On this episode of They Walk Among America… We are all familiar with the feeling of being watched. Most of us recognise that niggling suspicion as nothing more than an irrational thought. But for others, their worst fears are sometimes confirmed. For one young woman in New Hampshire, a nightmare becomes a reality when she realizes she’s not only being watched, but she’s being watched from inside her own home…

On this episode of They Walk Among America…It is often said that money is the root of all evil. Whether in the relentless pursuit of wealth or driven by desperation to maintain it, individuals can find themselves committing unimaginable acts. The Roseboro family seemed to possess everything one could desire: a blissful marriage, a nice home, and a thriving business worth millions. During weekends, Michael and Jan Roseboro frequently spent quality time in their backyard with their children, engaging in activities such as swimming or simply enjoying each other's company. Nevertheless, appearances can be deceiving. Some who live a life of luxury are never content, and they are willing to do anything to get what they want…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… The shocking murder of two doctors goes unsolved for years. The story of what happened only comes to light when a member of a confidential group goes against the grain and tells the police what they know. But even with evidence supporting a confession made to many, privilege can trump the truth….

Thu, 12 Oct 2023 - 45min - 105 - Black Widow
On this episode of They Walk Among America… Ethylene glycol is a colorless and odorless compound with a sweet taste commonly found in antifreeze. Ingesting a sufficient quantity of it can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs, organ damage, seizures, and, ultimately, death. The effects of this poison typically manifest within one to twelve hours after ingestion, initially impacting the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. Within twelve to 24 hours, ethylene glycol starts affecting the heart and lungs, while toxic calcium oxalate crystals begin to form. After 24 hours or more, the metabolized poison takes its toll on the kidneys, and death becomes possible at any stage. This type of poisoning results in a slow and agonizing demise, yet it often remains imperceptible. One particularly troubling aspect is that antifreeze poisoning does not readily show up on standard toxicology tests. Consequently, if a death doesn't appear suspicious, the presence of antifreeze poisoning may go undetected…

Thu, 05 Oct 2023 - 1h 20min - 103 - Mother's Intuition
On this episode of They Walk Among America… It's often said that the bond between a mother and her child is incomparable, even transcending the boundaries of life and death. A mother forges a connection with her child that defies any worldly explanation. Such is the power of a mother's intuition. In 2004, this truth manifested in a remarkable way when a mother encountered a girl who bore an uncanny resemblance to someone she knew all too well. Having tragically lost her own daughter following a fire in 1997, she was struck by an overwhelming sense of familiarity upon seeing this girl…

Thu, 28 Sep 2023 - 53min - 102 - Heartbreak
On this episode of They Walk Among America… When people with children embark on new relationships, the children involved often require an adjustment period. This may involve adapting to new routines, becoming part of a blended family, and getting used to an entirely new dynamic. Additionally, the new adult in their lives might bring unresolved issues from their own past. At about 3 PM on July 8th, 2009, Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a scene following reports of a domestic incident. When first responders arrived, they were shocked to find a young child had been caught up in a situation that had nothing to do with her. The case sent shockwaves throughout the community, shedding light on the unfortunate reality that far too often, innocent children can become collateral damage in adult affairs…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Every individual possesses unique fingerprints, making them invaluable in resolving homicide investigations. The year 1911 marked a significant milestone as U.S. courts officially recognized fingerprints as a dependable method of identification. Advancements continued into the 1970s when forensic professionals pioneered a novel technique—fingerprinting the deceased. This innovative approach incorporated chemical powders and photosensitive paper to capture prints. A pivotal moment occurred in 1978, as forensic experts in Miami, Florida, adopted this revolutionary method while probing a triple murder case in a local spa. At first, the crime appeared to be a robbery gone wrong. However, the examination by the forensic experts revealed that they were looking for somebody much closer to home…

