true crime is a nonfiction literary, podcast, and film genre in which the author examines an actual crime and details the actions of real people. The crimes most commonly include murder; about 40 percent focus on tales of serial killers.
As much as we love listening to a celebrity interview or cultural discussion, there’s nothing quite like a true crime podcast to keep you hooked for hours on end.
There’s a reason why so many true crime series have climbed the podcast charts over the years – from the genre-defining brilliance of Serial to the unexpected twists and turns of Sweet Bobby, true crime is the genre that just keeps on giving.
True crime has never been more popular than it is today, as evidenced by the astonishing number of podcasts, TV shows, and documentaries dedicated to the genre. At its core, however, true crime is a type of nonfiction literature. From influential works like Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood (1966) to modern-day investigations such as Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (2018) or Elon Green’s Last Call (2021), such narratives are unique in the way they connect with their readers, precisely because they explore harrowing real-life events that could happen to anyone.
Want to know more about true crime? Here we define the genre, take a fascinating look at its origins, and cover some of its common themes.
The Definition of “True Crime”
It seems like the definition of true crime would be obvious: A story about a crime that actually occurred. Indeed, most true crime books explore dark and distressing subject matter, and reader discretion is advised. Granted, the first rule of true crime is that the narrative must include as many nitty-gritty facts about the case as possible: Readers expect the actual names of people involved and the correct time and place, information about what they did, and as many details of the crime and its investigation as the author can dig up.
True crime books can be about a single event, like a kidnapping. They can also be about the collective crimes of serial killers, thieves, or cult leaders. However narrow or broad the focus, the best true crime books deliver well-researched, finely written examinations of the case at hand.
But the wealth of details is just half of what makes true crime so popular with readers. The most talented true crime authors excel at presenting the facts of a case while vividly re-creating the atmosphere that surrounded the crime. They put criminals and their victims in context by establishing elements like the political climate of the day, the history of a town, or the struggles faced by a particular community. They dig into everyone’s motives, then weigh these motives against the actions and developments they document. They re-create dialogue as faithfully as possible, although of course sometimes it’s necessary to take artistic liberties.
In other words, the most popular true crime authors transport readers to the scene of the crime, with all senses fully engaged. Without an author’s narrative talents, the details of the crime would simply read like a legal report.

In Berryville, Arkansas, the case of Wayne Parker sent shockwaves through the community. Parker was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenager, a crime that not only devastated the victim and their family but also raised questions about the handling of justice in this small town. Despite several protection and no-contact orders issued against him, Parker repeatedly violated these orders without immediate consequences, fueling public outrage.
Allegations emerged that local law enforcement may have shielded Parker from harsher penalties, prompting calls for reform and greater accountability within the justice system.
This case has since become a focal point for discussions on legal ethics, community safety, and the need for transparency in law enforcement practices.

Around 8:45 PM on August 27, 2023, Patrolman Kevin Garrity with the Highland Park Police Department was alerted by pedestrians to a woman asleep behind the wheel of a 2011 Acura on Route 27 (Raritan Avenue) near the intersection with S Sixth Avenue. Headquarters dispatched a call that a driver was asleep behind the wheel, and he radioed headquarters to inform them that he was already on location with the vehicle. He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop made contact with the driver.
The driver, later identified as Brittany, awakened after a few minutes. Patrolman Sica opened the door on the other side to put the vehicle in park. Patrolman Garrity detected the odor of alcohol as he was speaking with her and he asked her how much she had to drink. She responded by saying “not too much.” Brittany told the officer that she was coming from Atlantic Highlands and admitted to having a “vodka club” before operating a motor vehicle. Based on the indicators of impairment, Brittany was asked to perform field sobriety exercises.
Patrolman Garrity started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Patrolman Garrity observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn Test. During the Walk and Turn test, Brittany did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise they attempted was the One Leg Stand test, and Brittany failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and stared at the officer while counting instead of looking at her foot.
Based on her falling asleep behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier, and her inability to complete the field sobriety exercises, Brittany was placed under arrest. After she was placed under arrest, her vehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law. Patrolman Garrity transported Brittany to the Highland Park Police Department for further processing. At the station, he read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.13%, which was more than the legal limit of 0.08%.
