Mon, 16 Sep 2024 - 1h 36min - 93 - 93. Break Free song
BREAK FREE.Written by Michael Quigley.
[Verse 1]
Sunrise chases shadows through my rusty screen door.
Past the empty bottles rollin scattered on the floor
Last night I swore the devil had taken hold of me.
But today I'm fighting harder cause I wanna break free.
[Verse 2]
Twelve steps at a time through the fog of memories.
I've got a picture of my parents and I know they still believe.
The mirror shows a stranger I don't wanna know no more.
So I take my higher powers hand as I rise up off the floor.
[Chorus]
Whiskey on the shelf ain't no friend to me
Gonna trade these chains of sorrow for grace and purity.
Though the road is lonesome and the nights are long
With every step to freedom I'm gonna sing this sober redemption song.
[Verse 3]
The whiskey man can't get me now, well at least not for today.
Prayer and meditation keep that mean son of a bitch away.
[Chorus]
Whiskey on the shelf ain't no friend to me
Gonna trade these chains of sorrow for grace and purity.
Though the road is lonesome and the nights are long
With every step to freedom I'm gonna sing this sober redemption song.
[Bridge]
Gonna find my way now gonna make it through the night.
With my higher power in charge, I no longer have to fight.
I’m safe and protected, I’m no longer alone,
I can’t believe the whole time I was lost, I was only 12 steps from home.

Thu, 28 Apr 2022 - 43min - 29 - 29. Jimmy Daniels ( PART 1 )
Welcome home friend, to a very special edition of Sober Shares. Over the next four episodes you will hear a set of AA talks given by my late sponsor Jimmy Daniel’s. This type of AA talk is commonly referred to as “DOING THE STEPS”.
Jimmy got sober on June 10th, 1982 and went on to help thousands of alcoholics get and stay sober. I asked Jimmy to be my AA sponsor during my 5th year of sobriety. I was sponsoring myself at the time and having a hard time with life. I knew I needed help and was actively going to recovery meetings to try and find it. I heard Jimmy speak one night at the Unity Church of Dallas. That night changed the course of my life in and out of the rooms of AA. He reached down into my soul that night and shook me awake with his honesty about who he was, where he came from and maybe more importantly where he was going. I approached him in the parking lot after the meeting as he was walking to his car and asked him to be my AA sponsor. He said yes and we began our journey together that night. The first and only question he asked me that night was, “Michael, how is your prayer life”?Over the next several years he lead me closer and closer to my High Power and it was glorious.
Jimmy is my guy, he was everybody’s guy. His life story is an epic journey from the bottom of life to the glorious victory of a deep and heavy spiritual awakening that he ached to share with others.
This series of talks was recorded in 2005 and can be heard on the Sober Shares Podcast in episodes 29, 30, 31, and 32. We cover his childhood which was filled with some bullying events by kids and adults in his neighborhood. As Brad got older his anger and fear grew to uncomfortable levels. Brads physical gifts allowed him to attend a Division 1 school on a Football scholarship and he hoped that the new geographical location would allow him to create a new life. Brad was using Drugs and Alcohol in a destructive manner to get a break from the daily pressures of college life. His drug use ramped up during his football playing days in college. Brad went to several addiction treatment centers and was intervened upon by his family in friends. Brad was sent to Texas to be a patient in a long term treatment center for almost 11 months. Brad was able to get a fresh start on his sobriety in the treatment center and was able to take the first few steps towards Alcoholics Anonymous. Thu, 31 Mar 2022 - 3h 15min - 26 - 26. Damon Dobson
Damon Dobson SHARES 10 years of sobriety with us as we explore his drinking, which started at age 13. He moved so much as a child it was hard for him to put down roots and feel safe. Damon’s football and academic efforts helped to contain his drinking for a time while in High School. Blackouts are a big part of his story and the damage done was usually told to him after the episode had taken place. The blackouts caused problems with his family, law enforcement, and work. Damon realized he had an alcohol problem around age 19. Damon struggled with illegal street drugs and prescription drugs for a period of time. He has been fired for drinking, in jail for a time due to drinking alcohol and in big trouble with his family due to his drinking. Damon’s family held a secret intervention on him at a local hotel in Dallas. He tells us in detail how that went and his feelings about the experience. Damon has been able to turn his life around with the help of his higher power and the 12-steps. He as acquired so many tools to deal with life on life’s terms without using alcohol or drugs. He has learned to rely on family, friends, health care professionals, and God to keep him sober and happy. Life is still in session and hard sometimes, but he has found a way to be happy and keep going towards positive outcomes. His powerful description of his 9th step amends with his father and brother are my favorite parts of this episode.

