There’s one last task to be done before the brand new episodes start in two weeks, and that is to clear the feedback deck. I always appreciate your emails, and I want to give each of them at least some attention, so in this episode, I respond to every email and iTunes review that has come in over the last five years since episode 37 was recorded.[Editor Note: This was in the old feed, which isn’t on there anymore.]
Quite a few links are mentioned in the episode. They are as follows:
* An article about the Marvel sliding timeline from previous show guest J.R. Fettinger
* Email writer Aiden mentioned two novellas, but the included links are defunct
* Anecdotal account of the Polaris Nuclear Sub
* J.R. again, now dressed as Spider-Man!
* A book about all the old Marvel ads from Amazon Smile (or just use regular Amazon, but Smile gives money to your chosen charity)
* Aunt May as Spider-Man (*shudder*)
* Fellow Spider-Podcaster from Brazil doing Uncle Ben’s work in Portuguese
In future, should you wish to respond to our thoughts on the show, you can do so by writing to us here. Feedback is always welcome!
Stay tuned for Vietnam a Go-Go, Followed by Season 2.Wed, 15 Dec 2021 - 99 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 40: ASM 52 & X-MEN 35

ASM Classics is back!
Josh, Don, and Jon are once again joined by Stephen Lacey of the Fantasticast to look at an issue of Amazing Spider-Man, in this case that’s issue 51 where Spidey and Jonah Jameson find themselves “In the Clutches of the Kingpin!” Come give a listen!Mon, 18 Oct 2021 - 97 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics “Lost” Episode 38: ASM #50
It’s been a long road getting from there to here. It’s been a long time, but the time is finally here for “Spider-Man No More!” There is a bit of a story behind this “lost” episode. First of all, Stephen Lacey is back with us to talk Amazing Spider-Man 50, but Fall 2011 was before he became co-host of the the world-renowned Fantasticast, and we loved having him on to talk about the issue. Sadly, though, the recording malfunctioned, and we lost the first 40 minutes of the recording, which included the iconic trash can scene from the issue. We had to get together again a little bit later to rediscuss the first part of the issue, and then THAT recording was lost as well. So we got together AGAIN to rerediscuss that part. HOPEFULLY, Jon’s editing skills are masterful, so you’ll hardly even be able to tell that there is a recording break or that the first part of the episode was recorded a little bit after the rest. Hope you enjoy!Thu, 22 Apr 2021 - 96 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 37: ASM 49 “Lost Episode”
Hello, it’s me. I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to listen as we go over everything in a Spidey comic. They say that time’s supposed to heal ya, but I ain’t–
Waaaait a minute! This isn’t an Adele song! It’s a brand new episode of Amazing Spider-Man Classics, that’s what it is!
What?! You mean you unsubscribed??? What a fool! …er, I mean, that’s probably understandable cuz it’s been a while. But the show is on its way to making a comeback. Beginning with this here episode right here.
So here’s the lowdown. This is the first of three episodes from years and years ago that I am calling “lost” episodes. In it, Josh and Don help me take a look at the ins, the outs, and the drama of Amazing Spider-Man 49. Over the next few weeks, two more episodes will come your way with a special guest walking with us through issues 50-52. And then I’m gonna do an episode where I sit down and clean out the email bag.
And then the show will be back to new episodes. With some changes. But you’ll hear about that only if you listen, which you should definitely do!
And I hope you enjoy it 🙂Tue, 20 Apr 2021 - 95 - ASM Classics Episode 36: ASM #48 & Daredevil #27
Welcome to a double-dipping of Spidey goodness. First, the gang heads over to Daredevil 27 to see the Hornhead and the Webhead team-up against the Masked Marauder, who has decreed, “Mike Murdock Must Die!” Next, Spider-Man falls prey to Blackie Drago who attacks him “On the Wings of the Vulture!” in Amazing Spider-Man 48. It’s a big party, as Karen Page, Mike Murdock, Gwen and MJ, Anna Watson and Aunt May, and of course Harry Osborn all join in for this episode of Amazing Spider-Man Classics!

