Sophie's research focuses on galaxy growth in the early Universe and Emma focuses in her research on the formation of the Milky Way. The Institute is named after J.C. Kapteyn, the first professor of Astronomy and Theoretical Mechanics at the University of Groningen. She’s a Professor of Materials Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Engineering and part of the BatteryNL consortium, which received a large NWA grant earlier this year. He is using his SlimStampen adaptive learning tool to help refugees learn the language of the country they’re currently staying in.

Today, October 5th, it’s exactly 5 years since professor Ben Feringa won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. A very special moment for him personally, his research group and everybody at our University. In this episode Arjen, Tina and Wim discuss with Ben Feringa what winning the Nobel Prize meant for him and his group, how his research has developed since and what projects they're currently working on.

Tina en Arjen spreken in deze thema-aflevering met Marian Joëls (decaan Faculteit Medische Wetenschappen), Janka Stoker (hoogleraar Leiderschap en Organisatieverandering) en Anne-Men Huijzer (PhD student Applied Mathematics) over wat Aletta Jacobs heeft betekend voor de positie van vrouwen in de wetenschap en vrouwen in het algemeen en hoe deze situatie nu in Nederland is.

Dr. Laura Govers is te gast in deze aflevering van In de Wetenschap, gemaakt in samenwerking met de Klimaatadaptatieweek Groningen. Laura is mariene ecoloog en Wim, Tina en Arjen spreken met haar over haar succesvolle onderzoek naar zeegrasherstel in de Waddenzee. Op de zandplaat Griend is het haar gelukt om via een speciale kitspuitmethode zeegras te zaaien en te laten groeien. Dit heeft positieve gevolgen voor de biodiversiteit en het klimaat! Daarnaast praat Arjen ons bij over de Klimaatadaptatieweek Groningen van 19 t/m 25 januari 2021.

Maritiem archeoloog dr. Yftinus van Popta is te gast. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op de geschiedenis van de Noordoostpolder. Wim, Arjen en Tina spreken met hem over o.a. de verdronken dorpen Marcnesse, Nagele, Fenehuysen I en Fenehuysen II en het gevonden scheepwrak van de Queen Anne.

Onze gast is hoogleraar Psychosomatiek Judith Rosmalen. Met haar hebben we het over Somatisch Onvoldoende verklaarde Lichamelijke Klachten (SOLK). We bespreken wat het inhoudt, wat de gevolgen zijn en het onderzoek dat zij hier naar doet. Deze aflevering is de opname van onze liveuitzending op het Podcastfestival in september.

Deze aflevering is te gast: Sander de Hosson, longarts in het Wilhelmina Ziekenhuis in Assen en RUG Alumnus van het Jaar 2019. Een prijs die hij ontvangt voor de wijze waarop hij aandacht vraagt voor de emotionele kant van de palliatieve zorg en voor het onder medisch personeel bespreekbaar maken van de dood, te beginnen tijdens hun opleiding.

Te gast is prof. dr. Louwrens Hacquebord. Veertig jaar geleden organiseerde hij met het Arctisch Centrum van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen de eerste archeologische expeditie van de RUG naar Spitsbergen. Nu opent 7 december de tentoonstelling “Spitsbergen 79” in het Universiteitsmuseum die een beeld geeft van de werkomstandigheden van de onderzoekers op Spitsbergen destijds. Wim, Nanna en Arjen interviewen hem over zijn ervaringen tijdens de expeditie.

Wim en Nanna interviewen Caspar van den Berg, hoogleraar Global and Local Governance aan de Campus Fryslân in Leeuwarden. Hij vertelt over zijn onderzoek naar de groeiende sociale en economische ongelijkheid tussen bruisregio’s en krimpregio’s. Hij legt hierbij de relatie met o.a. de recente boerenprotesten en de invloed die het heeft op het stemgedrag van mensen en noemt dit ook wel “de wraak van de vergeten regio’s”. Daarnaast vertelt Arjen Dijkstra over de rol van de universiteit in Friesland door de jaren heen.

Amina Helmi is hoogleraar Dynamica, Structuur en Vorming van de Melkweg aan de RUG. Eind 2018 publiceerde ze in Nature over haar onderzoek naar de vorming van onze Melkweg en de ontdekking dat de Melkweg ongeveer 10 miljard jaar geleden is samengesmolten met een ander sterrenstelsel. Vrijdag 21 juni is bekendgemaakt dat zij de Spinoza Premie 2019 zal ontvangen, de hoogste Nederlandse wetenschappelijke onderscheiding. Wim en Arjen interviewen haar over haar onderzoek en wat deze onderscheiding voor haar betekent.

Dieren worden steeds vaker ingezet in therapie met kinderen. Maar werkt het ook en zo ja, hoe werkt het dan? Dr. Steffie van der Steen onderzoekt dit en wordt door Wim Brons en Arjen Dijkstra geïnterviewd over haar onderzoek naar de werking van dierondersteunde interventies (diertherapie). Arjen heeft het laatste wetenschapsnieuws en in het kader van Intellectual Property (IP) week spreken we met de mensen van het Oceangrazer project en het IP-team.

Te gast is Casper Albers, Hoogleraar Toegepaste Statistiek en Datavisualisatie. Wim en Nanna praten met hem o.a. over zijn oratie: "Toegepaste statistiek: van ontwikkeling tot communicatie", factchecken, statistiek in de media en de onderwijsstaking. Daarnaast is er wetenschapsnieuws met Arjen Dijkstra en een interview met Saskia Nijmeijer. Zij onderzoekt of van het aanleren van nieuwe vaardigheden, zou kunnen helpen om langer cognitief gezond te blijven.

In aflevering 7 van In de Wetenschap worden Katherine Stroebe en Tom Postmes geinterviewd over de gaswinningsproblematiek. In gesprek met Wim Brons en Nanna Hilton vertellen zij over hun onderzoek naar de effecten van de aardbevingen in Groningen op de gezondheid en de veiligheid die mensen ervaren. Ook is er wetenschapsnieuws met Arjen Dijkstra.

De 6e aflevering van In de Wetenschap gaat over de platformeconomie. Te gast in de podcast is Peter Verhoef, professor in Marketing. Wim Brons en Nanna Hilton interviewen hem over verschillende facetten ervan en wat de gevolgen zijn. In de 3e aflevering van In de Wetenschap interviewen Wim Brons en Nanna Haug Hilton Marthe Walvoort, winnaar van de Gratama Wetenschapsprijs 2018. Marthe is wetenschapper aan de RUG en doet onderzoek naar verschillende soorten suikers en hun rol in gezondheid en ziekte. De Gratama Wetenschapsprijs is de aanmoedigingsprijs voor jonge en actieve wetenschappers, van de universiteiten van Leiden en Groningen.

Wim Brons en Nanna Haug Hilton interviewen Marie-José van Tol in aflevering 2 van In de Wetenschap. Marie-José doet onderzoek naar de inzet van cognitieve therapie bij het voorkomen van een terugval bij depressie. Zij heeft o.a. hiervoor de Heineken Young Scientists Award gewonnen binnen het Social Sciences vakgebied. Aanleiding voor het gesprek is het "Kennis is Koning" event tijdens Koningsdag.

In deze 1e aflevering interviewen Wim Brons en Nanna Haug Hilton, Mickel Hansen van de Feringa onderzoeksgroep en Arjen Dijkstra, Hoofd Studium Generale.
