Tue, 21 Feb 2023 - 21min - 59 - E53: The Femme Fatale Summit: French Mistresses
What caused the juxtaposition from bedmate to power player?
Monarchs in medieval Europe had extraconjugal sexual partners. What about the Tudors? Why was it only in France that a royal mistress could become a political power player?
This unique episode of All Things Tudor explores this phenomenon with Drs Tracy and Christine Adams, and we take a look at how a special place at court was developed for the royal mistress.
A new way of political influence developed - in the form of an intelligent, charismatic woman - one who usually became the royal mistress. Diane de Poitiers is a prime example of this power player.
This podcast will appeal to anyone interested in the history of women and royalty, gender studies, and Anne Boleyn.
Dr Tracy Adams is Professor of French in the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics at the University of Auckland. She is the author of three books, including Christine de Pizan and the Fight for France, also published by Penn State University Press.
Dr Christine Adams is Professor of History at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She is the author or co-editor of four books, including A Taste for Comfort and Status: A Bourgeois Family in Eighteenth-Century France, also published by Penn State University Press.

Tue, 20 Dec 2022 - 39min - 50 - E49: The Cult of Gloriana
In this episode of All Things Tudor, author, historian and Hampton Court Palace expert Siobhan Clarke examines how Elizabeth I wielded power with a sublimely crafted image. The 'Cult of Gloriana' was a movement in which authors, musicians, and artists - among them Shakespeare and Spenser - helped exalt the queen to the status of a virgin goddess.
Her image was widely owned and distributed, thanks to the expansion of printing. The English excelled in miniature painting which allowed courtiers to carry a likeness of their sovereign.
Ms Clarke's book, Gloriana: Elizabeth I and the Art of Queenship written with Linda Collins, tells the story of Elizabethan art as a powerful device for royal magnificence and propaganda.

Dr Emma Cahill Marron joins Deb in an intriguing discussion of Catherine of Aragon as you've never imagined her. Catherine, born to be a queen, was also a patron of the arts and culture. Dr Cahill brings Catherine of Aragon alive in the discussion. Dr Cahill Marron is an art and cultural historian. Over the last decade, she has published extensively about the cultural and artistic relations between the Tudor dynasty and the Spanish Monarch. Her study showed that as Queen of England, she was a patron of the arts that played a pivotal role in the introduction of Renaissance and Humanism into the court she presided over. Why is Mary such a figure of endless debate and fascination, and what does that say about Scotland's ever-evolving relationship with the 'daughter of debate'? Mary Queen of Scots was an active ruler of Scotland for just six years (1561-1567) yet her reign has attracted more attention and debate than that of any other monarch in Scottish History. Catch The Hunterian exhibit that explores the life and afterlife of Mary, and take the free Future Learn course.
