Last week, former video producer at The Verge Becca Farsace published a video explaining why she left that job to pursue becoming an independent creator. Since her path is the opposite of the one Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake chose, the three discuss the pros and cons of each direction on this week's PetaPixel Podcast.

This week, Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and Jaron Schneider discuss the difficulty brands have with working with media personalities that live outside of the "traditional" publication sphere. We also missed a lot of news over the last two weeks so we recap the biggest stories of August, including Sony launching new HandyCam camcorders for the first time in many years, new info on the Canon EOS R5 Mark II's dynamic range, and the revelation that almost half of Tamron's business comes from making lenses that aren't branded Tamron.

Over the past few weeks, we've been compiling the questions you want Adobe to answer related to its push into AI, recent controversies, and photography in general. We had a chance to sit down with Maria Yap, Adobe's Vice President of Digital Imaging, to give the company a chance to respond.
For over an hour, Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and Jaron Schneider chatted with Yap and presented her with a range of inquiries from the whole "skip the photoshoot" debacle, pricing and subscription strategy, Lightroom performance, and more. While Yap answers many of those in the podcast, she also wanted to be sure to give detailed answers in text form to a few that stood out as needing more context.
You can read those here: http://petapixel.com/2024/08/15/adobe-answers-your-questions-on-ai-controversies-and-photography-the-petapixel-podcast
We expect to speak with Adobe more frequently moving forward, so more questions and ideas for topics to discuss are welcome!

Today, Canon announced the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II – two highly anticipated cameras that say a lot about where the company stands on technology and, more importantly, how what it can provide photographers compares to its peers.
Each camera alone is a big deal for Canon but together they mark what is arguably the most important launch for the company in the digital photography era -- it is unquestionably the most important launch for Canon since it moved to mirrorless.
It was odd, then, that Canon gave US media so little time with the cameras. This week on The PetaPixel Podcast, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake join me to go over all of the details about the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II that we weren't able to talk about when we got hands-on time with them a couple of weeks ago in Phoenix, Arizona. We weren't able to dedicate the time to doing things as we would typically for camera launches because Canon only provided us about two hours of shooting time. If we attempted to record all of this information on site, we wouldn't have had any time to evaluate the equipment.
Beyond that, Canon wasn't able to provide concrete information to many of our questions in Phoenix. While we did eventually get final specifications this week, a lot was still missing. It doesn't seem like Canon wants to share everything and we'll have to get production units in hand to provide full information to everyone.
So because of our limited time and because we didn't have enough information when we had the R1 and R5 Mark II in-hand, we focused our efforts on explaining the most important aspects of each camera with the anticipation that we would spend a lot more time discussing those features in a podcast format.
Now that podcast is here, and we do our best to answer every question we think you might have about both cameras. Enjoy!

Because of Fujifilm's massive launch last week (and Sigma dropped a new 24-70mm f/2.8, too), the PetaPixel Podcast team had to record early and release later than usual, but that also meant a lot happened that they didn't get to talk about. That changes this week, because there was a ton to go over including Canon finally annoucning the development of the EOS R1, a camera that has been in development for at least three years. But that didn't go as smoothly as Canon perhaps would have preferred, as Adorama published fake specifications for the camera on their website and was then forced to make a public apology.
Beyond that, Adobe announced that Firefly generative AI tools were coming to Lightroom and Ricoh's new GRIII HDF is so popular that Japan had to resort to selling it by lottery.
This week, Panasonic announced the S9 and Chris and Jordan have some thoughts on it and also share how they think L-mount is doing now in mid 2024.In This Episode:

Fujifilm held another Fujikina event, this time in Australia, to announce four new products: the X-T50, the GFX100S II, XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR lens, and the GF 500mm f/5.6 R LM OIS WR. Two of these announcements, the lenses, were expected: Fujifilm is one of the few companies that publishes lens roadmaps well ahead of official product announcements. But the two cameras were less so, especially considering the GFX 100 II was announced so recently, seeing the GFX100S II may have come as somewhat of a surprise. The X-T50 is also a bit unexpected and it brings a new dial to the party that is just for film simulations.
There is a lot to discuss, and that's not even touching on the new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art II, which was also announced this week. It's a packed episode that you won't want to miss!In This Episode:

Before yesterday, the QuickTake 100 was the last time Apple built the hardware and complete, full-fledged software for an image capture device. Even though the iPhone has been equipped with a camera from the beginning, Apple has relied on third-party developers to make its camera hardware actually useable for anything other than quick snaps. The company dabbled in camera development but shied away from jumping all the way into the pool.
But with Final Cut Camera, Apple signaled very loudly that it is shifting its perspective: it's now making the software required to take full advantage of its capture hardware. There really is no other definition of a camera company than that.

News doesn't take a break, so this week, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake join me from the comfort of their hotel room on the coast of Vancouver Island. The biggest story? Canon's RF mount is finally open to third-party developers, but there is a catch. That said, there might be a good reason for Canon to make this choice, as its sales aren't doing great.
The trio also discusses Sigma and Nikon and Canon's response to the situation at RED Cinema. Finally, it can be hard for solo creators to work with larger teams when they're given the opportunity, so the three present their tips for making the most of those types of opportunities.

