’s 56th homicide that year.
Five years later, in hotel room 354 in Romulus, Michigan, the wake-up calls from the front desk went unanswered. A 41-year-old flight attendant, Nancy Jean Ludwig Lud wig, from Minnetonka, Minnesota, had checked into room 354 around 9 P.M. the night before. Nancy had been a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines since 1976 and enjoyed her job quite a bit. It was about 12:50 in the afternoon when the housekeeper opened the door to a pitch-black room. The housekeeper walked over to the window and, upon opening the curtains, turned and discovered Nancy Jean Ludwig. She had been stabbed to death.
Both cases went cold until 2002 when new technology helped investigators find their killer, Jeffrey Wayne Gorton.

High school is brutal. To quote my dear friend Dexter from season 6, “High school, a small world unto itself, combining all the elements of a federal work camp with those of a third-world poultry farm.”
Adrianne Reynolds, a 16-year-old, had recently arrived in town in November. Originally, Adrianne had been residing in Kilgore, Texas, with her mother. However, due to difficulties in school, her parents decided to send her to live with her stepfather, hoping that a change of environment would provide her with a fresh beginning. Consequently, Adrianne relocated to East Moline, Illinois, where her father and stepmother eagerly welcomed her. It was in East Moline that Adrianne crossed paths with Sarah and Corey. Like most teenagers, all Adrianne wanted was to fit in, and she was an outgoing and talkative girl who loved to sing. Her biggest dream was to be a contestant on American Idol. Adrianne would never get the chance to audition for the popular television show. Adrianne would never get a chance to do anything ever again.

We are heading to Akron, Ohio, specifically to the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood, where families are actively engaged in their lives and the upbringing of their children. This well-established neighborhood is home to a diverse group of middle-class families, ranging from elderly residents to brand-new parents. The quiet area was shocked when, on April 18, 2016, a deadly house fire killed two of the neighborhood's own citizens. Friends wonder how this could happen to such sweet and loving people. The fire was determined to be arson, but investigators could not determine who set the house on fire; the case went cold. Then the unthinkable happened. On Mother’s Day 2017, the arsonist struck again, but this time, the blaze would end up being the deadliest house fire in the city's history.

Picture Perfect: Karla BrownIt was the summer of 1978 in America. The minimum wage was 2.65 an hour, the Bee Gees ruled the pop music airwaves, and Star Wars enjoyed a rerelease in select theaters nationwide. On the east side of the Mississippi River, just thirty minutes from St. Louis was the small residential town of Wood River, Illinois, where summer activities like fishing, swimming, and backyard barbecues were in full swing. Most of the residents of Wood River had lived in the town their whole lives and considered it the best of both worlds.
Karla Lou Brown, aged 22, felt the same way. When she and Mark, her boyfriend of five years, decided to move in together, there was no place that they’d rather live. They bought a home right in the center of Wood River.
Karla adored her boyfriend Mark, who was a few years older, but so far, he had been reluctant to make a long-term commitment regarding their relationship. When Mark finally suggested they buy a house together, she immediately said yes. Karla was the happiest she had ever been in her life.
That happiness lasted for one day.

In the summer of 1984, John Ruetten met Sherri Rasmussen, and the two immediately hit it off. Their deep bond led to their marriage in November 1985, and they were thrilled to start life as a couple. On February 24, John left for his job at an engineering company, allowing Sherri to sleep in a little longer. Typically, Sherri would have already left for work by this time, but that particular day brought a change in routine. Sherri had contemplated calling in sick because she was slated to attend a seminar and didn’t really want to deal with that. John's workday began with his arrival just before 8 a.m. A few hours into his day, he attempted to reach Sherri to check if she had gone to work. He continued trying to get her throughout the day but to no avail. Upon returning home, he noticed that the garage door was unexpectedly open, a departure from the norm, and Sherri's car was gone. As he ventured into the garage, he observed broken glass on the ground. A horrifying scene awaited John inside the residence. 29-year-old Sherri lay on the floor, her face bearing the brutal signs of violence—bloodied, with a swollen and bruised right eyelid, a vacant gaze from her open left eye, and her mouth in its final, silent gasp. In desperation, John reached out to touch her, hoping for a sign of life, but her skin was chillingly cold. At that moment, he knew that Sherri was no longer with them. John called 911.