The month of new #1s continues! But this time, it’s Peter Parker: Spider-Man and Webspinners that get the podcasting treatment from barely legal Jon, pubescent Bertone, and preteen Donovan! What new plot has Howard Mackie cooked up for the ex-webhead, and will the Gang ever survive the art of Michael Zulli??!!
Due to the unique theme of this episode, there are no emails read this episode, but if you would like to share your thoughts on the stories we cover or the episode itself, and have them read on the air in the future, let us know and we will talk.Thu, 04 Feb 2021 - 93 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 34: Amazing Spider-Man (Vol II) #1
The DC Relaunch has sent the Classics gang back in time to November 1998, the month of the Spider-Man reboot! Thu, 21 Jan 2021 - 91 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 32: Amazing Spider-Man 46
You’ve waited. You’ve sweated. You’ve sued for creator rights and fought over first place in line to see the movie! Now, here it is, folks! The next episode of Amazing Spider-Man Classics, yaaaaaayyyy!!!
Today, ladies and gentlemen*, we are looking at one episode of Amazing Spider-Man. We had planned for two, but one took long enough. And actually, you may see more episodes in the future with only one issue covered. I’m contemplating the ifs of a format change.
So to join us for this look at Amazing Spider-Man 46 is Tyler Crone, whom you have have heard on Of Mercs and Mutants, From Yellow to Red: A Daredevil Podcast, or as the new regular cohost with me and Zach over at Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast. And he helps us to take a look at the first appearance of the Shocker. It’s full of Silver Spoon goodness and college hijinks galore (but not that kind**). And, we wrap up with a 1966 YEAR IN REVIEW!!
In the email section, a writer mentions his weekly RPGH podcast, Kicked in the Dicebags, and that he played our promo in one particular episode. So if RPGs are up your alley, go check out his show.In the ads, we talk about the ad for the oh-so-NOT-amazing Digi Comp I. If our descriptions weren’t clear or perked your interest, there are some videos here, and here, that show you what this ELECTRONIC COMPUTER BRAIN is all about lol. Yeah, essentially it is a mechanical binary counter that runs from 0 to 7 in binary. Possibly “educational”, and maybe “fun at parties” for like five seconds, but no way it “solves riddles” or “even tells fortunes,” as the ad says. Yes, it adds. One at a time. But no subtraction, multiplication, or memorization. No clue what those ad writers were smoking (other than the money of underage suckers who read comic books).
Wed, 20 Jan 2021 - 90 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 31: ASM 44 & 45

Join Jon, Josh, and Don as they take a look at Amazing Spider-Man 44 and 45, which also, by random happenstance, also feature the return of Dr. Curt Connors as the Lizard.

And to celebrate, the Classics gang takes a break from comic coverage to take a look through the DeLorean’s rearview mirror at how the show began. Thank you so much for listening!Thu, 10 Sep 2020 - 85 - ASM Classics Episode 26: Daredevil 17 & Amazing Spider-Man 38
Farewell, Steve Ditko. We hardly knew thee. This episode of Amazing Spider-Man Classics wraps up the tenure of the artist who helped to create our beloved webslinger and guide him down the most formative steps of his publishing history. With the circumstances surrounding his departure being what they were, it is sadly not the best note on which to depart, but before we talk about A Guy Named Joe in Amazing Spider-Man 38, the Classics gang (continuing to be assisted by Jim Wilson of JimWilsonDesigns, my brother and this website’s designer) finishes out Johnny Romita’s Spider-baptism by fire in Daredevil 17.Original Release Date: 02/20/2011Tue, 08 Sep 2020 - 1h 53min - 84 - ASM Classics Episode 24: Amazing Spider-Man 35 and 36
Thanks for coming back to see us here at Amazing Spider-Man Classics. The three Classicists are all by themselves this time out for a couple of lackluster issues that bring us closer to Steve Ditko’s departure from the title. In Amazing Spider-Man 35, The Molten Man Regrets the shameful things that happened between him and the webhead before, but that doesn’t stop him from coming back for more. Then a right-out loony manages to get superpowers from some rock gas and begins looting, and thus we have the birth of the Looter. All this, and some real treats from Ditko’s Gwen Stacy, too!