After they were finished processing Brittany, she was released to a sober adult pending her court appearance in the Highland Park Borough Court on September 13, 2023 after he signed the Potential Liability Warning on Brittany’s behalf. Patrolman Garrity issued Brittany the following citations: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, failure to wear seat belt, obstructing passage of other vehicles, no liability insurance on motor vehicle, failure to notify DMV of address change, and touring privileges
Court records indicate that on April 25, 2024, Brittany was found guilty of operating under the influence. As a result of being found guilty, she had to use an ignition interlock device for 3 months, spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, and pay a total of $740 in fines. The other 6 citations were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Brittany had previously been arrested for DWI in East Brunswick, NJ on March 25, 2023. She was later ticketed for Careless Driving in Shrewsbury, New Jersey on November 7, 2023.

He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop and the driver pulled over near the exit ramp to US 202&206. He informed dispatch and made contact with the driver, who was identified as Kelsey.
Shortly afterwards, Officer Monika Thiel arrived on scene to assist. As Officer Gallo began to interact with Kelsey, he noticed signs signs of impairment. She initially denied consuming any alcohol before operating a motor vehicle, but she would later admit to having a glass of wine earlier. Based on their suspicion of impairment, Kelsey was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. Officers Noah Allatt and Arturo Gonzales also arrived on scene to assist.
Officer Allatt started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn Test. On June 26, 2024 around 1:55 PM, Patrolwoman Kristin Altimari with the Red Bank Police Department observed a driver of a 2012 Toyota Corolla using his phone while driving on W Front Street in the vicinity of Club Court. She initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who was later identified as 26-year-old Brian Lee. She asked for his driver’s license, but he initially provided her with a credit card instead. She told him that he was using a wireless device, driving without his seat belt, and he had a tail light that was not working.
As she was speaking with Brian, she detected the odor of alcohol. Based on her suspicion of impairment, Brian was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. The field sobriety exercises included the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, Walk and Turn test, and One Leg Stand test. He was unable to perform these tests in a satisfactory manner.
Based on his motor vehicle infractions, the indicators of impairment, and his inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Brian was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. After he was placed under arrest, his vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. Another officer transported Brian to the Red Bank Police Department for further processing.
At the station, he was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and he agreed to submit breath samples for testing. His Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.34% BAC, which was more than 4 times the legal limit of 0.08%. He was issued the following traffic tickets: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, use of hand-held wireless telephones, failure to wear seat belt, and maintenance of lamps.

On May 16, 2024 around 1:11 AM, Officer Aaron Font with the Hoboken Police Department observed a 2024 Hyundai Tucson fail to stop at a stop sign in the vicinity of 12th Street and Madison Street. He initiated a motor vehicle stop at 1200 Monroe Street. He made contact with the driver, later identified as 27-year-old Nicholas, and detected the odor of alcohol as he was speaking with him.
He asked Nicholas if he had been drinking, and he acknowledged consuming alcohol in Jersey City earlier that evening. Officers Joshua Campoverde and Shawn Sodora arrived on scene to assist shortly afterwards. Officer Font also requested an officer who was certified in field sobriety exercises to respond, and Officer Daniela Simone also arrived on scene.
Officer Simone started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, followed by the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand tests. Nicholas failed to perform the field sobriety exercises in a satisfactory manner. Based on his erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, his admission to consuming alcohol, and his inability to perform the field sobriety exercises in a satisfactory manner, Nicholas was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.
He was transported to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. Officer Simone administered the breathalyzer test, and the results indicated a BAC of 0.16%, which is double the legal limit of 0.08%. On March 19, 2024 around10:43, dispatch received a call about an unknown individual who was knocking the door of an apartment building in which she did not reside. Around 11:08 PM, a second call came in to inform them that a female they did not know had entered an apartment unit on the second floor of the same building. Officer Rose Kanan responded to the apartment building and noticed that the door was open. She entered the apartment and walked up to the second floor, where she was met with 52-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son.
