Mr. Mensch’s solely– owned patents are implemented in The Western Design Center’s proprietary CMOS 65xx Microprocessor family of chips and related systems. This technology is used today in an ever growing variety of products including medical life support, automotive, industrial, consumer and personal computers. The foundation for this widespread use of the technology began when two of WDC’s 65xx Microprocessor family members were used in the introduction of groundbreaking PC and video game products. The W65C02S 8–bit microprocessor was first used in the Apple IIc personal computer and the Apple IIe personal computer. The W65C816S 16–bit microprocessor was first used in the Apple IIgs personal computer and Super Nintendo video game system.
In the fall of 1996, Mr. Mensch was honored for his outstanding contribution to the information technology industry at a ceremony during which the 6502 was recognized at COMDEX as the first of seven “defining” products in the twenty–five year history of the microprocessor. He has become recognized as the person most responsible for the continued success and proliferation of use of the 65xx technology which has been enhanced and expanded with the development of the WDC 65xx Microprocessor family products.
Mr. Mensch was born in 1945 and grew up on a dairy farm in Bucks County, PA. He attended Pennridge High School in Perkasie, PA, and graduated in 1963. He graduated from Temple University (AEET 1966) in Philadelphia, PA, attendedVillanova (Spring/Summer 1968 & Spring 1969), graduated from the University of Arizona with High Distinction (BSEE 1971) in Tucson, AZ, and then attended Arizona State University graduate courses (1971–79).
Mr. Mensch was employed at Philco Ford in Blue Bell, PA (1967–69), Motorola in Mesa, AZ (1971–74), MOS Technology in Norristown, PA (1974–77), and Integrated Circuit Engineering (ICE) in Scottsdale, AZ (1977–78), before founding The Western Design Center, Inc. in Mesa, AZ (1978–present).
From 1985 to 1988, Mr. Mensch was a member of the Board of Directors for Mesa Bank, a local community bank. Mr. Mensch was also a member of the Board of Directors for TouchScape (1999–2001) and DotSafe (2000–2001), two Internet companies.
In 1997, he was the keynote speaker at the world’s first IP (Intellectual Property) conference, IP Europe. He participated on a special panel discussion session concerning “Starting Up Companies to Commercialize University– Generated Technologies” at the ICEE– 2000 conference in Taiwan in August, 2000, which was attended by approximately 500 professors from all over the world.
While attending the University of Arizona, he was awarded a scholarship by the Tucson Gas and Electric Company. In 1985, he received the Certificate of Honor from Temple University’s College of Engineering and Architecture and has been recognized at both Temple University and the University of Arizona as an outstanding alumnus. In 1994, Mr. Mensch was named to the College of Engineering Advisory Council at the University of Notre Dame. In 1995, he was appointed to the Industrial Advisory Board for the Electronic Computer Technology Department in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at Arizona State University . In 1996, he joined the Industrial Advisory Board for the newly created Center for Low Power Electronics (CLPE), of which WDC is a charter member. In 1999, in conjunction with the CLPE, the National Science Foundation (NSF) provided an SBIR grant to WDC and the University of Arizona for development of a low power mixed signal rapid prototype system designed around the 65xx technology. From 1994– to 2000, Mr. Mensch assisted in teaching a class in System–On–a–Chip (SOC) IC Design at Arizona State University. He was chosen to receive the Distinguished Alumni Leadership Award from Temple University in April 1998. In August of 1998, he received the Sigma Pi International Fraternity’s Founders’ Award its highest individual award. In May 2002, Mr. Mensch was inducted into the Pennridge High School “Wall of Fame” as an outstanding graduate. The Computer Museum of America inducted Mr. Mensch into its Hall of Fame in June of 2002. In 2004 Mr. Mensch was invited to be a charter member of two advisory boards for Temple University (1) the inaugural Board of Visitors for the College of Engineering and (2) the Inaugural President’s Advisory Board. On December 8, 2005, Mr. Mensch was recognized by the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering as the 2005 recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award at a luncheon to honor technology and business executives who have made a lasting contribution to Arizona’s economy. In January, 2004, the book Leaders of the Information Age identified Mr. Mensch as one of 250 individuals dating back to the 15th century who set the foundation of today’s Information Technology industry. He was featured in the “Success” section of the January 1, 2006 issue of the Mesa tribune . In February, 1999, Jonah McLeod, the Editor–in–Chief of Silicon Strategies , wrote an editorial entitled “What’s the Proper Goal for an IP Business Model?” that highlighted Mr. Mensch’s pioneering efforts concerning microprocessor IP. The June, 1998, Forbes ASAP magazine cover story article “The Chips We Live By” featured his contribution to the microprocessor industry. An article in Silicon Strategies , also in June, l998, chronicled Mr. Mensch’s pioneering approach to IP integration. Other articles include Temple University’sTemple Review (Winter 1992) as well as Temple’s Conwell Society Newsletter (Winter 1994), University of Arizona’s Arizona Engineer newsletter (Fall 1995), Commodore World magazine (January 1996), and Arizona Business Gazette newspaper (July 1996). He was also featured in a book titled Which Business?: Help in Selecting your New Venture, published in early 1997 and was mentioned in Microcosm: The Quantum Revolution in Economics and Technology, a book written by George Gilder in 1989.
Papers written and/or presented by Mr. Mensch include (1) “System–on–Chip Design Methodology in Engineering Education” presented at ICEE 2000 in Taipei, Taiwan, August, 2000; (2) “Analog Digital Development Board for Prototyping Mixed Signal Circuits” presented at MIXDES 2000 (Mixed Signal Design Conference) in Lodz, Poland, June, 2000; (3) “Behavioral Level Analog Synthesis Targeted to Field Programmable Analog Arrays” presented at MIXDES 2000 in Lodz, Poland, June, 2000. In 1998, Mr. Mensch wrote an article entitled “A Business Model for IP Providers” which was published in the newsletter for the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA).
Mr. Mensch has established educational scholarships at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, AZ, Pennridge High School in Perkasie, PA, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. His most memorable “non– technical” achievement was completion of the inaugural running of the Washington D.C. Marathon in March of 2002 at the age of 58.
Mr. Mensch has five children. He currently resides with his wife, Dianne, in Superstition Mountain, Arizona.

