Battles Of The American Civil War

This week, we cover 4 battles as the war winds down. We start in Virginia with the battle of Waynesboro on March 2nd, 1865 where Brigadier General George Custer and his troops defeat Lt. General John Bell Hood and eliminate his army. Hood would not see the battlefield for the rest of his career.  

Next, we head to Florida on March 6th with the battle of Natural Bridge. A Confederate force tries to stop the Yankee's from crossing the bridge.  

For the last two battles of the episode, we go back to the Carolinas Campaign at the battles of Wyse Fork and Monroe's Crossroads, where Sherman continues his trek through the states to meet up with Grant up north.

Columbia, South Carolina was captured on February 17th, 1865 during the Carolinas Campaign. Sherman and his troops took over the city where Union troops and some residents got drunk and proceeded to burn the city and raise hell.

We roll on with the last year of the war with three more battles for this episode!   First up is the battle of Aiken on February 11th, 1865, in South Carolina as part of Sherman's Carolinas Campaign.  

We go to Florida for the small battle of Fort Myers on February 20th which is known as the southernmost battle of the war.  

We finish off this short episode with the battle of Wilmington which the Union look to take after their capture of Fort Fisher and deny the Confederates of any more ports on the East Coast.

We start out the year of 1865 and the final year of the war. It gets started with the Second Battle Of Fort Fisher on January 13th-15th in North Carolina where the Union attempt for a second time to take the last major coastal stronghold the Confederates had.  

Then it's on to South Carolina with the battles of Broxton Bridge and Rivers' Bridge from February 2nd-3rd. Here, the Union hope to take down the last Confederate defenses standing in their way on the road to Columbia, South Carolina.  

For our last battle we head to Virginia for the battle of Hatcher's Run on February 5th-7th during the Siege Of Petersburg as the Union look to cut of Rebel supply lines on the Boydton Plank Road.

This week, we come to the end of 1864 with the Confederates on the brink of defeat. We end the year with 3 battles, the first of two sees the Union going back to Saltville to try and destroy the works for good with the battles of Marion and Second Saltville. Our very last battle of the year takes us to Tennessee with the battle of Anthony's Hill where the rearguard of the retreating Army Of Tennessee tries and holds off the Union pursuers.

The battle of Nashville took place December 15th-16th, 1864 and Confederate John Bell Hood tries one more time to make up for his recent failures in the Franklin-Nashville campaign. Unfortunately for him, it doesn't work out and after this battle his army of the Tennessee was dissolved and he was dismissed from service in early 1865.

Coming up this week we have 4 battles as we near the end of 1864. First up we head back to Sherman's March To The Sea with the battle of Waynesboro on December 4th, 1864 where the Union hope to clear the way for Sherman to continue on to Savannah.  

Then, it's back to the Franklin-Nashville Campaign where John Bell Hood tries one last attempt to force Sherman out of Georgia at the Third Battle of Murfreesboro December 5th-7th.  

At the first battle of Fort Fisher in North Carolina on December 24th-27th, the Union try to capture the Rebel's last major Atlantic port. Union Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler fails in his mission and is soon let go from the Union Army.  

We end the episode with the Second Battle of Fort McAllister on December 13th which was the last obstacle to get to Savannah. We also wrap up the rest of Sherman's March To The Sea with the aftermath and the debate of "total war" or "hard war" in terms of Sherman's strategy on the march.

In one of the worst performances by the Confederates in the war, Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood attempts to stop Union Major General John Schofield from retreating to the highly defended Nashville. It failed miserably.

This week we take a look at one of the most disgusting acts committed by either side during the war. On November 29th, 1864, members of the Third Colorado Cavalry attacked a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho murdering anyone they could, including infants and women with most being mutilated.  

We end the episode with the small battle of Honey Hill on  November 30th, which was the third battle in William Sherman's March To The Sea.

We are going back and forth from Georgia to Tennessee in this week's episode. Starting out with the opening battle of Sherman's March to the Sea we have the battle of Griswoldville on November 22nd, 1864.  

We move to Tennessee where the Franklin-Nashville campaign continues with the battle of Columbia on November 24th-29th as Confederates under Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood continue to move into Tennessee.  

We head back to Georgia with Sherman continuing his march at the battle of Buckhead Creek on November 28th.  

Finally, our last battle is back in Tennessee with the battle of Spring Hill on the 29th of November where John Bell Hood attacks once again after the Union's retreat from Columbia.

This week, we have three battles in the state of Tennessee starting with the battle of Morristown on October 28th, 1864 in which newly selected running mate of Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, is tasked with removing Confederate resistance in East Tennessee.  

Our second battle of Johnsonville on November 4th-5th, takes us back to the Franklin-Nashville Campaign where Nathan Bedford Forrest is still a thorn in the Union's side.  

Our last battle of the episode takes us back to East Tennessee with the battle of Bull's Gap, which picks up where Morristown left off.

We are nearing the end of October, 1864, and we have another four battles on this week's episode. The battle of Decatur, TN was fought on October, 26th-29th, where Confederate General John Hood attempts to cross the Tennessee River, but the Union has other plans.  

For the next two battles, we head back to the Siege of Petersburg where Grant plans another two pronged attack on October 27th-28th. One at Boydton Plank Road to cut off a supply line to Petersburg and the other at Fair Oaks and Darbytown Road to attack the Richmond defenses.  

