Designers spend their days dreaming up better products and better worlds, and you can use their thinking to re-envision your own life, says design professor Bill Burnett. He shares five tips to try, whether you’re at the start of your career or contemplating your next act. Executive director of Stanford’s design program at the d.School, Bill Burnett uses design thinking, a career’s worth of starting companies and coaching students, and a childhood spent drawing cars and airplanes under his Grandmother’s sewing machine to inform his work on how to design your life. In five eyebrow-raising findings, Burnett offers simple but life-changing advice on designing the life you want, whether you are contemplating college or retirement. After years of drawing cars and airplanes under his Grandmother’s sewing machine, Bill Burnett went to college where he discovered that there were people in the world who did this kind of thing every day (without the sewing machine), and they were called designers. Thirty years, five companies, and a couple thousand students later, Burnett is still drawing and building things, teaching others how to do the same, and quietly enjoying the fact that no one has discovered that he is having too much fun. As Executive Director of the Design Program at Stanford, he runs undergraduate and graduate programs in design, both interdepartmental programs between the mechanical engineering and art departments. Burnett worked on design of the award-winning Apple PowerBooks and the original Hasbro Star Wars action figures. He holds a number of mechanical and design patents.

On store shelves, customers might only see a bright yellow smile waiting to add some shine to the kitchen. But, behind the iconic ridges and gleaming eye holes are years of sweat and machine grime for Aaron Krause, 54, Scrub Daddy’s Founder and CEO. Aaron's entrepreneurial journey started when he was just a kid living in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. At 10 years old, he created his first invention: A rope and pulley system to turn his bedroom light on and off from his bed so he didn't have to get up and do it. From there, Aaron kept his innovative side going by washing cars in the neighborhood. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1992 with a psychology degree, he told his family that he was going to open his own car washing business. His family was shocked and upset with his career path, to say the least. But Aaron knew he could make it work. Not only by washing cars, but to start inventing new products. In 1994, he invented his first big product, which was a buffing pad for polishing cars. In 1995, Aaron sold his car washing business and turned his focus to a new venture: Dedication To Detail, a buffing pad manufacturer. A few years after creating his business, he received polyester urethane foam from German manufacturer FoamPartner, which became a key part of Scrub Daddy's material now known as FlexTexture. However, the buffing pads he was selling with this foam at this time did not sell well and he was forced to stop selling it due to low sales in the market.

Aaron Amuchastegui excels at helping people buy real estate at a discount, and he’s turned that expertise into a thriving real estate business. Between his tools—like Lead Propeller, Prophawk, and Roddy’s Foreclosure Listing—and the more than 800 properties he owns across Texas, his businesses generate a quarter million dollars in revenue every month. Learn how he started and grew his real estate investing business in this interview. Aaron started his first real estate business in 2009, just after the housing crash forced the California company where he’d worked as a realtor to downsize. He drew on his real estate expertise to invest in foreclosed properties, building a hedge fund from scratch and flipping over 1,000 homes in 3 years. That success was short lived, however. Competition from large investment firms forced his business to close and led to Aaron shifting his focus to properties in Texas. The lessons he learned growing that first real estate business proved beneficial when he started investing again in 2015. In this episode, he’ll share what he did differently the second time around, as well as his advice for other new investors to avoid making the same missteps. Today, Aaron’s business goes beyond simply investing. He’s expanded into the technology side of real estate investment, starting with his purchase of Roddy’s Foreclosure Listing in 2017. We’ll learn why he decided to broaden his focus to include investor tools and how he’s achieved consistent year-over-year growth with the listing service since he acquired it.

Jim Rohn's best sayings over the years: - We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment. - Nobody on this world will become their best version of themselves until they start practicing consistent self discipline. Jim Rohn is the godfather of personal development, and for the daily discipline and motivation, watch this every day to have consistent growth in your life. - Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. - Success is something you attract by the person you become. - Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day. It is the accumulative weight of our disciplines and our judgments that leads us to either fortune or failure. - Learn to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you dream. - Walk away from the 97 percent crowd. Don’t use their excuses. Take charge of your own life. - When you know what you want, and you want it bad enough, you will find a way to get it. - Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present. - We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. - If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary. - If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree. - Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. - Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom.

