We cover some characters you might not know about or you wan too learn more about. This is the perfect show for both those who only know these characters from the movies and for hardcore comic book readers. Check the show notes for the key issues we discuss.
- 274 - Joshua Williamson's Flash Volume 13 to Volume 15
Apologies for the delayed release. Baby Dpalm came a bit early and so we've been on a little hiatus
Thankfully we recorded the final episode in our Flash series earlier in the month. So without further ado, the finale of the Joshua Williamson run.
We end this run as any good Flash run should with a finale showdown between Barry and Eobard. Throughout the 15 volumes, we got a really good reintroduction of Barry Allen that paid homage to the entire Flash legacy. We get the return and reunion of the Flash Family from the Wally years (Jay, Bart, Max and more) which has been teased all run and then finally comes back together. This run really solidifies why Rebirth really was something different for DC. Instead of running from their past they embraced it and used to to create a new legacy. This is what makes this run so much fun to read.
Issues:
* Volume 13 Rogues Reign
* Volume 14 The Flash Age
* Volume 15 Finish Line

Fri, 01 Sep 2023 - 44min - 273 - Joshua Williamson’s Flash Volumes Year One & Volume 12
We know last episodes we covered Year One but we decided to revisit that volume as well as volume 12 of the Williamson run of The Flash. Year One was worth a revisit because it not only reestablishes some of the lost history of Barry Allen but also starts off a new one as well (Barry meeting not only Wally but Wallace at the same time). It also takes a villain that we didn't think twice about and make him terrifying. Who would think the Turtle would be so scary?
Then we get a return of Hunter Zolomon and we get an update to the great Blitz storyline. Turns out the clown DID have a gun. And through that all, Snart and the original rogues start putting their final plan in place.
Issues:
* The Flash Year One
* Volume 12: Death and the Speed Force

Sun, 30 Jul 2023 - 42min - 272 - Joshua Williamson’s Flash Volumes 10, 11 & Year One
We delayed the release of this episode until Kriss was out of town. We also timed it right around the time the Flash review dropped. Enjoy.
Post Flash War, Barry turns back into a student and has to go through a bit of a re-education phase. This fits right in with the Joshua Williamson theme of taking Barry Allen on a journey we really haven't seen him in before. A lot of this feels familiar to those of us who grew up with Wally West as our Flash because we watched him go through the same journey. With Barry, its not only about him really studying the speed force but also learning that a Flash doesn't run alone. It's also really interesting to read the journey that Barry is on while also reading the journey that Batman is on in the King books. You'd like Bruce would be the depressed sounding pessimist but it's actually Barry.
Issues:
* Volume 10: Force Quest
* Volume 11: The Greatest Trick of All
* Year One

Sat, 10 Jun 2023 - 52min - 271 - Joshua Williamson's Flash Volumes 7 - 9 - Character Corner #111
We're back with more of Joshua Williamson's Flash run. This time we're talking volumes 7 to 9 (issues 39 to 57). Williamson's run really feels like a great jumping on point for the Flash. Since it's during Rebirth, it gives us a great reintroduction of not only Barry Allen and Eobard Thawne but also Wally West. This part of the run felt like Williamson telling all of us that grew up with Wally as our Flash that his years as the Flash mattered. And while this series is centered on Barry, it felt good to get acknowledgement of Wally's years (decades) as the Flash.
Issues:
* The Flash Volume 7: Perfect Storm
* The Flash Volume 8: Flash War
* The Flash Volume 9: Reckoning of the Forces

Tue, 23 May 2023 - 52min - 270 - Joshua Williamson's Flash Volumes 4 to 6 - Character Corner #110
We promised 2 episodes in March and we're squeezing it right in there at the 11th hour. But we're back for the next set of issues from the Joshua Williamson Flash run. We first stop over at Batman and pick up with The Button which takes us closer to understanding the forces behind all the lost time and history in the DC Universe. But it also reminds us that Eobard Thawne is the epitome of evil. The way he beats Bruce's ass in the Batcave is a good reminder that speed beats prep time. It's not just the Button though. After being largely absent in the first three volumes, Thawne features heavily in the next set of volumes for The Flash. And ends up dying...twice. If the first three volumes were a reintroduction of Barry Allen, these next set of volumes are a reminder of why Eobard Thawne is one of the scariest and evil villains in DC. Death doesn't stop him. And when we get the reveal of why he's become a mortal enemy of Barry Allen and it's the most petty, insignificant thing; It's just a good reminder of why this type of person is such a problem.
Issues:
* Batman/The Flash: The Button
* The Flash Volume 4: Running Scared
* The Flash Volume 5: Negative
* The Flash Volume 6: Cold Day in Hell

Fri, 31 Mar 2023 - 54min - 269 - Joshua Williamson's Flash Volumes 1 - 3 - Character Corner #109
We finally get back into recording Character Corners and it still takes me 2 weeks to release the episode. Smh. Sorry for the delay folks but we're finally hitting the Joshua Williamson run of The Flash. We consider this the reintroduction of Barry Allen. Sure in 2009 Geoff Johns did a "rebirth" of Barry Allen, having him finally return to the mantle after being dead for so long. But this run during DC's rebirth really gets Barry back to the basics. Anyone that's read this run knows it comes back down to Barry vs Thawne but the way this run starts off, it removes some of the staples like Thawne and the Rogues and focuses first on undoing some of the mistakes from New 52. We start with Wally coming back then there are hints of Jay as well. And of course the most important thing: how naive Barry is and how he runs into situations without seeing the big picture.
We start with the first three volumes and when we come back we'll hit The Button (the crossover with Batman and setup for Doomsday Clock).
Issues:
* The Flash Volume 1: Lightning Strikes Twice
* The Flash Volume 2: Speed of Darkness
* The Flash Volume 3: Rogues Reloaded

Sat, 25 Mar 2023 - 50min - 268 - She-Hulk Attorney at Law - Character Corner #108
Now that the first season of the She-Hulk series on Disney+ is over, now is a great time to talk about She-Hulks comic book history. The timing has nothing to do with the fact that Kriss is late on releasing this episode because work has completely swamped him. Nope, this timing is completely planned.
Anyway, after seeing some of the confused reactions to the Disney+ show, it actually is a pretty good time to remind folks just who Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk is and how writers have tackled that character over the years. First off, the show pulled their tone from John Byrne's classic time writing the character in the 1989 Sensational She-Hulk series. Yes, She-Hulk is a Hulk with incredible strength but she's also be written as a smart, funny character that has no problems crawling outside of the comic panels to challenge her writers/artists (sound familiar?). But aside from that, this character has always been about a woman challenging the male driven world around her. In the comics, Jen prefers to be in her She-Hulk form because that's the form that makes her feel powerful, invincible and capable of standing up to the world around her. That leads to some really funny moments (like her getting kicked out of Avengers mansion for being too wild).
Post Civil War 2 sees a change for the character. The death of her cousin Bruce at the hands of fellow Avenger Hawkeye (and his subsequent acquittal) puts Jen on a path where she channel's Bruce's troubles with the Hulk and becomes uncontrollable when she transforms. She's consumed by anger and fear and that is explored as she finally reconciles her two halves.
Overall the key issues for She-Hulk really do put new perspective on the show and highlight where the show pulled not only its tone but some of its arcs.
Issues:
* Savage She-Hulk #1
* Avengers #221
* Secret Wars
* Fantastic Four #265
* The Sensational She-Hulk (1989 - 1994)
* Issues 1 - 8
* Issues #34 & #40
* Avengers #64 - 76 (1998)
* She-Hulk (Dan Slott's run)
* Volume 1: Issues 1 - 12
* Volume 2
* Avengers Disassembled
* Civil War 2

Fri, 28 Oct 2022 - 51min - 267 - Dick Grayson/Nightwing
Kriss and Dpalm are back and this time we're revisiting a character we've spent some time talking about before: Dick Grayson aka Nightwing. We've covered Dick before in our previous Robin Part 1 Character Corner that covered Dick Grayson's years as the first Robin along with Jason Todd. This episode we're spending some time talking about his years after he put up the Robin suit and became Nightwing.
Much like his best friend Wally West, Dick Grayson is one of those characters that started off as a sidekick but then became their own hero and eventually even took over the mantle. What's so great about this character is how both similar and different he is from Bruce Wayne/Batman. Dick Grayson is what Bruce would be if Bruce Wayne didn't hate being Bruce Wayne.
Issues:
* The Judas Contract
* The New Teen Titans #39
* The New Teen Titans #40
* Tales of the Teen Titans #42
* Tales of the Teen Titans #43
* Tales of the Teen Titans #44 - First appearance of Dick Grayson as Nightwing
* Tales of the Teen Titans #3
* Robin Year 1
* Nightwing Volume 1 (1995)
* 4 issue miniseries and first Nightwing solo book
* Nightwing Volume 2 (1996)
* Issue #25 - Tim and Dick ride the train
* Nightwing Year 1
* Nightwing vol2 101 - 106
* Birds of Prey #8
* Batman Knightfall
* Battle for the Cowl
* Grayson
* Nightwing Rebirth

Thu, 25 Aug 2022 - 57min - 266 - SDCC 2022 Announcements & Trailers
Life has gotten really busy for Kriss and Dpalm so the regular Character Corner schedule has been a bit hectic these last few months. But thankfully Marvel has swooped in for a rescue by announcing a bunch of things for their next few phases of movies so that gives us a lot to talk about.
In this episode we'll talk about some of the trailers and announcements made for movies and TV shows coming out of SDCC. Not all of them involve Marvel and DC. We got the first teaser for the new John Wick and Amazon dropped a new trailer for their really really really expensive Lord of the Rings show. But of course, this is a comic podcast so we're gonna want to focus on the comic book movies and TV shows that we got a look at. Unfortunately for DC fans, WB didn't really bring a lot. We all knew we weren't gonna hear anything about The Flash because...reasons. But WB only showed Shazam Fury of the Gods and Black Adam in a puzzlingly light presentation. They didn't even lean on their successes like Peacemaker or even The Batman (which dropped this year but it seems like everyone has just forgotten about). No Aquaman either. It's all just really puzzling.
And then Marvel came out and it was the complete opposite. A firehose of information about the end of Phase 4 and what's planned for Phases 5 & 6. And boy is it a lot. Then there's "that trailer". The Wakanda Forever trailer is a rollercoaster of emotion and we can't wait until November to see it.
Listen as we break down what we saw and have some light speculation.

Thu, 28 Jul 2022 - 1h 21min - 265 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 10: Secret Wars - Character Corner #106
We wrap up our Avengers part of our Hickman series with the 9-issue Secret Wars event that sees Hickman rebuild the Marvel Universe first in Doom's vision then from Reed's. Secret Wars is one of those events where you don't have to read all the related non-Hickman written issues to understand the story but you want to. It's a good cap to the end of the story Hickman has been telling not only from Avengers but all the way back to SHIELD. Also, just like in Time Runs Out you start to see where he lays the seeds for what he later does in X-Men.
There is one more episode we're doing in this Hickman series and it will be to cover Hickman's run on X-Men and the new dynamic he created for mutants in the Marvel Universe. But before that we're going to head over to the DC world to talk about Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing.

Wed, 08 Jun 2022 - 43min - 263 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 9: Time Runs Out
With the mention of the word "Incursions" in Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness its timely for us to reach the "Time Runs Out" portion of our Into the Hickmanverse series. This is the lead up to Secret Wars and its basically Hickman destroying the Marvel Universe. All of it. Time Runs Out is actually jarring at first because there is an 8 month story gap. The Avengers have split. The Illuminati is on the run with new members. The Captain Britain Corp has been wiped out. The Cabal is given free rein to destroy other worlds. So much has happened and Hickman takes his time explaining it all.
We also get the reveal of who "Rabum Alal" is and it's...Doctor Doom. Hickman does what he always does and calls his shot and takes us back to the beginning. And not just this series but all of his series. At one point the Illuminati takes refuge in the Immortal City that we saw Nathaniel Richards and Howard Stark as members of S.H.I.E.L.D. There's also some connections to Secret Warriors. And you really start to wonder if "All Hope Lies in Doom" from the Fantastic Four series with Val & Franklin from the future was also talking about the work that Doom is doing in this series that leads to him confronting the Beyonders.
And then there are the hints at future Hickman stories. Like when Scott talks about the name of the game being "resurrection". Knowing what we know now about Hickman's time on X-Men and it seems like he called his shot here as well.
Every time we read this series we pick up something new. By the end of Time Runs out there's only two universes left: 616 and 1610. And that's where we will pick this all back up with Secret Wars in the next episode.

