Sitting with me in the firehouse is John Ippolito Jr. John Ippolito Jr. A third-generation firefighter, John Ippolito Jr. has dedicated over 35 years to serving his community. As the current Assistant Chief of the Bay Shore Fire Department (BSFD), John's passion for the fire service runs deep - he's been an active member since joining the Juniors in 1985. After college, John became an EMT and volunteered with the Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance before embarking on a 22-year career with the NYPD, retiring in 2022 from the elite Emergency Service Unit. Throughout it all, John has remained a fixture at the BSFD, earning the prestigious New York State Firefighter of the Year award in 2008 for his heroic actions. Now in his second stint as Chief, John continues the family legacy, with his father, twin brothers, and son Andrew all active members of the department. With an eye for photography that has landed his images in Fire News, John is a true renaissance man of the fire service.

In addition to his distinguished career on the frontlines, Noel has also been a fire commissioner for the past 17 years, further demonstrating his leadership and passion for the fire service.

He is the former Chief of the North Merrick, NY, Fire Department and a senior member of that department's training committee. Wilders is an instructor of national curriculum for the Incident Safety Officers and an advocate for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's Courage to Be Safe program. Chief Wilders has been employed by the Nassau County Fire Service Academy Public education division and division of fire training since 1999.

Sitting with me in the firehouse is Dominic Russo. Dominic Russo's lifelong passion for firefighting began at just 3 years old, when he started accompanying his uncle to the fire station. From watching the "road runners" race at drills to helping with truck maintenance, Dominic was hooked. This early exposure led him to join his local junior fire department at age 14, where he honed his skills and rose through the ranks.
Now a seasoned veteran, Dominic has served as a firefighter, EMT, and hazmat technician for over 20 years. He's held numerous leadership positions, including Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, and is currently the Chief of Department. Dominic is also an active member of the Brookhaven Town Drill Team Captains Association, where he puts his expertise to use training the next generation of firefighters. When he's not responding to emergencies, Dominic works as a Construction Equipment Operator for the Town of Islip and as a Fire and EMS Dispatcher. With his unwavering dedication and impressive accomplishments, Dominic embodies the spirit of the firefighting community.

Sitting with me in the firehouse is Gerard Gagliano. Gerry is a member of Hicksville Fire Department Volunteer Hose Company 4 and EMS Squad. Having originally joined in 1983 as a member of Protection Hook and Ladder Co. 1. He is an Ex-Captain of the Rescue Squad, and past member of the Department Hazardous Materials Response Team, and also was a member of the Hicks Drill Team from 1985 to 1993. Gerry became an EMT in 1984 and an EMT-CC in 1985, and is currently an EMT still. Gerry has also had a 34 year career as a dispatcher, first working full time for the Westbury Fire District in 1985 where he was a Supervisor the last two years. In 1993 he was hired by Nassau County Firecom where he worked until he retired in 2019. The last 10 years at Firecom Gerry was a Supervisor and has also worked several part time dispatcher jobs during the years at Hicksville (14 years) and brief stays at Syosset and Jericho as well.

With a focus on innovative equipment and strong team camaraderie, Chris’s wealth of hands-on experience makes him a trusted leader in the field.

Sitting with me in the firehouse is Willie Geddish. From chasing fire trucks on his bike as a child to becoming a respected partner at a national law firm, Willie has always had a deep connection to the fire service. Growing up across the street from the fire department, he would spend his youth hanging out with the firefighters and attending drills. This early exposure sparked a lifelong passion, leading him to join the department at just 18 years old.
Over the next 12 years, he climbed the ranks from lieutenant to assistant chief, bringing his unique legal expertise to the department. As the head of the investigation committee, he oversees the recruitment and retention of new members, ensuring the continued strength of the team, leads fire prevention efforts and serves as a key liaison between the department and the community.
While his day job may be in the corporate world, his true calling is on the fireground. He thrives on the camaraderie and immediacy of the fire service. With a deep appreciation for the honest, team-oriented culture, Willie finds the work a refreshing contrast to the desk-bound life of a lawyer.

Sitting with me in the firehouse is Edwin Wilmarth, III. Edwin Wilmarth, III joined the Broad Channel Fire Department as a Junior August 11th, 1993 and was voted in to the main department April 9th, 1998. FF Engines 201 and 203 1998-2001. Lieutenant Engine 203 2002-2006. Captain Engine 203 2007-2011. Assistant Chief 2012 & 2013. Chief of Dept. 2014. He has also held Corporation Officer positions over the years, Sgt. at Arms and Vice President.
He is currently an appointed Deputy Chief assigned to Fire Operations just to help guide the current chiefs, review and revise SOPs and help train the current FFs and Bosses. Most of the time he is in the Chauffeurs seat of the engine but will also act as IC in the absence of the other Chiefs, ride the front seat in the absence of a boss or ride the back step as one of the boys. He is always willing to fill whatever empty seat as needed.
Edwin was awarded the Firefighter of the Year award 2x. Throughout his career he was also fortunate enough to be on some great crews on some bad calls that resulted in being awarded 6 unit citations over the years as well as an honorable life save and a medal for bravery.
From 9/11 to the Crash of United Airlines Flight 587 to Hurricane Sandy, he has been lucky enough (depending on how you look at it) to be on the front lines with others at many of the departments “Big Ones” over the years.
He’s done a few sit down interviews over the years with various outlets like CBS as well as the Gettin Salty podcast. Edwin also runs his own FB group dedicated to the history of all the current and former NYC Volunteer Fire and EMS Companies; Facebook.com: A Pictorial History of Volunteer Fire & EMS Companies in New York City.
Additionally, he is his departments historian as well the historian for the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of the City of New York which represents the 9 current NYC Vollie Fire companies and an admin for their FB page and website. www.vfanyc.org