Speaking of Gwen, Josh Bertone has written several articles which explore the life of the character, which can be found at the Crawl Space. And speaking of things being at the Crawl Space, Donovan Grant has been writing some reviews of the 1994 animated Spider-Man television series, so check those out!Original Release: 02/03/2011Tue, 01 Sep 2020 - 83 - ASM Classics Episode 23: Amazing Spider-Man 33 & 34
Welcome back to the show, everyone! In this latest episode, the Master Planner trilogy comes to its oh so dramatic conclusion, and Scott Gardner of the Two True Freaks! family of podcasts helps us get there.
Then, Kraven is once again on the prowl, and the team is joined by Brad Douglas of the Spider-Man Crawlspace.
Peter’s life takes some significant turns in these two issues, and Jon, Don, and Josh help you laugh at every one of them. Cuz that’s why they’re called COMICS!Fri, 28 Aug 2020 - 82 - ASM Classics Episode 22: Amazing Spider-Man 31 and 32
The drought is over. The hiatus is ended. Amazing Spider-Man Classics is back with its longest episode ever, just for you for the holiday season!
We are joined again this episode by Eddie deAngelini, comic archive researcher for With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story., as we take a look at Spider-Man’s second annual and thirtieth monthly issues of his series. Also, Brad Douglas of the Spider-Man Crawlspace sticks his head in for some emails at the beginning of the show.
Speaking of emails, Aiden Mohan sent us an email discussing the future of Princess Python, and he references a Punisher cover featuring her that can be found here.
I am starting a new weekly podcast with the new year. If you have any interest in the World War II adventures of a certain caped action hero, join me on January 1 for the premiere of Golden Age Superman. It’s bound to be a great journey through the early adventures of the first superhero.Tue, 25 Aug 2020 - 81 - ASM Classics Episode 21: Amazing Spider-Man Annual 2 and 30

Thu, 20 Aug 2020 - 80 - ASM Classics Episode 20: Amazing Spider-Man 28 & 29
It’s time for pomp, circumstance, and supervillains here at Amazing Spider-Man Classics! After a few days’ delay due to school, the Classics team is now able to take a look at Amazing Spider-Man 28 and 29 with the help of Eddie deAngelini, comic archive researcher for With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, a documentary which got its premiere at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Eddie also holds the claim to fame of owning every single issue of (The) Amazing Spider-Man, having closed his final gap of issue 2 at SDCC, where he met our own Josh Bertone and introduced him to The Man himself.
Though we haven’t stated it here in a while, our mission is the same as always, to explore every single comic book appearance of Spider-Man ever, whether it be as a feature in his own books, a guest appearance in someone else’s, or even a random one-panel cameo somewhere.
This episode, Peter gets to graduate from high school in issue 28 after a tussle with the newly-doused Molten Man. Then Betty has a breakdown when the Scorpion attacks in issue 29, and wouldn’t you know it, Ned Leeds is the one there to comfort her. We have a lot of fun with these, taking time to really get into the character of Liz Allan, as Amazing Spider-Man 28 is basically her swan song for the next 100 issues. You might also learn just how much influence Aunt May has had in the machinations of the history of the Marvel universe.Tue, 18 Aug 2020 - 79 - ASM Classics Episode 19: Amazing Spider-Man 26 and 27
Bring back! Oh, bring back! Oh, bring back my Goblin to me! Welcome again to Amazing Spider-Man Classics where this episode, Jon, Josh, and Donovan take a look at the only two-part Green Goblin story that Steve Ditko gave us. And along the way, we are aided and abetted by the one and only J.R. Fettinger, a voice on the Spider-Man Crawl Space podcast panel and also the author of the Spidey Kicks Butt website.Thu, 13 Aug 2020 - 78 - ASM Classics Episode 18: Amazing Spider-Man 24 & 25
We’re wrapping up September with a bang, Spider-Fans! Not only is this our longest episode yet, not only does this episode include the silver anniversary issue of Amazing Spider-Man, not only do we get to see the first (kinda) appearance of Mary Jane Watson, but also we are joined this episode by none other than Gerard Delatour, reviewer of The Amazing Spider-Man for the Spider-Man Crawl Space (check out those reviews here)!