Our final battle we once again head back to Price's Missouri raid and the Second Battle of Newtonia on October 28th. This was the final battle of the raid and pretty much the end of Price's force.

Price's Missouri Raid continues on in this week's episode as all four of our battles are basically one big continuation of each other. After these battles, Price and his army are pretty much finished.

We have four battles for this week's episode! The first, St. Alban's raid, was the northern most land action of the war. It took place October 19, 1864, on the Vermont/Canada border when a few Confederates decided to rob some banks to fund the Confederate cause.  

The next three battles, Little Blue River, Byram's Ford, and 2nd Independence,  are all apart of Price's Missouri raid in which he is still trying to draw Union troops away from the larger campaigns in the east.

We have the huge battle of Cedar Creek for this week's episode! Taking place on October 19th, 1864. The Confederates took advantage of early morning fog and surprised the Union troops. However,  Jubal Early failed to press his attack and a devastating late afternoon Union counterattack effectively ended Early's presence in the Shenandoah Valley.

We have 5 battles this week starting out with the battle of Allatoona on October 5th, 1894 which started out the Franklin-Nashville Campaign.  

The battle of Tom's Brook took place on October 9th as part of the Shenandoah Campaign.  

The last three battles all take place as part of Price's Missouri Expedition. Price is hoping to draw troops away from the major campaigns out east. The capture of Sedalia was on October 15th, the battle of Glasgow was also the 15th, and the second battle of Lexington took place October 19th. All of these were Confederate victories.

This week we start out with a battle in Florida in one of the last cities held by the Confederates. On September 27th, 1864, Union Cavalry attacked Marianna, FL which resulted in the battle of Marianna.  
Next up, Grant sets up a dual assault on the rebels on both of Robert E. Lee's flanks. The first and eastern assault was the battle of Chaffin's Farm on September 29th-30th. 

The western portion was the battle of Peebles' Farm on September 30th-October 2nd.  

Our last battle was in Saltville, VA where the Union attempted to take the town and stop the Confederate supply of salt. However, after the Union retreated, the wounded men left on the battlefield were massacred by the Confederates with estimates of around 50 soldiers killed, mostly from the black regiments.

Another week, another 3 battles! First up is the battle of Fisher's Hill on September 21-22, 1864 as part of the Valley Campaigns. Union Mj. Gen Philip Sheridan and Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early are facing off once again.  

The second battle of the episode is the battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle fought near Athens, Alabama from September 23-25. Confederate Nathan Bedford Forrest leads his troops in northern Alabama to disrupt William T. Sherman's supply line.  

Our final battle is the battle of Fort Davidson on September 27th in Missouri. Confederate Maj. Gen. Sterling Price looks to challenge Union control in the state and decides to attempt to take the fort.

This week we cover one of the largest and bloodiest battles in the Shenandoah Valley in the entire war. Union Major General Philip Sheridan battled Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Early at the Third Battle Of Winchester on September 19th, 1864 near Winchester, Virginia.

It's the final battle in the Atlanta Campaign as Sherman's Union Army looks to finally take the city. The battle of Jonesborough took place August 31–September 1, 1864, and resulted in the only time a frontal assault by the Union was successful. The victory here sealed the presidential election for Abe Lincoln.

This week we another 4 battles, but also another short episode. At the second battle of Memphis, August 21st, 1864, Confederate Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest raid the Union held city of Memphis.

Also August 21st, it's the battle of of Summit Point, West Virginia as the second battle of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

We head back to the Siege of Petersburg on August 25th where the Union attempt to destroy the Petersburg Railroad, which was a vital supply line for Robert E. Lee and his army.

Finally, we end with another battle in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign with the battle of Smithfield Crossing on August 25th-29th where Philip Sheridan and his army are still trying to get Jubal Early under control.

This week we have a super short episode with 4 super short battles. It's the battle of Guard Hill, the battle of Gainesville, the battle of Globe's Tavern, and the battle of Lovejoy's Station. All of these take place between August 16th-20th, 1864. The most significant of these battles, Globe Hill, resulted in the Union finally getting a victory at Petersburg and tearing up railroad track that the Rebels couldn't repair.

Another week and another 4 battles! First up, it's the small battle of Utoy Creek on August 4th-7th, 1864 of the Atlanta Campaign where Union troops attempt to damage rail lines.  

The battle of Moorefield occurred August 7th near Moorefield, West Virginia where Jubal Early is still causing trouble.  

Then it's the small battles of Second Dalton and Second Deep Bottom. Part of the Atlanta Campaign and Seige Of Petersburg, respectively.

Four more battles on this week's episode starting out with the small battles of Brown's Mill of the Atlanta Campaign, Fort Smith in Arkansas, and Folck's Mill as part of Early's raid on the B&O Railroad.  

For our big battle of the episode, we head to Alabama for the battle of Mobile Bay where the Union Navy battles the Confederate Navy for control of the bay. This was the last Naval battle in Alabama during the war.

Coming up this week, we have 3 battles. One from the Atlanta Campaign, one from the Siege Of Petersburg, and one in Dakota Territory against the Sioux.  

First up, on July 28th, 1864, in Fulton County, GA, it's the battle of Ezra Church where the Atlanta Campaign continues.  

