Tue, 17 May 2022 - 1h 51min - 54 - Bluey: S1E52 - Verandah Santa
It is Christmas Eve, and Bluey tries to sneak over and peak at a present. Her dad catches her and tells her that Santa doesn’t give presents to naughty children—setting up the whole episode. Bluey, Bingo, and Muffin, then run off apologizing to people all over the place for knocking into them because they want Santa to know they are good kids. They play a game with Bandit and end up having a great time. But when Socks comes in and bites Bluey, Bluey gets bitter and sets out to teach socks a lesson. Bluey learns the real reason you should be nice to someone…and it’s not because Santa is always watching. It’s a good lesson for parents to not threaten kindness out of your kids, but rather to show that they ought to treat others the way they’d want to be treated.
Mon, 9 May 2022 - 43min - 53 - Bluey: S1E51 - Daddy Putdown
Chilli is off to a baby shower, but Bluey does not want her to go. As soon as she leaves, Bluey misses her, so Bandit comes up with some games to distract her, but distraction only goes so far. Bluey asks her dad to call mom and ask her to come back, but as he does it, Bandit describes how much mom was looking forward to this, and Bluey thinks of what her mom wants and asks her dad to hang up. She then mirrors her mom and has a baby shower with some of her toys and it makes her feel much better. This is also a really great episode for the dynamic between Bandit and Bingo. But Bluey learns about missing someone you love and how to cope.
Fri, 6 May 2022 - 43min - 52 - Bluey: S1E50 - Shaun
Bingo and Bluey want a pet. So Bandit, thinking it’s a wise move, employs the service of his hand to act as an emu named Shaun to show his kids how difficult a pet can be. Bandit takes the girls all over the house and the town and seems to annoy them but also amuse them. And it ends up tiring Bandit out way more, and he crashes in the late afternoon and just sleeps all the way till morning. It also ends up backfiring as both of the girls now use their hands to peck at Bandit because Shaun had babies, and now the girls can annoy Bandit just like he annoyed them. The girls kinda bypass the idea of having a pet anymore and elect to have fun poking dad with Shaun’s babies.

Then the girls launch a campaign against their dad for all the things he does to tease them. After their list comes to a close, Bandit shows them how they are only telling half of the story, and we don’t hear what the difference is between teasing and play, but we know that it involves two people having fun, and we know the girls got a better grasp at what teasing is through this episode.

Bandit brings Bingo and Bluey to the supermarket to get some shopping done. But in the car ride there the two kids have a debate about who is the favorite child—note it’s always the oldest. When Bandit tells them that parents can’t have a favorite, Bluey goes full takeover and plays a game where she is the mom and Bingo and her dad are her two kids. Bingo is clearly her favorite and she ends up saying that out loud and really hurting Bandit’s feelings (in the game). So Bluey learns a lesson about favoritism and treating people equally.
Fri, 22 Apr 2022 - 43min - 46 - Bluey: S1E44 - Mount Mumandad
The family comes back from Crazy World, a theme park close by. The parents are exhausted after a long day with the kids, but the kids are still awake and ready to go. The ask to play one more game before bed and Bandit gives a condition that is has to be a game where he doesn’t have to move or speak with his mouth. So as mom and dad collapse on the couch, the girls decide to play Mount Mumandad—a game where they climb on their parents to reach the top (aka, Bandits nose). The girls learn that swiftness is not always as valuable as steadiness as the girls try to get to the top together.

This doesn’t stop Bluey from becoming friends with this dog and spending a lot of time with him over the next three days. Only, Jean Luc has to leave without Bluey getting a chance to say goodbye. Bluey learns that there are people that are in our lives for a little bit and then leave, but it doesn’t mean we can’t remember the good times we had with those people. And as she goes back to that camping spot many years later, Jean Luc finds her as the episode ends and EVERYONE is in tears.
Wed, 13 Apr 2022 - 54min - 44 - Bluey: S1E42 - Hide And Seek
Bluey has ADHD. And she cannot focus long enough on a task to be able to play a game with her family. The game they want to play is hide and seek, but Bluey loses her focus and ends up getting sidetracked by another toy. It’s only when she’s able to calm her mind and remember what she was doing a few minutes ago, that she goes off to find her family who are hidden all over the house. The family has a fun moment of games, but Bluey learns a lesson that focus can sometimes show another person that you care for them.
Mon, 11 Apr 2022 - 45min - 43 - Bluey: S1E41 - Mums and Dads
Rusty and Indy are playing mums and dads (mum with a u, not an o). They end up getting in a small little tiff about who goes to work, the mum or the dad. And when they can’t resolve it, Calypso, in her wisdom, plots and tells them to go play with Bluey and Mackenzie. But those play partners end up being even more miserable and they don’t play the game how Rusty and Indy do. So they meet up again, and resolve their issues with the other person, and then take it one step further, compromising and saying rather than it being a weekday, it’s the weekend and no one has to go to work! Problem solved. The two realize they are destined for each other, and they really just learn about compromise, how to work together, and how some of the gender roles we have in our society are just made up things.
Fri, 8 Apr 2022 - 46min - 42 - Bluey: S1E40 - Early Baby
Rusty interrupted Bluey, Indy, and Honey’s game…or did he. Calypso acts as the mediator here as Bluey tells her story of how they were playing early baby and hospitals and Rusty came in with the baby when he shouldn’t have. But Rusty tells his side of the story where he battled a sausage dragon because it was eating villagers, and he bravely fought it to get the princess back for the king. And then did a swap with the baby the girls were playing with and the girls saw it and flipped out! And all it took for both of them to calm down was to understand the story of what each of them were doing. A great little episode about how perspective can change our attitudes toward another person.