Fri, 20 May 2022 - 1h 04min - 262 - Moon Knight - The Fist of Khonshu
We're back with another Character Corner episode and this time we're talking about the character Moon Knight. Or should we say the characters Marc Spector/Steven Grant/Jake Lockley. Moon Knight is an interesting character to cover. First appearing in 1975 in Werewolf By Night, its pretty clear that early Moon Knight was Marvel's answer to DC's Batman. There's so many obvious comparisons. Early on in Moon Knight stories, Marc Spector wasn't suffering from mental illness. Rather his three personalities were actually cover aliases for him. Interestingly enough, all his aliases also seem to line up with aspects of Bruce Wayne. You have the Billionaire playboy Steven Grant. The highly skilled mercenary Marc Spector. Then there's the seedy Jake Lockley that is clearly based off of Matches Malone (who first appeared in 1972 in Batman comics). Then there's the Moon Knight concept itself. Dressed in all white (versus the all black of Batman), a hero of the night that looks at himself as the "spirit of vengeance" and taking out those criminals that prey on the weak.
But then Marvel started to put some space between the characters by introducing Khonshu, the Moon God that took Marc Spector has his priest (or fist depending on how you look at it). Instead of some internal drive to make criminals fear him because of the murder of his parents, Spector is driven to fight crime because his God commands it. Or is it that he's just insane? Or both? Later comics definitely show that Khonshu is a very real (and petty and vengeful God). And it's Khonshu that has pretty much driven Marc insane. But it makes for a really interesting character and some very good comics to read (except for the Bendis run. Don't do that to yourselves).

We're getting closer to the end of out Hickman Marvel series and things are starting to fall apart for everyone. In the two series we watch as Steve not only remembers what the Illuminati did to him but also becomes hardened in his decision that they are wrong and must be stopped. On the New Avengers side, we watch as the Illuminati becomes even more broken. T'Challa, Namor and Black Bolt are all Kings without Kingdoms. Dr. Strange has sacrificed everything. Reed has pretty much given up his family (and we saw in Hickman's Fantastic Four run what happens when Reed does that). Beast and Banner are facing a crisis of humanity. And Tony...well Tony is definitely broken but he also seems to be the only one that truly understands how all this is going to end.
We will tackle Time Runs Out in the next part and we see that like before, All Hope Lies in Doom.

Thu, 31 Mar 2022 - 54min - 260 - Legion of Super-Heroes Part 2 - Reboots and More Reboots
Reboots are a thing that happens all the time in comic books. But there are reboots and retcons and then there's what DC Comics did with the Legion of Super-Heroes. I take back what I said during part 1. The Legion of Super-Heroes might have the most complex and complicated history in DC. Yes that's over Wonder Woman and the Hawks. See, with the Legion, you take the confusion and complicated histories of Wonder Woman and Hawkman. Add in the time traveling of ALL the Flash characters. Sprinkle in some good ole "unnecessary DC Editorial decisions". Then...MAKE ALL THE HISTORY MATTER. That's the Legion of Super-Heroes.
There's at least 6 different origins, 5 of them unique. What's really interesting is that outside of the 5 Years Later/Glorithverse reboot (seriously, its terrible don't read it), all the reboots are pretty decent reads. This means you can find a team you like and have a decent run reading them. Sure they'll be rebooted for no reason sometimes but...come on...it's comics. That happens.
We cover each of the reboots (and some of the behind the scenes mess) in this episode. Don't know how we covered it all in two episodes but we did. Check out Part 1 here. We'll be back in a bit to head back to the Hickmanverse and the Avengers soon.

Wed, 16 Mar 2022 - 1h 28min - 259 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 7: Avengers Part 2 - Infinity
We're back for Part 7 of our Into the Hickmanverse series as we got through the world in Marvel that Hickman has built. After looking at what we have remaining, there will be 11 total parts. We'll get the way through Secret Wars with Part 10 and for Part 11 we'll talk about the new age of X-Men that Hickman has ushered in. Before that though, things are starting to heat up in Hickman's Avengers story with the Infinity Crossover.
There are three main stories here and they’re all connected.
Thanos searching for his Inhuman son...so that he can kill him
The Avengers go to space to stop the Builders who are conquering and destroying worlds on their bee-line to Earth
The Illuminati stuck between #1 & #2: Helping stop the Thanos invasion (also helping Black Bolt) and Dealing with an incursion that leads to them having a chat with a Builder from another universe
This is where we start seeing more and more things come together for Hickman's vision. The theme of Life/Death is very heavy here in all the books. From Thane/Thanos to how the Avengers deal with the galactic threat versus the Illuminati. We also get some of the call backs to his Fantastic Four run, like with the Bridge being recalibrated to look at other worlds and how they dealt with incursions. Then there's the hints of how much worse things are going to get.

Fri, 25 Feb 2022 - 1h 06min - 258 - The Legion of Super-Heroes Part 1: The Great Darkness Saga
So for the 100th episode of the Character Corner, Kriss & Dpalm are finally back on the DC side and we decided we didn't want to make it easy on ourselves and so we’re tackling the Legion of Super-Heroes. The the history of the Legion of Super-Heroes is one that rivals Wonder Woman, Donna Troy and Hawkman as having some oof the most convoluted and rebooted/retconned history on the DC side. There are several reasons for why the history of the Legion is so hard to pin down. Part of that is like with a lot of these characters, it was never the plan for them to be around as long as they were. That coupled with a few other things make the Legion really hard to follow a history on:
* They’re from the future. The 30th century (and 31st century) and time travel almost always makes things messy
* Their history is centered around Superboy
So the first isn’t too big of a deal. there’s a lot of characters in DC history that play around with time. But when it comes to tying the characters to to Superboy…the follow up question has to be: Which One?
Now we’ve covered Superboy's history on another episode but there’s going to be some overlap here. Particularly in the early years of the Legion.
Remember, there is a version of Superboy, particular the one we’re talking about with the Legion that is a version of Clark Kent that later grows up to become Superman. Some other notable Superboy versions:
* Superboy Prime - From earth prime. Earth destroyed during Crisis. Becomes a villain
* The Metropolis Kid/Connor Kent (the clone)
But for the Legion, we're talking Earth-1 Superboy (Later Pocket Universe Superboy which we will get into in episode 2). For this episode we keep it nice and simple and cover all the way up to the Great Darkness Saga which is still pre-crisis and before things get all weird. We focus mostly on how the concepts and early stories for the Legion of Super-Heroes really laid the groundwork for a lot of modern stories both in and out of comics. In episode 2 we'll really dive down into some of the specific characters as well as try to unwrap the craziness that happens post-crisis.
Issues:
* Adventure Comics #247 - First Appearance
* First Appearance of Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad/Boy

Tue, 01 Feb 2022 - 1h 00min - 257 - Pull List: So Many Comics, So Little Time - Character Corner #99
First Character Corner episode of 2022 and it's a Pull List. There are a lot of comics for Kriss and Dpalm to talk about. The biggest problem? There are so many great and good comics out right now. It's really hard to keep up. Of course this is a good problem to have (unless you're on a budget). At this point with so many good books out there, the best thing to do right now is to not only follow titles but writers.
On the DC Side, if you see that James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson and Tom Taylor are writing a book, you should be reading it. Tynion's Justice League vs Vampires isn't canon but is pretty good. Taylor's Nightwing also continues to be really good. Williamson is on Batman and of course that is good. If you have a DC Universe Infinite subscription, now is a great time to pick up on Bendis' run on Superman and Action Comics as well as the story he's telling in Justice League.
When it comes to Marvel, the Star Wars books are still great. War of the Bounty Hunters has ended and leads right into Crimson Reign. With certain characters from these books popping up in the Disney+ shows, good money could be placed on seeing more of the Crimson Dawn popping up more and more. On the super hero side, much like DC, it's worth picking a few writers to catch up on. Kelly Thompson has been doing wonders on Captain Marvel and it's definitely worth catching up on. Chip zdarsky's Daredevil is fantastic. If you see anything written by Donny Cates, Jason Aaron or Kieron Gillen, read it. Gillen is actually going to be writing Immortal X-Men come March and after the events of Inferno, definitely can't wait to see what he does there. Gillen is currently writing Eternals (which is fantastic) and considering Marvel is teasing a future Avengers vs X-Men vs Eternals event, things could get very interesting.

Mon, 17 Jan 2022 - 1h 17min - 256 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 6: Avengers & New Avengers Part 1
We're ending 2021 with the beginning of the end. We've started Hickman's epic Avengers/New Avengers run. This is one of our favorite runs. We've covered it several times from Comic Book Book Clubs on premium to when we cover individual characters like Black Panther, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. This time we're covering it from the perspective of looking at how Hickman sets up and builds out this really long story. If you read these books in their individual release date order and not by the volumes, the story tends to hit a bit different. You start to realize things like, Avengers is really just Tony babysitting Steve and building out a more powerful Avengers team after the Illuminati mind-wiped Steve. Avengers also introduces us to The Builders & Builder Code as well as the fact that the Universe is sick. It's like reading Avengers shows you the symptoms of the problem while New Avengers shows just how bad the illness is.
We end this first part right before the Infinity event starts up. Part 2 will cover that before we hit the home stretch to Time Runs out.
As we bring 2021 to a close, we did want to take a minute and thank all the fans that have stuck with us over these rough last couple of years. Between the pandemic and outside obligations, Dpalm and I have struggled to keep pumping these episodes out every month. We've still managed to do about 1 every month though. While we can't make any promises because no one knows what the future will hold, we're hoping in 2022 to get back to our regular, 2-episodes a month cadence. For episode 99 we'll do a Pull List and talk about all the good comics that are out there that we haven't had a chance until now to catch up on. And then for episode 100, we're going to head back over to DC (finally) and dive into the Legion of Superheroes. Thanks for sticking with us all these years and we hope you all have a safe and happy holidays.

Thu, 30 Dec 2021 - 50min - 255 - Shang-Chi Master of Kung Fu
Kriss and Dpalm are finally back with a new Character Corner episode. This time we're talking about the Marvel Master of Kung Fu himself, Shang-Chi. We decided to wait until after we talked about the movie before diving into this character and for good reason. See, there's really no nice way to say this but the history of Shang-Chi is pretty racist. From the inception of the character and tying him to the racist Fu Manchu character all the way to even more modern books with the character that rely on how "foreign" he is. Shang-Chi is a character that has really suffered from good intentions that still fall short. Outside of the varying degrees of racism, the character has also suffered from being stagnant and not growing. A lot of that has changed though with the most recent solo series for the character. In the last year or so, Shang-Chi has grown in depth and his solo books have been really great.
For this episode we do a little less going into the step-by-step history of the character and focus more on the most interesting aspects, the racism & problems that plagued the early books and why the new books really have opened up some new possibilities for the character.
Issues:
* Special Marvel Edition #15 - First Appearance
* For old school Shang-Chi books it's best to read the different Omnibus
* Deadly Hands of Kung Fu Omnibus Vol 1 & 2
* Shang-Chi Master of Kung-Fu Omnibus Vol 1 - 4
* Marvel Knights 1 - 15
* Civil War: Heroes For Hire
* Volume 1: Heroes for Hire
* Volume 2: Ahead of the Curve
* Volume 3: World War Hulk
* Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu (2009) - First story is written by Jonathan Hickman & is Deadpool & Shang-Chi in a deadly motorcycle race
* Spider-Island: Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu 1 - 3
* Secret Avengers
* Volume 2: Eyes of the Dragon - Retcons Shang-Chi's father to be Zheng Zu
* 16 - 21
* Avengers World & Avengers Vol 5 (We will dive into these during Part 6 & 7 of Into the Hickmanverse)
* Totally Awesome Hulk #13 - 18
* Domino #1 - 5

Tue, 30 Nov 2021 - 53min - 254 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 5: Ultimate Universe
We're back with part 5 of our Into the Hickmanverse series. This time Hickman teams up with Bendis again to dive into the Ultimate universe. But before we do that, we first have to address how we got here. Yes that means retelling the story (if you can call it that) of Ultimatum and how the Ultimate universe was left in shambles. We then cover Bendis' trilogy (Ultimate Enemy, Ultimate Mystery and Ultimate Doom) that casts the Ulimate Universe's Reed Richards as a villain.
All of that sets the stage for Hickman to come in and tell his story. But first he gives us a little background on Ultimate Thor and retells the story of Ragnarok. Then Hickman tells the story he was telling in Fantastic Four but this time with another evil Reed Richards. The story of "The Maker". Again, this is all laying the groundwork for what Hickman will be doing next: Avengers. We'll be back soon to tell that in a three-part series soon.
Issues:
* Pre-Hickman
* Ultimate Enemy 1 -4
* Ultimate Mystery 1- 4
* Ultimate Doom 1 - 4
* Ultimate Comics Thor 1 -4
* Ultimate Comics Fallout 1 - 6
* Ultimate Comics Ultimates 1 - 6

