After starting out with humble beginnings singing in their father’s church in West Oakland, CA, The Pointer Sisters went on to achieve worldwide success and a place in pop music history.

The eldest sister, and only remaining member of the original group, Ruth Pointer, continues to perform the music of The Pointer Sisters all over the globe with her daughter, Issa Pointer, and granddaughter, Sadako Pointer. What an absolute thrill it was to speak to this talented trailblazer. We laughed so much, especially when she caught me out on an on-air oopsie I made yeeeaaarrrs ago, and Ruth was listening!

Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton was a young London stockbroker who visited Prague in December of 1938 where he discovers a large population of refugees fleeing the Nazis - and he knew he must do something, at least for the children. 

Back in London, Nick spent months arranging for foster families, passports, and documentation that would usher hundreds of children to safety... 669 children! 50 years later his story came to light in a remarkable way. Waaaay back in November of 2021 I interviewed a delightful British author/illustrator named Charlie Mackesy. Charlie had written a book that the entire world had fallen in love with; "The Boy, the mole, the fox, and the Horse." Its message was one of hope, compassion, and above all, kindness.

I was so thrilled last month when the animated film - that Charlie was hard at work on when we spoke - took home an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards. Several million people, myself included, I fell in love with today's podcast guest around the same time - when a poem he wrote and published to his Facebook page went viral. Stephen Siller, a young firefighter from Staten Island was one of thousands of lives lost while trying to save others from the collapsing twin towers. A soft-spoken and deeply insightful man, Isaac tells me how the story honors his grandmother, who he felt was largely invisible figure during the very formative years of his youth. Minari, a common plant grown abundantly in their native Korea, symbolizes the restorative influence his grandmother had on his family... Country music is part romance, part mystery, and part yearning for a simpler time. Lee Brice brings that all to the table - and to our podcast today - with "Hey World" his 5th studio album. Today's guest on LOVE SOMEONE, Kevin Finch, of BIG TABLE is serving up some food for thought and reminding us that a healthy dose of compassion feeds the soul.

A once upon a time, pastor-by-day and food critic-by-night, Kevin, who spent a lot of time ministering to people, sensed a very great great need in the service industry - if you combine food service and hotel workers, this sector far exceeds any other organized work force in America. It's made up of some of the most vulnerable, at-risk people in our society. Low pay, long hours, crazy shifts, covered by at-risk teens, single parents, immigrant populations, and those who have served time... Barely living paycheck-to-paycheck with no guaranteed hours or benefits. It's a population plagued by addictions and circumstances beyond the comprehension of most of us who go out to dinner or on a vacation.

Kevin is working to fix this, flipping the script in a completely novel way. He's setting up his BIG TABLE (it's real and seats 48!) in communities like his home town of Spokane, Seattle and San Diego - and hoping to be in 10 cities across the country in 10 years. He serves those who serve us at his pop-up underground restaurant - and in daily conversations over cups of coffee. Whether it's much need transportation, supplies for a new baby, or educational assistance, you never know what might be dished up by BIG TABLE. The novel coronavirus pandemic brought confusion and frustration to the world. The question, "What do we do now" echoed around the globe. Jon Bon Jovi answered that question, in action, word, and song. "When you can't do what you do, do what you can." was the caption to an instagram shot of him washing dishes at JB's Soul Kitchen, a community restaurant where "all are welcome, and locally-sourced ingredients, dignity, and respect are always on the menu." Those words became the chorus to another Bon Jovi anthem, one that is sorely needed right now, providing purpose and passion at a time of great need.

Jon joins me today to talk about the single, "Do What You Can", and his upcoming album, "Bon Jovi 2020" set for an October release. The band decided not to just postpone their world tour, but to cancel it altogether and refund ticket purchases, because, as he said, "People need money in their pockets right now."
