Wed, 20 Nov 2024 - 1097 - Dr David Krofcheck: University Of Auckland Senior Lecturer in nuclear physics on the potential use of nuclear energy in New Zealand
Is it time to go back on our nuclear-free stance?
Power bills will be rising soon, the Commerce Commission allowing Transpower and local lines companies to raise their prices to avoid worse hikes further down the road.
The average household bill is set to increase by $10 a month in April, and by $5 a month for the following four years.
New Zealand has had a firm nuclear-free stance since 1987, but could introducing nuclear power be the solution to our power struggles?
Dr David Krofcheck, Senior Lecturer in Nuclear Physics at Auckland University, told Matt Heath and Tyler Adams that nuclear power generation is a lot safer than people assume.
He says the disasters that occurred in places like Fukushima and Chernobyl are abnormal events, and not the standard path for the operation of nuclear power plants.
Renewables currently provide 82% of New Zealand’s electricity needs, and 40% of our total primary energy, but despite their clean nature, there is still an issue with intermittency.
Krofcheck says that he’d love for New Zealand to be open to nuclear to provide baseline power, since it would mitigate the intermittency problem.

Mon, 18 Nov 2024 - 1094 - Newstalk ZB’s Matt Heath meets Coldplay’s Chris Martin backstage at final Eden Park show
When Newstalk ZB host Matt Heath reviewed Coldplay’s first Eden Park show on radio show The Mike Hosking Breakfast, he had no idea Chris Martin himself could have been tuning in.
Speaking to listeners on Newstalk ZB today, where he co-hosts Afternoons with Tyler Adams, Heath revealed how his recap of the band’s opening-night show resulted in him being invited to go backstage ahead of their final concert.
He attended the first show on Wednesday, November 13 and shared his thoughts on air the next morning.
“Chris Martin heard the review, so he got management to reach out to me,” he told listeners.
“Through a series of people, they tracked me down and invited me along to the show on Saturday, and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s very, very nice of them’. I thought I was just going along to the show to see it with free tickets ... and then found out that we had friends and family invites.”
Newstalk ZB host Matt Health recalled meeting Chris Martin backstage ahead of Coldplay's final show in New Zealand. Photo / Jason OxenhamThat meant he and his partner Tracy got to hang out in the friends-and-family area before the show and mingle with the band members – but it didn’t stop there.
“I met a lovely member of the management team, also called Chris ... He goes, ‘Hey, the band want to meet you’. And so –this was just before the show – they lead me and Tracy backstage.
“We go to the area just before the tunnel, before they run on to the stage, and it’s like an army back there putting the show together, because the show is incredible and there’s so many moving parts.
“Then the band come out, and then Chris Martin comes up to me and he gives me a big hug and he whispers in my ear.
“He gives me a cuddle and goes, ‘I heard your review and thank you so much ... it really meant a lot. I believe if people do good things and say good things and put love out into the world, I want it to come back in, so I wanted to invite you here, and I just wanted to say thank you to you personally’.”
While his review was “glowing”, Heath did start by describing Martin as “punchable”. “I’m a cynical guy,” he laughed on air.
However, the singer seemed not to take it personally. “He did mention that. He said, ‘I loved your review, even though you described me as punchable at the start’.”
Martin then invited the radio host and his partner to join the huddle with the band and back-up singers as he hyped them up before they headed out onto the stage.
“He said thank you again, gave me a hug and ran on stage.”
Heath was then tasked with helping to throw balloons into the audience as the show started, though he admitted, “I think I messed up the throwing of the balloons at some point. I needed to duck down.”
Looking back, the radio host says it was a “surreal” experience.
“I’ve always loved their music, but after seeing them live, I said in the review, ‘I would follow this guy into battle’ – and I would follow that guy into battle,” he told listeners.
“He can hold 50,000 people in the palm of his hand and everyone’s smiling, and the guy can sing like nothing else.”

Weight-loss drugs have seen a surge in popularity in recent years - but there's still common misconceptions about what they can do for people.

Ever snooped through your partner’s phone?
New challenger in the telco market Kiwi Mobile has been surveying New Zealanders on their phone habits.
Almost two-thirds of Kiwis allow their partners to use their phones, with the 18-to 34-year-old group the most trusting revealing that eighty per-cent will hand over their phone, according to the research. However, that same age group are also the most likely to go through their partner’s phone, with nearly one-third, admitting to snooping on their partner’s phone.
Overall, one-fifth of Kiwis surveyed admitted to snooping on their partner’s phone, a further five percent wouldn’t say.

Fri, 26 Apr 2024 - 999 - Jason Walls: Political Editor on Melissa Lee's demotion from Cabinet and loss of portfolios
Embattled Broadcasting Minister Melissa Lee has been stripped of the portfolio and booted from Cabinet.
The Prime Minister has revealed the change after weeks of Lee struggling to front on the collapse of Newshub and cuts at TVNZ.
Chris Luxon says Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith will pick up the portfolio.
He says there has been significant change in the media environment which has moved quickly, and he wants a good senior Minister responsible.
Political Editor Jason Walls told Si and James that this was unexpected news, but it makes sense.
He said that Luxon didn’t say that the Ministers were doing a bad job, they just weren’t performing optimally and so he had to move them around.
Lee continues to hold the Economic Development portfolio, which Walls said is quite an unusual one to have outside of Cabinet, especially for a party that has such a strong focus on economic development.