Our second battle is the battle of Killdeer Mountain in Dakota Territory on July 28th-29th. Union BG Alfred Sully lead an expedition against the Sioux in what was the largest ever carried out against Native Americans by the U.S.  

Finally, our third battle is the Battle Of The Crater on July 30th. The Siege of Petersburg continues with this battle being notable for the Union exploding a mine under Confederate positions that created a crater that was 170 west long, 100 feet wide and at least 30 feet deep.

Another week and another four battles. First up, it's Rutherford's Farm July 20th, 1864 in Frederick County, VA as Jubal Early continues his move away from Washington. 

In the big battle of the episode it's the Battle Of Atlanta on July 22nd as Sherman looks to finally take Atlanta once and for all.

Jubal Early is at it again at the Second Battle Of Kernstown on July 24th where he launches the last major raid in Union territory in the war.


At the First Battle Of Deep Bottom on July 27th-29th as part of the Siege Of Petersburg.

Coming up this week we are covering four battles from three campaigns. First up is the small battle of Camden Point in Missouri on July 13th, 1864. Part of the Paw Paw Rebellion, Union soldiers attacked Confederates who were caught by surprise as they were having a picnic.  

The battle of Tupelo was fought July 14th-15th where Union troops battle Confederate forces to ensure the safety of Sherman's supply lines for the Atlanta Campaign.  

At the battle of Cool Spring in Clarke County, Virginia on July 17th-18th, where Jubal Early continues to make his way back from the Washington D.C. area.  

Our last battle of the episode is the Battle Of Peachtree Creek in the Atlanta Campaign on July 20th. Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood launches his first major attack against Sherman since taking control of the Army Of Tennessee from Joseph E. Johnston.

Coming up this week we have another 4 battles including 2 that reach the doorstep of Washington D.C.  

Our first battle is the battle of Sappony Church on June 28th, 1864, which was part of the Wilson-Kautz raid to take out Confederate supply lines.  

The first battle of Ream's Station was again part of the Wilson-Kautz raid and took place June 29th, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.  

Then we move to the battle of Monocacy on July 9th as Jubal Early attempts to divert Union forces away from the Petersburg siege and make his way to D.C.  

Our final battle of the episode is a big one for the Union. After their defeat at Monocacy the Union must now make sure Early doesn't march into Washington D.C. at the battle of Fort Stevens on July 11th-12th with the Capital building in Early's sight.

We have three battles this week as we continue on with the Siege Of Petersburg and the Atlanta Campaign. First up, the battle of St. Mary's Church on June 24th, 1864 as Union forces try to protect a wagon train headed for the James River. This was the last battle of the Overland Campaign.  

At the battle of Staunton River Bridge on June 25th, Grant sent troops to try and destroy Confederate rail lines to cut Lee's supplies.  

Our final battle of the day, Kennesaw Mountain of the Atlanta Campaign on June 27th saw Union Major General William T. Sherman's most significant frontal assault of the campaign. The Confederates hope to stall Sherman's march to Atlanta.

We continue on with the Siege of Petersburg as well as the Atlanta Campaign. But first, we have a 1v1 ship battle just off the coast of Cherbourg, France. On June 19th, the USS Kearsarge followed the CSS Alabama to a French port. When it was clear that the Kearsarge wasn't leaving, the Alabama was escorted out of French waters where the battle between the two ships would commence.  

Next up is the battle of Jerusalem Plank Road on June 21st-22nd in Petersburg Virginia. The Union's aim was to extend their siege lines to the west and cut the rail lines that supplied Petersburg.  

We end the episode with the battle of Kolb's Farm of the Atlanta Campaign on June 22nd. Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood believed he had an opportunity to defeat the Union forces in front of him but the Union had other plans.

We have two battles on this week's episode starting off with the Second Battle of Petersburg on June 15–18, 1864 where Grant tries to take Petersburg once again before ultimately having to settle on a siege of the city.  

We wrap up the episode with the battle of Lynchburg on June 17th-18th in Lynchburg, Virginia where Union Maj. Gen. David Hunter attempts to capture the city from Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early. This was the last battle in the Lynchburg campaign.

Coming up in this week's episode is three battles in three states. First up is the battle of Brice's Cross Roads fought June 10th, 1864 in Mississippi in which a federal expedition force commanded by Samuel D. Sturgis was defeated by a Confederate force commanded by Nathan Bedford Forrest. This was part of what was known as "Forrest's Defense Of Mississippi." 

In our second battle we go to Kentucky for the small battle of Cynthiana on June 11th-12th where Union forces stopped a raid by Confederate Brigadier General John Morgan and his raiders.

Our last battle takes us back to Virginia and the Overland Campaign and the battle of Trevilian Station on June 11th-12th. Union cavalry under Maj. Gen Philip Sheridan faced out against Confederate cavalry under Maj. Gens. Wade Hampton and Fitzhugh Lee. This was the largest and bloodiest all-cavalry battle in the Civil War.

We got another four battles in this week's episode starting off with the second battle in the Lynchburg Campaign and the Battle Of Piedmont on June 5th, 1864 in Augusta County, GA. Next up is the small battle of Old River Lake on June 5th-6th, 1864 in Chicot County, AK as the Union try to make their way to Lake Village. The battle of Marietta, GA occured during the Atlanta Campaign during a series of battles in the era during June 9th-July 3rd. This is a small but significant skirmish because of the death of Confederate General Leonidas Polk. We end the episode with the 1st Battle of Petersburg in Virginia on June 9th which kicks off the events leading to the Siege Of Petersburg.