Nikol has worked Astronauts, NASA, ESA among other organizations merging psychology and space exploration. She has conducted extensive research on the Overview Effect among astronauts using a qualitative approach and explored their experiences of this phenomenon. She continued this research for her Master’s thesis, looking into whether or not virtual reality (VR) can be used to replicate the Overview Effect and if it can simulate similar therapeutic benefits as those experienced by astronauts.

Indian Genes speaks to Michael about the brain basis of consciousness. Brains arrive at the conclusion that they have an internal, subjective experience of things — an experience that is non-physical and inexplicable. How can such a thing be studied scientifically? When an information-processing device such as the brain introspects, or accesses internal data, and on that basis arrives at the conclusion that it has a magic property inside of it, the first question for a scientist is probably not: how did that device produce magic? Or even: what is the magic? Such questions are probably not coherent. Instead, in my lab we are asking: how does a brain arrive at that kind of self-description? What is the adaptive advantage of that style of self-description? What systems in the brain compute that information? What happens when those systems are damaged? When and how did they evolve? All of these questions are scientifically approachable. My lab is currently testing a specific, mechanistic theory of awareness described in my recent book, Consciousness and the Social Brain.

Ranga Ram Chary is an observational cosmologist working in the fields of reionization, galaxy evolution, cluster cosmology and cosmic backgrounds. His group is active in science with Planck, Euclid, Herschel and the Spitzer Space Telescope in addition to a range of ground-based astronomical observation facilities such as Palomar, Keck, CSO, CARMA and ALMA. We are also involved in developing the next generation of small explorer missions in collaboration with JPL. Specifically, measuring the properties of star-forming galaxies out to the highest redshifts, and in conjunction with studies of gamma-ray burst number densities and Type Ia supernovae, attempting to understand fundamental properties of galaxies, such as how they grow their stellar mass and metallicity, what is the stellar mass function therein, when does dust begin to play a significant role in their energetics and what fuels the star-formation as a function of cosmic time. Using these measurements to provide, among other things, better constraints on the reionization history of the Universe between redshifts of 6 and 20 (the first billion years of time), which is arguably the most important astrophysical event since the Big Bang. THe team is also using objects at the extreme end of the dark matter mass function, i.e. galaxy clusters, as a probe of the structure of the Universe. By measuring cluster masses over the last half of cosmic time (z<1) using galaxy dynamics and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, we can constrain the equation of state of dark energy and non-Gaussianity in the primordial density fluctuation field, two quantities which are parametric representations of the evolution of our Universe. Most recent efforts have measured spectral anomalies at the 10 parts per million in the cosmic microwave background to observationally constrain the existence of alternate universes with physical properties different than our own. Of late, the team has developed a mission concept to identify the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events that are being detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo. Between 2010 and close-out in 2018,he served as the Project Scientist and Project Manager of the U.S. Planck Data Center at Caltech and since 2013, he has been the P.I. of one of the 3 U.S. Science Teams on Euclid.

