Tue, 08 Nov 2022 - 39min - 47 - When life calls you to heal
I enjoyed a powerful conversation with my guest Dawn Kohler about how even the most successful people struggle with feeling not good enough and are actually coming from a place of trying to provethemselves rather than express themselves from a more confident and authentic self.
Dawn was an award-winning entrepreneur herself, when she was abruptly summoned to take a life-altering course. What followed was an extraordinary healing journey that gave her profound insights and a deep understanding of the human dynamic and how it plays out at home, work, and in our communities. Combining these insights, and her business experience, Dawn became a sought-after Executive Coach helping leaders understand and enhance their impact on others and their contribution to the world. Her clients have included many of the most influential women in entertainment, as well as senior leaders at such companies as Sony Pictures, NBCUniversal, Lionsgate, DreamWorks, Fox, Snapchat, Disney, and Amazon.
I talk to Dawn about her recent memoir, The Messages, which is a prophetic journey she experienced 25 years ago and how it has become relevant today. I also ask her about her role in the Board of Step-Up, a non-profit organization to help mentor teen girls in low-income areas.
Points discussed:
How the self that Dawn had created was hijacked by the one she was born to be when she felt her body couldn't even get out of the car. (2.27)The messages brought up feelings of abandonment in therapy which led to memories of sexual abuse as child. (5:37)Handling the challenge of raising three young children while releasing painful repressed memories (10.46)How understanding the feelings of transference during therapy, led to Dawn's true awakening.(18:08)How an awakening allows us to feel an expansion of our true self (14.42)Even the most successful of people have the 'Not good enough' wound. (16.16)Experiencing a Kundalini awakening before Dawn's encounter with the Divine, preparing her to receive the main messages. (23:20)Dawn's clear calling to WRITE (30.00)Messages to not follow those who 'judge' and how healing the world is still possible. (33:00)'What do you need to do, to be who you already are' ? Tue, 25 Oct 2022 - 46min - 46 - Follow your heart
In my previous two episodes of Breaking Free, I discussed some of my favorite books and talked about how reading can increase your confidence in many areas. Well my guest this week shares how reading helped him follow his heart and find his purpose in life.
Mostafa Salameh grew up in a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan and found a way to reach England. He taught himself English by watching Sesame Street which eventually opened up a whole new world for him when he started to read inspirational books. The Alchemist, The Prophet, The Celestine Prophecy were the stepping stones to him becoming a great Explorer, Inspirational Speaker, Fundraiser and Author himself. His memoir DREAMS OF A REFUGEE is an extraordinary story of faith, bravery and perseverance with a foreword written by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Mostafa is the only Palestinian-Jordanian and one of only 20 people to climb the Seven Summits and reach the South Pole and the North Pole - known as the ‘Explorers Grand Slam’ . He skied Greenland from north to south and his next big goal is to run 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days.
Mostafa is the amazing proof that you can dream big and make anything happen if you open your heart with full conviction. His passion is changing people's lives and he has found it through climbing
for charity, raising awareness about causes that are close to his heart and giving others the opportunity to experience adventures alongside him.
His courage to commit to climbing Everest and ask for King Abdullah of Jordan's support to do so, when he had no prior experience or the required fitness levels, is astounding to say the least !
Discussed in this episode:
How King Abdullah II of Jordan generously offered to write the foreword of Mostafa's memoir (4:00)How life in a Palestinian refugee camp with strong family bonds shaped his personality (5:45)Life in London starts in the basement of The Jordanian Embassy in Belgravia (8:30)Learning English from Sesame Street and The Sun newspaper while working in the restaurant kitchen (12:00)Watching Mel Gibson in Braveheart inspires Mostafa to study in Edinburgh (13:45)The dream of climbing Everest happened in 2004 and turned his life around (16:00)The steps Mostafa took to make his dream a reality even though he had a fear of heights (20:00)Inspired to help others with LOWEST to HIGHEST for CANCER after meeting a young cancer patient (35:40)Follow your heart and the 777 challenge (40:00)References:

Tue, 11 Oct 2022 - 53min - 45 - The power of reading 2
In part ONE of "The power of reading", I shared excerpts from two books that helped me better understand the world and myself and I have chosen three more that have stood out as favorites to share in this episode. Each one of them gave me valuable insights on what it is to be human. How we try to avoid pain, how success when driven by fear leads to unhappiness, how vulnerability is wrongly described as a weakness when it is in fact the strength that allows us to experience and live life fully.
I explain and read parts that I hope can resonate and be helpful in some way. I also share a favorite application that I use to find out about good reads ;)
Points discussed in this episode:
A great app to use when you want to choose books to read or keep a note of what you would like to remember to read in the future (2:00)The untethered soul by Michael Singer (3:00)The two choices we have when dealing with emotional pain (4:10)How do we truly answer the question 'WHO ARE YOU?" (7:40)What it's like to NOT SUFFER? (10:00)Will Smith's memoir and why I think he slapped actor Chris Rock at the Oscars (12:30)Reacting versus responding (15:10)Daring Greatly by Brene Brown (22:00)Debunking the myth that vulnerability is a weakness (24:30)Others share the things that make them feel most vulnerable (29:00)The three important lessons learned about joy and light from those who have spent time in sorrow and darkness. Tue, 27 Sep 2022 - 35min - 44 - The power of reading
I believe there is a strong link between reading and feeling more confident. Books and stories introduce us to characters and more introverted protagonists that we may not have seen or heard from otherwise in a world that tends to celebrate extroverts. It helps us gain empathy for ourselves and others as we begin to understand the differences and similarities in people. I have read books that made me laugh out loud, cry, helped me discover something about myself and change some destructive habits to healthier ones.
In part ONE of this episode I share excerpts from two books that helped me better understand the world and myself, 'Notes on a nervous planet' by Matt Haig and the other is Mindfulness ( a practical guide to FINDING PEACE IN A FRANTIC WORLD ) which has scientifically grounded techniques you can apply in the midst of your day to day challenging lives. I also share a ten minute guided meditation that will help calm your mind and connect more deeply with sensations in your body.
Discussed in this episode:
Matt Haig invites us to feel calmer happier and question the habits of the digital age in one of my favorite books NOTES ON A NERVOUS PLANET (3:23)Understanding how technology contributes to our state of continual partial attention and how it can be addictive. The World Health Organization now classifies video game addiction as an official mental disorder (6:55)We can see why we get distracted so easily when we look at all the things that have come into our lives since the year 2000 (8:40) Another favorite book of mine is MINDFULNESS / a practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world, which helped me live better in the present moment (10:50)A chapter on how to escape the vicious cycle (12:12)Ten minute guided body scan meditation (15:00)How changing our thoughts is the key to changing our actions (24:40)References:

Tue, 13 Sep 2022 - 26min - 43 - Confidence to express your true self
It's Pride 2022 but many people still continue to question why gay people need to express their sexuality or speak out and share their authentic self. Perhaps It is hard to imagine how it feels to have to hide parts of yourself when you are in a position of privilege. However, I believe that everyone has a responsibility to listen to others who do not have the same privileges and join them in the fight for equality in this world.
My guest shares very honestly and openly what it feels like to grow up without a voice. What it feels like to not be seen and expected to follow unrealistic rules in a culture and family that follows traditions strictly. What it feels like to be loved conditionally and how hard she has been trying to be loved for who she actually is.
Discussed in the episode:
How feeling unseen as the youngest growing up in a large family and constantly compared to older siblings, led to making life choices that were very different and may not have been made otherwise (1:35)Beginning to question on what basis past decisions were made (5:10)Trying to be different and stand out was seen as rebellion (8:23)Moving away to study at the age eighteen was eye opening and developed a new awareness and confidence (10:00)Daily calls from back home with a 7pm curfew to abide by, started to be challenged and questioned (14:20)Explaining the family dynamic of perpetrator-victim-rescuer (16:45)Growing up in a family where girls and boys are separated until it is time to marry (17:55)Exploring what it is to be gay and the need to escape from arranged marriage (23:45)The relief that followed after expressing her needs for the first time at the age of twenty-four (31:00)Not wanting to lie anymore and speaking her truth to family and friends, gave her more confidence regardless of the outcome (32:30)Explaining the benefits of healing past traumas with therapy and the power of recognizing personal triggers (37:30)The power of language and how rephrasing what we say can change how we make others feel (42:00)Connect with Rania