The Battle of Cold Harbor took place May 31st-June 12th, 1864 in Hanover County, VA during the Overland Campaign. It is remembered mostly as an unnecessary battle in which the Union suffered a lopsided loss that earned Ulysses S. Grant the nickname "The Butcher"

The Overland and Atlanta Campaigns rage on in this episode! First up, we got the 7th battle of the Overland Campaign on May 24th, 1864 in Charles City, Virginia where Confederate Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee attacks a Union supply depot. This battle is notable as it's the first encounter of The Army Of Northern Virginia against African-American troops of the Union.

Next up, the battle of New Hope Church, the 7th battle of the Atlanta Campaign on May 25th-26th in Paulding County, GA sees Union Major General William Sherman still trying to break through Confederate General Joseph Johnston's lines.

We end the episode still at the Atlanta Campaign and the battle of Dallas, GA on May 28th.

We follow with the small battle of Ware Bottom Church on May 20th and this was the last battle of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. We end it with the big boys going at it once again, it's the Overland Campaign and the battle of North Anna which was actually a series of 3 actions taking place May 23rd-26th.

We are back to the Overland Campaign in our first battle of Yellow Tavern which took place May 11th, 1864 in Henrico County, VA. It was small battle but significant because of the death of J.E.B. Stuart after he was shot and killed by a retreating Union soldier. We move on to the battle of Proctor's Creek on May 12th-16th, part of the Bermuda Hundred campaign in Chesterfield County, VA. We end the episode with the battle of Resaca in the Atlanta Campaign on May 13th-15th where William Sherman's forces faces off against Joseph Johnston's forces in Gordon and Whitfield Counties, GA.

Fresh off the Battle Of The Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse, we take a break from the main armies of both sides we have two battles from the Bermuda Hundred Campaign and two from the Crook-Averell Raid. First up, the battle of Swift Creek fought on May 9th, 1864 in Chesterfield County, VA where Union Major General Benjamin Butler looks to destroy a local railroad. Also on May 9th, in Pulaski County, VA, we have the battle of Cloyd's Mountain in which Union Birgadier General George Crook destroys a major bridge on the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad used by Confederates to carry troops and supplies. We head back to Benjamin Butler at the battle of Chester Station on May 10th where his army is attacked by Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard and his army. Lastly, we go back to the Crook-Averell Raid at the battle of Cove Mountain May 10th, where the Confederate try and stop Brigadier General William Averell from attacking one of their lead mines in Wythe County, VA.

After the Battle Of The Wilderness, The Army Of The Potomac moved southeast to find a more favorable fighting ground. The Army Of Northern Virginia followed and the two armies faced off at the crossroads of the Spotsylvania Court House from May 9th-21st. Lee now realizes that Grant will be like no other General he has faced from the Union so far.

In this episode, we also cover three small battles that preceded this one which were the battle of Port Walthall Junction on May 6th-7th in Virginia, the battle of Calcasieu Pass on May 6th in Louisiana, and the battle of Rocky Face Ridge on May 7th-13th in Georgia. We are on to the first HUGE battle of 1864! It's the Battle Of The Wilderness and The Army Of The Potomac faces off against the Army Of Northern Virginia. This is Ulysses S. Grants first big battle since taking over the Union Army and he would prove to more aggressive than any of his predecessors. The battle of was fought May 5th-7th in Virginia and was the opening battle of Grant's Overland Campaign.

We continue on with the Red River Campaign as we take a look at the battle of Jenkins' Ferry which occurred April 30t, 1864 southwest of Little Rock, Arkansas. This being the last battle of the Camden Expedition (part of the Red River Campaign) the Union looks to continue their retreat into Little Rock as the Confederates are hot on their tail. We end the episode with the battle of Albemarle Sound on May 5th, in North Carolina in which eight Union gunboats try and stop three Confederate warships from advancing up the river in their attempt to retake New Bern which has been in Union hands since March of 1862.

We start out this episode with more of the Red River Campaign as the Confederates attempt to trap Union Major General Nathaniel P. Banks and his troops at Monett's Ferry in Natchitoches Parish, LA on April 23rd, 1864. Then, we stick with the campaign but move to Arkansas where, on April 25th, 1864, where the Rebels attack a Union supply train on it's way from Camden to Pine Bluff.

We have some more Red River Campaign in this episode as Confederate BG Tom Green attacks Union gunboats at the battle of Blair's Landing on April 12th, 1864. We move to Kentucky for the battle of Salyersville on April 13th-14th which was the largest skirmish in Magoffin County during the war. Finally, we end with the battle of Poison Spring on April 18th where the Union continue to have no luck reaching Shreveport.

Then we end with a controversial battle at Fort Pillow on March 16th. This is notable for Nathan Bedford Forrest directing his men to massacre surrendering Union forces.

