Mon, 14 Sep 2020 - 17 - The Bet (John Lake)
From John Lake's new album, Seven Angels. https://johnlakejazz.bandcamp.com/album/seven-angels-2 John Lake - trumpet and composer Michael Thomas - Alto Saxophone Paul Jones - Tenor Saxophone Steven Feifke - Piano Marcos Varela - Bass Jeff Davis - Drums "The record date was about three weeks out, and I knew I needed something fresh, something with a lot of energy. I had the day off from gigs, and I was aching to go outside and take a walk, maybe meet a friend. But I promised myself I would write this new tune today. That sparked a memory of the classic short story of Anton Chekhov, “The Bet,” where two professionals make a wager that one of them can’t stay isolated in a room for a period of so many years. I don’t want to spoil the ending for anyone, but that was the feeling I had. Once I had that inspiration, the song just poured out of me as I was sitting at the Rhodes piano, and then at my computer. It’s one of my favorite songs to play from the record, and it was the first single that we put out."

Sweet Moments was recorded remotely from our separate apartments with cell phones, handheld recorders, and many email exchanges. Each song is unique in character, but all are reflections on moments in time, and the way these moments are colored by our emotions. There is one song about the future, one about the present, and one about the past. We hope you enjoy. We are donating half of everything we make on this album to NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Mon, 27 Jul 2020 - 11 - Ellstandissa (Rajiv Jayaweera)
www.rajivjayaweera.com www.facebook.com/rajivjayaweera Instagram: @euroraj Pistils is the debut recording from Sri Lankan/Australian jazz drummer and composer, Rajiv Jayaweera. The album showcases eight compelling, thoughtful originals, which draw inspiration from Sri Lanka. Jayaweera’s compositions feature strong melodies and beauty, coupled with intricate bass lines and rhythmic interplay. His band of Chris Cheek (soprano & tenor saxophones), Aaron Parks (piano), Hugh Stuckey (guitar) and Sam Anning (double bass), truly display why they are amongst the most revered and sought-after musicians on the scene today. Ellstandissa, featuring the relatively unknown Thammattama drum (also known as a temple drum), a two-headed traditional drum played with a pair of fascinating curly wooden sticks and most commonly used in cultural ceremonies, incorporates rhythms from a Sri Lankan dance entitled Gajaga Wannama, or dance of the elephant, in 7/8 time. The main melody of the song is circular and haunting, and is played over a counter melody that superimposes a polyrhythmic figure. Ellstandissa is a made up word combining the names of the composer’s grandparents.
Mon, 03 Aug 2020 - 10 - Same Song (Kari van der Kloot)
Kari van der Kloot: voice/composition Lisanne Tremblay: violin Jamie Reynolds: piano/mini Moog Gary Wang: bass Nathan Ellman-Bell: drums Kari van der Kloot’s album “The Architects” lives somewhere in the space between jazz and folk. Composed by Kari van der Kloot (including a setting of an e.e. cummings poem), the music glides seamlessly between intricately arranged ensemble playing and lush layers of vocals and violins, to moments of improvised abandon. Kari has an innate skill for crafting approachable melodies that belie the depth and complexities of her compositions. This album features a stellar cast of New York based musicians: violinist Lisanne Tremblay, pianist/synth player Jamie Reynolds, bassist Gary Wang and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell. A working band since early 2018, the five musicians of “The Architects” establish an atmosphere of trust throughout the album—each musician’s individual voice shines through clearly in each song while weaving a multi-layered collage together. http://www.karivanderkloot.com https://karivanderkloot.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/album/6v0NnnTVGAOeRQoQnOu3jV?si=0N_fXpg4SSifU2aFKvhfwg http://www.facebook.com/karivanderklootjazzvocalist http://www.instagram.com/karivanderkloot
Mon, 20 Jul 2020 - 9 - Night Funeral in Harlem (Addison Frei)
Addison Frei: “Night Funeral in Harlem” ISRC: QZ-GA9-20-00001 Written, performed and produced by Addison Frei Tahira Clayton, vocals Matt Young, drums Mastered by Matt Young at Totem Audio www.addisonfrei.com www.addisonfrei.bandcamp.com www.instagram.com/addisonfrei www.facebook.com/addisonfreimusic Ever since Addison Frei (“Fry”) began playing piano in local restaurants around Lawrence, Kansas at the age of ten, he has captivated audiences and garnered acclaim far beyond his years. Frei’s latest album No Defense (TCB Records) was celebrated with solo performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Alhambra (Geneva), and Lucerne Piano Festival. His lyrical pianism has made him a favorite accompanist for many vocalists including Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, Janis Siegel and Carol Fredette. Frei’s artistry as a composer and producer is showcased with genre-bending singles “Cornerstone”, “Postcard” and his EP Future Speak featuring Michael Mayo and Tahira Clayton. Frei also produced Clayton’s 2019 release Wait Till Now. Frei’s eclectic musicianship remains on display in the New York scene—he’s equally at home leading jazz groups at Dizzy’s Club and the Kitano or playing synthesizers with his band at National Sawdust and Rockwood Music Hall. A proud Yamaha Artist, Frei’s previous records include Transit (2016) and Intentions (2014). He also co-leads AMP Trio, contributing compositions to each of their five studio albums. Mon, 29 Jun 2020 - 8 - Aurora (Michael Sarian's New Aurora)
Michael Sarian - Flugelhorn Santiago Leibson - Piano Marty Kenney - Bass Dayeon Seok - Drums Album release is 9/4 on ears&eyes Records (www.earandeyesrecords.com / ig: @earsandeyesrecords) Produced by Michael Sarian and Luis Bacque Recorded, mixed & mastered by Luis Bacque at Bacque Recording Engineering Studios in Roselle, New Jersey (Luis Bacque uses Sonoris Software) Album artwork & design: Jamie Breiwick @ B Side Graphics (www.bsidegraphics.net / ig: @b.side.graphics) Michael Sarian's new quartet, New Aurora, gets its name from the track Aurora, which Sarian began writing on February 15, 2019. Although the word literally means dawn, which is the meaning Sarian hopes to convey behind the project, the composition came after hearing of a mass shooting that day in Aurora, Illinois. The alternation between sus2 and sus4 chords throughout the first section, paired with a simple melody, bear a somber mood, a hopelessness which Sarian felt assuming #Aurora was trending because of the 2012 mass shooting there, only to find out there another had taken place.
Mon, 13 Jul 2020 - 7 - Etude 2 & Chorale (Leonor Falcon)
Leonor Falcon, violin and composition http://www.leonorfalcon.com/ Juanma Trujillo, guitar https://juanmatrujillo.com/ Etude 2: I wrote this short piece for my friends of the Golden-Williams duo, who are both classical musicians (viola and cello) and commissioned me to write them a piece with some instructions on how to improvise. It was an exercise in creativity for them and for me as well, since I had to come up with different ideas they could try throughout the piece. They also came up with their own which resulted into something very different than what I had imagined. It's a very open-ended piece, with a different result every time I play it with different musicians. Chorale: This is a piece I wrote several years ago for my first album Imaga Mondo, and is a short homage to Bach, my favorite composer of all time.
