Also on the pod, the hottest take from Phil Bonney, Klopp becomes a sell-out, and which side decided to send in the clowns (I think) with their celebration.
This episode is dedicated to the people of Valencia following devastating flooding in the area.

ST PAULI HAVE WON A GAME!!!
As well as that, plenty of less important stuff is covered in the 99th episode of Going Deutsch: Werder come back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 against ten-man Hoffenheim, Bayern and Leverkusen draw 1-1 in the battle of the contenders, and Stuttgart draw 2-2 with Wolfsburg despite an horrific refereeing mistake. In the Zweite, Köln blow a 3-0 lead in a 4-4 draw with Karlsruher, Elversberg put four past Hertha Berlin whilst not conceding the same amount, and there is little defending on display in the rest of the games across the second tier. On this week's episode of Going Deutsch: the first round of the DFB Pokal sees Bundesliga side Bochum go out at the hands of Jahn Regensburg, fourth tier Kickers Offenbach defeat Magdeburg, and Dynamo Dresden go through against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Many Bundesliga sides get close to losing their spot in the competition: Hoffenheim, St. Pauli, and Mainz all require extra time, whilst Bayern, Dortmund, and Freiburg pummel their opponents in the managerial debuts of Kompany, Sahin, and Schuster. Also on the pod: a redacted stadium name, Alex's belief in nominative determinism, the St. Pauli connection, and literally the most baffling story you will ever hear in your life.

NOTE: Maxi Beier's move to Borussia Dortmund was made official after the recording of this podcast. Also want to note that Tom Rothe's transfer to Union Berlin does indeed have a buyback clause.
In the second episode of the new season: a controversial red card doesn't take away from Miroslav Klose's first win as Nürnberg beat Schalke, Kaiserslautern come from 2-0 down to draw with Fürth, whilst Elversberg get a shock draw with Köln. In the third tier, Dresden also come from 2-0 down to win a fascinating Ost-Derby against Energie Cottbus, three other sides hold 100% records, whilst Osnabrück continue to be stuck at the wrong end of a table. Austria become one of Woodward's favourite sides as they beat Poland 3-1, Georgia miss a massive chance to win their first game at an international tournament, and Türkiye score the funniest own goal of all time against Portugal. France and England have disappointing performances despite winning, and Türkiye and Georgia put on a show in a 3-1 Turkish win. Also on the pod: Towells says he loves a big coq, Tant-Brown complains about late stage capitalism, the worst kits at the tournament, some fans of referees, and the continent descends into a food war.

Alex rounds up the 2023/24 season on Going Deutsch with a review of the 2. Bundesliga. St. Pauli win the league but have plenty of worries going into the top flight, Kiel make their first trip to the first tier after finishing second, whilst Düsseldorf miss out after blowing a 3-0 lead in the play-offs. At the wrong end of the table, Osnabrück and Wehen are relegated at the first attempt, the latter through a controversial second leg in the play-offs, whilst Hansa return to the third tier in a moment that Alex was clearly saddened by. Bundesliga at the expense of Jahn Regensburg in a controversial 2-1 defeat. Meanwhile, the 3. Mon, 27 May 2024 - 1h 17min - 141 - Invincible
Following a great last day of the season: Bayer Leverkusen beat Augsburg 2-1 to become the first Bundesliga side to go invincible, Union Berlin leave it late to stay up against Freiburg whilst Bochum slip into the relegation play-off and Köln go straight down to the second tier. Speaking of, St. Pauli win the 2. Bundesliga after beating Wehen on the last day, Wiesbaden however remain in the relegation play-off spot as Hansa Rostock are relegated thanks to a defeat against Paderborn where the fans once again destroyed their own image as well as their stadium this time. Also on the pod, Dortmund says goodbye to Reus, Bayern say goodbye to the chances of hiring a good manager, the German Football YouTube channel makes another mistake as there's another back-to-back promotion in the 3. Liga, more from the Regionalliga, and Alex tries to convince you to watch a whole day of sides you've never heard of fighting for trophies you've also never heard of (trust me, it's great).