It's a typical situation across America, in hundreds of towns and thousands of homes. As the Thanksgiving holiday approached, a recently separated couple hashed out the details of which parent would get the kids on what day and at what times. For now, Tanya Skelton had full custody of the children she shared with John Russell Skelton. Still, Tanya felt that their three sons, Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner, should get to spend part of the holiday with their father, so she allowed them to spend Thanksgiving Day with him. The boys were to be returned to her at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon on the following day, Black Friday, but they didn't come home.
For Tanya and the tiny town of Morenci, Michigan, Friday the 26th of November 2010 would turn out to be the blackest of all Black Fridays.

Warning: This episode deals with child abuse. Listener discretion is advised.
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 4, 1996, 19-year-old David Barnett went to the residence of his adoptive grandparents, Clifford and Leona Barnett. His grandparents were away, attending church services at the Kirkwood Baptist Church in St Louis. David accessed their home by entering through a bedroom window, where he sat on the couch, turned on the television, and eventually drifted off to sleep. Upon waking up, he contacted his stepbrother, Scott, and enthusiastically claimed that he had recently won the lottery overnight. Clifford and Leona returned home from church around 1 p.m. Barnett was waiting for his grandparents when they returned home. A horrifying turn of events unfolded, resulting in the brutal murders of two individuals, leaving the community bewildered and seeking answers as to what happened to David.

In August 2002, Michael Short, his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Jennifer, lived in a red brick ranch-style home right off Hwy 220 in Oak Level, Virginia. Michael owned a business named M.S. Mobile Home Movers, employing various people, most of whom were temporary or transient. The company was not doing well, so Michael decided to put their house up for sale and move into a mobile home until he could figure out his next move. He had even made a trip to the coast of North Carolina to see if he could find work there.
On the evening of Wednesday, August 14, 2002, the family's plans were up in the air. They may or may not sell the business, and they may or may not move to North Carolina. On that night, they had every reason to believe that whatever came their way, they'd do it together as a family.
Unfortunately, Michael and Mary would be found shot execution-style the following day, and 9-year-old Jennifer was nowhere to be found.
After an exhaustive search, Jennifer's remains were found 41 days after her parents were found murdered.
Now, 21 years later, police are no closer to finding their killer.

On July 1, 1998, at nearly 1 p.m., a call came into the 911 emergency call center to report a fire at her home on Cherry Creek Drive in Saugus, California. The woman caller had a dry, matter-of-fact tone “The house is all smoke.” The dispatcher asked if the house was still smoking and the woman said “No, not now, it’s over.” She then went on to say “We had a fire last night. I woke up and everything was black.” The dispatcher in a bit of confusion confirms what she heard. “You had a fire last night?”
Caller: “Uh-huh”
Dispatcher: “And you just woke up?”
Caller: “Yes”
Dispatcher: “You were sleeping the whole time during the fire?”
Caller: “Yeah, I assume”
When responders arrived, they found that the fire had already been extinguished for some time. Sandi Nieves, who called first responders, was covered in soot and was waiting in the living room on the couch along with her 14-year-old son, David who also had soot on him. Both of them were eating cookies and acting bizarrely. David was zoning out watching TV. Sandi told the paramedics that everything was fine and they didn’t need to be there. What authorities would discover was a grisly crime that no one could have ever imagined.

On February 1st, 1993, a minister was summoned to a house off Dimboola Road in the outback town of Antwerp, Australia. When he arrived, he was greeted by a man named David Klingner, who said, “It’s a long story,” as he led the pastor into the house. Inside, the minister was overcome by a foul stench. Blowflies were buzzing around the house, attracted to the putrid smell of decay. The minister was pretty confident that whoever they had called him for was beyond saving.
He made his way past a group of people who were calmly eating their lunch at the kitchen table into a bedroom where the swollen remains of 49-year-old Joan Vollmer lay fully dressed on a mattress. The minister immediately phoned the police, and a constable was sent to the house.
When Constable Michael Arnott arrived, he spoke to the dead woman’s husband, 54-year-old pig farmer Ralph Vollmer. After just a few moments, the constable understood the situation as thus: Ralph’s wife had been possessed by ten different demons, and she had died as a result of her “deliverance,” otherwise known as an exorcism.

