Kowloon Walled City was once the most crowded place on Earth, packed with 33,000 people crammed into just 6.4 acres in Hong Kong. Imagine a giant maze of dark, narrow alleys, with apartments stacked so tightly that sunlight barely reached the ground. The buildings were built chaotically, with little planning, so the city became a lawless labyrinth. Despite this, people lived normal lives—there were schools, shops, and even dentists operating in tiny, makeshift spaces. It was demolished in 1994 to make way for a park, but its memory still fascinates people as a symbol of both resilience and chaos. This may happen to anybody: you're walking home and suddenly notice that somebody is following you. Your natural reaction – having a panic attack – won’t help, but there are several ways how to protect yourself from being attacked or robbed. Remember, you should stay alert at all times. Any time you're going home, taking a dog for a walk, strolling the streets on your own, stay focused and observant. Glance around and behind yourself every half a minute or so. Try to notice everything out of the ordinary and analyze the situation. And if your instinct or reason tells you that somebody is stalking you, it's time for some actions. In case you’re sure you’re being followed, try to lose them. Cross the street as if you need to do this. If you're lucky, they may even lose you in a crowd, around a building, or behind cars. Check who is following you - confront the danger head-on. What is more, you immediately alert the person who is after you that you're well aware that they are on your tail. Sometimes, it's enough to cause a person to stop. Call your friends or, if you’re in immediate danger, call the police. If your cell phone's battery is dead or you can't use it, enter any establishment on your way, inform them that you're being followed, and ask them to call the police. If you decide to run away, go to areas full of people: first of all, your stalker may lose you among other people; secondly, they will unlikely hurt you or rob in front of others. If the criminal gets ahold of you, be cooperative, listen to the criminal, don't talk, and follow their instructions. If a person threatens you with a knife or a gun, such cooperation will lower the chances that they will harm you. If you understand that you're being attacked, use everything you have at hand to fight off the criminal. Scientists found a fossilized skull of an ancient animal called Elasmotherium sibiricum, and it might be the closest thing to a real unicorn that ever existed. The International Date Line (IDL) is one of the weirdest things on the map—it’s not a straight line at all! It zigzags to avoid splitting countries, islands, and even some communities into different days, which would be super confusing. Imagine one side of your house being a day ahead of the other! There’s a bizarre object out in space that’s not a star and not a planet, but it’s hotter than the Sun! It’s called a “brown dwarf,” sometimes nicknamed a “failed star.” Brown dwarfs are too small to start nuclear fusion like real stars, but they’re much bigger and hotter than regular planets. One brown dwarf, called WD 0032-317B, is especially strange because it gets heated up by a nearby white dwarf (a super-hot leftover core of a dead star). This makes its atmosphere reach temperatures of over 14,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than the surface of our Sun! It’s a wild example of how weird and surprising the universe can be. The Earth is round, Mercury is the hottest planet, and the Sun is yellow. It would seem that these are all simple, undeniable facts known even to those with no real knowledge of astronomy. However, it’s time to think again. The truth is that the period the Moon takes to revolve on its axis coincides with the amount of time it takes to orbit the Earth. That’s why we only see one side of it. Mercury is closest to the Sun; therefore, its surface temperature must be higher than all the other planets. However, the hottest planet in the Solar System is actually Venus, despite the fact it’s 31,070,000 miles (50 million km) further away from the Sun than its neighbor. What we think of as fire is, in fact, energy in the form of heat and light, produced by the thermonuclear reactions occurring in the star’s core. A thermonuclear reaction involves changing some elements into others, and it’s accompanied by the ejection of heat and light energy. Why do human eyes see the Sun as yellow? It’s all down to Earth’s atmosphere. As is well known, light which has a long wavelength, in the yellow and red part of the spectrum, passes through the atmosphere best of all. Light in shorter wavelengths, in the green to violet part of the spectrum, gets dissipated to a greater degree by the atmosphere. Our skin is flexible enough to keep all of our internal organs in place. The walls of the blood vessels would also prevent the blood from boiling thanks to their elasticity. Moreover, in the absence of external pressure in the space environment, the temperature at which blood boils rises to 115°F, which is significantly higher than the temperature of the human body. The axis of the planet, which passes through the North and South Poles, is not exactly perpendicular to its orbit and the Sun’s rays which fall on it. In turn, for half of the year, a large proportion of the Sun’s warmth falls on the southern hemisphere, while in the other half it falls on the northern one, which produces a change of seasons. The shape of our planet is constantly changing due to the constant movement of the continental plates. Of course, the rate at which they move is tiny — on average about 2 inches (5 cm) a year. When accompanied with other red flags like loss of appetite, then this behavior definitely warrants a call to the vet. A lot of the time, begging becomes such a routine for cats that they start doing it even when they're not hungry. Another possible reason is your kitty's desire for attention and love. When you leave the room, they feel vulnerable to predators, so they decide to follow you. And believe it or not, a lot of the time the bathroom is the place where they feel the safest! In 2017, Air Canada Flight 759 came terrifyingly close to causing one of the worst aviation disasters ever at San Francisco International Airport. The plane was supposed to land on a clear runway but instead started descending onto a taxiway where four fully loaded planes were waiting to take off. The pilots mistook the taxiway for the runway in the dark, coming within 14 feet of hitting another plane. A quick-thinking air traffic controller yelled for the Air Canada pilots to abort their landing at the last second. The plane pulled up just in time, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic pile-up that could’ve affected hundreds of lives. Experts later said it was sheer luck and sharp reactions that prevented tragedy that night. If the oceans suddenly vanished, the continents would still be separated by deep trenches and valleys left behind by the water. Instead of walking or driving to another continent, you'd have to navigate rocky, uneven terrain filled with underwater mountains and volcanoes. Some places might be connected by land bridges, like Siberia and Alaska, but others would still be impossible to cross without special gear. Plus, the lack of water would create extreme weather, with no oceans to regulate temperatures or produce rain. So, while it sounds like a fun idea to explore the ocean floor, it would actually be a super challenging and dangerous journey. Astronauts have seen some truly creepy things out in space! One time, a crew on the Apollo 10 mission heard strange, "outer space music" while orbiting the Moon, and it gave them chills. Then there are unexplained flashes of light that astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) report seeing, even with their eyes closed—scientists think they might be cosmic rays zipping through their retinas! Another eerie moment came when Chris Hadfield, a famous astronaut, once saw what looked like a flying object outside the ISS—but it turned out to be a chunk of frozen liquid. The difference is that kidney pain is deeper under the ribs, while muscle pain is usually lower. Problems with the small intestine usually cause pain in the navel region. If the pain persists and causes discomfort when bending or walking, don’t put off a visit to a doctor. Issues with the large intestine are usually associated with pain in the lower abdomen, closer to the right side.  The lungs themselves don’t feel pain due to a lack of nerve endings. But if something’s wrong with them, you may feel a dull ache in your chest. The appendix is located in the lower right region of the abdomen, but pain may affect the whole stomach area or its separate parts. The pain may also travel to your right thigh. Other signs of issues with the appendix are nausea, vomiting, fever, and constipation or diarrhea. Gastric problems cause pain in the middle abdominal region above the ribs and can also appear on the same level in the back. Gallbladder and liver problems may cause pain in the upper right region of the abdomen. It can also travel to the same place in the back. Liver issues are also associated with a wide range of symptoms, such as a sour taste in the mouth and jaundice. Pancreatic problems are indicated by pain in the middle part of the upper abdominal region. However, a less intense pain may also travel to the whole stomach.