In Amazing Spider-Man 24 and 25, Mysterio returns in the guise of a psychiatrist, out to catch Spider-Man by proving that he is INSANE. Then, two years of publication come to a head as J. Jonah Jameson uses a robot to catch that web-slinging menace, but at the same time Flash Thompson, Betty Brant, and Liz Allan all converge at Peter’s house right in the middle of a visit by the mysterious Mary Jane Watson. The fit really hits the shan, and you can see the actual page here! And you know you want some funny art, so here you go:
Tue, 11 Aug 2020 - 77 - ASM Classics Episode 17: ASM 23
Emails, emails, and more emails! Between the recording of this episode a month ago and its publication, the emails have begun to stack up, so rather than make you wonderful people wait longer for a response, we recorded an email segment to accompany our somewhat shorter coverage of Amazing Spider-Man 23. And that ended up being half the episode. But keep sending them in. We have a strategy now for addressing emails in a more regular fashion, so never fear to write.
This week, Spider-Man is faced once again by his nemesis from Hollywood, the Green Goblin. We also see the Goblin maskless for the first time, though neither Spider-Man nor readers of the day realized it at the time. That insight adds some extra dimension to the story, which we explore on the episode.
We also explore the ginormity of the Goblin’s ears:
Thu, 06 Aug 2020 - 76 - ASM Classics Episode 16: ASM 21 & 22
Gasp! Shock! This time around, the Classics gang is going SOLO!! Or…um…trio. What do you call it when a group of three is going alone? Whatever that is, that’s what we’re doing. It’s no big deal. We’re just changing up some behind-the-scenes stuff which will mean more guest co-hosts sometimes, as well as the occasional episode with just the three of us.
In this, our latest episode, Jon Wilson, Joshua Bertone, and Donovan Grant venture beyond the realm of the three Pocket Books reprints that Jon had as a youth, looking at Spider-Man’s first fight with the Beetle, and his last fight with the Circus of Crime (at least for a long, long time to come). Along the way, we laugh at Dorrie Evans’ insane demands on Johnny Storm, and Betty Brant’s insane jealousies of Peter.
There was a cool pin-up in issue 21, and I realized I should show more of the pin-ups. (Those were lost to the ether)
As always, I hope you enjoy the episode. We do answer your emails this time around, and we’ll do more next time as well, along with coverage of Amazing Spider-Man 23.Tue, 04 Aug 2020 - 75 - ASM Classics Episode 15: ASM 20 and Avengers 11
In the meantime, we are wrapping up our recording session with the ever valiant, but by now somewhat sleepy Stephen Lacey, of the World of Superman Blog. After this, Jon, Josh, and Donovan have sworn off seven-hour recording sessions. We’ll be recording more frequently for shorter durations, which means more guest co-hosts, and episodes with no guest co-hosts. It’s just gonna be easier. Stephen was great, but we hate to torture people with hours and hours at the mike.
This episode addresses the first appearance of the Scorpion, Mac Gargan, later of Venom fame. We also see Spider-Man co-starring in an issue of The Avengers, or so Stan would have us believe. This episode does run a bit shorter than most of our two-issue episodes, but there is much art fun to be had, mostly with the Avengers book.
Thanks as always for listening. Next episode, the original trio return to look at issues 21 and 22 all by themselves. Can’t wait to see you there!Thu, 30 Jul 2020 - 74 - ASM Classics Episode 14: ASM 18 & 19
Welcome back, Spidey fans, to the British invasion!!! Yes, we are joined again this week by UK Superman blogger Stephen Lacey, to take a look at Amazing Spider-Man 18 and 19. Thrill to every minute as Peter Parker runs from a fight, flirts with his aunt, and smashes through glass with nary a scratch. The Sandman and the Enforcers are out in … erm, force, and enjoy them while you can, because neither will grace the pages of a Spidey book for quite some time to come.
The new Facebook link to the left points to a NEW Facebook page. If you were a member of the previous group, I invite you to “Like” the new page, where I will be notifying you of new episode postings and such. If such activity doesn’t interest you, that’s fine too.