Marcella's interest in astronomy and atmospheric optical phenomena (photometeors) over time led her to create a scientific dissemination site (www.greenflash.photo) with about 1000 photometeor images and videos, even rare ones, observed throughout Italy and above all on the Iblei mountains (Rg) and on the Dolomites in Cadore, landscapes chosen for the great diversity of orographic, climatic and day and night luminosity, as well as for their position at the two extreme latitudes of Italy. In 2011 he received from the Minister of Public Administration the national prize for innovation in teaching in schools "Innovascuola". In 2015, his photo "Moon and Antelao" is included in the Shortlist of the Royal Museum of Greenwich photo competition "Astronomy Photographer of the Year", which selects the best astrophotography of the year from all over the world. The photo was then also published in the volume "Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2015" published by the Royal Observatory of Greenwich in collaboration with the BBC, the photographic site Flickr and the Collins publishing house and exhibited inside the Astronomical Observatory of Greenwich.
The same photo will become the December image of the 2017 Greenwich Astronomical Observatory calendar. In 2016 he exhibited his photos in a personal exhibition in San Vito di Cadore (Bl), with more than 100 photos of atmospheric optical phenomena from all over Italy. The event was the first exhibition in Italy complete with video dedicated to photometeors. The work of dissemination through video and photography continues in the following years and many of his images are published by the major national astronomy magazines (Colelum Astronomia, Nuovo Orione and Le Stelle, Focus) and internationally (Astronomy Now, Sky and Telescope) as well as by websites of primary scientific importance such as those of Spaceweather, USRA and NASA. In 2016, he documents the visibility of the Maltese archipelago from the province of Ragusa and his images and his videos are broadcast by the Maltese national TV which, in the interview, define his works as the first shots of the Maltese archipelago by the iblei. Since 2017 he has been a member of the board of directors of CISA (Centro Ibleo Studi Astronomici), UAI delegation (Unione Astrofili Italiani) for the province of Ragusa, which aims to actively promote astronomy in the province of Ragusa, contributing with conferences on atmospheric optics. In September 2018, NASA publishes an image of him that captures the Moon setting next to the active crater south-east of Etna. In 2019 the national magazine "Nuovo Orione" publishes the calendar with its images: 12 photos that tell the sky of the Dolomites and the Iblei. Simon Conway Morris is an English paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and astrobiologist known for his study of the fossils of the Burgess Shale and the Cambrian explosion. The results of these discoveries were celebrated in Stephen Jay Gould's 1989 book Wonderful Life. Conway Morris's own book on the subject, The Crucible of Creation (1998), however, is critical of Gould's presentation and interpretation. He has held the Chair of Evolutionary Paleobiology in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge since 1995.Simon Conway Morris speaks exclusively to Indian Genes! In his new book From Extraterrestrials to Humans, he cheerfully challenges six assumptions—what he calls ‘myths’—that too often pass as unquestioned truths amongst the evolutionary orthodox.
His convivial tour begins with the idea that evolution is boundless in the kinds of biological systems it can produce. Not true, he says. The process is highly circumscribed and delimited. Nor is it random. This popular notion holds that evolution proceeds blindly, with no endgame. But Conway Morris suggests otherwise, pointing to evidence that the processes of evolution are “seeded with inevitabilities.”
If that is so, then what about mass extinctions? Don’t they steer the development of life in radically new directions? Rather the reverse, claims Conway Morris. Such cataclysms simply accelerate evolutionary developments that were going to happen anyway. And what about that other evolutionary canard: the “missing link”? Plenty to choose from in the fossil record but what is persistently over-looked is that in any group there is not one but a phalanx of “missing links”. Once again we under-score the near-inevitability of evolutionary outcomes.
Turning from fossils to minds, Conway Morris critically examines the popular tenet that the intelligences of humans and animals basically are the same thing, a difference of degree not kind. A closer scrutiny of our minds shows that in reality an unbridgeable gulf separates us from even the chimpanzees, so begging questions of consciousness and Mind.
Finally, Conway Morris tackles the question of extraterrestrials. Surely, the size and scale of the universe suggest that alien life must exist somewhere beyond Earth and our tiny siloed solar system? After all, evolutionary convergence more than hints that human-like forms are universal. But Dr. Conway Morris has serious doubts. The famous Fermi Paradox (“Where are they?”) appears to hold: Alone in the cosmos—and unique, but not quite in the way one might expect.