Tue, 23 Aug 2022 - 44min - 42 - Inside a coaching session
Today's episode differs from previous ones on Breaking Free, it is special in the sense that it is an actual introductory coaching session with a client. The client wants to discover why he can't make decisions lately with regards to his career choices and love life. Issues can not be solved in one session but some clarity and understanding can be gained which will help in moving forward.

The issue that the client requires help with is moving forward and making decisions about his career and love life (3:00)Realizing that after years of being told what to do and how to do it, making decisions in the last few years after living away from home is scary (5:50)How lack of trust in the self can be a result of parents not allowing their children to make mistakes (7:00)Growing up in a conservative family with an abusive father resulted in a fear of making mistakes (8:08)A recent example of struggling with a decision is shared (10:00)A pattern of relationships with dependent partners emerges (13;25)Discovering a trigger and the best way to deal with it (17:00)How to respond in Adult instead of reacting with a child-like or parent dynamic (19:10)Codependency (24:00)Unlearning what we learned is a big step forward (26:00)Learning to love your inner child instead of bullying and numbing the self (28:05)Realizing we don't know what we don't know (33:00)Where to look for support (37:00)Takeaways and summary of what the client gained from the session. Tue, 09 Aug 2022 - 41min - 41 - Healing fatherless daughters
The term 'Daddy issues' is thrown around lightly but it really does have a seriously negative impact on your romantic relationships.
My guest Danielle Robins, who is a certified coach and the founder of Be You Unlimited, works specifically with women who are experiencing a father wound. That includes any woman who has grown up with an absent or available / unattached father and experiencing what is called 'the fatherless daughter syndrome'.
Her passion to work and specialise in this area was driven from her own personal wounds that needed healing - Danni grew up with with a physical father who was emotionally unavailable, abusive, dysfunctional and now absent.
We discuss how the fatherless daughter syndrome can show up with a full range of emotions and characteristics like low self worth, low confidence, trust issues, anger, resentment, unhealthy boundaries, promiscuity, unhealthy drive to succeed or toxic relationships. Danielle transforms the pain from the past into a gift in the present and coaches women to build healthy boundaries at home and at work and become unlimited.
Gaining more confidence is something we can all do, so developing more awareness about our childhood wounds is the best place to start.

Tue, 26 Jul 2022 - 39min - 40 - Confidence coaching
I have been asked a few times, "What is confidence coaching", "How can someone be coached to gain more confidence" ? So.... in this episode I explain how.
Coaching is all about discovering the patterns of behaviour and fears that are holding you back. Once that is done, you will learn how to recognize your triggers and learn how to deal with them better. Your perspective about things will change and you will feel more motivated to take little steps towards the changes or goals that once scared you. Self-confidence comes from a trust in yourself. A trust that you will be able to handle things. We are simply more confident in some areas of our life than others because we are more experienced in that area and have had positive outcomes. The good news is, you can transform negative experiences into more positive ones with the right guidance and support, just like a weak muscle can be slowly trained to become a strong one.
Discussed in this episode:
Confidence is a skill that we can develop by understanding the reasons behind the fears that have been holding you back (1:00)Focusing on the areas you already have confidence in and finding out why (3:20)An example of how a bad experience creates a negative belief (4:40)People-pleasing could be a reason behind feeling insecure and less confident (6:15)Why the fear of success can be just as strong as the fear of failure (7:45)Brene Brown's advice on how to ignore critics and trolls (10:20)Actress Salma Hayek's take on critique (11:10)The changes that happens when you gain more confidence (12:20)The negative effects of comparison (13:00)The desire for more confidence is actually a desire for less fear and anxiety (14:30)The power of visualization (18:00)Connect with Rania

