Anti-Semitic incidents have dramatically increased since Hamas violently attacked Israel on October 7. Hamas’ October 7 massacre in Israel and the war since sparked questions about the End Times. We live in a fast-food culture where we want things yesterday. We get frustrated when we have to wait on things out of our control. In Romans 11, Paul writes that salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous. He says that he hopes his ministry to the Gentiles arouses jealousy, or as the King James Version says, “provokes” his own Jewish people to jealousy. Why should Christians care that Messianic Judaism exists in the world? Is Jesus a personal Savior of individuals or a national Redeemer of Israel? Christians and Jewish people tend to have different pictures of the Messiah. How can I know what Christian Zionism is when I’m not even sure what Zion means? “But wait, there’s more!” That could have been a good title for this podcast conversation. In this episode of A Jew and A Gentile Discuss, Ezra and Carly dive into the reason why Jesus seemingly dawdled in going to His friend Lazarus after hearing he was dying. Mary and Martha had sent urgent word to Jesus to come and heal their brother, but Jesus didn’t even leave where He was for a few days. Why? He showed up “late,” and Lazarus was long dead. The Sabbath: It’s the fourth commandment, but is it relevant today? Is it Saturday, or did it change to Sunday after Jesus’ resurrection? And are Jewish people really forbidden to drive a car and turn on a light switch on the Sabbath? What exactly is the Sabbath, and are we obligated to observe it?   In this episode of A Jew and A Gentile Discuss, Carly and Ezra tackle the subject of Shabbat, the Hebrew word for Sabbath, and reveal their different interpretations of it. They start by explaining the basic concept of the Sabbath, what it means and its biblical origin.   Carly asks why Jewish people pick and choose what to obey, citing strict observance of Shabbat but not other laws, particularly the sacrifices. Ever driven by a Jewish friend’s house sometime in the fall, maybe October? A little understanding goes a long way. Christians may be surprised at the meaning that some of their everyday Christian words and symbols can carry for the average Jewish person. Ezra Benjamin and Carly Berna, your hosts of the brand-new A Jew & A Gentile Discuss podcast, introduce themselves and explain what makes this podcast so different. Hold on a minute. Isn’t Israel a country? What do you mean by “land” and “people”? In this first of a three-part series of A Jew and A Gentile Discuss, Carly and Ezra discuss what the word “Israel” encompasses.   Coming from their two different backgrounds, each has their own questions for the other. Ezra asks Carly to explain what “Israel” and “standing with Israel” meant to her as a Gentile Christian before working in Jewish ministry.