Mon, 01 Nov 2021 - 57min - 253 - Into the Hickmanverse: Fantastic Four Part 2
The latest part of our Into the Hickmanverse series by wrapping up his Fantastic Four run. This covers both Fantastic Four and FF (Future Foundation).
We kick everything off with the new series, FF as well as some new uniforms for Marvel's first family. Also, Spider-Man comes in to fill in the spot left by Johnny. Things really take off here. First on the list of things for the Future Foundation to do: Solve the issue of Doom's diminished intelligence. The next thing? Get some of the Fantastic Four's most intelligent enemies and have them come together to do one thing: Defeat Reed Richards. Since there are now 4 other Reeds from other universes running around thanks to lil ole Val.
As the series goes on Hickman starts to reveal what's really going on and why future Val & Franklin are manipulating the past. It all comes down to buying 27 minutes to align everything perfectly to save the universe. And at the heart of that is Doom standing against mad Celestials.
Hickman's run ends with him laying the groundwork for his big event (Time Runs Out/Secret Wars) that is still a few series away. We get the returning of Black Bolt and the Inhumans to earth as well as the bonding of Reed Richards and T'Challa. These have big impacts later on in the New Avengers run when these three link back up as members of the Illuminati that's trying to stop the incursions.
But before we get into all that, we need to take a trip over to the Ultimate universe where Hickman apparently took a look and said "Here I can build".
Issues:
* FF Volume 1
* FF #1 - #5
* FF Volume 2
* FF #6 - #11
* Story alternates between FF & Fantastic Four going forward
* Fantastic Four #600

Fri, 22 Oct 2021 - 47min - 252 - Into the Hickmanverse: Fantastic Four Part 1
We're finally back to our series covering Jonathan Hickman's Marvel runs. This time we're revisiting his great Fantastic Four run. We start first with the Dark Reign mini-series and then cover issues 570 to 588 in Fantastic Four.
The great thing about reading a Hickman run is when you go back to read it and realize he's laid the groundwork for the next series he's going to write. Throughout the beginning of his FF run we see the seeds of what Hickman will do when he starts his Avengers run.
The Dark Reign mini-series gives us an important foundation for the rest of Hickman's FF run. First, it reveals that Franklin's powers are back when he uses a toy gun to shoot real bullets at Norman Osborne. Then there's Reed building and using the Bridge which will come into play in Hickman's Avengers run. It also introduces The Council of Reeds. More importantly though, this series digs into Reed Richards obsession with "solving everything" and his hubris of "I alone can fix it".
The main Fantastic Four run picks up with where Hickman left off in Dark Reign. We also get the reveal of why the 616 Reed Richards is the best Reed: Because he still had his father. We see the results of what happened in the SHIELD series with Nathaniel Richards. Hickman takes it a step further with The Great Hunt, that saw the Nathaniel Richards from all realities hunt and kill each other until only one remained. What's funny is that this story is something we've just seen told in the Loki series. We also get Val revealing to be smarter than her dad, Nu-World, the emergence of the Four Cities, the creation of the Future Foundation and more.
This episode ends with the emotional issues of 587 and 588. 587 sees the last stand and death of Johnny Storm while 588 is the emotional silent issue with the aftermath of his death.
We'll be back to wrap up this run in September. Then after that we'll be moving onto Hickman's Ultimate run and then eventually...Avengers & Secret Wars. Stay tune and remember:
Issues:
* Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #1 - 5
* Fantastic Four #570 - 588
* Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Volume 1
* Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Volume 2
* Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Volume 3
* Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman Volume 4

Our shirts are now on TeePublic:Tue, 31 Aug 2021 - 1h 24min - 251 - Black Widow - Natasha Romanoff
We're back with another Character Corner, this time to talk about Natalia Romanova aka Natasha Romanoff aka The Black Widow. On the surface this seems like a pretty straight forward character. A former Russian spy who was trained to be a femme fatale in a secret Soviet program that was recruited and turned into an ally by Nick Fury. But there ini a lot more to the character. First, Black Widow is yet another example of a Marvel character that has a redemption arc. Like Hawkeye, Vision and Scarlet Witch, Black Widow is yet another character that starts off as a villain only to turn into an Avenger (not just a member but a leader). The difference is, while Natasha became a hero, she never gave up being a spy and would definitely put two in the back of a someone’s head if they deserve it.
The other interesting thing about Black Widow is her mysterious history. The classic Uncanny X-Men #268 reveals a history that goes all the way back to 1941 with Captain America and Logan. There are also issues that reveal she received a modified Soviet version of the Super Soldier serum which is why she hasn’t aged. Then there’s the mysteries of “The Red Room”. All of this leads to a rather interesting character with a history that sometimes changes but at it’s core still remains the same.
Issues:
Tales of Suspense #52 - First Appearance
Avengers #38 - 52 - Redemption arc including turning down joining the Avengers to work for Nick Fury & SHIELD
Amazing Spider-Man #86 - First appearance of the modern Black Widow look
Amazing Adventures #1 - 8
Daredevil
Issues #75 - #92
Issues #92 - 107 - Co-headlines the Daredevil book
* Frank Miller Daredevil Run
* Issues 178 - 190
Inhumans # 5 - First appearance of Yelena Belova
Marvel Knights
Black Widow #1 - 3 (Takes on Yelena Belova)
Marvel Knights #1 - 12
Black Widow 1 - 3 (Greg Rucka)
Black Widow 1 - 6 (Things They Say About Her)

Sun, 22 Aug 2021 - 1h 28min - 250 - Fireworks - Pull List # 9
We're finally back with a new Pull List and there's a lot to talk about. We're really in the new Golden Age of comics. The biggest problem is there are just too many good books to read. The X-Men & X-Men related books alone are worth their weight in gold. Seriously guys...we're terraforming planets and claiming them for mutants now? Also Mystique is gonna burn everything down. Everything.
But the X-Men books aren't the only good thing out right now. DC is doing very well moving on with the next stage of DC Comics with some really exciting things coming forward. The Star Wars books are still great. And Coates' run on Captain America ends and it was glorious.
Here are some of the books we talk about on this Pull List (It is by no means an exhaustive list):
* Robin
* Nightwing
* Batman
* Wonder Woman
* Checkmate
* Power Rangers
* War of the Bounty Hunters (Star Wars Books: Star Wars, Darth Vader, Bounty Hunters, Doctor Aphra)
* Daredevil
* Eternals
* Captain America
* United States of Captain America
* King in Black
* The Hickman Mutantverse

Mon, 02 Aug 2021 - 1h 24min - 249 - Invincible Volumes 21 to 25 - Comic Book Book Club
All good things must come to an end and so it is with our read through the Invincible series. Now it's well known that even the best series have a hard time sticking the landing. How did Invincible do? Well...it stuck the landing. Kirkman really gives this series the ending it deserved and it felt like it came full circle and was completely earned.
Of course it also comes with a lot of brutality and shocking deaths but we would have it now other way because...well...this is Invincible. This was a really great series to read and gives you a taste of what a big superhero epic could be if there was a finite story and end in mind.
Issues:
* Invincible Volume 21: Modern Family
* Invincible Volume 22: Reboot?
* Invincible Volume 23: Full House
* Invincible Volume 24: The End of All Time Part 1

Tue, 13 Jul 2021 - 54min - 248 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 2: S.H.I.E.L.D
Now the fun begins. Secret Warriors gave us a taste of what was in that crazy brain of Hickman. S.H.I.E.L.D. is where we really start to see things form. This is the series that will have readers going back to issue 25 of Secret Warriors to start piecing things together. It's also where the foundations for what Hickman does in his Fantastic Four run gets set.
We not only get the foundation of SHIELD starting way back in ancient Egypt by Imhotep (with a young Apocalypse and Moon Knight) but establishing it as a secret brotherhood whose purpose was/is to stop the premature destruction of mankind. And this highlights what makes Hickman's runs so good. In a way he's a history professor whose main focus is finding the obscure in the Marvel Universe and making it not only relevant, but expanding the universe. Sure, at its core we're getting a fundamental power struggle between Leonardo DaVinci and Sir Isaac Newton about whether man should continue to fight or survival or accept its fate. But outside of that, we're also given a young Howard Stark and Nathaniel Richards as agents of SHIELD. And what happens with both of them is then seen later in how their sons turn out. We see why "our" Reed Richards is so important and different from others. We see why Tony , despite all his flaws, can be one of the most prolific and accomplished (and focused) builders in the universe.
This is the beginning of the theme of fathers and sons and what they owe each other. It's something we're going to continue to see throughout Hickman's runs (especially with Fantastic Four). But we also get the themes of Expansion vs. Contraction, Life vs. Death, Infinite Human Existence vs Inevitability.
Issues:
* S.H.I.E.L.D #1 The Unholy Resurrection of Leonardo da Vinci
* S.H.I.E.L.D #2 Newton's Theory of Eternal Life
* S.H.I.E.L.D # 3 The Theory of Eternal Life
* S.H.I.E.L.D #4 The Madness, the Star Child, and the Celestial Madonna
* S.H.I.E.L.D #5 The Forgotten Machines of Nikola Tesla
* S.H.I.E.L.D # 6 The Master's Hand
* S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #1 Terribilita
* S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #2 Fire
* S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 # 3 The Fall
* S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #4 All Together Now
* S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 #5 Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.
* S.H.I.E.L.D Volume 2 # 6 I Am the Sun
* S.H.I.E.L.D Infinity

Tue, 29 Jun 2021 - 48min - 247 - Into the Hickmanverse Part 1 - Secret Warriors: Wheels within Wheels
So it's time to dive into something really good. We're starting our "Into the Hickmanverse" series where we cover the major Marvel runs of Jonathan Hickman. Now if you've been a long time listener, then you'll know that we've not only talked about the works of Hickman a lot but we've also covered a lot of them already. But you're still not going to want to miss this series. First, while we've covered a lot of these stories already, it's really been all over the place. Some have been Character Corners, some have been premium-only Comic Book Book Clubs and some of the more recent stuff (like the current X-Men run) we've been covering on the Pull-List. But this series is going to be us going (mostly) in chronological order, all in one place. Secondly, we've never done the full Hickman run back-to-back-to-back like we are here. And why does that matter? Well, it lets you see how masterfully Hickman connects all of the dots. It also makes it easier to go back once things start clicking and go "hey, wait a minute...didn't that get mentioned here?"
We're going to ease into it though with Secret Warriors. Something that could have just been a throwaway tie-in series to Dark Reign centered on Nick Fury. And then Hickman had to go an introduce DaVinci and the Great Wheel (and explain nothing) leaving you confused as to "what the hell was that?". Don't worry. It's by design and we'll dig more into it in Part 2 with the SHIELD series. But for now, just have fun reading about the spycraft of Nick Fury vs Baron von Strucker, the trashiest white trash name of all time, the God of Fear, Gorgon becoming a problem and so much more.
Part One: Secret Warriors
1-9, Dark Reign: The List - Secret Warriors, 10-16, Siege: Secret Warriors, 17-28.

Fri, 04 Jun 2021 - 48min - 246 - Invincible Volume 16 to 20
So we're getting close to the end of our Invincible Comic Book Book Club and it would be an understatement to say things have escalated. To be honest, things get so intense in these 5 volumes, I was so traumatized, I thought I had already released this episode. So apologies for the delay but we're finally back.
So what happens in these 5 volumes? Oh nothing, just....
* Allen decides to release the Scourge virus on Earth, knowing that it might kill all the humans on earth as well. Oliver agrees
* Invincible gets hit with concentrated Scourge virus, nearly killing him and taking his powers
* Bulletproof becomes the "Black Invincible"
* Invincible's plan with Dinosaurus goes horribly wrong, surprising no one
* Cecil bans Nolan to the Moon to keep an eye on the other Viltrumites
* Nolan & Mark are revealed to be the direct descendants of Emperor Argall, thereby making Nolan the new and rightful leader of the Viltrumites
* We find out what really happened with Monster Girl & Robot on the Flaxan home dimension and it's way worse than you could imagine
* Anissa rapes Mark
* Angstrom Levy returns
* Mark and Eve have a baby
* Rex/Robot launches his plan for world domination and....wins
So just a few things. Nothing major.

Sun, 30 May 2021 - 47min - 245 - Invincible Volume 11 to 15: Whole Lot of Problems
One of the biggest differences between the Invincible comic series and the Amazon Prime Video adaptation is the pace. The comic really doesn't give you a chance to catch your breath. And just to be clear, that works for the comic media. In these three volumes we get so much. From the "Invincible War" to Conquest to the Viltrumite War (and a bunch of stuff in between), these 5 volumes are jammed with problems for Mark. We get to see Mark struggling with not just being a hero but how. Mark has to ask himself what kind of hero he wants to be and deal with those consequences. Should he kill the truly horrible and evil people that he's come across that have caused so much death, pain and destruction? Or is that the easy way out and there's better ways? We end volume 15 with Mark thinking there's a better way but honestly, it seems like it's just going to lead to more problems.
Overall this has been a really great series to read while watching the TV series. It feels like each offer a really great experience that doesn't taint the other.

Wed, 28 Apr 2021 - 53min - 244 - Barry Allen and the Flash Family Part 2
We're finally back with part 2 of our Barry Allen and the Flash family Character Corner series. We handle this episode a little different than our typical episodes. While we still bring up issues to read, we really focus on the discussion of the evolution of the Flash and the Flash family. Particularly under Mark Waid's run. His run is really what helped define the modern take on The Flash Family and the Speed Force. This run also serves as the bridge between all of the eras of the DC Universe as Waid helped revamp and reintroduce some Golden Age characters like Max Mercury and Johnny Chambers. Waid also brings us the first appearance of Bart Allen from the 31st Century, accompanied by the return of Iris. This run really set up not only Barry's legacy but also was the perfect example of how DC characters can pass the mantle from character to character to build generational connections to characters. Wally West goes from reluctantly filling in his uncle's shoes to becoming the confident Flash for years. After his introduction in Waid's run, Bart is a founding member of Young Justice that eventually leads into another incarnation of the Teen Titans with Bart eventually taking the title Kid Flash. It all works so well...and then Geoff Johns brings back Barry Allen in Rebirth (not the latest Rebirth run). We talk about that decision and how in hindsight it might not have been a wise one and also represents a core problem with DC's approach to their characters.
Issues:
* The Flash Volume 2 - Mark Waid's Run
* Issues #74 - 79: The Return of Barry Allen
* Issue #76: Reintroduction of Max Mercury
* Issue #91: First cameo appearance of Bart Allen
* Issue #92: First full appearance of Bart Allen
* Issues #95 - 100: Terminal Velocity
* First appearance of the Speed Force
* Young Justice Volume 1 (1998)
* Teen Titans Volume 3
* The Flash Fastest Man Alive
* New 52 Flash
* Flash Annual #3 - First appearance of Wallace West

Tue, 13 Apr 2021 - 1h 01min - 243 - Bald Headed Bastards - Pull List # 8
It's the battle of the bald headed bastards (no not Kriss & Dpalm), Zordon and Professor Xavier. Who is more likely to put your kids in a dangerous, life threatening situation? We've determined they're both trash but at least Xavier will shoot you some money on the side after wiping your mind of the fact that you ever had kids. Anyway, we're back with another Pull List. There's plenty to talk about because well...there's just so many good comics to read. Kriss continues to catch up on the Power Rangers books and...they're pretty good. The current Darth Vader book continues the trend of Vader books being fantastic. I believe Emperor Palpatine still has a few strands of hair left so he doesn't cut for our Battle of the Bald Headed Bastards show down but...what a dick. This current series is really driving home the fact that Vader didn't kill Palpatine in Return of the Jedi to save his son but rather because he was finally getting revenge on the bully who spent DECADES trolling him.
On the Marvel Super Hero side we break things down by either on "The Island" (Krakoa) or "Off the Island". RIP to your wallet because all the X-Books are great. And then when you add in Captain America, Captain Marvel, Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, Immortal Hulk (someone please hug Al Ewing), Eternals and more and well...you're gonna go broke. And DC? Well, they're not slouching off either. With Death Metal over, DC is now working on the future of their universe and we're interested.
AND...Kriss is happy to report that DC Universe Infinite (i.e. DC Unlimited) is actually pretty good. DC finally gave us what we wanted for their digital back catalog and while there is definitely room for improvement, it's miles above what they were offering before. So if you were looking for a way to go and read some of the old DC comics, sign up for DC Universe Infinite and get to reading.

Thu, 25 Mar 2021 - 1h 12min - 242 - Cable (Nathan Summers)
With Deadpool 2 hitting theaters this weekend we've finally recorded our Character Corner episode on Nathaniel Christopher Charles Summers, aka, Cable. Now first off, we've touched on a lot of the early years with Nathan/Cable already in some previous Character Corners. We cover Nathan's birth and being sent to the future in the Cyclops & Alex episode as well as him being genetically created specifically to be a weapon against Apocalypse in our Apocalypse & Mister Sinister episode. And if you want more on Deadpool and Cable's relationship, we covered that all the way back in our Deadpool Character Corner.
Now Cable wasn't originally created to be the grown up, future Nathan Summers. Originally Louise Simonson and Rob Liefeld created him to just be a military leader who was the complete opposite of Professor X and would lead the young New Mutants. Things changed rather quickly as the character became more popular and soon it was revealed he was not only Nathan Summers but his clone was Stryfe who founded the Mutant Liberation Front. It only gets stranger and weirder from here and we cover it all. From his half sister from an alternate timeline (Rachel Summers/Grey) to Cable going becoming the protector and father of Hope Summers. There's a lot going on, it can be convoluted but it's all connected. We try to make sense of it all.

Kriss talks with Sam Stevquoah about his own production company's flagship animated project, Mill City's Finest. Sam describes Mill City's Finest as an "urban, superhero coming of age story" in the same vein as Young Justice and Static Shock.
We chat about how Sam got involved in animation, what makes this series so unique and culturally diverse and what's next to get more people behind this project.

Avengers Infinity War is in theaters now and is already crushing records (and souls). While you wait for Avengers 4 to come out, now is a perfect time to catch up on Thanos in the comics to see just how accurate the movie is. But before we can get into Thanos, we first have to give a brief overview of Marvel Cosmic. We've touched on Marvel Cosmic a bit with Inhumans and when we talked Alex Summers. But Thanos throws us right in the middle of it. Jim Starlin really helped solidify the cosmic side of Marvel and so we give a condensed rundown of the Celestials, Eternals, Adam Warlock and more. Trust us, we will revisit all of this more in later episodes in more details.
We then jump forward a bit to go through Jason Aaron's Thanos Rising which while it's more recent (2013), it gives a pretty great (and dark) view of Thanos' origins. Then its back to the early 90's and Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones (or rather, Soul gems as they were called) in Thanos Quest, the Infinity Gauntlet crossover and more.
We end with the recent Thanos solo book that if you're not reading it...you're missing out on greatness.

Sat, 28 Apr 2018 - 1h 22min - 239 - Batman Part 3: The Man Behind the Mask - From Grant Morrison to Tom King
We finish up the Dark Knight himself with what might be the greatest and longest streak of great stories for a solo character. From the time Grant Morrison takes over Batman to today’s Tom King Run, we have what is arguably the best storytelling at DC. It gets weird, it gets crazy and it brings in things all the way from the 50’s & 60’s. If you want to truly understand Bruce Wayne and Batman, pick up the Grant Morrison Batman omnibus and strap in, you’re going to be in for a ride.
But before we get to Morrison, we pick up where we left with Knightfall and Bane breaking the Bat. While not the best, the ending arc (KnightsEnd) sees some really great reflection of Bruce getting to the core of why he matters as Batman. After that, what we start to see is authors coming in and telling some really great Batman stories. Jeph Loeb and The Long Halloween and Dark Victory, then Hush and Judd Winick and Under the Hood.
And then Grant Morrison steps in and says “So you know all the weird and crazy things from the 50’s & 60’s that went away when Batman became darker? What if we could have both?” and away we go for a ride. There’s A LOT that is in that run and we only scratch the surface but if you want to really dig into the run (and you should) we have the links below.

%CODE_BAT2%
We’re back with Part 2 of our Batman Character Corner. Part 1 focused mostly on the early comics up through the introduction of Tim Drake in Batman #440. For this episode, before diving back into the comics, we wanted to cover the other media that Batman has been prevalent in. Considering that TV has had a big impact on Batman in the comics, we felt throwing this episode in between the two comic focused episodes was best. Both the 66 TV show and the early 90’s Animated Series have led to some characters making their way from the TV screen to the comic book pages. Also Batman’s presence on TV and in film have had an huge impact on his popularity and for many, was their first introduction to not just Batman but comic book characters.
So sit back and listen as we dive into the world of Batman from TV to Film to even Video Games.

This time on the Character Corner we’re finally talking about The Batman. We’ve talked around Batman for a while now. We covered him a bit in our Suicide Squad Character Corner, then the Rogue Wars episode on is villains. We’ve also covered one Robin and all of the Batgirls and even Batwoman. So it’s about time we finally dive into discussing the big guy himself.
We’ll be breaking this out into three parts. For this first part we cover the early years of Batman up to the introduction of Tim Drake as Robin. That’s about forty years of history from 1939 when he first appeared in Detective Comics #27 to the late 80’s and A Lonely Place of Dying. We also spend some time addressing the tragic story of Bill Finger who for the longest time was the uncredited creator of not just Batman but a lot of Batman’s villains as well as the classic conceptions we associate with the character. If you have Hulu, you should definitely check out Batman & Bill that goes into way more detail over how poorly DC treated Bill Finger and how everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

On March 12th, Marvel and Stitcher Premium are releasing a 10-episode scripted series calledTue, 13 Mar 2018 - 235 - Apocalypse vs Mister Sinister: Survival of the Fittest vs Genetic Manipulation
%CODE_APOCALYPSE%
We're back with another Character Corner. This time we're doing double the trouble with two classic X-Men villains: Apocalypse and Mister Sinister. It's actually pretty fitting that we do these two at this point. We recently did an episode on the Summers brothers, Scott & Alex. And we're also planning on doing an episode on Cable and the rest of the Summers bloodline. Throwing Sinister and Apocalypse in between those two seems pretty fitting considering how tied these villains are to the Summers clan. So in this episode we skip over some stuff but only because we'll be diving into more detail when we do that other episode.
The interesting thing about Apocalypse and Mister Sinister is how due to their longevity they've been incorporated into almost everything. Some for the good and some for the bad. But their tale is one that spans generations and overall, is pretty damn good. So sit back and give this episode a listen to find out just out evil these two are.
And for the record, we should make it very clear, neither of these characters are #VillainAgenda. They're just pure evil. It's like Hitler and Josef Mengele.
Oh and Louise Simonson is a national fucking hero. Put some respect on her name.