Do you have a more masculine achievement impulse brain or a more feminine utopian impulse brain? Neuroscience has discovered how to market differently to each type. Your type effects your decisions and how you feel about the world. Understanding the differences between each is vital when it comes to marketing but it is also super helpful to understand when navigating your personal relationships.

She has been running her own neuromarketing business for almost 14 years now, working with clients such as Dove, Honda and Lloyds Bank in that time. She has recently completed her MSc in Applied Neuroscience and is a well known speaker, both nationally and internationally, on ways neuroscience can be applied within marketing.

Mon, 27 Jun 2022 - 43min - 38 - Confidence through words
How can writing and poetry increase your confidence? That's what I wanted to find out in this episode of Breaking free by talking to my guest Adukeh.
Adukeh (which means ‘beloved one’) is a London-based poet with Yoruba heritage. She has a passion for the arts, particularly their ability to heal and empower through storytelling and expression. Major themes of her work include beauty, brokenness, stillness, and healing.
She describes how she found solace in poetry and journalling as a child who was shy and how in later years it helped her cope with the grief of losing her father. Adukeh reads two of her poems and explains where her inspiration comes from as we compare it to a photograph frozen in time.
Her poetry has given her confidence and has become her calling, taking her to many venues, from cookshops and community centres to cathedrals. She has performed at the Highams Park Festival of Culture, Unveiling Arts Festival, and was selected to perform at Theatre Deli’s Sharp Scratches mental health night.
She also devises and runs poetry workshops and events for various organisations including Tower Hamlets and loves to collaborates with other artists for poetry-related events.

