Today I interviewed Onir.

Onir is an Indian filmmaker, producer, screenwriter and editor. He is best known for his film My Brother…Nikhil, based on the life of Dominic D’Souza, starring Sanjay Suri, Juhi Chawla and Purab Kohli. It was one of the first mainstream Hindi films to deal with AIDS and same-sex relationships. He won the Indian National Film awards for Best Film (Hindi) for the anthology “I AM” in 2011. I AM is considered as one of the first and largest crowd funded and crowd sourced film through social media in India. The film dealt with single motherhood, child sexual abuse, displacement and LGBTQI rights.

Born as Anirban Dhar in Samchi, Bhutan, Onir spent much of his childhood going

to the cinema. Earlier, Onir studied comparative literature from Jadavpur University in 1989, he received a scholarship to study film editing at SFB/TTC in Berlin. He later returned to India and worked as an editor, scriptwriter, art director, music album producer and song/music video director.

Together with Sanjay Suri, Onir started Anticlock Films, a production company that concentrates on promoting young directors and new ideas. His last release was “Kuchh Bheege Alfaaz” which is currently streaming on Netflix.

Onir has received the Diversity Award from Film Victoria Australia and La Trobe University at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2019.

Today I interviewed Dr. Lindsay Hoffman.

Dr. Lindsay Hoffman joined the faculty of the Department of Communication at the University of Delaware in September 2007 after receiving her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Her research examines how citizens use internet technology to become engaged with politics and their communities. She also studies individual and contextual effects of media on individuals’ perceptions of public opinion; the effects of viewing political satire on knowledge and participation; social capital and communication; and factors leading to public-affairs news use.

Dr. Hoffman’s research is theoretically grounded in political communication, mass communication, and public opinion. Her work emphasizes both the social circumstances and psychological predispositions that influence individual media uses and effects. Her research also examines the components of mediated messages that encourage individuals to participate in — or distance themselves from — political activities such as voting, news viewing, or simply expressing opinion.

Today I interviewed Bassem Youssef

Bassem Youssef, dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Arab World, was the host of popular TV show AlBernameg – which was the first of its kind political satire show in the Middle East. AlBernameg became the first online to TV conversion in the Middle East and the most watched show across the region with 30 million viewers every week.

AlBernameg received wide acclaim around the world with coverage in some of the biggest media outlets, topping it off with Youssef’s appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart , Colbert and Trevor Noah.

Throughout its three seasons AlBernameg remained controversial through its humorous yet bold criticism of the ruling powers. In recognition of his success, Youssef was named among the Time Magazine most influential list for 2013 – under the “Pioneers” category, was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the CPJ, and was chosen by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the global thinkers during the same year.

Youssef left Egypt in November 2014. Since then he has been quite visible in various media and academic circles in the US.

In the spring of 2015 Youssef served resident fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F Kennedy School of Government for one semester. In the fall of 2016 Youssef was a visiting Scholar at Stanford University at the Center of Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL)

Youssef’s most recent projects include Democracy Handbook; a ten-part series exploring topics of democracy on fusion.net, and the launch of a new book, Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring in the spring of 2017. Bassem has also been the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary movie “Tickling Giants” . In the process of promoting these projects Youssef was hosted repeatedly with Jon Stewart, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, Larry King and may more television and radio appearances plus being in numerous publications including the New Yorker.

He has hosted the International Emmy Awards gala of 2015, as well as the 49th Carthage Film Festival in Tunis.

Youssef majored in cardiothoracic surgery. He worked in Cairo University as an attending surgeon. He also passed the United States Medical License Exam (USMLE) and is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). Aside of his new found media career Bassem Youssef have started a new global initiative under the name Plant B. He created the only bilingual platform in the world to educate people about how to prevent and reverse chronic diseases through plant based diet. He continues to amass followings to that initiative that now have surpassed over 20 million viewers plus those who follow the platform

The science-fiction comic novel “Channel Blue” was published by Head of Zeus in 2013, and “The Present” was released as an Audible Original in March of 2021. He’s a contributor to The New Yorker. As a journalist and critic, he’s written for Rolling Stone, Vogue, GQ, TV Guide.

Martel served as a show-runner, executive producer and writer for the award-winning sketch show “Key & Peele,” and many other comedies, including “Alternatino,” “Teachers,” “Halfway Home,” and “Strangers With Candy.” He has created numerous series for MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. For his work in television, Martel has received Emmy, WGA, Peabody and Comedy awards.