Today, we are en route to Birmingham, Alabama, where we'll meet Tracey Schoettlin, a 26-year-old with big aspirations. In the summer of 1986, Tracey worked as a waitress at the Southpoint American Cafe while diligently preparing for the LSAT, the crucial exam for law school admission. She took the LSAT multiple times until she achieved the necessary score for acceptance into Samford Law School. Her ultimate aim was to become a lawyer and serve an underserved community. Tracey's determination and ambition indicated that she was well on her way to realizing her dreams. On the fateful evening of July 13, 1986, Tracey left the restaurant around 11 p.m. intending to head home. Tragically, she never reached her destination. As the investigation unfolded, the circumstances surrounding her murder were deeply disturbing and nearly unbelievable. This homicide case would ultimately evolve into one of the most extensive criminal investigations in Jefferson County. The perplexing question remained: What could have motivated someone to inflict harm upon this young woman?

Pumpkin spice season is often people's favorite time of the year. Relief from scorching summer temperatures arrives, and with it, a glorious orange, gold, and red blanket splays across the countryside. And in October of 2004, California's Napa Valley, home of America's wine country, was amping to be a spectacular autumn.
In one of Napa's cozy neighborhoods on Dorset Street, a house was decorated for Halloween like many others. In that house lived three women, friends who decided it was wiser to pool their resources and live together than separately. And even though Napa had a low crime rate—two years since there had been a serious crime—there was safety in numbers. Or so they thought.
On November 1st, 2004, at about 2:00 in the morning, Lauren was awakened by the security light flipping on behind the garage. She didn't overthink it because sometimes the cats would often get out. But then she heard her dog give a "warning bark." Lauren quieted her dog, but within minutes, she heard someone entering the house and going up the stairs. Thinking it may be one of her roommate's boyfriends, she quieted the dog again and dozed off.
Then she heard a blood-curdling scream.

On May 31, 1990, in New York City, a call came into the police about a 78-year-old man named Joseph "Joe" Proce, who was shot in the back outside his home by a stranger New York City has seen its share of homicides. In fact, Newsweek magazine said that 1990 was one of the worst years for homicides in the city. This shooting was different because the shooter left a note. A circle at the top of the letter is divided into sections with symbols inside each piece. It was later determined these symbols were the zodiac signs of Gemini, Scorpio, and Taurus. Below the circle is written the statement, “This is the Zodiac. The 12 sign will die when the belts in the heaven are seen.” At the end of the letter, there is yet another symbol, one that is familiar to many: a circle with a cross in it, as in gun sights. Next to the symbol is the name ‘Faust.’ Today, we will discuss the Zodiac Killer but not that Zodiac Killer. This is the New York City Zodiac, and people are wondering if the original has returned to finish what he started all those years ago.

Within minutes, the dark clouds hovering in the sky let loose, dumping rain and hail on the grotesque scene. “It was like the Lord was mad,” one officer said later. “Like He was real mad. I mean, really pissed off.”
In the Blazer was Susie Newsome Lynch, her first cousin and lover Fritz Klenner, and Susie's young sons, John and James. The events that led to this tragic moment are drenched in deep-seated resentment, paranoia, fear, obsession, and hatred. By the time the carnage was over, nine people had died, three officers were wounded, three families were left in ruins, and those who survived were devastated. It left everybody scratching their heads and asking, “Why?”

The book Jen talked about is called Bitter Blood by Jerry Bledsoe. Mr. Bledsoe originally wrote about this case in the Greensboro News & Record, and that piece won an award. That was then turned into this book that hit the New York Times Bestseller list. Jen would mark it as one of the top True Crime books she's read. You can find the Amazon link at the top of the sources list.
The made-for-TV two-part movie is called In The Best of Families: Marriage, Pride & Madness. Starring Kelly McGillis, Harry Hamlin, and Keith Carradine.