Sitting with me in the firehouse is James Hickman. James joined a volunteer fire department in North Carolina back in 1977. When he moved to New York in 1983, he joined the Floral Park Fire Department; starting in Reliance Engine Co. #2. After a couple of years James transferred to the Rescue Co. and has been there ever since. In 1993 James was hired with Firecom as Operator 48. He later moved over to the Fire Marshal Office and he is still there to this day! James started as a Fire Marshal in the General Inspection Division then transferred to the Hazmat Division. In 2001 he transferred to the Investigation Division where he has primarily been since then. James describes his overall experience with the Fire Service as "always being very good him." He says he has gained many friends from the very start that he is very proud and happy to say that he still has today. Family is the most important thing to James. Him and his wife are expecting their first grandchild this fall!

Sitting with me in the firehouse is Chief Dudley. Chief Dudley joined North Lindenhurst FD as a junior firefighter September 1989, the Lindenhurst Fire Department 3/3/92 and was an active member until 4/12/99. Soon after he joined the North Lindenhurst FD where he was assigned to Engine & Heavy Rescue Co.1. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant in 2003, elected 1st Lieutenant in 2004 and elected Captain 2005. Chief Dudley continued to grow in the field as he went on to being elected 2nd Deputy Chief 2007 (ran unopposed), elected 1st Deputy Chief 2008-2009, elected Chief of the Department 2009-2011 and elected Captain 2017.
In his professional work life, this month has made 30 years of him being an Emergency Service Dispatcher. Since June of 2019 he has been serving on the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees (AME) the union which represents 10,000 active and retired employees of the Suffolk County workforce in 924 different job titles and is NY Largest independent union and is currently the Executive Vice President of the organization.
Chief Dudley has served several times as the fill in host on Suffolk AME's weekly radio program “Suffolk Matters” heard on WALK FM and its partner stations and on YouTube, with a listening audience of 800,000.
He joined the Farmingville FD 2/10/20 where he was assigned to Lightning Engine Co.3, was a member of Babylon Central Fire Alarm from 8/8/94-12/31/07 and now with the Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services.

Sitting with me in "The Firehouse" today is former Chief Hugh Lacy. Raised in Hempstead, Hugh ventured to Boston for higher education, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Brandeis University and an MBA in Information Technology from Bentley University. After acquiring a wealth of knowledge, he returned to New York and has dedicated the last 19 years to the fire service. A few years ago, he reached the pinnacle of his career, achieving the highest rank as Chief of Department for the Uniondale Fire Department.
Being a firefighter is often a thankless job, demanding immense dedication and bravery with little public recognition. Firefighters plunge into perilous situations to save lives and protect property, often at great personal risk. Yet, their heroism is frequently taken for granted, overshadowed by the routine nature of their duties. Hugh, like many in the service, exemplifies the selfless commitment that defines the true spirit of firefighting. His story is not just one of professional achievement but also a testament to the quiet resilience and unwavering courage that characterizes the best of this noble profession.

Sitting in the firehouse is Ex-Chief John Skelly. Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1963, his family moved to Long Island in the early summer of 1964. John has been a lifelong resident of Uniondale for nearly 60 years, where he experienced many of his "firsts"—first friends, first school, first job, and countless cherished childhood memories.
In early 2002, John met his wonderful wife, Andrijana. They started dating immediately after they met, got engaged on the 4th of July in 2005, and married in September 2006. As John often says, when you find someone who can tolerate your quirks, you hold on tight.
Over the years, John has witnessed many changes in Uniondale, as is common in any community. However, the constant has been positive progress. Most changes have been for the better, which is a big reason he has always stayed.
The fire department has played a significant role in John's life, giving him the opportunity to engage in one of his greatest joys—helping people simply because he can. He always tells new and prospective members, "It's a lot of work, but it's a whole lot of fun too."

Sitting with him in the firehouse today is Harold Long, who proudly holds the title of Ex-Chief after decades of distinguished service. He is currently an active member of the Uniondale Fire Department, where he has served for 27 years. Alongside his duties at the fire department, Long has also been an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) for 24 years, bringing his expertise to various boroughs including the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
Currently detailed to Rikers Island, Long has a rich history of leadership within the Uniondale Fire Department. His roles have included Secretary, 1st and 2nd Lieutenant, and he has twice been honored as ex-captain. His experience and commitment to the community have not only shaped his career but also inspired many others in the field.
Despite his active status, Long has recently begun to embrace a mentorship role, guiding younger firefighters and EMTs. His next career phase will be at the FDNY EMS Academy, where he is set to train as an instructor. There, he will use his vast knowledge and experience to teach and develop the next generation of EMTs and paramedics, ensuring his legacy of service and leadership continues to influence future lifesavers.