Continuing on with more of the Red River Campaign we start off this week with the battle of Elkin's Ferry, which was actually apart of the Camden Expedition which was designed to aid Nathaniel Banks and his quest to capture Shreveport. It took place April 3-4, 1864 in Arkansas. On April 8th the battle of Mansfield took place which the Union hope will advance them closer to Shreveport, Louisiana. We end the episode with the battle of Praire D'ane where the Union hope to join their forces of the Camden Expedition with that of the rest of the Red River Campaign to finally take down Shreveport.

We start off this week's episode with the battle of Yazoo City, Mississippi on March 5th, 1864 where Union Colonel James Coates was attacked by Confederate BG Lawrence Ross. At the battle of Fort De Russy On March 14th in Louisiana, General Nathaniel Banks and his forces look to capture Shreveport which was the Confederate headquarters west of the Mississippi. The very small battle of Laredo in Texas on March 18th saw the Union fail to stop Confederates from transporting cotton bales into Mexico. Lastly, the battle of Paducah on March 24th in Kentucky sees Confederate MG Nathan Bedford Forrest try to capture much needed supplies from the Union.

We have another 5 battles on this week's episode as 1864 continues to start off slow. We'll start in Lauderdale County, MS for the Meridian campaign from February 14th-20th which is a prelude to Sherman's march to the sea later in the year. We head to Baker County, FL for the battle of Olustee on the February 20th, which was the largest battle in Florida during the war. Back to Mississippi for the battle of Okolona on February 22nd where Confederate and Union cavalry faced off. Then it's some skirmishes in Dalton, Georgia between the 22nd and 27th before we end the episode in Virginia and the battle of Walkerton on March 2nd.

We kick off the year 1864 with five battles, all of which are minor. The Battle of Dandridge, January 17, 1864, occurred in Jefferson County, TN. The Battle of Athens was fought in Athens, Alabama on January 26, 1864. The Battle of Fair Garden was a minor cavalry battle between the Army of Ohio and The Department of East Tennessee, occurring on January 27, 1864, in Sevier County, TN. The Battle of Morton's Ford was fought February 6–7, 1864. And lastly, The Battle of Middle Boggy took place on February 13, 1864 in Choctaw Indian Territory.

We come to the end to the year of 1863 with the final two battles of the year. Starting out the episode, we have the battle of Bean's Station where Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet attacks a Union Army Cavalry led by BG. Gen. James M. Shackelford at Bean Station, Tennessee. Out final battle of year sees a small skirmish at the battle of Mossy Creek in Jefferson County, Tennessee where Confederate Maj. Gen. William T. Martin commander of Longstreet's cavalry attacked Union Brig. Gen. Samuel D. Sturgis and his men at Talbott's Station sending them back to Mossy Creek where the battle lasted about 7 hours.

As we get closer to ending the year 1863 we have another 3 battles on this episode. The Mine Run Campaign took place November 27th-December 2nd, 1863 in Orange County,Virginia. General Meade fails to put an end to Lee's Army and operations are halted in the Eastern Theater for the rest of the year. At the battle of Ringgold Gap on November 27th in Ringgold, Georgia, the Confederate Army of Tennessee look for a safe passage through the gap after their retreat from Missionary Ridge. Finally, at the battle of Fort Sanders on November 29th, Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet hopes to break through the defensive lines of Union Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside.

This week we have two pivotal battles in the Chattanooga Campaign with the Union looking to take control of the state of Tennessee for good. First up, it's the battle of Lookout Mountain on November 24th, 1863, as Union Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker and his squad hope to defeat Confederate Maj. Gen Carter L. Stevenson at Lookout Mountain and assist Grant's Army at Missionary Ridge. That very next day, Grant looks to take out Bragg's Army at Missionary Ridge and open the gateway to the South, and capture Tennessee for good.

We are in the month of November clost to wrapping up the year 1863. Our first battle of the episode is the Second Battle Of Rappahannock Station on November 7th where Confederate Maj. Gen. Jubal Early and his forces square off against Union Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick and his forces in Viginia. And our only other battle has Confederate James Longstreet hoping to crush Amborse Burnside and his Army of the Ohio at the battle of Campbell's Station on November 16th in Tennessee.

Back in the saddle with three more battles! This time, we have two really short battles and end with a decent battle in West Virginia. November 3rd, 1863 the Cofederates attempt to break up the Memphis and Charleston Railrod at the Battle of Collierville. At the battle of Rogersville,the Confederates are able to recapture the city along with it's supplies. And at the big battle of the episode, the battle of Droop Mountain on November 6th Union forces attempt to drive the Confederates from their breastworks on Droop Mountain.

It's five more small battles for this week's episode. We start out at the battle of Blue Springs October 10th, 1863, in Greene County, Tennessee where Union Major General Burnside looks to clear the roads and passes to Virginia. At the first battle of Auburn in Fauquier County, VA on October 13th, it's the beginning of the Union's Bristoe Campaign in an effort to eliminate General Lee and his Army. The very next day at the second battle of Auburn Major General J.E.B. Stuart is trapped between Union Armies and needs to be rescued. The same day at the battle of Bristoe Station the Union sucessfully surprise and repel a Confederate attack on their rearguard. Finally, we end the episode with the battle of Fort Brooke on October 16th-18th in which the Union attempt to destroy Confederate blockade runners in Tampa, FL.