%CODE_LEXLUTHOR%
We’re back! While our Summers Brothers episodewas technically the first Character Corner of 2018, we recorded it in 2017, so this Lex Luthor episode is the first real episode of 2018. And you all are in for a treat. This episode is slightly different from our other Character Corners. We still go through the history of Lex but we spend more time really discussing and breaking down the core of the character. Unlike other DC characters, the core of Lex Luthor has strangely been consistent throughout his depictions. Sure his early first appearance in Action Comics #23 really set up as the ridiculous comic book villain stereotype, but the interesting thing about Lex is how his depiction mirrors the “stereotyped” bad guy of the era he’s in. He’s been a ridiculous caricature of a bad guy in the 40’s, evil real estate billionaire, overweight and shrewd corporate exec and even a billionaire evil President. Each version might have a reworked background but for a DC character, he’s oddly enough very consistent in how he’s portrayed.
The basis of Lex is always his absurd hatred of Superman followed by his true belief that if not for Superman, he himself would be a good guy/hero. There are some really great non-canon stories that show this (Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and All-Star Superman for example).
This is a great episode that you’re not gonna want to miss as we break down what makes Lex Luthor tick. Oh and Kriss makes it very clear, Lex doesn’t qualify for his “Villain Agenda”. Find out why.
Key Issues (we cover a lot more than what’s listed here):
* Action Comics #43 - First Appearance
* Non-Canon
* Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
* All-Star Superman (Grant Morrison)
* Issue #5 - Clark visits Lex in jail
* The Man of Steel (1986) - John Byrne redesigns the character

* Superman vol 2 #2 - Is told Clark Kent is Superman, doesn’t believe it
* President Luthor
* President Luthor: Secret Files & Origins
* Our Worlds at War
* Superman - Batman (Jeph Loeb)
* Vol 1 - Public Enemies - Whole series is great, first 6 issues deal with the end of President Lex
* Superman: Birthright (Mark Waid)
* Infinite Crisis
* Fifty-Two
* Issues 34 & 35 - Turns off the Everyman powers for citizens and makes it “rain bodies” on New Years
* New Krypton saga

Fri, 02 Feb 2018 - 1h 52min - 233 - Cyclops Was Right? - Essential Comic Books for Scott & Alex Summers
http://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/6121556
We’re starting 2018 off right by going through the essential comic books for Scott Summers and Alex Summers. That’s right it's Cyclops and Havok time. Any chance we can get to talk X-Men, we’re going to leap at it. This was a fun episode to do because Cyclops and Havok have such long and rich histories not only with the X-Men but X-Factor as well.
Scott Summers first appeared in X-Men #1 and Alex debuted in issue #54. Scott starts off as the boy scout and natural leader while Alex is more reluctant to lead and a bit more rebellious. Throughout their history in the comic books though, they gradually switch places as Alex becomes more of a team player & leader and Scott becomes a revolutionary.
Some of Scott’s decisions through the years are tough to defend. After marrying Madelyne Pryor (the clone of Jean Grey), he ends up abandoning her and their child when he finds out Jean Grey is still alive. It’s a real shitty move. Years later, while recovering from Apocalypse messing with his head, he starts cheating on Jean psychically with Emma Frost. Hey, he might be a great team leader but his love life leaves a lot to be desired. But once mutant kind is facing extinction, it’s hard not to see why Scott makes some of the choices he does. You might not be full Team ‘Cyclops Was Right’ but the extreme choices makes are a direct result of having the weight of the entire mutant race on his soldiers.
There are a few things we don’t cover here. First, we don’t cover the young, time displaced Cyclops. He’s basically become his own separate character and we might cover him at a later date. Second, the Summers bloodline is actually pretty complex and A LOT. So we limit this discussion to just Scott and Alex (with a touch of Gabriel). We’re going to cover Nathan (Cable) later on this year closer to Deadpool 2. Although, we do get a bit of him in The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix.
Here are some of the essential comic issues we covered:
Scott Summers:
* Uncanny X-Men 1 - First appearance of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and the X-Men
* Classic X-Men 42 - Mister Sinister in the orphanage
* X-Men Giant Size #1

Sat, 06 Jan 2018 - 2h 14min - 232 - Heir to the Bat: Cassandra Cain & Kate Kane
We're back to wrap up our Batgirls Character Corner with two special characters: Cassandra Cain and Kate Kane. Now, Kate really isn't a Batgirl as she never took up the mantle and her origin as Batwoman is pretty much autonomous from Batman but we're including her in this series anyway. Cassandra is also an interesting case. She's definitely a Batgirl, as she's the first to hold that mantle and get her own solo series, but in many ways she's closer to a Robin and a good case could be made for her being a direct heir to the Bat.
We had a lot of fun discussing these characters and you're not going to want to miss this. This also might be the last Character Corner of 2017 but we'll be back in 2018 with more comic book character goodness.

It's been a while but....WE'RE BACK! Feels like a while since we've done a Character Corner. But we're back now and it's time to enter once again into the Bat-Family, this time with the mantle of Batgirl. To the uninitiated, the Batgirl mantle might just seem like the female-version of the Robin mantle. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
We start this two-part series exploring the most well known Batgirl, Barbara Gordon and her journey from the daughter of a Police Commissioner to Batgirl then to Oracle and back to Batgirl. We then move on to Stephanie Brown who held both the title of Robin (albeit short) and Batgirl as well as coming into her own as Spoiler.

Twitter – @InsanityReport, @Dpalm66 & @TheMTRNetworkSat, 25 Nov 2017 - 230 - Thor Part 2: Thor Returns, The God Butcher, Jane Foster & More
Thor: Ragnarok drops this week and so it's time to wrap up our Thor Character Corner with part 2. First we quickly cover what happened when we last left Thor during part 1. Ragnarok happened and Thor and the rest of Asgard died. And Thor stayed dead for a while. When the road to Civil War started, Thor was still gone but Mjolnir makes an appearance, falling to Earth as the Gods died, tearing a hole that allows Doctor Doom to escape Hell. After a brief attempt by Doom to take the hammer for himself, we then get Tony Stark's bad idea to make a Thor clone that...has disastrous results.
Finally Thor returns. We focus on two writers this episode that really encapsulate Thor's return and that's J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) and current Thor writer Jason Aaron. JMS and Aaron really lean into the idea of Thor and the rest of Asgard being Gods. In a way, Thor is written much like Jesus is from the Bible and there are a lot of great stories. Asgard is reformed above Broxton, Oklahoma and while it seems like this could be a repeat of what happened the last time Thor & Asgard floated above earth, this time is vastly different.
JMS and Jason Aaron really call into question not only what it means to be a God and if mortals still need Gods.
You'll want to listen to our full Character Corner as we follow the journey of Thor (Odinson) to Thor (Jane Foster).

We’re a few weeks out from Thor: Ragnarok being released so I guess it’s time to drop our latest Character Corner: Thor Part 1!
First off, we recorded this over a month ago so please excuse any outdated references. If you’re listening to this I’m assuming Trump hasn’t killed us all so that’s a positive. Anyway, in this first part of a two part series, we cover Thor Volume 1 and Thor Volume 2. Our main focus though is the Walt Simonson run from volume 1 that ran from issues 337 – 382. Simonson both wrote and draw these issues and the entire run is a masterpiece. He introduces Beta Ray Bill, gives us an epic battle with Sutur, Skurge’s Last Stand and even turns Thor into a frog. It’s a wonderful run that is always at the top of any “Best of Thor” list.
We then get into Dan Jurgen’s volume 2 which starts off rough but really picks up with the death of Odin and Thor taking over as the All Father. We find out why Thor’s connection to humanity is needed and the disastrous results if Thor fully embraces being a God without that connection. And then Ragnarok comes.
In both volumes 1 & 2 we see the story of Ragnarok with volume 2 fully seeing Ragnarok coming to fruition. If you want to prepare for Thor: Ragnorak come November 3rd, make sure you listen to this Character Corner, then check out the issues below. Every issue should be on Marvel Unlimited, so get to reading.
Issues:
* Thor: Tales of Asgard (2009) – Remasters old Jack Kirby & Stan Lee stories that flesh out Odin & Asgard
* Journey Into Mystery #83 – First Appearance of Thor
* Avengers #1
* Thor Volume 1
* Walt Simonson’s Run
* #337-340 – The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill
* #340 – 353 – The Sutur Saga
* #362 – Skurge’s Last Stand
* Thor Volume 2
* #36 – 43 - The Death of Odin
* Gods on Earth – # 51- 58, Iron Man #64, Avengers #63

We're wrapping up our Peter Parker Character Corner with the third and final part. We go over (quickly) the introduction of Carnage and then Peter & Harry's final confrontation. Then its on the one of the most controversial storylines: The second clone saga. No matter where you fall in the debate, we can all agree things got a bit out of control. It's not all bad though since Ben Reilly has become a pretty popular character and so despite the mess, there were some good outcomes. We then get into Civil War, One More Day and where Peter is now. Our Rogue Wars character corner covers a lot of the later issues of Peter so you'll definitely want to check that out.

