We’re back and we’re peering through time. Handily, Yog-Sothoth has granted us the power to see he who is to come after us. Well, except Charles Dexter Ward actually turned up in 1926, around a hundred years earlier than anticipated. Time can be like that.

Happily, Ward has been raised from his essential saltes several times since then — on screen, in audio, and even within the pages of the occasional scenario. We’ll try to catch up with him where we can. Let’s just hope that it’s really Ward we’re meeting and not Joseph Curwen. It’s so embarrassing when we mix them up!

This is the conclusion of our investigation into HP Lovecraft’s novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. We start off with some final thoughts on the story itself, and then move on to discussing how it has found its way into other media. Considering what an overlooked tale this is, it has a rich history of being adapted.

We’re back and we’re peering into wells. Perhaps it’s not unusual to find dead things in wells, but they aren’t generally this animated. Maybe the poor things would lie down and die if there was room for them to do so. Or maybe its just that gnawing hunger that keeps them going. Either way, we suppose they wouldn’t really be ye liveliest awfulness without being lively…

We are continuing our investigation into HP Lovecraft’s novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, heading deep into the catacombs below Pawtuxet. This section contains some of the most horrific scenes Lovecraft wrote, as well as a brief introduction to Grecian pottery. Every day is an education with Howie.

This episode brings us to the end of the story itself, but we shall return next time to discuss the various ways in which The Case of Charles Dexter Ward has been adapted for the screen, audio dramas, and Call of Cthulhu.

We’re back and we’re rearranging the furniture in the library. All perfectly normal stuff. Nothing to worry about. Everyone gives a strangled cry or two when lifting heavy objects. And that nasty smell? Furniture polish. Trust us. So normal.

We’re back and we’re researching our family histories. Nothing but wholesome stuff here. Surely everyone’s ancestors faced an angry mob or two. It was just the done thing in those times.

Main Topic: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward part 2

Following last episode’s look into the story’s origins, we are continuing our investigation into HP Lovecraft’s novel The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. This time, we move on to one of the more action-packed parts of the book, and, indeed, of Lovecraft’s work in general. The jilted Ezra Weeden gathers together an investigator organisation that might be more accurately described as an angry mob, and leads a raid on the Curwen farm in Pawtuxet. Expect lots of sinister chants, indescribable odours, and beams of light shooting into the sky for some reason.

We’re back and we’re digging through our family tree. Or should that be digging up our family tree? Either way, we dig it. While The Case of Charles Dexter Ward doesn’t precisely advocate for raising the dead, it doesn’t make it look wholly unappealing either. Just remember to store your essential saltes in a waterproof container. Tupperware is perfect. We don’t want to be messing around with ye liveliest awfulness again. It took ages to get the stains out of the carpet last time!

Main Topic: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward part 1

We are beginning our investigation into The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, which will run for five episodes. This is Lovecraft’s longest work, perhaps more deserving of the description “novel” than At the Mountains of Madness or The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Despite this, it is arguably the most overlooked of Lovecraft’s major works. A shame, as this represents Lovecraft at his most Gothic, weaving a surprisingly subtle tale of witchcraft, necromancy, and dark family secrets.

As ever, we start out by discussing the origins and influences of the tale, before picking the story itself apart in search of gaming inspiration. We plan to conclude this run of episodes with a look into the various adaptations of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