Mon, 23 May 2022 - 37min - 36 - Standing up to abuse with confidence
Warning: This episode discusses domestic abuse.
My guest Julie Randall juggled a successful career in sales, finance & management as an employee and then a self-employed business owner alongside bringing up three children. But she also survived several toxic relationships, which were physically and mentally abusive during her 30-year career.
Julie gives us an insight into how a strong, capable and intelligent woman like herself couldn't even see that what she was living with was actually domestic abuse. The toxic relationships were disguised as loving and kind at first but then developed into what sounds like living an intense psychological thriller movie for years on end. She was left feeling confused, depressed, suicidal and unable to trust herself to make decisions but eventually gained the confidence to secretly question what she was being told by her perpetrator, break the pattern and ask the police for help.
Her experiences led to a change in her career and she now works as a female leadership & empowerment coach/mentor. Helping women to let go of toxic relationships, move on after domestic abuse, overcome uncertainty, gain confidence, set boundaries, take back control and move forward empowered to live life on their terms.
Discussed in this episode:
How being in a toxic relationship isn't always something you can notice straight away (1:45)Red flags get mixed up with the nice gestures that also happen which left Julie confused and blaming herself (3:34)Julie's first experience of a toxic relationship started when she married at the age of nineteen after three years together (6:50)She describes the systematic and constant manipulation she endured for eight years with a partner she had a business with (8:23)How the information she shared was then used against her (10:45)Why women tend to justify bad and abusive behavior (11:55)Living in fear silently (13:00)Noticing a pattern in the abuse was the first step towards Julie questioning it (17:35)The danger of teaching little girls to always be nice and people please (21:45)She didn't take instant action but started to plot her escape (24:00)The turning point was when Julie's perpetrator threatened her friend (26:35)Moving on without all the answers is possible. Tue, 22 Mar 2022 - 27min - 32 - Balancing your masculine and feminine energies
How would you describe your ideal partner? A strong man who has the ability to be sensitive and communicate his feelings ? A woman who is both confident and vulnerable and caring?
Well those are a combination of male and female energies that are in balance in one person. (Strong and confident) is a male energy while (sensitive, communicative, vulnerable and caring) is a female energy. Having a balance of both makes you a great person to work with or be in a relationship with. The energies complement one another. Having a more masculine or feminine energy doesn't always have to relate to your actual gender.
In today's episode which coincides with international women's day, I will ask some questions and share tips that will really help you notice where you might need help in boosting your less dominant energy and in turn...start to ooze more confidence.
You will also learn about the power of poses and how standing or sitting a certain way can actually increase your testosterone and lower your cortisol levels ! It only takes a few minutes and can help you feel more confident before a meeting, interview or that special first date.
As women living in a very masculine world that is all about doing and achieving, It has become harder to feel our feminine power. We may have given value to more male qualities and forgotten how powerful the feminine energy is within us. Men have not be allowed either to show or express their feminine energies which has led to rigidity and an increase in male suicide.
In order to feel whole, we must embrace both masculine and feminine, so get ready to awaken them starting from today.
Discussed In this episode:
How to increase your confidence by balancing the feminine and masculine energies within you (0.50)Why we lose our spark early on in our childhood (1:50)What happens when you repress one of the energies (3:10)3 helpful questions for thought and reflection(4:10)Why somme relationships and partnerships are difficult (5:25)Ideal partner traits (6:05)Masculine energy traits (7:03)Feminine energy traits (7:25)Things you can do to increase your feminine energies (7:44)Things you can do to increase your masculine energies (8:37)Power poses that increase your testosterone and lower your cortisol levels in minutes (9:44)A gender fluid female KING (11:16)How finding your big YES will help you say No to less important things (12:00)Things to say YES to (12:44)How you can awaken the powerful wild energies that are within you (13:05)'Your a goddamn Cheetah!' Tue, 08 Mar 2022 - 17min - 31 - Becoming sexually confident
We are all confident in some areas of our lives more than we are in others, but sexual confidence is rarely felt or talked about. Feeling confident in your body and knowing what pleasures you, gives you confidence in the way that you carry yourself and interact with others. Our sexuality is an important and integral part of being human, so why do we shy away from exploring it more openly? Why do parents find it difficult to discuss sexuality and body autonomy with their children? Why is shame tied to sexual pleasure in so many cultures?
My guest in today's episode of Breaking Free is sex educator Zina Malas. Born in the UK and raised in the UAE, Zina is a third culture kid who’s lived in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UK. She started out her career in media and research and made the shift to sexual health after becoming a mother to two young girls and noticed a lack of sexual education and knowledge in the Middle East.
Discussed in this episode:
Why Zina chose to train as a sexuality educator in a region that regards sex as taboo (1:16)How feeling comfortable with our sexuality can increase our confidence (3:52)How Zina starting to educate her girls early about sex in order to give them body autonomy, surprised the school (7:40)Sexual shame is a feeling, not a fact! (13:11)How when women are mostly raised as dutiful caretakers, it becomes hard to be vocal about what they want (15:27)How we can give our kids an age appropriate sex talk (17:05)Deciding on the Values, beliefs and messages you want to pass down to your children instead of passing on generational ideas that have never been questioned (21:20)The danger of kids turning to porn for answers when they don't feel comfortable asking their parents (22:30)Typical gender roles can harm relationships (24:00)Connect with Zina:

So many people feel this way and wish they could develop more confidence to conquer fears that have been holding them back. The good news is that there are ways to develop your speaking/presenting skills and gain more confidence with guidance and practice.
My guest for this episode is communication coach, Jon Torrens. Tue, 08 Feb 2022 - 37min - 29 - Cosmetic confidence
My first guest on season two of Breaking Free is Laura Marshall, an award winning aesthetics director who helps people feel more confident with medical tattooing and cosmetic injectables. We explore whether looking younger or more beautiful on the outside, helps you feel any more confident on the inside. I ask Laura how much is too much and discover some interesting facts about the human nipple !
As most of us usually feel confident in some areas and less so in others, I question with Laura why she feels more comfortable owning her success as a businesswoman but struggles to say the same about herself as a triathlete who participated twice in the 'Ironman' race.