Wed, 30 Aug 2017 - 224 - The Confusing History of Hawkman
We took a little break but we’re finally back with another Character Corner. We still have to finish up our Peter Parker series but we wanted to take a bit of a detour from Marvel and head over to DC and cover one of the most confusing comic book character histories ever: Hawkman.
Now you may be asking yourself “Why Hawkman? Why now?” And that’s a very valid question. Why would we tackle one of the most confusing comic book characters of all time at this point? The answer is simple: Scott Snyder’s Dark Knights: Metal. Snyder wrote an incredible 52 issues of Batman during New 52 and he’s now back with a series that not only answers questions about Batman but also Hawkman, Nth Metal and the rest of the DC Multiverse. While it’s a daunting task to take on Hawkman’s history (one that rarely works out), Snyder definitely has our attention with the first issue of Metal, as well as the preludes Dark Days: The Forge and The Casting.
Key Issues:
Flash Comics #1 - First Appearances of Carter Hall and Shiera Sanders
Brave and the Bold #34 - First Appearances of Katar Hol and Shayera Thal/Hol
Crisis on Infinite Earths
The Shadow War of Hawkman
Hawkworld - Tim Truman's mini-series
Hawkworld - John Ostrander's ongoing series
Zero Hour: Crisis in Time - Merges Carter, Katar and Shiera
JSA Secret Files #1 - First appearance of Kendra Saunders
JSA
The Return of Hawkman (Issues #16 - 25)- Carter Hall returns
Black Reign
Hawkman Volume 4
Issues 1 - 25 Geoff Johns Run
Issues #43- 45 - Charlie Parker reveals that Fel Andar was his father
Issues #47 - 49 - Rann/Thanagar War
Issue #50 becomes Hawkgirl
Hawkgirl
Issue #60 - Kendra/Shiera defeat Hath Set, ending the curseTue, 22 Aug 2017 - 223 - Awesome Con Artist Spotlight: PBS Media and Art Way Alliance
One of my goals at Awesome Con this year was to find and highlight creatives of color who were engaged in inspiring and interesting pursuits. There were so many individuals at the convention this year involved in outreach and development. I was able to sit down with two representatives from a few of these organizations.
PBS Media Creative Director Naseed Gifted talked to me about the organization and their new graphic novel PB Soldier, which Gifted created. The novel is drawn and colored by Abel Garcia.
PB Soldier follows Nat Cummings, a hacker turned government operative who finds himself in the middle of an intrigue he must extract himself from before it is too late. Billed as The Bourne Identity meets V is for Vendetta, Cummings' adventures takes him and the reader all over the world. We also discuss the importance of representation and connecting youth with the material that they are interested in by cultivating their interest in creating art. Find out more about their graphic novel and their outreach efforts by visiting their website at www.pbsmediastudios.com.
Art Way Alliance Communications Director Sierra Dangerfield-Harris sat down with me to discuss the mission of the nonprofit, it's diverse artist staff, and the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) to the K-12 educational system and how their organization seeks to promote this creativity in youth of the D.C. area. If you would like to assist or have their artists visit your venue, information is available at their website at www.artwayalliance.org.
I hope you enjoy the interviews with these engaged and talented individuals.
%CODE_PBS%Wed, 09 Aug 2017 - 47min - 222 - Peter Parker Part 2 - The Hobgoblin Saga, Kraven's Last Hunt & Venom
We’re back for part 2 of our Character Corner series on the history of Peter Parker as Spider-Man. Our first part covered the teenage years of Peter Parker, the death of Gwen Stacy and the original Clone Saga. This second part covers even more as Peter grows up and as Marvel increases the Spider-Man brand. By this time there are now four ongoing Spider-Man titles:
* Amazing Spider-Man
* Marvel Team-Up (1972)
* Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man (1976)
* Web of Spider-Man (1985)
Peter’s Love Life
We tend to oversimplify the love life of Peter Parker into just Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson. But the truth is, Peter not only had a very complex love life, many of the women in his life stick around and have a big impact on his life. When covering his teenage years, you see Peter deal with Liz Allan, Betty Brant, MJ and obviously, Gwen Stacy. Moving forward into his 20’s, these women continue to be involved in various ways. Liz becomes the wife of Harry Osborn. Betty marries Ned Leeds and later has an affair with Flash Thompson becoming tangled up in the saga of the Hobgoblin.
This time also adds in Felicia Hardy, Black Cat. Felicia becomes almost a kindred spirit for Peter at this time when they first fall for each other in their costumes. Spectacular Spider-Man issues 73-79 take place during the war between the Owl and Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man & Black Cat are caught in the middle. It’s during this time that Peter confesses that he’s fallen in love with Felicia. Peter also really pisses of Doctor Octopus after he rips out his mechanical arms. Octavius then vows revenge against Peter and Felicia in a chilling panel.
Peter frequently bounces between Felicia and MJ during this time not knowing who to really settle on. He eventually ends up proposing to MJ (after a previously failed attempt) and they get marred in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. But during this issue you see that Peter still struggles with leaving behind the memory of and moving on from Gwen Stacy.
The Death of Jean DeWolff
The death of Captain Jean DeWolff is covered in Spectacular Spider-Man 107-110 and it is a dark and gritty story. DeWolff is killed by a serial killer named Sin-Eater who also kills a Judge in front of Matt Murdock and murders a preacher. Peter takes the death of Jean DeWolff personally, not only because she always treated him fairly but because he later founds out, she was actually a fan of Spider-Man. It’s then revealed that Sin-Eater is actually another officer in the police department, Stanley Carter. Peter’s anger at Sin-Eater and violence puts him at odds with Daredevil. The end of this arc comes with Spider-Man and Daredevil revealing each other’s alter egos to each other.
The story doesn’t end there. Marvel does a great job with seeding long term Spider-Man stories. The true ending of the death of Jean DeWolff comes 22 issues later in issue #132 when Stanley Carter is released from a mental hospital after treatment. Spider-Man shows up at Carter’s new house to threaten him, only to find that Carter can barely walk. Carter reveals that in their last confrontation, Spider-Man beat him so bad he permanently caused damage. But in a surprise, Carter doesn’t blame Spider-Man and actually thanks him because if not for the beating, Carter might not have been able to shake the Sin-Eater persona. What follows is a dark tale of Spider-Man coming to terms with the fact that he can do serious damage to his enemies when he fights and doubting himself and Carter trying to keep the Sin-Eater persona from coming back.
The Hobgoblin Saga
The Hobgoblin doesn’t get enough credit for being a...Wed, 05 Jul 2017 - 2h 14min - 221 - Teenage Peter Parker – With Great Power There Must Also Come Great Responsibility
http://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/5456721
With Spider-Man: Homecoming right around the corner, we take a look at why Peter Parker, particularly teenage Peter Parker, is such an important character. Appearing in 1962 in Amazing Fantasy 15, Peter Parker broke from tradition by featuring a high school student as the lead superhero. At the time, most teenagers were just sidekicks to the main hero of the story.
“With Great Power There Must Also Come Great Responsibility”
The early runs of Amazing Spider-Man holds up pretty well considering its age. The early issues are basically a gauntlet of what will eventually become one of the greatest rogue galleries in comics (for a full breakdown listen to our Spider-Man Rogues Character Corner). But beyond just the introduction of his villains, these issues also define why having a young Spider-Man is so important. The famous line "With Great Power There Must Also Come Great Responsibility” has been retconned to have been words spoken by Uncle Ben to Peter. however originally, this is just a line written as a narration on the final panel in amazing Fantasy 15. But starting with Amazing Spider-Man #1, we see Peter struggling with balancing the power he has and what his responsibilities are. It’s easy to see why Spider-Man resonated so much with young kids. Peter has the power of a superhero but has to deal with being teased at school, going to school and maintaining his grades, helping to support his aunt who is struggling to pay bills and more every day life issues. On top of that, he’s constantly surrounded by people who only like part of him not the whole. Flash Thompson bullies Peter Parker but idolizes Spider-Man. Betty Brant loves Peter but isn’t too sure of this Spider-Man character. The only person that treats Peter/Spider-Man the same is really J Jonah Jameson and that’s because he treats both equally terrible.
If This Be My Destiny & Spider-Man No More
Issues 31 - 33 kick off an important mini-arc for Peter as well as introduce characters that will have a significant impact on his life. It’s Peter’s first day in college and we’re introduced to characters Gwen Stacy, Harry Osborn and Miles Warren. This arc doesn’t really focus on them and in fact, Peter spends most of these 3 issues rubbing Gwen & Harry the wrong way for ignoring them. But for good reason. Aunt May is sick and might not make it. We find out that after getting a blood transfusion from Peter, she’s been infected by his radioactive blood. This leads to a recurring theme with Peter: The people around him end up harmed or worse either directly or indirectly because of him. Peter as Spider-Man works with Dr Connors to develop a cure but the isotope they need is stolen by Doc Oct. We then get some great panels as an exhausted and nearly defeated Spider-Man powers his way through an army of enemies and almost being trapped and drowned. It’s basically Peter coming to terms with being a hero and digging deep to save the ones he loves. Speaking of who Peter loves. Aunt May finally succeeds in introducing Peter to MJ and it's an introduction that no one forgets in issue #42.
Issue 50 introduces Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin for the first time. But it also has Peter finally having enough and giving up being Spider-Man. He’s tired of not being able to spend time with his friends, the struggle for money to help his aunt and feeling completely unappreciated do to J Jonah’s campaign to turn the city against him. But after saving a security guard who reminded him of his Uncle Ben, Peter realizes that it’s his responsibility to help those in need.
The Death of Gwen Stacy
Make no mistake about it: Gwen Stacy is the love of Peter Parker’s life. Everyone (yes even MJ) is secondary. Some could argue that Gwen Stacy’s death is a case of “fridging a female character”. But unlike most cases where a female character is unceremoniously killed off just for a ...Sat, 17 Jun 2017 - 1h 10min - 220 - Wolverine’s Enemies – Sabretooth, Mystique, The Hand & More
We're back with another Character Corner, this time as a follow up to the Wolverine episode we did here. The first time we covered Logan, we didn't get a chance to go over in detail some of his recurring enemies. To be fair, most enemies of Wolverine end up dead (or resurrected only to be killed by him again). But we decided to do a quick rundown of them anyway. Most of the story details we cover in the first episode and here we just give a bit more background and talk about the problems with some of Logan's deadliest foes.

Kriss and Dpalm are back for the second part of our Heroes for Hire Character Corner. You can find Part 1 here.
In this part, we talk about Danny Rand, Iron Fist, and the badass Samurai, Colleen Wing. With that out of the way, we go through some of the early years with Danny which are pretty well done and build a pretty good story. It also introduces us to Colleen Wing and how much of a badass she is. We end with Fraction/Brubaker's Immortal Iron Fist run & the new The Living Weapon run

%CODE1%
First Character Corner of 2017 is here! Kriss and Dpalm start the year off talking about Piotr Rasputin (Colossus) and Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat). We start with Giant Size X-Men #1 that gives us our first introduction of Colossus along with a bunch of other fan favorites like Storm & Nightcrawler and the second full appearance of Wolverine. We then go through the Claremont years and discuss then the introduction of Kitty Pryde and why the character is so important. The relationship between Peter and Kitty is a bit weird because of their ages but it develops into something less creepy. This Character Corner also was a great excuse for us to re-read Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run which at its core is a Colossus/Shadowcat story. Along the way we geek out over how much we love the X-Men growing up and the potentials for doing Wolverine and Cyclops Character Corners.
We talked for almost 2 hours and still cut out a lot, so give this a listen and let us know what you think

This Character Corner we take a trip to the mystical side of the Marvel Universe and talk about Doctor Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme. With Doctor Strange making his live action debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we thought it wise to give a break down of the character and some essential reading. We start off with his origins and discuss Strange's ethnicity as well as some of the problematic issues at the base of the character. Dpalm talks about some of his issues with early appearances of Doctor Strange and how the more modern takes address some of those issues and make the character more interesting. We also discuss the trade paperback, Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph & Torment and how it's not only great insight into both the characters of Strange and Doom but also a good starting point before getting into Hickman's New Avengers & Secret Wars. %CODE1%
It's time for another Character CornerLuke Cage debuts on Netflix this Friday. Misty Knight will also make her live action debut in that 13 episode series. We decided that this is going to be Part 1 of our Heroes for Hire series as its hard to talk about Luke Cage and Misty Knight without Danny Rand (Iron Fist) and Colleen Wing. So we'll definitely be talking more about Cage & Knight when we do Iron Fist/Colleen Wing next year, but we start you off with the essentials. Luke & Misty are both African-American characters that come from the blaxploitation era of Marvel but have become solid characters that are so much more than that. Luke Cage's origin story still holds up pretty well and is very relevant in today's climate. Misty Knight has never had her own solo book, but she's been central in several series. Give this episode a listen and check out the reading list. Most issues are on Marvel Unlimited.

We're back with another episode of the Character Corner. This time Kriss & Dpalm step out of their comfort zone and deal with a character (or rather a set of characters) that they don't have a lot of prior knowledge on: Ghost Rider. We cover the original Ghost Rider with Johnny Blaze, then move on to his brother Danny Ketch and then finish with the All-New Ghost Rider that will be appearing in this upcoming season of Agents of SHIELD, Robbie Reyes. We were pleasantly surprised by what we found, researched and read with Ghost Rider and we really think people will enjoy this episode.

%CODE1%
We end our 3 part Rogue War Character Corner special with the only group of villains to actually be Rogues (well at least part of them). They might have silly costumes and silly names but when you realize that these villains go up against the Fastest Man Alive and routinely give him hell, you realize just how powerful and dangerous Flash's rogues are. Dpalm and Kriss make the case that not only are the Rogues of Barry Allen and Wally West underrated, but that this is actually the best Rogues Gallery in comic books. Bold statement but we have plenty of evidence to back it up. So give this show a listen.

Twitter – @InsanityReport & @MTrailerReviewsMon, 15 Aug 2016 - 2h 41min - 205 - Rogue War Part 2 - Spider-Man Villains
Part 2 of our Rogue War Character Corner is here. This time we visit the Rogue Gallery of none other than Peter Parker, Spider-Man. Honestly, this is probably the most robust and well known set of villains. An argument can be made for Batman being number 1, but the depth and growth of Spider-Man's villains is really tough to match. It even caught us off guard because we though this might be a shorter show than the Batman villains one and we were very very wrong. But it was great to talk about these characters and we have a ton of issues for you to read. We've linked to some of the bundled issues that you can get through Amazon/Comixology and almost all the issues we listed and mentioned on the show are on Marvel Unlimited.

%CODE1%
So here it is. Part One of our Rogue War Character Corners. First up, we talk about Batman's classic gallery of rogues. And when I say "talk" I really mean that. We put together 2 1/2 hours worth of discussion on the villains that oppose the Bat and even then we had to limit it to the most well known of the villains (Sorry, no Kite Man). We tried to break them out into categories to keep the flow going. Also, unlike previous Character Corners where we have a fairly linear list of comic book runs, I just listed out most of the books we discussed since there's a lot of jumping around. Also the links to the issues go to Amazon where you can buy the Comixology digital copies.

Twitter: @TuskegeeHeirsTue, 28 Jun 2016 - 46min - 202 - Superboy – The Metropolis Kid/Kon-El/Connor Kent
%CODE1%
When Dpalm suggested we do Superboy for our next Character Corner, I was skeptical that we would be able to cover a whole show. Boy was I wrong. We ended up doing 90 minutes on Connor Kent and that's after condensing and skipping over a lot of things. This is only the beginning though since we clearly have to do a Teen Titans Character Corner now. Superboy is a really interesting DC character since its really easy to follow a linear progression for this character from his first appearance up to the New 52 (but as Dpalm says...don't read any New 52 Superboy...its bad). Twitter – @InsanityReport & @MTrailerReviewsThu, 16 Jun 2016 - 1h 28min - 201 - Magneto The Master of Magnetism
%CODE1%
We cover another X-Man villain turned...good? This time we cover Magneto, the greatest enemy of the X-Men. Magneto has a very interesting arc as a villain. He starts off as the perfect antithesis to Professor Xavier. He starts with the simple idea of "never again" will he allow his people to be slaughtered to believing he's the messiah for mutant kind to dealing with the guilt when he fails. Kriss once again finds himself defending some of the more awful crimes Magneto commits but maybe once you finish listening you'll be agreeing that Magneto was right too.
There's a LOT of issues involving Magneto. Below I just list some of the ones we talked about but there's plenty more. Marvel Unlimited is your friend. A great place to start is Cullen Bunn's 2014 Magneto solo series as it ends up covering a lot of Magneto's history as well.

