Choral Evensong from Trinity Cathedral Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Ohio
Evensong offers a space of beauty and rest in the middle of each week. First held in the Church of England in 1549, Choral Evensong has for centuries been an evening offering sung in cathedrals and churches of the Anglican Communion. Trinity Cathedral offers weekly evensong services as the sun goes down, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evenings from October through mid-May. The service is led on alternating weeks by the Cathedral Choir and The Trinity Chamber Singers, and by the clergy of Trinity Cathedral, and we welcome guest presiders throughout the season

There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgment given. For the love of God is broader than the measure of man's mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrow of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this; there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss. If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord.

Behold, thou hast made my days as it were a span long, and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; and verily every man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? Truly my hope is even in thee. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears, consider my calling. Hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength before I go hence, and be no more seen.

Sing holy, holy to our Lord, The Lord, Almighty God, Who was and is and is to come; Sing holy, holy, Lord! Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, Rejoice on earth, ye saints below, For Christ is coming, is coming soon, For Christ is coming soon! E'en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, And night shall be no more; They need no light nor lamp nor sun, For Christ will be their All! The writing of this anthem came at a time of great stress in the Manz household. John Manz, the three-year-old son of Paul and Ruth Manz, developed a rare type of double pneumonia. The illness produced a very high fever, which required hospitalization and painful treatments to lower his temperature. It became important for Paul and Ruth to give twenty-four-hour attention as John's condition became critical. During this time Paul composed a motif and Ruth wrote a text based on the last chapter of Revelation as a way of expressing their hope and grief. John recovered and later became a Pastor in the Lutheran Church. The original dedication of the piece read, "For those who prayed for John," but the dedication was later shortened to read, "To John."

My son, in thy sickness leave off from sin, and order thy hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness. Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come; he will come and save you. Then shall the eyes of the blind be open'd, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopp'd. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be giv'n unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the Lord, and the excellency of our god. Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come; he will come and save you. O Saviour of the world, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeem'd us, save us and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, And the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me. And alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me. Sing his praise Without delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him may'st rise; That, as his death calcined thee to dust, His life may make thee gold, and much more, Just. Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part With all thy art. The cross taught all wood to resound his name Who bore the same. His stretched sinews taught all strings, what key Is best to celebrate this most high day. Consort both heart and lute, and twist a song Pleasant and long: Or since all music is but three parts vied, And multiplied; O let thy blessed Spirit bear a part, And make up our defects with his sweet art. 2. I got me flowers I got me flowers to strew thy way; I got me boughs off many a tree: But thou wast up by break of day, And brought'st thy sweets along with thee. The Sun arising in the East, Though he give light, and the East perfume; If they should offer to contest Can there be any day but this, Though many suns to shine endeavour? We count three hundred, but we miss: There is but one, and that one ever. 3. Love bade me welcome Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin. But quick-ey'd Love, observing me grow slack From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning, If I lack'd anything. "A guest," I answer'd, "worthy to be here": Love said, "You shall be he." "I the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear, I cannot look on thee." Love took my hand, and smiling did reply, "Who made the eyes but I?" "Truth, Lord, but I have marr'd them: let my shame Go where it doth deserve." "And know you not," says Love, "who bore the blame?" "My dear, then I will serve." "You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat": So I did sit and eat. 4. The Call Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Such a Way, as gives us breath: Such a Truth, as ends all strife: Such a Life, as killeth death. Come, My Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a Light, as shows a feast: Such a Feast, as mends in length: Such a Strength, as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: Such a Joy, as none can move: Such a Love, as none can part: Such a Heart, as joys in love. 5. Antiphon Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King! The heavens are not too high, His praise may thither fly: The earth is not too low, His praises there may grow. Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King! The church with Psalms must shout. No door can keep them out: But above all, the heart Must bear the longest part. Let all the world in every corner sing, My God and King! The ransomed Isaac, and his ram; the Manna, and the Paschal Lamb. Jesu Master, just and true! Our Food, and faithful Shepherd too! O let that love which thus makes thee mix with our low Mortality, lift our lean Souls, and set us up convictors of thine own full cup, coheirs of Saints. That so all may drink the same wine; and the same Way. Nor change the Pasture, but the Place to feed of Thee in thine own Face. O dear Memorial of that Death which lives still, and allows us breath! Rich, Royal food! Bountiful Bread! Whose use denies us to the dead! Live ever Bread of loves, and be my life, my soul, my surer self to me. Help Lord, my Faith, my Hope increase; and fill my portion in thy peace. Give love for life; nor let my days grow, but in new powers to thy name and praise. Rise, Royal Sion! rise and sing thy soul's kind shepherd, thy heart's King. Stretch all thy powers; call if you can harps of heaven to hands of man. This sovereign subject sits above the best ambition of thy love. Lo the Bread of Life, this day's triumphant Text provokes thy praise. The living and life-giving bread, to the great twelve distributed when Life, himself, at point to die of love, was his own Legacy. O soft self-wounding Pelican! Whose breast weeps Balm for wounded man. All this way bend thy benign flood to'a bleeding Heart that gasps for blood. That blood, whose least drops sovereign be to wash my worlds of sins from me. Come love! Come Lord! and that long day for which I languish, come away. When this dry soul those eyes shall see, and drink the unseal'd source of thee. When Glory's sun faith's shades shall chase, and for thy veil give me thy Face. Amen. Permission to podcast/stream the music in this service obtained from ONE LICENSE with license #719993-A. Download the Bulletin: https://bit.ly/Dec2022evensong The December seventh service celebrates Nicholas, Bishop of Myra also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe. His reputation evolved among the pious, as was common for early Christian saints, and his legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus ("Saint Nick") through Sinterklaas[1].The Very Rev. Bernard J Owens will officiate. Judith Eckelmeyer's Trinity Hodie Service will be sung by the Trinity Cathedral Choir. Choir: Trinity Cathedral ChoirOfficiant: The Very Rev. Bernard J. It became important for Paul and Ruth to give twenty-four hour attention as John's condition became critical. During this time Paul composed a motif and Ruth wrote a text based on the last chapter of Revelation as a way of expressing their hope and grief. John recovered and later became a Pastor in the Lutheran Church. The original dedication of the piece read, "For those who prayed for John," but the dedication was later shortened to read, "To John."Permission to podcast/stream the music in this service obtained from ONE LICENSE with license #719993-A. Charlotte Collins Reed Hymns 35, 390 Psalm 98 Responses: Plainsong Service Philip Moore: Second Service (b. 1943) Anthem My Song is Love Unkown - Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) ANTHEM: My Song is Love Unknown - Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) My song is love unknown, My Saviour's love to me, Love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake My Lord should take frail flesh and die. He came from his blest throne, Salvation to bestow: But men made strange, and none the longed for Christ would know. But O my Friend, My friend indeed who at my need his life did spend! Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then 'Crucify!' is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; Never was love dear King, never was grief like thine! This is my friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Amen.