We are headed to the great state of Texas, Houston, to be exact. Renee and her 19-year-old daughter Ashley Wilson are very close, talking often, usually every day. There was no answer when Renee tried to reach out on the phone to have their usual chat. Usually, this may scare Renee, but she thought she knew why. Ashley had called her mom a few days earlier to tell her she had some news, and that news came with lots of crying in about nine months. Renee thought Ashley was upset with her as her, as Renee told Ashley there would have to be some changes in her life with a baby coming. One of those changes included moving back home. Ashley, who had just moved out, had been in a terrible car accident with severe injuries. Ashley took a long time to heal and was proud of her new independence. On January 19, 2004, a call came into the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s office. Renee is shocked to find her sweet daughter dead inside her apartment. Around her neck is the cord she wore around her neck at her high school graduation and a pillow over her head. Ashley had hanged herself, but Renee did not believe this to be the case. Perhaps Renee was wrong, or maybe it was a mother’s intuition.

This episode deals with the rape and death of a young child.
Ten-year-old Holly had been playing with a neighborhood playmate a bit younger than her. When it came time for her friend to go home, Holly didn’t want the little girl to walk back alone. So her mother, Maria, gave her permission to escort her friend home since the walk wasn’t very far, only about six minutes. In fact, it was the same route that Holly took every day to get to school.
By 8:30, darkness had fallen, and Holly had not arrived home. At first, Maria thought that her daughter must have stayed at her friend’s house to play for a little while, but a quick phone call confirmed that she hadn’t. Family and friends began canvassing the neighborhood. A frantic Maria called the police and reported her daughter missing.
The next morning, a man was walking their dog along the beach when he saw a black nylon duffel bag in the water. Inside that bag, he would find the torso of a young girl wrapped in plastic.

Donna Willard, a single mother of three, lived in a tight-knit community of South Philly, doing her best to raise her three children. Her oldest was Todd, 12, with his baby sisters, 10-year-old Donna and 7-year-old Jessica, following. They were the light of her life, and she worked hard as a hairdresser to give them a good life. Donna was petite, weighing just over 80 pounds at 4’10, but she was big in her principles. She believed in working hard and doing the right thing. She was energetic and outgoing; love was the only thing missing in her life. In 1988, that would change for Donna when a man named Tommy Tyrrell, a pipefitter by trade, stepped into her hair salon for a haircut and ended up leaving with much more: her heart. After dating for a bit, Tommy popped the question, and the two were engaged. Life was perfect for Donna and Tommy, with a bright future ahead of them, but neither would know that was all about to change.

In many ways, the Privackys were your average American family. They lived in western Michigan, in rural Dalton township just north of Muskegon. The family consisted of Stephen Privacky, a his wife Linda, and their two sons. Jedidiah, and Seth.
Around noon on November 29th, the already tense family relationships were strained to the breaking point when Seth and his father had yet another fight. Only this time, his father told Seth that he wanted him to move out of the house. This enraged Seth, who claimed that his father never had anything positive to say to him.
Steve left the house around 12:45 to pick up his father, John, to bring him back to their home for Thanksgiving dinner and Linda decided to take a quick shower. Jed made himself comfortable on the couch in front of the TV.
Seth went upstairs to his parent’s bedroom and took the gun out of his father’s closet. While the aromas of Thanksgiving dinner filled the house, Seth loaded his dad’s .22 caliber Ruger.

Today, we are going to a small town in Iowa called Macedonia. The city is located just outside of Omaha, Nebraska, and boasts a population of around 250 residents. It is the kind of town in America where everyone knows each other, and you can’t get away with much because you are either related to them or someone you know is related to them. When a 37-year-old single mom named Cari Farver disappeared in 2012, it was all hands on deck. It would take many people to get some answers for those who loved Cari, and when the answers came, the truth about what happened was nothing less than a horror movie. If this story were not true, you would find it difficult to believe.