Why Laura feels guilty describing herself as an athlete, alongside her title of entrepreneur and Mum (3.50)Medical tattooing aureolas and the difference between a male and female nipple (11.00)Losing her father to cancer ten years ago was the drive behind why Laura found meaning and purpose in aesthetic beauty therapy (16.00)How cosmetic injectables are even more in demand after lockdown (17.45)Are social media filters creating bigger insecurities in young people? Tue, 25 Jan 2022 - 36min - 28 - Creating confidence and joy
Do you feel pressured to create a whole new YOU and set challenging goals for yourself every new year ? Well I have found that it is much better for our mental health and motivation moving forward, to actually reflect upon the year that has past first. When we look back at the happy moments we had as well as the difficult parts, we can focus on how far we have come and decide better on what will help us moving forward. Big goals can leave you feeling like you have failed, so it is important to set achievable goals that take you closer to where you want to be one small step at a time.
I share what has worked for myself and my clients who I coach on developing more confidence and trust in themselves. Journalling, stillness, trying new things and surrounding yourself with positive people cheering you on are just a few of the tips. I also include four simple questions to ask yourself that will help you feel good about where you are now and motivated to create more of what worked for the year coming :)
In this episode I share :
How focusing on what you are good at, will help you feel more confident (2:00)Confidence is something we can all develop (3:20)Trying new things makes life exciting and will help you believe in yourself more (4:10)An example of my own challenges and fears (6:00)How one brave step leads to another (8:00)Surround yourself with cheerleaders and risk-takers (11:10)The benefits of journalling daily (12:00)Questions to reflect on and write down.
- What were your happiest moments in 2021? (15:00)What did you find challenging in 2021? (17:40)What put you off from doing the things you had planned to achieve? (19:05)What do you feel grateful for? (20:40)

Tue, 11 Jan 2022 - 23min - 27 - A single Mom's perspective
I share an honest and intimate conversation with a group of single Moms who made the decision to leave a partnership or marriage that was no longer making them happy. It is never an easy decision to make, and it still has its many challenges even when it comes with the privilege of financial support or custody of the children. No-one enters a committed relationship and has children with the intention of leaving. So many women fear the consequences of leaving or literally have no choice. So I hope that sharing a few stories of my own and others, can help shine a light on some of the rewards and challenges involved in Breaking Free when a marriage is no longer working.
Topics discussed in this episode:
Lucia raised her son on her own even though she was in a partnership for seventeen years before deciding to separate a few years ago and now shares custody (2:38)Dana divorced during the Covid epidemic after having time alone with her daughters to reflect on her seven year marriage (5:38)Lily explains how she felt like a single mother with an absent husband most of the time, even though he was an engaged father when he was present for short periods (9:50)Are there more fingers pointed at whoever chooses to leave the marriage? (18:50)Feelings of guilt (21:27)Choosing to stay in a marriage and deciding to separate emotionally and living a new dynamic instead (23:15)When staying in a marriage feels unhealthy and not an option or good example for the kids to see (26:18)Lucia is able to discover who she truly is now that she no longer lives with emotional abuse (29:15)How mothers not working in order to raise the kids and run the household, is rarely considered as an equal contribution to husbands earning an income (31:00)Judgement from others who assume things about a couple from what they see (33:50)What message are we sending our children when we stay in an unhappy marriage? (35:00)The vunerability that comes with being free and single again after years of emotional neglect (39:00)The challenges of living a single life within a marriage (41:20)The challenge of finding the balance of raising the children together apart (47:00)\The fear of being replaced by a step-mom (49:00)If roles were reversed and Moms had a new partner or marriage, there would be a risk of losing the kids (52:00)How the loneliness of being in an unhappy marriage or feeling isolated in the family can be harder than the loneliness of being single (53:30)The possible burden children may feel, thinking it is their responsibility to look after their single or unhappy parent (57:05)Let’s connect !

