Sun, 19 Jul 2020 - 10min - 12 - Saint of the Day - St. John Jones & John Wall - July 12, 2020
Saints John Jones and John Wall’s story These two friars were martyred in England in the 16th and 17th centuries for refusing to deny their faith. John Jones was Welsh. He was ordained a diocesan priest and was twice imprisoned for administering the sacraments before leaving England in 1590. He joined the Franciscans at the age of 60 and returned to England three years later while Queen Elizabeth I was at the height of her power. John ministered to Catholics in the English countryside until his imprisonment in 1596. He was condemned to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. John was executed on July 12, 1598. John Wall was born in England but was educated at the English College of Douai, Belgium. Ordained in Rome in 1648, he entered the Franciscans in Douai several years later. In 1656 he returned to work secretly in England. In 1678, Titus Oates worked many English people into a frenzy over an alleged papal plot to murder the king and restore Catholicism in that country. In that year Catholics were legally excluded from Parliament, a law which was not repealed until 1829. John Wall was arrested and imprisoned in 1678, and was executed the following year. John Jones and John Wall were canonized in 1970 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sean-sharer/support

Prayer to St. Benedict
O glorious St. Benedict, sublime model of all virtues, pure vessel of God's grace! Behold me, humbly kneeling at thy feet. I implore thy loving heart to pray for me before the throne of God. To thee I have recourse in all the dangers which daily surround me. Shield me against my enemies, inspire me to imitate thee in all things. May thy blessing be with me always, so that I may shun whatever God forbids and avoid the occasions of sin.
Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces of which I stand so much in need, in the trials, miseries and afflictions of life. Thy heart was always so full of love, compassion, and mercy towards those who were afflicted or troubled in any way. Thou didst never dismiss without consolation and assistance any one who had re-course to thee. I therefore invoke thy powerful intercession, in the confident hope that thou wilt hear my prayers and obtain for me the special grace and favor I so earnestly implore (mention it), if it be for the greater glory of God and the welfare of my soul.
Help me, O great St. Benedict, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to be ever submissive to His holy will, and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven. Amen.

We meet a Mary in the humble home of Nazareth, as she struggles to take in the message from the Angel. In her "Let it be', Mary's life and our lives are changed forever, for it is at this moment the Word is made flesh. We travel with Mary to visit her beloved Elizabeth and then with Joseph to Bethlehem, where in the hush of the Holy Night, the Son of God is born. We hear Simeon prophesying joy and sorrow for Mother and Child, and we end as Jesus begins to fulfill the prophesy. With Mary, Lus us ponder all this in our hearts.

The Sorrowful Mysteries
We find Jesus in the Garden of Olives, suffering agony for us. We see him cruelly scourged and crowned with thorns. We join Mary as Jesus painfully inches His way to Calvary. We stand with Mary and John at the foot of the cross, as Jesus dies forgiving His enemies. Finally, we see Mary stricken with unspeakable sorrow, embracing the broken body of Her Son. Mary trusted that God would bring good out of Jesus' suffering. She is here to help us believe the same for ourselves.

The Luminous Mysteries
With Mary we contemplate the face of Christ as Jesus moves from his hidden life to his public ministry. Baptized by John, Jesus is affirmed by the Father and empowered by the Spirit. At Mary’s request Jesus works His first miracle, opening the hearts of His disciples to faith, to which we are all called in proclaiming the Kingdom. The Transfiguration is par excellencethe mystery of light as Jesus reveals his divinity to His disciples. In the Eucharist Jesus gives us his Body and Blood, the sign of His undying love.