I compiled quite the collection of images from these two books. It was a fun couple of months, and there was plenty more I could have pulled, but these are the highlights.
Thanks as always for listening. Please feel free to comment below or send us an email. We also always welcome reviews on iTunes. Emails and iTunes reviews will receive responses on the show. Enjoy!Tue, 28 Jul 2020 - 73 - ASM Classics Episode 13: Amazing Spider-Man 17
Hello? Anybody still out there?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that’s right! After 40 days of spider-fast, Amazing Spider-Man Classics is back!
This month, Jon, Don, and Josh are joined by British blogger Stephen Lacey (author of the World of Superman blog) as they discuss and deliberate the beginning of Ditko’s first great trilogy.
Also, introducing a new feature on Facebook. A bit of fandom fun may be had at the pages for Team Betty, Team Liz, and Team Mary Jane. This is in addition to the main Facebook page for the show.
All the delays have been to due to a variety of scheduling conflicts. Things that, in the end, just couldn’t be avoided. The show has been fighting to exist behind the scenes, even if you couldn’t see it. Unfortunately, our thrice-monthly schedule has essentially lost a month in the process. So there are no “July” episodes. With lots of recordings under the belt over the last couple weeks, the next two episodes should be out before the end of the month, and then we’ll be back on schedule after that.
Thanks as always for listening.Thu, 23 Jul 2020 - 72 - ASM Classics Episode 12: Amazing Spider-Man Annual 1
Six sinister welcomes to all you Spider-Fans out there who have returned for another round of shenanigans with Jon, Josh, Don, and our guest this month, Michael Bailey (of Views from the Long Box).
This episode we have served up for you a full plate of Spider-Man annual goodness from 1964 as Spider-Man tackles the Sinister Six! Along the way, Dr. Octopus meets his future beloved and Aunt May acts like she smoked a fatty before the story started.
We also read emails this time around, and a letter from Stephen Lacey references a Silver Age Superman review that can be found here.
And, as always, here is some awkward art, just for you!
But there was also some oh-so-awesome art in this issue. If you’d like to see what I mean, here are links to the full-page Ditko splashes of Spider-Man tackling each of the Sinister Six!
Electro Kraven Mysterio Sandman Vulture Octopus
And that ties up what were to be our June episodes. We have another set of three coming at you later in July as soon as our next guest co-host comes back from a vacation trip. We’ll be bringing you the funny from Amazing Spider-Man 17-20 and The Avengers 11, so hang in there! In the meantime, write us and tell us what you think of the show. Even have your words read on the air to an audience of hundreds! You may send us an email, follow us on Facebook, or leave a review on iTunes. See you next time!!Tue, 21 Jul 2020 - 71 - ASM Classics Episode 11: ASM 16 & Tales to Astonish 57
Welcome to our latest episode of Amazing Spider-Man Classics, the show dedicated to covering every feature book, as well as every guest and cameo appearance we can find of the amazing Spider-Man. Our June episodes are a bit behind due to scheduling conflicts, but we think you’ll find they’ll be worth the wait. This week, Michael Bailey (of Views from the Long Box) joins Jon, Josh, and Don to take a look at Tales to Astonish 57 and Amazing Spider-Man 16, and it’s quite the wild ride. And the daughter Lily makes a cameo along the way.
Just a word of warning, Spider-philes. We’re talking about Hank Pym this issue, and what is the most common single topic in regard to the Pyms? Did you say wife-slapping? Yes, indeedy! And the ASM Classics gang takes the topic to bold new frontiers in the latest episode. So have a laugh with us
Speaking of laughs, here are some awesome pictures.
During the course of the episode, our guest Michael Bailey mentions that Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel would eventually write for Strange Tales. He did this under the nom de plume of Joe Carter for issues 112 and 113, introducing us to kooky villains the Eel and the Plantman. Little FYI there for you…
So, there you go, fellas and fellettes. As for the next ep, I say in there that it should be about a week, but it may be more like ten days because in a week, I have my Spanish final, but I’ll do my best! Make sure to write us in and let us know what you think.
Fri, 17 Jul 2020 - 70 - ASM Classics Episode 10: ASM 14 & 15!