Fri, 11 Feb 2022 - 1h 11min - 22 - 22. Patrice Olootu
Patrice SHARES her 3 years of sobriety with us and explains how alcohol almost destroyed her. Her drinking really took off during her college days and made it hard for her to concentrate on school or much else other than drinking. Her drinking progressed quickly and she decided to get married and have kids soon after her drinking escalated. Patrice did not believe she had a problem with drinking for a very long time because she was being a wife, having kids, and working at a good job. Soon after her last child was born things began to get harder to hold together. Loss of jobs, encounters with the police and frequent blackouts soon became a problem and made life very difficult. She decided to leave her family so she could drink the way she wanted to and deserted them for a time. Her family, law enforcement, and employers all noticed that she was an alcoholic long before she did. As her life came crashing down around her in 2012 she decided to seek help to try and get sober. That attempt at sobriety failed because she was not ready quit and was only seeking help to try and not get fired from a job. She began to drink soon after treatment and lasted a few more years on the active drinking plan. After a few more years of pain and drinking she asked for help from the Magdalen House. After a two week stay at Maggies House Patrice moved onto the 24 hour club and long term sober living after that. She has just recently returned home to her family as a sober mom and wife after 2.5 years of living in structured sober living housing in the North Texas. Please listen to this entire episode and hear a strong Texas woman tell us how her addiction to alcohol almost killed her and how she has overcome that with the help of God, AA, Sober living homes, and her loving family and friends. This is a true recovery miracle story!

Thu, 27 Jan 2022 - 2h 05min - 21 - 21. Leslie K
Leslie SHARES her 16 months of sobriety by telling us about getting sober DURING the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020. She explains that she believes she may have already been an alcoholic long before alcohol ever touched her lips. She has always been a seeker and that seeking is the reason she found alcohol and fell in love with it. Alcohol was fun and magical for many years until it turned on her and almost destroyed her. Leslie lived a double life for a long time and food was her first addiction, a few years later alcohol and drugs took on a larger roll in her life. Leslie survived a physical assault by an acquaintance that scared her and only increased her alcohol and drug use. Leslie realized she may have a problem with alcohol when she entered law school. As her drinking escalated Leslie was confronted by her younger brother who suggested Alcoholics Anonymous. As the pandemic raged and the world began to shut down, so did she. Her use of alcohol, food, and drugs went off the charts. She reached out for help and found it via her family and her Higher Power. Please listen to this story of healing and redemption and how being a sober mom is one of the biggest rewards she has been blessed with since getting sober.