The episode is all about consideration and how we should think about others in their need.
Mon, 4 Apr 2022 - 37min - 40 - Bluey: S1E38 - Copycat
Bandit wakes up to find that Bluey is copying him in everything he does. So Bandit gets real funny and weird and tries to get Bluey to do some really funny and weird stuff. But as they are walking like speed walkers down the sidewalk, Bluey stops because she notices a budgie, or a bird, laying in the grass. It’s hurt. And Bandit grabs it and pops it in a shoebox to bring to the vet. Fully expecting the vet to heal them, the viewer is shocked when the doctor comes out and tells Bluey that the little budgie has died. The rest of the afternoon as Bluey goes home, she asks Bingo to help her play a game, and they essentially relive the day, with Bingo acting as the bird here, until they get to the part where the bird has died again. Chilli delivers the news, but Bingo comes popping out of the house and flies around all over the place. It helps to lighten the mood, but the emotional pull of this episode still stays true.

So the game is on, and the parents walk around from the markets, to the hotels and eventually to the bathroom where Bandit really needed to go. The kids look like they are having a blast as they make it more and more difficult for Bandit and Chilli to get stuff and do exactly what they want. Eventually the parents get to their room and are able to take a breather before they go for a hike (with the kids now as their boots) and the kids learn a lesson about what it means to go backpacking and to prepare for any and every circumstance.

It’s time to play zoo. Chilli is the mom, Bingo is the kid, Bluey is the zookeeper, and Bandit is the gorilla. Bandit is less than enthusiastic to play so Bluey prods him with a pool noodle to try to get him to move a little bit for the guests. It doesn’t work too much so they move on. But Bingo is intrigued and climbs into his cage where they develop a relationship. After the zookeeper notices, she grabs the hose and hoses Bandit down to try to stop him, but Bandit grabs Bingo and hops the fence in a beautiful slow motion masterpiece. The two end up on the run before a banana lures Bandit out of hiding and into captivity. The zookeeper recognizes the bond that they share though and while Bingo is sad as she goes to bed, Bluey brings the gorilla back to Bingo so they can share the love they have for each other. A strangely beautiful episode where the kids learn about the beautiful possibilities of what could have happened had Harambe lived.

When they get to the dump, Bluey discovers that Dad is throwing away Bluey’s drawings, and Bandit quickly falls from being the best dad in the world, to the worst. Bluey is hurt, but Bandit lets her know a lesson about recycling that fixes everything, and when he distracts them by going through the car wash, the girls then change their tune again from worst dad ever, back to best dad ever. He gets out of the trampoline and Bingo and Bluey persuade him to come back on to play another short game. This happens about three more times until Bandit really lets them know he has to go. The girls are super bummed and as Bandit gets ready to leave, Bluey comes up to him letting him know that she doesn’t want him to go to work. Bandit then tells her that her job is just as important as his, her job is to come up with fun games. And this unleashes a lot of creativity for Bluey as she goes back to the trampoline and creates a really fun game with her sister, so fun, in fact, that Chilli stops her gardening to join them. And Bluey learns the wonderful possibilities of creativity.

Bingo, feeling bad for her dad, hatches an elaborate ruse to cheer him up and she gets him to start dancing, which catches the eye of the pavlovian dancer, Chilli, who then hires him to dance for the night and all of Bandits dreams have come true. Bingo is making a domino heart for her dad. It’s a love heart. And she wants her dad to knock down them down. She runs over to him, but he’s on the phone and loses patients with Bingo. A rare moment for Bandit. Then the episode gets weird. There appear to be real fairies messing up the things around the house because Bandit did something to upset the fairies. A lot of this episode you think it’s Bingo, but there is no way. There’s just too many things that get done that make it an impossibility for it to have been Bingo. And together the family learn that they need to dance around the letterbox in order to appease the fairies. So they do and Bandit validates the hurt that Bingo is going through and this episode is just an episode of love and beauty.

They recruit the help of Nana and Bob and when they discover that Grannies can’t indeed floss, Bingo is a little annoyed and leaves the game. Bluey is upset that Bingo left but also knows that she's right, so she remedies that by having Nana learn how to floss and Bingo is super happy about it and they keep playing. They barrel Bandit over with their car, he hurts something in his back, and the girls stand there and floss as Chillis helps Bandit and they both dream together of their future of flossing when they’re old and gray.

