Jackie O was deep into a years-long addiction to pills and alcohol until one phone call changed her life.

There’s a reason Jackie O kept her addiction to pain medication and alcohol a secret for so long: shame. But now, she wants to share her story of recovery and healing with the world and to help other people get the help they need - and so she’s sharing the hard truths of the years she spent struggling.

Jackie and her best friend Gemma sit down for a searingly honest conversation with Mia Freedman about how Jackie found herself at her low point and finally had to admit her addiction to Gemma - and how Gemma got Jackie to rehab without the press finding out.

This is a story about addiction and recovery, but it’s also a story of the life-saving quality of friendship.

Ellie Sedgwick is a body-positive, nude photographer who founded Comfortable In My Skin, a movement empowering people to love the skin they’re in. But, Ellie hasn’t always felt comfortable with her own vulva - she’s gone from being scared to wear swimmers… to considering labiaplasty… to driving around the country to photograph other women’s vulvas for her book, ‘Flip Through My Flaps’.

Trad Wives like Hannah Neeleman and her Ballerina Farm empire have captured our imagination - and divided our opinions.

Trad Wives are an Instagram phenomenon using highly-produced content to promote traditional family values - specifically, the idea that women would be happier if they stayed home and served their husbands and children, trading in a life of career-focused grind culture for a life of content domesticity - and nobody sells this idea better than Hannah Neeleman.

Megan Agnew is a journalist for the Times UK and she managed to spend a day with Hannah, her husband Daniel and their eight children on the notoriously hard to penetrate Ballerina Farm - she saw behind the scenes…and what she saw is very different than what we see on Instagram.

Megan Agnew’s article went viral and sparked a million think pieces and spurred some very strong reactions…including from the Neelemans themselves.

So what is behind the Trad Wife movement - and is it just harmless entrepreneurship, or is there a darker, more serious ideology behind it?

Sometimes, a story can save a life. This is one of those stories.

Anna Martin is a recovering gambling addict who, as you’ll hear, almost lost her life to this insidious industry.

Anna gambled in the shadows. She didn’t want anyone to know about her gambling habits, or the risks she was taking, or just how bad it got…to the point where she almost lost her life.

Shame and secrecy are killers. And gambling is shrouded in shame and secrecy. So it’s no small thing for Anna to share her story with No Filter.

When Suzanne Heywood and her little brother were told by their parents that they’d be leaving the UK, leaving school, leaving their friends and their dog to go and sail around the world for three years…Suzanne had her doubts - but like so many little girls, she trusted her father - he was her hero.

For many years Paulina Porizkova was the most recognized face in fashion & beauty - from her iconic Sports Illustrated cover to being the face of Estee Lauder. When she married rock star Ric Ocastek from the iconic band, The Cars. From the outside looking in, it seemed like she was living the dream.

But how Hugo and Spencer came to be in the world is a very unique and unusual story: their grandmother Jasmina and their aunt Sophie were actually - also - their surrogate mothers.

Why did Jasmina decide to be a surrogate for her daughter…at 52 years old? And how did her pregnancy go? How did she feel about the baby? How does it work now? What will they tell the boys when they're older? And - how did this decision come about to begin with?

This is a story about the great love that can emerge from great loss, and of great sacrifice and generosity, of motherhood and grandmotherhood - really, this is a love story like no other we’ve heard before.

Writer and activist, Africa Brooke, used to call people out on the internet all the time - because this is what the culture wars told her she needed to do.

On Halloween morning, Charlotte Cowles - an Ivy League educated journalist and mother of a two-year old son - received a life-altering phone call from a government agent who informed her that she had 22 bank accounts, nine vehicles and four properties registered in her name, and that she’d wired more than $3 million to Jamaica and Iraq, and that a car had been rented in her name that had been linked to drug trafficking in New Mexico…and that she had warrants out for her arrest.

As you will hear in this heart-stopping episode of No Filter, the government agent turned out to be a scammer - and the tactics he used against Charlotte amounted to all-out psychological warfare. And it worked.

Lauren Jackson is the GOAT in Australian women's basketball. Her last Olympic games was in 2012 and she retired from the sport in 2016 after a routine leg wax while recovering from an ACL injury went bad.

Then, in 2022, aged 41, she made a comeback to the sport and now at 43 she is part of the team who qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Patric Gagne is not what most people picture when they hear the word ‘sociopath’. For example, she’s married and has two children. She’s a functioning member of society. She has friends.

Sociopaths tend to lie, break laws, act impulsively and they have little regard for their own safety because they simply don’t have fear or guilt. All these things are true for Patric.

In this conversation Patric talks to Mia Freedman about the emotions she doesn't feel, the signs that popped up when she was a child and what it's like being friends with a sociopath.

In the second episode of our 3-part No FIlter mini-series featuring interviews with Olympians before they head to Paris to compete, Matilda's star Katrina Gorry opens up to guest host Libby Trickett in a way that takes them both by surprise.

Gorry captured our hearts at the Women’s World Cup in 2023- as did her two-year-old daughter Harper. Coming back to work after having a baby is difficult for any parent, particularly when your job involves playing for your country. Still, Katrina had the highest number of tackles of any player and covered the most ground.
Now Katrina and her partner Clara Markstedt are expecting another baby, just in time for the Paris Olympics.