David and Patricia Stallings married in August of 1988, and with the belief that they were about to embark on their part of the American Dream, the couple bought a small white farmhouse on Lake Wauwanoka in Hillsboro, Missouri
Twenty-four-year-old Patricia gave birth to the couple’s first child, Ryan Stallings, in April of 1989. Even though Ryan suffered from gastronomic distress since birth, the couple were overwhelmingly happy in their new roles as parents. But on July 9th, 1989, that would all change as Ryan became horribly ill with nonstop vomiting and labored breathing. Patricia drove full speed up Highway 21 toward St. Louis with her sick baby cradled in his car seat. In a panic, Patricia got lost and ended up at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital instead of going to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, as she intended.
Once there, Ryan was immediately ushered into the ICU, put on a ventilator, and had numerous tubes and IVs going into his tiny body. Patricia was overwhelmed when the doctors couldn’t seem to diagnose what was wrong with him. They slammed her with a barrage of questions and then ran a complete blood and urine analysis. The staff would not allow her or David to be alone in the room with Ryan. Anytime David and Patricia were in Ryan’s room, there had to be medical staff present.
Three days later, Patricia was arrested on assault charges for poisoning Ryan.

Together Forever: Barbara and Patricia Grimes
Life in America in the 1950s often conjures up images of an idyllic suburban life. Fueled by unprecedented economic growth after the lean and stressful years of World War II, Americans enjoyed the stability and prosperity that they craved. The innocent and wholesome portrayal of the nuclear family was often depicted in programs like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver as one where every problem could be solved with a good ol’ heart-to-heart talk and a slice of apple pie.
But look closer, and there are cracks in that façade. The polio epidemic terrified families of the early 1950s, the Cold War raged, and there was little room for divergent views in what had become a homogeneous society. And crime? It existed, even if television shows tried to pretend that it didn’t.
Elvis Presley rocked America socially and literally with his huge hit Heartbreak Hotel in January 1956. Less than a year later, Presley would have a legion of fans and a new movie called Love Me Tender. And it was on a freezing cold night in December of 1956 when two teenage sisters, Barbara and Patricia Grimes, disappeared off South Archer Avenue in Chicago after having seen Love Me Tender for the twelfth time at the Brighton Park Theatre. Their disappearance and subsequent story would be hailed as the crime that stole Chicago’s innocence. It just shone a light on the less than Leave-it-to-Beaver reality.
This case is still open, so if anyone has any information regarding the Grimes sisters case, the Cook County Sheriff’s dept has a page where you can submit information. Link below.
https://www.cookcountysheriff.org/case/819/
Theresa Grimes is the only sibling left of Barbara and Patricia, and she is in her 80s. It would be amazing if she could see her little sisters get justice.

Warning: This episode is graphic. Listener discretion is advised.
It is a rite of passage for many American college students, and that is Spring Break. It’s a time when students can cut loose, drink too much, and make plenty of bad decisions. Whether Palm Springs or Palm Beach, kids flock to the surf, sun, and sand to have a week full of fun. As parents, we know our children are getting older, and we would probably prefer them not to go, but we have to trust them and know they will be ok but…what if the darkness that lurks out there is more evil than we could ever comprehend and it is just waiting for the right moment to strike.
On Wednesday, March 15, 1989, in Brownsville, Texas, two young men came into the station to talk to Chief Investigator George Gavito. The two men tell the investigator their good friend is missing as they explain that they are visiting South Padre Island for spring break. When investigators finally learn what happened to Mark Kilroy, it is indeed the stuff of nightmares.

Springfield, Missouri, is an unassuming town of historical significance. Located in the southwest portion of the state, Springfield is home to about 170,000 people. And although the city is no stranger to violent crime, as many might remember the now world-famous 1992 disappearance of the Springfield Three, it's mostly a quiet place to live.
Mark and Diane Staudte resided in Springfield with their four children. Mark played the guitar and sang lead for a local band, and Diane was a nurse and the family's primary money maker.
On Easter Sunday, April 8th, the paramedics and police were called to the Staudte home to find Mark unresponsive and without a pulse. Initial examination by the paramedics concluded that Mark had been dead for several hours. Nothing seemed unusual except a ring of blood around his mouth. The coroner ruled Mark died by natural causes.
Mark and Diane's 26-year-old son Shaun would be found dead five months later. It would take the second oldest child, Sarah, to be admitted to the hospital in critical condition before an anonymous caller would ask the police to investigate. They feared the members of the Staudte family were being murdered one by one.