Dr. Lee Clare is responsible for the coordination of the Göbekli Tepe Project. He completed his master’s degree at the University of Cologne in 2005, majoring in prehistoric archaeology. Following the completion of his PhD in 2013, which focused Early Holocene climate-culture interactions in the Eastern Mediterranean, he joined the Orient Department of the DAI as a post-doctoral fellow. In 2015 he took on the position of research coordinator of the DFG long-term project at Göbekli Tepe, and in 2019 moved to the DAI’s Istanbul Department where he is now acting consultant for prehistoric archaeology. His areas of academic interest include Neolithisation and Neolithic dispersal processes, Early-Middle Holocene absolute chronologies, culture-climate interaction, prehistoric conflict and cognitive evolution.
The mound of Göbekli Tepe is situated a few kilometres to the northeast of the modern town of Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey. The tell is situated on the highest point of the Germus mountain range towering 750 m above the Harran plain. With a height of 15 m, the mound, which is completely artificial, is spreading on an area of about 9 ha, measuring 300 m in diameter. This immense ruin hill was formed of the debris of monumental constructions dating back to the 10th and 9th millenium BC. Göbekli Tepe was first noted as an archaeological site during a combined survey by the Universities of Chicago and Istanbul in the 1960s (Benedict 1980 – external link) due to its remarkable amount of flint flakes, chips, and tools, but the architecture the mound was hiding remained unrecognized until its re-discovery in 1994 by Klaus Schmidt. Excavations started the following year and are still ongoing, until his untimely death in 2014 lead by Klaus Schmidt. They revealed an monumental architecture not suspected in such an early context and illustrating the outstanding role of this site – not as a settlement, but as a place of cult and ritual.

Jonathan is an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. He is a staff member at the Chandra X-ray Center. McDowell is the author and editor of Jonathan's Space Report, an e-mail-distributed newsletter documenting satellite launches.
McDowell has a BA in Mathematics (1981) from Churchill College and a PhD in Astrophysics (1986) from the Institute of Astronomy, both at the University of Cambridge, England. After high school, McDowell worked for six months at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and held a summer job at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh before he began his PhD studies. His first post-doctoral position was at Jodrell Bank followed by another at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. McDowell then moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where he spent a year at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. In 1992, McDowell returned to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and currently works there as a staff member at the Chandra X-ray Center.

Prior to this, he has experience in building sample collection instruments for Mars and Venus surface missions while working at NASA Ames, USA. S2/EP3 - Jill Cornell Tarteris an American astronomer best known for her work on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).
Tarter's astronomical work is illustrated in Carl Sagan's novel Contact. In the film version of Contact, the protagonist Ellie Arroway is played by Jodie Foster. Tarter conversed with the actress for months before and during filming, and Arroway was "largely based" on Tarter's work. She has also been featured in John Boswell's Symphony of Science music video, "The Poetry of Reality (An Anthem for Science)
Tarter is the former director of the Center for SETI Research, holding the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI at the SETI Institute. In 2002, Discover magazine recognized her as one of the 50 most important women in science.
Tarter has worked on a number of major scientific projects, most relating to the search for extraterrestrial life. As a graduate student, she was inspired to do SETI research by the Cyclops Report. Stuart Bowyer gave her the report to read when Bowyer discovered that Tarter could program the then-outdated PDP-8/S computer that had been donated by Jack Welch for Bowyer's SETI project at Hat Creek Radio Observatory. She worked with Bowyer on the radio-search project SERENDIP and created the corresponding backronym, "Search for Extraterrestrial Radio Emissions from Nearby Developed Intelligent Populations". She was project scientist for NASA's High Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) in 1992 and 1993 and subsequently director of Project Phoenix (HRMS reconfigured) under the auspices of the SETI Institute. She was co-creator with Margaret Turnbull of the HabCat in 2002, a principal component of Project Phoenix. Tarter has published dozens of technical papers and lectures extensively both on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and the need for proper science education. She had spent 35 years in the quest for extraterrestrial life when she announced her retirement in 2012

Loeb has written 8 books, including most recently, Extraterrestrial (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2021), and about 800 papers (with an h-index of 113) on a wide range of topics, including black holes, the first stars, the search for extraterrestrial life and the future of the Universe. He had been the longest serving Chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy (2011-2020), Founding Director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative (2016-present) and Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (2007-present) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics . He serves as Chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies (2018-present) and is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Astronautics. Loeb is a former member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) at the White House and a member of the Advisory Board for "Einstein: Visualize the Impossible" of the Hebrew University. He also chairs the Advisory Committee for the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative (2016-present) and serves as the Science Theory Director for all Initiatives of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. In 2012, TIME magazine selected Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space and in 2020 Loeb was selected among the 14 most inspiring Israelis of the last decade.