Twitter – @InsanityReport& @MTrailerReviewsWed, 01 Jun 2016 - 200 - Essential Comics for Marvel’s Black Panther
%CODECCBP%
If you're looking for the essential marvel comics to read for Black Panther then look no further. With his first solo movie just over a month away, its time to revisit our Character Corner episode that goes through the history of the first black super hero in mainstream comics. T'Challa made his live action debut in Captain America: Civil War but the importance and interest in the character goes back much further.
In this episode, we break down what exactly Wakanda is and how progressive the writing for both Wakanda & T'Challa was even back in the 60's. Black Panther was given the spotlight in the Jungle Action series where he even took on and fought the KKK. The last 90's saw a new revival for T'Challa when Christopher Priest took over for Black Panther Volume 3. Looking back, this run is very problematic (it's a bit hotepy and the depiction of women/little girls is bad), but it represented a huge shift in how Black Panther & Wakanda were represented. This is the run that hooked a lot of people on the character of T'Challa and the concept of Wakanda. For all it's issues, Priest did a great job of elevating T'Challa to basically being Marvel's Batman while expanding on what Wakanda really was. As problematic as the depiction is, credit also has to be given to Priest for introducing the concept of the Dora Milaje.
Priest's run redefined Black Panther and subsequent writers just built on that. Reginald Hudlin's run on Black Panther has moments that fall flat but also provide some significant changes to the character. For good or bad, Hudlin retcons the history of T'Challa and the X-Men Storm so that Ororo is the "one true love" of T'Challa. Personally the Storm/T'Challa marriage was poorly thought out, unnecessary and executed. But Hudlin also introduces us to Shuri, T'Challa's sister and eventual successor as ruler of Wakanda.
Our episode goes into further details with each of these series and more. We go into T'Challa's relationship with the other rulers in the Marvel Universe: Namor, Black Bolt and Doctor Doom. The rivalry between Doctor Doom & T'Challa takes the character to the next level.
Like I said, we cover a lot. So give it a listen.

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 - 199 - Daredevil/Elektra/Punisher – The Depressing Life of Matt Murdock
%CODE1%
This is a massive Character Corner episode. We cover 3 characters: Daredevil, Elektra and Punisher. This was a really great episode that allows us to dig into the depressing life of Matt Murdock. What makes Daredevil such a great character is how much Matt Murdock matters to understanding the character. We cover the major moments in Matt's life and how it all continues to spiral downhill. From crazy ninja ex-girlfriends, to dead girlfriends to murderous villains like Bullseye and Kingpin. We then talk a little bit about Elektra and then dig into the craziness that is Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. We end with a discussion on how Punisher and Daredevil really work well as competing narratives of the same end goal. You're not going to want to miss this.
There are some spoilers here for Daredevil Season 2 on Netflix

Twitter – @InsanityReport& @MTrailerReviewsSun, 27 Mar 2016 - 1h 57min - 198 - Wonder Woman – Truth in the Trinity
%CODE1%
This time Kriss & Dpalm cover Wonder Woman before her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This is the oldest character we've done (She's been around since 1942) and we talk about how this has lead to some problematic ways she's been depicted. While now seen as a feminist icon, the character's beginnings are full of problematic depictions and just flat out bad writing. But we've found some really good reads that do her justice and really highlight her being "Truth" in the Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) of DC Comics. This was a great discussion and I think we pulled out some great comics that really highlight what makes her so great.
Issues:
* Gods & Mortals
* Spirit of Truth
* JLA - A League of One
* Wonder Woman - The Hiketeia
* Batman-Superman-Wonder Woman: Trinity
* WW Volume 2
* Issues 195-200
* Issues 206-2013
* WW Volume 3
* Issues 14-17 - Gail Simone run
* Flashpoint Paradox

* Flashpoint - Wonder Woman & The Furies

* Issue #3 - Hippolyta reveals Diana is a child of Zues

Twitter – @InsanityReport& @MTrailerReviewsSat, 19 Mar 2016 - 1h 10min - 197 - Doctor Doom Part 3 God Doom
Dpalm and Kriss present the final part of their Character Corner series on Doctor Doom. During this final part we focus mainly on Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four run that leads into New Avengers/Secret Wars. The heart of this story is a Reed Richards vs Doctor Doom story but there's so much more. We see Doom become a God, twice. We also see more of the relationship between Valeria & Victor. Doom kinda sorta tries to redeem and do good but ultimately is still a dick. We also finish up by talking about the new direction we see for Victor Von Doom in the new Invincible Iron Man run. This is one of our favorite Character Corners and you're going to want to listen.
Issues:
* Doomwar #3 - Doom confronts the Panther God and is judged as having "pure" intentions
* The Entire Jonathan Hickman run of Fantastic Four (Volume 3 #570-611) & FF(Volume 1 #1-13)
* FF #2 - Doom mocks Ben for watching Johnny die
* FF #12 & 16 - All Hope Lies with Doom
* Fantastic Four #611 - Reed, Valeria, Nathaniel go to save Doom from Doomworld
* Fantastic Four Annual 2014 - Sue goes to Latveria to get Valeria
* Loki: Agent of Asgard #6 & 7 - Doom and Valeria take on Lokia
* Jonathan Hickman's New Avengers & Secret wars
* New Avengers #6 - an Incursion happens in Latveria
* New Avengers #24 - Namor comes to Doom & Doom rejects him. It's revealed...Doom has a plan
* New Avengers #33 - Doom confronts the Beyonders
* Secret Wars #8 - Doom vs Thanos
* Secret Wars #9 - Doom vs Reed
* Invincible Iron Man #1-5 - The new Victor Von Doom...is he a good guy?
* For New Avengers, check out the complete reading list on our Comic Book Book Club

Twitter – @InsanityReport& @MTrailerReviewsSun, 06 Mar 2016 - 1h 20min - 196 - Doctor Victor Von Doom Part 2
Dpalm and Kriss present part 2 of their character corner on Doctor Victor Von Doom. If you thought Doom was evil in part 1, he gets even worse. Doctor Doom decides that he needs to get back to his roots and decides to concentrate more on his magic and becomes even more terrifying. He takes trolling the Fantastic Four to a new level by helping Sue give birth to Valeria and it begins a very interesting relationship between Doom and his goddaughter. Doom also survives Hell and then gets revenge after millions of years, cementing that Doom is not to be fucked with. Oh and we throw in Doctor Doom vs T'Challa & Wakanda for good measure.
Issues:
* Marvel Graphic Novel - Emperor Doom #27- Doom uses the Purple Man to take over the World
* Fantastic Four Vol3 #54 - Doom helps deliver Valeria, and saves Sue's life in the process
* Fantastic Four Vol 3 #67-70 - Unthinkable.
* Fantastic Four Vol 3 #556-565
* Fantastic Four Vol 3 #566-569 - The Masters of Doom

%CODE1%
On this Character Corner Dpalm and Kriss cover the Merc with the Mouth, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. Deadpool is a unique character in that you can pretty much read anything with Deadpool in it. We have a ton of suggested reading for the character include a surprising "cameo" in a DC Comics book.
Issues: *All of these issues are on Marvel Unlimited except Superman/Batman Annual #1 obviously*
* New Mutants #98 - #100- First Appearance of Deadpool
* Deadpool (1997-2002) #1-#33- Joe Kelly run. First appearance of Blind Alfred
* Deadpool and Death Annual - Flashbacks to Wade's time in Weapon X & feud with Ajax/Francis. Also his love with Death
* Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars - the retelling of the 1984 Secret Wars with Deadpool as the hero
* Deadpool: Suicide Kings
* Cable & Deadpool
* Uncanny X-Force Volume 1
* A+X #8 - Hawkeye & Deadpool team up
* Agent X #1-7 & #13-15 - Gail Simone's first mainstream comic
* Superman/Batman Annual #1 - Yes...this is not a mistake. This is DC embracing the fact that Deadpool is a parody of Deathstroke. See an "alternate" Deathstroke who looks (and behaves) an awful lot like Deadpool

Dpalm and Kriss finally get around to their character corner on Doctor Victor Von Doom. We're going to have to break this up into two parts (maybe even three). For this first part we give a primer on Victor Von Doom's background. We cover the origin of his feud with Reed Richards. We also talk about about what makes Doom so terrifying (and a dick), his over confidence and his never ending quest for power. So check out Part 1 of this Character Corner. It only gets worse from here with Doom.
Issues:

Twitter – @InsanityReport& @MTrailerReviewsTue, 02 Feb 2016 - 56min - 193 - Transformers More Than Meets the Eye – James Roberts InterviewPhoto by Alex Valente
Join Kriss and Dpalm as they ring in the new year with Movie Trailer Reviews's first interview of 2016. The MTR crew sat down with the writer of IDW's Transformers More Than Meets The Eye, James Roberts. Roberts was recently named Comic Alliance's Outstanding Writer of 2015. We talk about the transition from fan to writer, the unique perspective of writing a licensed comic, and welcoming new readers to a 30 year old franchise. Of course, we talk about the book itself as the series nears its landmark 50th issue.
Here is a sample of what we talked about:
On why More Than Meets The Eye can be a good book for new readers:
There was a decision to, I guess you can call it a soft reboot, sort of definitively move the IDW books into a second phase and the foundation for that was going to be the end of the war. That’s as good of a fresh start as you can have without starting from the very beginning and doing a proper reboot. So with John Barber with Robots in Disguise and myself with More Than Meets the Eye, two new books, two new on-goings, [there’s] a very simple pitch to the uninitiated which is: You know about the Autobot and Decepticons. Beyond that you know that they’ve been age old enemies. Well that stopped, there’s an uneasy peace…start reading now and let’s see where it goes. And that’s compounded by the fact that MTMTE is a good ole quest book. Its age old trope stuff. A group of mismatched people, you don’t need to know who they are, they’re on a ship and they’re flying into adventures. So that’s your background. MTMTE is a bit of sealed discrete book because of the quest format (with the exception being when we have crossovers) but its quite insular in the sense that you’re focusing on a finite group of characters and they’re moving further way from Cybertron into uncharted space and it doesn’t lend itself to jumping into other books. So you can start with just MTMTE and it wouldn’t be very often that you’d feel wrong footed by a piece of information or a character that you’d expected to know. Its pretty much its own thing going forward.
On how many of the story seeds are planned in advance:
Its mainly planned. Not exclusively sometimes opportunities come up. The Chaos Theory stuff on a textural/thematically level was designed to take Megatron forward as a character in particular. Some of the Chaos Theory stuff we literally reintegrated into Elegant Chaos using the same pages. When I did Chaos Theory I didn’t have that in mind. When I wrote Shadow Play, which is the second of the three pre-war stories, I did think ‘okay we are going to revisit these pages in a couple years time’. That was with a greater amount of foreknowledge. You know there’s a degree of naivety here certainly in the early days, because as I said at the beginning we thought 12-16 issues would be fine and yet I was still thinking “well you know if we stick around…”
Is Issue 113 the end or are there other stories to tell:
You’re not the first to suggest 113 would be an appropriate end point. But I said with issue 1 that a fitting end would be issue 100. Do I have Transformers stories to tell after that? I don’t know We’ll see. I might have said everything I’ve needed to by then. We’ll find out. If we get to, so hey…keep buying it.
Is there another franchise or passion he’d like to take on:
I love Spider-Man that would be great. I’m a big fan of Death’s Head, another Marvel/UK character from the 80’s. Kieron [Gillen] is a similar age as me. We both grew up on Transformers UK. We’re both fanboys. And we both put soundtracks to our comics as well. Dr. Who is the other huge one.Tue, 19 Jan 2016 - 192 - Rip Hunter Time Master & Vandal Savage
%CODE1%
We do a dual episode this time to cover Rip Hunter and Vandal Savage as a primer for CW's upcoming Legends of Tomorrow. We talk about how there's some really good stories with Rip Hunter although DC hasn't really used him much lately. Vandal Savage is another story. He seems to be very underused in the comics but has been used fairly well in other media like the animated shows/movies and has a lot of potential in Legends of Tomorrow up against Rip Hunter.
Rip Hunter:
* Showcase #20- First Appearance
* 52
* Booster Gold Volume 2
* Time Masters: Vanishing Point - Dark Phoenix Saga
Vandal Savage
* JSA #43 & #45

We talk about our first X-Men/Mutant with this discussion on Emma Frost. We cover her entire history from her being introduced as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club to her transition to becoming an X-Men and protector of the mutant race. We talk about the recurring tragedies that help mold Emma from being just an evil villain to the hero she is now. Black Adam is such an interesting character because while a lot of what he does is wrong, the motives are something you can understand. Complexity like this makes a villain good. Twitter – @InsanityReport & @MTrailerReviewsThu, 18 Jun 2015 - 181 - Invincible Volumes 6 to 10 - Comic Book Book Club
We're back with the next 5 volumes of Invincible and cover volumes 6 through 10. Invincible is an interesting series because it's able to navigate accelerated storytelling with seeding things that don't pay off until volumes later. It's a good combination that both continually rewards the reader while also giving them something to look forward to.
In these 5 volumes, Mark is really coming into his own as a hero. It's like a combination of Spider-Man and Superboy with all the real-world problems that come with that. Trying to manage his grades in college and his love life while also being a hero, clearly is taking a toll. It doesn't help that Nolan pops back up and we see what he's been up to. Gotta say, when it comes to trash fathers, Nolan isn't at the top of the list yet but he's rapidly climbing.
There's a lot to cover so give this episode a listen. We'll be back soon with volumes 11 - 15. Also later in March we'll be discussing the first 3 episodes of the animated series coming to Amazon Video. So stay tuned.
Issues:
* Volume 6: A Different World
* Volume 7: Three's Company
* Volume 8: My Favorite Martian
* Volume 9: Out of this World
* Volume 10: Who's the Boss?

