The trial for the violent murder of Marilyn Sheppard was considered to be the OJ Simpson case of its day, both in its public spectacle and in its unconventional journey through the law system. On July 4th, 1954, Merylin Sheppard was found brutally murdered in her Bay Village home in Ohio. The mother, who was four months pregnant at the time was bludgeoned to death. Hit 27 times by an unknown object. Her husband Sam Sheppard survived the incident, claiming to have fought with a bushy-haired intruder and being rendered unconscious twice in his efforts. He would both be found guilty and innocent of her murder in separate trials over the years, and in this episode, we will see how the media, court system, and odd circumstances put an innocent man behind bars.

In August of 1578, 115 settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. It was the second attempt by settlers to create an outpost there, and they were once again met with difficulties. It was decided that Governor John White would sail back to England for provisions, leaving a wife, daughter, and granddaughter. In August of 1580, John White returned to his family and community, but when he arrived all of the settlers had mysteriously disappeared. One of the only clues for him to work off of was the letters “Cro” carved into a tree. No one from the community was ever seen again.

The Hindenburg disaster was an airship accident that occurred on May 6, 1937, in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. It was a disaster that was essentially the end of commercial airships, and something you are probably familiar with whether you know it or not. You may have seen the infamous footage of the explosion or remember the famous “Oh the humanity” quote. It is an event that has entered the zeitgeist and is still referenced all these years later. Despite the obvious fallbacks of using large amounts of hydrogen to keep these crafts afloat, we will come to see in this episode that the events and cause of the Hindenburg crash were more complex and shrouded in more mystery than one might think.