When he understood it, he called for his friends, and told them of it. Then, said he, 'I am going to my Father's, and though with great difficulty I am got hither, yet now I do not repent me of all the trouble I have been at to arrive where I am. My sword, I give to him that shall succeed me in my pilgrimage, and my courage and skill, to him that can get it. My marks and scars I carry with me, to be a witness for me, that I have fought his bales, who now will be my rewarder.' When the day that he must go hence, was come, many accompanied him to the riverside, into which, as he went, he said, 'Death, where is thy sng?' And as he went down deeper, he said, 'Grave, where is thy victory?' So he passed over, and all the trumpets sounded for him on the other side.

Wed, 20 Apr 2022 - 264min - 297 - Choral Evensong: Tenebrae - Choral Evensong
Wednesday in Holy Week April 13, 2022; 6:00 p.m. Tenebrae The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for "darkness" or "shadows") has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evenings. Apart from the reading or chanting of the Lamentations (in which each verse is introduced by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet), the most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, the organ plays, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the hidden candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence. In the Book of Occasional Services, provision is made for Tenebrae on Wednesday evening only, in order that the proper liturgies of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday may find their place as the principal services of those days. By drawing upon material from each of the former three offices of Tenebrae, this service provides an extended meditation upon, and a prelude to, the events in our Lord's life between the Last Supper and the Resurrection. Tonight's service uses only the first of the three Nocturns of Lauds.

Featured Choral Evensong from Wednesday, April 20, 2016 Anselm, Archbishop Of Canterbury This week's Choral Evensong was sung by the Trinity Chamber Singers on April 20, 2016. We commemorated Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the homilist was the Rev. Gayle Catinella, rector (then and now) of St. John's, Youngstown. The choral music for this service came from the pen of American composers Gerre Hancock and David Conte. Dr. Hancock was Organist and Master of Choristers at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York for 33 years. His setting of the Preces and Responses typifies his gift for lyricism and harmonic warmth. Lakewood native David Conte (b. 1955) is the composer of the canticles and anthem. David studied with Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland, and is the composer of over 150 published works. He has received commissions from Chanticleer, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, the American Guild of Organists and many other organizations and performing groups. We were honored ask him to write a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis especially for us at Trinity Cathedral, and this has now joined his other published works. The anthem, "Valediction," is David's inspired setting of a poem on eternal love by the English poet-soldier Sir Philip Sydney (1554-1586), one of the notable figures of the Elizabethan age.