Sun, 07 Mar 2021 - 46min - 180 - Barry Allen and the Flash Family Part 1
This feels like a long time coming. It's actually quite amazing that it's taken us this long to cover Barry Allen. We're slowly making our way through the original seven members of the Justice League (Martian Manhunter is the only remaining member left and we'll cover him soon). There's a few reasons why it's taken us such a long time to cover the character that practically launched the Silver Age of comics.
First, we're Wally West fans. There's a reason why Wally West was the second character we ever covered on the Character Corner. And rightly so. Most of what everyone knows of the Flash came from Wally's time (The Speed Force was created during Mark Waid's great Wally West run). Related to this, the second reason it has taken us this long is because Barry Allen for so long represented more of a Legend in the DC Universe than anything else. His first appearance kicked off the start of the Silver Age and his death not only saved the DC Universe but also arguably kicked off the Bronze Age. His sacrifice set the bar and tone for so many characters, not just Wally. He also for the longest time the promise of a hero passing his mantle and legacy to his protege. And honestly, the best Barry Allen stories and the ones people really think of that define the character, all came after his return from death after two decades.
But before we get into Barry, we start with Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash. We'll also be covering some of the other members of the Flash family in part 2. Consider these episodes the primer for later this year when we do a deep dive Comic Book Book Club into Josh Williamson's run on the Flash that really brings home and ties together the legacy of Barry Allen.
Issues:
* Jay Garrick
* Flash Comics #1 - First Appearance of Jay Garrick The Golden Age Flash
* All Star Comics #3 - First Appearance of the Justice Society of America (Jay was founding member and Chairman)
* Barry Allen
* Showcase #4 - First appearance of Barry Allen the Silver Age Flash
* Flash #110 - First Appearance of Wally West as Kid Flash
* Flash #123 - Flash of Two Worlds (Barry & Jay meet for the first time)
* The Original Rogues (We covered Flash Rogues on this episode)
* Captain Cold - Showcase #8
* Mirror Master (Sam Scudder)- The Flash #105
* Gorilla Grodd - The Flash #106
* Pied Piper (Hartley Rathaway) - The Flash #106
* Weather Wizard (Mark Mardon) - The Flash #110
* Trickster James Jesse - The Flash #113
* Captain Boomerang - The Flash #117
* The Top (Roscoe Dillon) - The Flash #122
* Abra Kadabra - The Flash #128
* Heat Wave - The Flash #140
* The Golden Glider (Lisa Snart) - The Flash #250
* Rainbow Raider - The Flash #286
* The Flash #139 - First appearance of Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash/Professor Zoom
* The Flash #275 - The death of Iris Allen
* The Flash #282 - 283 - Thawne revealed as Iris' murderer
* The Flash #324 - Barry kills Thawne when Thawne tries to kill his new fiance
* The Flash #340 - 350 - Trial of the Flash. #350 ends with Iris being revealed to be from the 30th century and still alive, Barry goes off with Iris to live in the 30th century
* Crisis on Infinite Earths
* The Wally West Years (Check our Wally West Character Corner & the Update)
* Final Crisis #2 - The real return of Barry Allen
* The Flash The Rebirth - Six Issue mini-series.Thu, 18 Feb 2021 - 1h 20min - 179 - Invincible Volume 1 to 5 - Comic Book Book Club
Is World Domination a father-son bonding activity? Kriss and Dpalm dive into Robert Kirkman's Invincible with the first five volumes. The first 5 volumes of this series are a great introduction to the world that Kirkman has set up. It's also a great example of how those that say they want a "dark", R-rated Justice League (looking at those lost SnyderCut stans), just need to pick up some creator owned books. Invincible starts off as basically "What if we took Superman, gave him a son and then made him an evil tyrant that needed to be stopped by his son?" Seriously, Nolan/Omni-Man beating the shit out of his son Mark/Invincible is something no one is really expecting to see.
But don't think that Invincible is just some DC rip-off. Far from it. Yes they take their shots and have their parodies, but really Invincible does a great job of building its characters and the world they live in into something that stands on its own. By the time you finish volume 5, you're fully invested. There's the trauma of Mark and his mother Deborah trying to piece their lives together after Nolan is revealed to be an evil tyrant and exposed to the whole world. The supporting cast like Allen the Alien, Atom Eve (who when you realize what her powers are you'll be questioning yourself), the Mauler Twins, Monster Girl and others are all intriguing and interesting on their own. Then there's the feeling that you clearly don't know all that is going on besides the fact that Kirkman has a plan and is willing to take his time to build out that world. All of this makes for a great and exciting read.
We'll be back at the end of the month to do the next 5 volumes. Make sure you stay tuned and pick up your own copies so you can read along with us.
Issues:
* Volume 1 Family Matters
* Volume 2 Eight is Enough
* Volume 3 Perfect Strangers
* Volume 4 Head of the Class
* Volume 5 Facts of Life

Tue, 02 Feb 2021 - 45min - 178 - Scarlet Witch and Vision - Marvel's Odd Couple
First Character Corner of 2021 and we timed it to come out the same weekend that Marvel premieres its first Disney+ TV series: WandaVision. So, of course we had to tackle the Wanda Maximoff, The Scarlet Witch and her husband (ex-husband technically) Vision. These two characters actually have a pretty robust history and in the case of Wanda, have some pretty serious consequences in the Marvel Universe. The fallout from House of M significantly changed the status of mutants and led to some major moments. Hope wasn't wrong when she said she blamed Wanda for everything. Both Wanda and Vision have some deep cut connections to the Golden Age. And for those that have seen the first two episodes of WandaVision, getting some of the background gone on these characters will probably make you look at those first two episodes less as a sitcom and more as the setup for a horror story.
Issues:
* Uncanny X-Men #4 - First appearance of Scarlet Witch and her twin brother, Pietro/Quicksilver
* Avengers #16 - Cap's Kooky Quartet. Wanda & Pietro join the Avengers
* Avengers #57 - First appearance of Vision
* Avengers #108 & 198
* Avengers #128 - Agatha Harkness becomes to the magical mentor of Wanda
* Avengers #133 - 135 - Full origin of Vision revealing his connection to the android Human Torch
* Giant Size Avengers #4 - Marriage of Vision and Scarlet Witch
* Vision and the Scarlet Witch (1982)
* Issue 4 - Magneto revealed to be the father of Wanda and Pietro
* Avengers #242 - 243 - Vision becomes leader of the Avengers
* Avengers #251 - 254 - Vision tries to take over the world's computers. Is stopped and then monitored by world governments
* Vision and the Scarlet Witch (1985)
* These 12 issues lead to the birth of Wanda & Vision's twins: Tommy & Billy
* West Coast Avengers #42 - 5 - Vision Quest. Vision is dismantled and put back together without human emotion
* West Coast Avengers #51 - 52 - The truth about Wanda & Vision's twins is revealed
* Avengers Vol 3 #10 - Wanda brings Wonder Man back from the dead
* Avengers vol 3 #500 - 503 - Disassembled. Wanda remembers the truth about her twins and things go very very badly
* House of M
* Wanda makes her way to #2 on the All Time Mutant decimation list with three simple words: No More Mutants
* Children's Crusade
* Wiccan and Speed search for Wanda who they believe they are the reincarnated souls of her twins
* Avengers vs X-Men
* Uncanny Avengers - The "Unity" squad.
* Vision (Tom King)

Our shirts are now on TeePublic:Sun, 17 Jan 2021 - 1h 16min - 177 - The Hickmanverse - Pull List # 7
We're cutting it close but we're squeezing in a final Character Corner/Pull List episode of 2020. This has been a long, stressful year that's disrupted our normal schedule but we didn't want to close out the year without one more episode. Plus, despite everything going on, it's actually been a really great year for comics. There's good stuff all around. Kriss has finally jumped into the Power Rangers books that Dpalm recommended and he really has been enjoying reading them. On the DC side, Scott Snyder's Dark Knights: Death Metal is coming close to an end and it's really good. As we've mentioned before, Death Metal has been a really good commentary on DC in trying to clean up the mess of their multiverse and their history of erasing their history. Hopefully they'll keep it up after this is all over. Oh and Tom King is back to wrap up his Batman/Catwoman story.
On the Marvel side, there's plenty to go around. There's the Star Wars books, particularly Darth Vader and when you couple those with the announcements from LucasFilms and it's all very exciting. Captain America is great, Miles Morales' Ultimatum story has wrapped up and there's plenty more. But the real thing to talk about is what Hickman is doing with the X-Men. Dawn of X has wrapped up with the X of Swords and Hickman once again proves he's playing the long game. As the man who wiped out the Captain Britain Corps, we didn't expect him to be the one to bring it back and then to do it through a X-Men story but that's exactly what he did. We're excited to see what he's going to continue to do with these X-Books and what's coming with Reign of X.
Oh and for 2021, we're getting back to the basics. We'll be kicking off 2021 with a Scarlet Witch and Vision Character Corner to coincide with WandaVision. And we're going to also then do a Comic Book Book Club on Invincible. So stay tuned.

Follow us on Twitter:Thu, 31 Dec 2020 - 1h 06min - 176 - Miles Morales Brooklyn's Spider-Man
With the release of the Miles Morales: Spider-Man game for Playstation 4 & 5, it's the perfect time to do a follow-up on Miles Morales. Back in 2015 we did a Character Corner on Miles (Listen here). Since then a lot has happened. Matter of fact, around the time of that episode, Miles was making the huge transition from the 1610 Ultimate Universe to the main 616 universe through Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars. The result of Secret Wars saw big changes for Miles as not only did he make it over to 616 but so did his family and friends. And with that Marvel now has two Spider-Men to play with: The elder Peter Parker who deals with the challenges of being Spider-Man as an adult and the teenage Miles Morales that still gives readers that classic "teenage Spider-Man angst".
The other big thing that's changed with Miles is that his creator Brian Michael Bendis finally passed the character along to another writer. Saladin Ahmed picked up the writing duties of Brooklyn's Spider-Man and not only has it been great, but the arc has tied directly back to Secret Wars and the fact that Miles & his family/friends are not from 616. It's been a great run so far and we can't wait to see how it all plays out.
Listen as we give the update on Miles and talk about how he's gone from new character 9 years ago to an unstoppable force that can't be too far from a live action debut.

Fri, 20 Nov 2020 - 1h 01min - 175 - It All Matters - Pull List #6
It’s that time again…time for another episode of the Pull List one the Character Corner podcast. Kriss caught up on what Scott Snyder did on Justice League and is doing with his anti-Crisis Crisis, Dark Knight Death Metal and we have thoughts.
Outside of the DC & Marvel super heroes, Power Rangers remains great and if you haven’t been reading the Star Wars books you’re really missing out. Seriously, you can’t call yourself a Star Wars fan and not be reading what’s happening in those books. The third Darth Vader series from Marvel continues the trend of great Vader books. This current one is set right after Empire Strikes Back and well, Emperor Palpatine is an asshole.
Over at Marvel, it’s X-Men everything. The X of Swords event is heating up but . If you’re an X-Men fan you should be scared of what Hickman has up his sleeves. We’re slowly catching up on everything but one thing is clear: The X-Men are back. Every X-book is great and a must read. We're nervous because things are going well for the X-Men and X-Men stories always in with tragedy so we're now worried what's coming next (Nimrod is inevitable and yet we haven't seen any mention in a while).
And then there’s DC. Look, we’re hard on DC because well…we’ve been hurt before (see our live action movie rants). However, we’ve been overall pleasantly surprised by what they’ve done with Rebirth. What Scott Snyder has done the last year or so with Justice League and now Death Metal feels like finally someone is talking back to the leadership at DC and saying “all our history should matter and we should embrace it”. The conclusion of Death Metal and the fall out with Future State is very exciting. The problem is, there are still hints that the problems at the core of DC are still there. Like why when Snyder rolled off of Justice League to do an event that is literally destroying the DC multiverse….the Justice League book continued on with a new creative team like nothing was happening. At least now we're taking two steps forward and only one step back. That's still making progress.
