Despite well-established evidence of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR)effectiveness, inadequate US reimbursement has resulted in challenges that negatively impact PR financial stability, equity and access. 

The road to equitable payment and access to PR is a long and complex journey. All major pulmonary societies are working together to improve equity of PR reimbursement. ATS recently published a PR clinical practice guideline to update the evidence base of PR and further substantiate and define PR’s highly effective impact. As the evidence base of effectiveness improves, we all play a role in understanding and working toward improving patient program access, awareness, and adequate payment.

Dr. Patrick Lyons sits down with Dr. Lekshmi Santhosh, the originator and chair of the ATS ICU-PAUSE program, to discuss this innovative new program.  The ATS ICU-PAUSE program is a communication framework that aims to educate health care providers, including trainees, intensivists, hospitalists, and advanced practice providers around patient safety, diagnostic uncertainty and implicit bias during transitions of care.  Dr. Lyons, an ICU-PAUSE co-investigator and collaborator, discusses the origins of this program with the ATS, some of the pitfalls of the ICU-to-ward transition, and how the ICU-PAUSE checklist has been used to improve communication across many institutions across the country!

How to effectively teach on bedside rounds in the ICU.

The ATS Critical Care Assembly receives hundreds to thousands of fantastic case reports. In recent years, there have been concentrated efforts to improve the quality of these case reports with a standardized grading rubric, and increased recognition of top submissions. The national conference now hosts multiple poster discussion sessions, and an increasing number of traditional poster sessions each year. In this podcast, we highlight two of the very best case reports from the 2023 National Conference. Please remember to submit your case reports for the 2024 conference by 11/1/23. If yours is one of the top case reports selected, you could be on this podcast next year! If you are interested in a pre-submission review, we are offering case report review and editing to try to help those who are interested but may lack local mentorship. We will be prioritizing submissions from candidates who are international, from a community institution, and for whom English is a second language. We hope that this effort will continue to expand the pool of excellent case reports and provide more accessibility for those who traditionally face challenges in getting their work recognized.
