Issa Rae, actress, producer, and serial entrepreneur talked about all things beauty and self care on this week’s episode. Issa shared what it was like growing in L.A. and how a trip to Senegal reaffirmed her beauty when she was still in high school. We talked about her iconic looks on Insecure and she underscored how exciting it was to have collaborated with the talented crew who built the worlds so many of us love. Talking about her successful projects led us to an interesting discussion about why she has avoided most cosmetic procedures and embraced what others in the industry might perceive as flaws. When we talked about her many businesses, including her stake in a sailing team, she reiterated that her collaboration with other brilliant people is what has made these ventures so successful.

After spending the past year developing my own fragrance, I’ve become obsessed with learning more about the process of developing fragrance. Maya Njie, an artist and self-taught perfumer, was the perfect person to dive deep on fragrance with. During our conversation Maya and I explored the scent composition of some of her top perfumes while discussing how significant her family history has been in building her business. Charlotte Mensah, the first Black woman inducted into the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame, once turned her kitchen into a laboratory to develop products for her clients. Raised in her grandparent's Ghanian compound, Charlotte was exposed to her grandmother’s boundless creativity and her grandfather’s corporate acumen. Unsurprisingly, she harnessed their wisdom and built an award-winning career in beauty that spans decades. In our conversation, Charlotte talked about her path to opening Hair Lounge, London’s premier afro texture-focused salon since 1999. From defending herself against racist bullies to using hair styling to grieve the loss of her mother, Charlotte’s incredible journey revealed that for her, hair was never just about beautification.

Fresh from my trip back in New York, I reflect on all that’s happened this week. My very first Naked Beauty product has launched! I designed the ultimate cashmere robe for self-care with Garin. After a few days in the city, we transitioned to Sag Harbor where I’ve grown up visiting my whole life. I was honored to get the opportunity to speak to and learn from the people of the Shinnecock Nation, the Native Territory of the Indigenous Americans of Southampton. I was able to sit down with the chairman of Shinnecock Nation, Brian Polite, and hear his perspective on Thanksgiving and their unique native culture. And if this week wasn’t full enough, I landed in LA and went straight to the world premiere of Renaissance: a film by Beyonce! Starting her career off in a world where beauty and wellness were in the shadows of the fashion industry, Julie Schott would’ve never guessed that people would one day fall in love with her products that seem to celebrate all of life’s imperfections. Since its founding, Starface (you know the pimple patches), has sold more than 77 million yellow Hydro-Stars, which translates to 49 Hydro-Stars sold every minute in the last three years (Bustle).