Officer Montalvo, Officer Quinn, and Sergeant Falco all arrived on scene shortly afterwards. The woman told the officers that the other woman had entered her son’s room. Officers Kanan and Montalvo guided the other woman outside of the apartment so they could talk to her in the hallway. During the course of the investigation, they determined that she was a 31-year-old woman who lived in another apartment building nearby in Hoboken.
The woman seemed intoxicated and she told the officers that she had been at a few bars in Hoboken earlier that evening. However, she was unable to provide the address of the building that she was in. After determining that she did not reside inside that building, Officer Kanan placed her under arrest for trespassing. After she was escorted to the patrol car, Officers Tamborra and Quinn spoke with the residents of the unit. The woman who rented the unit told the officers that she wanted to sign a complaint against the other woman who was trespassing inside her apartment. #bodycam#cops#police#policebodycam

On June 23, 2023 around 7:09 PM, Officer Bradley Pindyck with the Fair Lawn Police Department was initially dispatched to the area of Debruin Drive on a report of an unresponsive female behind the wheel of a 2015 Toyota Rav4. The vehicle was not there when he arrived, but he eventually located a vehicle matching this description in the area of Goldblatt Terrace and Saddle River Road. He activated his lights to initiate a traffic as Officers Lozaia and Castor arrived to assist.
Officer Pindyck made contact with the woman behind the wheel of the car to awaken her, and he instructed her to put the car in park and turn off the ignition. As he was speaking with the woman, who was later identified as Patricia, he detected the odor of alcohol and noticed other signs of impairment. Patricia was then instructed to exit the vehicle and asked to perform field sobriety exercises.
Officer Pindyck started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Patricia continued to stare ahead straight as the officer moved his finger from side to side, so the test was unable to be completed. The second exercise they attempted was the Walk and Turn test, but Patricia seemed to be unable to put on her shoes and told the officer that she did not want to do any tests. Based on her sleeping in her vehicle, her slurred speech, her lack of balance, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Patricia was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.
After she was placed under arrest, Patricia was transported to the Fair Lawn Police Department for further processing. Court records indicate that on March 22, 2023, Patricia had previously been arrested for DWI in Ramsey, New Jersey as well. Officer Pindyck read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and asked her to submit breath samples, but Patricia gave an ambiguous answer and was eventually charged a refusal to submit breath samples. Patricia issued the following traffic tickets: Operating under the influence, consent to take samples of breath, and reckless driving.

Around 12:45 PM on June 12, 2024, Officer Brandon Fitzgibbons with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ACME on 614 Clinton Street. He entered the store and met with the floor manager as well as the scanning coordinator. Officer Tyrone Huggins arrived shortly afterwards, and store employees informed them that around 11:00 AM, a woman entered their store, put body wash and soaps inside a bag, and left the store without paying. Later at around 12:35 PM, a man entered the store and attempted to leave without paying for 6 bottles of liquor before he was stopped by store employees. At that time, the man was allowed to leave the store as long as he handed them the liquor.
After the man left the store, an employee of the store spotted him walking away with the same woman who matched the description from the earlier shoplifting incident. Based on this connection, store employees called the Hoboken Police. The officers walked upstairs to the office so they could review the surveillance footage. Detective Michael Losurdo arrived shortly afterwards and looked through the surveillance footage. Store employees provided the officers with 2 itemized printouts estimating the value of the shoplifted goods. They estimated that the woman had stolen $487.89 worth of items, while the man had attempted to steal 6 bottles of liquor worth a total of $197.94.
Based on their descriptions, other officers patrolled the vicinity of the store in an attempt to locate the suspects matching that description. As the officers were speaking with store employees, Sergeant Francisco Rosa and Officers Cuevas and Figueroa spotted a male and a female in Church Square Park who both matched the descriptions provided by store employees. The officers detained both individuals as they investigated this incident, and they identified the female as 26-year-old Lindsey Caverly while the male was identified as 25-year-old Joseph Ortiz. Lindsey told the officer that she was homeless and that she had come to Hoboken to tour the shelter.
