On this episode of They Walk Among America… Ethylene glycol is a colorless and odorless compound with a sweet taste commonly found in antifreeze. Ingesting a sufficient quantity of it can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs, organ damage, seizures, and, ultimately, death. The effects of this poison typically manifest within one to twelve hours after ingestion, initially impacting the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. Within twelve to 24 hours, ethylene glycol starts affecting the heart and lungs, while toxic calcium oxalate crystals begin to form. After 24 hours or more, the metabolized poison takes its toll on the kidneys, and death becomes possible at any stage. This type of poisoning results in a slow and agonizing demise, yet it often remains imperceptible. One particularly troubling aspect is that antifreeze poisoning does not readily show up on standard toxicology tests. Consequently, if a death doesn't appear suspicious, the presence of antifreeze poisoning may go undetected…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Within the Glastenbury Mountain, the Long Trail carves its path — a renowned 272-mile hiking trail that winds its way through the length of Vermont, passing over the summit of the mountain. While the area is considered an exceptionally peaceful and beautiful part of the country, a shroud of mystery envelopes its tree-covered depths. Between the years of 1945 and 1950, a phenomenon gripped the idyllic location – a series of mysterious disappearances. All of these people disappeared within a certain area within the mountain, an area which has become known as the “Bennington Triangle”...

On this episode of They Walk Among America… One balmy afternoon in October 1946, one rancher set out on a routine trip from his farm in Caldwell, Idaho, to his ranch in Jordan Valley. The desolate highway stretched out before him, except for the occasional passing car. As he rounded a bend in the road, he observed a man pulled over to the side with his hood up, indicating trouble. As he drew closer, he recognised the man as somebody who had previously worked for him. He slowed down his car and approached to offer assistance. After crouching down to examine the engine, he felt a heavy object crash down onto his skull, sending a wave of pain throughout his body….

On this episode of They Walk Among America… At 3:18 PM on January 13th, 1996, Arlington police received a call from 78-year-old Jimmie Kevil, a retiree living on Ruth Street for over 50 years. Kevil told the 911 dispatcher that he had just seen a man driving a black pickup abduct a little girl off of her bicycle close to his house. Arlington police officers arrived at the scene within minutes, and as they retrieved the girl’s bike, a man pulled up and told them, “That’s my granddaughters bike”. Her name was Amber Hagerman…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… It was the summer of 1973 in Three Forks, Montana, and the Jaeger family were on a month-long camping vacation, touring the west. On June 25th, they were camping in Missouri Headwaters State Park, a recreational area comprising 535 acres of woodland alongside the Missouri River. The State Park is known as a popular haunt for vacation makers, wanting to be close to nature, and is replete with bountiful fishing spots, hiking trails, hunting areas, and water-related activities. Just five years earlier, the state park had become a no-go zone after a little boy was stabbed in the arm and then clubbed to death after an unknown person cut a hole in his tent. But by now, that was just a faded memory, and the state park was as popular as ever…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… The Fort Collins police and Poudre Fire Authority were dispatched to the scene at around 5:33 AM. As they approached the rear of the building, they were stunned to see a badly injured woman lift herself off of the concrete below an open window on the second storey. She was bleeding and nude, but the adrenaline coursing through her body allowed her to run towards the flashing blue lights on the street. She was quickly taken into the back of an ambulance. Before the woman could tell the police what had happened, she collapsed and became unresponsive. Apart from the smoke that clung to her hair and skin, the emergency responders could smell something else - bleach…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… With a population of around 10,000 people, Willoughby is relatively small compared to other cities in the state, but it is one of Lake County’s fastest-growing cities. It’s a good place to raise a family, and there are many peaceful neighborhoods along the river where young couples settle down and make their homes. The houses on Chagrin Drive were built in the 1950s, and though most have been renovated, they still retain the old-style charm with bay windows and large decks allowing residents to truly soak in the beauty of the river and the surrounding nature. Residents on Chagrin Drive were lucky enough to count on each other if anything went wrong, but some things occur behind closed doors that even the nosiest neighbors could never imagine…

She explained that he had locked himself in their bedroom over the weekend after an argument, and that on Monday, he never showed up at their shared workplace and was refusing to pick up the phone. The woman appeared concerned, and as it turned out, she had every reason to be. When police entered the home, they found the husband motionless in bed. Nearby, there was a glass of luminous green liquid…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… It’s hard to imagine a more terrifying scenario for parents than someone breaking into their home and harming their children. If the worst happens, we can only hope that the people responsible for catching the perpetrator are pursuing the truth, no matter how unlikely it seems. In some cases, it’s more palatable to those investigating to believe that the blame lies with the people closest to the victim, and often easier to make the evidence fit a theory than to form a theory from the evidence. While more and more cases are being solved retrospectively through advancements in forensic science, some wrongs can never be righted because of procedural and prosecutorial errors. Sometimes justice can never be served...