Thu, 13 Jan 2022 - 2h 39min - 20 - 20. Casey W
Casey SHARES his 31 years of sobriety with us and shows it is possible to get sober as a teenager and stay sober. He began to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes early in life by modeling the behavior of adults that were close to him. He was lonely as a child due to his parents working long hours. Left to his own devices he began to allow his drinking to take on a larger roll in his life. The Alcohol was working for him at this point until things began to get out of control during his high school days. Phone calls home from school to report bad behavior, sleeping in his car sometimes, automobile crashes, and a general disintegration of his morals and behavior all led to him having to go to an AA meeting to GET THE HEAT OFF. Caseys sobriety date is 2 weeks after his first AA meeting. He was super uncomfortable during his first few AA meetings and had a few beers before he would attend those first few recovery meetings. He was very disappointed to find out that God was involved in this recovery plan. One of my favorite moments of this episode is when Casey said “it was not possible for me to love God as much as I loved drugs and alcohol so I did not love God anymore.” That is hitting bottom for real. His journey from that thought to where he is today is a miracle. We also talked about his love for young people in recovery and the importance of recovery based conferences and making new sober friends. We talk about how young people may not stay sober long term at first but while they are here they can gain a base knowledge about the AA recovery program and come back later in life when they hit another bottom. We talk about sponsorship and address the idea that “boys should sponsor boys and girls should sponsor girls”. We talk about relocating to another city or stare during long term sobriety and how drifting away from the AA program can be dangerous. Humility is a focal point of Caseys program and his step work. He explains that one way to think about how to define Humility is to “come back to god.” He points out that Humility is the foundation of all 12 steps and something we must develop to become truly happy. The 10th and 11th steps are covered in great detail and we explore the massive importance of quiet time in the morning “upon awakening”. This is a huge 3+ hour episode. I would love for you to listen to all of it please. I know it is a huge time commitment and I value your time and attention. This episode is packed with solid information from beginning to end. It's all good, so please invest in yourself and digest this whole episode, even thought it may take you few sessions to hear it all. You will be enriched, I promises. Stay blessed my Sober Friends.

Wed, 15 Dec 2021 - 3h 07min - 19 - 19. Jennifer Huddleston-Kelley
Jennifer SHARES her life story with us as we explore what long term sobriety looks like. We explore her drinking career and pin point the time she began to drink against her will. We cover dating in AA and how that worked out for her. Jennifer talked about how she has grown closer to her God via the growth opportunities of living life on life terms. We explore the dangers of sponsoring yourself and why that is not a good idea. God continues to meet her where she is on a daily basis and gives her the power to move forward and help others. Connection to others is a key component to her sobriety and how she stays close to her higher power. I know this is long episode, please listen to the whole thing even though it may take you several sittings. It is packed with solid information that will enlighten you. Mon, 22 Nov 2021 - 3h 31min - 18 - 18. Will Evans
Will SHARES his sober journey with us and how it all began while he was in treatment and he said to a counselor "I need help, I cannot live this alcoholic life anymore". His total surrender unlocked the willingness to follow his treatment teams advice to work the 12 steps and move to a sober living house in Atlanta, Georgia. Will developed rules for himself in early sobriety like never being alone in a car at night. His biggest fear was relapse because he knew to use again was death. Will realized that he did not need to have a full working knowledge of the AA program for it to work. Will turned his will and life over to the program and his treatment team during the first year of his sobriety and the blessing from the decision are still manifesting in his life today. At one point during our talk Will remarked that our addictions steel us from ourselves and that it is sobriety and God that can restore that broken connection. If we do the work and remove the things that block us off from the sunlight of the spirit then we can return to true freedom and peace of mind.

Sat, 30 Oct 2021 - 1h 57min - 17 - 17. Krista M
Krista SHARES her 25 years of sobriety and takes us on a journey though her life story. We learn about the early years of her drinking and how she could feel the fear leaving her body as she drank. The alcohol was a great comfort to her during the early years of her addiction. She remembers being able to breath, relax, and deal with life for the first time as she got drunk. Her drinking history was full of things that damaged her life and relationships towards the end of her active addiction. She talks about wanting to control everything and everyone. AA taught her to be sober and spiritual and Al-anon taught her how to be happy. During the early days of her recovery she asked a bunch of old-timers how she was going to stay sober for the upcoming weekend. They told her to pray. Krista said, “That will never work”. But she tried it anyway and she has been on a spiritual quest ever since. Krista placed herself in the middle of AA and has never left. Her sponsor has helped her recover in every area of her life and as Krista works with her sponsees she is able to stay focused and sharp in her program. She explains how her sponsor delivers feedback and perspective with the scalpel of truth and the antiseptic of love. She has allowed others to get to know her in the program which has helped release her shame of the things she did while drunk. When Krista is working with a new girl she allows herself to become a vessel or open channel for her Higher Powers love and forgiveness. Because when the love comes through you and flows into another person you get to experience it first, and that is the magic of AA. All you get is all you give, so give it all you got!