Almost every camera manufacturer makes its own photo editing software, but we aren't super enthused to use any of them -- especially if camera features are locked behind them.
As long as there is no real reason to ever download it and fire it up, it's actually not a big deal if a camera company's software doesn't work great. Photographers are using third-party software like Adobe Lightroom and Capture One a majority of the time and it probably isn't unusual for them to never feel the need to download first-party software.
That was until companies started locking features behind these programs. For example, Canon Dual Pixel RAW requires the use of Digital Photo Professional and Sony requires photographers fire up Imaging Edge if they want to use Pixel Shift Multi-Shot. Neither of these programs are intuitive to use and, perhaps worse, they are frustratingly slow and prone to crashing.
So, looking at the state of photography in 2024, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron asked themselves this: how is it acceptable that all these programs are just varying degrees of bad? The three dig into it while driving from San Jose to San Francisco in the first-ever PetaPixel Carcast!

When a listener asked Chris, Jordan, and Jaron to share how their careers (all the highs and lows) have gone over the years, the team decided it was worthy of a main story segment to itself. Speaking of creative journeys, OM SYSTEM has announced their last call for entries in their contest and community-based project Tell Your Story which is aimed at promoting and showcasing the capabilities of the OM SYSTEM OM-5 camera. Renowned for its class-leading performance and weather-sealed design capable of handling any environment, the OM-5 offers remarkable computational features such as Live ND and Starry Sky AF. Building upon the success of last year's initiative, Tell Your Story II strives to identify and empower emerging talents to advocate for OM SYSTEM products within their social communities. Through March 25th, 2024, photography enthusiasts of every skill level are invited to participate in Tell Your Story II. The project will be showcased on Instagram, on the @omsystem.generation channel. Candidates selected for Tell Your Story II will receive support from OM SYSTEM, including the OM-5 camera, lenses, and mentorship by esteemed OM SYSTEM Ambassadors, including Brooke Bartleson and Peter Baumgarten, to bring their projects to life. Details about the program and how to participate can be found at explore.omsystem.com/petapixel. Did you know that Chris Niccolls was very disinterested in photography for most of his young life? Pre-orders are live right now, with shipments beginning in late February. Every half-decade or so, medium format experiences some kind of "resurgence," and thanks mainly to Fujifilm's excellent GFX 100 II, many photographers might be interested in jumping over to the large sensor cameras. With Hasselblad's update to the 907x system last week, the team discusses where each medium format system resides, who they're for, what are they are good at (and what do manufacturers want them to do), and what the future of medium format might be. Is it doing just fine on its current trajectory? Would it be a fantastic platform to bring back a TLR-style camera body? Is it the one place a DSLR still makes sense? Chris, Jordan, and Jaron debate. - 27 - The PetaPixel Awards: The Best of Photography in 2024
Thanks again to our podcast sponsor, OM SYSTEM, makers of the ultimate compact camera for outdoor enthusiasts, the OM-5. Recently, we published an awesome film in which we followed OM SYSTEM Ambassador Matt Suess as he explored Idaho’s stunning Sawtooth Mountains with his OM-5. The OM-5’s compact size and class-leading IP53 weather sealing was a critical piece of Matt’s gear as he hiked, biked, and flew in a small plane through the Sawtooth Mountains. Check out PetaPixel Travel Editor Michael Bonocore’s story about the adventure, watch the film, and see behind-the-scenes photos today on PetaPixel. And make sure to visit explore.omsystem.com/petapixel for the complete list of incredible holiday savings available for OM SYSTEM cameras, lenses, and more! -- We are proud to announce the results of the third-annual PetaPixel Awards where we give honors to a small list of the best new photography products released in the last year as voted by the PetaPixel staff. Started in 2021, the PetaPixel Awards are designed to be exclusive. Unlike other awards that create a laundry list of categories that give every company a chance to be a winner, and we only pick seven products: best in camera, prime lens, zoom lens, smartphone, computer, software, and photography accessory. We are also continuing a final category that we started last year called “Photography Trend of the Year.” Methodology: Because PetaPixel’s staff is entirely composed of current and former photographers, all were asked to vote for first, second, and third place across all categories. First-place votes were worth five points, second worth three, and third worth one. In all cases, those who deal directly with sales and marketing were excluded from voting to retain objectivity. Visit explore.omsystem.com/petapixel for the complete list of savings! It's been a busy week in the photography world, highlighted by the launch of the Sony a9 III. As the first full-frame CMOS sensor camera with a global shutter made for photography, we had to ask: is this the start of widespread adoption of the tech? Beyond the wider implications of global shutters, Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and Jaron Schneider answer some of your biggest questions about Sony's new sensor technology including how it performs at high ISOs (and low ISOs), what problems beyond rolling shutter are actually solved by a global shutter sensor, who the camera will be best for, what some of the downsides of the camera are, and more. When the M11-P launched as the first camera to support the Content Authenticity Initiative's (CAI) CP2A technology, a lot of questions immediately flooded in: what does it do? How does it work? Does it protect copyrights? Is it like cryptocurrency? The answer is actually surprisingly simple, but the CAI and the companies that have partnered with it have not done the best job of explaining how the technology will actually work for the average photographer and general photography consumer. In this week's podcast, the trio discusses how this system works, how it can be put into cameras, how people are intended to interact with it once the photos are out in the world, and the remaining roadblocks the CAI has to navigate to make the CP2A a standard the average person understands. This week on the PetaPixel Podcast, the team comes together for a special episode from Apple Park! Chris, Jordan, and Jaron spend some time discussing topics they didn't get to mention in their first impressions of Apple's latest handhelds.
While there is plenty to say about the new iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max, the trio also needed to talk about the new medium format Fujifilm GFX 100 II, a camera that grabbed headlines despite releasing the same day as Apple's big event. A spirited discussion, the team debates who this camera is actually for, what it is best at, and how it fits into an already pretty crowded photo market, especially at its $7,500 asking price.
Finally, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron chat with photographer Blair Bunting and answer some of your questions about his flight to the edge of space.
We used Riverside to record our interview with photographer Blair Bunting.

