But he knew he couldn’t do it professionally anymore after graduating college. ● He naturally gravitated toward racing because of his love for cars and the sport. ● He started joining amateur races, competing on open track days using his personal cars. Eventually, his goal turned to become a professional racecar driver. ● Jesse immediately started researching. He found that there was a racial stereotype against being black when it comes to racing. You also needed to have connections. ● However, he already had a clear vision in mind. No racial stereotype or barrier was going to stop him. [5:35] Working His Way to the Top● Jesse started at the lowest level possible in NASCAR in 2015, racing with late-model stock cars. ● Every year, he continues to work his way up. ● Now, Jesse is racing at the national level. He’s only about a step or two below Bubba Wallace, who is on the highest level. ● Tune in to the full episode to hear about Jesse’s next big goal! [7:18] Being Part of the Minority in NASCAR● He tries not to look at it, but the racial stereotype is apparent in their industry. ● The number of African-Americans on the pit crew side is increasing, but not on the driver side. ● Many African-American drivers are working toward the national series and NASCAR. However, it takes a lot of resources, energy, effort, and networking outside of skill. ● Unlike other sports, there is a branding and networking side in making it to NASCAR; being a good driver doesn’t guarantee success. [9:22] Feeling Pressure● Jesse doesn’t feel pressure about being one of the two African-Americans in NASCAR. ● Since he started late, he knows he has more to learn and experience. ● Right now, he races part-time between seasons. Once he gets all the resources in place, that’s when he can run full seasons and start getting better. ● Everything is part of the process. It takes time, so you have to stay patient, keep grinding, keep your head down, and keep moving. [11:57] Dealing with Racial Stereotypes in NASCAR● It always comes as a surprise to people when Jesse tells them he's racing in NASCAR. ● They...

Fri, 26 Feb 2021 - 97 - ep.31 Inspiring Women Through Prison Ministries With Shug Bury
There are over 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States alone. When these people finish serving their sentence, over 75% will re-offend within five years. Are some people just inherently bad and dangerous? No, our guest reminds us that we are all children of God who deserve a second chance. When we give opportunities to the incarcerated, we can turn reoffend rates from 75% to as low as 8%. But we must first provide them with the proper mentoring. Prison ministries offer just the right programs and training sessions to help end this cycle of crime. In this episode, Shug Bury shares her advocacy to help women live victoriously through HIM4Her Ministries. She shares that incarcerated people often get judged and turned away from opportunities like housing and employment, leading them to a vicious cycle of hardship and criminality. We can stop this from happening by becoming more compassionate and following God’s example. Tune in to the episode to learn what it’s like to help and minister to the incarcerated! 3 reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn why the incarcerated often re-offend and end up back in prison. For decades, the video game industry has provided hours of enjoyment for millions of people worldwide. With many competitors wanting a share of the pie, video game companies must constantly innovate to keep competitive. Part of this comes in the form of marketing and selling video games to children. The consequences of these to our young are far-reaching. In this episode, Lt. Col. He talks about why it’s problematic to have our children be exposed to these. We also learn how violent video games are connected to sleep deprivation, mass murder, suicide, and more. But not all is lost. Even if we cannot change the industry immediately, we can take control of our family’s habits. Lt. Col. Dave shares simple changes we can make to create a big impact, not just in our children’s lives but also in our own. I first saw Samuel when one of his posts “the power of consistency” went viral on LinkedIn with close to a million views. It resonated with me as it's simple but true, we do not achieve anything without consistency! He’s an incredibly powerful and exciting speaker driven by purpose but has had to overcome adversity in his own life. At 23 he was kicked off his Ph.D., program for not being good enough! but of course, the story does not end there.