It is Saturday morning, Dec 10, 1994, when a phone call from the fancy downtown Atheneum Hotel comes into the police. A hotel guest named Roberta Amos is found dead in the bed. Investigators are sent to the scene. Police ask the 51-year-old Lowell Amos, who goes by Ed, to recount the hours leading up to when he woke up and discovered his 37-year-old wife dead next to him. Ed said the previous night, the couple attended a Holiday party thrown by his employer, who booked several hotel rooms for the attendees to stay in. Ed said the couple was having a great time and drinking lots of bubbly when his wife, who goes by Bobbie, started whispering sweet nothings in his ear. The two left the party, but the night was not finished for the couple, who would attend yet another early morning party. What happened to Bobbie is not immediately apparent, but investigators suspect something is amiss. As they begin the investigation, they are led down a twisty path of mysterious deaths.

It is March 17, 1997, and the day is winding down for Killaloe Ontario police superintendent Ken Leppert. As he leaves the Ontario Provincial Police dept, he is greeted by 39-year-old Nancy Filmore. The visibly upset woman demands to speak to a detective. As the two sit down, Nancy tells the detective she is there to talk about Cherrylle Dell. She blasts into name-calling, directed at the 42-year-old widow and mother of three, Cherrylle. Nancy goes on to say that Cherrylle has been opening accounts of credit under fake names and reporting bogus burglaries to gain insurance money. When asked if she could prove her allegations, Nancy said no, leaving the detective with little to go on. He takes her statement and files it away for now. When asked how she knows Cherrylle, Nancy said they used to date, but the relationship ended and not on a good note. Nancy adds that she is suing Cherryll, claiming that her ex-lover stole money and clothing from her. Now the detective wonders if this is just a scorned lover out for revenge, but this is only the beginning. As Nancy is telling the detective this long detailed story, Nancy messes up and tells a little too much…it is too late now. She could not go back. The detectives knew there was much more to this story than revenge and a jilted lover. Nancy is clearly scared of implicating herself...but in what and why?

It is June 16, 1987, and we are in Nashville, Tennessee, and a beloved church named Emmanuel Church of Christ Oneness Pentecostal has experienced a substantial damaging fire. Detective Robert Moore reports to the scene. He quickly determined that the fire had severely damaged the structure, burning extremely hot. The organ had melted, and the chandeliers had fallen to the ground. The walls were black from soot and smoke damage. Although he could see the severity of the fire, he was not there to investigate the fire itself but rather something that the fireman discovered in the church's attic. Since there was no electricity, Moore had to use a flashlight to make his way. In the corner, he notices a pile of stuff, primarily unused wood, materials, just a bunch of stuff thrown on top of what looked like a rolled-up carpet. Wondering what could be on the rug, he begins to unroll it. As it unwinds, human feet appear, but the shock is yet to come. The body had no head, and half of the arm was missing. Upon closer inspection, he notices a belt with a belt buckle. The buckle had the initial ‘T’ on it. Only one person had such a buckle: the well-loved 44-year-old church pastor John David Terry. There was not a break-in, so robbery was out of the question. As the investigation begins, investigators will travel down a deep and twisty path to get a resolution. What they find out is difficult to believe, even for seasoned detectives.

This is a case that has stuck with Jen for a few years now.
In late 2015 a breathtaking image of nineteen-year-old Raudha Athif wearing a snow-white sleeveless dress, standing chest high in the cerulean, teal swirl of the Indian Ocean. It wouldn’t take long before the image snagged the attention of Vogue magazine. While being a model is a dream for many young women. Raudha had aspirations of being a doctor like her father.
After receiving a scholarship to Islami Bank Medical College, Raudha headed to Bangladesh, which was quite a culture shock. Raudha adapted beautifully. When her Vogue cover hit the stands in October of 2016, the happiness Raudha felt soon gave way to concern. The students at the school began to treat her differently. She received threats and insults for not dressing in a manner appropriate for a Muslim girl. Raudha adhered to the dress code while at school, but modeling, in general, is looked down upon in some of the factions of Islam. To have her depicted in the magazine with exposed arms, shoulders, and hair made matters even worse.
By the end of March 2017, Raudha was found dead in her dorm room. While doctors in Bangladesh ruled her death a homicide, Raudha's family believes it was foul play.