We have three short battles for you this week making it a short episode after last episode's massive Chickamauga battle. On September 20th, 1863, the Union Army looks to clear roads and gaps on their way to Virginia in the battle of Blountville in east Tennessee. At the battle of Stirling's Plantation on September 29th, the Federals and Rebels fight it out in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Finally, Qauntrill and his raiders are at it again as they attack Fort Baxter on October 6th, hoping to take the fort but were repulsed, but not before they massacred 103 Union troops.

Chickamauga took place September 18th-20th, 1863 and marked the end of the Chickamauga Campaign for the Union. It was the first major battle of the war fought in Georgia, the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater, and involved the second-highest number of casualties after Gettysburg.

We have 3 short battles this week that will lead us right into next week's huge Battle Of Chickamauga. Up first, the September 8th, 1863 Battle of Sabine Pass in Texas was an attempt by the Union to cut off a potential supply route to Mexico after France took control and appointed their own "emperor: there. Jefferson Davis called his one-sided Confederate victory "..the most remarkable in military history" in 1876. Up next, the Battle of Bayou Fourch on September 10th in Arkansas was the final battle in the Little Rock campaign which saw the Union try and take control of the Captiol city of Little Rock. And finally, at the Battle of Davis's Cross Roads on September 10th-11th leads us directly into the Battle Of Chickamauga.

We are gearing up towards the battle of Chickamauga, which is the last huge battle of 1863 but first we have another 4 battles on this episode. The second battle of Chattanooga on August 21st, 1863 is the opening battle of the Chickamauga Campaign as Major General Rosecrans attempts to take Chattanooga from the Rebels and General Braxton Bragg. Union Brigadier General John W. Davidson faces off against Confederate Brigadier General John S. Marmaduke at Bayou Meto on August 27th. At Devil's Backbone in Arkansas on September 1st, the Union fend off the Confederates to keep Fort Smith safe for the rest of the war. And finally, we end with a massacre, although some historians say it was just a battle. Union BG Alfred Sully attacks an Indian Village at Whitestone Hill and murders innocent women and children in the process.

This week of the war brings us 3 battles and a massacre. First up, on July 28th, 1863, Henry Hastings Sibley is still fighting the Indians at the battle of Stony Lake. Then, we move back to Charleston Harbor where the second Battle Of Fort Sumter takes place. On August 21st, the infamous Lawrence Massacre also known as Qauntrill's Raid occurs in which Quantrill and his raiders kill around 150 unarmed men and boys in the city of Lawrence, Kansas in retaliation of the town's longstanding stance on supporting abolition. We end the episode with the battle of Brooklyn, Kansas immediately following the massacre after townsfolk and some Union cavalrymen pursue the raiders.

We have five battles on this week's episode starting off on July 19th, 1863 with the battle of Buffington Island where Morgan's raid is continuing, and it was also the largest battle in Ohio during the war. Next, Lee continues his retreat from Gettysburg at Manassas Gap on July 23rd as the Union tries to prevent Lee from passing the gap. The battles of Big Mound and Dead Buffalo Lake were fought between Union and Indian forces with the battle of Big Mound consisting of the largest forces ever assembled to fight the Indians. Finally, at Salineville on July 26th, John Hunt Morgan's raid finally comes to an end. This is farthest north a Confederate States Army force saw action.

We're coming back at ya with three more battles on this episode! First up is the battle of Honey Springs on July 17th, 1863 which was the largest confrontation between the north and south in the state of Oklahoma. It was also unique in that the battle was made up mostly of African American and Native American troops, which was a first. Up next we have the Second Battle of Fort Wagner on July 18th, where a second attempt to capture Fort Wagner failed. This is most notable for the involvement of the 54th Massachusetts that became the focus of the movie "Glory" We end the episode with the Second Battle of Charleston Harbor or the Siege of Charleston Harbor on July 18th-September 7th. After being repulsed twice at Fort Wagner the Union decides to siege Charleston Harbor and bombard the fort for 60 days before the Confederates finally abandon the fort.

We have four battles for you this week starting with the first failed attempt at taking Fort Wagner. The first battle of Fort Wagner on July 10th-11th was a failed attempt and was the lead up to Second Fort Wagner and the 54th Massachusett's story. The battle of Kock's Plantation on July 12th-13th left the Confederates in control of the Cajun Country in Louisiana. The New York City Draft Riots took place July 13th-16th where the white residents of New York were not happy with the draft that was just implemented resulting in numerous murdered African Americans. Finally, the battle of Grimball's Landing on July 16th attempted to draw Confederate forces away from Fort Wagner so the Union could launch another attack.

This week we have four battles and we start out with Williamsport on July 6th-16th, 1863 as Robert E. Lee continues his retreat whil J.E.B. Stuart screen his army. At Boonsboro on July 8th, Lee continues his retreat as his cavalry battles the pursuing Union. We shift to Indiana and Corydon on July 9th as part of the Confederate's Morgan's raid. Finally, at Funkstown on July 10th, Union forces attack the reargaurd of Lee's army as he continues his retreat.

Immediately after the Vicksburg siege ended, Grant was concerned that Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, who was in nearby Jackson, was going to attack and attempt to retake Vicksburg. Grant ordered Major General William T. Sherman to stop this which led to another siege, this time at Jackson.