The first time Keri Kitay’s mother Terry forgot where she parked her car, she was surprised and annoyed. But she wasn’t alarmed. It wasn’t until years later that she would realise it was one of the first signs of early onset Alzheimers which would slowly dismantle her mother’s life.

There are around 15 Australians per 1,000 living with dementia and a tiny percentage of those are relatively young.

This is the story of one person and the way her family said their long goodbye.

When Vanessa Low was 15, she accidentally stumbled off an overcrowded platform and was hit by a train. She lost both her legs around the knee, broke multiple other bones and was placed in a coma.  A couple years later she was competing internationally.

She’s now a Paralympic gold and silver medallist, six-time World Championship medallist and is the reigning world record holder in the women’s long jump T61.

Vanessa Low's preparation for the Paris Paralympics is a little different as she's now the mother to an almost-two-year-old, Matteo. Vanessa doesn't fight change, she embraces it.

Rowan Mangan never expected to be part of a throuple. Neither did her two partners, Martha Beck and Karen Gerdes who had been together for several decades before Rowan came into their lives.

James Foley’s death was unimaginable. He was a journalist held hostage by ISIS for two years in Syria and killed in 2014 as a threat to America. Footage of him wearing an orange jumpsuit, forcibly reading a message before being beheaded was posted to Twitter. How far would you go to help your parents if they were in trouble?

Nicho Hynes is a loyal son and has devoted himself to his mum in unfathomable ways after she was involved in a high profile drugs case.  The NRL star is well known as a famous football player but he’s recently begun to receive acclaim for the way he’s being so candid about mental health. Nicho has endured some huge challenges with his mum going in and out of jail as he grew up and it’s shaped the man he is and the intense love and admiration he has for his mother.

Guest host Kate Langbroek spoke to Nicho about what really happens when you have to choose between career and a family who really need you.

In 1991, Poppy King launched a range of seven matt lipsticks, named after the seven deadly sins. She was 19 years old.

Within three years, the company had grown to be one of the biggest cosmetic companies in Australia. In 1995 she received the Young Australian Of The Year award and that year the company made a profit of $6.5 million.
A few years later though, Poppy shut it down and moved to the US.
Poppy has always been a leader, not a follower and she’s always been an original thinker in a way that has not necessarily made it easy for her.

Which is what makes her next move so unexpected.

This isn’t just another ghost story. This one has far too many creepy and strange coincidences.

Journalist Tristan Redman had unexplained things happen in his childhood bedroom. And he wasn’t the only one. There was another family, who lived in the same house, who had similar stories. The house really did seem… well… haunted. Then things got even weirder.

On the 12th of September, 2018, Australian Academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert was arrested at Tehran’s International Airport in Iran. She spent 804 days incarcerated in Tehran’s Evin and Qarchak prison for espionage, a crime she never committed.

The Believe in Magic charity was set up by a 16 year old girl and her mother. Megan and Jean’s charity helped grant wishes to sick children in a make-a-wish sort of way and some kids, including Megan even got to meet One Direction members.

The charity was founded because Megan was diagnosed with a rare brain condition and a few years later a brain tumour.

A group of internet sleuths became suspicious after Jean tried to raise money for an emergency trip to see a doctor overseas.

Brendan Watkins was eight years old when he and his brother were told they were adopted from different families. He spent decades  trying to track down his biological mother and father. 

It wasn’t until his 29th birthday he requested his original birth certificate and from that he was told his mother was a nun.

In the early 1990s, 21-year-old Paul Denyer terrorised the Victorian suburb of Frankston. He preyed on the local women; stalking, abducting, and eventually murdering three young victims.

Their names were Elizabeth Stevens, Deborah Fream, and Natalie Russell.

David Limbrick was Natalie Russell’s boyfriend at the time. He was just 19 when Natalie was found, and his life was forever changed. David went on to become a member of the Victorian Parliament, representing the suburb of Frankston. So in 2021, when Paul Denyer applied for parole for a 2023 release, David, along with other family members of the victims started a very public campaign. This is his story…

Lisa Messenger always thought she’d be an entrepreneur, not a mother. 

But one day, after 15 years of running multiple businesses including publishing company The Messenger Group and later Collective Hub, Lisa decided it was time to try. But what happened next wasn’t easy. 

Over 8 years, Lisa had 16 rounds of IVF and spent over $500,000 trying to conceive. She even came close to adopting. 

But it wasn’t until her friend Sarah Megginson offered to help that she had a chance.

If the name Megan Phelps-Roper doesn’t immediately ring a bell for you, her former church and home might - the incredibly controversial and almost universally despised Westboro Baptist Church. Megan was raised in the church and from just 5 years of age, was on the picket line day and night hoping to save those her family believe needed to be saved. 

10 years ago, Megan left the church. And she’s since made a living by using her own example of how her belief system could be challenged to show the power of changing people’s minds through conversations in good faith. It is with deep sadness and shock today we learnt about the passing of Jock Zonfrillo.

The chef, best-selling author, and philanthropist was best known in Australia for his role hosting MasterChef – quickly becoming a crowd favourite after taking on the job in 2019. 

Today Mia reflects on her friendship with Jock, his warmth and the legacy he leaves behind.