Timothy J. Shaffer is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies and director of the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy at Kansas State University. He is also principal research specialist with the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona. Connected to these efforts, Shaffer also serves as the associate editor of the Journal of Deliberative Democracy, as a country expert on deliberative democracy with the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem Institute) research project, and as a co-director guiding the work of the Deliberative Pedagogy Lab, an international project focused on applied scholarship about the ways that deliberation can transform higher education educational approaches and environments.

As an interdisciplinary scholar and practitioner of deliberative democracy, civic education, and small group communication, Shaffer focuses on the role of civic professionals in institutional settings such as local government, higher education, and non-governmental organizations in relationship with diverse communities. Through his scholarship, he contributes to discussions within fields such as communication studies, higher education, and civic studies where themes of citizenship, professionalism, community, and civic life are explored.

He received the Early Career Recognition Award from the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement.

Fritz Breithaupt is a provost professor at Indiana University, Bloomington since 1996, since 2010 as a full professor of Germanic Studies, an adjunct professor of Comparative Literature, and an affiliate professor of Cognitive Science. He co-founded the European Union Center at Indiana University in 2005 and served as its co-director until 2007. In Germany, he is most well known outside of academic circles as a columnist for ZEIT Campus magazine and the author of the recurring feature “Frag den Prof” (“Ask the professor”). In 2009-10, he was the distinguished Remak Scholar of Indiana University. He has twice (in 2003 and 2009) won the grant of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, which is “granted in recognition of a researcher’s entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.”

His 2017 book The Dark Sides of Empathy, which we will talk about today, offers an analysis of Donald Trump’s technique to draw empathy to himself. The book appeared on the German bestseller list in February 2017 (Spiegel-Bestseller Liste).

Today I interviewed Mark Eaton of The Capitol Steps.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor.

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest, The Lyin’ Kings. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

She has authored over forty academic articles and book chapters exploring themes related to political entertainment, media psychology, public opinion, and misinformation. Her latest book “Irony and Outrage” examines satire and outrage as the logical extensions of the respective psychological profiles of liberals and conservatives (Oxford University Press, 2020: available here).

Young is a Research Fellow with the University of Delaware’s Center for Political Communication and was awarded the University of Delaware’s Excellence in Teaching Award  in 2014. The subject of my latest work is vulnerability. This is not a mid-life crisis, although sometimes it feels that way. It is my attempt to use photography to examine how vulnerability leads to connection in a disconnected world.

So far I have been overwhelmed with the responses I have received and the amazing individuals I have met. I’ve photographed many people from all walks of life, and I will continue because I am finding that photography is just the means; what is most fulfilling are the intimate conversations about life, fears, regrets, love and joy. I see so much beauty in this world and in each person I photograph. So, as I continue my work I am revealing more about myself and the way art affects people.

​Part of me being vulnerable is to allow a place for others to comment and continue the conversation. At a recent gallery show I included a way for this to happen–a mirror, some pens and post-it notes. To my surprise, the reactions and the thoughts on vulnerability were many. Some of the notes brought me to tears.

Sammy Rangel is an author, social worker, peace activist, speaker, trainer and father. His autobiography, “Fourbears: The Myths of Forgiveness,” chronicles his life from the physical and sexual abuse he endured as a child to his path of self-destruction that culminated in a 15 1/2-year prison sentence. In 2012, Sammy founded Formers Anonymous, a national self-help group based on the 12-step model for people addicted to street life and violence. In May 2015, he participated in the TEDxDanubia Conference: Balance On the Edge held in Budapest, where he spoke about the power of forgiveness.

In 2017, he was honored in a special tribute to Everyday Heroes in the Global Campaign Against Violent Extremism. Sammy holds a Master of Social Work from Loyola University-Chicago. He previously served as a program director for a youth outreach program in his hometown of Racine for 16 years. He is also a second-degree black belt, practices mixed martial arts, and is a singer on a Native American drum.

He is the co-founder and Executive Director of the organization Life After Hate which is committed to helping people leave the violent far-right to connect with humanity and lead compassionate lives.

It does not take someone who has been in trauma to become a member of the violent far right — the broken homen arrative of the white supremacist is no longer valid. It can simply be someone who is persuadable.
The violent far right is using the language of civil rights to promote their cause, even going so far as to say that they are not racist.
There is a way to melt away hatred on Twitter that does not entail being hateful.
It is possible to forgive people who do horrendous acts.
For people who are involved in the violent far right, the organization’s networks are vast and they make it very hard to leave.

Today I interviewed Charles LoGiudice, Jr. My Dad.