Thu, 14 Sep 2023 - 51min - 100 - Harsh Reality
On this episode of They Walk Among America… On the evening of July 24th, 2000, Sarasota police officers were dispatched to a house on Grand Cayman Street following a 911 call from a local resident who said a young man had told him he believed his aunt had been killed. After forcing their way into the property, they found a woman lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen, beaten to death. It didn’t take long for the victim to be identified, and it took even less time for the media to pick up the story. 52-year-old Nancy Campbell-Panitz had appeared on national television just hours before she was found dead. Her ex-husband and his new wife had confronted her on an episode of The Jerry Springer Show, and it seemed as though their troubles had followed them back home…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Nestled in the heart of Somers, New York, The Turner House stands as a remarkable testament to the grandeur of the 19th century. This pristine white-framed home was crafted by a wealthy Gentry farmer, and its presence exudes a sense of affluence and historical significance. Spanning an impressive 4,731 square feet, The Turner House rests on a sprawling 2.05-acre estate. The front of the home is framed by majestic and age-old trees, providing shade and ensuring an air of privacy. However, The Turner House is not without a dark past. In 1980, this once tranquil abode became the haunting scene of a gruesome murder, a murder that sent shockwaves throughout the peaceful bedroom community…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… The rural roadside was illuminated by the flames consuming the trailer, and the blue and red flashing lights of the emergency vehicles. It was a chaotic scene as people desperately tried to rescue the teenage girls believed to be trapped inside. As firefighters dashed towards the blaze, someone on the road noticed a girl lying face down in the mud. When paramedics noticed a gaping 6-inch wound in her abdomen, they believed she had been injured in the fire somehow, but when a surgeon found a shotgun wad inside her body at the hospital, it was clear that the fire had been set intentionally to cover a horrific crime…

Thu, 17 Aug 2023 - 39min - 96 - No Choice
On this episode of They Walk Among America… It was the mid-afternoon of Wednesday, June 6th, 1962, in the Jamaica Estates North area of Queens. The street was cordoned off outside of one of the large ranch-style houses on Union Turnpike. The road had been torn up by heavy machinery, and construction workers were standing idly by. It would have been reasonable to assume that there were maintenance works underway if not for the heavy police presence. Crime scene investigators were reaching down into the sewer line that was flowing from the house and pulling out pieces of human flesh. The homeowner was nowhere to be found, but the police suspected that the victim was a teenage girl who had been brought to the residence for an illegal abortion…

On this episode of They Walk Among America…Teachers hold a significant role in the lives of young children, second only to parents in terms of influence. Within the school environment, they are entrusted with the care and education of children, nurturing their growth and safeguarding their well-being. Consequently, parents place a considerable amount of trust in their children's teachers, relying on them to act in the best interests of their students. However, in 1998, a shocking violation of that trust unfolded in a school in Seattle, sending shockwaves worldwide. The case served as a stark reminder of the double standards that exist within society when it comes to female sexual predators…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Many factors can be listed as motives in murder cases, such as greed, love, or revenge. But, when it comes to family annihilators, there is no way to make a jury understand why someone would commit such a horrendous act. When the person accused of wiping out generations of the same family happens to be a pillar of the community, a person in a position of trust and power, any sense of security is lost - but faith is not…

On this episode ofThey Walk Among America… In the quiet middle-class neighbourhood of Queens Village, New York City, Harriet Mulhauser was just getting ready for the day ahead. It was March 20th, 1927, and Harriet’s morning was disturbed by a sharp knock on her front door. Opening it, she was greeted by a distressing sight – a look of terror etched across the face of her nine-year-old neighbour, Lorraine Snyder. Lorraine told Harriet that something had happened to her mother, and she needed immediate assistance…

Letecia Stauch was arrested in March 2020, and just over two weeks later, Gannon’s remains were found in a suitcase beneath a bridge in Florida, over 1,300 miles from his home in Colorado Springs. It was evident that 11-year-old Gannon had suffered horrific violence before his death, but his stepmother continued to try and avoid responsibility throughout the investigation and even after her arrest. After waiting three long years for justice, Gannon’s family were forced to sit through 20 days of grueling testimony and blatant lies about his final moments… (Part 2 of 2)