Both individuals were eventually placed under arrest and transported separately to the Hoboken Police Department. A search of court records indicate that Lindsey has been arrested multiple times in the past, including for DWI, possession, and shoplifting. Charges were filed against both the male and female, and they were subsequently transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

On December 6, 2022 around 3:42 PM, Officer Jeffrey Williams with the Pasippany-Troy Hills Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident in the area of Troy Road and Mazdabrook Road. The accident involved a 2022 BMW 740, a 2012 Chevy Equinox, and a 2015 school bus. The crash report states that the school bus was driving south on Baldwin Road and stopped at an intersection to turn left onto Troy Road. Around this time, the BMW driver veered to the left, struck the school bus before striking a guardrail, and bounced off the guardrail and struck the Chevy Equinox head-on. The school bus had 10 children on board, but none of them were injured.
As Officer Williams arrived on scene, he was informed that a female in a gray jacket had left the scene and walked towards Care One. He quickly located the female nearby, who was identified as Cristin, and he brought her back to the accident scene. He instructed her to sit in his patrol car as the officers investigated the accident. As he was speaking her, he detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Cristin admitted to consuming vodka before driving. After Officer Williams interviewed the driver of the school bus as well as the driver of the Chevy Equinox, he informed the other officers that this was probably going to be a DWI case.
Since it was raining, Officer Williams planned to transport Cristin back to the Parsippany-Troy Hills Police Department and perform field sobriety exercises in the sally port. However, Sergeant Carlos Silva instructed him to perform the exercises on scene. As Officer Williams was speaking with the other officers, Captain John Wieners was watching over Cristin and she told him that she was currently going through a divorce. Officer Williams returned to his patrol car transported Cristin to a safe place to perform the field sobriety exercises as Captain Wieners assisted.
The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and Officer Williams observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test and Cristin did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and failed to keep her hands at her sides. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Cristin failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while putting her foot down multiple times.
Based on the car accident, the odor of alcohol, her admission to drinking, and her inability to perform the field sobriety exercises adequately, she was placed under arrest for DWI. Officer Williams transported her to the Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Police Department for processing. Cristin was read Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and she agreed to submit breath samples. Officer Van Orden administered the machine and Cristin’s Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.15%, which was nearly double the legal limit of 0.08%.
Cristin was eventually released pending her court appearance at the Parsippany Municipal Court on December 15, 2022. She was issued the following summonses: Operating under the influence (39:4-50), reckless driving (39:4-96), and traffic on marked lanes (39:4-88)
Court records indicate that on June 1, 2023, Cristin pleaded guilty to operating under the influence and she had to pay a total of $740 in fines, spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, and use an ignition interlock device for 3 months. The other 2 citations were dismissed as a result of the plea agreement.

On December 10, 2022 around 1:59 AM, Officer Scott Gaston with the Montvale Police Department observed a 2016 Mercedes-Benz swerving across the double yellow line while driving northbound on N Kinderkamack Road. As a result of these driving patterns, he activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop in front of 133 N Kinderkamack Road, just before the New York state line. He made contact with the driver, who was identified as Erika, and he asked her where she was coming from.
Erika told Officer Gaston that she was headed her home in New York and that she was coming from The Cornerstone, a popular bar in Hillsdale, New Jersey. Erika told the officer that she consumed 1 beer earlier that evening before operating a motor vehicle, but she would later admit to probably consuming 2 beers. She also stated that she worked as a bartender at a different restaurant in Westwood, New Jersey before heading over to The Cornerstone. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Officer Gaston waited for Officer DiLauri to arrive on scene before asking her to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.
To initially assess her level of impairment, he asked Erika to recite the alphabet from “G” to “S,” but she failed to follow his instructions and continued past the letter “S.” Erika was then asked to count backwards from 89 to 69, but Erika continued counting past 69 until Officer Gaston stopped her at 63.
Officer DiLauri then administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, which was administered by Officer Gaston. During the Walk and Turn test, Erika did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Erika failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while not counting as instructed.
Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her admission to drinking, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Erika was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. Her vehicle was searched incident to arrest and she was transported to the Montvale Police Department for further processing. Officer Maleszewski arrived on scene and stayed with the vehicle until it was towed for a mandatory 12-hour impound as required by John’s Law.