It is January 31, 2012, and a family member decides to drop by the home of 24-year-old Billie Jean Hayworth and her fiance 35-year-old Bill Payne. The couple, who shared a 6-month-old son, had recently gotten engaged and we were excited for the future. A family member who regularly stopped by to check in on the young family was always greeted by the baby crawling around. This time it was different. After not being invited into the home, she entered through the unlocked door. She was immediately thrown off since there was not the usual hustle and bustle of the morning. Instead, pure silence. The women called out to them but no one responded. As she made his way through the hallway, she looked into the bedroom and saw Bill Payne lifeless on the bed. Then he came upon Billie Jean on the floor, covered in blood, with her still clutching to her baby boy. The baby had her mother’s blood on him but seemed to be unharmed. The woman makes a frantic call to 911 in shock from what she has witnessed and tries to soothe the baby. Police head to the location nervous about what they will discover. This is not the norm in this quiet Tennessee town of Mountain City, population 2415. Agent Scott Lott from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reports to the scene. He determines Bill Payne had a gunshot wound to the face and his throat had been slit. Billie Jean had a gunshot wound to the head as well. The house did not seem to be in disarray indicating this was not a burglary gone wrong. What it did indicate was that someone wanted both of them dead and made sure to make that happen. The murders looked clean, as in a hit.

One of the scariest yet most exciting things is letting go of your child as they become an adult and go to college. As a parent, you have done your job getting your child to this point; now, you will drop them off at college, trusting they will be safe and have a blast while getting an excellent education. That is how it is supposed to go, but sadly that isn’t always the case. Today we are headed to the southern united states to Mobile, Alabama, which struggles with New Orleans to claim the right to be the one Mardi Gras city. Debate is to which city helps the first mardi gras. It is a cute small, safe town. In Mobile, you will find the University of South Alabama. Now if you are a local or a student, it is simply South. The year is 1979, and 18-year-old Katherine Foster is excited to start college. Katherine has a beaming smile and friendly personality, but she also has the brains since she was the salutatorian of her class. What should be the best time of her life ends before she even really had a chance to get started.

This episode contains discussions of sexual assault.
Bloomington-Normal is a metro area of about 130,000 people in north-central Illinois. Located just two hours southwest of Chicago, Blo-No, as it is affectionally called, is one of those cities in America that’s known for being, well, normal. It’s flat, there’s not much to see, and it's surrounded by cornfields. One local real estate agent describes Bloomington-Normal as the town that “has everything you need and nothing that you don’t.”It's a town where people feel safe.
So, it was quite disconcerting when on the 4th of April in 2003, a twenty-five-year-old woman, who was sound asleep in her home in Bloomington-Normal, was suddenly and terrifyingly woken in the middle of the night by an intruder. This was the second rape in four months, and police noticed that the details of that case were terrifyingly similar. It was unusual for the town to have even one occurrence of stranger rape at all, let alone two. Something was horribly wrong. The police had the sickening suspicion that the town had its very first-ever serial rapist.

There is a job for kids that doesn’t exist today: the old paperboy. Kids would wake before sunrise and hop on their shiny Schwinn bikes with a banana seat to deliver the newspapers to the neighborhood. 13-year-old David Reed was the local paper boy for the Pottsville Republican, and he always made sure to get papers to his neighbors in Schuylkill Haven so they could get the morning news with their coffee. David always wore his uniform, a t-shirt with the newspaper’s name and logo, when he delivered so people knew him and liked the kid. At this age, your bike is your transportation. You take great pride in it, and it gets you to where you want to be. One summer day, David left on his bicycle to go and meet up with friends. This was common; however, when he failed to come home, worry sets in as this was not like David. It was also a concern because David had juvenile diabetes, and eating on time was crucial. It would take years to find out what happened to David Reed.

Every now and then, police officers experience a case that shakes them to their core. In May of 1982, that’s exactly what happened. Two beat patrol officers in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, were first to respond to a frantic phone call reporting a dead body, one would quit the force within six months, and the other would ask for a desk job where he would remain for the rest of his career.
Darlene Prioriello disappeared from a bus stop after spending an evening with her boyfriend. The next day, a local factory received a call telling them to check the field next to their building. For a week, the killer would harass the Prioriello family and taunt the police, threatening to kill again.
