Amber-Lee Cruickshank was 2.5 years old when she disappeared on October 17, 1992, from Kingston, New Zealand, located on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu. She was last seen at the home of her stepfathers friends where her family had stopped for the evening. Around 5:30 pm she was last seen by their friend Belinda and then she was never seen again. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on a 21-month long crime spree along with the “Barrow Gang” in the 1930s, committing 12 murders and many robberies, car thefts, and kidnappings. On May 23rd, 1934, the couple was ambushed with over 100 bullet holes marking their car, which is on display in Nevada to this day. After their deaths, a movie was released about the couple, romanticizing their lives and crimes - but they were bandits and serial killers that are still referenced to this day. On January 4th, 2008, a clerk at a gas station in DeKalb County, Georgia watched a man vacuuming out his van. Just hours earlier, the clerk had seen that same man in news reports – he was identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of a woman from three days prior. This man was Gary Hilton, and while he was initially only a person of interest in the disappearance and murder of Meredith Emerson, he ended up being charged with 4 murders in total (and suspected of many more) and became known as the “National Forest Serial Killer” who killed Meredith Emerson, Cheryl Dunlap, and Irene and John Bryant in 2007 and 2008. Thu, 14 Nov 2024 - 363 - Episode 355: The Starved Rock Murders
On March 14, 1960, 47-year-old Frances Murphy, 50-year-old Mildred Lindquist, and 50-year-old Lillian Oetting took a four-day trip to Starved Rock State Park, in LaSalle County, Illinois. After checking into the Starved Rock Lodge, the three women decided to take an afternoon hike to the St. Louis Canyon. Unfortunately, they were never seen alive again. Two days later, Frances, Mildred and Lillian were found inside a cave in the canyon. All 3 women were partially nude, bound with twine and their faces had been bludgeoned beyond recognition. Over 60 years later a lot of theories and questions still surround their case. Did they catch the right man, are there other individuals responsible, has justice really been served?? Whitney Cerak and Laura van Ryn were involved in a tragic accident in April of 2006. They were both students at Taylor University in Indiana, when a van they were riding in collided with a semi truck a top speed and several people were killed instantly. In the aftermath, a mistake was discovered, leading to a heartbreaking revelation for both the Cerak and Van Ryn families. Whitney and Laura’s story gained significant media attention and raised discussions about identity and loss. Then the night before Halloween, Stephanie disappeared, with profanity-laced texts from her ex-boyfriend appearing on her phone. The Jeff Davis 8, which is also referred to as the Jennings 8, is a series of unsolved murders that occurred in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, from 2005 to 2009. During this period, the grim discovery of the bodies of eight women were made in swamps, canals and wooded areas that are located around the town of Jennings. The victims of these crimes were Loretta Chassion Lewis, Ernestine Daniels Patterson, Kristen Lopez, Whitnei Dubois, Laconia Brown, Crystal Zeno, Brittney Gary, and Necole Guillory. These women shared several common traits, including poverty, struggles with drug use, and involvement in sex work. But instead, two gunmen entered the bowling alley, stole money from the safe, rifled through cabinets, then fired 25 shots at 7 victims and lit the building on fire. Despite 3 surviving victims and witnesses seeing the men, they have never been identified and their motive remains unknown to this day. On January 12, 1995, three evil individuals brutally tortured and killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, for no reason. Among them, Christa Pike was sentenced to death and is currently residing on death row in Tennessee for her role in this horrifying crime. Notably, she is the only woman on death row in the state, and as of now, there is no execution date set for her case. Mon, 12 Aug 2024 - 337 - Episode 330: David Parker Ray aka: The Toy Box Killer
David Parker Ray is often regarded as a true monster due to his heinous acts. It is believed that from the mid-1950s until 1999, the year he was finally apprehended, he kidnapped, raped, tortured, and ultimately killed an estimated 40 to 60 individuals, with a significant portion of these victims being women. His reign of terror came to an end thanks to the incredible bravery of a survivor, Cynthia Vigil, who managed to escape from what he referred to as his “toy box.” This courageous act led to the eventual arrest of Ray and his accomplices, who were subsequently sentenced to prison for their appalling crimes. To this day, the FBI continues to seek the public's assistance in identifying numerous items that were collected during the investigation, which includes jewelry and women’s clothing they believe once belonged to Ray's victims. In the 1970s, serial killer Rodney Alcala killed at least 7 people in California, New York, and likely many other states. When he was arrested, hundreds of photographs of men, women, and children were found that he had taken as a “professional photographer”, and many were extremely explicit. While he was eventually convicted of 7 murders and other crimes, it is believed the hundreds of unidentified subjects of his photographs could be victims of Alcala’s that are currently cold cases. On May 24th, 2019, Jennifer Farber Dulos, a mom of five from Connecticut, disappeared while in the midst of a contentious divorce with her husband, Fotis Dulos. In January 2020, Fotis and his then-girlfirned Michelle Troconis were arrested and charged in connection with Jennifer’s murder, but before Fotis Dulos could face justice, he took his life. This year (2024), Michelle Troconis finally faced trial on the charges of conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence, and hindering the prosecution. While her conviction was a small form of justice, Jennifer’s family and friends are still hopeful that one day her body will be found and they will be able to lay her to rest. Karlie Gusé was last seen on October 13, 2018 walking towards Highway 6 after leaving her residence in the White Mountain Estates area of Chalfant, California. She was asleep in the same room as her stepmother when at some point between 5 am and 7:30 a.m. her stepmother awoke and realized Karlie was gone. Karlie was spotted by 3 witnesses walking down the road towards U.S. 6 and seemed to be disoriented. After this, Karlie was never seen again. Then, nearly three months later on August 10, 1989, one-year-old Shane Anthony Walker was also at the same playground in Harlem with his mother, Rosa Glover, when Rosa was momentarily distracted, Shane disappeared. And Leah has never been seen since. Leah Roberts is currently classified as endangered missing. At the time of her disappearance, she had blonde hair and blue eyes and was about 5’6” and 130lbs. She has a surgical scar on her right hip and a metal rod in her leg. She has pierced ears and dimples. She would be 47 years old today. On March 4, 1996, Abe was at the bank dropping off a $12,000 deposit from his place of business, the Second Avenue Deli, when he was robbed and killed. The perpetrators have never been caught and today, Abe’s case remains unsolved. This kind, generous man deserves justice. On March 21, 1979, 18-year-old Carol Lannen was found tied up and nude in the Templeton Woods in Dundee, Scotland. She had been strangled to death. Almost exactly a year later, on February 26, 1980, the partially nude body of 20-year-old Elizabeth McCabe was found less than 150 yards away from where Carol had been discovered. Elizabeth had also been strangled to death. Are these murders connected? Police have officially said no, but with all the similarities many others believe yes, they are.