Tue, 16 Nov 2021 - 42min - 23 - Overcoming SHAME
In this episode, I talk about shame. Where it originates from and how to overcome it. Shame keeps us small and gains power when we keep our feelings a secret. Unidentified and unexpressed, shame can lead us to hurting ourselves with perfectionism, addiction, eating disorders or suicide. We also hurt others with bullying, aggression, blaming and sometimes violence.
We aren't born with shame. Society and culture create shame in us as a means of control. We can feel shame about our accent, colour, gender, feeling pleasure, negative feelings, height, weight etc..
I look up and share wikipedia's description of guilt and shame societies. In individuals, guilt is when you feel bad about something but shame is when you inherently feel like a bad person. It is okay to feel sorry for what you have done but not for who you are. Shame doesn't help you move forward as it only leads you into a spiral of hopelessness and self-hatred.
Shame researcher and author Brene Brown explains how empathy and sharing is the antidote to shame. I include her 5 steps towards shame resilience and the 8 types of people to avoid sharing with that do not have the empathy and compassion required as a trusted listener.
Discussed in this episode:
What wikipedia tells us about guilt and shame culture/socities (0:40)
Some of the many things we feel shame about (2:40)
Rejection is a significant threat (3:15)
Individualist and collectivist cultures (4:00)

Tue, 10 Aug 2021 - 23min - 12 - A female perspective
Today's episode of Breaking Free is about what it feels like to be female. What privilege really means and how gender inequality impacts us all.
I include a checklist a poem and a snippet from a book I am enjoying at the moment. I highlight some of the many challenges women face and why there is a need for feminism even though many positive changes in the last 120 years for women.
Today I discuss:
How male privilege hurts men too (2:00)
A male privilege checklist by Maisha Z. Johnson (3:10)
What Caitlin Moran says about feminism in her book 'More than a woman'(11:55)
Patriarchy is the enemy of both men and women (16:00)
Camille Rainville's poem 'Be a Lady they said' (17:00)

Tue, 03 Aug 2021 - 23min - 11 - My father's story- Khaled Kurdi
This episode of Breaking Free is a special one, recorded from my home in Amman-Jordan with my Dad as my guest. My father dreamt of becoming a pilot when he grew up, it seemed like an impossible dream as the fifth child in a big family with very little income or education.
I love how he didn't let this stop him from believing and eventually manifesting his dream. He taught himself English from magazines and dictionaries, studied flight manuals and saved up money working as an electronic technician in the Gulf till he managed to reach a flight school in America. His goals didn't stop there and unexpected surprises from the Universe were around every corner, one of which was a very special meeting with His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan.
Today, we discuss:
The early days growing up with Kurdish/ Circassian parents in Jordan as a middle child of nine siblings (2:00)
Joining the army and training as an electronic technician (6:10)
How his eldest brother sent him to the frontline in Qibya, Palestine as punishment just before the massacre in 1953 by Ariel Sharon (10.44)
A job in Qatar and Kuwait helps him save the money he needs for flight school (16:00)
From Liverpool to New York in nine days by boat and a 6 day trip by bus to L.A.(21:30)
A surprise visit by King Hussein of Jordan (23:00)
Training in France on a jet caravelle and hired as a first officer in Royal Jordanian airlines (26:00)
Trained on the Boeing 707 (28:10)
A move to Iran Air that was cut short by the Islamic Revolution in 1978-79 (28:45)
Tri-star and bigger dreams (30:22)
After retirement (34:22)
What my Father would say to his younger self and younger generations (35:19)