At the Montvale Police Department, Erika was searched in more detail by Officer Pane with the River Vale Police Department. Officer Gaston read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Officer DiLauri operated the machine, and her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.13%, which was more than the limit of 0.08%.
After she was processed, Erika was released to a sober adult pending her court appearance in the Pascack Joing Municipal Court after she signed the Potential Liability Warning form on her behalf. Officer Gaston issued her the following summonses: Operating under the influence, careless driving, traffic on marked lanes, and failure to possess driver insurance card
Court records indicate that on April 19, 2023, Erika pleaded guilty to operating under the influence and she was fined a total of $640. She was also required to use an ignition interlock device for 3 months and spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center. The other 3 citations were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Around 2:14 AM on June 14, 2024, Sergeant Richard Gill and Patrolmen Jordan Barham, Christopher Marlow, and Donald Picciano with the Westfield Police Department were dispatched to the scene a motor vehicle accident involving a 2024 Hyundai Elantra striking a parked 2008 Nissan Rogue on West South Avenue. When Patrolman Barham arrived on scene, he observed that the Hyundai had sustained severe front-end damages and there was airbag deployment. Due to the impact of the crash, the Nissan Rogue moved approximately 20 feet from its initial position after it was struck by the eastbound Hyundai.
The driver was identified as Crystal Beverly, and she was visibly irate and shouting at the officers. Patrolman Barham observed indicators of impairment. Sergeant Gill made numerous attempts to deescalate the situation, but Crystal was unable to answer the officers’ questions and continued to behave in a belligerent manner. She first struck Sergeant Gill with her phone before throwing it on the ground. Sergeant Gill responded by giving her a warning, but she continued yelling at him.
After continuing to yell at the officers, Crystal eventually struck Sergeant Gill in the chest with a closed fist. As soon as he was struck, Beverly was guided to the ground and handcuffed. After Crystal was placed in the car, she told another officer that she was at Hugo’s Lounge in Plainfield earlier that evening and that she was headed home to Elizabeth. She admitted to consuming alcohol and smoking before operating a motor vehicle.
Based on her uncooperativeness, field sobriety exercises were not attempted. Patrolman Picciano transported Crystal to the Westfield Police Department as the other officers remained on scene and assessed the damages resulting from the crash. Hvehicle was impounded for a 12-hour hold according to John’s Law and the Nissan Rogue had to be towed from the scene as well. At the station, she was searched by Lieutenant Maloney and evaluated by the Westfield Rescue Squad. She indicated that she wished to be transported to the hospital, and she was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, NJ.
Crystal was treated at the hospital and subsequently transported back to the Westfield Police Department. It was decided that Sergeant Gill would later submit a subpoena for medical records regarding blood testing and toxicology reports. Once she was back at the Westfield Police Department, she was read her Miranda warnings as well as the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators.
She agreed to submit samples of her breath for testing, and her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.02%. However, the Alcotest was administered around 7:29 AM, which was more than 5 hours following the crash. Based on the circumstances, a DRE was called and Officer Timothy Stasyshyn with the Mountainside Police Department responded there. Officer Stasyshyn stated in his opinion that Crystal was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis and unable to operate a motor vehicle safely.
After they were finished processing Crystal, she was released to her friend pending her court appearance in the Westfield Municipal Court on June 26, 2024 after he signed the Potential Liability Warning on Crystal’s behalf. She was issued the following traffic citations: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane
She was also issued the following criminal summonses: Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer (2C:12-1B(5)(A)), Obstructing the Administration of the Law (2C:29-1A), and Resisting Arrest (2C:29-2A(1)).

Around 11:28 PM on November 1, 2023, Patrolman Jacob Paris with the Magnolia Police Department observed the driver of a 1996 Toyota Corolla swerving on White Horse Pike in the vicinity of Coopertown Road as the vehicle was headed southbound. As he followed the vehicle, the driver continued to swerve and nearly struck a bus. He activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop and the driver pulled over on White Horse Pike near Park Avenue in the neighboring town of Somerdale.
