Fréderic Chopin composed his Waltz in E flat major, Op. 18 (also known as Grande Valse Brillante) in 1833. It was published the following year, being his first published waltz solo piano (although he had previously written a number of waltzes that were either destroyed or published posthumously). The title 'Grande Valse Brillante' was also given by Chopin to his Waltzes Op. 34, though in practice it is usually used in reference to Op. 18. Many composers, including Stravinsky and Britten, have created orchestrations of this piece

Frédéric Chopin composed his Waltz in A flat major, Op. 42, in 1840. It is a single piece movement, with a performance time of around 4 minutes. Though none of Chopin's polonaises, waltzes, or dances in general were intended to be actually danced, this waltz has been considered appropriate for use in the ballroom.

Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39 is a set of waltzes for piano four hands, written by Johannes Brahms. They were composed in 1865, and published two years later, dedicated to Eduard Hanslick. These waltzes were also arranged for piano solo by the composer, in two different versions – difficult and simplified. The three versions were published at the same time, and sold well, contrary to the composer's expectations. In the solo versions, some of the keys were altered from the original duet version (the last four in the difficult version and no. 6 in the easy version).

Antonín Dvořák wrote his eight Waltzes for piano solo, Op. 54 (also catalogued as B. 101) between the years 1879 and 1880. They were published in 1880. During this time, the composer also arranged the numbers 1 to 4 for string orchestra (or, alternatively, 2 violins, viola, cello, and double basses ad lib.). They were first performed in 1880 in this form, and published only in 1911. The original set of eight pieces lasts around 25 minutes.

This piece in F sharp minor was originally composed by Charles Mayer, and titled 'Le Regret, Op. 332'. For many years it was incorrectly attributed to Chopin under the title 'Valse mélancolique in F-sharp minor' A1/7. It was re-published around 1930 and later in 1986. In 2012 it was discovered, through the Berlin Staatsbibliothek, that the piece had been indeed composed by Charles Mayer in 1861 (or before) in a more elaborated form, and that the 'Chopin' version is lacking a significant amount of music. 출처 : https://musopen.org/music/1970/frederic-chopin/valse-melancolique-le-regret-op-332/

Frühlingsstimmen (Voices of Spring), Op. 410, is a waltz by Johann Strauss II, written in 1882 for orchestra and solo soprano and dedicated to Alfred Grünfeld. The waltz was not a great success at its premiere, but was more successful when performed on Strauss' tour of Russia in 1886. A piano arrangement by the composer contributed much to its success beyond Vienna. The piece is sometimes used as an insertion aria in the act 2 ball scene of Strauss' operetta Die Fledermaus. 출처 : https://musopen.org/music/2171/johann-strauss-jr/fruhlingsstimme-op-410/

Fréderic Chopin wrote his Tarantelle for piano solo, Op. 43, in 1841. It was published that same year. The piece is in the key of A flat major, marked Presto, and is considered to be technically demanding. It was inspired by Gioachino Rossini's 'La Danza', also written in the tarantella's characteristic 6/8 rhythm. The work seemed to be a fruit of Chopin's experimentation: Schumman praised it while describing it as 'extravagant', and there is no evidence of it being dedicated to or commissioned by anyone. Even though Chopin was very critical of it, it became a recording favourite in the 20th century.

Niccoló Paganini wrote his 24 Caprices for solo violin between 1802 and 1817. The work resembles an etude collection, with each individual piece exploring a particular skill. They were first published in 1820, dedicated as a set to 'all artists' (each individual number had a dedicatee, though). In subsequent years, famous composers arranged the caprices for other instruments, and wrote accompaniments (such as Robert Schumman). Nowadays the Caprices are one of Paganini's best known compositions, and are widely played as pieces for technical display.

The Symphony No. 9, Op. 125 (sometimes known simply as "the Choral"), is the final complete symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, the symphony is one of the best-known works of the Western repertoire. Almost universally considered to be among Beethoven's greatest works, it was one of the first examples of a composer using voices in a symphony. The words, sung during the final movement by vocal soloists and a chorus, were taken from the Ode to Joy by Friedrich Schiller, with additions made by the composer. It stands as one of the most played symphonies in the world. In 2002, Beethoven's autograph score, held by the Berlin State Library, was added to the United Nations World Heritage List, becoming the first musical score to be so honoured. 출처 : http://www.kkacl.com/mdp/7803

The Sonata no. 14, Op. 27, no. 2, was completed in 1801 and dedicated to 17-year-old Countess Guicciardi, with whom Beethoven was, or had been in love. The nickname Moonlight derives from an 1832 description of the first movement by poet Ludwig Rellstab, who compared it to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. Beethoven included the phrase Quasi una fantasia in the title (as well as in the other sonata of Op. 27) partly because the work does not follow the traditional sonata pattern where the first movement is in regular sonata form, and where the three or four movements are arranged in a fast-slow-[fast]-fast sequence. https://musopen.org/music/816/ludwig-van-beethoven/piano-sonata-no-14-in-cm-moonlight-op-27-no-2/

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, op. 13 commonly known as Pathétique (although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named by the publisher, to Beethoven's liking) was published in 1799, though written the year before. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. It is perhaps the earliest of Beethoven's compositions to achieve widespread and enduring popularity. It is widely represented on concert programs and recordings, and it has been incorporated into several works of popular culture. In its entirety, encompassing all three movements, the work takes approximately 19 minutes to perform. 출처 : https://musopen.org/music/778/ludwig-van-beethoven/piano-sonata-no-8-in-c-minor-pathetique-op-13/

Franz Schubert composed 'The Shepherd on the Rock' (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen), D. 965, in 1828, during the final months of his life. It is a song for soprano, clarinet, and piano, conceived as a late response to a request from her friend, soprano Pauline Anna Milder-Hauptmann, who had requested a showpiece that would allow her to express a wide variety of feelings. She sang it for the first time at the House of the Blackheads in Riga on 10 February 1830. Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331 (300i), is a piano sonata in three movements. It is uncertain where and when Mozart composed the sonata; however, Vienna or Salzburg around 1783 is currently thought to be most likely. A typical performance of this entire sonata takes about 20 minutes. The last movement of Sonata K. 331 by W.A. Mozart, alla turca, popularly known as the Turkish March, is often heard on its own and is one of Mozart's best known piano pieces: Mozart himself titled the movement Alla Turca. It imitates the sound of Turkish Janissary bands, the music of which was much in vogue at that time. Various other works of the time imitate this Turkish style, including Mozart's own opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail. In Mozart's time, the last movement was sometimes performed on pianos built with a "Turkish stop", allowing it to be embellished with extra percussion effects.

Don Giovanni, K. 527 (Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni, literally The Rake Punished, or Don Giovanni) is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. A work based on the legends of Don Juan, fictional libertine and seducer, it was premiered in 1787. Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements. A staple of the standard operatic repertoire, Don Giovanni is one of the most-performed operas worldwide. It has also proved a fruitful subject for writers and philosophers. 출처 : http://www.kkacl.com/mdp/6772

The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte, K. 620) is an opera in two acts by Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is a Singspiel, a popular form that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work premiered in 1791, and it marked the culmination of a period of involvement by Mozart with Schikaneder's theatrical troupe. He had previously contributed to their work in the collaboratively-written Der Stein der Weisen (The Philosopher's Stone). Mozart wrote The Magic Flute keeping in mind the skills of the singers intended for the premiere, which included both virtuosi and ordinary comic actors. The work is noted for its prominent Masonic elements: as Schikaneder, Mozart, and Alberti (the engraver) were lodge brothers. The story portrays the education of mankind, progressing from chaos through religious superstition to rationalistic enlightenment, by means of trial and error, ultimately to make "the Earth a heavenly kingdom, and mortals like the gods". 출처 : http://www.kkacl.com/mdp/19531

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Symphony no. 41 in C major, K. 551,also called Jupiter, in 1788. The last of Mozart symphonies, and also the longest, it was also the last of a series of three symphonies that he had written in quick succession. The outstanding feature of this symphony is its five part fugato section at the very end of the last movement, which was probably inspired by Michael Haydn's Symphony no. 28. One of the themes used in this fugato section is a plainchant motiv traced back to Josquin des Prez. The symphony is orchestrated for flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in C, two trumpets in C, timpani in C and G, and strings. It is not clear if it was ever performed during Mozart's lifetime. 출처 : http://www.kkacl.com/mdp/8760

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, in 1791. It was written for clarinetist Anton Stadler, and it was among the latest works Mozart completed, and his final purely instrumental work (he died in the December following its completion). The concerto is notable for its delicate interplay between soloist and orchestra, and for the lack of overly extroverted display on the part of the soloist. As no autograph survives and as it was published posthumously, it is difficult to understand all of Mozart's intentions: the only relic of this concerto written in Mozart's hand is an excerpt of an earlier rendition written for basset horn in G. Most likely Mozart originally intended the piece to be written for basset horn, but eventually was convinced the piece would be more effective for clarinet. However, since several notes throughout the piece go beyond the conventional range of the A clarinet, we can presume it was intended to be played on the basset clarinet, a special clarinet championed by Stadler that had a range down to low written C. Even in Mozart's day, the basset clarinet was a rare, custom made instrument, so when the piece was published, a new version was arranged with the low notes transposed to regular range. This has proven a problematic decision, as the autograph is lost, having been pawned by Stadler, and until the mid 20th century musicologists did not know that the only version of the concerto written by Mozart's hand had not been heard since Stadler's lifetime. The concerto was premiered in Prague in 1791 to a positive reception. The work calls for a solo clarinet in A, flute I/II, bassoon I/II, horn I/II (in A and D, often transcribed for horn in F), violin I/II, viola, cello, and double bass. 출처 : https://musopen.org/music/2354/wolfgang-amadeus-mozart/clarinet-concerto-in-a-major-k-622/

Composed in 1778, the Symphony no. 40, KV. 550, is sometimes referred to as the "Great G minor symphony," to distinguish it from Symphony no. 25, the two being the only extant minor key symphonies Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ever wrote. Scholars have often suggested that Mozart never heard his 40th symphony performed, some going as far as suggesting that the work was written for posterity. However, a recently discovered letter supplies evidence for at least one performance of the work with Mozart present. Most important is the fact that Mozart revised his symphony to include clarinets, a trouble he would have hardly gone through had he not had a specific performance in view. The symphony calls (in its revised version) for flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, and strings. Notably missing are trumpets and timpani. The first theme is well known, and it also appears in the first movement of his Piano concerto no. 21. Robert Schumann regarded the work as possessing "Grecian lightness and grace". Almost certainly, the most common perception today is that the symphony is tragic in tone and intensely emotional. 출처 : https://musopen.org/music/1577/wolfgang-amadeus-mozart/symphony-no-40-in-g-minor-k-550/

The Serenade no. 13, K. 525, is a 1787 composition for chamber ensemble by W.A. Mozart. The title means 'a little serenade', though it is often rendered more literally but less accurately as A little night music (which has become a common nickname for the piece). There are no records of its first performance, but it is suggested that -as with his other serenades- Mozart wrote it on comission. The traditionally used name of the work comes from the entry Mozart made for it in his personal catalog, which begins, "Eine kleine Nacht-Musik." It has been pointed out that Mozart was not giving the piece a special title, but only entering in his records that he had completed a little serenade. The work is written for an ensemble of two violins, viola, and cello with optional double bass, but is often performed by string orchestras. In the catalog entry mentioned above, Mozart listed the work as having five movements The second movement in his listing, a minuet and trio, was long thought lost and no one knows if it was Mozart or someone else who removed it. 음원 출처 : http://www.kkacl.com/mdp/15047

출처 : https://musopen.org/music/1059/georges-bizet/carmen/ Carmen is an opera comique in four acts, written by French composer Georges Bizet, and premiered in 1875. The libretto, written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy, is based on a nouvelle of the same name by Prosper Merimé. It tells the story of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery Gypsy, Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen's love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The opera was controversial and, although it did not enjoy much success in its first runs, it eventually achieved a repertoire status, with some of its arias being among the best known opera fragments. The music and the story were adapted into countless versions, though Bizet died before the work acquired celebrity.

The piece was conceived for piano, and the popular orchestral arrangement (transposed to the key of D) was not published until a year later. This piece is another example of the attraction that the French composers felt towards Spanish-like pieces during the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

18. Many composers, including Stravinsky and Britten, have created orchestrations of this piece. Reference : https://musopen.org/music/3018/frederic-chopin/grande-valse-brillante-in-e-flat-major-op-18/

Maurice Ravel wrote his Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major, in 1929, at the same time he worked on his Piano Concerto in G major. The Concerto for the Left Hand was commissioned by Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm during World War I. It was premired in 1932 by Wittgenstein himself, toghether with Robert Heger and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Before writing this piece, Ravel studied carefully the Studies for the Left Hand by Camille Saint-Saens. The result of his studies was this single movement piece (though Ravel himself has been quoted as saying the piece is bipartite or tripartite). The Concerto for the Left Hand features a definite rhythmic ambiguity throughout. It is scored for piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, piccolo clarinet (in E flat), 2 clarinets (in A), bass clarinet (in A), 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, triangle, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, wood block, tam-tam, harp, strings, and solo piano.

Frédéric Chopin wrote his Waltz for piano in A minor sometime between 1843 and 1848. It was published over 100 years later, in 1955, thus lacking an opus number. Because of this, it is often designated by its Brown catalogue number, B. 150. It is a piece with a strong folkloric component, both in the harmonic progression and the form. Marked Alegretto, it is 56 bars long, and it takes around two minutes to be performed. Reference : https://musopen.org/music/2617/frederic-chopin/waltz-in-am-b-150/

Claude Debussy finished his suite 'Pour le Piano', L. 95 in 1901. It was pubished that same year, with the premiere taking place in 1902. The suite consists of three movements: Prelude, Sarabande, and Toccata. The prelude was dedicated to Mlle. Worms de Romilly, who commented on its explicit evokation of Javanese music. The sarabande was initially conceived as part of the 'Images Oubliees', and as such, was dedicated to Yvonne Lerolle. This piece was later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. The toccata was dedicated to Nicolas Coronio, a student of Debussy. Pour le piano - I. Prélude Saša Gerželj-Donaldson Pour le piano - II. Sarabande Saša Gerželj-Donaldson Pour le piano - III. Frédéric Chopin wrote his Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 65 in 1846. It was premiered to years later by dedicatee Auguste Franchomme and Chopin himself, and it became the last of Chopin's works to be published during his lifetime. It is also one of the very few works by Chopin featuring any other instrument besides the piano (which is present in all of his works). The sonata is in four movements, lasts about 30 minutes, and is remarkable for the thematic connection between movements. The Cello Sonata is a late work by the French composer Claude Debussy. It was the first of a planned series of 'Six sonates pour divers instruments', however Debussy only completed two others, the sonata for violin and the sonata for flute, viola and harp. The sonata for cello and piano was written in 1915, and is notable for its brevity, most performances not exceeding 11 minutes. It is a staple of the modern cello repertoire and is commonly regarded as one of the finest masterpieces written for the instrument. The two final movements are joined by an attacca. Instead of sonata form, Debussy structures the piece in the style of the eighteenth-century monothematic sonata, and was particularly influenced by the music of François Couperin. The piece makes use of modes and whole-tone and pentatonic scales, as is typical of Debussy's style. It also utilises many types of extended cello technique, including left-hand pizzicato, spiccato and flautando bowing, false harmonics and portamenti. Not surprisingly, the piece is considered technically demanding.

Carl María von Weber wrote his Clarinet Concertino in E flat major, Op. 26 (also catalogued as J. 109) in 1811. It was first premiered two years later, in 1813. Consisting of a single movement with three different moments (Adagio ma non troppo, andante, allegro), a standard rendition lasts around 10 minutes. The score calls for 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns in C, 2 horns in E flat, solo clarinet, timpani, and strings.

Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his Piano Concerto no. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 in 1909. It is considered a very demanding piece, which inspires respect between piano virtuosos (the dedicatee, Josef Hofmann, never played it, and pianist Gary Graffman was quoted saying that he should have learned it while he was young and didn't know what fear was). It was premiered in 1909 by Rachmaninoff himself as the soloist with the New York Symphony Society conducted by Walter Damrosch. It was later performed with Mahler as a conductor, a experience that apparently touched Rachmaninoff. The piece became widely popular in the 1930's thanks to Vladimir Horowitz. It is structured in three movements: even though Rachmaninoff authorized several cuts to be made at the performer discretion (in an attempt to make the work more appealing to audiences) nowadays it is usually performed in its original version, which lasts around 40 minutes.

Franz Schubert wrote his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 677, popularly known as The Trout, in 1819, when he was only 22 years old. Like a good fraction of his works, however, it was published after his death, in 1829. Schubert didn't employ the traditional quintet lineup (piano + string quartet), opting instead for replacing one violin with a double bass. The composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel had rearranged his own Septet for the same instrumentation, and the Trout was actually written for a group of musicians coming together to play Hummel's work. The nickname of the piece stems from the fourth movement, which is a set of variations on a lied by Schubert himself, named Die Forelle (the trout). Apparently the patron who commissioned the piece suggested that Schubert includ said set of variations.
