This week was totally dominated by the Budget, with this week's Small Cap Value Reports (on Stockopedia) giving extensive coverage & interesting reader comments debating the pros & cons. Overall, I think the removal of uncertainty in many areas now allows businesses and individuals to plan ahead again, and I'm positive on the potential for an autumn/winter recovery in small caps, which often starts around this time of year.

As usual, nothing is advice, these are just my personal opinions, which are sometimes right, and sometimes wrong - because nobody can reliably predict the future!

Press reporting suggests a substantial hike in employers NICs could be announced on this coming Wed 30 Oct's budget. I crunch some numbers, which demonstrate that retail and especially hospitality could be facing significant falls in profit, hence maybe best avoided until the dust has settled?

Expect carnage if they cut AIM's IHT exemption, or a big rebound if they don't! Place your bets ...

Lots of companies reporting again, with 5 profit warnings, 8 GREENs (things we like the most), and 7 AMBER/GREENs (moderately positive).

Sorry this is a week late. I rattle through 51 companies reporting between 14-18 Oct 2024. As always we find some potentially interesting ideas (remember we're only doing quick reviews, you need to do your own much more detailed research, hence why nothing is recommendations, just quick opinions).

I have a good rant about "trading updates" that don't even state if the company is ahead/in line/below market expectations. We need clearer, more honest reporting, not increased PR obfuscation!

I expect we're now coming to the end of the quiet summer period, so we're bracing for a deluge of updates in Sept.

I also ponder if the widely anticipated attacks on savers & pensions from the Labour Govt (with it's incredibly poorly judged messaging of impending doom) might be harming markets by incentivising investors to cash out at a lower CGT rate?

Yes I'm back in Gozo, my favourite tiny island of them all. A few technical problems, and drinking Cisk in the sun, means things didn't go completely to plan. Also podcastle stopped me and demanded a 145 Euro fee to continue, which didn't amuse me. So I paid the ransom, against all my principles, and continue in part 2.

I've been bullish for small caps since autumn 2023, and it's looking increasingly that I was right. Takeover activity (esp from US private equity) is almost daily proof that UK mid caps especially are often too cheap. Graham & I have seen c.20% gains in our top ideas lists in just 4 months. This is an exciting time to be buying cheap, carefully selected UK stocks I think, ignore the doomsters, they're way behind the curve!

This week we said goodbye to investing legend Charlie Munger, and I reflect on how Berkshire's stunning success is "only" about 20% pa compound - something that we should be able to replicate ourselves. Maybe not for 65 years though! It gives us something to aim for, and reinforces the vital quality of patience in investing.

It was wonderful to catch up with everyone at Mello Chiswick, chatting to many Stockopedia subscribers there, and hearing from superb speakers and some excellent companies too.

The small caps market continues to be dominated by profit warnings and takeover bids, so quite a lottery at the moment! Will the big, inflation-busting pay rises for pensioners, benefits claimants, and Living Wage, plus the 2% cut in NICs from January, trigger a consumer boom in 2024 (just in time for the election!)? That seems the Govt's strategy, which seems to be pulling in the opposite direction to the Bank of England. So the usual chaos!

A notable week with 3 takeover bids just in one day! Bargains galore in the small caps space, evidenced by all the takeover bids. We've seen a strong rebound in the last 3 weeks, in both small and mid caps. Is this the (overdue!) start of a new bull market, or just another bear market bounce? No idea, we focus on company fundamentals, and we're seeing many smashing risk:reward situations as dislocated market liquidity throws numerous bargains at us, so Paul remains very enthusiastic (taking a medium term view). My picks for 2023 continue to strongly out-perform too. So it's not all doom & gloom at all!

Terrible market conditions continue, with obvious signs of distressed sellers (instis with redemptions, and capitulating PIs probably).

Some lovely bargains presented on a plate to us too.