The driver was identified as 20-year-old Jianna, and Patrolman Paris told he observed her swerving across lanes. Jianna told the officer that she did not have a valid driver’s license as Patrolman Paris detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. She told the officer that they were headed to her boyfriend’s mother’s house and initially denied consuming any alcohol before operating a motor vehicle. However, she would later admit to taking shots of Bacardi earlier that evening.
Based on the officers’ suspicion of impairment, Jianna was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises after Patrolman Brick Wilce arrived on scene. The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Patrolman Wilce observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Jianna failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Jianna failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and counted in an incorrect sequence. The final exercise was the recitation of the alphabet from “C” to “Y” and Jianna failed to complete this test adequately.
Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol before driving, and her inability to adequately complete the field sobriety exercises, Patrolman Paris placed Jianna under arrest for driving under the influence. The vehicle that she had been driving was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. She was transported to the Magnolia Police Department for further processing.
At the Magnolia Police Department, Jianna was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and agreed to submit breath samples for testing. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.12%, which was above legal limit of 0.08% and 12 times New Jersey’s legal limit of 0.01% for drivers under 21 years of age. After the officers were finished with their paperwork, Jianna eventually released to a sober adult after she signed the Potential Liability Warning Form on Jianna’s behalf. She was issued the following summonses: Operating under the influence, operating a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol underage, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to wear seat belt, driving without a license, failure to have inspection, failure to possess driver insurance card, traffic on marked lanes, and traffic on marked lanes – unsafe lane change
Court records indicate that on May 14, 2024, Jianna was found guilty of operating under the influence and failure to possess driver insurance card. As a result of being found guilty, Jianna’s had to use an ignition interlock device for 3 months, spend 12 hours at an intoxicated driver resource center, and pay a total of $723 in fines. The other 8 citations were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Around 11:37 PM on August 1, 2024, Patrolman Timothy Donovan with the Westfield Police Department was on patrol in the vicinity of East South Avenue and Central Avenue when he observed a white 2016 BMW 2-door running a red light while going southbound on Central Avenue. The driver continued onto Ross Place and he activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop on Ross Place near the intersection with Carleton Road, but the driver failed to pull over initially. Patrolman Dononvan exited his patrol car and advised her to not move the vehicle when it was stopped in front of a residential address, but she disregarded his command and pulled into the driveway. After she stopped behind the residence, Patrolman Donovan made contact with the driver and ordered her to turn off the car and hand him her documents.
Shortly afterwards, Sergeant Gill and Patrolmen Jordan Barham, Christopher Marlow, and Donald Picciano responded to the scene to assist. The driver, later identified as Klara, was unable to provide all her documents and Patrolman Donovan detected the odor of alcohol. When they arrived on scene, they observed that a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE had sustained extensive damages around the entire exterior of the vehicle. Patrolman Giordano made contact with the driver, who was later identified as Ammara Awan. Her 16-year-old male passenger had exited the vehicle by the time the officers arrived.
Their investigation would later reveal that her vehicle was traveling southbound on Southern Boulevard when her vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and a portion of a tree at the same time, and then proceeded to strike a mailbox before striking another masonry mailbox. First responders with the Chatham Township Fire Department were called to the scene to extricate Ammara from the vehicle. Both the officers as well as the first responders observed indicators of impairment, and Sergeant Anderson located a broken bottle of Casamigos tequila on the road.
After first responders extricated Ammara, she was transported to Morristown Medical Center for further evaluation. Ammara was asked to consent to providing a blood sample for testing, but she declined. Given the severity of the crash, Sergeant Anderson contacted Supervising Assistant Prosecutor (SAP) Reema Kareer, and she indicated that they would apply for a warrant. They were connected with Superior Court Judge David J. Weaver, and he granted the warrant at 11:00 PM. Ammara’s blood was drawn in the hospital at 11:58 PM in the presence of Patrolman Giordano. The blood test results from September 28, 2023 indicate the following: 0.140% (g/100mL) ethyl alcohol at a coverage probability of 99%.
Ammara was released from the hospital on September 12th around 8:06 AM. Patrolman Colm Dougherty then transported her to the Chatham Township Police Department.