After the huge battle of Gettysburg last episode we take a look at a couple battles happening at the same time. First up is the battle of Hunterstown on July 2nd, 1863, in which Confederate Brig. Gen. Wade Hampton's cavalry engages Union cavalry but withdraws. At the battle of Fairfield on July 3rd, the Confederates look to secure Hagerstown Road which Lee would use after he retreats from Gettysburg. At the battle of Tebbs' Bend, an outnumbered Union force repulses attacks from dismounted Confederate cavalry. Finally, at the battle of Helena on July 4th, the Confederates look to capture Helena, Arkansas to relieve pressure on Vicksburg.

We have made it to the Battle Of Gettysburg! Taking place on July 1st-3rd, it is the largest loss of life of any battle of the war. The loss by the Confederates halted Robert E. Lee's second attempt at an invasion of the North and he would never attempt another one. The Union victory, along with Vicksburg a day later, is often cited as the turning point of the war.

In this super short episode we have the last three battles before the incredibly hugh Battle Of Gettysburg. In the Battle of Sporting Hill on June 30th, 1863, CSA Lt. Gen. Ewell attempts to take the capitol of Pennsylvania but Union Maj. Gen. Couch puts a stop to that. At the Battle of Carlisle on July 1st in Pennsylvania, J.E.B. Stuart set fire to the Carlisle Barracks under Union Maj. Gen. Baldy Smith before leaving to join the ongoing Gettysburg battle. For the last battle, we move to Oklahoma where, on July 1st-2nd, CSA Col. Stand Watie attempts to attack a Union supply convoy led by Col. James Monroe but it fails. Be sure to join us for the next episode where we cover arguably the most famous battle of the Civil War, The Battle Of Gettysburg!

This week, we have five short battles as move closer to the huge battle of Gettysburg. First up, it's the battle of Hoover's Gap on June 24th, 1863 where Union General Rosecrans drives General Bragg out of Tennessee. We move to June 27th and the battle of Portland Harbor where Confederates try and destroy the area's commercial shipping capability. On June 28th, the Confederates try and take back Donaldsonville, Louisiana. At Goodrich's Landing on June 29th-30th, the Rebels hope to disrupt Grant's supply chain and relieve the pressure at Vicksburg. Finally, at the battle of Hanover on June 30th, as J.E.B. Stuart tries to reconnect with Lee's main army, he runs into a Union regiment.

This week, we have four short battles with 3 of them involving the Gettysburg campaign in whice J.E.B. Stuart is tasked with preventing Union Brig. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton from discovering Robert. E. Lee's position. Those battles are Aldie on June 17th, 1863, Middleburg on June 17th-19th, and Upperville on June 21st. Sandwiched between Middleburg and Upperville, we have the battle of LaFourche Crossing in Louisiana on June 20th-21st in the Confederates are attempting to disrupt Union supply lines.

This week's episode we continue the Vicksburg campaign battles and head into the Gettysburg campaign. June 9th, 1863, Confederates were trying to relieve Union pressure from Vicksburg at the battle of Lake Providence. Then, in Virginia, Confederate Lt. General Richard Ewell moves north through the Shenandoah Valley on his way to Pennsylvania as Union Major General Robert Milroy tries to stop him at the Second Battle of Winchester on June 13th-15th.

Next up, we have another battle in the Vicksburg Campaign with the battle of Milliken's Bend that took place on June 7th, 1863 in Madison Parish, Louisiana. The Confederates mistakenly believed that Grant's supply line still ran through here. To close out the episode, we have the battle of Brandy Station on June 9th, at the beginning of the Gettysburg Campaign and was the largest predominately cavalry engagement of the war and the largest ever on American soil.

This week's episode focuses on the Union's attempt to take seize Port Hudson and take control of the Mississippi River. The first battle, named Plains Store, took place on May 21st, 1863 in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was the first step in trying to capture Port Hudson. The last battle of the episode which is the seige of Port Hudson took place from May 22nd to July 9th. The Union placed Port Hudson under siege that lasted 48 and was the longest siege in American history up to that point.

We have finally made it to Vicksburg! Grant has been trying to take this city since basically the start of the war and he finally manages to surround Vicksburg and start a siege. The siege ends on July 4th and between this and Gettysburg, which ended July 3rd, these events were seen as the turning point of the war.

This week we have 3 more battles until the official start of the Siege Of Vicksburg. Up first, on May 14th, Grant decides to take the strategic town of Jackson Mississippi. After Jackson is occupied, Grant sets his sites on Champion Hill on May 16th where Confederate General Johnston retreated. Finally, on May 17th, Pemberton tries to prevent the Union from crossing the Big Black River bridge and pave the way for Grant to take Vicksburg, which doesn't go so well.

As we move closer to the start of the Siege Of Vicksburg, we have a couple battles in the Vicksburg campaign and another sandwiched inbetween in Missouri. First up, the battle of Port Gibson on May 1st as Grant tries to capture the fort on his way to Vicksburg. Then, at Chalk Bluff on May 1st, the Union looks to drive Confederate Marmaduke and his troops out of Chalk Bluff. To end the episode, we have the important battle of Raymond, Mississippi on May 12th which was needed to provide a clear path to Vicksburg. Another major battle and another Confederate victory. The victory of Chancellorsville by Lee and his army led to some calling it "Lee's perfect battle." However, that came at a cost as this is the battle that ultimately took the life of Stonewall Jackson and Lee's "right arm"

First up, it's the siege of Suffolk in Virginia as Confederate James Longstreet looks to possibly take the Union Garrison there which took place from April 11th to May 4th. Then, Union MG Nathaniel P. Banks is ordered to attack Port Hudson, but on his way there he is held up by Confederate MG Richard Taylor with the small battles of Fort Bisland, Irish Bend, and Vermillion Bayou which took place from April 12th to the 17th.