Charles LoGiudice, Jr. was born and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and later raised a family in Howard Beach, Queens. In case you’re wondering, he’s very, very Italian. He just retired from many years working in Hunts Point Terminal Market, in the Bronx. He is the inspiration for the web series DRIVING WITH DAD.

He is probably the wittiest person I know. Some people talk about cheesy dad jokes, and it’s a thing that I had to learn about because my dad was never cheesy, always incredibly funny. If he took to the stage he’d blow everyone away.

Danielle Holtz is the Postdoctoral Fellow at Oregon State University’s Center for the Humanities. As a historian of US political culture, intellectual history,and US foreign policy, Dr. Holtz focuses on conservatism and white supremacy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She is currently working on a book manuscript about racial nationalism and American politics based on her dissertation, “’Who Are the True Conservatives?’: A Critical History of American Conservatism in the Nineteenth Century.” She received her PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania in 2017. She also served as the assistant editor for the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Military and Diplomatic History, published in 2013.

Today I interviewed Sammy Rangel from Life After Hate. This is part two of that discussion.

Sammy Rangel is an author, social worker, peace activist, speaker, trainer and father. His autobiography, “Fourbears: The Myths of Forgiveness,” chronicles his life from the physical and sexual abuse he endured as a child to his path of self-destruction that culminated in a 15 1/2-year prison sentence. In 2012, Sammy founded Formers Anonymous, a national self-help group based on the 12-step model for people addicted to street life and violence. In May 2015, he participated in the TEDxDanubia Conference: Balance On the Edge held in Budapest, where he spoke about the power of forgiveness.

In 2017, he was honored in a special tribute to Everyday Heroes in the Global Campaign Against Violent Extremism. Sammy holds a Master of Social Work from Loyola University-Chicago. He previously served as a program director for a youth outreach program in his hometown of Racine for 16 years. He is also a second-degree black belt, practices mixed martial arts, and is a singer on a Native American drum.

He is the co-founder and Executive Director of the organization Life After Hate which is committed to helping people leave the violent far-right to connect with humanity and lead compassionate lives.

MJ Trump is Michael Falato. “MJ Trump” started the week before Halloween 2015. Hearing comedian Ben Stein once wrote speeches for Nixon, MJ started writing a Tall Tale as future President Trump at Toastmasters. It was an Advanced Manual Public Relations Crisis Management Speech. “Kim Jong Fool, mess with America, we’ll turn you into Egg Foo Young!” Our Club President said it was a Saturday Night Live skit. He encouraged MJ to do it again and again. Halloween came later that week, MJ worked the door with a Sandy Ducan Wig turn backward & the Insane Improv couldn’t be stopped. Everyone loved the Donald & wanted their picture taken. Insulting people was natural for MJ being a Yankee Transplant. Growing up in the north (NJ & Virginia) helped MJ take to the role like a fat beaver to fresh wood.

Next was winning Club & Area Tall Tales Contest & Humorous Speech Contest at both levels as “MJ Trump.” Jan 2017, MJ TRUMP Hit the Comedy Clubs and started booking Private Events. MJ Trump is full of contagious positive energy. With over 400 performances” MJ” is on his 5th wig and the future looks absolutely YUGE. Future goal 55min on HBO.

Today my co-host Melania Trump interviewed Neil Rubenstein.

Neil Rubenstein doesn’t do drugs. He’s never had a sip of alcohol. So it may come as a bit of a surprise when the Long Island comedian references past occupations like owning a brothel or running an illegal poker room. It’s a dynamic that makes Neil both incredibly interesting and incredibly funny – something that served him well when his role on a Spike TV show as a gambling expert introduced him to the world of stand-up comedy. Stand up was more than an outlet – it straightened out his life.
“I accidentally became a good role model,” Neil Rubenstein says.

Neil doesn’t shy away from discussing his former life of crime. Though he credits comedy with in some ways saving his life, his past experiences inform his understanding and his art. They also inform his work ethic.

“I can’t just play cards, I had to run a poker room,” Neil says, by way of explanation. It’s an ethic he brings to his comedy: a dedication to doing something to the utmost degree. “I couldn’t just do stand up, I had to quit my job and focus everything on the craft.”

His dedication and humor have earned him accolades including runner up in 2017 Long Island Laugh Off and the Main Event of The World Series of Comedy.

“Neil’s a burly, tattooed guy who plays against type; kind, cerebral, but still casually mentions past illegal activities the way I might reference a Renaissance Lit course I took in college,” Joe Devito, famous comedian, said about Neil’s show. It’s a show you won’t want to miss.