00:00 - Intro 05:23 - What it's like moving from a 2014 DSLR to a 2023 mirrorless camera: what a leap! 10:19 - An international photo competition was letting its own judges enter and win 13:58 - Chris and Jordan made their first documentary! 46:18 - What have you been up to? 51:06 - Tech support 1:02:23 - Never read the commentsWed, 06 Sep 2023 - 1h 16min - 13 - What the Heck is Sony THINKING?!
Yesterday, Sony added two more cameras to its line of interchangeable cameras which brought the line to no less than 18 total choices from entry-level through professional. That is just too many.
Today’s podcast episode is once again brought to you by OM SYSTEM. For over 80 years, OM SYSTEM has been pushing the limits of technology to put the most advanced cameras and lenses in the hands of photographers and visual creators. Whether photographing grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness, documenting the most remote landscapes in the world, or capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments with your family, the OM SYSTEM line of cameras and lenses was designed for the task.
OM SYSTEM is making truly incredible advancements that make the lives of us photographers both easier and more exciting. Visit explore.omsystem.com/PetaPixel to learn more.
Sony has made it a company policy to discontinue camera bodies and lenses as infrequently as possible, which has the advantage of giving buyers more choice when it comes to determining how to spend their money. Continuing to sell the Sony a7 II, for example, even though there a7 IV is the most recent addition to that section of the line allows a photographer to decide to spend less on a camera if they don't think they need as many features.
But on the flip side, it results in a camera line that has an amorphous beginning and end. Seeing so many choices ends up becoming more of a detriment than a benefit. In this week's PetaPixel Podcast, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron talk about this problem and do their best to point out how difficult it has become to recommend a specific camera for a specific use case given the bloated nature of Sony's camera line.
Additionally, the trio talks the latest news including the booming popularity of Ricoh's GR III and a new lens patent from Canon that is easily the weirdest design they've ever seen.
We use Riverside to record all our episodes in our online recording studio.
Discussed in this Episode:
00:00 - Intro 3:59 - The GR III is so popular, Ricoh can't keep it in stock 8:42 - Demand for cameras is exploding in China 10:28 - Canon's latest lens patent is one of the weirdest designs we've ever seen 14:47 - Sony completes the G Master zoom trifecta 21:15 - Sony expands the "Compact" line with two new additions 30:00 - What is Sony thinking? This week, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron tackle the topic of lens breathing and whether or not it is "blown" out of proportion (pun intended). You see, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki spoke with PetaPixel contributor and former Imaging Resource publisher David Etchells, and Yamaki says that YouTube reviewers might be putting too much emphasis on lens breathing, which could take away development time and emphasis from other important lens manufacturing endeavors. Chris and Jordan obviously have an opinion on that, and they weigh in.
Additionally, the trio talk about the "scam" of printer ink, how Western Digital is now being sued by three groups for the SanDisk SSD fiasco, and Chris and Jordan explain what other lens terms mean so you can be better informed when you listen to their next review.

Whether it be for sentimental reasons, because it's so practical, or because it has become a valuable collector's item, most photographers have at least one piece of gear they'll never get rid of. While Jordan selected an item of extreme sentimental value, Chris went with a piece of equipment that was half that, half practical. Jaron Schneider, on the other hand, went fully practical with the prompt and selected an item that he won't head out on a photo or video trip without.

Since it began its full scientific operations at the second Lagrange point (L2), about one million miles from Earth last year, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has enchanted people around the world. Webb’s photos have inspired many people to learn more about space and look at the night sky with unprecedented wonder and curiosity.
Webb’s stunning images are not beamed to Earth from the $10 billion space telescope in full color. In fact, Webb’s detectors capture monochromatic photos that are exceedingly dark.
Thanks to expert image processors Joe DePasquale and Alyssa Pagan at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, the dark gray raw images come to life in unbelievable ways. Chris, Jordan, and Jaron sit down with Alyssa and Joe to talk about their incredible job, including how they prepare images for distribution, the challenges they face, and how different the JWST is from previous telescopes.
