It's A PUNK ROCK REWIND! We are throwing it back to Season One Episode 08! "Breaking the Status Quo" What's more punk rock than bucking the system, fighting the man, and tearing down some walls? That courage to stand up, speak out, and change the system that can be found in punk rock should be found in education too! Join Mike and Josh as they discuss how they see breaking the status quo as key to education. Our students, our schools, and the communities we serve need us to speak up, stand up, and do things differently to help kids be successful. S3 Collaboration 08 with Sarah Thomas One of the awesome things we would see in punk is at shows when musicians from different bands would join forces on stage or when one of your favorite punk singers would lend their growl to some gang vocals on another band's record. We wanted to create that same thing here at PRC. On this punk rock collaboration, Josh and Mike chat with Sarah Thomas, founder of EduMatch and regional tech director in her school district! We talk about how EduMatch started, how she views her role in supporting teachers and students, and how she balances both of her gigs. EduMatch was created to help connect educators across the country and world and has grown into a publishing company, a podcasting group, and a source for professional learning. Mon, 06 Jun 2022 - 32min - 133 - S3 Reflection 14 - Josh - We need to do something different this time.
Season 03 Reflection 14 – Josh – We need to do something different this time. This is Josh. I am tired of kids being shot and killed in school. I’m tired of us as a nation being unable to do anything different about it. I am tired of people in power being unwilling to lead on this issue. This is like six minutes of venting. It probably has nothing new in it. You’ve probably said these same things yourself and at this point a ton of other people have said the same thing. But I didn’t want to talk about Professional Learning, classrooms management, or anything else to do with education this week. I don’t want to talk about punk or music. I want something to change. If you don’t want to listen to this episode, don’t. I don’t blame you. But if you are tired of seeing students being murdered then join me in doing something different. Make this the political issue you will vote on. Make this the thing you will knock on doors for a candidate for. Make this the thing that you will donate money to. Make keeping our kids safe and passing gun legislation that will protect our communities the thing you are willing to stand up for. S3 Episode 07 – Getting Knocked Down and Getting Back Up As punks in the pit we used to get knocked down and as educators it’s no different. The job isn’t easy and there are some things we can do to knock off the dust, pop up, and get back in the mix. In this episode, Josh and Mike discuss how this year has knocked them down a couple times and how they are working at getting back up each time. So dust yourself off and lets get back in the pit. S3 Reflection 06 – Josh on Feedback On this Punk Rock Reflection, Josh focuses on Feedback. As leaders, either in the classroom or on campus, we need to seek feedback and be prepared to work on what we hear from our stakeholder. Recently the admin team on his campus conducted listening session with parents, students, and staff. He dives into what they heard and how they are going to act on that feedback. So, take out your earplugs this is the kind of feedback you want to hear. S3 Episode 06 – Punk Rock Communication Punk had fliers, zines, and message boards to get the word out to the punk community. What do we have as educators and what are we doing to make sure we connect with our families and larger communities? Josh and Mike share why connecting, telling our school’s story, and enlisting the help of families and communities is how we make our schools better and stronger. They share some things they do and what they know others have tried. Break out your xerox machine, scissors, and tape so we can get the word out. S3 Reflection 05 - Mike on Connections On this Punk Rock Reflection, Mike dives into three topics: connections, boundaries, and laughter. He thinks maybe we should change the title of these (or at least for his reflections) to punk rock rants but hang with him, he has a lot to share on making connections with folks who are going through things just like you are, keeping those boundaries between work and home life, and of course finding some time to laugh about it all. Season 3 Episode 05 – Let’s Get Emo On this episode, Josh and Mike get emo and discuss emotional intelligence and psychological safety. How we recognize our own emotions and the emotions of other is an incredibly important part of working with students as an educator and in supporting and leading your staff as a school leader. Growing our own emotional intelligence as educators helps us create psychological safety for our students and staff so that we can support not only the academic growth of students but the emotional growth of the kids in our care as well. Mon, 25 Oct 2021 - 26min - 104 - S3 Collaboration 01 with Gabbi Buckley
S3 Collaboration 01 with Gabbi Buckley One of the awesome things we would see in punk is at shows when musicians from different bands would join forces on stage or when one of your favorite punk singers would lend their growl to some gang vocals on another band's record. We wanted to create that same thing here at PRC. On this punk rock collaboration, Josh brings on his wife and previous guest collaborator, Gabbi, to talk about how we get beyond putting a bags of chips in mail boxes and help teachers see that we appreciate what they do and how getting involved in our community can help school leaders share the story of their school and the educators dedicated to the students in it. Gabbi is in her third year serving as principal at Dobson High School in Mesa, AZ. Before that she was an assistant principal, team leader, and English teacher. The Buckley family dog, James Tiberius Vanderbeef (AKA Jimmy Beef), makes an appearance as well but he doesn’t have much of anything stimulating to add to the conversation. So get a bag of baby carrots for your dog so they will be quiet while you listen and let’s get to it because this episode is all that and a bag of chips. Mon, 27 Sep 2021 - 13min - 100 - S3 E03 - Reactions
Season 3 Episode 03 – Reactions It seems like we are all dealing with a lot this year. That instead of the normal juggling we do as educators we are actually juggling flaming chainsaws. You might have noticed that you're quickly going from zero to sixty. Or in Spinal Tap fashion, we go right to eleven. How we react is one thing we can work on. We are all coming to school, all of us, with stress, fears, worries, and the world on our shoulders. How we react to our students, our colleagues, and if you are a school leader, your staff, matters. On this episode Josh and Mike dive into how they are feeling, what they are seeing, and how they are trying to manage their reactions to what is flying at them in the classroom and at school. So, even though these go to eleven, maybe we shouldn’t. Intro Music - "Blackout" by Turnstile Outro Music - "T.L.C. Punk Rock Throwback Josh and Mike are taking a little summer vacation so here is one of their favorite episodes! Episode Seventeen of the Punk Rock Classrooms Podcast! "Circle Pits are for Classrooms!" Don't we want our classrooms and schools to be places that are engaging, active, and moving together with a common mission? Well, then we want them to be just like circle pits. In this episode Mike and Josh discuss how schools and classrooms are the perfect place for circle pits. Kids up and engaged, moving together, and picking each other up when they "fall" in the learning. We all have a role to play in the pit. You might be the band on the stage or maybe your administrator is. Heck, the kids can even be directing the pit from the stage. The key is that we are all in it together, we are working in unity, and we are their to pick each other up. So...let open up the pit. Punk Rock Reflection 28 - Mike: It's Okay to Stop On this Punk Rock Reflection, Mike shares two separate stories. One is professional and one is personal but they both taught him the same lesson. Sometimes it's okay to stop. We don't need to chase every thing, push as hard as we can, or do more than healthy. That is true for us all as educators and as humans. So, pump the brakes, slow down, and as a wise man once said "life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
