Akeeko - Yoruba for kids

Akeeko - Yoruba for kids

Temilade

As a Yoruba mom living in diaspora, I have seen many of our children associate negativity with the Yoruba language because parents tend to only speak Yoruba whenever they are giving instructions to their children. My aim is to change this narrative by providing fun and simple learning resources which will encourage parents to normalise the speaking of this beautiful mother tongue of ours with their children. • 4 - Àmì Ohùn (Tone Marks)

Today’s episode is all about the most important part in learning to read and write the Yoruba language. Using tone marks give the reader the exact words being used in that sentence because we have words that are spelt the same way but have different meanings with different tone marks.

There are 3 tone marks used in the Yoruba language, which are placed on the vowel in the pronounced syllable

    1. Low tone Do (\)

    2. Middle tone Re (_) and

    3. High tone Mi (/)

Using the word ‘igba’ as an example to describe how tone marks change the meaning of a word:

igba (re re) which means two hundred

igbá (re mi) which means calabash

ìgbà (do do) which means time period

ìgbá (do mi) which means garden egg

As always, this is described in more details in our activity book ‘Alifabeeti Yoruba’. See below links to get our children activity books on Amazon:
