It's not always easy to find locally grown or raised food items in Alaska, but you might be surprised at what is out there. Kyla Byers is a founder and owner of Arctic Harvest Deliveries. The company specializes in supplying produce, meat, eggs and artisan grocery products from local, Alaskan farmers and food entrepreneurs around the state. Byers tells us how the business got started, about supplying home cooks and professional chefs alike and what we can do to ensure our state’s food security. Later in the show Sherry gives cooking tips on how to prepare some of these local ingredients.

Alaska’s Latino community has roots stretching back long before statehood. In fact, according to Gabriela Olmos Rosas, a doctoral student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Alaska’s Latino roots can be traced back to Ketchikan in the 1910s.
“Alaska was having an attractive economy back then based on gold, and later on oil,” explains Rosas. “[Alaska] had a male workforce for a long time and there are many immigration documents for men. Not long ago, I found an immigration document for a woman dating back to 1945, and I think it's remarkable to start seeing women's presence in early Alaska.”
Rosas’ passion for telling the story of Alaska’s rich Latino history led her to partner with Itzel Zagal, Alaskan nonprofit Enlaces and the Anchorage Museum to curate the exhibit Nuestra Huella, or “Our Footprint” in English.
The exhibit features photographs, community stories, historical research, artworks and cultural belongings from museum collections.
“I feel like as Latinos, we have often felt unseen. We have often felt invisible. Our stories have been told from a third a third a person perspective,” says Rosas.
For Rosas and Zagal, the exhibit is a celebration of Alaska's Latinx history and culture told by the people who lived it.
“[Nuestra Huella] brought a sense of recognition that I think our community deserves and was needing. And that should not stop here. I feel like the recognition of all the communities in Alaska is an ongoing process. I mean, we Latinos and all different communities need to keep opening spaces for our stories to be heard,” says Rosa.
Nuestra Huella will be on display at the Anchorage Museum through April 13, 2025.

Starting a thriving small business is daunting on even the best days. But what happens when you want to start a small business in an often stigmatized Anchorage neighborhood like Fairview, Spenard, Muldoon and Mountain View?
According to the Anchorage Community Land Trust (ACLT) and its partners like the Cook Inlet Lending Center and the Cook Inlet Tribal Council, the path forward to revitalizing these neighborhoods is business creation, local job growth and resident leadership through innovative programs like the Set Up Shop.
"When you believe deeply in the potential of every single person in a neighborhood, regardless of their skin color, or their economic attainment, or their credentials, and you believe that they all can contribute in some way, I think really incredible and powerful things can happen," said ACLT CEO Kirk Rose of the Set Up Shop program.
So far, the program, which offers microloans and business training, has served nearly 400 small businesses and provided over 3,000 hours of direct support to entrepreneurs. In 2013, ACLT won the National Development Council’s Most Innovative Community Development Project Award, and in 2016 the nonprofit won the Alaska Planning Association’s Grassroots Planning Award.

This week Hometown Alaska hosts three writers telling significant parts of Alaska’s story.
The idea for our show began with the hope of bringing Alaska’s current writer laureate, Heather Lende, to the mic, and picking her brain for what we should be reading this winter. We called, she agreed, but we have ended up with so much more.
Since Heather took the state writer mantle for 2021-23, she has made her mission to bring forward other voices from Alaska. When I called to invite her to Hometown Alaska, all we talked about were other writers she wanted to share.
We have two such voices with us today: journalist and writer Laureli Ivanoff of Unalakleet – whose essays and reflections have appeared in The New York Times, High Country News, Alaska Dispatch and elsewhere; and Leigh Newman of Connecticut, author of a memoir about growing up in Alaska, and her new book, a short story collection called “No One Gets Out Alive,” about women navigating male-dominated Alaska.

Today’s Hometown Alaska introduces the Anchorage Log Cabin Quilters Guild. Their unjuried annual Great Alaska Quilt Show is Sept. 17-18. With something like 100 quilts on display, and another 50 small quilts up for auction, you can get a good idea of what this group does. The annual fundraising event is free to attend and has moved from the old Conoco Phillips building to a new location, First United Methodist Church at 725 W 9th Avenue. Parking is also free.
