- 116 - Singularity of Sight (Ephesians 4:4-6) – Study 96
We, as the body of Christ, are to have a singular focus on Jesus Christ.
While the modern church is marked by division, denomination, and being divisive, Paul calls the church to guard and protect the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
In this message, Nathan gives an overview of Ephesians 4:4-6 and examines the seven times Paul uses the term “one” in the passage. This message is an important one for our day as Paul calls the church into greater unity, integrity, and living in “one accord.”

Paul exhorts believers in Ephesians 4:2-3 to be marked by love and unity with one another.
If we are called to the high calling of Christ, we must be marked by His love and life—which means the Christian life cannot be lived in a vacuum, rather it must be lived in relationship and community.
In this study, we examine what it means to bear with one another in love and to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Fri, 27 May 2022 - 30min - 106 - Recapping the Outflow of the Inflow (Ephesians 1-3) – Study 86
I recorded this mini-series from Ephesians 4:1-3 in the studio. As such they are a bit shorter and have a slightly different tone than our normal studies.
To lay a foundation for this ten-part mini-series, I gave a recap of the previous study I gave, The Practical Outflow of Our Position in Christ.
As we begin this new mini-series from Ephesians 4 examining God’s call in our lives, we first need to see the connection between chapters 1-3 and chapters 4-6. Without recognizing that the outflow of the Christian life is based upon God’s inflow, we will either live with hypocrisy or passivity. Join me in this overview message looking at the importance of knowing all of Ephesians to properly understand God’s calling in the life of a believer.

Fri, 20 May 2022 - 20min - 105 - The Practical Outflow of Our Position in Christ (Ephesians 4:1) – Study 85
The Christian life is all about our position in Christ.
Yet many Christians will either know their position and not live it out or they try to produce “religious activities” out of their own strength and resource without having the life of Christ within. Both can be dangerous.
In Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, he spends half the letter addressing their position in Christ, and then exhorts them to live it out in the everyday moments of their lives.
Join Nathan in this expositional study as he talks about the practical outflow of our position in Christ as we begin to study the second half of the book.

Too many Christians function with half a Bible – they tend to ignore the Old Testament or see it is antiquated stories that may contain good morals.
But the Old Testament is important for our understanding of the New Testament. Christians are not "New Testament" believers – they are "full Bible" believers!
Yet we must ask ourselves what role of the Old Testament Law has in our lives and what did Jesus do with it?

In this expositional message from Ephesians 2:14-17, Nathan Johnson talks about the effect of Jesus by being our Prince of Peace.

In the Mediterranean port of ancient Joppa, there lived a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity (see Acts 9:36).
Dorcas was a woman known for "good works."
Paul, in Ephesians 2:10, says this is to be the same for every believer – we were created in Christ Jesus for "good works" (because we are His workmanship … His poetry).
The question we must answer is what are these good works and how do we go about doing them?
In this expositional sermon, Nathan examines Ephesians 2:10 and explains that the good works Paul refers to is not about a list of activities or "dos and don'ts" – but rather is the life and love of Christ Himself.

Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 24 Truth is important. In fact, it is the truth that sets us free (see John 8:32). Yet if all we do is hear the truth, we will actually receive no benefit from it. While hearing the truth is indeed important, we must go beyond mere hearing and actually believe it. In Ephesians 1:13, Paul declares that yes, you do need to hear the Word of Truth (which is the Gospel of your salvation), but mere listening won't save you. So while we do need to hear the truth (otherwise how will we know what to believe), let's not presume that just because we have heard the truth, we actually have the truth. Fri, 18 Oct 2019 - 29min - 37 - A Superlative Waterfall of Grace (Ephesians 1:7-8) – Study 16
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 16 Superlatives are my favorite types of words. They spice up a sentence and make things over-the-top and grand. And it seems that Paul the Apostle loved a good superlative as well – for he often used them in reference to the grandeur of Christ or the richness of God's grace. In this expositional study in the book of Ephesians, Nathan Johnson (NRJohnson) examines Ephesians 1:7-8 and looks at the waterfall of grace that God has lavishly poured upon us in all wisdom and insight. May we as Christians live under the downpour of God's grace. Download the shownotes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-016/
Sun, 13 Oct 2019 - 29min - 36 - You Are Forgiven and Redeemed in Christ (Ephesians 1:7-8) – Study 15
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 15 The Bible is clear that we are all sinners and deserve wrath and punishment for our sin. Yet it is also clear that if we, by faith, believe and embrace Jesus Christ as our Savior, we shall experience salvation. In his list of blessings, Paul declares that we have been forgiven and redeemed in Christ. While Christians often throw around this language of forgiveness and redemption, few of us actually know what it means or how to practically experience this reality in our lives. In this expositional study of Ephesians 1:7-8, Nathan Johnson examines this passage and shows how we are blessed because the precious blood of Christ was given for our forgiveness and redemption … and this truth should change every aspect of our lives. Fri, 27 Sep 2019 - 42min - 35 - Experience God's Amazing Grace (Ephesians 1:6) – Study 14
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 14 John Newton's famous hymn "Amazing Grace" captures the essence of grace itself – it truly IS amazing! Similarly, Peter tells us that God's grace is "manifold," meaning it is numerous, has many layers, depths, or "folds." In this expositional study of Ephesians 1:6, Nathan Johnson discusses what grace is, why it is so amazing, and how we can practically live with the focus and reality of God's grace in our lives. Grace is more than pat on the head, a gentle hug, or overlooking our sins – grace is powerful, epic in scope, and the daily need of every Christian to function and live out the Christian life. Come and experience God's amazing grace. Download the shownotes for this episode and get other Christ-centered teaching and resources at: deeperchristian.com/ephesians-study-014/
Sat, 14 Sep 2019 - 46min - 34 - Better Than Broadway (Ephesians 1:6) – Study 13
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 13 I love a good musical and have always (secretly) wanted life to somehow break into song and dance spontaneously. Yet, I've found there is truly something better than a Broadway musical – a Christian's life giving praise and glory to Jesus Christ throughout everything they say, think, and do. In this expositional study, we dive into Ephesians 1:6 where Paul commissions the church to live unto the praise of God's glory! Sat, 07 Sep 2019 - 14min - 33 - God Has Predestined You For Adoption (Ephesians 1:5) – Study 12
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 12 One of the tremendous blessings we have in Christ Jesus is that through Christ, by the pre-determined decision and purpose of God, we have been adopted as children of God. As powerful as an illustration adoption in our modern-day is of what God has done for us, Paul's use of the Roman concept of adoption gives a greater depth and clarity to the robust demonstration of God's adoption of us as His children. In this expositional study, Nathan Johnson examines Ephesians 1:5 and God's determined purpose to predestine us unto adoption as heirs of the King. Sun, 04 Aug 2019 - 34min - 32 - In Love (Ephesians 1:4-5) – Study 11
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 11 Love. Biblically, it's more than an emotion or feeling. Love is a Person (Jesus – see 1 John 4:8, 16) and it's an action (Cross – see Romans 5:8). Between verses four and five of Ephesians 1, Paul inserts the phrase "in love." Scholars argue whether the phrase "in love" goes with the statement made in Ephesians 1:4 ("you were chosen before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him IN LOVE") or whether it refers to God's position in predestining us unto adoption in Ephesians 1:5. In this expositional study in Ephesians, Nathan Johnson discusses this dilemma and gives his conclusion … and in so doing discusses what it means for God to always act from the nature of love and calls us to do the same. Fri, 26 Jul 2019 - 41min - 31 - Holiness Nose-to-Nose (Ephesians 1:4) – Study 10