Another Tuesday, where the ASM Classics Gang are back talking about some Goblins and MORE!
Welcome back to Amazing Spider-Man Classics, where we are committed to covering every feature issue, as well as every guest and cameo appearance we can find of the Amazing Spider-Man.
Kicking off the month of June, the Amazing Spider-Man Classics group is joined by the ever-lovin’, blue-eyed Brad Douglas of the Spider-Man Crawl Space. He helps the usual crew of Jon, Josh, and Donovan take a look at the first appearance of the man who engineered the Clone Saga, the mastermind who replaced Tony Stark and gathered a group of criminals to rule in place of the Avengers, the one, the only Green Goblin. And for his first ingenious plan, he will…..take Spider-Man to Hollywood so the Enforcers can beat him up.
Well, I guess we can’t win them all. And this wonderful masterwork is followed up by the debut of Chameleon’s prize chump, Kraven the Hunter….who doesn’t seem to be Russian yet, since he comes over from Africa and gets deported to South America. But we’ll get origin stories later. That’s what the eighties are for.
Tue, 14 Jul 2020 - 2h 08min - 69 - ASM Classics Episode 9: ASM 12 & 13
Happy Thursday folks, below are the original text from the episode, We will see you Tuesday!:Here we are, drawing to the end of another month. You listeners sure have been awesome, and I want to thank you sincerely for giving this show the attention it’s gotten.
The usual rogues are joined for the final time this month by Jeffrey Taylor (of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast). The books this week are Amazing Spider-Man 12 and 13, so we’re wrapping up the amazingly creepy Betty Brant saga as the chase by Dr. Octopus comes to a close with the unmasking of Spider-Man, and then seeing the first appearance of your favorite fishbowl head, Mysterio. And there’s even a special cameo appearance in the show around the 1:00 mark.
Also, the blooper reel is extra long. Well, just cuz. You’ll see.
Here’s a funny Flash moment, making an arse of himself.
Also, there is some speculation in the episode on when Mysterio gets a name. Looked it up and that’s going to happen in 1983 with Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe 7.
Well, that’s it for May. I’ve been trying to decide what kind of release schedule I want to follow. Though I may change later, for now I’m gonna follow the “pattern” (using the term loosely) that I’ve been using so far, so expect Episode 10 on or around June 16.Don’t forget that we welcome your feedback and will read it on the air (unless you ask us not to, of course), on this episode or on the X-Men Blog. So send us an email, follow us on Facebook, or leave a review on iTunes. And we’ll see you in June with Amazing Spider-Man 14-16 and Annual 1, as well as Tales to Astonish 57. Hang loose, Webheads!Thu, 09 Jul 2020 - 68 - ASM Classics Episode 8: ASM 10 & 11
Here we are, born to be kings, we’re the princes of the universe! In other words, Amazing Spider-Man Classics is back for more of Spider-Man’s classic adventures. Continuing this month with Jeffrey Taylor (co-host of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast), Jon, Bertone, and the Donmeister bring to you the unfolding saga of Betty Brant.
Amazing Spider-Man Classics is devoted to covering every main Spider-Man book as well as every guest and cameo appearance we can find. This time, Amazing Spider-Man 10 and 11 are up, with a stop along the way for a cameo in Strange Tales 119. This wraps Spidey’s first full year of publication and launches a second.
Unfortunately, Jon found his childhood violated by the ideas presented concerning Dr. Octopus and Betty, not to mention Betty and her brother Bennett. Are these the same stories I read as a 6-year-old?
Tue, 07 Jul 2020 - 67 - ASM Classics Episode 7: ASM 9!
Here we are with a new month and a new round of classic Spidey episodes. This month, Joshua, Donovan, and I have joining us Mr. Jeffrey Taylor, co-host of the world-renowned From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast. This is a special occasion for me because his and Michael Bailey’s work over on that show is what got me into comic book podcasts in the first place and helped to inspire the show you are looking at now. So I strongly urge you to check them out if you haven’t already.