On this episode of They Walk Among America… In August 1997, the local police received a tip-off from concerned acquaintances and family members of a wealthy widow who had not been seen around town for quite some time. After assisting the missing woman's estranged son in assuming guardianship of the enormous property on the outskirts of town, the Sheriff's deputies were able to gain access to the house. Once inside, they could see that the house appeared to have been empty for months as mail dating back to the previous year had accumulated, and food inside the fridge had been expired since November…

Hudson were parked along a lonely dirt road around 12 miles west of Annapolis, Maryland. As they chatted, a man appeared from the woodland surrounding the road and began hastily walking towards them. He was wearing what looked like work clothing, and he appeared to be irate. He hollered to the couple that they couldn’t be parked there. Roy apologised, and as he went to climb back into the car, the unfamiliar man asked for a ride back to the highway. Roy told the man no, while Margaret added that there was no room for him in the car. Things then suddenly took a much more ominous turn…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Dawn was just beginning to break in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at around 5:30AM on June 25th, 1979, when a phone call was made to the police. The 911 operator picked up the phone to be met by a man's voice. He ominously commented that police could find a woman’s body in a parked car at a local motel. The officers were dispatched to the parking lot of the Host Inn hotel, a large convention centre motel located around 3 miles from Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Harrisburg Interchange. They approached the red 1978 Plymouth Horizon hatchback and immediately observed that the trunk was partially open. As the officers got closer, they saw a pale arm hanging out of the vehicle. They slowly opened up the trunk to reveal the naked body of a woman…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Huntington Hartford rubbed shoulders with some of the elites during his “playboy” years throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In photographs, he posed alongside Salvador Dalí and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In the wake of his father’s death in 1922, he had become one of the heirs to the estate of his grandfather, George Huntington Hartford, who headed the great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. At just 12 years old, Hartford inherited $90 million, equivalent to around $1.25 billion today. In 1942, he purchased a 160-acre estate in the picturesque Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and named it The Pines. On the morning of July 20th, 1959, Henry Brugger and Salvador Senjas were beginning their caretaking shift at the lavish estate. As they worked outside under the sultry summer sun, a man scrambled up Sullivan Canyon, which fronted The Pines. He looked extremely dishevelled as he muttered something about an accident at the cliff ledge…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Chowchilla was a rural town in Madera County, California. In 1976 the population of the farming community was around 5,000, spread across sprawling acres of land. Most of those living in Chowchilla had been born and raised there, in the Central Valley. The isolated countryside didn’t provide much for kids to do during the summer months, so many enrolled in summer school. Dairyland Elementary had been assigned as the location for classes in the summer of 76 and over 125 children signed up to attend. 26 of those pupils would become victims of one of the most notorious mass kidnappings in US history…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… A single block located between 5th and 6th avenue on 47th Street in New York is known as the Diamond District. The bustling epicentre of New York's diamond and jewellery sales industry sprang up on 47th Street in the 1920s and continues to be one of the most popular locations for jewellery shoppers today. The Diamond District expanded during WWII when thousands fled Nazi-occupied Europe and set up shop in New York City. The Diamond Dealers Club, which was founded in the 1930s as a place for dealers and brokers to store their diamonds, has described the arrival of new traders as follows: “Their influx into America, together with the unprecedented economic boom that took place in the country in the post-war period, shifted the balance of the diamond trade from Western Europe to New York. Indeed, immigration has long been a decisive factor in the growth of the U.S. diamond sector, and the DDC, both then and today, traditionally has served as a melting pot for a diverse group of nationalities and cultures”.Many store owners and workers in the Diamond District were Orthodox or Hasidic Jews. A small place that contained such valuable products was always bound to attract undesirables, but in 1977 the disappearance of two diamond cutters proved that pressure was only good for diamonds…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Mary Lyons was beginning her shift at the Bank of America branch office in Maple Croft Plaza, in Cheshire, Connecticut. It was the 23rd of July, 2007, a Monday, so Mary knew that it was going to be a busy day. By 9:30AM, there was already a line of customers, ready to go about their financial transactions after the weekend. A middle-aged woman approached the counter. Mary noticed immediately that she had a terrified look in her eyes. Her face was ashen. The woman quietly told Mary that her name was Jennifer Petit, and that she and her family were being held hostage at their home by two men. She needed to withdraw $15,000 to bring to the men, one of whom was in her car in the parking lot waiting for her to return. Jennifer told Mary that if police were contacted, her children and husband would be killed...

On this episode of They Walk Among America… Sabre Springs is a planned high-end community in San Diego, California. It’s a typical residential community where many people go to raise their families within close proximity to employment and good schools. Around 9,000 people were living in Sabre Springs in February 2002 when something destroyed the community's perceived serenity. Before then, parents had no issues with letting their children play in the neighborhood, or leaving a window unlocked in the two-storey tract homes. Children went to school and came home to play with friends, cycling their bikes past neighbor's houses, never aware of the danger lurking behind closed doors until it was too late…

On this episode of They Walk Among America… In 1986 Timothy Hennis was found guilty of murdering Kathryn, Kara and Erin Eastburn, and sentenced to death. At the time, no forensic evidence definitively tied Hennis to the crimes. However, several witnesses were confident the man fleeing the scene in a white Chevrolet Chevette, and using Kathryn Eastburn’s stolen bank card, was standing in the dock. The case would make its way to the supreme court, and Hennis won a new trial, citing the inflammatory photographs presented to the jury during the first set of legal proceedings. In a second trial, several years later, Timothy Hennis would be acquitted of all charges.