Vandana Verma is the Chief Engineer for Robotic Operations for Mars 2020 Perseverance, and the Assistant Section Manager for Mobility and Robotics Systems at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She specializes in space robotics, autonomous robots and robotic operations. She has worked on a number of Space Robotics and Artificial Intelligence research and technology development tasks and has designed, developed, and operated rovers on Mars, the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Atacama Desert. She has been working at NASA since graduating with a Ph.D. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. She works on new space robotics capabilities from early design, through development, testing and launch, to landing and surface operations. As Assistant Section Manager for Mobility and Robotics she helps lead about 150 JPL roboticists developing new technology for future missions and working on a variety of JPL robotic missions. The Mars Ingenuity Helicopter technology is an example of the kind of innovation developed by JPL Robotics.Since 2008 she has been driving rovers on Mars (Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and soon Perseverance) and operating the robotic arm and sampling system as a Rover Planner. She enjoys coding and has written flight software that runs onboard Curiosity and Perseverance, and simulation software used in operations. She works on autonomous robotic arm positioning and autonomous science targeting for Perseverance. The project resulted in a poster presentation at the Royal institution in London and a peer review paper in the International Journal of Thermophysics, Taught 6 courses ranging from 1st year introduction to physics to final year graduate courses in advanced quantum mechanics and electromagnetism for the University of Toronto.He also works with the University of Oxford, to understand the early universe and exploring novel mathematical/statistical techniques.Darsh has also been a Team leader in a group of 6 advising the Oxford Climate Action Network on how to establish collaboration between civic organisations in Oxford and the University of Oxford.

Mitul joined King’s College London as a post-doctoral researcher in Neuroimaging in 2003 with the aim of setting up a research group focussed on pharmacological neuroimaging using MRI methodology. He worked with positron emission tomography at Imperial College for a number of years as an MRC Training Fellow before moving to King’s. A Wellcome Trust Value in People Award enabled the transition. His work was recognised by the British Association for Psychopharmacology Young Investigator Award. At King’s my group brought quantitative methods to identify drug mechanisms and classify different compounds and used classic tracking methods (phMRI) to develop assays of drug modulation. These methods are utilised to understand existing compounds as well as assay novel compounds and we have tested various mechanisms, including in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.Currently, Mitul is Head of the Neuropharmacology Group and Section in the Department of Neuroimaging, Deputy Lead for the Neuroimaging Theme of the NIHR-Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health and Director of the IoPPN Centre for Innovative Therapeutics. Susmita Mohanty is an Indian spaceship designer, serial space entrepreneur and a climate action advocate. She is well known for her research on space related topics. She co-founded India's first private space start-up, Earth2Orbit in 2009.She is the only space entrepreneur in the world to have started companies on three different continents in Asia, Europe and North America.Susmita is one of the few people to have visited both the Arctic and Antarctica .
She completed her bachelor's degree in Electrical engineering from Gujarat University and master's degree in Industrial Design from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. She also completed Masters in Space studies from the International Space University in Strasbourg.
She co-founded Moonfront, an aerospace consulting firm based in San Francisco in 2001, which marked her entry into space entrepreneurship. She also co-founded Liquifer System Group (LSG), an aerospace architecture and design firm in Vienna, Austria in 2004. She also served as one of the prominent members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Aerospace Architecture for over a period of ten years while she was residing in California. In 2005, she was conferred with the International Achievement Award for promoting international cooperation. She was included in the elite list of 25 Indians to Watch by the Financial Times magazine in 2012 and also featured on the front cover page of Fortune magazine in 2017.
She was nominated to the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council for Space Technologies for a period of three consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. She was included in the BBC's list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2019.Reply

Sara Seager is the Class of 1941 Professor of Planetary Science, Professor of Physics, and Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her past research is credited with laying the foundation for the field of exoplanet atmospheres, while her current research focuses on exoplanet atmospheres and the future search for signs of life by way of atmospheric biosignature gases. Professor Seager is involved with a number of space-based exoplanet searches including as the Deputy Science Director for the MIT-led NASA mission TESS, as the PI for the on-orbit JPL/MIT CubeSat ASTERIA, and as a lead for Starshade Rendezvous Mission (a space-based mission concept under technology development for direct imaging discovery and characterization of Earth analogs). Before joining MIT in 2007, Professor Seager spent four years on the senior research staff at the Carnegie Institution of Washington preceded by three years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. Her PhD is from Harvard University, and her BSc from the University of Toronto. Among other accolades, Professor Seager is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a 2013 MacArthur Fellow.