On this episode of They Walk Among America… One balmy afternoon in October 1946, one rancher set out on a routine trip from his farm in Caldwell, Idaho, to his ranch in Jordan Valley. The desolate highway stretched out before him, except for the occasional passing car. As he rounded a bend in the road, he observed a man pulled over to the side with his hood up, indicating trouble. As he drew closer, he recognised the man as somebody who had previously worked for him. He slowed down his car and approached to offer assistance. After crouching down to examine the engine, he felt a heavy object crash down onto his skull, sending a wave of pain throughout his body….

On this episode of They Walk Among America… In the early 1990s, Hawaii welcomed millions of visitors to Big Island and the other six inhabited islands. Kilauea volcano on Big Island has been erupting regularly since 1983, making it the world's most active volcano. While most eruptions are self-contained, the unpredictable volatility of nature makes the volcano seem like the most dangerous thing on the island. But a horrific crime in 1991 proved that was not the case. The laid-back feel of Hawaii could lull someone into a false sense of security, making them a victim of those who seek to do them harm…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Nestled between the deep blue Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil Isle of Wight Bay lies Ocean City in Maryland. It’s a lively resort town that bustles with activity, particularly over Memorial Day weekend. Crowds of eager party-goers from across the nation flock to this coastal haven, drawn by the lure of white-sand beaches and the nightlife. Martha Crutchley and Joshua Ford were among the swarm of revellers who descended upon Ocean City over Memorial Day weekend 2002. While there, the couple struck up a friendship with another vacationing couple after they agreed to cover their bus fare. Little did they know, however, that this simple act of kindness would lead them directly into a nightmare…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Hundreds of thousands of people go missing each year in the United States. Most of those people will be found within the first few days, and the majority of missing persons cases do not involve suspicious circumstances. In some instances, a person is recovered, having met a tragic fate, and while the death of a loved one is incomprehensible, it gives some sense of closure. For others whose loved ones remain missing, a heartbreaking truth would be easier than never knowing at all. As years or decades pass without answers, the continual feeling of loss they carry is matched only by the hope they cling to. Now more than ever, with improvements in policing and forensics, cold cases are being solved, and families are getting long-awaited resolution…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… It was the summer of 1973 in Three Forks, Montana, and the Jaeger family were on a month-long camping vacation, touring the west. On June 25th, they were camping in Missouri Headwaters State Park, a recreational area comprising 535 acres of woodland alongside the Missouri River. The State Park is known as a popular haunt for vacation makers, wanting to be close to nature, and is replete with bountiful fishing spots, hiking trails, hunting areas, and water-related activities. Just five years earlier, the state park had become a no-go zone after a little boy was stabbed in the arm and then clubbed to death after an unknown person cut a hole in his tent. But by now, that was just a faded memory, and the state park was as popular as ever…

As they approached the rear of the building, they were stunned to see a badly injured woman lift herself off of the concrete below an open window on the second storey. She was bleeding and nude, but the adrenaline coursing through her body allowed her to run towards the flashing blue lights on the street. She was quickly taken into the back of an ambulance. Before the woman could tell the police what had happened, she collapsed and became unresponsive. Apart from the smoke that clung to her hair and skin, the emergency responders could smell something else - bleach…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… In the 1990s, life in Port St. John was placid; on Sundays, the local radio only played gospel tunes, and in the evenings, residents sat outside their homes under the humid heat and chatted with their neighbours while children raced through the streets on their bicycles. Serious crimes in Port St. John were very rare, but on January 6th, 1999, a crime sent shockwaves throughout the close-knit community. Frieda LeBouf was at home when she heard a frantic knock on her front door. She opened the door to find her neighbour’s two young children, who exclaimed that a tragic accident had happened at the family home…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… With a population of around 10,000 people, Willoughby is relatively small compared to other cities in the state, but it is one of Lake County’s fastest-growing cities. It’s a good place to raise a family, and there are many peaceful neighborhoods along the river where young couples settle down and make their homes. The houses on Chagrin Drive were built in the 1950s, and though most have been renovated, they still retain the old-style charm with bay windows and large decks allowing residents to truly soak in the beauty of the river and the surrounding nature. Residents on Chagrin Drive were lucky enough to count on each other if anything went wrong, but some things occur behind closed doors that even the nosiest neighbors could never imagine…