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 10 Paul tells us in Ephesians 1:4 that we have been chosen before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless BEFORE HIM. Interestingly, this statement "before Him" not only reveals our sinful condition but also gives the solution – that the only way we can live holy, blameless lives is to get nose-to-nose with God Himself … for it is in embracing the Holy One that we find ourselves holy. This is not a call to legalism or to certain activities as much as it is to become different – to have a different nature – which will change everything in our lives. Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 09 God has chosen us before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him. Yet too many of us don't understand what it means to be holy and blameless. In this expositional study of Ephesians 1:4, Nathan Johnson examines these two concepts and discusses three aspects of what it means to be made holy and blameless IN Christ Jesus. Fri, 12 Jul 2019 - 36min - 29 - You Are Chosen! (Ephesians 1:4) – Study 08
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 08 We can easily think of being chosen as the last pick in a game for kids – we line up against the wall, hoping that we won't be the last pick. But Paul tells us that God has chosen us for Himself even before the foundation of the world. In other words, you were not his last pick, but rather the thought upon His mind, even before He spoke: "let there be light." This choosing is both personal and with a divine purpose – to become like the One who chose us. In this expositional study of Ephesians, Nathan Johnson investigates Ephesians 1:4 and the implications of being chosen by God. Sat, 06 Jul 2019 - 29min - 28 - What Are You Into? (Ephesians 1:3) – Study 07
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 07 The concept of being "In Christ" is a foundational statement throughout all of Scripture, especially Paul's letter to the Ephesians – in fact, the entire book revolves around understanding your position IN Christ. In this expositional study of Ephesians 1:3, we examine the phrase "in Christ" found throughout Paul's letters and discuss three aspects of being in Christ that are foundational for the life of a Christian. Fri, 21 Jun 2019 - 37min - 27 - Live from a New Perspective (Ephesians 1:3) – Study 06
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 06 As Christians, we have dual citizenship – we live physically on this earth, but we also dwell in Christ (spiritually) in the heavenly realms. While both realities are indeed real, we are called to live with a heavenly or spiritual perspective while on this earth. In this expositional study of Ephesians 1:3, Nathan examines the concept of "heavenly realms," found five times throughout the book of Ephesians and exhorts us to live with a new perspective despite any circumstance, difficulty, trial, or struggle we may face in the physical. Fri, 14 Jun 2019 - 42min - 26 - You Are Blessed (Ephesians 1:3) – Study 05
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 05 God is blessed … and from that state of blessing, He blesses us. As Paul talks about this incredible reality in Ephesians 1:3, he reminds us that every single blessing God has for us is found in one single place … and that by blessing us, God in turns receives our praise, worship, thanksgiving, and adoration (in short, we declare the greatness of Who He is – "blessing"). In this lesson, Nathan Johnson expounds upon Ephesians 1:3 looking at the three blessing words used in the verse and how we, as Christians, are to live in the blessing of God – you are blessed! Fri, 07 Jun 2019 - 37min - 25 - Introducing Grace and Peace (Ephesians 1:2) – Study 04
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 04 Walk into nearly any church and it won't take long before you hear the words "grace" and "peace" being thrown around – yet most of us don't understand the depths of those two words are. In Paul's salutation and introduction in Ephesians, he uses the common greeting of his day ("grace" to the Greeks and Romans, and "peace" for the Jews) but packs this phrase with spiritual depth, describing his desire for the Christians in Asia Minor … that they would experience the fullness of God's grace and as a result, His peace in their lives. In this expositional Bible study of Ephesians 1:1-2, we examine Paul's greeting and his passionate desire that we live with Christ as the center and fullness of our lives. Fri, 31 May 2019 - 35min - 24 - Introductions (Ephesians 1:1) – Study 03
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 03 Though it may sound like a simple introduction, Paul's prologue (or could be called the introduction or salutation) found in Ephesians 1:1-2, sets the foundation for the entire book of Ephesians. Paul declares that he is an apostle of Jesus Christ by God's will and that he is writing to the saints (the holy set-apart ones who have the life of Christ within) and believers in Ephesus. In this expositional Bible study, we examine the keywords of this passage and show how Paul argues that our entire lives should be wrapped up and defined by Jesus Christ. Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 02 We are beginning our expositional study in the book of Ephesians. Fri, 17 May 2019 - 38min - 22 - Experiencing Heart Burn – Study 01
Deeper Christian Bible Study in Ephesians • Study 01 Even before we start the relaunch of our expositional Bible study series in the book of Ephesians, we need to lay the groundwork for Bible study and the necessity of having "heart burn" through the Word of God. On the road to Emmaus, after talking with Jesus, the two disciples looked at each other and proclaimed: "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" There is something powerful when you allow God to reveal truth to you through His Word. We are told that the Word of God is living and active, and when we study it, it is not like studying Shakespeare but rather spending time with the Author Himself. Every Christian should seek to experience "heart burn" as we spend time in the Bible.
