Telekinesis, as much as we’d like to think it’s possible, has been proven not to exist. Well, except for those scientific studies that we have not heard about that say the exact opposite. IN THIS EPISODE: The axe murders of New Orleans took place over a hundred years ago, but “The Jazzman Story” remains one of the greatest mysteries and unsolved murder cases within the annals of American crime. (The Axeman’s Jazz) *** The investigation of an apparent suicide in 1953 led to an unbelievable theory… not only had the victim used LSD years earlier, but it was quite possible it was forced upon him by the Central Intelligence Agency. (The CIA and LSD) *** You don’t often hear of people being struck and killed by lightning – at least not nowadays. But pick up a paper from the early 1900s and you’d think people were doing it as a hobby. (Death By Electrical Storm) *** January 30th, 1835 was the date of the first attempt at assassinating a sitting U.S. President – Andrew Jackson. That fact itself doesn’t warrant placement in Weird Darkness, seeing as the attempt failed – but the story leading up to the attempt, and the attempt itself, certainly earn their place in this episode. (The President and the Madman) *** I’ll end the episode in the Chamber of Comments, but before that, my last story will the most disturbing one of the episode. Most ghosts are seemingly passive or even benevolent, appearing to scare people only by accident, never by intent. But then there are the stories of violent and angry ghosts – spirits that not only bring terror, but also bloodshed and even death by their own ghostly hands. We’ll look at some famous cases of violent hauntings throughout history.

THE TRUE CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: In the early morning hours of March 13, 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was murdered in New York City, a crime that would become infamous due to the claim that 38 witnesses did nothing to help her. This event sparked the development of the "bystander effect" theory, which suggests that individuals in a crowd are less likely to assist in an emergency due to a diffusion of responsibility. However, the narrative of Genovese's death is far more complex than initially reported. Kitty, a bar manager and bookie, was attacked by Winston Moseley near her home. Although some neighbors did call for help, and one, Sophia Farrar, even rushed to her aid, the story was sensationalized by the media. The New York Times, in particular, exaggerated the number of witnesses, leading to widespread misconceptions about the event. Despite the inaccuracies, Genovese's tragic death led to significant societal changes, including the establishment of the 911 emergency call system and deeper exploration into human psychology regarding emergency intervention. This is the true story of Kitty Genovese’s death and the unraveling of the myth surrounding the 38 witnesses.

But now we’ve learned it is very possible that would never have happened had this scientist not had a bit of sorcerer in him as well. This one act triggered a wave of anti-Semitism that wiped out a community of Jewish males and threatened the power of a pope. All from the death of one child. (History’s Most Dangerous Toddler) *** "I am innocent, that mark of mine will NEVER be wiped out. It will remain forever to shame the county for hanging an innocent man…. " Alexander Campbell said these words on June 21, 1877 shortly before his hanging. And true to his word, the handprint he left behind refuses to fade away – no matter how hard people try to remove it. (The Reappearing Handprint) *** A century ago, in July 1920, The Illustrated Police News, ran a single story on its front page, complete with a drawing of a man lying on top of a woman, both surrounded in blood. But even more disturbing – a young boy, very much alive, and apparently watching the whole thing. (The Little Boy Who Watched His Parents Die) *** It took a while before the first woman to be hanged would take place in the USA – but in 1778 it finally happened. And her name was Bathsheba Spooner. HOUR ONE: About 80 years after the black plague began, a different plague came upon England – a fatal one that would cause you to almost instantly perspire to death. If you’ve not heard that before, it could be because the U.S. government tried to cover it up. IN THIS EPISODE: Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested and pleaded guilty; he received multiple life sentences, bringing the Golden State Killer trial to an end several decades after the murderer's bloody reign began. But the most shocking part of his story for most, even more so than the brutal and monstrous crimes, was the fact that he was a trusted member of law enforcement – a man the public was expected to trust and depend on. We’ll look at the crimes he committed… and the trial that finally put him away for good. Plus… imagine being married to someone for forty years, only to find out that person is the Golden State Killer. We’ll look at the life of Sharon Huddle, who understandably wants nothing to do with the press. Was she fooled by her husband for all those years, or did she know all along that her husband was truly a serial killer?