Thu, 21 Oct 2021 - 1h 53min - 16 - 16. Chico West
Chico West SHARES his 32 years of sobriety and explains how he was raised in a family where alcohol was part of the fabric of his life as a young person. The death of his father and aunt in separate alcohol related automobile accidents created fear and anger in him as a young boy. Chico started to drink regularly soon after his fathers accident and it helped ease the pain and sadness. Chico began to act like a wild child when he drank during the teen years of his life. His alcoholism escalated quickly and blackouts soon became a problem. After he assaulted a peace officer in Texas he knew it was time to ask for help, he was scared. Chico ended up at a treatment center called Sierra Tucson and then was transferred to a sober living facility in Atlanta, GA. This were he was introduced to twelve step AA recovery and began his journey to long term sobriety. Chico grew up with a strong belief in God, but he did not believe that he would be forgiven for his sins. As he gained traction in recovery and learned about forgiveness via the AA program his understanding of the Bible opened up in a whole new way and his life took off in a positive direction. Mr West has owned sober living houses, Drug and Alcohol treatment centers and provided assistance to facilitate interventions on loved ones. Addiction counselor Chico and his wife Shannon host a podcast called FILTER OPTIONAL that lends their years of experience to offer a unique perspective from both the filter (Shannon) and the no filter (Chico). Mr West no longer lives on the corer of fear and insecurity, he has indeed changed locations to the corner of Hope and Serenity.

Sun, 10 Oct 2021 - 2h 06min - 15 - 15. Stephanie Crawford
Stephanie SHARES her story of being a young woman in recovery who is doing the work to stay sober and help others on a daily basis. We discuss step one and what that looks like in the real world as a young person who is out there hustling and doing whatever it takes to survive. Stephanie has always been a seeker and she explored many faiths as a child looking for something to soothe her. She was alway trying to fill a GOD shaped hole in her life and was not able to fully do so until she got sober. We talk about being a single mother in recovery and how the balance between family, work, and sobriety takes help from others to make it happen. One of the most powerful statements she made in regard to whole family recovery was "THAT IT IS AS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO BE CONSISTENTLY PRESENT AS I WAS CONSISTENTLY ABSENT". We discuss dating and sex in sobriety and how much information is in the recovery literature to teach us about this important topic. This is a long interview and it may take you a few sittings to hear it all, but please stay with it because Stephanie brings a massive amount of great information to this episode. My favorite part of the interview was when we talked about how our addictions blocked us off from the sunlight of the Spirt and how we suffered from that, and in return when we got sober the things that blocked us off from that power were removed and we began to live again. That is when she made a statement which I will always remember. She told me, "IT IS NOT LIKE I HAVE MORE GOD IN ME TODAY, IT IS JUST THAT I HAVE LESS OF ME". In other words, her higher power has ALWAYS been there for her and she just had to learn how to access it via a spiritual experience.

Cary SHARES with us how a relationship with his Higher Power is the foundation of his emotional and physical sobriety. We talk about loneliness and how recovery can lead to a new life of fellowship and family. We explore the fine line between solitude and isolation in recovery and how that translates into why going to recovery meetings is important. The topic of sex, marriage and fatherhood are discussed in this episode at depth. We explore the topic of losing his brother to cancer and how that looked as Cary walked through that experience and learned many lessons while maintaining his sobriety. Finally, we learn that Cary made a decision in early soberly to not allow his past to define him and how he started doing estimable acts so he could learn how to feel better about himself and others.

He said to himself “I can not live like this anymore, I do not want to live like this anymore.” Gary was a young man when he got sober and he understood the causes of his woes were directly related to his alcohol addiction issues. Gary reached his breaking point and said to his Higher Power “God if you are there please help me.” Gary has been sober since that day.