Amazing Spider-Man Classics is devoted to covering every Spider-Man book, as well as every guest or cameo appearance we can find. This week, we kick things off with a look back at a Golden Age villain of the Justice Society, Evil Star! Wait… I mean, Electro, who is Spider-Man’s villain. Sorry, I get confused some times. But can you blame me? If you think Jeffrey’s DC-ness is influencing my brain, just look at this guy…
We give a nod to a cameo in The Avengers 3, and then we have a ball of a time discussing Amazing Spider-Man 9, along the way speculating on Betty Brant’s affection for her brother. We’re talking real Star Wars love here.
Thu, 02 Jul 2020 - 66 - ASM Classics Episode 6: ASM 7 & 8
What? You’re back? You must be looking for some classic Spider-Man goodness. Well, this week serves up the goods for Amazing Spider-Man 7 and 8. Jon, Don, and Josh are joined again by Zach Henderson from Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast, as we wrap up our April episodes (even though it’s May now cuz Jon had laptop problems). You’ll get the Vulture’s return, the stupidest robot in the history of robots, and Spidey crashing a party in order to score some team-up action. Strange Tales 115 also gets some brief attention, because Amazing Spider-Man Classics is committed to covering every Spider-Man book, as well as every Spider-Man guest or cameo appearance that we can find.
Note: The blooper reel contains some discussion of a religious icon that is rather indelicate in its humor. Feel free to turn off the podcast during the closing music if such talk may offend you.
Now, who wants some out of context theater? We let our imagination run wild with these.
So that’s it for this week. Let us know what you think. You can send us email, leave reviews on iTunes, drop us a line at Facebook, or even leave a comment here.
Thanks again for listening. We’ll be back later in May with a new guest co-host to help us tear into Amazing Spider-Man 9-13.ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: 05/07/2010
Original Cover ASM Classics 06Tue, 30 Jun 2020 - 65 - ASM Classics Episode 5: ASM 5 & 6
Welcome back to Amazing Spider-Man Classics, where we are committed to taking you through every issue, every guest feature, and every cameo appearance we can find of the amazing Spider-Man!
This week, Jon, Josh, and Don are again joined by Zach (from Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast) to go back to Spidey’s main book after our team-up time-out last week. Spider-Man has to cross swords, or finger guns, with the metal-masked menace of the Fantastic Four — Dr. Doom! And after that, he then takes the world’s shortest vacation to the Everglades to confront the Lizard!
Two of our favorite panels mentioned on the show are evil Peter
Some notes about the show this week: In the intro, I mention a survey in which you are invited to take part. That can be found here. Also, despite his frequent appearances on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, Dr. Doom and Spider-Man simply have not crossed paths many times over the years. After this issue, Dr. Doom does not feature in another Spider-Man story until Amazing Spider-Man Annual 14, and they don’t even meet face to face there. Their next actual meeting is Marvel Treasury Edition featuring Superman and Spider-Man 28 from 1981.
Please write us notes. You have lots of places you can do it. You can send us email, leave reviews on iTunes, drop us a line at Facebook, or even leave a comment here. Amazing Spider-Man Classics will return next week to close out April with Amazing Spider-Man 7 and 8. See you there!
Original Release Date: 4/23/2010
Thu, 25 Jun 2020 - 64 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 4: Strange Tales Annual 2
Flamin’ fireballs! It’s the first-ever Spider-Man team-up and the lucky sonovagun is the Human Torch! Or, since technically this is Johnny Storm’s annual, maybe we should make him seem like the lead with Spidey the guest star? Ah, well, it doesn’t matter. This was a pretty wonky ride, so join Jon Wilson, Josh Bertone, and Donovan Grant, as they are joined by guest co-host Zach Henderson (from Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast), and get ready for “one of the most epic thrillers of all time!!”
We also take a brief look at Spider-Man’s backup appearance in The Fantastic Four Annual 1.
Feedback will also be read this week. We got a lot of responses, including a question answered by some guy named Stan Lee. If you’d like to contact the show and have your words read on the air and your name proclaimed to millions (that’s Gerald K. Millions, our sound editor), please email us, leave a review on iTunes, or simply comment on this page.