The woman appeared concerned, and as it turned out, she had every reason to be. When police entered the home, they found the husband motionless in bed. Nearby, there was a glass of luminous green liquid…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… It’s hard to imagine a more terrifying scenario for parents than someone breaking into their home and harming their children. If the worst happens, we can only hope that the people responsible for catching the perpetrator are pursuing the truth, no matter how unlikely it seems. In some cases, it’s more palatable to those investigating to believe that the blame lies with the people closest to the victim, and often easier to make the evidence fit a theory than to form a theory from the evidence. While more and more cases are being solved retrospectively through advancements in forensic science, some wrongs can never be righted because of procedural and prosecutorial errors. Sometimes justice can never be served...

On this episode of They Walk Among America… In August 1997, the local police received a tip-off from concerned acquaintances and family members of a wealthy widow who had not been seen around town for quite some time. After assisting the missing woman's estranged son in assuming guardianship of the enormous property on the outskirts of town, the Sheriff's deputies were able to gain access to the house. Once inside, they could see that the house appeared to have been empty for months as mail dating back to the previous year had accumulated, and food inside the fridge had been expired since November…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… It was June 26th, 1967, and Margaret Harold and Mast. Sergt. Roy D. Hudson were parked along a lonely dirt road around 12 miles west of Annapolis, Maryland. As they chatted, a man appeared from the woodland surrounding the road and began hastily walking towards them. He was wearing what looked like work clothing, and he appeared to be irate. He hollered to the couple that they couldn’t be parked there. Roy apologised, and as he went to climb back into the car, the unfamiliar man asked for a ride back to the highway. Roy told the man no, while Margaret added that there was no room for him in the car. Things then suddenly took a much more ominous turn…

In late 2010, a middle-aged man moved into his daughter's college dorm and created what has all the hallmarks of a cult. Over the decade that followed, he extorted millions of dollars from vulnerable young adults through violence, psychological torture, and forced sex work. Actress and Director Elisabeth Rohm narrates Law&Crime's 6-part investigative series, which draws from thousands of pages of transcripts, exhibits, audio files, and video recordings from a federal trial and explores the actions and motives of Larry Ray. On this episode of They Walk Among America… Dawn was just beginning to break in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at around 5:30AM on June 25th, 1979, when a phone call was made to the police. The 911 operator picked up the phone to be met by a man's voice. He ominously commented that police could find a woman’s body in a parked car at a local motel. The officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the Host Inn hotel, a large convention centre motel located around 3 miles from Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Harrisburg Interchange. They approached the red 1978 Plymouth Horizon hatchback and immediately observed that the trunk was partially open. As the officers got closer, they saw a pale arm hanging out of the vehicle. They slowly opened up the trunk to reveal the naked body of a woman…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… They say that there is no greater love than the love a parent has for their child. There are few parents in this world that would not lay down their own life for their child. That’s the role that a parent takes on when they welcome their child into this world. But what happens when these roles are reversed? What happens when the protector becomes the protected?…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… The 1960s brought incredible change to America. New programs to help the less fortunate access jobs, education and healthcare were introduced, and civil rights movements were gaining traction across the states. It was a decade of rebellion and hope for a better world, young people shunned war in favor of free love, and people strived for revolution. America was evolving and dividing, but one thing was sure to capture the attention of the nation; the complicated case of one man accused of two love triangle murders, in two different states…