Within three years, his company was doing 850 events a year—and that was just the start of the growth spurt that landed it on Inc. 5000’s list of the fastest-growing companies in Texas in 2020. Josh talks us through the steps in his entrepreneurial journey in this episode. The idea to start a photo booth business came to Josh while he was working as an event DJ. He built his first photo booth from scratch and started renting it out for weekend events, all while working a job for a large company during the week. When his job was moved overseas, Josh took this as a sign it was time to focus on his business full-time. By 2015, Josh was facing the best problem a business owner can have: He had more business than he could handle, with as many as 10 events happening on any given Saturday. He was also getting a lot of inquiries from people wondering where they could buy photo booths. This gave Josh the idea to start Photo Booth International, giving entrepreneurs a turnkey model they could use to start photo booth businesses of their own. Josh credits his business growth to a combination of hard work and his marketing expertise. In this interview, he’ll talk through the marketing strategy he used to build a customer base early on, and how he adjusted that strategy when he expanded into selling photo booths to entrepreneurs. We’ll also learn about some of the biggest challenges he faced when starting the business and how he overcame them to achieve such impressive growth.

In this video, Mikael Sant, founder of Sant Lines, will share his advice on how to start a trucking company from scratch. Mikael has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Although he’s still a teenager, Sant Lines is just one of seven businesses he’s started and owns. He saw the industry’s potential through a friend whose family are owner-operators and started researching how to start a trucking business of his own. He founded Sant Lines in May of 2021, and in its first three months of operation, brought in more than $150,000 in revenue. In just over a year, he’s expanded from one truck to a fleet of five, with plans to grow even further by the end of 2022. Maybe most impressive is that Mikael has accomplished this as a self-taught entrepreneur with no prior experience in the trucking industry. We’ll find out how he developed the skills to effectively lead a trucking company and build his business from the ground up. He’ll share how much it cost him to get started and how he financed that investment, along with the systems he implemented to manage the business and how he grew brand awareness and found his first customers. If you’re in the transportation industry, or thinking about starting a trucking business, you’ll definitely want to hear Mikael’s insights! Sisters Jen and Jocelyn have grown their candle business from a side-hustle to a $500,000 a year revenue—and it all started with about a hundred bucks! We’ll learn how they did it in this interview. Turn your hobby into a business & save $1600 while you’re at it: Jocelyn first started making candles as a hobby and a way to give unique gifts to coworkers. She brought her sister Jen on board when she started selling her handcrafted candles at farmers markets. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Jocelyn took the leap to focus on her business full-time, and then Jen followed soon after. One great thing about a candle store is it doesn’t take a ton of money to get started. Jen and Jocelyn reinvested all the profits from their farmers market sales into the business. In the episode, Jen explains the best things to invest that money into to grow a business quickly, and her advice for someone who wants to start a handmade candle business with no money. While they started with a farmers market booth, most of RxLA’s sales today are online. Jen shares how they built their online store and why sending email newsletters has been so impactful in growing their candle sales and revenue. Jen and Jocelyn bootstrapped their business and were doing everything themselves when they started. Jen will share when they hired their first employees and how that’s fueled their growth. One way they tried to scale during Covid was through a brick-and-mortar store, which turned out to be their biggest setback. We’ll learn about the challenges of opening a physical retail space and what Jen and Jocelyn would do differently if they were starting it again.

Serial entrepreneur Abdulla Kudrath is a self-made millionaire who turned his passion for emergency medicine into a $1.9 million a month revenue across his more than a dozen businesses. He shares the strategies he’s used to achieve this success in this interview. Abdulla grew up as a first-generation American in a working class neighborhood of New Jersey. Like many people, Abdulla didn’t have a clear path for his future when he graduated high school. He did well in school and went to college for computer science, but he wasn’t passionate about that career choice–and it showed. He was a self-described “slacker” who put as much energy into playing video games as he did into his studies. All of that changed when he nearly failed out of school. That served as a wake-up call for him to find his passion and what truly brought him happiness, principles that have guided his entrepreneurial ventures since. He shifted from computer science to medicine and got the opportunity to travel to the Amazon, sparking a new passion for biology that led him to become an emergency room doctor. That laid the foundation for his future successes, both within the medical field and in other areas where he’s passionate, like collecting cars. Following his heart and passions helped Abdulla achieve his full potential, but that doesn’t mean his journey was easy. In this interview, we’ll hear the struggles he went through and the challenges he overcame, along with the sacrifices he had to make to get to where he is today. He’ll also share his advice for people who want to become millionaires, and why following your heart and passion is a better way to go about it than focusing on the money.