Amazing Spider-Man Classics is dedicated to covering every issue of Spider-Man’s series, as well as every guest and cameo appearance we can find. Join us again next week for Amazing Spider-Man 5 and 6, featuring Spider-Man’s first tangle with dastardly Dr. Doom and the loquacious Lizard!Wed, 24 Jun 2020 - 63 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 3: Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4
“I almost wish for an opponent who’d give me a run for my money!” Oh, poor Spidey, be careful what you wish for. Because this week, Jon, Bertone, and Donovan wrap up their first round of episodes with Doctor Octopus and the Sandman! And they will both send Spider-Man running away with his spinnerets tucked between his legs.
Since there was no episode last week, perhaps a word is due on the schedule of this podcast. It’s gonna be near-weekly. Every month, Jon is gonna go through a stack of issues with a team of cohorts, and those episodes will be released over the course of the month. So expect two, three, or four episodes every month, on not quite a weekly schedule. This wraps up March’s episodes. And if all goes well, there will be more in a couple of weeks.
A note from this week’s convo. The team speculates on Liz Allan’s future after Peter Parker’s graduation, but no one takes the time to actually look up the info, cuz we’re too busy having fun. So, for the record, Liz Allan says good-bye to Peter in Amazing Spider-Man 28 after graduation. She appears again as a surprise in issue 30. But then she’s gone from Peter’s life until Amazing Spider-Man 132.
If you’re new to the show, Amazing Spider-Man Classics is devoted to covering every issue of Spider-Man’s feature titles, as well as every guest and cameo appearance we can find.
We hope you’re continuing to enjoy the show. Please leave comments here or email us, and hear your heartfelt missives on the air! Plus it’ll make our little spider-hearts leap to hear from you. You can also subscribe to the show in iTunes.
Coming later in April: Strange Tales Annual 2, Amazing Spider-Man 5-8, and more!Thu, 16 Aug 2018 - 62 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 2: ASM 1 & 2
The Webhead is back! Six months after his one-off story in the canceled Amazing Fantasy, Spider-Man was granted his own book, which hit shelves in late 1962. Jon, Bertone, and Donovan take a look at the introductions of such essential characters like J. Jonah Jameson and Betty Brant while laughing at Ditko’s cooky villains like the Tinkerer and the Chameleon.
Amazing Spider-Man Classics is devoted to covering every issue of Spider-Man’s various titles, as well as every guest appearance or cameo in other books that we can find.
Some notes: Right at the beginning of the discussion, I say that Jack Kirby draws Spider-Man with Steve Ditko inking. I meant to say “on the cover” somewhere in there. The interior arts are, of course, Steve Ditko’s. At one point, we discuss the Chameleon’s career immediately following this story, but we aren’t positive of our facts. Turns out that after this book, he showed up in Amazing Spider-Man 15 and then gave Iron Man and the Hulk a few troubles. He didn’t show up in Amazing Spider-Man again until issue 80, and then 186, and not again until 306. So the Chameleon was a pretty scarce villain until the late 80s.
We’re amazed at the rapid attraction of the show and are grateful for the support received from the Spider-Man Crawlspace, which has a great resource of Spidey news and fan items and their own podcast that is more than worth checking out. We hope we can continue to live up to your hopes and dreams. If we do, we wanna know! And if we don’t, you better tell us how we failed! Comment below, or email us!Tue, 14 Aug 2018 - 1h 05min - 61 - Amazing Spider-Man Classics Episode 1: Amazing Fantasy 15
Welcome to the Premiere Episode of the return of ASM Classics. Below is the original text from the show!
“Here it is, folks! The start of your journey through every Spider-Man book and guest appearance, beginning with Amazing Fantasy 15 and going forward indefinitely. In Amazing Spider-Man Classics, we’ll be reviewing and discussing every issue of every Spider-Man series, giving the same treatment to his guest appearances in other books, and tossing at least a mention at every cameo we can find.
In this introductory episode, Jon is joined by Bertone and Donovan to look at the origins of our favorite web-slinger in the lead story of a canceled anthology sci-fi book. In the future, we will usually handle two issues or more per episode, but we spent some extra time relishing and poking fun at this Twilight Zone-style story.
Once during the episode, Jon mentions a Michael Bailey blog entry that can be Found Here. ”Mon, 18 Jun 2018