We start out in Brentwood TN, with the battle of Brentwood then move to North Carolina for the battle of Washington. Next, it's the first battle of Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, and we end with the First battle of Franklin also in Tennessee.

This week we have 4 battles although they are 4 very short battles. First up, while reconnoitering near Columbia, Union forces surrender to the Rebels at the battle of Thompson's Station in Tennessee on March 5th, 1863. March 13-15 in the battle of Fort Anderson the Union pick up a victory. Confederate's pick up the win in Jelly's Ford on March 17th and the Union answer back with a win at Vaught's Hill on the 20th of March.

The Yazoo Pass Expedition took place from February 3rd to April 12th, 1863. Major General Grant and Rear Admiral Porter attempt to bypass the Confederate defenses on the bluffs near Vicksburg in order to get in position to take the city. Meanwhile, the First Battle of Fort McAllister was a series of naval attacks by the Union to test the operation of new monitors before heading to Charleston. It took place between January 27th to March 3rd, 1863.

On this week's episode we have the small battle of Hartville taking place in Missouri on January 9th-11th. Then, we move to Idaho and take a look at the Bear River Massacre in which the Union army square off against the Shoshone Indians on Januar 29th. We end the episode with another small battle, this time in Dover, Tennessee on February 3rd.

We move on to Texas and the second battle of Galveston on January 1st, 1863, where Confederate MG John B. Magruder looks to expell occupying Union troops from the city. Then, we have the second battle of Springfield on January 8th, in Missouri which is notable for urban house-to-house fighting, which was rare in the war. We end the episode with the battle of Arkansas Post on January 9th-11th. Part of the Vicksburg campaign, the Union hope to capture the fort from the Rebels.

We officially end the year 1862 with the final battle of the Stones River campaign. The battle of Stones River or Second Murfreesboro was fought December 31st-January 2nd 1863 between Braxton Bragg's and William Rosecrans forces. This battle if notable for having the highest number of casualties for both sides of any other major battle of the war.

This week we have another short episode before things pick back up for next week's episode. After the Confederate defeat at Prairie Grove, they fell back to Van Buren. There, on December 28th, 1862, the Union looked to push them out of there as well and secure the region. We end the episode with a short battle at Parker's Cross Roads Dec. 31st, where Union BG Jerimiah C. Sullivan attempted to cut Confederate forces off from withdrawing across the Tennessee river.

We have five battles this weekfor you guys, although they all are small engagements so it's not a very long episode. We are close closing out the year of 1862! We have the following battles: Kinston on December 14th in North Carolina. White Hall on the 16th in North Carolina. Goldsboro on the 17th which rounds out the last 3 battles of the Goldsboro campaign. Then, we move to Tennessee on the 19th with the battle of Jackson. We close the episode with the battle of Chickasaw Bayou on December 26-29th in Mississippi.

We have made it to the last huge battle of 1862! Taking place between December 11th-15th in Virginia, it is perhaps the most one sided battle of the whole war with Union casualties doubling that of the Confederate's. It is also the largest number of armed men to face off against each other in the entire war. This one was messy.

The battle of Perryville took place October 8th, 1862 in the state of Kentucky. The Confederates hope to seize control of the border state of Kentucky and the Union obviously try to prevent that and control the state for themselves. It was the largest battle in Kentucky during the war.

Fresh off the heels of Antietam the war rages on. We move to Mississippi for the battle of Iuka, fought on September 19th, 1862 in the opening battle of the Iuka-Corinth Campaign. The Union's Ulysses S. Grant faces off against the Confederate's Sterling Price. Then we move back to West Virginia where McClellan and Lee are still facing off, this time in Shepherdstown which took place September 19th-20th.

The bloodiest day in American history. The battle of Antietam had a combined tally of 22,717 dead, wounded, or missing, the largest single day losses of the war and fifth highest casualty battle of the war. With a win, it turned the Union war effort around and led to Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and ended any hopes the Confederacy had of France and Britain taking their side in the war.

We have a short episode for you as we lead into the bloody battle of Antietam. First up, we have the battle of Charleston fought on September 13, 1862 in what is now West Virginia where the Confederates aim to take over the town. Next, we have the battle of Munfordville in Kentucky where the Confederates attempt to impair the Union supply line. Last, we have the battle of South Mountain and the lead in to the battle of Antietam as both armies try and control 3 mountain passes which the Union needs in order to pursue Lee's army.

On this episode we have a few small battles leading up to Second Bull Run. We go to Missouri for the First Battle of Independence on August 11th, as well as the battle of Lone Jack immediately following that. Then, we have the Union facing off against Dakota Indians at Fort Ridgely in Minnesota on August 21-22. We end the episode with two battle that lead directly into Second Bull Run. The first, Rappahannock Station takes place on August 22-27 and the last is Manassas Station Operations where Stonewall Jackson sets the stage for the big one.