So it should be no surprise that homes where the disease took up residence were devastated, and whether or not they are haunted by the paranormal, they are certainly haunted by the dark memories and energies of those who were consumed there. Including one particular home a doctor in 1915 will describe for us. And one family knows that’s true, because they were stuck in one of the time slips. (Timeslip Village) *** When fans of the paranormal hear the name ‘Rendlesham’, the first thing that springs to mind is an incident that happened over three nights around Christmas 1980, when it was said that several spaceships visited the nearby airbase. What they don’t think of is Ariel the mermaid, or Daryl Hannah from the movie “Splash”. But maybe they should. Originally published in Galaxy Science Fiction magazine, July 1951, the story “Pen Pal” by Stephen Marlowe introduces us to Matilda, a young woman looking for love by submitting letters to a literary magazine. That’s something much more common when the story was published in 1951 and probably pretty close to using a dating app these days. When she thinks she’s found the love of her life, things get really strange.

IN THIS EPISODE: “The Last Voyage of Demeter” is an extract from the most terrifying vampire fiction in literary history, Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” from 1897. The thrilling novel is a gothic horror classic written in epistolary form through a series of journal entries, newspaper articles, and correspondence. This is the book’s suspenseful Chapter 7, delving into the final sea voyage of Demeter, the Russian ship unknowingly carrying Transylvania’s undead Count Dracula. When a ghost ship arrives in Whitby harbor, the locals search for clues about how the doomed vessel’s crew vanished. Soon, the captain’s log is discovered, but the translated correspondence does nothing more than strike terror in the hearts of all who read it. Weeks before its final destination, strange and supernatural events began haunting the ship. The captain started keeping a log to record the death, darkness, and fear that had taken hold of his crew. Of course, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was also recently made into a film – but we’re working from the original writings of Bram Stoker here, not a movie script.

IN THIS EPISODE: If you ever missed death by an inch, and you believe you had a little help, you may be one of many people with guardian angel stories. Even for nonbelievers, a brush with real guardian angels is an encounter with the uncanny, proof of entities in the world beyond your line of sight. That's why real guardian angel stories, such as the ones I will share in this episode, are so creepy; even if it ends as a positive experience, it leaves you with a lot of lingering questions. Most people believe real guardian angels protect people from harm, but that doesn't make them less unnerving. After all, if angels truly are real, then so are the demonic forces they seek to protect people from.

IN THIS EPISODE: It’s a stretch of road that only opened in 1988 to connect two existing roads, but it is known for being one of the deadliest roads in all of Britain… and one of the most haunted places in the world. Those who did escape reported hearing a loud ringing alarm, so loud they had to cover their ears and run, and even then suffered severe or complete hearing loss. They may not have known it at the time, but they had just come into contact with SCP-6789, also known as Siren Head. (Siren Head) *** The coldest of cold cases for law enforcement in Idaho is the disappearance of Lillian Richey – and it’s also the most baffling, as Lillian disappeared from within her own home. But then, if you are the first person to investigate the Borley Rectory, the most haunted building in England, you deserve to have your name remembered. IN THIS EPISODE: We spend plenty of time watching the stars and listening to radio signals. We hope we can finally find the evidence we are not alone in the Universe. We eagerly await our first official contact with extraterrestrials, but nothing ever happens. Sometimes we learn an odd signal has been picked up in space and we get our hopes up again, only to be told later it was nothing more than a neutron star with a very large magnetic field, throwing off the bursts, or something similar. So, where are the aliens we want to hear from and possibly meet? If we assume that we are not the only intelligent species in the universe, then they must be out there. There are many theories, but one stands out as particularly disturbing.