As AIM grinds down to almost half of its 2021 peak, even the usually buoyant Paul is starting to get a bit miffed with this bear market.

Not just small caps either, as Mid-caps are now down 10% YTD, and down 30% from the 2021 high.

Yet the market is now cheap, and we're getting that confirmed almost daily, with takeover bids, often from the US, private equity or trade buyers.

Plus a little rant about people who've annoyed me with their unpleasant & inaccurate comments!

Grim market conditions continue for UK small caps, now down c.17% YTD, and down c.47% from the 2021 high.

Plenty of bargains, but also plenty of banana skins with some profit warnings this week - telecoms suppliers and building materials seem trouble hotspots. B2B generally is looking an increasing area of concern, but that's why share prices are so low.

PER can be a flawed concept in a downturn.

Top-down thoughts - finding sectors with tailwinds, avoiding ones with headwinds?

Rising profits from interest on cash piles - but what about the deterioration in the real value of the cash pile?

Switching from dead positions into more buoyant ones?

AIM mostly rubbish, but a smaller number of lovely companies in there - needles in haystack!

Frustration from prices grinding down on no news - do sellers know something? Probably not!

Some shock profit warnings this week, especially from Spirent (SPT) and XPP - one has sound finances, the other has an over-geared balance sheet, and now looks in trouble. It's vital to avoid over-stretched balance sheets right now.

A few profit warnings this week as tougher conditions start to bite in several cyclical sectors. It feels almost random how some bounce after a profit warning, whilst others continue falling. Very frustrating market conditions, with AIM now down 43% from its peak 2 years ago. However, Paul thinks we're over the worst, and relishes all the great value opportunities out there, but it's still a minefield.

A huge number of small caps reporting this week, we covered about 50 in the Small Cap Value Reports! Several profit warnings, as a possibly slowing economy begins to bite in some sectors. But also some nicely performing, good value shares are covered. Rarely have I seen so much value on offer in small caps, so I remain very bullish about the medium term outlook. I (Paul Scott) spotted strong profits/order book from Cohort's FY 4/2023 results, reviewed positively in the Stockopedia Small Cap Value Report of 19 July 2023. So I reached out to ask the CEO to do an independent, no fees interview with me. I only interview companies that I genuinely rate highly, as reasonably priced, and do them for general interest, not as a commercial thing.

I do not hold a position in Cohort (but am considering one), I am not charging a fee, and this is NOT financial advice or a recommendation, please always do your own research, and don't rely on mine - because some of my share ideas will do well, and others badly. Taking a risk here, but Paul fires the starting pistol for a new bull market in UK small caps! (just an opinion remember, could be right or wrong). Valuations are now becoming so attractive, due to many investors pulling out, that opportunities galore are presenting themselves. Hence why I think this is now time to be loading up with decent company shares, at modest valuations. I think sentiment may have now bottomed out, and money could begin flowing back in. Time will tell!

Paul rattles through trading updates and results from 24 UK smaller companies this week, covered in the Stockopedia Small Cap Value Reports, written by Paul and Graham. As usual, we found some decent companies trading well, and reasonably or cheaply priced. One or two dogs too unfortunately, warning on profits through slipping out big broker downgrades (ZOO And TLY).

Paul starts by examining Chinese eCommerce company TEMU, and its very aggressive business model, clearly designed to hoover up market share, through heavy subsidies. My mystery shop has recently been air freighted into the UK, both uneconomic and polluting, but all in the name of research.

4 positive, and 4 negative things about the UK economy right now.

Large and mid-caps have now joined AIM in being significantly down year-to-date. When will the pain end? Does the UK market have structural problems, as well as more competition for funds from cash deposits & fixed interest.

House prices are falling heavily in real terms now, but does it matter?

Will hydrogen power heavy vehicles in future? Or solid state batteries? Which tech is the one to back?

Another really difficult week for UK shares, and not just small caps - FTSE 100 and mid-caps also now well down for the year.
