Here's the premier episode of my new podcast, WarNotes: A Conflict Podcast and I am introducing the first series of 'casts I will do on base-lining problems and offering solutions to the immense military incompetence, malfeasance and rank stupidity that informs so much of contemporary Western military history.
In the companion Chasing Ghosts podcast I produce, I am often scolded on being so overwhelmingly negative in my portrait of America and the west fighting the other conflicts, irregular warfare, historically and contemporaneously so bloody badly. So while I will seek to lighten the mood a tad there (especially with holidays approaching).

In this new venture, I want to expand my portfolio of investigation and elucidation on war in the broader scope. I want to leave the more arcane and less well-known milieu of the other warfare to examine conventional war and the emerging tableau of near-peer and peer fighting that I am dead certain will raise its bloody hand in this century because humans simply can't help themselves.

I will paint a dim and shabby picture of the state of American and western arms in this chapter but I want to take a deep dive in the succeeding episodes of what America can do to create a more effective military in the remainder o the 21st century; maybe the defense intellectuals and personnel at the Pentagon and the halls of western military power can pause to reassess, re-frame and find a more realistic means to exercise martial power.

When facing any issue in society, it’s important to ask which group of people have the knowledge to improve the situation and the incentive to make such changes arise. The most well-meaning people in society cannot “solve” poverty or ignorance if they themselves do not understand why some people and nations are wealthy and others are not.

Even if one does claim to have the knowledge necessary, say, to “bring democracy to Libya,” does he have an incentive to make sure that such a thing is done without massive long-term harm to civilians? Politicians and voters almost are never punished for supporting bad policies, no matter how disastrous, and thus their incentive to avoid them is negligible.

What was singular in Cambodia was the all-encompassing “year zero” ambition of the Khmer Rouge. Here Communism was reduced to its essentials, as a negation of everything existing, a war of the young on the old, a social leveling of society down to equality in abject poverty and misery. Pin Yathay, a Cambodian engineer whose family was wiped out by the Khmer Rouge before he escaped and staggered on foot across the mountains to Thailand, later recalled of life in “Democratic Kampuchea,” “There were no schools, no money, no communications, no books, no courts.… [S]urveillance was constant and mutual.… [W]e were warned to be vigilant and invited to denounce friends.” Because so many children “denounced their parents, simply in order to ‘purify’ them,” “adults became wary of talking freely in the presence of children.”

I am the Smedley D. Butler Fellow for Military Affairs at the Libertarian Institute.
They asked me to comment on the recent podcast interview between Ben Shapiro and Niall Ferguson which of course, was a reaction to Darryl Cooper's (Martyrmade Podcast) recent appearance on Tucker Carlson (I don't even know if you can access the episode).

So this this may the first in a series of Flash Messages I will do to service that cause.

I find members of the academic historian cartel (even "right of center" types like Ferguson) are horrified that non-credentialed historical observers are weighing in on the consequences of war in history. I urge everyone to deprogram yourselves and listen to the rogue but right historians like Martyrmade and ProfCJ's Dangerous History podcasts to get the better and more accurate view of what actually happened in the past that shapes our present.
Here's what you must realize about war: wars are won by the least incompetent forces and the world will not be shiny and new at the conclusion but it will different.

This is an episode to examine what Churchill really did for the West after witnessing the emotional & ahistorical outbursts by the usual suspects after Darryl Cooper from the Martyrmade Podcast appeared on Tucker Carlson on 2 SEP 2024.
I am simply addressing the claims of Churchill By Cooper as "the chief villain" which I think was hyperbolic (Cooper accedes to this) because I think Churchill was one of many villains during WWII. I am a reluctant Anglophile and I think historical revisionism is a healthy reaction to triumphalist historiography in the West that has made questioning accepted narratives a scholar crime.

Lessons From 9/11:

Do not let tragedies put you in a state of mind which allows you to be manipulated into becoming the very thing you claim to oppose. Warfare is based on lies. Politicians engage in 'threat inflation' (and explicit lies), a necessary tactic to get people to put their lives on the line unnecessarily.

2. Doing nothing is better than doing something bad and counterproductive.

3. Civilians frequently have to bear the cost of decisions made by politicians (blowback), when a few politicians and contractors and soldiers benefit at the expense of their domestic population.

4. People who pay no price for being wrong or acting immorally (politicians) are more likely to act recklessly since they are coercively funded with taxation and face legal immunity with regard to killing civilians.

5. God says 'Thou Shalt Not Murder', he does not make exceptions for people born in distant geographical areas.

6. The inequality between the state and the citizenry is the most dangerous inequality in society.

7. It shouldn't take an act of terrorism for Americans to unify. Americans should be proud of the achievements of workers and entrepreneurs in the voluntary sector who raised the worlds living standards to heights never imagined by Kings or Queens of the past.