Bandit tries to urge Missy to overcome her fear and Chilli knows that she will in her own time. And Missy does just that. At Bingo and Bluey’s most dire moment, when they get trapped in the belly of a blue whale, Missy comes down to help them out in a moment of bravery. After a bit of humility from Mackenzie, he comes back and him and Bluey both agree to some middle ground. The kids learn about compromise and working together and we also learn that Rusty is just the coolest one out of this whole group for the few seconds that he’s in the game.

They journey on through heights, through caves, and through a cheeky fox trying to trick them up. Unfortunately, the spring rolls are not ready yet and Bandit is not leaving without his spring rolls. They’ll be ready in five minutes which ends up feeling like an eternity for the girls as they try to find ways to entertain themselves. Wed, 2 Feb 2022 - 46min - 15 - Bluey: S1E13 - Spy Game
Bingo, Bluey, Mackenzie, Chloe, and Honey are all playing a “spy game” at a BBQ between the families. Bluey and Mackenzie are the spies, Chloe and Honey are the guards, and Bingo is collecting the potion grass. The purpose of the game is to collect a hair from every adult dog and with enough potion grass the kids should be able to control whatever the adults are doing with two sticks dug into the ground. Sounds ridiculous, but it might actually be real. Bingo gets fed up with collecting the potion grass as she wants to be a spy, and she quits. And Bluey needs to learn the valuable lesson of teamwork and leadership.

She is supposed to take pictures of all the fun things her and Bob do during the weekend and put them in the album the rest of her classmates have created during their weekends with Bob Bilby. But the girls get sucked into their screens, and after Chilli takes some pictures and shows them, Bingo is upset because Bob Bilby is having the worst weekend ever while with the Heelers. Bluey helps and puts the screens away for the rest of the weekend, and the family has adventures to last a lifetime and enough memories to put in the book to make all the other kids jealous of the weekend Bob Bilby spent with the Heelers.

After a few seconds of frustration, she looks over the playground with her dad and sees other puppies struggling to do things they want. Bentley can’t reach the monkey bars, Muffin can’t put on her backpack, and Bingo can’t reach the water fountain and she might never be able to drink water again. And as Bluey and Bandit watch these kids overcome and make a way to get what they want, Bluey learns that true joy is brought about by perseverance. Absolute masterpiece and one that had me tearing up.

So they number every room and Bandit is the guest. He walks up the stairs and finally picks out which room he wants to stay in. But Bingo, aka Slobbadobba, makes a ton of noise and is very hectic. Bluey takes over the game even more to the point where Bingo just doesn’t want to play anymore, and both Bingo and Bluey learn some valuable lessons of compromise, fun, and concussion protocol.

Wed, 19 Jan 2022 - 55min - 9 - Bluey: S1E7 - BBQ
There is a BBQ happening in the Heeler household and it appears that they have invited some extra family over—Stripe, Trixie, Muffin, and Socks. The kids are on one side of the porch, while the adults get things ready on the other. Bluey is playing pretend grilling and she has some sticks on a bench acting like sausages, and Bingo starts to assemble a salad—which becomes way more difficult than she imagined it would. So bingo learns how sometimes the jobs that seem easy and get no praise, are really some of the toughest jobs out there.
Mon, 17 Jan 2022 - 56min - 8 - Bluey: S1E6 - The Weekend
It is the weekend. And the girls plan to play all the games with their dad. And as they are playing all these amazing games Bingo has a moment when she sees a leaf bug for the first time and just is in absolute wonder and awe at this thing. She tries to get the attention of her dad, but it flies away before she can. The rest of the day looks wonderful, but as Bingo and Bluey go to bed, Bingo starts to cry. She is upset that her dad didn’t come to see the walking leaf and how Bandit cheers her up, and the music that ensues in the credits...just makes me so happy and teary eyed.

But things don’t quite go as expected when Bandit turns on them and tries to throw them in the wheelie bin. He malfunctions and Chilli needs to step in to save the day, which she does. The girls learn an important lesson about cutting corners and clear communication…and a little bit of love with their mom and dad. Chilli is also a fantastic plant parent and my hero.

Their mom, Chilli and next door neighbors, Lucky and Lucky's dad (amazing man right there) help out while their dad, Bandit, causes nothing but trouble for them. This episode shows us all how to truly have fun, how to play through a pulled muscle, and when its right to say sorry. It's another good one.
Thu, 6 Jan 2022 - 50min - 4 - Bluey: S1E2 - Hospital

There are some deeper themes of this episode as well and there are some theories I have about why Bandit is nervous in hospitals. Listen and let me know what you think of my theories.

The very first episode of Bluey is called The Magic Xylophone. I have many questions about this episode, but the one main one keeps hitting me in the back of the head: is the Xylophone real? Does it actually have magical powers. Because if not, Bandit is the greatest actor of all time. Join in for this episode as I chat about inclusion and how we can all learn from Bingo.