On a very celebratory episode of Going Deutsch: Bayer Leverkusen get one step closer to invincibility as they beat Bochum 5-0 in their 50th undefeated game, Köln come from 2-0 down to beat Union 3-2, whilst Mainz leapfrog the side from the captial with a completely non-controversial 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund. In the Zweite, Holstein Kiel celebrate their first ever promotion to the Bundesliga whilst St. Pauli mark their first return to the top-flight since 2011 (see if you can guess if Alex is happy about that), Braunschweig secure safety with a win against Wehen whilst the midweek game saw Osnabrück get relegated. Also on the pod: a slapstick goal in the Dritte, more from Europe's semi-finals and the equally important Regionalliga, why someone cut out a sponsor, a gift basket for a legend, and more lovely stories about 777 Partners.

Bayer Leverkusen return to the top of the Bundesliga following their win against Mainz and Bayern dropping points in a 2-2 draw with Leipzig. Union Berlin continue their fall with a 1-0 defeat away at Heidenheim and Darmstadt pick up their first win with a 4-2 victory over Werder Bremen. In the 2. Bundesliga, St. Pauli go top of the league after a win at the Olympiastadion against Hertha, whilst Fortuna Düsseldorf lose against HSV and a Lennart Grill masterclass is only enough to get Osnabrück a point against Kaiserslautern. Also on the pod, which DFB Pokal fixture everyone in the ARD studio was excited for, a surprise departure in the Bundesliga, and which Zweite manager was the first to be sacked this season.

A lot has happened in German football over the last week: Germany find their man as Julian Nagelsmann becomes manager of the national team, Serhou Guirassy becomes the best player in the world as he inspires Stuttgart to a win over Darmstadt, Bayern put seven past Bochum for the third year in a row, and Union Berlin find themselves in crisis following a 2-0 loss to Hoffenheim. In the second tier, Timo Baumgartl is too honest following Schalke's 3-1 loss to St. Pauli, HSV lose to another newly promoted side in Osnabrück, and Greuther Fürth celebrate their 120th birthday with a 4-3 thriller against Karlsruher. Also on the pod: the first group stage fixtures in Europe, the grand final of Kit Clash 2023/24, and the bartender in the basement in Köln.

Alex returns for another bonus podcast about another firing, this time it's the turn of Hansi Flick, whose catastrophic reign of the German national team came to an end after just 25 games following a 4-1 loss to Japan. Questions include whether it was the right call (it was), and who should replace him (not Matthias Sammer). Also on the pod, a legend says goodbye to an old stand, a bunker appears in a new EA game, and the fact that Germany is now a basketball nation following their World Cup win.

In the Zweite: St. Pauli finally score a football goal after 378 minutes but still draw their fourth game in a row, Magdeburg beat Hertha in a foul goal thriller, and Nürnberg refuse to put a keeper in goals as they lose 3-1 to Kaiserslautern. Also on the pod: Dortmund don't have a repeat against Werder, Koln and Mainz were special kits, and why Bayern didn't help celebrate the pod's birthday (rude).

Liga: Bayern draw against twice against Leipzig and Köln whilst the rest of the league goes crazy, Wolfsburg score 11 against Freiburg and Hertha, Köln beat Werder 7-1, Dortmund have two last gasp winners, and everyone forgets how to defend. On the final Going Deutsch of 2022: Borussia Dortmund continue to slide with no defending in their 4-2 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Freiburg surprise again by beating Union Berlin 4-1, and Bayer and Bochum both continue their revivals with wins over Stuttgart and Augsburg respectively. Lower down, there are 23 goals in the three Saturday afternoon games in the 2. Bundesliga: as Heidenheim beat Jahn Regensburg 5-4, Hamburger beat Sandhausen 4-2, and Karlsruher and St. Pauli draw 4-4. Also on the pod: the worst miss of the Bundesliga season so far, the worst backpass of the 2. Bundesliga season, and Nürnberg's special kit against Paderborn.
With more negative stories by the day, Going Deutsch would like to once again urge fans to boycott the Qatar World Cup, which will be looked back on in history as one of the biggest disgraces in the sport's history. The Frauen Bundesliga and lower league football from around the world (as well as literally anything else) are much better options for you to watch.