As the firefighters proceeded through the apartment complex, smoke began to billow out from an apartment on the 15th floor. On this episode of They Walk Among America… Huntington Hartford rubbed shoulders with some of the elites during his “playboy” years throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In photographs, he posed alongside Salvador Dalí and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In the wake of his father’s death in 1922, he had become one of the heirs to the estate of his grandfather, George Huntington Hartford, who headed the great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. At just 12 years old, Hartford inherited $90 million, equivalent to around $1.25 billion today. In 1942, he purchased a 160-acre estate in the picturesque Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and named it The Pines. On the morning of July 20th, 1959, Henry Brugger and Salvador Senjas were beginning their caretaking shift at the lavish estate. As they worked outside under the sultry summer sun, a man scrambled up Sullivan Canyon, which fronted The Pines. He looked extremely dishevelled as he muttered something about an accident at the cliff ledge…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… There is nothing more terrifying for a parent than watching your child become critically unwell and knowing there is nothing you can do to help them. It’s important that doctors report any suspected abuse to the authorities, but what if their judgement is based on inaccuracies? To lose a child is an unthinkable tragedy, and to be accused of causing their death is another…

A single gunshot echoed through the house, and by the time Betty got to the front door, her husband was lying on his back with his hands clutched to a wound that was bleeding profusely on his chest…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Chowchilla was a rural town in Madera County, California. In 1976 the population of the farming community was around 5,000, spread across sprawling acres of land. Most of those living in Chowchilla had been born and raised there, in the Central Valley. The isolated countryside didn’t provide much for kids to do during the summer months, so many enrolled in summer school. Dairyland Elementary had been assigned as the location for classes in the summer of 76 and over 125 children signed up to attend. 26 of those pupils would become victims of one of the most notorious mass kidnappings in US history…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… A single block located between 5th and 6th avenue on 47th Street in New York is known as the Diamond District. The bustling epicentre of New York's diamond and jewellery sales industry sprang up on 47th Street in the 1920s and continues to be one of the most popular locations for jewellery shoppers today. The Diamond District expanded during WWII when thousands fled Nazi-occupied Europe and set up shop in New York City. The Diamond Dealers Club, which was founded in the 1930s as a place for dealers and brokers to store their diamonds, has described the arrival of new traders as follows: “Their influx into America, together with the unprecedented economic boom that took place in the country in the post-war period, shifted the balance of the diamond trade from Western Europe to New York. Indeed, immigration has long been a decisive factor in the growth of the U.S. diamond sector, and the DDC, both then and today, traditionally has served as a melting pot for a diverse group of nationalities and cultures”.Many store owners and workers in the Diamond District were Orthodox or Hasidic Jews. A small place that contained such valuable products was always bound to attract undesirables, but in 1977 the disappearance of two diamond cutters proved that pressure was only good for diamonds…

It was the 23rd of July, 2007, a Monday, so Mary knew that it was going to be a busy day. By 9:30AM, there was already a line of customers, ready to go about their financial transactions after the weekend. A middle-aged woman approached the counter. Mary noticed immediately that she had a terrified look in her eyes. Her face was ashen. The woman quietly told Mary that her name was Jennifer Petit, and that she and her family were being held hostage at their home by two men. She needed to withdraw $15,000 to bring to the men, one of whom was in her car in the parking lot waiting for her to return. Jennifer told Mary that if police were contacted, her children and husband would be killed...

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Sabre Springs is a planned high-end community in San Diego, California. It’s a typical residential community where many people go to raise their families within close proximity to employment and good schools. Around 9,000 people were living in Sabre Springs in February 2002 when something destroyed the community's perceived serenity. Before then, parents had no issues with letting their children play in the neighborhood, or leaving a window unlocked in the two-storey tract homes. Children went to school and came home to play with friends, cycling their bikes past neighbor's houses, never aware of the danger lurking behind closed doors until it was too late…

In a second trial, several years later, Timothy Hennis would be acquitted of all charges. Advances in forensic analysis would be made over the intervening years, but was it enough to catch the person responsible?… (Part 2 of 2)
